You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Talking animals in commercials: yes or no?
Oh, hell no. They freak me out! Please back to the days when — gosh, what was that movie called? The Incredible Journey? There was also Homeward Bound, the one where the animals have to cross the wilderness, and they talk along the way, but their lips don’t actually move.Maybe I’m just a throwback to the days of yore, but for me, that’s how I picture animals communicating.
- Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go?
Band-Aids, yo! Or, if you’re feeling really super fancy, Moleskin, which you can get at Walgreens. Either way, they serve the same function.Basically, if you have a sore spot on your feet — and with me being a shoe person, this happens often, especially with a new pair of shoes — you just stick the Band-Aid on your heel or wherever that spot is to protect it from rubbing and chaffing against the shoe.
Oh! — and Tide pens. Those are great because you never know when pizza or spaghetti sauce will go a little cray-cray. Very handy when you’re wearing white.
Also, that double-sided fashion tape to keep your bra straps stuck to your clothes and hidden from view, and mini-lint/pet hair rollers, and good old-fashioned safety pins (the tiny ones are great for wardrobe malfunctions), and a little case of Advil/ibuprofen, because it sucks to have a headache ruin an evening.
- If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do?
I would rip out all of the carpet and put in hardwood floors. I would fix the stairs, because Tabs treats them like his own personal cat tower, so the carpet covering the stairs has been torn to shreds.I’d redo the windows to make them more energy efficient. I would paint each and every room in the house a different color, and I would completely revamp my kitchen and get new countertops, new cupboards and a new, larger sink, because my tiny sink drives me bonkers.
And that’s just for starters.
- What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately?
These Kate Spade gumdrop small square studs.I love those things! They go with everything, and I also have a necklace from a designer, whose name I can’t remember now. It’s a delicate gold necklace with a letter “K” pendant.
- What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)?
Hair. Definitely. I love to change the color of my hair, and I’m currently going through a dark hair phase.I love hair because you can see it every day, and it’s easy to change.
(Well…I’m not changing it. My friend Alis is changing it.)
You can make a super dramatic change in your look by changing your hair color, and it can completely change what colors you wear on your face and how you dress. I feel like a different person when I change my hair color.
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

First of all, happy President’s Day! Second, I think I figured out the key to Valentine’s gift-giving, and I think it might be power tools.
Apparently nothing says “I love you” like power tools. 🙂
I gave El Hub this thing called a jig saw, and his eyes lit up! Power tools: who knew?
I hope you had a nice weekend. What did you do? Did you do anything fun, and did it involve cats?
What’s the plan for this week?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Ruchita says
1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no?
No way. But talking babies are worse.
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go?
Some type of Chapstick, blotting paper, tweezers and a small mirror, bobby pins
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do?
Our house is only a year old, so luckily all the paint, etc is up to date. I would love to get some new furniture in the living room and bedroom. We have high ceilings in the living room, so I wish there was a cool way to catify it with a catwalk or stairs along the walls. Might not be good for resale value, but it would be fun. 🙂
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately?
Pashmina. It’s been so cold, I find myself wearing it all the time, even inside.
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)?
Usually with nail polish. And even though I wear a lot of black, I do enjoy bright prints and colors in clothing.
Happy Monday!

1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no?
Depends… I’ll have to get back to you on a good example.
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go?
Oh, blotting papers.
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do?
I’m not sure. I’m in a rental right now so there isn’t much I can do! I’d certainly get new furnishings and some new rugs/curtains and additional art. I’ve lost a lot of stuff from moving damage.
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately?
HMMMM, does a handbag count? If so my new Sole Society bag.
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)?
Nails and clothes!
Tatiana says
1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no?
No way. But I agree with Ruchita, talking babies are worse.
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go? Lip balm or moisturizing lipstick and blister pads for my feet.
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do?
New floors downstairs. Tear out carpet and put in hardwood on stairs and bedrooms upstairs. I would totally redo my kitchen, too.
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately? The new sparkly but really cheap earrings the DH gave me for VDay.
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)? Lipstick all the way. I used to wear MLBB colors, muted roses and an occasional red. Lately, I’ve been trying bright pinks and plums, like MAC Rebel, Hourglass Fever or Chanel La Romanesque.
Ana Mattoso says
I can totally relate to this, I recently changed my hair from platinum blonde (i’ve had it for 4 years) to chocolate brown!
On the first couple days I was a bit shocked hahah I even had a tiny meltdown, but now I love it! It changes everythng, the colors of my makeup, clothes, i’ts fun 🙂 My plan is to go back to natural for now (dark blonde).

Katherine M says
1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no?
~They kinda creep me out too…and I loved Homeward Bound! One of my all time faves as a kid.
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go?
~I’m with you on Band-Aids (you can get the Band-Aid blister ones, and the Band-Aid blister protection for cute shoes).
~While we’re on the Band-Aids vein, Dr. Scholls for high heels (if you didn’t already put them in) aren’t a bad idea, either.
~I always keep lip gloss and hand lotion in my purse.
~A hair brush (small boar bristle by Conair) and headbands, hair ties, and clips are a must, especially if you need your hair to stay nice all day. Having that stuff helps in a pinch when your hair isn’t cooperating and you need to do a quick braid or bun.
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do?
~We left our walls white, so I would probably do some different colors and go with a neutral but inviting theme. I would also put a jacuzzi tub in in the master bath. Since our townhouse is 5 years old, there isn’t too much else I’d do to it. If there was a way to add a third garage or more storage space, I’d be in.
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately?
~I just got a new Michael Kors purse on a super sale at TJ Maxx and it’s something that I would use year round. I don’t buy purses or go shopping much, so it was a treat for myself that didn’t break the bank or what I like to spend (I’m a cheapskate when it comes to anything designer and won’t spend over $100 for nice stuff…). TJ Maxx is awesome for when you want a designer bag but don’t want to spend retail or even sale price.
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)?
~I absolutely love playing with eyeshadow. I can show off so many different sides of myself with colorful shadow. I love how neutral makeup can look professional but also sexy, and I love how smoked out colorful shadow can really play up a neutral clothing look.
I also really love playing with hair color. I do it mostly myself and I’ve been obsessed with playing up my natural color (which is a deep brown with natural red in it, though I’ve found some greys lately – at only 27! – and hence why I dye it). I love doing red highlights with a mahogany base. It’s been my signature for a while. I’ve also done jet black, blue black, and the same shade of red that Simone Simons from the band Epica has in her hair (if you ever want to go red, look at pics of her – her hair is amazing).
Happy President’s Day! Hope all is well with you. We are going to get a big snowstorm here in MD.
Tracy says
1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no? Sometimes
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go?
Travel friendly flats because I think it’s always a good idea to break in a new pair of heels, NOT! Plus Hubs is getting tired of the piggyback rides through the streets of Boston.
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do?
We sold our home about 5yrs ago and never looked back. We were done with repairs and the upkeep but we just got done furnishing our condo so we’re done for a while.
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately?
Screw head earrings
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)? Lipstick
Rachel R. says
1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no? No, it’s usually stupid.
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go? Tide pen, for sure! I always seem to manage to drip something on my shirtfront. I also agree with you about bandaids and safety pins. Hair elastics for windy days or when your style just ups and dies. Also good for holding together compacts with broken hinges. Tiny screwdriver and screws for eyeglasses/sunnies.
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do? Replace the crappy carpeting that came with the place, replace the crappy linoleum in the kitchen/dining area, and reface the cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms. On a larger scales, there is some remodeling I’d do in terms knocking down a wall, and merging to bedrooms into a larger master bed and bath. I’d enlarge the main bath.
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately? Sterling silver “X” ring on my right pointer finger. I’m into midi-rings, too.
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)? Everything! lol Eyeshadow and liner, if I have to choose.
Ashleigh says
1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no? Yes! Except the geicko gecko no longer entertains me…
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go? Nail file, hair ties, and a hearty stash of lip products!
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do? Add more windows (we have none on the western side so only morning light for us) and space for a beauty room… oh and while we’re dreaming several acres of land for a hobby farm 😉
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately? I got some of The little market bracelets from my stylish aunt for Christmas, and they’re perfect with any outfit. I layer them together or wear one at a time.
http://www.thelittlemarket.com/product-category/bracelets/
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)? Nail polish I’ve never been afraid to experiment with color, it took me years to even own a pink polish. But when it comes to eyeshadow, lately I’ve been into colored liner, particularily putting teal eyeshadow over black liner. I already have bright red hair, so whatever makeup I wear has to compete with that. I try to keep the bright color on one feature, I think it can have a positive impact that way. But I love brightly colored makeup in general and love it when women find ways to rock it!
Debra says
1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no?
No! And the other thing that freaks me out is when they have a baby or toddler in a high chair talking or doing weird movements! Turn it off!
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go? I am so low-maintenance. Well, maybe it’s more I just don’t care. But the Q-tip is it.
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do? We’ve already done that labour of love. There’s just one room and a closet to finish. The next house will be done for me!!
If you want to watch a very funny movie about building a home, “Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House” with Cary Grant and Myrna Loy is a classic!
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately? Silver hoops.
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)? Probably tops. It can get expensive though. And boring. An entire swath of one color will take over a section of the closet Boy! There’s a lot of maroon/burgundy/merlot/cranberry in there!
The hair color change is more of a change-of-identity for a while.
Power Tool Nirvana. Yes, for Dear Husband’s birthday a few years back I bought him a drill. RYOBI was the brand name — I remember walking through the aisles of Home Depot feeling so empowered. The thing weighed a ton!
The salesgal had told me this drill was the finest on the market. And it was – penny by penny. When Dear Husband saw it, he got this almost pained look on his face. A drill on steroids was not what he needed! It could drill through concrete blocks!
He exchanged it for a different drill and a chain saw and there was money left over for me for some MAC makeup!
Debra says
I don’t organize the closet by color though! It do it by type of clothing. I am not an adherent of the Roy G. Biv school of closet organization:
Red
Orange
Yellow
Green
Blue
Indigo
Violet
The light spectrum!
Majick says
1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no? I like the gerbils in the car. I like the new android one with the Roger Miller song but the animals aren’t really talking. Mmmm, sometimes I think talking animals are funny.
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go? Shea butter, bandaids, hair tie and 3 bobby pins, throat losenges, and lip gloss or balm.
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do? Seriously if I could just get the entire thing CLEAN all at the same time I’d be happy. LOL It’s not huge but we’re very, um, earthy. I suppose I would ditch the carpet upstairs and on the stairs for hardwood like the downstairs. El Hub wanted the carpet – I hate carpet. I have a lot of weird stuff and like my house a lot, I’ve been cultivating the “flea market” look for a long time. LMAO
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately? NARS SHIAP LIPSTICK (I’m sick of the snow and winter for that matter. or maybe a scarf, it’s FREEZING!
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)? OMGosh, all of the above! I”m back to my reddish lite brown hair with super blonde chunks under neath in the back and a few highlights on the front. BUT, not too long ago I was a pretty dark vibrant red. I love changing my hair color drastically from time to time. Mostly though my favorite pop of color is lipstick. GO BOLD OR GO HOME! lol
Trude says
1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no? I’m with you, it will always look weird. Homeward Bound is still the best!
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go? I’m big on band-aids and Hollywood tape. I can’t really wear a button-down without that stuff.
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do? I rent, and my landlord/roommate has done a pretty great job, but the windows could use redoing. When the Santa Ana winds blow in hard enough, they can move the blinds even with the windows closed!
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately? My Fossil rose gold watch. I got it for my birthday last year and it’s the perfect size. 🙂
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)? I change my polish every week, but it’s always a solid color. Lately I’ve been more adventurous with lip colors. In love with anything from Bite Beauty!
Allison C says

No fav’s I’m always changing it up.
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)?
Probably hair as well .. but nothing drastic, maybe some red highlights .. woo hoo, livin’ on the wild side .. lol. Would like to do blue highlights though.
Monica.
gina says
1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no?
Ehhhhh not really
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go?
I agree with all of your picks! I also have to have Burt’s bees lip balm & a brush.
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do?
Rip up carpets & completely renovate the bathroom.
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately?
Silver and gold peace sign earnings
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)?
Nail polish. 🙂
Amy says
1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no?
Not usually. If it’s a fake animal (like a cartoon etc.), a fake voice is fine. But I do miss the natural vibe of those old school flicks that show animals being… actual animals. And Amen to Ruchita on the talking babies, haha!
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go?
Hmm no tools, really. Just lip gloss. Usually Buxom these days. I love how it tingles, but just a little bit, and isn’t too sticky.
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do?
Just working on unpacking boxes here! Just moved. It’s all about small steps, reachable goals! I was really grateful to find a friend who is moving next week, so she’s been taking all of my boxes as I unload them – such a great symbiotic thing, she doesn’t have to buy any and saves me from breaking down 101 boxes for recycling!
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately?
I’ve been pretty accessory-free lately. Simplifies things and can be refreshing. Except scarves, which come in handy, such as in the -9 weather we had yesterday.
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)?
It used to be hair – it’s been everything from purple to red to platinum, loved them all! But the upkeep – whew. Now I’d say eye shadow. I just got some Marc Jacobs gel eye crayon – love it! Really goes on smoothly and has a nice, intense color.
Fancie says
1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no?
I’m all for it as long as it’s voiceover style. I agree that the whole moving lips thing looks creepy
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go?
I don’t really carry any first aid tools. Unless bobby pins and panty liners count lol. I should probably start carrying aspirin though
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do?
Build a massive walk in closet. I need all the space I can get lol
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately?
My Guess watch. It has interchangeable bands that are really cute and versatile
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)?
Definitely lipstick! I’m the kinda girl that’ll show up with blue or green lips lol
Kaylee says
1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no? Nah, it seems too fake. I don’t mind if the animal’s thoughts are in the commercial, as long as their mouth isn’t moving.
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go?
I always have a lint roller on hand. I have three fur children (2 cats, 1 dog) and their fur is everywhere, outta control! I am also a lawyer, so I have to make sure I look professional in my suits.
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do? Same as you, take out the carpet and change it to hardwood (yep, 2 kitties = not carpet friendly). It also needs a paint job and perhaps re-facing the cupboards.
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately? Oh, I would have to say headbands because I just joined up a gym and always forget to take it off for the rest of the day – oops.
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)? Lipstick/lipgloss definitely, because even if you choose a bright colour, you can tone down your ultimate look by playing down other features, and your clothes etc.

1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no? NO! And those commercials that have dogs with human teeth? No way! Creeps me out!
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go? Advil because a headache can ruin everything. That’s about it.
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do? I’d put in a water softener, I’d replace the tub/shower combo in the master bathroom, and I’d replace the sliding glass doors with French doors. I think it’s going to happen, it’s just going to take time.
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately? I’m not an accessory person unless I dress up, I only wear a thin gold wedding band. I’m too active for anything else.
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)? Nail polish! I’ve started doing my own gel polish, so I’m slowly replacing my regular bottles of polish with gel polish. Loooooove it!

5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)?
I have a love hate relationship with color. To me color , especially bright colors, are beautiful but I don’t feel so comfortable wearing them, other than in lipsticks I always try to wear anything in the red range in lipsticks…

Kim says
1. Talking animals in commercials: yes or no? I think they’re funny (I’m a fan of the camels). The talking baby for the insurance commercial creeps me the heck out, though. I think the E-Trade one is funny but the little bird talking about the mime gives me the hibbity jibbities. HAHA!
2. Best fashion/beauty first aid tools to bring with you and keep in your purse wherever you go? I have to go with lip balm, which technically is like first aid for dry lips, right? Though I do have band aids/first aid kits in my car and hiking backpacks. Just not my purse.
3. If you could totally redecorate your house, what would you do? Completely remodel the kitchen and bathrooms. Winterize our 3 season porch and add an entryway off our kitchen and a second bath upstairs. Oh, also insulate and re-side the entire house. All my projects are costly, sadly. Naturally, I have other, smaller things like painting the hallways. 🙂
4. What’s been your favorite accessory to wear lately? My jewelry is like my makeup. Same things every day. Of course, I love all of them so they’re all a pleasure to wear.
5. What’s your favorite way to play or experiment with color when it comes to beauty (nail polish, hair, lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, etc.)? Probably nail polish and usually on my toes. Sometimes hair color but it’s more seasonal – slightly lighter in the summer, etc. No big changes, though. I know. I’m boring. 🙂
