You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane?
Honestly, maybe I’ve seen those Taken movies too many times, but I kind of want to sit next to Liam Neeson, because if the sh*t hits the fan, I feel like he’ll know what to do. - How’s your poker face?
It’s lame. What poker face? It’s the worst. I am the first person you want to play poker with because you’ll win every single time. - There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it?
Oh, gawd, no!At least, that’s what the answer is in theory, because it’s infinitely more difficult to cover a popped pimple than an unpopped pimple, and yes, I know this from experience.
Lots and lots and lots of experience.
But there are those times when I’ll get out of the shower, and it’s right there, and it’s staring at me, and it’s SUPER ripe, and it’s ready to go, and I will not be able to resist. Not gonna lie.
- What are five things you’re thankful for today?
Fresh starts, coffee, patience, tabby hugs and concealer. 🙂 - What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over?
Well for me, I’m completely over super sharp, hyper-defined eyebrows.Totally guilty of doing this. I see it on Instagram all the time, and you know, it looks really great on so many women, but on me I feel like it might be a little much. You know, when the brows are super sharp, and you go in there, and you carve them out with your concealer, and the tails could cut glass?
On some people, they look awesome, but on me… I’ve tried it, but I think it’s a little much.
So I’ve been going the “natural” brow look route these days. “Natural” in quotes.
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!
1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane?
2. How’s your poker face?
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it?
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today?
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over?
Rise and shine, pal o’ mine! Happy MLK Day. How are things going out yonder way?
Tabs and I just finished our coffee (well, I did; he supervised), and now we’re getting ready for work, which means I’m about to do my hair and makeup, and he’s climbing his cat tower to take a nap.
Yup, Tabs takes his first nap of the day about 20 minutes after he wakes up, haha. It’s a tough life for a tabby. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane?
Someone I wouldn’t have the guts to bother and be ‘that’ passenger to but who would also be open to small talk with. Someone like…Daniel Radcliffe? He seems cool. Ideally, I’d name one of my top five celeb crushes like Olivia Munn or Chris Evans but I fear I would quickly become annoying to them on a plane.
2. How’s your poker face?
Great. So great that folks who don’t know me often think I am snobby. apparently, I have b*tchy resting face. Which means I have a mean game of poker.
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it?
NO! Just ride it through.
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today?
My sweet lil kitten, Delima. My amazing partner. Taking a rest from my interior design course. Trying out a new recipe. Finally doing the bed after 2 days!
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over?
For now, it would be bright lips. I’ve been doing the bright lip thing for the past year and I’m slowly embracing the nude lip. But what to do with all my bright lipsticks?! GAH.

Hi Karen!
1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane? Someone hawt. Preferably Ian Somerhalder.
2. How’s your poker face? 😐 like that
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it? I try not to but in the end I probably will… and then regret it.
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today? New Bobbi Brown stuff, my fotd that turned out alright even though I hated it at first, the potato mash I’m about to have, snow aaaaaaand, lemme think… more snow?
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over? Vampy lips
Lisa says
1) Mila Kunis. I just feel like if I ever met her, we’d be besties.
2) I think I have a pretty good poker face. I can pull out the blank stare when it really counts.
3) I’m with you on this one Karen. I really try to leave them alone, especially first thing in the morning, because I don’t want to make it even more red and swollen. If it’s super ripe though, and I figure I can get it without doing too much damage, I’ll probably pop it.
4) I’m thankful for coffee, the wonderful weekend I just had, having a week at work where I actually get to do some catch up, the Urban Decay “On the Run” palette I got for my b-day that’s making my mornings so much easier, and the mild winter weather we’ve been having in Central British Columbia.
5) I’m completely over winged-out eye looks, but only because they don’t look good on me. I’m trying to embrace my round eye shape with softer, more rounded shadow looks.
Estefania says
1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane?
Taylor Swift. I feel like she’s such a sweet girl. She’d realize our sense of humor is identical and BAM. My new circle would include Lorde, Ed Sheeran, Karlie Kloss, and Taylor Swift. Success.
2. How’s your poker face?
Terrible. I’m a horrible liar, and I’m also horrible at keeping my opinions a mystery. I once had a friend tell me about a wild night she had, stop mid-sentence, and say, “Stop doing your judgy face! Stop!” Oops.
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it?
Sigh… yes. I’m terrible at leaving those things alone… I’ll regret it one day!
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today?
My job, my boyfriend, my health (a friend has her mom in the ICU right now, and we’ve been on edge all weekend), my dogs, and awesome friends.
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over?
Amen on the HD brows. SOOOOO over it. Also, cream contouring and cut creases. I’ve been softly contouring with the ABH Contour Kit and I feel like that’s a much more realistic way to contour every day. I always get clients at the MAC counter coming in to know how to “contour” and they want the Instagram effect. I just don’t think it’s a very flattering look IRL. Great for pictures, not so much for real life.
Happy Monday, Karen!

1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane?: Maybe Lisa Eldridge? She’s not really a celeb per se, but we could talk makeup for hours!
2. How’s your poker face?: Decent. I will crack eventually, though.
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it?: It depends on how big it is. If it’s smallish and won’t scar, I’ll pop it.
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today?: Indian black tea with almond milk, Wet n Wild Ravin’ Raisin lipstick, my friends, access to the Internet and the ability to exercise (not everyone can do this).
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over?: Contouring. It looks nice at times, but it’s overdone. Not everyone needs it, and many people get it wrong.
Ruchita says
1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane?
Hm, maybe a comedian so they could keep me amused during the flight.
2. How’s your poker face?
Okay, but I’ve never had to put it to use. I do have that resting bitch face syndrome, so I look grumpy all the time even thought I’m not! 🙂
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it?
No. I know from experience, it just makes it worse for me. I might try applying a hot compress to reduce swelling.
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today?
Free cookies at work, sunshine, temps above freezing, not too many meetings at work today, a certain tabby who was rather affectionate this morning.
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over?
Super contoured, sculpted faces.
Happy Monday!

Happy Monday! At the risk of constantly sounding like the weather man, I just had to share the wildest thing. Our temp when I arrived at the rink on Saturday AM was minus 21 F. Our temp yesterday morning – on day later – was 44 degrees. How insane is that? A 65 degree change in one day (same location). I can’t remember anything like it. 🙂 Now, back to business.
1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane? I don’t know. Stephen Hawking. I think he’s probably the smartest person alive so I’m hoping *something* would rub off.
2. How’s your poker face? God awful. It always has been.
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it? Every single time. I know it’s a mistake and my inner voice is screaming at me not to do it but I can never resist.
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today? Healthy family, good friends, a solid job, being nearly 3/4 done my workday and heat!
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over? I think it’s just beginning but bright pink lips. It should also be noted that I was not down with tangerine lips. Really, you know me… if it’s not black honey, there’s very little chance I’m wearing any color. 🙂
Erin says
1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane?
Nikola Tesla. He’d make me feel stupid and we could talk about science. Maybe he could give me some of his work that was never recognized and I could test it.
2. How’s your poker face?
Pretty good. I suffer from Resting Bitch Face.
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it?

1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane?: Melissa McCarthy because she’s so freakin’ funny.
2. How’s your poker face? Perfect. I’m not a real smiley person. I hate my smile. I think I look ridiculous with a big grin, always have so I generally am pretty poker-faced.
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it? I have a giant pimple on my chin right now. I’ve been soaking it with a washcloth dipped in scalding hot water. If it doesn’t recede soon, I may have to excavate. It’s starting to scare Senior Paco Rabanne and his brover, Blue.
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today? coffee, the internet, my husband and son, today’s temp: 45.
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over?

I forgot to answer the beauty trend question: maybe contouring? I’ve never been a fan in any of its trend cycles.
Agata says
1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane?
Gwen Stefani! She came to my mind first and when I was watching the Voice I had a serious girl crush on her. She seems so sweet and genuine and kind-hearted and I would love to talk to her about her gorgeous makeup looks!
2. How’s your poker face?
Not bad I’d say!
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it?
I try not to but I usually end up popping it anyways, against all reasonable thinking and to much regret a second after doing that.
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today?
The warmer weather (by that I mean 36 degree weather, that’s hot compared to temp we had recently), delicious Caramel Nut K-cups coffee, Naked 3 palette, friends I made through blogging and being able to go to Zumba tonight.
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over?
Ombre and reverse ombre hair, I feel like that belongs to 2014! Let’s move on!
Happy Monday, Karen!

Meryl Streep. I adore her acting, she is witty, interesting and she can sing.
2. How’s your poker face?

Yes. I resist throughout the day, and then give in right before I go to bed, regretting it the next morning when I try to cover it up..
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today?
The sunrise (Little Bean has been crying all night, and somehow she stops when the sun rises), Shogun Green Tea, the thought of leaving for NZ tomorrow, the sushi-order that is just about to arrive and heavy duty corrector/concealer.

1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane?
Hmmm, had a hard time with this one. I asked Dear Husband and he wanted to know if this question was for a security code! Most of my famous choices have gone to the hereafter. So if we’re talking Real Life Plane, I’d say Sophia Loren. Maybe she’d let down her guard and confide a few more beauty & life secrets to me.
2. How’s your poker face? Phenomenal. My poker face used to be so good that people thought it was my REAL face. I think it’s more of a blackjack face now.
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it? Only if it is so ripe that it is begging me!
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today? A good night’s sleep, the freedoms that Americans too often take for granted, my loving family, good health, my talents. And the fur babies.
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over? The exfoliation craze. Skin does not regenerate that fast! I don’t follow trends much and I so I did not get into the Joan Crawford eyebrows, partly cause it’s hard to so sharply define blonde, partly cause I have spent way too much time around a Joan Crawford!!
It’s foggy here but I’m fine with it. I don’t get lost in the fog anymore!
Happy Monday, Karen.
Debra says
I’m also thankful for the friends who help me to do, not just say, these words from Julie Andrews: “Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th.”

1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane?
Since it’s Monday and I usually watch Sleepy Hollow (FOX) on Mondays, I’d say Tom Mison (he plays Ichabod Crane in the series). Handsome fella, plus the English accent. *swoon*
2. How’s your poker face?
I got this down! I’ve been told that I look too serious at times, so if I played poker (which I don’t), I’d have no problem.
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it?
I feel you on wanting to pop it, especially when it’s “looking” at you like a cyclops asking to be attacked.
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today?

5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over?
Waterlining. No matter how waterproof the liner (with a slight exception of M.A.C.’s Fluidline), I can’t last even an hour with it.
Katherine M says
1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane?
~Hmmmm…I’m with you on Liam Neeson. I think I’d also want to meet Keira Knightley – she seems so down to earth and did a lot of her own stunts for her action movies (Pirates of the Caribbean, King Arthur).
2. How’s your poker face?
~Terrible – people say they can read my eyes very well.
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it?
~Guilty as charged. However, I’ve gotten better about not doing surgery on them myself until they get a big honking whitehead. I am just Type A and OCD enough that a pimple’s presence really annoys me.
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today?
~The sun, beautiful countryside, my husband, fitness, and my lil baby hamster, Hemi.
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over?
~Overdone hair and makeup. I used to envy girls that had literally perfect makeup (the white/silver eyeshadow, perfect thick black liner all around the eyes, pimples covered with layers of foundation) and perfect hair (so straight and neat all the time or perfect waves/curls) until I realized how long it takes to get that look. Now, I can’t stand that look, the one that I had idolized in high school. I love seeing crazy eye looks and natural skin. I love seeing polished hair but also natural, windswept hair. I love when us women are uplifting of one another and ourselves.

My overall good health, my boyfriend, my apartment, my lipstick collection, and my cooking ability.

2. How’s your poker face?
Pffff horrible. I need to work on that, otherwise I give up my thoughts (are you serious customer? that is the stupidest request ever!) I am afraid
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it?
I really try not to, and when I succeed and it dies its natural death I feel like a heroine!

What about his VOICE!?!
Seriously, he could read the phone book and make it interesting!
Estefania says
OMG. Have him read to me the press releases for makeup collections.
#Heaven
But seriously though. He’s a cutie. All my friends think he looks like an alien, but I don’t see how anyone can resist him! I went to see the most recent Hobbit movie with the boyfriend and I said to him, “I bet he even looks handsome saying he’s going to burn down a whole village…”
tirurit says
OMG you had the best idea ever! Be careful, if there are any spies that report back to the brands we may be doomed!!!!
But yeah. He might be a bit of an odd beauty, but he is definitely attractive. To me much more interesting than the usual “Kens” that the film industry seems to gravitate towards to 😉

1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane? So many! I’d love to sit next to Pierce Brosnan, his outlook on life is amazing and I’d love to pick his brain on how he’s handled fame and such a long career.
2. How’s your poker face? When I really need it, it’s there. But to make a joke, I always crack!
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it? Nope. I have so many scars from over the years I’m totally fine with letting it chill until it’s ready.
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today? Migraine medication, Pepsi Max, Aveda’s straightening serum, UD makeup setting spray and great weather.
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over? The accent nail. I’m just too OCD to be okay with one odd nail! The only pretty version I’ve seen is pale pink with a gold glitter accent for a wedding day.

For acne scars, I use Palmer’s Cocoa Butter in the jar. It works pretty quickly to fade the marks.
Sylirael says
1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane?
Stephen Fry. I think he’d be both incredibly, hilariously interesting to talk to, and very easy to sit in amiable silence next to (very important, because, you know, it might be a 14 hour flight or some sh*t. I can’t talk to anyone for 14 hours straight! 😀 )
2. How’s your poker face? o__o How’s that?
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it?
NOPE. I always get those ones that are basically just a swelling, so if you try and pop it, you will end up having to do minor surgery on your face with a needle – I have done this – to find the actual source of the problem. I just load it up with Bioderma Sebium stuff an wait it out! If it’s a blackhead/filled pore, I will totally squeeze that out. I can’t help it!
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today?
Tea, optical profilers rather than dek taks, UD Demolition liner and 85 page review articles that answer all my questions.
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over?
I’m totally with you on the ‘instagram brow’ thing. Mostly because I don’t like wearing the amount of makeup one has to wear to both achieve and support that kind of brow, and my colouring doesn’t really lend itself to it either! The effect looks really cool on some people, but it’s a bit extreme for me. I prefer to keep my extremes to the lipstick end of my face! ^_^
Karen says
Hi Sylirael,
Oh I couldn’t talk to any one for 14 hours straight on a plane! On long flights my headphones are my best friends.
Speaking of tea, what’s your favorite? I had some today that I’m obsessed with. It’s a barley tea that my mom got me from a recent trip to China!
Sylirael says
I love barley tea, and Japanese rice tea! 🙂 My favourite tea at the moment is one from my favourite tea shop, Mariage-Freres. I think they are in the US now (/online and ship to the US), but I have to get my fixes on infrequent trips to Paris, at the store underneath the Louvre. They have one called The’ Nil (noir), that is just beautiful. 🙂

1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane? Madeline Albright. I met her very briefly at a reception years ago, and she was so warm and friendly. She has the most amazing stories to tell.
2. How’s your poker face? Hmmm, I can do it when I’m playing cards with my signif other but with other people, not so much
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it? So long ago. If I’m not going out, I’d put anti-blemish cream on it. If I’m going out, probably would
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today? sunshine, no snow, temps above 40 degrees, not needing to renew my Costco card yet, & Jeff doing a huge favor for me
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over? I don’t really follow trends so nothing really
Karen says
Hi Allison,
So now I gotta know… What was the huge favor?

1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane? Jennifer Lawrence I think. She seems pretty cool, and I believe she flies on a private plane. Which means I would be on a private plane!
2. How’s your poker face? Pretty good with anyone other than my husband. He can read me like a book.
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it? Yes, yes I do. I know it’s awful, but I just can’t stand it if I don’t!
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today? My family, being healthy, Martin Luther King Jr, kitty nose boops, and above freezing temps!
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over? BB cream. Although I was never really not it, honestly.

1. A famous person you’d like to sit next to on a plane?
Tom Hiddleston, definitely. I am weirdly convinced that we’d get along really well.
2. How’s your poker face?
I think it’s pretty good! Although my friends and partner can see right through it, it helps me with strangers or in work relationships.
3. There’s a pimple on your chin. Do you pop it?
It depends. I usually don’t and attack it with products. However if I have an important thing to go to I would pop it, but in the best way possible: needle, alcohol, etc.
4. What are five things you’re thankful for today?
-Getting home early today so I can relax and take a bath, and still go to bed on time.
-My partner. I am so thankful for him every day.
-My home. I love coming home to this every day.
-Blankets. It’s so cold but a blanket makes everything okay!
-Feeling loved. By friends, family and my partner. It makes everything so much easier!
5. What’s one beauty trend you’re completely over?
Stylised brows. I canceled my monthly HD brow appointments a couple of months ago and I am loving my fuller, messier brows. Never going back again!
