You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s __________
…befriend stray cats. 🙂
They can sense the cat lady-ness radiating off me in waves… Either that, or they smell the treats in my pocket, haha!
Also, I’m like a shoe-shopping savant. I’m the girl to call when you want/need a shoe enabler.
- What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other?
Over the past few months, it’s been Laura Mercier Flawless Fluide Foundation, but more immediately, over the past few weeks, the Hourglass Ambient Blush palette, and the past few days, NARS Pure Radiant Concealer. - How has your life changed this year?
Definitely for the better with my daily working workflow, thanks to a couple of tweaks.I used to start my days at the behind-crack of dawn and have my butt glued to my computer for, literally, 12-14 hours, often without breaks.
Now, I force myself, hook or crook, to get out of my chair by 4 p.m. (and I usually start working at 7:30 a.m.)
Sometimes it’s hard. Very hard. Because I don’t nave a naturally super fine-tuned concept of time (read: I’m always running late), and I’m the kind of person who always like to do a little extra, sneak in a little extra something into her work.
But now I’m a much happier person overall, so I guess that would be the biggest change for me this year.
- One of your greatest indulgences?
Ooh… Sleeping in on Saturday mornings and just waking up when my body feels like it, instead of waking up with an alarm, and then just having a leisurely day.I like to prep the Saturday morning giveaway over coffee (as you know), and either watch some (hopefully brainless) TV or read and nom on something that, ideally, I didn’t have to make, like a croissant from a local bakery.
- What beauty products are on your nightstand right now?
A tube of Hourglass No. 28 Lip Oil, which I put on every night before bed.And a big bottle of Amlactin lotion, which I got at Costco.
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!
1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s ____________.
2. What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other?
3. How has your life changed this year?
4. One of your greatest indulgences?
5. What beauty products are on your nightstand right now?
Happy Monday to ya, sweetpea. How was your weekend?
Mine was nice. El Hub and I drove up to Redding to visit his parents and see their new house, while Tabs held down Fort MBB with his favorite sergeant/petsitter.
Just a laid back weekend, really, but I’m a BIG fan of those. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Kiss & Make-up says

Woah woah woah! When did that happen? Forget about the smokey eyes, I am your reader of the week?! I feel so honored 😀 Thank you, Karen!
Karen says
I update it every Monday! Thank you for reading and always being so friendly in the comments! 🙂
Kiss & Make-up says
Of course! You are one of my biggest inspirations. I love coming here.
LindaLibraLoca says
Stepping in to say hi, as told by Karen in the “Reader Feature” 😉
Chelsea says
1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s ____________. I think I have to choose befriending stray cats too! The marmie and white and tabby kitties tag teamed me at the door bringing in groceries, and tried to sneak in! They love my husband too.
2. What product in your makeup bat/toolkit do you wear more than any other? This discontinued Smashbox waterproof brow stuff in auburn!

4. One of your greatest indulgences? Naps on the weekend with the cat.
5. What beauty products are on your nightstand right now? Olive oil (for my nails), giant tub of Eucerin, and a heel stick thing.
Karen says
Hi Chelsea,
Long time no chat! How have you, Quincy and Jiji been? Good, I hope.
Things on this end are great. I had a nice time visiting my in-laws last weekend and now I’m happy to be home. I think Tabs missed me — he’s currently in the office supervising me. And by supervising I mean he’s taking a nap.
Chelsea says
Quincy got grounded last night for peeing on me when we were snuggling on the couch! Other than that, he’s very active and happy for an old man bunny. He is always jumping on the cpuch with us, which he never used to do. I need to take him for a checkup soon.
Jiji is great, about the same as ever
Very intrigued by looking out the window at the neighbor kitties.
I’m on my lunch at work, nothing exciting here!
Karen says
Oh no. I hope Quincy and his bladder are OK. Maybe he just got so excited that he couldn’t contain himself? My old pup Shauna used to do that.
If I lived across the street from you Tabs would probably have a stare down with Jiji in the window, haha. Tabs spends hours trying to out-thug the neighborhood cats.
Hope everything at work is OK. Do things slow down for you around the holidays?
Stephanie Smith says
1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s ____________. Have the ability to wear ridiculous Pug themed clothing in public! With no shame! I have a Pug, Fanny, and every bizarre t-shirt/sweatshirt/sweater vest/footsie pajamas I’ve found I’ve worn. Third graders think I’m cool. I. Am!
2. What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other? Olay Regenerist daily moisturizer with SPF 50! Because I’ll be 40 in June but don’t want to look it! As for makeup, just a little Urbam Decay 24/7 eyeliner, any color, because I don’t really wear a ton of makeup.
3. How has your life changed this year? I’ve really worked on cultivating relationships this year, growing friendships and making sure that those I love know I love them. It’s been a love filled year!
4. One of your greatest indulgences? Frappuccinos, heaven in a cup! And nail polish, and obnoxiously bright Nikes.
5. What beauty products are on your nightstand right now? Fresh Sugar lip balm, the clear one, I put it on every night. Neutogena hand lotion, and a back scratcher. 🙂
Estefania says
1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s ____________.
Philosophize. Haha I literally a degree in it! I’m very good at detecting poor logic in advertising, arguments, and real life situations. If there’s one thing I’m grateful for in my education, it’s being taught how to think thoroughly and properly.
2. What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other?
Definitely Dior’s Rosy Glow blush. I literally haven’t worn any other blush in over a month! A close runner up would be Benefit’s They’re Real! Push Up Liner. That thing is my ISH. I’ve never made more perfect wings!
3. How has your life changed this year?
Complete 180, haha. I got a real-life job doing something I actually really love, so adjusting to grown up life with grown up responsibilities (WTH is a deductible? lol) has been tough.
4. One of your greatest indulgences?
Makeup shopping. From the moment I approach the store/counter, to the moment I leave, my mind is just going “TREAT YO SELF.”
5. What beauty products are on your nightstand right now?
Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipes, Clinique Laser Repair (I think that’s the name?) Eye Cream, which makes my eye are soft like a baby’s bum!
BTW, Karen. I worked a shift at MAC this weekend and did an au naturel makeover on this gawgeous woman who looked JUST like you! It was trippy! 😀
Karen says
Hi Estefania,
Oh gosh! Well I hope you and my twin had a fun time. LOL! I actually get this a lot — apparently I have several doppelgangers traipsing across the globe.
What colors did you use on her? Cause if it worked for my twin those shades should work for me too!
Happy Monday to you. 😀
Estefania says
I used Quite Natural paint pot all over the lid and into the crease, then topped it off in the center with the neutral, glittery shade from the Red Red Red collection. SOOOOO pretty! Then I used Red Obsessed Casual Colour on her cheeks and lips!
Mineralize Moisture foundation and MSF Natural powder and voila! #Iwokeuplikedis makeup
Ruchita says
1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s ____________.
Bake a perfect chocolate chip cookie. 🙂 You can’t bake it too long otherwise it will get too crunchy.
2. What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other?
Lately I’ve been reaching for this Wet ‘n’ Wild eyshadow trio that I bought on a whim. It’s just a few neutrals, but it’s good for a quick, easy look.
3. How has your life changed this year?
The biggest change was moving into a new house. And I’ve decided I never want to move again. 🙂
4. One of your greatest indulgences?
Taking a bubble bath. I load it with bubbles and light some candles and just relax.
5. What beauty products are on your nightstand right now?
Just this Aquaphor lip treatment. My lips get so chapped in the winter, but when I apply this before bed, it lasts all night.
Happy Monday! I was out of town for work last week, so spent the weekend cuddling with the kitties. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Ruchita!
Happy Monday to you too (and the kitties, of course). Traveling for work is always exciting. Did you go to any place interesting?
Also, re: chocolate chip cookies: sometimes I put in a pinch of salt in mine. You get a nice contrast between the sweet and the salty!
Ruchita says
I went to Kansas City. Not too exciting, but the work part went smoothly. 🙂 I’ll have to try the salt in my next batch of cookies. That sounds yummy!
Oh, and I keep meaning to ask you if you’ve heard of the Cat Town Cafe in Oakland. They have cats up for adoption and you can make an appointment to visit. I follow them on Instagram, but I wish I lived closer for an in person visit. I think they’ve had close to 40 adoptions!
Syah says
If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s __________
care for others. 🙂
What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other?

One of your greatest indulgences?
Sea salt caramels, tea and a good book.
What beauty products are on your nightstand right now?
BITE Beauty Agave Lip Mask. Must-have for the winter.

4. One of your greatest indulgences? Sausages. With cabbage, with lentils. That’s my favorite comfort food.
5. What beauty products are on your nightstand right now? I don’t have a nightstand 🙂 But what I would keep in my bedroom would be my little L’Occitane pure shea butter tin. It really helps my super dry lips.
Karen says
How funny about Excel. Are you an accountant? My best friend works in accounting and she knows Excel like the back of her hand! She can do crazy things with it. I can barely get control of my rows, LOL.
Lulle says
No I’m not an accountant, but I’ve used it a lot in all the jobs I’ve had, and I even taught it to college students. Wherever I work I’m always “the girl who knows excel” people come to when they messed up their spreadsheets. Hey at least they know I exist! 😛
Ericca says
1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s be me. whatever that is in the moment.

1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s …
organize. And stick to the plan.
2. What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other?
Bobby Brown Corrector. I look like a zombie without.
3. How has your life changed this year?
Well, I became a mother. My life has changed in every way possible.
4. One of your greatest indulgences?
Chai Latte. With cookies.
5. What beauty products are on your nightstand right now?
Nuxe Rêve de Miel Lip Balm, LUSH Hand Cream “Handy Gururu” and LUSH Massage Bar (the heart shaped one, I can’t remember the name).
Karen says
Hi LindaLibraLoca,
LOL about the Bobbi Brown Corrector. I was into that for a while but I get concealer ADD and jump around a lot. Do you wear it by itself or layer it with other products?
LindaLibraLoca says
I have to layer it. You know, covering my circles is hard work.
What I put on top varies, but I usually stay true to the corrector.
Recently I used the MAC corrector version because I have it in a palette an try the products I already own more, but it is not the same…
Rachel R. says
1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s ____________.
Tie between researching and advocating. I kick butt at both.
2. What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other?
BareEscentuals original loose mineral foundation in Fair.
3. How has your life changed this year?
We’re a little better off financially.
4. One of your greatest indulgences?
Salon manicures and pedicures.
5. What beauty products are on your nightstand right now?
Any one (or two or three) of a million lip balms I own. NuSkin Epoch Sole Solution. It gets rid of the eczema patches on my elbows and helps with my super-dry winter feet.
Karen says
Hi Rachel,
LOL about the million lip balms. Have you ever tried the Hourglass one? It’s pricey but very effective. I only buy it when I can get it on sale.
Rachel R. says
No, haven’t tried Hourglass. I didn’t even know they made lipbalm. I’ll have to keep an eye out.
Laurie says
1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s… find a bargain. Not to brag, but I’m a master at finding coupons, promotions, freebies, discounts, etc. on almost anything. I think this skill is derived from my nerdy love of research. 🙂
2. Product in my makeup/ toolkit that I use more than any other… This is a tough one because I’m always changing up my routines (mostly because I have psychotic skin and no single approach to skincare/ foundation/ application can ever remain consistently effective for too long). I think it’s a tie between NARS Radiant Creamy concealer in Honey (peachy tinted for the pesky under-eye area) and Clinique’s Super Balanced makeup (as much as I explore… and I buy a LOTTA foundation… I can’t quite find anything that balances/ smooths my combo skin, leaves me looking as naturally luminous as this stuff, AND doesn’t clog my pores). If only it offered a tad more coverage.
3. How has my life changed this year? That’s a tricky one. I’ve been taking more time, this year, to indulge and learn more about my long-held interests (makeup art, reviewing, sharing advice, and using diverse products) in ways I hadn’t fully allowed myself in the past. For a long time, I was kind of hung-up on the fact that I loved makeup and skincare as much as I do… I felt like it was silly, or that I might be seen as superficial. I know better now, though. 🙂 Makeup is sort of my superpower. I sound like a lunatic, but I’m ok with that.
4. What’s one of my greatest indulgences? Blueberry pie. Second in line is eye shadow.
5. What products are on your nightstand right now? Bliss body butter, an EOS lip balm, and Bliss’s The Youth As We Know It eye cream (a new, but worthy investment, I must say).
Karen says
Hey Laurie,
That’s awesome that you can always find a deal! My mom is the same way.
If you know of any good deals on home decor… holla. LOL! I’m trying to decorate my house.
Laurie says
Home decor, you say? If you haven’t already, check out Joss and Main (https://www.jossandmain.com). They’re an online outfit that does flash sales, similar to Rue La La or Haute Look (& both of those sites have also been known to have nice home goods events, as well… could be worth a look!). One Kings Lane is another good one (https://www.onekingslane.com). Joss/ Main & Kings Lane have a good variety, so if you dig around, you’ll likely find items that suit you & el Hubs’s style. 🙂 Happy decorating! Such fun!
Jules says
1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s ____________.
Be ridiculously perky even when completely exhausted. Also, care for animals.
2. What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other?
Lipstick. Currently MAC’s “Good To Be Bad” and NARS’ “Never Say Never” mixed with “Train Bleu”.
3. How has your life changed this year?
I moved to a big city and had to do some emotional maturing. I’m 26, but there’s still room to grow!
4. One of your greatest indulgences?
MAKEUP. I’m almost VIB Rouge, which worries me because I only started shopping there in September.
5. What beauty products are on your nightstand right now?
I’ve been doing a makeup purge – I buy products and then never use them (so I give them away to my friends), but I got distracted and didn’t finish my sorting, so there’s a bunch:
Essie: A List, Set In Stones
Soap and Glory: The Righteous Body Butter Lotion
The Body Shop: Frosted Cranberry Shimmer Lotion
Bath and Body Works: Twisted Peppermint Body Lotion
Make Up For Ever: #43 Moulin Rouge
Urban Decay: Mrs. Mia Wallace, Shame
NARS: Train Bleu, Never Say Never, Dragon Girl, Charlotte, Deadly Catch
Stila: Vivid Violet
MAC: Film Noir, Viva Glam Rihanna II (lipstick and gloss), Good To Be Bad
Karen says
Hi Jules,
26 is a great year. Are you liking city life? I used to live in SF (now I live in the suburbs) and loved it.
Erin says
1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s ____________.
It’s a toss up between come up with great ideas or care for others. I’m also an animal and child attractor.
2. What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other?
HMMM, certainly my mascara but I only have like 2 types of full size mascara. I’d also think I wear NARS TM and Fresh Berry Lip Treatment more than anything else in my stash.
3. How has your life changed this year?
I’m going to abdicate the majority of this question in favor of keeping it light. It’s been a bad year for me especially lately in the health department. I’m not sure I’m ready to talk about it yet though. On the good side:
1. I moved back to the USA which is a mixed blessing but a blessing none the less to be closer to family.
2. I started my blog last December so I’m very close to 1 year of full time blogging.
3. I finally realized a dream of living very close to the Ocean. I’m 5 minutes away from the waters of the Puget Sound.
4. I got to see a wild Dolphin in said sound. Only for a split second but it filled me with joy.
5. My husband and I are going to marriage counseling to learn to communicate better. It’s been a very tough year so it’s been helping. My husband is also learning or attempting to learn how to function as a team instead of me doing 90% of everything related to our home with just him going to work and playing video games all night. He should have learned it years ago but he’s a bit slow 🙂
4. One of your greatest indulgences?
Food, Wine, and Fur Baby cuddles.
5. What beauty products are on your nightstand right now?
Sonia Kashuk’s facial oil, Sibu body cream, Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Night, Burt’s Bees Replenishing Balm, and By Terry Baume de Rose. I also have a tube of açai infused cortisone cream if it counts, I got a wild case of dermatitis from the ER trip last week.
Karen says
That’s cool that you live near Puget sound! I’ve visited the area a few times (my mom had a childhood friend there who we’d see in the summers). Pretty place to live!
Kim says
Happy Monday! 🙂
1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s ____________. Apparently it’s not “quickly come up with witty or interesting reply to this thought-provoking question”. I guess it’s actually be a quick learner. I usually catch on pretty fast.
2. What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other? My Tarte BB cream.
3. How has your life changed this year? I think I’m actually busier with more of the kids’ sports/activities than I have ever been. Seems like it will be a continuing trend for the next six years or so. 🙂
4. One of your greatest indulgences? Red wine on weekend nights. It’s killer on the waistline and probably not so great for the old liver but I definitely look forward to late night movie watching and sipping the vino.
5. What beauty products are on your nightstand right now? None on the nightstand but I have a few on my dresser. A big pump bottle of Suave lotion, a tube of Illume Eternal Nomad Thai Lily Body Butter, a few fragrances (Pacifica, LouLou) and a couple of nail polishes.
Karen says
Happy Monday to you too!
Nothing wrong with a little bit of red, red wine (goes to my head) on a weekday night. 🙂 Do you like big, bold reds? I like my reds mellow and buttery.
Kim says
Good UB40 reference! 🙂 I definitely like my reds smooth and buttery, too. I’m not usually pairing them with food since we’re just sipping in front of the TV, so they have to be drinkable. One of my former coworkers lives in Napa and whenever we’d travel, he’d pick the best “bargain” wines in restaurants. He was like the king of the CA reds. Of course, when I’d get back here, none of them were ever available in our area. That might have been a good thing! 🙂
MonicaP says
1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s ____bake________.
2. What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other? I probably stick with the same mascara. CoverGirl Remarkable Washable Waterproof Mascara
3. How has your life changed this year? It’s a little too “pulled in every direction” I’d like this to change in 2015.
4. One of your greatest indulgences? Baskin Robbins, single scoop (mint chip ice cream), hot fudge sunday.
5. What beauty products are on your nightstand right now? A Sally Hansen hand lotion that just doesn’t get the job done (two thumbs down!)
Monica.
Chelsea says
I can’t figure put how to reply inline on my phone, my laptop is broken. Tabs is so tough!
I’m getting a big new client at work, so things will probably get busier! But its a client I’m really excited to get. I have the days between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day off though, so that will be nice!
Kristy says
1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s …. not to be a copy cat, but befriend and rescue cats. I have 6 cats and connect better with kitties than I do with people!
2. What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other?
While I will switch up my foundation, eye shadows, eye liners, lipsticks and blushes, I ALWAYS use Urban Decay Eye Primer Potion – its the only primer that will do the job for 10+ hours on my greasy lids.
3. How has your life changed this year?
I switched jobs after working in the same field for 15 years. So I have learned a lot about myself, and about the greater world around me, which is awesome in its own right.
4. One of your greatest indulgences?
Tim Horton’s ice caps.
5. What beauty products are on your nightstand right now?
Tarte maracuja oil (I apply it to my freshly cleaned hands and face before bed), coconut oil (same as maracuja oil, plus one of my kitties loves to eat a bit of it) and cuticle cream (my holy grail is dior creme abricot). Oh and a nourishing lip balm!
kristen @ glambunctious says
Good for you, Karen! I’m so glad you’ve gotten your new work/life balance down pat this year. That is so important and you do seem happier and freer! 😀
1. If there’s one thing I can do in this life, it’s ____________. Remember to laugh, even when things seem bleak!
2. What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other? Foundation! Lately I’ve been loving the Maybelline Dream Wonder Fluid-Touch Foundation. Velvety smooth and makes the skin look airbrushed. YAS!
3. How has your life changed this year? I got married to my best friend in April. It truly was the best day of my life!
4. One of your greatest indulgences? Root beer. I have a problem, lol!
5. What beauty products are on your nightstand right now? Glossier balm dotcom (BEST LIP BALM EVER. Karen – you need to check it out! It’s replaced my previous fave the Bite Agave Lip Mask!) and a lovely Aveeno Hand Cream.
Hugs to you and have a happy week! ❀❀❀
Nicole says
How are you finding the Amlactin lotion? I’ve read that it helps keratosis pilaris. Boy is it a bear sometimes. Harumph.

2. What product in your makeup bag/toolkit do you wear more than any other?
Right now: MAC lipstick Twig, but not without my Blinc mascara, and usually an eyeshadow like MAC Gleam, or falling star.
