You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Ponytail, braid or bun?
Ponytail if I’m working out, braid if I’m chilling around the house, sock bun if I’m out and about. You knew I couldn’t just pick one. 🙂
- Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
Ew! Eighth grade, when my first boyfriend — let’s just call him “Bob” — showed up at my house with a posse of friends, and they were all on bikes.I guess they didn’t believe that he actually got a girl to say, “Yes, Bob, I will go out on a date with you.”
I think we went to Taco Bell after that… Just me, Bob and his homeboys.
Pretty dumb.
- Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
I’m more into mattes in the crease, but I won’t say no to a good shimmer…even though they get a little harder to wear as I get older. While we’re at it, let’s just throw some glitter in there too, ya know? Why not?
I like to put mattes in my crease because my crease isn’t naturally very deep, and so mattes, which you can use to make parts of your face look more recessed, makes my crease appear deeper.
- Cool toned or warm toned?
Warm toned. I’m an NC42 in MAC (lately I’ve been loving LM’s Flawless Fluide in Chai), but I also wear cool-toned shadows a lot. My skin tone is warm, but I wear both warm and cool-toned colors, which I think goes back to the whole “mattes in the crease” thing. Cool-toned browns, especially those grayish browns, really make my crease look deeper. - A place you’d like to visit again and why?
Oahu in Hawaii, because when El Hub’s parents lived there (he was born and raised in Hawaii), we were going at least once or twice a year to visit, but now that they live on the mainland, we rarely go back.I miss my old haunts, like Matsumoto’s Shave Ice, which I hear they’ve completely changed, and Haleiwa on the North Shore, and Turtle Bay Resort, which is where we got married.
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!
1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
Let’s just hurry these first three days of the week along so we can get to the food quicker on Thursday. 🙂
I’m not really into the turkey, though… I’m more about the sides, and the dessert. I gotta have my pecan pie, man. It’s my thang!
El Hub and I were thinking about skipping turkey this year and having a crab-fest instead, because it’s crab season out here, which leads me to this question: how would crab taste dipped in gravy? Something tells me it might taste good.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Twyla Munden says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun? I’m with you, ALL 3!! Clean hair is down on day 1, ponytail on day 2 and messy bun on day 3. Braids are the night I wash my hair so I get nice waves the next day when down. 🙂
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on. Went on a date a few years back with a guy from my hometown, he complimented me all night long, we had fun and then no follow thru, no kiss goodnight? worst date ever cause it made me question why I wasn’t good enough to kiss goodnight. lol
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts? Yes- when its night out on the town makeup – add a little sparkle to the inner corner too… however 90% of the time I’m sporting mascara & eyeliner only.
4. Cool toned or warm toned? I switch it up depending on the time of year, I’m a pale girl that tans really well without trying so I have all shades of foundation
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why? South America – I spent 2 wks backpacking in Peru in October and loved every second of it, the people & culture was fantastic. Would love to see El Salvador or Ecuador next.
Happy American Thanksgiving!! nothing beats home made cooked anything!! (I just snagged a loaf of homemade bread from my mom this past wknd!)…
Have you heard/tried the Younique makeup line yet? I just ordered their mascara at a $35 Canadian, which comes in 2 step process of gel & fibers. All the videos I’ve seen on YouTube show amazing results that make the lashes look like falsies. Fingers r crossed!! I get it next wk..
Trisha says
Yes! Let’s get Thanksgiving going already!
1. Ponytail, braid or bun? Ponytail if I’m exercising. Otherwise, I just put my hair down. Although, pigtail braids do look pretty good on me. Maybe I’ll do that today.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on. Maybe not the worst date, but one of the more recent ones. About a year ago, it was a first date. He bought me a hot cocoa and we were walking around a store looking at things. When I brought the cup up to my mouth, the hole in the lid was NEXT to my mouth–not in front of it. I poured hot cocoa down the side of my face, in my hair and all down the front of my coat. Classic Trisha. There was no second date.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts? Shimmery Shadows for President!
4. Cool toned or warm toned? Ya know, they always say you’re either/or, but I’m pretty much in the middle. A neutral gal.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why? The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, because they’ve added Diagon Alley since I’ve been there and I WANT TO SEE.
Christine says
I’m pretty sure just about anything dipped into gravy is delicious! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, I love the food.
1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
Bun! They’re easy to dress up or down. I wear plenty of ponytails, though, because I can be very lazy. Especially those half-pulled-through ones that are like a loop on the back of your head (those are for in my house only, however!)
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
Oof.
I dated this guy on-and-off my freshmen year of college. He loves Robert Pollard and we went a show together around Thanksgiving that year. He knew a bunch of the people there (rabid fans and all) and someone, at one point, asked if I was his girlfriend. He replied, “More like…my closet girlfriend!”
Ouch.
The next week I was diagnosed with strep throat AND mono. I had too much fun leaving him a voicemail telling him he was very much at risk of getting one or the other or both. I didn’t hear from him for nearly a year after that.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
I do it! Sometimes you just need a lot of sparkle.
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
Right now, warm-toned. I have a pretty neutral but very fair complexion so I can go either way. I just dyed my hair a warm bronzey dark brown (my natural hair color is very close, just a much cooler tone) because I need some sunshine in my life and the weather is not giving it to me.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
South Dakota/Black Hills/Badlands – we went when I was around 7 or 8 and I remember it was pretty cool, but I didn’t appreciate it nearly as much as I would now.
Kiss & Make-up says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun? Braid. But I wear all three. I just wear braids most often.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on. I don’t think I’ve ever had a really bad date. That said, I’ve been with my fiancé since I was 15, so yeah, not much room for bad dates 🙂
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts? Line-o-rama 🙁 When I was younger I could pull it off but now it just emphasized lines.
4. Cool toned or warm toned? Warm.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why? The states! And maybe Japan as well. I just have really good memories from both those trips and I feel like I didn’t get to see and do everything I wanted to.
LindaLibraLoca says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
Braid when I make an effort (Dutch Braid usually), messy bun most of the days at home/work. Wearing your hair down isn’t an option with a baby around.
Ponytail used to be my go to, but somehow I disliked the look the last few times I tried.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
I met him at dance school (we used to do this when I was 16), he was an instructor, so grown up, he already had a car!
When he came to pick me up he was wearing an ugly neon orange sweater with stonewashed jeans and my sisters started making fun off him instantly. We went to the cinema, but all I could think about was that sweater, don’t even remember the film. I guess I was a bit superficial those days.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
Depends on my mood. There just aren’t as many good mattes around as there are shimmers. But I have got a pretty decent crease to start off.
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
Warm tones, usually. I am all about those bronzes.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
Israel, Tel Aviv. I went there when I was 15 and was impressed, but I think I would see it with totally different eyes this time. Seeing how much it has changed and how much I have changed would be great.
Gloria says
Yay~!
Finally I decide to participate the Monday Poll.
1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
Always ponytail… too lazy me… and also too slow in the morning.
Braid for my bangs if I have time. Nevertheless, I always wanna try to make a bun on my hard, strong Asia hair so I bought Mia easy bun you mentioned earlier.. Let’s see how it is on me…
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
I haven’t dated a lot. (sooooooo young. hahahaha) But I once went on a date that my mom made me to and it was awkward… Hmm not very bad though. I just feel it’s a waste of time, kinda.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
I prefer matte shadows in the crease, like you wrote. for shimmer color maybe right on the lid? Not a makeup expert.. 🙁
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
Warm tone, warm tone, warm tone.
I still don’t understand / nor can imagine what cool tone skin look like????
What would it be if warm tone skin use cool tone foundation. (lol)
I have darker skin than normal chinese girls (<–they are so fairly white!), so people don't think I'm Chinese! (oh god help me).
Can I ask a question? Is this your real skin color? It looks like your have a natural tan! amazing!
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
(Oahu is definitely a nice place to revisit.)
I probably will go Paris again given the chance. Need to spend more time in the museum.
Need to try really really hard to be productive this week… Not easy to focus right before the holiday.
Wish you a happy turkey day (without turkey).
btw, in China we dip crabs in cooked vinegar with ginger. 🙂
Karen says
Hey Gloria,
Yup, I’m naturally pretty tan. My skin tone gets deeper a few shades in the summer. 🙂
So, there’s a bunch of different ways to figure out if you’re warm or cool toned. One of the fastest way is to check the area in the inside of your wrist — are your veins blue or green? Blue means you’re probably cool-toned. Green veins = warm-toned.
Estefania says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
None! Haha that’s why I cut all my hair off. I’m all about that pixie life!
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
Ugh. It’s a toss-up between an eighth grade boy who invited me to a “party”, which ended up being just a bunch of high schoolers making out while “watching a movie”. I hated it. The other was with my ex-boyfriend in high school. He invited me to a “party” that ended up being just his idiot friends drinking and jumping around in a bouncy castle. I need to stop accepting invitations to “parties”.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
I like ’em. As long as they’re not extremely metallic, I think they can work nicely. I love me some mattes, too, but the shimmers give my eye a little more dimension.
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
Warm toned skin, forever in love with cool toned taupes and browns. Get those bronze and gold shades away from me!!!!
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
Paris. But this time, I’d like to go with my boyfriend. He’s so into the same stuff as I am (art, travel, theater, FOOD), that I think going to such a beautiful place with him would be absolutely perfect.
Here’s to a short work week! 😀
Karen says
Hi Estefania,
Cheers to a short week, woo hoo!
What are you doing for T-day? 🙂
Estefania says
Well, my family is Mexican, and we only became US citizens about five years ago, so we’re still trying to figure out how to do Thanksgiving! Haha we’ve never done any of it, but this year my sister’s coming back from her first semester of college, so we’re cooking a rack of ribs for her. I’ll be taking her to see The Hunger Games before she heads back to school! 🙂
Karen says
Nothing says I love you like a rack of ribs, LOL! Are you a good cook? It’s not my strongest skill, to be honest. My main goal for any dish that I make is that it’s somewhat edible. Somewhat.
So, ribs! I bet it would taste great with all Thanksgiving sides, especially mashed potatoes and corn. Yum!
Estefania says
I’ve told my boyfriend many times that if we were ever to have children, they’ll starve unless he cooks. He’s so creative with food, so he’s usually the one cooking for me! I struggle with the whole “edible” concept…
Tracy says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
Ponytail – slowly working towards braid/bun. After painstakingly growing out a pixie my hair has finally reached my chin.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
I went on a blind date when I was 21. It was raining so I took a cab into downtown Boston. My date met me curbside with an umbrella. It was a nice start but sadly it just went downhill from there. About an hour in he started screaming at the TV like a lunatic (boxing match). I politely asked him if he could bring it down a notch because people started staring and he screamed “You’re not my mother” Oh lord! The night ended with him still screaming at the TV and me paying the ENTIRE bill!!! (forgot his wallet my a**)
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
As I slowly creep towards 40 the shimmer factor is slowly being retired.
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
Both. Even though I’m warm toned I like to mix it up.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
Grand Canyon – My husband and I drove cross country from Boston to California and we had stopped at the Grand Canyon only to find out we couldn’t go because it was a whiteout due to snow. Who knew?
Karen says
Hi Tracy,
OK, I have to ask… What was on the TV that night?
Tracy says
First it was a boxing match and then it was football. Basically sports. I’m a die hard Boston Red Sox fan but I’ve been “limited” to where I watch the games by my husband. LOL. I go into a very unladylike state.
Karen says
Ahh, OK! So that makes sense. I think it would’ve been really funny, though, if he was yelling at something like Gilmore Girls… LOL.
Tracy says
Yikes! That’s a terrifying thought but hysterical at the same time. So glad I’m not in the dating game anymore.
MonicaP says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun? My hair is shoulder length so pony tail which I loop into a semi-bun.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on. Honestly don’t recall any terrible dates.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts? I prefer mat shadows for crease, but if a shadow has a bit of shimmer .. sure.
4. Cool toned or warm toned? Cool toned (but wish I was warm).
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why? Same here – Hawaii (Oahu). There are no bad days in Hawaii 😉 And we didn’t get to go this year so I miss it even more!!
Monica
Karen says
Hi Monica,
Where did you stay when you visited Oahu? El Hub’s family lived on the eastern side, so that’s where we usually hang out.
MonicaP says
We either stay at the Moana Surfrider or the Royal Hawaiian (pink hotel) on Waikiki beach. I just ran out of vacation time to pack in another trip 😛 next year though .. next year 😉
Monica.
Shannon says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
mmmm.. they’re all fantastic, really. The only one I could even think of trying to pull off right now (since my hair is so short) would be a riff on a braid in my bangs or something… so I guess I’ll go with that 🙂
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
Hmm. I’v only been on one actual “date” with anyone besides my hubby! It was in high school, and it was to prom… and I had to leave at 10pm, since my parents were pretty protective. It definitely wasn’t bad, but it was maybe a little odd. Oh, high school.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
If it’s the right shimmer, heck yeah. Like, maybe the dark gold color (blanking on the name) from the UD Naked palette. I love that in the crease!
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
Warm toned, please! I do really well with neutral-toned stuff.. what would you even call that? “lukewarm” toned? 🙂 haha. I don’t do so well with colors that are VERY warm and bright, but hints of warmness are totally my jam. Cool toned shadows, especially, tend to wash me out. (Cool toned lips can be cool, if I’m wearing the right kind of neautral/warm shadow.)
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
Ireland, Ireland, Ireland. Because I love it and it’s beautiful and they speak an amazing native language and TASTY BEER and YUMMY FOOD (read: potatoes) and PRETTY FIELDS and DAMPNESS and STONE FENCES and ACCENTS and OLD THINGS and and and… *sigh* I love it so much.
Also, I’m totally behind the crab idea. I bet they WOULD taste amazing dipped in gravy! (Especially if it was butter-based… mmm…)
Karen says
Hi Shannon,
OK, so I’ve never made gravy in my life. WHO KNEW there was butter-based gravy?!
What are your plans for the holidays?
Shannon says
Beurre blanc! I mean, I guess it’s a sauce, but same difference, right? 😉 Or, really, anything that you start with a roux. nom nom nom.
We’re making a whole T-day dinner – turkey, veggies, pie, mashed potatoes, etc etc – in our tiny apartment and I am STOKED. My husband’s parents and cousin will be celebrating with us, and they are all conveniently wine snobs (read: I’ll be drinking SUPER tasty wine all night) and it is going to be fan.tas.tic.
Leah G. says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun? Today it was a ponytail to work. Normally I’d wear my hair down but we had a long drive in. We commute every so often from Maine to Boston on a Monday (ack) to stretch out the weekend. So we had to leave the house and it was still dark. In fact, I *gasp* did not even look at myself in the mirror until my husband dropped me off at the office (took a quick look in the car). Heh.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on. There were a few double dates that were “meh” in High School but I’ve been with my husband 20 years (since age 17) so I have no bad date stories. 🙂
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts? Sure! That would be fine for an evening look.
4. Cool toned or warm toned? Cool toned. 🙂
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why? I’d like to go back to Iceland! We’ve been 3 times and love the food, people, and scenery (and it’s a quick 4.5 hour flight).
Karen says
Hi Leah,
I have Iceland on my bucket list. When is the best time to go?
Leah G. says
Hi Karen!
September is the best time to go. That way you still have great weather (where you might need a fleece but where it can warm up enough for a tee shirt during the day). September also has more normal day/night sun hours. There’s usually travel specials to be found for September as well. You can do what is called the Icelandic Stopover (stay for up to 7 days before flying to another European destination that Iceland Air flies to–we did that once with Scotland so our 2nd flight was free). 🙂 Thanks for asking..it’s is a very special place and my friends that have been all want to go back!
Karen says
Thanks, Leah! Adding the info to my travel wish list. 🙂
When I eventually make it out there I’ll hit you up for things to do!
Leah G. says
Happy to help! 🙂
Erin says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
Ponies and Buns here.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
OMG, I met this guy on Match.com. We hit it off amazingly well over email(3 weeks of emails). He was cute too so I thought why not. He picked me up and brought me a single carnation. That would be a deal breaker for some women I know but I was ok with it. He didn’t make reservations anywhere and we walked into a Mexican restaurant. The restaurant wasn’t great but he said it was his favorite place to eat in town. Strike one. He said he wanted to take me to a movie but wanted me to choose. I chose one, but then when we got there he insisted we see Ghost Rider because Nick Cage is the greatest actor of our generation. Strike two. Strike three came when he dropped me off and said that he didn’t know if I’d fit in with his crowd of people but thought I was pretty enough to keep seeing. I never called him or spoke to him again and his emails went straight to the trash. He was a completely different person in email and I was deeply offended.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
F*ck yes! I have deep set eyes so I often just do a whole eye wash with something light and shimmery.
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
I have to be more on the side of cool for my cosmetics due to my skin tone.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
Just about everywhere I’ve been in my life! Especially Italy and France!
Karen says
Eek! That guy sounds like he wasn’t very nice!
Erin says
He seemed like a gem from the emails. It was almost like he was a different person!
Tatiana says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
None of the above. Pixie cut. At least for me.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
OMgosh! Too many to list them all. Thankfully, I’ve forgotten most of them since I’ve married to the best man on the planet for 24 yrs.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
I’d rather do matt or satin in the crease. Wish good ones weren’t so hard to find.
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
I’m rather neutral and can go either way. I just don’t look good in warm pinks, violets and purples. They make my eyes look really red, like a rabbit.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
Hmm, so many places, but I have to say Paris. I always want to go to Paris. I love the food. I love the Metro. I love walking and people watching. I love the art.
We’re not having turkey for T-Day. The only one in the family who likes it is the DH. I think crab would be a great idea. Singaporean Chili Crab especially. 😀
Karen says
Hi Tatiana,
Tell me more about this Singaporean Chili Crab! Is it very spicy?
Anna U. says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
I play sports so I always tend to go for a messy bun. I recently cut my hair quite short (from mid back to about shoulder length) and I prefer the look of a messy low bun.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
Haven’t been on one! Have had a few horrendous offers though.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
I love shimmery eyeshadows and don’t mind them in the crease but if I had to choose I would definitely go for a matte shade to kind of keep the shimmer levels under control!
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
Definitely earned toned. Throughout the year I range from and NC30 to NC42ish. I tan really olive though so I find it harder to match foundations when I’m tan because some just come off too yellow! When I’m paler I’m still warm toned but more neutral.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
I recently was in London and Moscow and I loved both of those places so much! I loved London so much I’m seriously considering going to university there. Im hoping to go back soon!
Karen says
Hi Anna,
That’s cool that you visited both London and Moscow. How long were you there?
Kalli says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
Ponytail when I get home from work (it’s actually the lazy, don’t-pull-it-all-the-way-through pony/bun hybrid) and a sock bun on the days I’m too lazy to wash my hair.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
UGH, several years ago on a match.com date. I wasn’t super interested in the guy, but I told myself to be open-minded and he had a lot going for him. Anyway, after much pestering from him, we ended up meeting for coffee at a Starbucks. I had been wanting to meet with him on my day off (I worked hourly at the time), but he was so insistent that I ended up meeting him after work one evening so I was already tired and grumpy. I ordered a skinny latte and he ordered a white chocolate mocha (I was totally judging). The barista asks him if he wants whipped cream and he responds with a resounding “YES.” Now I’m really judging. So we grab our drinks and sit and he then dominates the entire conversation and just comes off very pompous, like when he dogs all the undergrads at his school. I get home later, watch a little bit of Top Chef and I get a message from him asking me to be straight with him and is this going to go anywhere? I say no, I think we would be better friends and he is SO SURPRISED AND DISAPPOINTED. Ugh, it was the worst.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
I do sometimes, although now I’ve been using more mattes in my crease. I have hooded eyes, so half the time you can’t see my fancy eye makeup anyway, haha.
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
I think I’m neutral-toned. I’ve been trying to figure out if I’m warm or cool for ages. There really isn’t a color or tone I can’t wear and I’ve never had a problem picking out a foundation color.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
Rome! I went the summer before last and it was so amazing. It totally exceeded my expectations and I would love to go back to do all the things my mom and I didn’t get around to doing when we were there. It was at the tail-end of a very long trip and we were only there for a couple days.
Ericca says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun? Bun.Ponytail only happens like 30%
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.Too many to count. I actually had a guy who thought that he could spend the night at my apt. long story short I physically had to remove him.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts? Umm,i think I am still on the young side but I dont go for it.
4. Cool toned or warm toned? Warmed for year Mac had me felling like I was on the cool side. Sephora, matched me to 1y11
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why? Domestically, I would always visit NYC time and time again. There is family there, great food, the lifeblood of NYC is movement. I love it. Abroad ,I think If i could visit Ghana again I would.
Elena says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun? I never braid my hair (it turns out terrible even though it is finally pretty long). Usually a pony tail for day to day stuff and if I am in a rush and/or hair is still drying, a bun.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
I think I pushed any terrible memories out of my brain. They are blocked HAHA. I can’t think of a terrible date…but I can think of a terrible bf! LOL.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts? Yes! Well not too shimmery. I kind of do what I want when it comes to eye makeup anyways lol. And if it turns out bad I just start over!
4. Cool toned or warm toned? Cool toned mostly. I have cool undertones in my skin in terms of foundation I wear. I love cool toned palettes. Like the Naked Basics 2 I just picked up somewhat recently-I love it for plain and simple day looks. The only warmer stuff I may wear is bronzer (but it can’t be too orangey in undertone or I look horrible) or sometimes I like to blend some reddish eye shadow into my crease when I am doing some fun eye looks. I think I just naturally gravitate towards mostly cool toned items though.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why? Florence, Italy. I went there in college for a study abroad and have been itching to go back ever since. I love Italy and got to go all over. Now I want to go back with my bf and explore. I spent most of my time in Florence so I know it pretty well and would feel at home there if we went back.
I can never get enough of art so I would love to go back to the Uffizi gallery. When we climbed the duomo in Florence it was hot and a little claustrophobic…but I would still do it again!
I also spent a few days in Paris and would love to go back there. Luckily back then I was pretty unfamiliar with high-end cosmetic lines or Paris would have ruined my budget! lol.
Tatiana says
Karen,
Singaporean Chili Crab can be spicy. But it can also be a little more sweet. If you make it at home it’s as spicy or not as you like it. The place I go to get my fix is more medium sweet spicy. Shiok! Singapore Kitchen in Menlo Park, CA.
http://shiokmenlopark.com
A bit of a drive from the north. Haha.
Karen says
Hi Tatiana,
Oh! Never heard of that place. Making a note to swing by if I’m ever in Menlo Park!
I’d probably make it more sweet, since I can’t really handle too much spice. 🙂
Thank you!
Rachel R. says
1. Ponytail, braid or bun? Ponytail
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
In the 80s was take to the “Oregon Jam,” a music festival with one stage. Almost all heavy metal group, I hate heavy metal. The performances were terrible. Oddly enough, the headliner was Loverboy. They performed well and had a couple hits out at the time, but not my favorite band. Joan Jett was the only act worth seeing; she was amazing. The guy I went with pretty much ignored me the whole time; he was into the music. I went with him to be nice, as I wasn’t really into him. We never dated again.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
I do it all the time. Whatever works is fair game.
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
I’m very fair with neutral undertones. I wear both warm and cool toned makeup.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
DisneyLand. My boys loved it there so much when we went in 2008. They still ask to go back.

1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
Depends on my mood, but I’m generally like Katniss and rocking a diagonal braid. It’s just easier on my sensitive neck.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
I’ve never really been out on a date date?
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
Cool. I’m a pale skinned girl with yellow undertones which in artist terms, is cool toned.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
If you’re basing on “visiting again” on places I physically remember, it would have to be Denver, Colorado; the mountain skyline was gorgeous and everything was so close. I actually lived on Fitzsimmons (which is now part of Aurora) and we lived 20 minutes away from the zoo and all of the museums; the mountains were a 1.5 hour drive!
If you base it on places I don’t remember, I’d love to see Bamberg, Germany again. I was born there, but I have no physical memories of it. Bamberg is divided between the old walled town and the new one (that’s still pretty darn old) that still looks like how Germany used to look back in the old days; it was the only town never hit by bombs or machine fire in either world war. It’s beautiful with a bloody history (just Google the Bamberg witch trials. So awful!)
But, right now, I want to be in Disneyworld or Clearwater Beach, Florida. I’m FREEZING. It’s snowing here!

No, no, no gravy and crab. Must be butter and garlic.

1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
– Bun on bad hair days.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
– He never showed up? Yeah I know.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
– Makeup is fun! Whatever floats you boat.
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
– Warm looks better on my skin but I let the weather dictate the tones. Nowadays, cool like steel.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
– Recently went to Whitsunday Islands, Australia. Living on a boat there > New York weather.

1. Ponytail, braid or bun? Tiny little ponytail right now, because I stupidly chopped my hair off this summer. When it’s longer, bun all the way.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on: Well, there was that time I got married and he moved in with his girlfriend the week before our first anniversary… does that count? 😉
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts? Not so much. I’m almost 40 and am really paranoid about being age-appropriate. I don’t want anyone saying “Oh, bless her heart, she’s trying to be 23.” (I have heard people say that about my aunt- she has issues.)
4. Cool toned or warm toned? Cool toned, but (humble brag, lol) I can wear almost any color I want. I just have exactly the right coloring.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why? Savannah, Georgia. I love it, it’s just so, so very Southern. Full of history and mystery. And I could buy every single thing in the SCAD giftshop. And afternoon tea at The Tea Room. I also loved Washington DC, because I am a huge museum nerd. I could live in the National Gallery of Art.

1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
I used to be much better at braiding my own hair when I was younger. Now that I’m rusty and have layers and bangs that are growing out, I can’t seem to get any braids to look right. I’ve promised myself that, as a condition of growing my hair out, I’ll try to practice again and get back in the groove once my hair is a little longer. So, the braids are in progress!
My hairstyles are very much related to the situation. If I’m at the gym, my hair’s in a ponytail. If I’m at home watching Netflix on my couch, it’s in a messy bun. Otherwise it’s down, doing its weird slightly-wavy bedhead thing.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
I have been on a lot of bad dates! My ex was a total jerk, and I met some weird guys through online dating. I really wouldn’t know what to pick. Thank goodness I met my husband. He more than makes up for it.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
I’m not averse to it, but I’d prefer to lay down a matte first, at least, and save the shimmer for the outer V. I’m just so used to putting a matte in the crease, I guess. That was one of the first makeup tricks I learned.
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
I have warm undertones, but I’m really pale, so I seem to be able to wear either. I’m loving the cool-toned shades right now, though! Too Faced Boudoir Eyes has been my go-to palette for the past week.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
Rome! My husband and I went there on our honeymoon. We loved it, but there was so much to see and do that one trip could never suffice. I’m not sure what I’d eat there if I went back, though. I’ve found out since then that I’m lactose intolerant, and if you’re a vegetarian in Italy, it’s impossible to eat a meal without dairy. Other than that, I’d love to go back to D.C. and just wander around the museums.

1. Ponytail, braid or bun? Ponytail, all day, every day! So often in fact, that I wonder why I have long hair in the first place.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on. OMG. Okay, I went on a blind date, a double date, with a guy named Michael. I think I was 16. We watched “Sleeping With the Enemy”. He didn’t say two words to me. It was frustrating.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts? Sure! Why not? Not glittery, just a little shimmer.
4. Cool toned or warm toned? I’m cool toned, but I think mixing the two a bit makes for a more uniformed look.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why? Idaho! Boise. It was clean, the people were nice, no graffiti, I loved it! I’m in Central California, so it’s dirty, people aren’t overly nice, and graffiti is normal.

1. Bun. My head looks weird in a ponytail because my permanent natural part sticks up so the bun camouflages it. Way too lazy to braid.
2. A first date when my (very sweet)dog bit the guy. I trusted my dog and left.
3. Only a little shimmery, not too much since I have shallow creases.
4. Warm and cool. Everything goes with black hair and neutral skin.
5. Big bear……there’s never enough snow in my life.

If by “gravy” you mean a pound of melted butter, then I think it would taste fantastic. Because what wouldn’t taste fantastic with a pound of melted butter? 🙂 I like your crab idea, btw. Show thanks with something you enjoy! I’m all about the stuffing and gravy, myself. I’ll trade you my piece of pie for your stuffing. 🙂
1. Ponytail, braid or bun? Ponytail all the way. I’m too lazy for anything else.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on. Probably my first date with the Hubs. We were both under the weather, watched a terrible movie (Kiss the Girls) and ran into friends of the parents of his VERY recent ex at dinner. Thankfully things could only go up from there on date #2.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts? It wouldn’t matter; my eyelid droop would make any color unable to be seen. 🙁
4. Cool toned or warm toned? It’s crazy sounding, but I’m not sure. I’m pretty sure I’m cool. Well, cool *toned*.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why? Bavaria. It’s lovely and where my mother was born and raised. Her family is all still there and I’ve only met them in person one time.

I don’t know much about Thanksgiving, I’m European, but the idea is appealling. Saying “Thank you” for all the small and great miracles that have happened in the past year. To me, gravy seems appropriate anytime of the year, so let’s give thanks for gravy (I assume Tabs will agree).
1. Ponytail, braid or bun?
Ponytail definately, since it’s far more easy.
2. Tell me about the worst date you ever went on.
Ok, it was my first internet-date after a long-term relationship. Our emails were OK, but when I met him in person, I was immediately turned-off. There was already an awkward silence after 5 minutes, and I still managed to keep the conversation going for about 1 hour, but is was hard work. Then we said goodbey and he felt obliged to give me a kiss (on the cheek, thank God!). Actually, the worst moment was the next day when I phoned him to say there was no real connection from my side. The long silence on the other side of the line was devastating.
3. Shimmery shadows in the crease — your thoughts?
At the moment, I’m 45 years old, I put whatever eyeshadow I want wherever I like it. OK, there are fine lines and wrinkles, but they’re not bad enough to stop my love for shimmmery and, say Hallelujah, glittery eyeshadows.
4. Cool toned or warm toned?
I prefer warm toned colors, but since I’m fair-skinned with blue eyes, most people tell me cool colours suit me beter. So I enjoy both of them ;.
5. A place you’d like to visit again and why?
United Kingdom, although I’ve been there a dozen times already. I love their conservative approach to buildings and historical places, their effort to maintain history, despite economical recession or natural decay. Also, the natural landscape is very varied and inviting for walks.
From a romantic point of view, I would like to revisit the Champagne-area in France, since it was our Honeymoon-destination.
