You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Stay in or go out?
Let’s go out! Take me somewhere I’ve never been before, and show me something I’ve never seen. - A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing?
Laura Mercier’s Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide Foundation.Oh! It’s the stuff of legend. Full coverage, feels lighter than Fred Astaire looks on his toes, smoothes out pores, and it’s more comfortable than a great pair of socks.
- If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do?
I wish I could say I’d do something eccentric or extravagant like hopping on the very first plane to Kauai with nothing but the clothes on my back, or going to an animal shelter and proclaiming, “I will take ALL of the kitties!” but things like that would have to wait until after I took care of some practical things first.Assuming I’d already signed the back of the ticket and hidden it away in a secure location, the first thing I’d do is find a good lawyer, then a good financial advisor — both of whom have extensive experience shepherding lottery winners.
I guess I’m just boring and responsible that way…
- What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up?
Oh, man, I had so much random crap on my walls when I was a teen. I remember a HUGE New Kids on the Block poster; I think they were all sitting on a stoop and smiling up at the camera. It was hung right beneath a framed picture of five kittens, each a different color, that my mom embroidered by hand. But my pride and joy was a Nagel-esque picture of an ’80s lady with a single tear rolling down her cheek and a caption that read, “Memories…” My grandma got it for me from a poster store at the Newpark Mall for my sixteenth birthday.
I wish I still had that thing…
Oh, and I also had a movie poster for Casablanca hanging just above my desk.
- Do opposites attract?
Sure, why not? Based on my dating experiences, though (mind you, I’m happily married now and have been with the same guy for 13 years), I think it’s easier on the relationship when you’re not constantly at odds with each other over hot-button topics like religion, politics, kids — that sort of thing.
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!
1. Stay in or go out?
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing?
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do?
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up?
5. Do opposites attract?
Good Monday morning, my friend. 🙂
I always make my first cup of coffee extra large on Monday mornings…and then I treat myself to a few minutes of Karl.
Here is your Karl Lagerfeld quote for the week:
“Change is the healthiest way to survive.”
— Karl Lagerfeld
Word, Karl… Word. We may disagree on sweatpants, but we’re in tune on this.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Kiss & Make-up says
Happy Monday, Karen! Hope your week is off to a better start than mine, ugh.
1. Stay in or go out? Staying in is fun! But so is going out… So how about a nice balance between the two?
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing? Right now? Definitely my new Smashbox Cherry Smoke palette!
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do? Pinch myself to see if it’s real!
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up? Oh just typical teenage girl stuff. Boy bands. Leonardo Dicaprio. Singers that I wanted to be like when I grew up.
5. Do opposites attract? I don’t think so. But they can help each other to become more balanced I think.
MonicaP says
1. Stay in or go out? Stay in .. I dislike crowds and people yacking on their phone – non stop. You have to have a conversation while shopping at Target, really?
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing? Foundation
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do? Go to Hawaii for a month long vacation, then do all that lawyer/finance stuff .. lol.
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up? I only remember a Def Leppard poster on my wall.
5. Do opposites attract? Yes, but I don’t think it makes a great relation ship long term. It’s best to find someone who likes the things you like.
Monica.
Stephanie Smith says
1. Stay in or go out? Go out! I’ve been a bit of a homebody lately, I need to get out!
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing? I’m not a huge makeup wearer, I’m a huge fan of Fresh Sugar lip balms. Also, the Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliners are my favorite, any color except black.
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do? College funds for my two kids. Then I’d hop on a plane to Spain for a month and eat my way through the country!
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up? I had a poster of Madonna from her “Vogue” video, VanGogh’s “Cafe du nuit”, and a Tommy Page poster, life sized, in my closet.
5. Do opposites attract? From my experience, married 18 happy years, there’s always a talker and a non-talker, which is funny. But I think that couples have to agree on the important things.
Dominique says
1. Stay in or go out? Stay in and go out, both !
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing? Lipstick/lippies
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do? Donate 50 % to the environmental cause ( euh well no, not all 😉 )
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up? Perfumes ones, exhibition ones ( painting ) and Fame, I was a huge fan of the movie and the show !

Ruchita says
1. Stay in or go out?
I’m usually a stay in type of person.
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing?
I’ve been loving the Neutrogena Moistureshine lip glosses. I remember seeing them on your blog once and now I always keep one in my purse.
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do?
Great minds think alike, because my first thought is also Kauai and kitties. 🙂 I would even consider getting a private jet so I could take the cats with me and live in a house and spend a couple of months on the islands. But I would go the responsible route also and make sure all the money was invested properly, etc.
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up?
I had band posters like U2 and Garbage. I also used to cut pictures out of magazines and make collages on posterboard. Yeah, this was before the Internet!
5. Do opposites attract?
Definitely! My husband is my opposite in the sense that he is a lot more outgoing and extroverted than I am. He’s definitely a go out type of person, so then I enjoy having the house to myself sometimes. 🙂
Happy Monday!
Andee Hernandez says
1. Stay in or go out?
It truly depends on the mood! I like low key events then again I also love a good dress up function.
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing?
Right now I am loving Younique’s 3D Fiber Lashes. It took me a few tries to get used to them but now I love them. They add volume and length to your lashes and if done right you look like you have falsies or extensions on. I have used many other eyelash fibers but these by far are the best! And they are all natural, derived from green tea leaves. Well worth the $29 dollars!
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do?
Wow- the possibilities are endless, but like yourself I would consult a lawyer and a financial advisor. I wouldn’t want to end up on one of those Multimillion Lottery Losers exposes, because I do love to spend!
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up?
Growing up I had a poster of the New York Yankees top hat emblem and a poster of Dr. J going in for a dunk. I was such a tomboy that’s why it is so amazing how much I love makeup and stuff now!
5. Do opposites attract?
I think they do on accident!
Leah G. says
1. Stay in or go out? Go out (on a hike or adventure)…but with friends it’s nice to stay in and enjoy dinner together!
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing? Dandelion powder by Benefit. (although in the summer I wear bronzer but I’ve been using Dandelion daily for YEARS.
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do? Pay off the mortgage on the home and the rental property (I know, boring, right?)
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up? In college I had an XFiles poster but as a kid I had various boy band posters (Karen, I totally remember the one of NKOTB sitting on the steps!)
5. Do opposites attract? They do indeed! This October me and hubby will celebrate 20 years together. We are opposite in so many ways but it works!
realitygreene says
1. Stay in or go out?
Stay in. Don’t get me wrong, I love going out occasionally – getting all dolled up with my make up and outfit and just having a good time over dinner or at the bar or some other social event, but I do prefer a good night in.
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing?
NYX powder blush in Mauve. I have a small-ish blush collection so I honestly don’t have many options to begin with, but this blush is just perfect for everyday wear. It goes with any make up look (from neutral to bold) and is great for all seasons, it’s pigmented enough and lasts all day!
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do?
Same as you, Karen! I’d hire a lawyer and accountant. From there I’d pay off my student loans and my one credit card. Then, I’d get pretty much everyone in my immediate family a car. Nothing extreme like a BMW or Ferrari, but a nice reasonable car. Then, I’m get my owner house, hire a decorator, do a little shopping, and then while my house is being decorated I would go on a few vacations. I’d definitely start somewhere in Europe. I know that was more than the first step I’d take, but I got a little carried away. 😀
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up?
Rock bands – Good Charlotte, Green Day, Slipknot, etc. Oh, and Jesse McCartney.
5. Do opposites attract?
I like your answer for this one as well! 🙂
Rachel P. says
1. Stay in or go out? – Out! Out! Out! I love showing off a new look, hairstyle, meeting new people, laughing with old friends, clinking glasses a new hot spot or a favorite bar… I loooove going out (provided I have the extra cash!)
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing? – These days, it’s Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara. It really ended up being just as good as everyone said! Also, Benefit Lemonaid. A friend gave me hers (she never used it and I wiped off the top/used layer) and it has been awesome for my under eye!
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do? – That is easy: pay off my student loans! Not glamorous, but it would re-open my world… no debt, no horrifying financial constraints!
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up? – Tons of random stuff- teenybopper pop stars, some animal posters from Ranger Rick and ZooBooks, some of my own drawings and art.
5. Do opposites attract? – I think they can, but I don’t think that’s the typical case. Most people I know who date & end up together are incredibly similar. Many shared interests (not everything, but most things), similar socio-economic backgrounds, similar values… I know very few opposites-who-attract(ed) in person!
Kim says
Happy Monday!
1. Stay in or go out? It depends (always the bet hedger). We’re usually so busy that it’s a rare treat when we can actually stay in and relax. That said, I’m never too tired for dinner and a movie or visiting with friends.
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing? Still loving Chanel Malice!
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do? Turn it over to the Hubs who would definitely go your route in the planning dept. I may not be a strong money manager but he is and I freely admit it. 🙂
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up? I know I definitely had a KISS poster on my closet door in grade school and, when I got into high school, I had other framed black and white prints like the Maxell guy in the chair (facing a speaker), Ansel Adams pics and famous European architectural pics (the Louvre, Colosseum, etc). I had a long-term black and white phase. I’ll actually be thinking about this all night, now, because I’m forgetting a lot of it. 🙂
5. Do opposites attract? I think at first they do. But after the physical attraction fades, they’re just kind of left with the bickering. Of course, some people like that kind of constant tension and drama so it works for them.
Allison C says
1. Stay in or go out? Go out, for sure!!!
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing? Too Faced Lashgasm
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do? Retire and travel the world
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up? a photo of Mia Farrow when she had long hair and was young
5. Do opposites attract? Clearly. My signif other and I couldn’t be more different, though fortunately we have a couple of things in common
Erin says
1. Stay in or go out?
Depends on the day and my finances. I’m a 60/40 gal. Prefer staying in but not always.
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing?
I have several, mostly lip products. I love Fresh Berry Lip Treatment, all my Revlon Lip Stains, and Burt’s Bee’s Lip Shimmer in Raisin.
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do?
Get an accountant and a lawyer stat. Pay off all my own debt and then start gifting my friends and family!
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up?
I had Monet’s and Van Gogh’s on my wall.
5. Do opposites attract?
Yes! Doesn’t always mean it is a good match.
kristen @ glambunctious says
1. Stay in or go out? Stay in. I’ve been under the weather the past few days so I’d like to take a hot shower, ‘jamatize, and then cozy up on the couch with a steaming mug of decaf and some soup and Netflix it.
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing? Too Faced Chocolate Soleil bronzer. After 17 months (!) of near-daily use, I’ve finally hit pan and I want to use it completely up!
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do? Oh man, same as you – I’d get an attorney and a financial planner FIRST. My to do list would then begin with deciding where we’re moving (I’m thinking AZ, NM, or CA), buying homes there for my mom and for us, and paying off everyone’s debt. Don’t worry though, my Pinterest Beauty Wish List would get taken care of pretty quickly as well. 🙂
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up? OMG I remember that NKOTB poster!! I had one of those too, and a really cool Rolling Stone cover of the 90210 gang that my mom decoupaged and had framed.
5. Do opposites attract? My husband and I love the same things, find humor in the same things, and get along like PB&J. I don’t think I could have married someone who was opposite of me on every level because I value peace and harmony too much! The only place we’re very different is financially; he’s incredibly responsible and forward-thinking and I’m…not as good. It’s been wonderful though b/c he helps me stay on track for the bigger life goals like buying a home and having good credit, and I’ve helped him learn that sometimes it’s fun to treat yourself.
Have a great week, sweetums! <3
Yuri F. says
1. Stay in or go out?
I love to do both. Whenever I feel like being a homebody, I stay home, read a book, or curl up to watch a movie marathon. When I feel like going out I go to dinner and a movie, shopping, or just cruze with my music blasting!!
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing?
I absolutely LOVE Better than Sex mascara by Too Faced. I like to have that additional black eyelashes to complement any eye color I have going on.
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do?
Well of course I would yell “I’m Rich!!!” at the top of my lungs and tell someone (can’t keep THAT in). lol. Then do the whole legal thing. Pay all my debt. Go to DISNEY WORLD. Travel the world, stopping @ South Korea first.
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up?
I of course had a poster of white dalmatians that said “Individuality” on top of it, 90210 puzzle poster of Luke Perry and Jason Priestly, A quote ” Don’t tell me what I’ve done WRONG, tell me what I’ve done RIGHT.”
5. Do opposites attract?
Of course. Relationships would be somewhat boring if there is not back and forth action and/or debates on certain things/subjects. Up to a certain extent of course.
Rachel R. says
1. Stay in or go out? Go out
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing? Sephora lipstick in Cougar
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do? Hire an accountant, financial adviser, and lawyer. Pay off hubby’s student loans and all our debts, including the house. Buy my mom and brother a house, and hire someone full-time to take care of my mom. Then take a long vacation to Disney World.
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up? It was the 80s: In grade school, I was all about cats, especially fluffy white ones. As a teen, unicorn posters and a whole wall plastered top to bottom with Duran Duran pictures/posters. I think I had a couple U2, a-ha and Def Leppard pictures in there, too.
5. Do opposites attract? I think basic values and beliefs need to match up pretty closely, but I think opposite personalities do attract.
Jen says
1. Stay in or go out? Go out to someplace new, for sure!
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing? Clinique’s Pink Beach lipstick. It’s the Butter Shine formula so like a glossy lipstick. Love that color!

4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up? I didn’t have many posters, but I had a ton of stuffed animals.
5. Do opposites attract? Nah. Only on the little things but I agree with my previous commenter that the basic values and beliefs should be pretty similar to be harmonious.
Fancie says
1. Stay in or go out?
It depends on my mood. I’m more of a homebody though so I’ll probably choose to stay in.
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing?

Johnny Depp, The Bangles
5. Do opposites attract?

Sylirael says
1. Stay in or go out?
It depends if I have a plan or not. I’m not really one for going out just to wander until you find something – I prefer to have a couple of choices already in mind for destination! If I have no plan, probably stay in.
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing?
Laura Mercier Caviar Stick in Amethyst – it’s just so easy, and looks so good! It also lasts FOREVER on me. 😀
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do?
Heh, probably the same as you Karen! Once all that was out of the way though, I would make some secure investments, pay off my student loan, give my parents a holiday, do something to help out my grandmother and (sadly) ailing grandfather, and plan a trip to Japan with my sister. I’m not gonna lie though, the Marc Jacobs eyeliner holiday set might happen too 😉
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up?
I had beautiful (self chosen and applied with help from my Dad) wallpaper on my walls as a kid, so I didn’t put anything on it. I did have some pieces of embroidery that my mother did framed on my dresser though 🙂
5. Do opposites attract?
…Yes, but only certain kinds of opposites. I also think that it depends how they’re opposite, and how it all fits into their lives. As you say, I think it’s harder to be ‘opposite’ on those big ticket issues, whether the relationship is a marriage, a partnership, or a friendship.
Efraín says
1. Stay in or go out?
Stay out, I love my home but I love going out and discover new places.
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing?
Clinique Bashful Plum blush, I swear it’s almost impossible to over do it but it makes me look fresher.
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do?
I’m as bored as you, so after I pay all the family debts and after spending some in not really important things I hire the lawyer and the financial advisor.
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up?
Erm I didn’t have any poster but now I have my name written in Japanese.
5. Do opposites attract?
Yes but it’s better to have things in common.
Well my friend, last Saturday I started as an amateur makeup artist for a university online program so I’m saving to get all the stuff I need.
Squeaks says
1. Stay in or go out? Stay in! I’ve been incredibly fatigued lately, so staying in and recharging is what I need.
2. A piece of makeup you can’t stop wearing? Almay’s coloured lip gloss/balm critters, and Tarte’s Vitamin infused lipgloss in “Zen”. I’m trying to get more into the darker fall lipstick trend.
3. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d do? Go shopping! Then I’ll take care of my family, and then donate the rest to an animal rescue charity or adopt a boatload of kitties.
4. What posters and pics did you have on your walls growing up? Ah… lots of Julian Sands, Sean Bean and other assorted older English men. Ahem.
5. Do opposites attract? Yep! I’m a small peppy perky sort, and I always attract the tall dark and handsome sort.
I’d like to share a story as well, if I may.
I work beside a bakery which unfortunately has a bit of a mouse problem. They’ve put down traps, but I’ve never seen any results… until today. I was taking the garbage out and discovered a poor little mouse with a badly injured tail, among other things (I shan’t go into details, suffice it to say I knew she wouldn’t last long). Something sparked in me, and I scooped up the mouse in a pseudo-swaddling wrap of paper towels, put her in a shoebox and took her home with me (I think I had a harebrained idea that she would last the night and I would let her go the next day).
Unfortunately, she passed away a few hours after arriving home.
I’d like to think that her passing was relatively comfortable, she was warm and safe and dry (it was about 50 degrees Fahrenheit and raining outside). I just – I couldn’t leave her suffering like that (and yes, I thoroughly disinfected everything afterwards and safely disposed of her little body).
I’m sorry, I just needed to tell someone.
Rachel P. says
That was very kind of you to be so nurturing and compassionate with the mouse. Thanks for sharing.
Karen says
Hi Squeaks,
I meant to respond to you this morning. I also wanted to compliment you on your compassion. It’s a valuable and sometimes missing trait in people these days.
Even when we have to do what we have to do, and it’s something that isn’t easy.
