You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Spam (as in the canned “meat”): love it or leave it?
Ugh…as much as I hate to admit this, I kind of love it. 🙂 Not gonna lie. Even though I’m not a big meat eater anymore, sometimes I crave eggs over easy, fried Spam, rice and ketchup. I grew up eating that kind of thing for breakfast (it’s a Filipino thing), and occasionally I’ll still get a hankering for it. - Love smells like [FILL IN THE BLANK].
- Freshly baked chocolate chip cookies
- El Hub right after he gets out of the shower and gives me a big bear hug
- My parents’ house at Christmas
- Tabby’s stinky kitty breath first thing in the morning
- Have you ever had really terrible bangs?
Well, I was a tween in the late ’80s, so yes, I have. And they were TERRIBLE! They looked like a Brillo pad that someone had just used to clean a BBQ, LOL!No matter how hard I tried, I could never get them to look the way I wanted them to — like the big haired bangs all the cool girls had at my school.
Not my best hair years, that’s for sure.
- When you take selfies, do you ever make those kissy/fish faces?
I’ve tried a few times, but I must be doing something wrong with my kissy fish face looks because, yeah, not cute. - Do you ever see wild animals where you live?
OOH! Wild animals… Sounds so primeval. No, no lions, tigers, bears and that sort of thing, but we do see coyotes, raccoons, squirrels, foxes, turkeys, deer and the occasional bunny rabbit.
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!
1. Spam (as in the canned meat): love it or leave it?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. It’s back-to-school week, isn’t it? If you’re currently in school, what are you studying? I was sort of a confused academic soul. I studied two totally different things, English and Biology.
My folks wanted me to be a scientist or doctor, but I was more into artsy stuff… Go figure. 🙂

Vanessa says
1. Spam (as in the canned meat): love it or leave it?

2. Love smells like Holiday dinner, blankets fresh from the dryer, grape Bubble Yum and (unfortunately) hockey gloves. 🙂
3. Have you ever had really terrible bangs? Oh, my, yes. Also a victim of the 80s. I had the “cool” mile high bangs and trust me, that was just as bad as the Brillo!
4. When you take selfies, do you ever make those kissy/fish faces? I’ve actually never taken a selfie but sometimes I’ll make that face when other people take my picture (jokingly but also to reduce the chinless, moon face look).
5. Do you ever see wild animals where you live? All the time. We have tons of bunnies, skunks, foxes and racoons in town.
On a completely different note, have you been watching the Leftovers? The show is decent but, holy cow, Justin Theroux is hot. I never knew! A bit short for my taste but, dang!

5. Do you ever see wild animals where you live? Not too many wild animals in downtown Baltimore…although once when I was running I saw the cutest little fox on someone’s lawn. And a couple months ago we had a bull that escaped from a slaughterhouse running around downtown. He was just trotting along a median strip on a very busy street…the police shot him. 🙁

Paige says
1. Spam (as in the canned meat): love it or leave it?
I LOVE Spam! Give me a couple slices with some fried noodles and fried egg on the side, or on top of a steaming hot bowl of instant noodles with lots of soup! To lessen my guilt though it will not make a difference anyway, I add a few miserable chunks of broccoli. Hahaha
2. Love smells like Hubs at the end of a work day (I love his natural smell mixed with D&G Light Blue), the kitchen when Hubs is cooking, my grandmother with her whole army of medicated oils, and Chloe perfume.
3. Have you ever had really terrible bangs?
YES. I was dating a Taiwanese guy in the past, and to look “cute”, I cut my bangs to look like one of those cute Taiwanese actresses, or even the Korean ones. Sadly my face structure and looks belong to the more mature type, so for 6 months I felt like wearing a cap to work everyday (except I cannot!) and using a whole bottle of hair spray to fix my bangs into a permanent “side parted” style. I really looked so darn weird. NO MORE BANGS.
4. When you take selfies, do you ever make those kissy/fish faces?
I’d rather look cock than look cute. Cross-eyes, face in spasms and the reverse lip bite (Hubs told me he finds ladies who bit their lower lips cute, so I purposely brought my lower jaw outwards and did a chew on my upper lips, gorilla style… He never talked about his favorite poses anymore after that hur hur) are my go-tos.
5. Do you ever see wild animals where you live?
Squirrels, snakes, foxes and groundhogs count? I will like to see some deer, but I doubt they will venture this far out of the park which is less than 10 minutes by driving from my place.
Kylie says
1. Spam (as in the canned meat): love it or leave it?
Ew, leave it! Never had it and no desire to try.
2. Love smells like [FILL IN THE BLANK].
Fresh peonies. I received them as a gift as a teenager and just smelling them brings me back to that place. Also– lilac bushes. We had them in spades at the farm where I grew up, and the scent reminds me of a childhood while not always happy, was always filled with love.
3. Have you ever had really terrible bangs?
Only as a young child did I have bangs and they honestly weren’t awful. I’ve always known bangs on my round face would not be a good look, so I’ve never had them since I controlled my own hair.
4. When you take selfies, do you ever make those kissy/fish faces?
Only on occasion. The last time I did, the recipient asked if I was just making a weird face or blowing a kiss. I guess if they have to ask…that’s not a good sign.
5. Do you ever see wild animals where you live?
All the time! A few months ago, I was getting into my car when a woodchuck ran out from underneath the car and across my foot. Eek! I see deer pretty much all the time, and lots of small animals like raccoons, bunnies, skunks, groundhogs, etc. Wild dogs/coyotes are very common and bears have been spotted a few times over the years.

5. Do you ever see wild animals where you live? Yes. Here in the suburbs of Boston we have coyotes, deer, woodchucks, lots of birds and crazy chipmunks that keep eating my garden tomatoes while they are still green!

4. When you take selfies, do you ever make those kissy/fish faces? Noooo!
5. Do you ever see wild animals where you live? Deer and rabbits, and my apartment had a mouse infestation last winter, if that counts. Shudder.

3. Have you ever had really terrible bangs?
Never had bangs. I have curly hair, so bangs are a dicey proposition at best.

5. Do you ever see wild animals where you live?
Sure. In CA, mostly coyotes, lots of birds and lizards, occasionally a rattlesnake or tarantula. In MI, mostly deer, skunks, and squirrels. I went snorkeling in La Jolla last week and saw leopard sharks, which was awesome.

5. Do you ever see wild animals where you live? The weirdest thing I've ever seen near my house was a pair of turkey buzzards. They stared at me as I walked to my car. It gave me the creeps!
Marian D. says
Spam (as in the canned meat) was my absolute favorite side dish to go along with breakfat foods. My mother being West African and having a taste for tangy meats, served it with almost everything possible from fried spam and bread, to spam sloppy joes, to spam and coffee. Yes, we ate sloppy joes for breakfast.
For me love smells like when you’re walking down an unfamiliar road, or something Long those lines, and you get a quick whiff of some food and all of a sudden you feel like you’re at home. It’s that smell that you can’t exactly name, but you know it in your heart, and it brings you an odd sense of euphoric bliss.
Have I I ever had terrible bangs? Only once, and that was because I didn’t exactly understand how bangs worked. Basically, my entire forehead would be hidden, my tan was horrible.
When it comes to selfies, I am guilty of the kissy/duck lips. I thought they mase my cheeks more hollowed and contoured, but ehh.
I live in the city so the only wild animals I get to see are my local politicians.
Rachel R. says
1. Spam (as in the canned meat): love it or leave it? Eric Idle said that Spam should only be used for comedy purposes, and never eaten. I follow that advice religiously. My mother was a fan, and made me eat it when I was little. It was very traumatizing.

I have never even taken a selfie. I hate pictures of myself. If I did, I would not make the stupid duckface/fishlips.
5. Do you ever see wild animals where you live? I live in the suburbs of Portland, OR. Yes — squirrels, red-tailed hawks, field mice, raccoons, opossums, all kinds of birds, the occasional owl. When I lived about 25 miles further out, in the country, we got all those plus shrews, frogs, snakes, feral cats, skunks, coyotes and the occasional wolf. Some of the wetlands in the area have beaver and nutria.

2. Love smells like [FILL IN THE BLANK]. Fresh-baked bread made by my mom. That weird Denali scent by Old Spice (I can’t claim my SO has good taste in shower gels).
3. Have you ever had really terrible bangs? I definitely had the same 80s bangs that never quite looked right. Whenever it was a “special occasion” my mom insisted on curling my bangs, so I have a slew of horrible photos of them, like birthdays, first day of school, etc. So embarrassing.
4. When you take selfies, do you ever make those kissy/fish faces? No, I usually end up with more of a scowl or snarl. I’m definitely not model material!
5. Do you ever see wild animals where you live? We usually get coyotes, hawks, javelina, ground squirrels. Nothing too exciting for the most part.

Rachel P. says
1. Spam (as in the canned meat): love it or leave it? – Never tried it! I’m open to it, but I’m afraid I’ll hate it, and I hate wasting food, so I’m waiting for the fateful moment when someone offers a small bite for me to try!
2. Love smells like [FILL IN THE BLANK]. – Little babies! I love the smell of little babies and think that’s what love (in the family aspect, anyway) really smells like. For more romantic love, I’d say that kinda combo morning smell of breakfast and coffee and maybe a hint of laundry detergent in the background from folding 🙂 Just a chill-morning-together elixir.
3. Have you ever had really terrible bangs? – Honestly, no! I have had bangs I disliked (thinking my stylist cut them too short, for example) or hated styling (I now know I can never do sideswept- my hair falls straight into my eyes!), but they actually looked good on me when I took care of them.
4. When you take selfies, do you ever make those kissy/fish faces? – Not really! I’m not against it, but I also feel like that invites ridicule, and I usually aim to be a bit more original 🙂
5. Do you ever see wild animals where you live? – Yes, absolutely! Northern Michigan has many. The usual are deer, squirrels, coyotes, rabbits, chipmunks, muskrats, hawks, turkeys, bald eagles, an assortment of fowl and fish, and if you’re lucky (or unlucky, depending!), you might see wolves, mountain lions, bears, minks, pine martens, bobcats, or osprey. The first 3 are more populous in the upper peninsula, while I live just below the bridge and don’t have to worry about those so much.

4. When you take selfies, do you ever make those kissy/fish faces? I have been known to.
5. Do you ever see wild animals where you live? My husband and I were on a walk a couple of nights ago and saw an otter and a beaver! I had never seen a wild otter. Super cute! We also used to have a family of raccoons who lived behind us. There was a mother, father, and baby. The baby (who I had named Cicily) messed with my little black cat Kitty one evening and Kitty scratched him! The racoons went away after that as the parents looked angry with my cat. Kitty lives inside now…
