You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what?
Yes! I have these mischievous little baby gremlin hairs at my temples that jut out in different directions. I’ve tried imposing my will on them using heat and industrial-strength products but nothing works.I’ve given up… Now I just let them have their way.
- Have you ever had your body painted?
You know, I can’t say that I have. An opportunity has never arisen for that, but I would like to get my hands done with henna someday. My friend did it for her wedding, and I thought it looked really cool. - If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be?
Ooh, good one. I think it would have to be MJ during the Off The Wall era, circa 1979. We’d sing Rock With You while a laser light show played behind us.That would be rad.
Or I’d go with David Lee Roth, circa his mid-’80s, spandex-wearing, high-kicking era, just ’cause that would be SO weird.
- Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels?
Yes! I got one as a gift once and it’s AWESOME. It always feels like a spa day when I wear it, like I should be drinking cucumber water in a recliner and listening to Enya (even when I’m sitting on my living room floor and painting my toenails). - If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits?
Oh, don’t get me started on Tabs and the stairs! When we moved into this condo a few years ago, the carpeting was a heavily stained Golden Girls ’80s mauve, so we got it re-carpeted. Shortly thereafter, Tabs decided that the carpeted stairs would be his personal scratching posts, and so now the bottom three stairs are practically threadbare.
I’ve never been able to get him to stop, and I swear that he does it when he knows he can’t get scolded, like when I’m upstairs in bed or out of the house.
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!
1. Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what?
2. Have you ever had your body painted?
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be?
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels?
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits?
Monday, babe. Aaand we’re back. 🙂
So, interesting articles this week. Here’s one I found yesterday that I thought you might like. It’s about visualization — in this case, specifically visualizing yourself at this moment, as if you’ve already accomplished whatever you’re working on.
They use a running analogy.
“When you first begin any endeavor, if you believe yourself to be behaving like someone who has already accomplished the task would behave, you set the challenge up as a simpler task. As Cain describes it: the task won’t be like running uphill, it will still involve running (in a sense) but it will feel like a downhill jaunt. To reach that point you simply need to visualize yourself behaving in the way that your ideal self would behave.”
Very cool idea. I’m gonna actively try it this week.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

My kitties like the berber carpet, too. And my wooden 4-post bed. Thank you for not getting Tabs declawed! Some people might choose carpet over kitty, and I’m glad you didn’t. 🙂 I know this is not a place for politics, so if you don’t post this comment, I understand.
Karen says
Hi redweathertiger,
Oh, no! Your bed? Your kitties sound rambunctious. Have you ever tried those scented sprays that are supposed to discourage kitties from certain areas? I’ve been meaning to one of these days, but it would be too late for my stairs. They’re already too far gone.
RedWeatherTiger says
I haven’t tried them, but the bed is 20 years old, and I think the scratches give it character. The kitties use their scratching posts, too…sometimes, though, a girl just needs a change of scratching scene. As an aside, we lost one of our beloved cats to FIP about 2 years ago, and ever since he got sick, I just don’t get too upset at anything they do. Every day with them is a gift. 🙂
Tania says
Karen,
I like your idea about visualization. I read an article once about mantra’s when I was in high school right around the time I started doing competitive speaking. Before I was on I would go outside and find a spot nearby that was quiet. I would close my eyes and say “I have strength, wisdom and power”. It works!
1. Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what? darn baby hairs in the front. Luckily I have blunt bangs to cover them.
2. Have you ever had your body painted? No. I don’t think I would like it either.
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be? In my mind, I duet with people all of the time.
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels? OMG yes!! The first time I went to a hotel that had one I was in love. Now when I travel I take my robe.
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits? When Sasha was alive, she would scratch our ankles just because we passed her. 🙁
Karen says
Hi Tania,
That’s a great affirmation. “I have strength, wisdom and power.” I hope you don’t mind if I borrow it. 🙂
The whole concept makes total sense to me. I can see why it would work, and I think it does. I mean, if negative self talk can bring us down and whittle away our confidence, why wouldn’t positive self talk have a similar but opposite effect?
Kiss & Make-up says
1. Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what? I used to, but not anymore 🙂
2. Have you ever had your body painted? Nope.
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be? Oh my… let’s see. Maybe Taylor Swift. I just like her music so much.
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels?
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits? She’s no longer with us now, but my dog once confused the wooden dining table for a chew toy.
Rachel P. says
1. Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what? – Yeah, where my part ends back on the crown of my head. It always sticks up on the left, kind of interrupts the smooth and sleek vibe I’m trying to pull off.
2. Have you ever had your body painted? – I do a lot of face/body paint for fun in my free time, so sometimes I do it on myself, or if a friend is willing, I let them take the reins 🙂
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be? – Anthony Kiedis from Red Hot Chili Peppers, or Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root. Yep, either of those! 😀 Both alive.
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels? – Maybe once or twice- my own robe is fluffy and pink, but it’s not as luxurious as anything you’d find in a high-end spa!
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits? – OH YES, GIRL. My home is just one giant animal enclosure at this point. There probably isn’t a square foot they haven’t scratched up or urinated on at some point or another.
Ruchita says
1. Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what?
Luckily, my hair behaves itself most of the time.
2. Have you ever had your body painted?
I got henna on my hands for my Indian wedding.
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be?
Probably You Give Love a Bad Name with Bon Jovi. I didn’t have cable TV at my house when I was a kid, so I was always so excited to see the music video when I was at my friend’s house.
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels?
Yes, when I was at a spa before getting a massage. They are so comfy!
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits?
Mingy loves to chew and shred paper. Once I left a magazine on the floor that I had gotten from the library. When I came down in the morning a whole corner was torn off. I ended up having to pay for a replacement.
There is this product called Sticky Paws which is supposed to deter cats from scratching furniture. Not sure if it would work on the stairs or if Tabs would just move to another step. Also, if you’re interested in a scratching post that works for husky kitties check out the SmartCat Ultimate Scratching Post on Amazon. It’s tall and sturdy so it doesn’t get knocked down when the cat streches up to scratch.
Okay, that’s it for my Cat Lady PSA. Have a great Monday!

1. Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what?
UGH – since I got my hair chopped, cowlicks have become the bane of my existence!!! I think I have a few cowlicks on either side of the crown of my head, which can usually be tamped into submission… but the REAL cowlick offender is at my right temple and it makes my hair/bangs sproing out into the air. I can hear it sproinging as I type. SIGH. I’ve given up and decided to “claim” it as my “look.” (“this is sooo intentional, babe.”)
2. Have you ever had your body painted?
No, but I think it would be fun! Sometimes the stuff MUFE does will pop on my facebook feed, and it’s just FASCINATING. I’d love to at least be able to watch the process sometime.
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be?
Oh lawdy… John Mayer. John Mayer, hands down. That man has the voice and feel of a god.
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels?
yes!! Baaaasically the best thing ever 🙂
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits?
Well, my parents’ dog would get into the garbage every once in a while, which she TOTALLY know she wasn’t supposed to do. While she didn’t really wreak that much havoc, she would still make a mess (and your dog rifling through your garbage is – let’s admit it – not that safe). So my mom would walk into the kitchen, see the mess, and yell out the dog’s name… and the dog would s-l-o-w-l-y shuffle towards my mom’s voice with the most guilty look on her face. I have visions of her shaggy little face peeping down through the railing on the stairs, with a look that said “don’t make me come down there. I’m too guilty.” SO hard not to laugh. 🙂
Shannon says
Also – thanks for sharing the article! It’s really hitting home. I had the revelation a couple weeks ago that I still wasn’t taking music “seriously” – that I wasn’t thinking of myself as a professional in my chosen field (even though I’ve been doing music for like… forever, and we moved to NYC to pursue music here). I was telling myself that I “wanted” to be a musician, but I was still mentally thinking it wasn’t a “real” profession, or I’d kind of downplay it in conversation because I felt like it wasn’t something that *others* would take seriously. Making that mental shift to “this is what I want to do with my life, it’s my career, and I am proud of it” was HUGE, I think, for me – and I’m still working on it. I hadn’t even realized I wasn’t thinking in that negative mode before I had my lightbulb moment. So, even though I’m still “climbing” towards music as a profession, it’s something I’m claiming a lot more as who I am. It’s so important to have those healthy perspectives of oneself!!

1. Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what? I have little baby hairs at my forehead hairline that are terrible at lying down nicely.
2. Have you ever had your body painted? No, just fair-style temporary “tattoos”.
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be? I always thought it’d be awesome to sing with Dave Matthews. I love when his voice gets all gravelly.
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels? Yes, but they’re never soft enough in any of the hotels I’ve stayed in! I much prefer soft fleecy ones.
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits? Oh my old dog definitely ruined some things marking his territory.
Let says

Kylie says
1. Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what?
Ugh, so when I part my hair to the deep left, the way I like it, if I’m on second day hair, a like quarter inch piece of hair gets super greasy and separates from the rest of the hair. Sometimes this is controllable, sometimes not. Grrr.
2. Have you ever had your body painted?
Nope. Plenty of temporary tattoos throughout childhood, however!
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be?
I’d love to sing David Bowie’s part of Under Pressure with Freddie Mercury…and then Freddie Mercury’s part with David Bowie. I’d love Bruce Springsteen to sing “I’m on Fire” to me, but I’d be way too mesmerized/hot to sing along!
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels?
I went to Vegas on business, and a friend flew out to meet me once my conference was over. Wednesday and Thursday nights were enjoyed immensely, and Friday was spent entirely in a fabulous robe watching Law & Order SVU in our hotel room. It was the best day…
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits?
I had a dog growing up, but fortunately she never ruined any furniture. As a puppy, she did bite into a few Barbie dolls, however!
Ericca says
Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what? The front of my hair always flips up.
2. Have you ever had your body painted? at the beach. but it was small, I really want my hands hennaed (sp?) If someone wanted to my entire body , ok, why not.

4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels? yes.
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits? what? Ajax, my Ajax hell yes. I have a couch that is fake leather that is being shredded as we speak.

Now that you mention Karen! I have a 4 year old tuxedo girl cat, (I love her so much!) but my leather sofa, my leather chair and several t-shirts have been clawed by Mischief (that’s her name) Love doesn’t come easy or cheap.
Kate & Zena says
Hi Karen! Long time, no see! I’ve been out trying to get my life back together!
1. Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what?
Yes, I have a mean old cowlick right above my left eyebrow in my bangs. It creates all sorts of mean mischief. It makes a whole section of my bangs flip to the left!
2. Have you ever had your body painted?
Not my entire body, but I’ve had my face painted quite a few times! I usually get balloons on my cheek as I am just too antsy to get my whole face done.
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be?
Sam Smith’s “Stay with Me” has been in my head lately, so probably him, but I love Pink’s “Give me a reason” too. It’s hard to pick! I guess it would be down to voice dynamics.
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels?
Yep. My robe is terry cotton. 🙂 I LOVE IT.
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits?
Yes, Zena has. In fact, I have photos on Facebook of her disastrous deed. Three or four years ago I was drying my squirrel hair Smashbox makeup brushes on the coffee table which I kind of use as a desk. Zena must have been angry at some squirrel or another because I came up there and every last one of my Smashbox eye brushes-which were my favorite at the time-were DESTROYED. The squirrel hair was everywhere, the red lacquer was destroyed and pocked with teeth marks, ferrules were dented; it was horrible! My synthetic brushes weren’t touched at all, but all of my natural hair brushes (particularly the squirrel hair brushes)…toast.
I cried. I literally cried. Those brushes are so expensive!

2. Have you ever had your body painted? NO. But I’d love to be painted gold, like that actress in the Bond movie!
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be? HMMM…Brian Adams, Rod Stewart…
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels? YES…I love them. I put one on after my shower every day. The thicker and plusher, the better!
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits? YES – biros. I’ve had to bury many!
Leah G. says
1. Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what? I have really curly hair and how it behaves depends on the weather. 🙂
2. Have you ever had your body painted? Henna at a yoga retreat in February! It was amazing. I got a turtle on my upper arm. It lasted 2 weeks and I loved it. The ink is all natural too and not harmful. I got so many positive compliments. I would love to go to the same artist someday.
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be? Put me in the band instead (although I have not played since High School). If I could switch this to band instead of singing I’d choose Sting. 🙂
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels? I have one at my house in Maine but honestly it’s too thick and gets in the way when I try to do my hair (I also feel it pulls hair out of my head by being so ‘clingy’
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits? Our living room couch is a little shredded on the bottom but luckily Maximus has stayed away from shredding our red microfiber couch in the TV room.

1. Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what? Yes, the front of my hair is so used to me wearing it pulled back that it automatically shoots backwards when I wear it down.
2. Have you ever had your body painted? No. I can’t see anyone wanting to see that!
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be? P!nk because she’s crazy talented, sassy, and seems like a fun person to meet.
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels? Yes, but I’m just not a robe gal. I prefer stretchy pants and a t-shirt/sweater!
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits? Oh mon dieu…we had an orange tabby named PJ that borrowed into the undercarriages of many a box springs and sofa and stayed hidden for days. He seemed so normal before we adopted him!

1. Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what?
~I just got my hair cut (with a good bit of thinning) and at times my layers won’t cooperate. On one hand, long, thick, slightly wavy hair is very easy to manage… on the other, I get bored at times, want a change, and get tired of the headaches from having crazy thick hair. My new layers are a la Alessandra Ambrosio, so they are fun but manageable. I’ve learned not to go with hairstyles that have too many short layers or shorter hair in general.
2. Have you ever had your body painted?
~Can’t say I have but I’ve always wanted to Sports Illustrated-style.
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be?
~Lzzy Hale from Halestorm, and Brent Smith from Shinedown.
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels?
~I think I have once or twice.
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits?
~One of the horses I trained had a penchant for chewing on things like a puppy. Saddles weren’t safe around him. He was a 20 year old off the track Thoroughbred who thought he was a 2 year old.

1. Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what?
The hair that makes up my “bangs” NEVER works with me. It always falls flat or gets pushed back to reveal my fivehead.
2. Have you ever had your body painted?
Er, I painted my stomach for the homecoming game back in high school one time.
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be?
David Bowie. Any era David Bowie. All eras David Bowie.
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels?
Actually, I don’t think so. I wrap up in super plush blankets all the time though, so it’s kinda the same thing. Right?
5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits?
Oh my gosh, yes. My puppy has ripped down four sets of blinds, destroyed glasses and shoes and other things I know I’m forgetting about.

1. Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what?
Not really – my hair is so long now that its own weight has kind of beaten it into submission, LOL! Maybe the little downy bits around my face?
2. Have you ever had your body painted?
No, but it would be so awesome!
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be?
This is a tough one for me, actually, since I’m not really into singers, per se. If you gave me the chance to play a piano duet with Debussy, though, I wouldn’t say no…

2. Have you ever had your body painted? Just a heart or flower or unicorn on my cheek.
3. If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be? Whitney, because she would be loud enough and good enough to drown out what comes out of my mouth when I sing!
4. Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels? Yes! I have one and it’s wonderful! I’m a bathrobe girl, throwing it on makes me feel special.

Do you have a fussy cowlick, or is there another part of your hair that always misbehaves, no matter what?
Yes. I have impossible baby hairs around my face that never stay put or take hair color. I have to cover them with the rest of my hair.
Have you ever had your body painted?
Not full-body. I did miming in theatre in high school, so I not only painted myself, but my classmates as well. I applied the makeup so well that I did everyone’s. In the spirit of miming, I was silent once I applied my face paint.
If you could sing a duet with a famous singer (living or dead), whom would it be?
Amy Winehouse. I adore her soulful voice.
Have you ever worn one of those thick terry cloth bathrobes, like the kind they have in hotels?
Yes. My husband bought me a full length red one after I kept swiping his plaid Secret Window one.
If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits?
Yes! Carpet!! My Siberian Husky ruined my white carpet in our brand new house as a puppy. Then recently I bought my little black cat a carpet scratching post and encouraged it. Now he likes scratching my carpet!

5. If you have a pet, have they ever seriously destroyed/shredded the crap out of something that was deemed off limits? Several homework, research papers, and important material were shredded and bitten by my cats and dogs exactly the night before their due date… Go figure it out 😀
