You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Did you watch any World Cup matches?
So, I just found out that Germany won the World Cup yesterday… That tells you right there how closely I follow soccer (oops!).You know how I feel about sports with projectiles. Give me iceskating with the pretty, sparkly outfits any day. 🙂
- Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey or sweetums)?
At the risk of embarrassing El Hub, yes (whatever he likes it). We mostly call each other babe, which I know isn’t very creative. “Babe, where’s Tabs?” “Babe, have you seen the cat lately??” “Babe, Tabs just barfed on the carpet! Um…could you please clean it up?” - What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it?
A drugstore full-coverage under-eye concealer that works as well as MAC Pro Longwear but comes in easier-to-use packaging (like a regular plastic tube with a doe-foot or a pen like YSL Touche Éclat) that doesn’t break (no glass bottle or annoying pump). - What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)?
I like willows. The way they look and the sound of the wind rustling through their leaves. They remind me of my childhood because there was this huge willow tree in Union City where I grew up, and every time we’d drive by it I’d gaze at it wistfully and daydream about playing beneath it.
- What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it?
It’s called Ke’e Beach, and it’s literally at the end of the road — the one main highway — on the North Shore of the island of Kauai in Hawaii. The drive up there is along a winding, jungly road, and you feel like you’re going someplace magical and remote (cell phones don’t even work out there).
The beach itself is sort of a secluded hideaway with a cliff you can hike up on the left to a beautiful view of the ocean and the beach down below, and the water is shockingly blue and warm with lots of cool animals and things to see (last time I was there I chilled out on the sand next to a Hawaiian monk seal).
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!
1. Did you watch any World Cup matches?
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)?
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it?
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)?
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it?
A new day, a new start.
Hi, my friend. 🙂
I hope you had a great weekend and got your batteries recharged. I feel like I kind of did, but there’s never enough downtime, you know? Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could just spend our entire days contemplating gravity and flowers and kittens and looking for shapes in the clouds like the highly evolved citizens of some utopian society?
That would be nice…
So, what’s on your to-do list today? I’m trying something a little new with mine. I’m not sure where I got the idea (probably lifehacker or 99u, two of my favorite productivity sites), but it’s basically this: only put three things on the list.
That’s it. No matter how many tasks you actually have to do today, just put the three most important ones on your list…and basically ignore everything else, LOL!
The three most important tasks. The ones you really want to accomplish.
It’s like, if you can finish those three, you’ll probably have a great day.
The idea is that your entire to-do list, if yours is anything like mine, is ridiculously long and terrifying and overwhelming, so by just picking three tasks to work on each day, you’re removing a lot of the noise.
We’ll see… I definitely like the sound of the idea.
Good luck in your to-do list vanquishing efforts. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Carolyn @ The Makeup Writeup says
Hi Karen!
1. Did you watch any World Cup matches?
Yes! I love watching most sports so I was following the tournament from start to finish. I was really happy that Germany won since they were one of the teams I was rooting for from the very beginning!
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)?
Haha, definitely — we have so many pet names but for the risk of embarrassing myself, I won’t reveal them here! 🙂
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it?
Something that would keep one’s makeup looking 100% as fresh late at night as it looks freshly applied in the morning. My oily skin can’t withstand all the primers, makeup finishing sprays, and mattifiers out there, unfortunately :(.
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)?
Redwoods!
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it?
Oh my goodness, Karen, I was so excited when I saw that your favorite beach is Ke’e beach! I love Kauai so much that my hubby and I got married on the island last year. I would say my favorite beaches are Ke’e beach (absolutely gorgeous sunset views of the Napali Coast) and the nearby Tunnels Beach (which is rather secluded at times, which makes it even easier to appreciate its beauty!).
Let says
1. Did you watch any World Cup matches? Yes, a lot of them. I watched several (full-time) group stage matches and pretty much all of the knockout round matches. I was nervous watching yesterday’s final, but in the end felt so happy for Germany.
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)? Don’t have any S.O. If I had one, I would probably refrain him from doing so though.
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it? Foundation with SPF that doesn’t have Titanium dioxide as its ingredient.
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)? Maple. If I have to choose from the 4 options, probably oak.
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it? Perasi/White Sand Beach in Bali. The views are just gorgeous and the “air” there is calmer than most other beaches in Bali because there were fewer tourists compared to other beaches in Bali (at least the last time I went there, which is ~3 years ago).
kristen @ glambunctious says
1. Did you watch any World Cup matches? I saw bits and pieces when I was out n’ about. I knew Germany won and I was happy for my German friends on Instagram!
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)? Sure to the nick names, but they’re usually made up on the fly so they change all the time. My favorite one is Plum-kin (for plum/pumpkin). He once called me Catfish Jones, which I also thought was hilairs, lol.
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it? Mascara that actually looked like the lashes in mascara ads, even for those of us with a sparse/short fringe.
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)? PALM TREES, live oaks draped with Spanish moss, maples in the fall, and cherry blossoms in the spring.
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it?
For chillin’: Anywhere along Florida’s Emerald Coast. White sugar sand, emerald water, calm ocean (Gulf).
For watching surfers: Playa Domes, Rincon, Puerto Rico. So incredible to watch.
Shannon says
1. Did you watch any World Cup matches?
Yes! Not as many as I would’ve liked… but I saw a couple, and caught the last half of the final. I don’t really follow specific teams, but I LURV watching me some soccer 🙂 I was ALL ABOUT team America when they were in the running!
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)?
um. …yeah. “wonderful” or “handsome/beautiful” – “hey wonderful, how was your day?” etc. And we have our own special brand of baby talk that’s more like… adorable 3-year old. These things are probably all my fault 🙂 haha!
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it?
Hmmm… painless at-home hair removal? 🙂
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)?
man, I just love trees in general! I have a special place in my heart for maples, since there’s one in my parents’ front yard. But I also *adore* willows. (crap, do I really have to pick just one? I’m also a fan of Japanese maple, birch, and cedar…)
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it?
Probably Owen Beach, in Tacoma WA, at Point Defiance. It’s a rocky PNW beach and often cold, but it’s home! 🙂 And that’s why I like it.
Ruchita says
1. Did you watch any World Cup matches?
Nope, I’m not much of a sports fan.
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)?
Not really. However, I have various nicknames for the cats. 🙂
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it?
A foundation that could adapt to perfectly match skin tone and texture with enough coverage to hide problem areas and yet still look natural.
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)?
I love maple trees and seeing the colors change in the fall.
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it?
I love Hanalei Bay in Kauai, but pretty much any beach in Hawaii is amazing.
I hear ya about not having enough downtime on the weekends. It seems like at least one day is spent doing chores, grocery shopping, etc. But I did spend some time outside with Mingy. I let him hang out in the yard without a harness and he had fun chasing birds. 🙂
Happy Monday!
Izzie says
1. Did you watch any World Cup matches?
Haha, I didn’t even find out who won until yesterday like you! I do like sports though, soccer just isn’t one of them.
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)?
Oh my goodness, yes. He has a habit of calling me “bae” ever since the “bae caught me sleeping” meme made it’s rounds on the internet. I call him everything under the sun, but mostly “babe” and “boobie.”
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it?
Good question. I wouldn’t be opposed to a machine that applied a full face of makeup for you a la Fifth Element or Meet the Hollowheads.
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)?
Pecan, reminds me of home. My grandma has one in her backyard and I remember running out to collect the fallen pecans as a kid.
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it?
Moonlight Circle Beach on South Padre Island in Texas. My friends and I would drive 4 hours down to that beach almost every year in high school, so it’s full of a lot of good memories. It has been YEARS since we’ve been back (need to schedule a reunion ASAP!)
Kylie says
1. Did you watch any World Cup matches? Sure did– a few at work with a coworker that was super into it and then a bunch at home. I think it’s really exciting when countries can get together like this– why I LOVE the Olympics!
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)? No baby talk– some pet names, but none that’ll be revealed publicly!
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it? For me, I would love a primer than would totally neutralize redness. I’m super pale and get red patches on my cheeks when I get out of the shower or during the day when my make-up wears off. The Stila 1-step primer is the best I’ve used so far, but it’s not as perfect as I’d like.
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)?
Cherry blossom trees. Love the pink blooms!
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it?
The nicest beach I’ve ever been to is probably in Naples, Fl. I don’t remember the name of the particular beach, but the way it worked was you had to park far away and then drivers in golf carts would take you to the actual beach. The golf cart route was BEAUTIFUL and like a mini nature expedition– you’d see gators, turtles, beautiful birds and more. And the actual beach was warm and beautiful. Dolphins would be playing in the surf in the early morning hours. HEAVENLY! I grew up in NY and my childhood beach days were spend in Long Island or on the CT shore, so those will always have a special place in my heart. However, my FAVORITE beach is definitely Narragansett, RI. That’s where I went to college and I have the fondest memories of running along the shore or just chilling and reflecting by the water. LOVE IT!!

2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)? Not very imaginative either, we use “cari” short for “cariño” (Spanish for beloved)
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it? no pain hair removal… that would be something!
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)?
orange trees, I love orange blossoms!
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it? La Concha in San Sebastian (Norther Spain). The beach itself is beautiful and it’s surronded by a gorgeus city

Happy Monday! So, my best bit of news is that I’m the proud owner of Malice. I felt vastly more sophisticated when I wore it for the first time on Saturday, until one of the boys sheepishly said, “I think you look the same?” HAHA! At least I FELT fancier. 🙂
1. Did you watch any World Cup matches? Very little; I think I caught bits of 2 or 3 games.
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)? No, I save that for the cats. 🙂
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it? I’m totally waiting on that Fifth Element eye makeup machine!
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)? I love sugar maples (with the bright red leaves in the fall) and cherry or crab apple in the spring (for their pink flowers and beautiful smell).
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it? I’m not much of a beach expert so I think I’ll go with Ogunquit in ME because it’s nice to walk along the Marginal Way and then do a little boogie boarding. I’m hoping to find a new, warmer favorite if I ever make it to Hawaii. 🙂
The LA Lady says
1. Did not watch the World Cup matches. Kind of over it.
2. When it comes to pet names, we have a rule: no food, no animals. So “sweetie” and “babe” are OK, but not “honey” or “pumpkin” or anything like that. Baby talk is 100% banned in public (there have been studies that show it makes people around you REALLY uncomfortable) and only very rarely happens in private, and it’s usually in an ironic or sarcastic way.
3. I agree with others: no-pain permanent hair removal. I had laser treatments and they didn’t do much except slow hair growth. I also have dreams about that makeup box from The Fifth Element. How awesome would it be to have full eye makeup done in like three seconds?!
4. Favorite tree: Cyprus
5. Favorite beach: Cannon Beach in Oregon.
My to-do list today is finalizing my plans for Paris! I leave in a month. I got back from Peru a couple of weeks ago and although it was amazing, I’m really looking forward to lounging in cafés, doing some good people-watching, and eating lots of food.
As a sidenote, Dr. Jart’s Premium BB cream with SPF 45 totally saved my skin in Peru. I was anywhere between 8,000-17,000 feet and didn’t get burnt at all. I’ll admit it seems appropriate only for light/fair skin but maybe they’ll come out with other colors?
Icequeen81 says

Stephanie Smith says
1. Did you watch any World Cup matches? Not whole matches, I watched a few minutes of a lot of matches. Short shorts on men = YES PLEASE!!!
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)? Yes, I call the husband “Smiffy” and he calls me “Stinky.” I know they’re odd, but we’ve been married almost 18 years, we know what works! Lol!
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it? Making the beauty industry be honest with advertising!
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)? Oak! They’re so big and powerful. Also, Flowering Plum with their purpley red leaves and pink blossoms in the spring.
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it? I don’t go to a lot of beaches, central California beaches mostly, and they they aren’t very warm.
Trude says

5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it? The one just outside my dad’s hometown in Norway. It’s one of the few sandy beaches in the whole country, and the view with the fjords in the background is unbelievable.

#5 Manini O’Wali beach on the Big Island. It’s something you have to drive off the main highway to find but it’s not entirely a secret. Not a lot of folks know about it though, somehow, unless they’re local or have been there.
Jen. says
1. Did you watch any World Cup matches? Nope! I probably would’ve just because, but I don’t have any tv channels to watch them on.
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)? My liege! Ha! We don’t call each other nicknames, but each of our dogs has like, 100 pet names so that’s probably enough baby talk for us.
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it? A fake eyelash applying machine.
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)? Hmm. I mostly know desert trees– mesquite, palo verde, ironwood, etc, but they’re nothing super exciting to me. I like pretty much any tree that’s green and leafy because it’s so different than what I’m used to! I loved seeing the sequoias in California though. Those are some amazing trees.
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it? I don’t have a favorite beach! Alas, I don’t have a lot of beach access in my day to day life.
Leah G. says
1. Did you watch any World Cup matches? I watched the US/Germany one while I was getting my oil changed. My town has a HUGE Brazilian population so anytime Brazil played it was bonkers (in a good way!)
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)? We sure do. But not in front of other people.
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it? An easy way to donate products from the “product graveyard” that just did not work for me (everyone with curly hair has a bunch of products that they’ve tried). 🙂
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)?
Sugar Maple. Living in New England there’s somethings special about maple sugar season. In summer we even go to a sugar shack and get their homemade maple ice cream (yumm!)
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it? I can’t pick just one but I love the beaches North of Boston. People are either “Cape Cod People” or North Shore people. I’d rather go north. Salisbury Beach, Singing Beach, Good Harbor Beach…love them all!
Betsy says
Love the idea of only three things on my to-do list! I usually have about ten things but only get about three or four done. This way I would feel like I had really accomplished something at the end of the day. I’m going to give it a try – thank you, Karen!

Bleack! Football should be played by Southern college boys and there should be wings and beer involved.
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)?

3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it?

4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)?
Pine. The tree of my homeland. (North Florida)
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it?
St. George Island, FL. It’s beautiful, the state park is clean and has nice bathrooms, and it’s only 1.25 hrs from my house.
Sylirael says
1. Did you watch any World Cup matches?
Nope. I generally can’t stand watching team sports, actually, especially ones that involve a ball of some sort. I’m TOTALLY with you on the ice skating! Having said that, one of my other favourite events to watch when the winter Olympics is on is the Biathlon. Like, I’ll watch the WHOLE THING. Why? Even I’m not sure… 😀 I just love it!
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)?
You know, we don’t really call each other anything! Using each others’ names seems somehow too formal, so we just…talk to each other without using any names, LOL!
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it?
Actually, it’s an anti-invention. If they got rid of Photoshop, then advertising would (ideally) actually have to show exactly what a product *can* do, as opposed to what you can *make* it do with digital magic, heh! It might also, you know, help combat some of those unrealistic demands/expectations that are put on (especially) women for ‘beauty perfection’. I know you can do a lot with lighting etc, but at least it might help to combat some of the more egregious stuff (like that recent MAC CC Prep+Prime launch poster).
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)?
The ones we have in Albert Park that look like something out of a Tim Burton film… I’m not sure what type of tree they are though, sadly! Otherwise, Pohutukawa 🙂
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it?
Hm. I’m not really a beach person, but I did like that little one we hiked 5 hours over a mountain for in the Canary Islands…
Sara says
1. Yes I do! I’m a huge huge fan of Germany, since a few World Cups ago and am so glad that they won! 🙂
2. I would say that (embarrassingly), we do or rather used to back when we were dating. Not so much now that we are married with a kid. I guess we just end up baby talking to her!
3. A way to remove blemishes and pigmentation (age or sun damage) instantly and effectively! Bam!
4. I actually never thought about this…. haha
5. In Singapore, I really like Palawan Beach and Siloso Beach but not that much these days as they are getting more littered and dirty, compared to what they were during my schooling and tanning days. Pity!
Rachel P. says
1. Did you watch any World Cup matches? – Yes, USA vs. Portugal. I like playing soccer more than watching it.
2. Do you and your significant other ever talk baby talk or have pet names for each other (honey, sweetums, my liege)? – I’m single but I do go for terms of affection. My ex and I used to call each other “Little Bear”, and while the relationship ended, the good memories are still there.
3. What’s one invention that would revolutionize the beauty industry as we know it? – I don’t know how it would be done, but a fast, one-coater mascara that gives you ba-BAM lashes without needing falsies, glue, curlers, or a million coats. Something tells me the lash world is gonna come up with something big- I just don’t know what it is!
4. What’s your favorite kind of tree (oak, willow, ash, spruce)? – I like sugar maple trees, because they make yummy maple syrup and are also easy to climb 🙂 Also, they turn pretty colors in fall!
5. What’s your favorite beach, and why do you like it? – Probably Petoskey State Park in Northern Michigan. I go there a lot! It’s sandy a long ways out, fresh water, just beautiful. If only it were a bit warmer at times, then nothing could top it!
