You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- How’s it going this morning?
Pretty good, but I’m still kinda sleepy, to be honest. Needless to say, it’s been slow going this morning!I’ve been running fine on about six hours of sleep a night for the past couple weeks, but I think I finally hit the wall. I need one of those 10-hours-of-sleep nights to catch up.
Meanwhile, could someone please pass the coffee? Or I might need a mid-morning nap, zzzz…
- OK, it’s tip sharing time! Let’s share the wealth of our collective beauty knowledge. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
Hmm… Well, for skin, the whole water thing. Drink copious amounts.Like TONS! Whenever my skin starts acting cray or when my lips get so dry that they’re painful, chances are I haven’t been drinking enough water.
I usually drink obscene amounts of it. I’m that annoying person in the group who always needs to find a loo, LOL! But I am absolutely convinced that drinking enough water helps my skin.
- It’s OK if you don’t ______.
It’s OK if you don’t know what you want to be when you grow up.I’m serious!
Now, if you’re one of those people who always knew what you wanted to in your life, congrat-poo-lations. 🙂 You’re very lucky.
For the rest of us who have no clue, that’s OK. Plans will always change anyway, and things still work out.
- Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes?
Oh, hell no! I can apply full and half strip lashes reasonably well now, but those little bundles are rough.Maybe I should make getting better at that my summer makeup project.
- What was the last TV show you marathoned?
Game of Thrones! And I’m still going through GoT withdrawals.I’m not ready to say goodbye to Westeros yet, but I’m all caught up.
I tried binging on the second season of Orange is the New Black last weekend, but it’s just not the same.
I mean, where are my dragons??
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!
1. How’s it going this morning?
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______.
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes?
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned?
Good morning, cutie pie. 🙂
Yup, it’s Monday.
I always like to start the week implementing some tip or technique to help things go smoothly, and this week that something will be walks.
This week, I’m going to be all about taking breaks to go walk.
Do you ever take little 5- or 10-minute walks during the day? You should try it sometime. I know it’s cliche, but it’s like the water thing with skin care. It really helps.
I find that when I do it consistently — usually one short walk in the morning around 10:30 and another one in the afternoon around 3 — I feel much better overall. Much less stressed out.
It helps to just get away from your workspace, move around and get some fresh air for a while.
I always bring my phone or a camera with me, too. That way I can snap some pics if I happen upon anything cool (like neighborhood cats).
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Karen says
Re: #5, me too, Jen! I’m hooked on marathoning everything!
I also like your #3. It’s OK if people don’t like the same things. It doesn’t mean we’re/they’re terrible. Just means we’re different. 🙂
kellie says
1. How’s it going this morning?
Pretty good, considering it’s Monday! I already got my morning walk in and got an iced caramel machiatto. YUMMERS. Speaking of short walks Karen, I am all about them lately. I hurt my back about 5 weeks ago and my PT tells me it is from too much sitting, which I have to do for my job. So now, I have a pedometer, which I used every day, and take at least two small walks during the day. The pedometer keeps me motivated, no joke! Gotta get those steps!
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
A combination of salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide for clear skin. I always use both on my chin and I have not had hormonal breakouts since I started. I prefer Paula’s Choice products because they are gentle, while still having that medication in them.
3. It’s OK if you don’t have an answer for everything in life. Sometimes, things just can’t be explained and maybe that’s for the best.
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes?
No!!! I can hardley apply eye liner, false lashes are out of the question. I tried once and I could not get them close enough to my own lashes. Plus, the glue kinda freaks me out. What if that ish got in my eyes! Ouch.
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned?
“Peep Show” on netflix. It is a British comedy that came out a while back. It is hilarious, that really great dry British humor. My husband and I ended up watching it over like three times. You should check it out. It’s about two mismatched room mates and all of their misadventures. Too funny.
Happy Monday Karen and Tabs!
Shannon says
1. How’s it going this morning?
blef. I need a little more sleep! This weekend was a busy one, and Monday isn’t feeling too friendly. But I have something to look forward to: both this week and next week are 4-day workweeks for me! So I’m trying to psych myself up on that fact 🙂 (It’s kiiiinda working…)
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
oil. oil oil oil. I use avocado oil as a skin cleanser & moisturizer. SO AWESOME. Jojoba is another favorite for oil cleansing – I feel like it breaks up blackheads and dead skin a bit better than other oils I’ve used.
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______.
get it right the first time. And it’s okay to try again. (really.)
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes?
I haven’t even ATTEMPTED this. 🙂 haha. I want to try it sometime!
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned?
I’ve gotten through an awful lot of Orange Is The New Black. Still have a few episodes to go!

2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
For hair: Dry it with a T-Shirt. WAY less frizz.

Never tried!
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned?

1. How’s it going this morning?

2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
Like you, drink all of the water. I have always been good at drinking water, but recently I cut out even diet sodas, and upped my water intake a notch. The transition was a little rough but now I’m over that and everything is amazing. Don’t forget to drink extra if it is hot or you’re drinking alcohol!

2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips? – I would say… focus on acne prevention so you don’t have to deal with acne treatment!
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______. – banter easily. I’ve spent most of my life gabbing and throwing out a quick comeback, but now I admire listeners/observers the most and am trying to become a better one myself.
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes? – Never tried! I like the idea of those but kind of shudder to think of them falling off and sticking to my cheeks or getting in my sink/carpet.
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned? – The Walking Dead, eeeeasily. I am totally hooked on it and am dying for the next season! Up next in my marathon life… the Mindy Project!

Kwmechelle says
1. Well, let’s just say that I hope tomorrow is better. 🙂 I’m a camp counselor this week & today was hard. I wasn’t expecting it so today taught me how to prepare for tomorrow (hopefully)..
2. At the moment, I’m really enjoying the oil cleansing method. Castor oil & coconut oil (organic/extra virgin version) are what I use at the moment. I’m hoping it helps to keep my skin youthful with very few wrinkles. African Black soap is another face cleanser staple. Completely keeps my skin clear.
3. It’s ok if you make a mistake. I’m such a perfectionist & can act as if to error is not human. But it is. For me & for everyone else. And it’s ok.
4. I wish! I’d probably enjoy those more than the lash strips bc they’d look more natural. Thinking of trying to teach myself how to apply these 🙂
5. Iyanla Fix My Life. I saw the episode with Terrell Owens & was moved to tears. I enjoy her approach & minor bits of her philosophy. I enjoy when people make the effort to better themselves, confront any skeletons/difficult life issues, and come out on the other side.
fancie says
1. How’s it going this morning?
My morning was pretty relaxing actually 🙂
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?

3. It’s OK if you don’t ______.
Always have a plan. Being spontaneous is good sometimes!
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes?

Natasha says
1. How’s it going this morning?
Not bad… considering I have a heel spur and it hurts… but I’ve been super productive which is always a good thing.
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen…. Not only does it keep those wrinkles at bay, it prevents skin cancer. I just found out I have 2 moles of interest (possible pre-cancer)… without daily sunscreen, I’d probably have a lot more…

4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes?
Are you kidding me?! NO!
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned?

Have a great week!
Stephanie says
1. How’s it going this morning? Too busy, Monday’s usually are but I’m over it. Everyone needs to relax and stop being so cranky.
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips? Everyone else pretty much covered them all. The only thing I can add is I over moisturize when I’m going on a long flight. I usually use something over the top like a tiny little bit of Aquafor around my eyes. By the time I land it’s gone but my skin isn’t ready to crack.
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______. Clean the house every week.
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes? I have never even tried false eyelashes.

Tricia says
1. How’s it going this morning?
Restless sleep again, so, morning was rough.
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
Definitely sunscreen on the face if you wear sunglasses. I’m totally inconsistent about it and as a result I’ve got a tan face and these 2 white spots on either side of my nose where the nose pads from my sunglasses sit. Super hot.
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______.
…spell my name correctly. Nobody does. I say, “It’s just Patricia minus the “P-A” and they look at me like I’ve just asked them to do calculus. So, Tricia…Trisha…potato…potaaato.
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes?
Never tried, likely never will. I’m a perfectionist. I’d drive myself mad, get glue on my contact, SOMETHING. I just don’t even want to go there.
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned?
Breaking Bad. Still not done yet!
Sarah says
I absolutely love Monday Polls – they cheer me up every week so much. This one was pure perfection! I need to drink more water for sure! And actually have been going for walks at lunch the past couple months and just loving what its doing for my energy levels! My favorite favorite answer though was that of not knowing what I want to be when I grow up. I struggle with not knowing all the time, and deal with some anxiety around that. It is always so great to find that support and compassion that it will all work out.
Also never made it to the Chanel counter this weekend…fingers crossed this week! How about you? Any fun shopping happened on Friday?
Karen says
I did! I picked up a blush called Malice AND I managed to hunt down New Moon, so YAY! What did you do this weekend? Anything beauty related?
Sarah says
Yay indeed! That’s so exciting. I did do some filming for my channel, but other than that not much beauty related. My sister just came home for the summer, and I have just really been enjoying hanging out with her.
Kate & Zena says
Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. Long time, no type. I was way too busy with doctor appointments, funeral plans, et cetera.
1. How’s it going this morning?
I am way tired. I’m still recovering from being around 90+ people on Saturday. My granny was one loved lady.
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
Use the right products for your skin. You would be surprised how the wrong products can make your skin look crappy or make your skin drier or oilier! The right products can balance out your skin!
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______.
Get dressed occasionally! Call in a pajama day!
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes?
Not really.
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned?
Too Cute. I really needed something cute and fluffy after my grams died. Thankfully, I had lots of episodes of Too Cute on the DVR.
Karen says
Sorry for your loss, Kate. Are you ok?
Kate & Zena says
I’ve been doing okay. I have really really bad days but I have good days too. I started therapy a week after she died (that’s just how it turned out; I actually missed my first appointment the week before accidentally) to help go through the motions of grief. Unlike a lot of autistics, I understand the concept of grief and I understand what it is but like every autistic, I don’t understand the process of emotions. It’s easier when I go to therapy and talk about it.
Karen says
I think therapy can be a great tool. I’ve done individual sessions and group (for cognitive behavioral therapy) and found both every helpful and insightful. I hope that you have more good days than bad in the future, and again, I’m very sorry for the loss of your gran. Be extra gentle with yourself, ok?
Kate & Zena says
I did group therapy when I was younger for self-esteem problems during school in my elementary and middle school years. Otherwise, all of my outside psychological therapy has been individual and I generally hated it because I hated how the therapists treated me or the therapy style. I had one really good therapist when I was little because he did lots of role play, games and did lots of expression through art and if he weren’t a childhood therapist, I would have hunted him down again (heck, I probably would have hunted him down and begged him to take me.)
The one I have now is actually my mom’s therapist, so he has some history on me and he’s been in the business long enough (31 years) to understand what works. He also understands that in order to treat me he has to treat me as someone who has Autism and not as someone who doesn’t (which has been a problem.) He nearly didn’t take me because he works with my mom (conflict of interest.) It’s really because I asked for him by name that I was taken; I don’t ever ask for anyone by name!
Maria says
1. How’s it going this morning? A little hectic. I stay on my computer too long then I have to hurry and get ready for work.
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips? Since my hair is curly and frizzy, after washing I use Aragon oil, 10 spray, and blow dry lotion. I know it seems like a lot, but it works for my hair type. I then blow dry and flat iron and am good to go!
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______. Like my music
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes? Never tried, but probably not.
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned? One of the real housewives shows, I’m sure.
Trude says
1. How’s it going this morning? I’ve had better days. Woke up with a migraine and nausea, but glad I toughed it out at work. Thank Thor for modern medicine!
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips? Zero in on what’s most important to you (clear skin, shiny hair, etc.) and invest in the products/services that help you get there. You can go budget on everything else and still feel great. 🙂
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______. Go out every night. We work hard to make our home enjoyable and cozy, and we love being there. We’re both over 30 and love nothing more than to avoid the crowds and enjoy our own company and our friends’ too. I have some friends who think we’re crazy staying in, but I refuse to feel bad about it! We like to go out, just not 7 days a week. 🙂
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes? Not at all. Maybe with practice?
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned? Supernatural. So fun, especially once you get past season 1!
Grace says
1. How’s it going this morning?
It’s evening for me, but my day went well 🙂
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
ALWAYS remove your makeup at night! After that, definitely use a facewash to cleanse away any other dirt, oil, or makeup that the remover didn’t catch.
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______.
Apply winged liner perfectly.
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes?
HAHAHAH noooo
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned?
Orange Is The New Black 😀
kristen @ glambunctious says
1. How’s it going this morning? Well, the morning was so-so. Had a doc’s appointment, which I never feel are incredibly fun!
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips? Applying your under-eye concealer with your fingers warms the product making it easier to blend and appear more natural. Also, that whole thing you mentioned (eons ago but I just found it yesterday after your vanity essentials post) about blending concealer with essential oils? Mind blown. I have a bottle of rms beauty oil on my vanity to try that method tomorrow!
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______. like coffee. Just don’t try to convince me to give it up!
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes? I’ve never tried, but now I want to!
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned? OITNB! I threw my pie for you! Very enjoyable. I love Crazy Eyes.
Karen says
Good luck with your concealer and essential oil experiment! Let me know how it goes. 🙂
kristen @ glambunctious says
Said with a Russian accent: You are genius!
I’m reporting back on the oil with concealer trick to say it is AWESOME! I absolutely love it. I went to use concealer the other day without oil and it felt…wrong! Hardly any glide and no moisture! You have changed my under eye concealer life, K-$! Thank you!
Katherine M says
I agree with you so much that as far as career and life goes, we are always learning and always figuring out exactly how to be our best – even if we do seem to have it “all figured out.”
1. How’s it going this morning?
~I was tired this morning, I also haven’t been sleeping well. I made my own coffee with almond/coconut milk and honey, and it’s something I look forward to in the mornings. I find when I have a good morning routine I don’t dread them so much (since I do love sleeping when I get that golden opportunity).
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
~I have a few: eliminating most of dairy products (except occasional ice cream) and switching to almond/coconut milk really really made a huge difference with my skin. I now no longer have monster breakouts (in part due to switching to Mirena for birth control/medical purposes). On the coconuts, coconut oil is wonderful for hair and much cheaper than fancy salon or store oils. I use it as a mask, and to tame frizzies. I think it works so well because it has zero artificial ingredients in it. That said, I still love some fancy stuff…I just don’t buy as much of it anymore. For makeup, I have noticed a difference in my skin using a combo of CC cream and Bare Minerals. A good blending brush also makes the difference between harsh, unblended lines that scream “I attempted to put makeup on this morning” and beautiful natural “hey is she wearing makeup?” makeup. I’ve got lots of good tips I’ve learned over the years that I wish my younger self had known when I look at some old pics….
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______.
~Have it all “together” career wise. Bumps in the road make you stronger, and as long as you have a good job that makes you happy (and makes it a little easier to go for your goals, like if you wanted to continue education or embark on long, many-step application processes), that’s all that matters. For me, it’s not that I don’t know what I want to do – it’s just getting there. I must be like Godzilla for all the bumps in the road I’ve bounced over so far!
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes?
~I have never applied false eyelashes so I can’t say whether I’d be good at it. So far I’ve been lucky to have long, thick lashes that only need a couple of coats of good mascara to behave.
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned?
~Lately I’ve been watching a lot of old CSI: Miami seasons, and re-watching Rookie Blue as we are into Season 5 now. I am in the midst of reading Game of Thrones, so I haven’t totally caught up on the show yet.
Karen says
Hi friend,
Been a while since I checked in on you with your chance in career. Is everything going ok?
Oh, and beauty related — switching to almond milk made a huge difference in my skin too. Have you ever tried almond yogurt? It’s actually really good!
Sylirael says
1. How’s it going this morning?
Not too bad – fairly quiet now while I’m working one job, but when I have to get on to writing later it’s gonna feel a lot less peaceful…
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
At the risk of sounding trite: drink as much water as you can and avoid coffee, soda and alcohol. Not all the time, obviously 😉
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______.
Do what everyone else seems to be doing. Live your own life the way you want to!
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes?
I’ve never tried!
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned?
I don’t watch TV, but the last YouTube Series I marathoned was Gronkh’s Banished, while I was marking 😀
Karen says
I love your answer to number 3, Sylirael. That’s good life advice. 🙂
Jewels says
1. How’s it going this morning?
Could be better – I slept badly because I happened to catch a very unpleasant movie on television last night and had nightmares (the movie had a very traumatic scene with a cat, and that is all I shall say).
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
Wear what makes YOU feel good.
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______.
Act your age. 😉
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes?
Nope! Well, I rarely wear makeup anyways, but when I do, I usually focus on my lips, as I wear glasses.
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned?
It was a combination of “The Big Bang Theory”, “CSI: Miami”, “Grimm”, and “The Simpsons”. I was away from home recently, and my mother doesn’t have the internet speed/bandwidth necessary to watch the episodes online.
Stephanie Smith says
1. How’s it going this morning? Great! Summer vacation is in full effect with the kids, I have enough coffee to last me, it’s great!
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips? Wash your face with products made for sensitive skin, even if you don’t have sensitive skin. Products made for dry skin are too heavy, and products made for oily skin are too drying. Go with sensitive and be consistent!
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______. Want it get all dolled up all the time. Sometimes a little BB cream and lip balm are perfect!
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes? No! Well, I don’t know for sure. I’ve never worn fake lashes. Ever.
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned? The Newsroom. I follow Olivia Munn on Twitter, because she’s amazing, and I started the second season. I didn’t understand it, so I watched the first season On Demand, for three days. I’m obsessed!
Icequeen81 says
1. How’s it going this morning?
Fine, cuddles for a few minute then. Go and help the pets. Like I told you once , having a rooster and pups in the same place is not easy to stay sleeping 🙂
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
Honey for the face works splendid
3. It’s OK if you don’t go with the flow , not because other think is fun , means is right and polite, we need to think on others their feelings also
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes? Naaah to coward to come near my eyes that way,
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned? I don’t know if you know anime ? well I marahtoned an anime we are watching at the moment
jess says

1. How’s it going this morning?
I’m doing okay! I’m just waiting for the side effects of my treatment to wear off.
2. What’s one of your all-time best beauty, skin or hair care tips?
Hahahahaha, tips? Oh, don’t use Biore Pore Strips when you’re a teenager. That’s my biggest beauty regret – I had distended pores overnight where I used to have none. I now have the same size pores as my Mother who is in her forties, where my skin was almost poreless.
3. It’s OK if you don’t ______.
Do the things you’ve planned to do! The truth is, life is full of change and often things don’t go to plan. I think life is half learning to go with the flow and dealing with getting things you may not necessarily want, but are still necessary.
4. Are you adept at applying those individual little bundled false lashes?
Uh, no. Honestly? I’m not good at applying false lashes in general! I’ve never really been one for falsies, but I’d love a theatrical, dramatic Shu Uemura pair.
5. What was the last TV show you marathoned?
I honestly don’t think I’ve… maybe Hey Arnold?
