You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past six years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Have you ever been on TV?
Nope. Well…maybe. There’s a slim chance I might have been caught on camera during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade of 2003 because I was in New York watching the parade from the sidewalk that day. - What’s the scariest thing that’s ever happened while you were home alone?
Not exactly alone, but one night when I was in high school I was babysitting my brother while our parents were out. We were watching TV in the living room when I thought I saw a shadowy figure in the backyard.Adrenaline shot through me! Seriously, I was ready to grab my brother and bolt out the front door in bare feet and pajamas.
Turns out what I thought was someone’s head peeking through the windows was actually a plastic grocery bag caught in a clothesline, but whatevs. 🙂
- Did you decorate your house for the holidays (lights, etc.)?
We have a real tree and decorated it with twinkling white lights and ornaments, and we also did a little corner in the kitchen with some lights. Sometimes we also string lights outside around the garage, but not this year. Bah! Humbug! - Have you ever gone caroling?
I haven’t, but it looks like so much fun in the movies! - Did you watch any Christmas specials on TV this year?
I caught the last part of The Sound of Music Live! special with Carrie Underwood and Vampire Bill. Let’s just say that Tabs was not overly impressed… Of course, he’s a tough critic, but the movie is a pretty tough act to follow. - Have you been playing any good games on your phone lately?
Bejeweled Blitz. I play it so much that El Hub’s memorized the theme song…even though he has a terrible memory and he’s never played the game himself, LOL! - Strangest gift you’ve ever given or received?
Someone in elementary school — I can’t remember who it was now — gave me a pink toy Barbie motorcycle, and I was totally offended at the time because I didn’t play with Barbie (I was more a connoisseur of teddy bears).I couldn’t comprehend why, of all the forms of transportation, Barbie would choose to ride a motorcycle because, I mean, her hair would get totally messed up from her helmet and the wind… It was just so WEIRD to me.
- Are there any outdated phrases you still like using?
Um, all of them?? I’m particularly fond of “It’s the bomb!” and “Raise the roof!” And I will say “That’s HELLA bad!” (with “bad” meaning “good”) to someone if I know they’re an old-school East Bay-er. - Have you ever gone camping in the snow?
Well that pretty much describes my nightmare. 🙂 - Favorite past or present makeup trend or fad?
Cat eye liner! I hope it never goes out of style.
Now it’s your turn. Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em! 🙂
1. Have you ever been on TV?
2. What’s the scariest thing that’s happened while you were home alone?

It’s almost here! Merry Christmas Eve, Eve. 🙂
Whatcha up to today? I’m not feeling extra productive this morning, but I do want to prep a couple of reviews before tomorrow and finish something else I’ve been working on (a top secret project!).
El Hub and I went down to the mall last night, and it was actually kind of fun. Crowded, for sure, but it was so Christmassy, with the stores all decorated, and you just can’t beat this time of year for sales. I mean, when during the regular year do you see sales like 50% off everything in the store??
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Stephanie Smith says
1. Have you ever been on TV? No, but I’ve put my kids on for their birthdays, and I’ve taped my artist friend on TV a couple of times.
2. What’s the scariest thing that’s happened while you were home alone? OMG! This is a good one. About five years ago, the husband was at work, and the kids (aged 3 and 6 at the time) were asleep. I was in my kitchen when I heard my garage door open. Scared the you know what out of me! I called 911, and it turned out that it was a Police Man, looking for an escaped criminal. My neighbors had told the police that I was alone and that I kept my garage door closed but not locked. So the Police decided to check my garage, which was fine, but still scared the stuffing out of me. It’s a funny story now.
3. Did you decorate your house for the holidays? YES! Two Christmas trees, plus knick knacks all over because that’s how we roll, an Elf on the Shelf, white lights around the outside of our house, and a spinning lit up Christmas tree in our front yard. It’s festive here!
4. Have you ever gone caroling? Yes! And we got hot chocolate and tamales, which was faaaaaabulous!
5. Did you watch any Christmas specials on TV this year? All of the classics, Rudolph, Frosty, Grinch, all versions of “A Christmas Carol”, Charlie Brown, A Christmas Story, you name it, it’s been watched!
6. Have you been playing any good games on your phone lately? I am addicted to “Hay Day.” But I don’t know if I’d call it “good.” LOL!
7. Strangest gift you’ve ever given or received? Ha! Anything my Grandma gives me, clothing wise. One year I got a nightgown and fuzzy socks, which is also what she gave her husbands’ daughters that year, I was probably 30, the daughters’ were all in their 50’s and 60’s. Awesome. Old lady nightgown. It was funny.
8. Which outdated phrases do you still like using? I say “bitchin'” waaaaaaaaaay too much! And “groovy”, and I really want to start saying “swell” because I found my Grandpa’s old yearbooks from when he was a teacher in the 70’s, and everyone who signed it used the word “swell” and that tickled me.
9. Have you ever gone camping in the snow? NO. And I guarantee I won’t ever do that! Ever. Ever.
10. Favorite past or present makeup trend or fad? A bold red lip, it never goes out of style, it’s always classic.
Shannon says
1. Have you ever been on TV?
Don’t think so!
2. What’s the scariest thing that’s happened while you were home alone?
Well, not alone (my sister was home, too) but one night when our parents were gone, we heard the front door creak open… we were upstairs, and were terrified! We tiptoed around, trying to see what was going on, and ultimately called the police! …turns out the wind just opened the door, and there was no one around. We felt pretty silly, but looking back I’m glad we took the safe route! 🙂
3. Did you decorate your house for the holidays?
A little. We had an advent “tree” (added an ornament every day), but that was pretty much it. We’ll be out of town for Christmas, so didn’t get too crazy.
4. Have you ever gone caroling?
Yes! It’s so much freakin fun. I’ve done it in a couple different settings (going round to people’s houses, visiting old folks in resting homes, standing in front of stores) and there’s something special about each way of doing it. Just love it!
5. Did you watch any Christmas specials on TV this year?
Nope. Mainly because we don’t have a TV!
6. Have you been playing any good games on your phone lately?
Not really. I’ve been wanting to get one, too. Maybe this is my sign to go ahead and download something interesting…
7. Strangest gift you’ve ever given or received?
Hmm… this is a hard one! Maybe getting a red, silky nightgown/robe from my parents when I was like, 16? haha! It was really pretty, but I was like, “um… really guys?” I don’t think they made the connection that it was a “sexy” sort of piece of clothing 🙂 lol.
8. Which outdated phrases do you still like using?
“totes” is one… I also tend to accidentally say stuff that’s like, before-my-time sort of outdated, like “nifty” and “shucks.”
9. Have you ever gone camping in the snow?
YES. Not the most exciting thing in the world. But I survived, haha! My hubs and I went camping for our 4th anniversary. We didn’t really realize, apparently, that the end of May would still be frigid in the mountainous regions of Montana… good thing I had an epic sleeping bag that TOTALLY kept me warm. 🙂
10. Favorite past or present makeup trend or fad?
I’m really crushing on red lips right now. (This may or may not be due to the fact that I found the perfect red lippy for me.) But they just seem so classy and sophisticated and sexy and… just ACH. I love.
Rikki Poynter says
1. Have you ever been on TV?
I was on Dutch television with NikkieTutorials once.
2. What’s the scariest thing that’s happened while you were home alone?
I can’t remember, actually.
3. Did you decorate your house for the holidays?
Only a tree, which I don’t even take part in, really.
4. Have you ever gone caroling?
Nope! I don’t have an interest in that!
5. Did you watch any Christmas specials on TV this year?
Only all the movies on Hallmark about 20 times, haha.
6. Have you been playing any good games on your phone lately?
I don’t play games on my phone! I end up forgetting about them.
7. Strangest gift you’ve ever given or received?
Not for Christmas, but for my birthday. I’m not religious at all, and never mentioned religion, and my friend at the time’s mother (I guess) got me a bunch of bibles and Christian related things as a birthday gift and I thought that was just odd… especially since nobody asked if I believed in the first place. I wouldn’t get anyone Atheist-related things if I knew they weren’t an Atheist/didn’t know their belief in the first place.
8. Which outdated phrases do you still like using?
I don’t think I have any…
9. Have you ever gone camping in the snow?
No and I would never, haha. Too cold!
10. Favorite past or present makeup trend or fad?
Winged eyeliner, mascara, & bold lips.
Kylie says
1. Have you ever been on TV?
Yes! I went to The Colbert Report and was in the front row. You can see me and my boyfriend at the beginning and the end of the show. Also, in high school, the recordings of our musicals would get replayed on public access TV, but I don’t really count that.
2. What’s the scariest thing that’s happened while you were home alone?
Hmm, nothing really. It’s funny, I don’t enjoy sleeping alone and I build up terrible things that COULD happen when I’m by myself, but nothing ever has!
3. Did you decorate your house for the holidays?
Of course! We have a big tree, festive tablecloths/dish towels, a Christmas village, Christmas candles, some knick knacks, and lights on our horse-post fence and trees outside.
4. Have you ever gone caroling?
No! Which is sad because I love to sing. I’ve never known anyone who’s done this, though.
5. Did you watch any Christmas specials on TV this year?
Nah. I love Christmas movies, but I’m not a big fan of the TV specials.
6. Have you been playing any good games on your phone lately?
Nope. When I worked in the city and commuted via train/city, I’d play Fruit Ninja a lot, though.
7. Strangest gift you’ve ever given or received?
When I was in 8th grade, my grandparents gave me a toothbrush with a character from a book I never read on it.
8. Which outdated phrases do you still like using?
I love to say “mad ___,” with mad meaning very. (I.e. It’s mad cold.)Also– proper for totally/completely. As in “She is a proper witch.”
9. Have you ever gone camping in the snow?
Noooo. That sounds miserable.
10. Favorite past or present makeup trend or fad?
Bright eyeliner. I wish I did it more often– so fun!

A couple of times, and managed to avoid a couple of others!
2. What’s the scariest thing that’s happened while you were home alone?
You know, I can’t actually think of anything scary that’s happened to me at home…a good thing, I guess! I’ve had a couple of scary things happen to me when I was in the laboratory alone, though…

We have limited space and landlord-imposed restrictions, but we have a miniature tree and some cute figurines (hooray for stuffed-bobblehead-gingerbread girl!.

Nope, but I did just finish Path of Exile on the PC. It’s free to play and pretty awesome!
7. Strangest gift you’ve ever given or received?
You know, I don’t think I’ve ever received anything particularly *strange*. In terms of giving, probably chipping in to help people get some really boring-sounding textbooks! It was what they wanted, and I was happy to help, but there’s a part of you that’s like: *sigh*.
8. Which outdated phrases do you still like using?
Don’t have a cow, man! Is that even outdated?
9. Have you ever gone camping in the snow?
We have summer Christmas in this hemisphere 😉 The only non-summer weather I’ve ever camped in was torrential rain, and I can only hope never to repeat the experience! It was duriong a multi-day hike in the middle of nowhere, and we were carrying the tent, so we, the tent and everything else was DRENCHED the whole time!
10. Favorite past or present makeup trend or fad?
Glitter eyeliner. Lets you have some of the fun of a glitter look, even if you can’t (or don’t want to) go all out with glitter eyeshadows!
Allison says
I’m not going to bore you with answers to all the questions, just a couple:
1. Have you ever been on TV?
Yes, I number of times. I am a market researcher, focus group moderator and strategic planner. When I worked for a big ad agency in NYC before I became a consultant, I was on CNBC and on local NY new stations commenting on consumer behavior.
8. What outdated phrases do you still like using?
cool
9. Have you ever gone camping in the snow?
Yes, I have, unfortunately. Many years ago, one of my old boyfriends owned some land in the woods in Pennsylvania, and we drove out there to spend the night at the end of November. Little did I know, he didn’t have/bring a tent so we slept outside in sleeping bags. It gets dark before 5pm in November, which makes for a very long night especially with no real camping gear or lanterns. We fell asleep and were awakened by heavy snow. At first it was fun, then it was just wet. I convinced him it was almost morning and we should return to Manhattan. Turned out it was only 11pm, but I was thrilled to go home!
10. Favorite trend or fad
Mine is not so much a trend/fad, but it’s the red lip. I wore red lips when no one wore red lips. Still my fave.

All of the Charlie Browns! And I rewatched How the Grinch Stole Christmas that I have on DVR (BECAUSE IT IS MY FAVORITE!!!!) It isn’t Christmas without the Grinch!

8. Which outdated phrases do you still like using?
Ish Kabbible – a 1920s phrase meaning “Who cares?” or “No worries.”

1. Have you ever been on TV? I think on local news when I was a little kid.
2. What’s the scariest thing that’s happened while you were home alone? Some really scary, loud dogs came to our house and were barking like mad in the driveway. 7. Strangest gift you’ve ever given or received? My friends and I used to joke about one of our mentors who would say that she’d hit us with a “hippie bashing stick” as a joke, so I gave my friend a huge stick with a rope handle on it for a hippie bashing stick. 8. Which outdated phrases do you still like using? My parents always used old fashioned phrases, plus I hung out with my grandparents a lot, so I still say those. 9. Have you ever gone camping in the snow?

10. Favorite past or present makeup trend or fad?

1. Have you ever been on TV? No, I’m pretty shy about things like that! About 9 years ago I had to introduce my boss on stage at a conference in front of hundreds of people and, to borrow from Jennifer Lawrence, I felt like I was “shaking and peeing like a chihuahua.” So TV sounds extremely frightening!
2. What’s the scariest thing that’s happened while you were home alone? I heard the shower come on in my parents’ bathroom at the back of the house and they were out at dinner. I grabbed my metal music stand and went to investigate, heart pounding. I turned off the shower and went back to the living room and waited, scared out of my mind until my parents got back home! It turned out the water had been shut off during the day and my mom turned the shower on, forgetting the water was off, and forgot to turn it back off. So when water was restored, the shower came on seemingly by itself! My mom felt so bad!
3. Did you decorate your house for the holidays? Yes! I love Christmas!
4. Have you ever gone caroling? Never! But I do sing along to holiday hits in the car with gusto.
5. Did you watch any Christmas specials on TV this year? Not yet, but maybe tomorrow!
6. Have you been playing any good games on your phone lately? No, but I’m obsessed with PicsPlay Pro for photo editing!
7. Strangest gift you’ve ever given or received? A used flashlight. Without batteries. Thanks, grandma! 😉
8. Which outdated phrases do you still like using? The bomb, and an occasional groovy when used to describe something.
9. Have you ever gone camping in the snow? No. I’d prefer to “glamp” in the snow – at a ski lodge with mountain views and hot cocoa!
10. Favorite past or present makeup trend or fad? I will always be a fan of neutral, natural makeup made huge during the 90’s. It’s a look that anyone can pull off and look polished but not overdone.
Merry Christmas, Karen, Tabs, & El Hub! 😀
