You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past six years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Leopard spots or zebra stripes?
Cat lady says what now?! Leopard spots, of course. - Have you ever blown a kiss to a stranger?
Not that I can recall, but stranger things have happened after a glass of wine or two… - A movie that scared you as a child?
Salam’s Lot, HOLY CRAP. I don’t know whose idea it was to allow a bunch of 5-year-olds to watch that movie at the babysitter’s house, but it went down, and I was (and still am) traumatized. - Are you a back, tummy or side sleeper?
Yes! I usually fall asleep on my back, but then roll on to my tummy or side in the wee hours of the morning. - Who’s your team?
THE NINERS! - Do you, or does someone you know, have a sixth sense?
I’m not sure… Maybe. I do get a very strong sense of déjà vu sometimes. And there have been a few times when something — a very distinct, unmistakable gut feeling that something isn’t right — has probably saved my life. - How are you at multitasking?
Absolute crap. - What was the last skincare product you finished down to the last drop?
I think it was NARS Aqua Gel Luminous Oil-Free Moisturizer… I used it a lot toward the end of summer because it was lightweight, super moisturizing and didn’t give me breakouts. It’s probably not moisturizing enough for me now that it’s gotten colder and drier, but I’ll use it again next spring and summer.
- If you could be a makeup artist for any brand, which brand would it be?
MAC or NARS, for sure. 🙂 - On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your current ability to work a smokey eye?
Hmm… I’ll say 7.5? I think I can handle the basic styles OK, but I’m sure there are plenty of tweaks and improvements I could do.
Now it’s your turn. Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em! 🙂1. Leopard spots or zebra stripes?
2. Have you ever blown a kiss to a stranger?
3. A movie that scared you as a child?
4. Are you a back, tummy or side sleeper?
5. Who’s your team?
6. Do you, or does someone you know, have a sixth sense?
7. How are you at multitasking?
8. Last skincare product you finished down to the last drop?
9. If you could be a makeup artist for any brand, which brand would it be?
10. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your current ability to work a smokey eye?
Somewhere between the 49er roll and deep-fried soft-shell crab somebody at the table brought up shapeshifters…
Yes, these are the kinds of deep thoughts my friends and I have while we’re stuffing our faces with sushi drizzled in a nice ponzu sauce.
So yesterday I went to the South Bay to hang out with my girlfriends, Jen and Cindy, and to take Jen to a spa for her belated birthday present, and then afterward we had sushi at this place called Cha Cha Sushi in San Jose.
Jen believes that shapeshifters — assuming they exist, of course — are limited to transforming into something of the same mass, like, the example used at the table was that if you’re a 100-pound girl who shapeshifts into a bodybuilder, you might look like a bodybuilder on the outside, but you’ll only weigh 100 pounds, so you won’t be able to lift as much as an actual 300-pound bodybuilder would…
I guess this makes partial sense to me, since matter is neither created nor destroyed (that’s one thing I remember from my science years), but I think that if you’re already assuming that shapeshifters exist, then you’re already messing with the natural world and its laws as we know them, so I think it’s safe to assume that certain laws are being bent, because hello! — someone is SHIFTING THEIR SHAPE! 🙂
Unfortunately, we left the issue unresolved because the food arrived to the table…
OMG! So freakin’ good. There’s just something magical about spas and sushi, really. Every day should be a spa-sushi day… Someone needs to print that on a t-shirt.
How’s it going this morning? Do you have a couple minutes to say hi and touch base in the Monday Poll? I hope so. It’s a nice way to get the creative juices flowing, and I always like to hear how you’re doing.
Talk to ya soon!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Karen says
Hi Twyla,
It’s funny that you mention that because my friends aren’t particularly girly (one of them, Cindy, is a total tomboy), but they are ALWAYS down for massages, go figure! 😀
How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun?
Twyla says
I have never had a spa day with a gf or by myself,Pedicures yes! but its just me lol. If & when a gf or a sister needs their makeup done, they come to me cause they don’t own makeup & don’t know how to apply it.

Hi Heids,
Been meaning to tell you that the TJ’s Pumpkin Body Butter you recommended has CHANGED MY LIFE. I bought a jar a couple weeks ago and absolutely love it. So thank you!
Happy Monday and have a great week!
Heidi says
Glad you love it! When that’s gone you should try their Coconut Body Butter, which is year-round, not just seasonal. It’s awesome, too!
Sorry I’ve been MIA around here lately. Lots going on. Phoenix’s Mom and I took him to the Pet Expo at the fairgrounds up here two weeks ago in order to have him meet this guy from Animal Planet that was appearing. Long story short, we are now the proud co-owners of an adorable Beagle! She’s a six year old laboratory rescue, was going to be difficult to adopt, and we looked in her eyes and couldn’t stand to leave her there. She lives at Phoenix’s house, but I get her for a couple of hours every day. She’s an amazing, gentle spirit. She is not bothered at all by Missy. Missy, however, is going to take some work. She growls and hisses. Hopefully soon we’ll get them to peacefully co-exist.
Trisha says
1. Leopard spots or zebra stripes? I like them both!
2. Have you ever blown a kiss to a stranger? Probably. That sounds like something I’d do. Especially if I was driving past them and knew I’d never see them again. 😉
3. A movie that scared you as a child? This is going to sound weird, but A Christmas Story always scared me. Even now, at 30, I refuse to watch it. The tongue on the pole thing scared me the most, but other stuff, too. The whole tone of the movie is unsettling to me.
4. Are you a back, tummy or side sleeper? I start on my back and end up on my side. Then I toss and turn, switching sides all night.
5. Who’s your team? I don’t have one, so let’s say Team Trisha!
6. Do you, or does someone you know, have a sixth sense? I think I read people well–I have really good intuition about people. Also, my mom sometimes has prophetic dreams.
7. How are you at multitasking? I’m great at it!
8. Last skincare product you finished down to the last drop? I’m not sure, but I’m dangerously close to finishing my Pond’s BB+ cream. I’ll be sad when it’s over.
9. If you could be a makeup artist for any brand, which brand would it be? Sigma!
10. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your current ability to work a smokey eye? I’d say a 6 or 7. I can do a pretty good smoky eye, but there’s definitely room for improvement.
Karen says
Hi Trisha,
Thanks for filling out the poll today. I love how you chose to do both stripes and spots. Mixing and matching prints! So very modern of you.
Have a lovely week. 🙂
Marina(Makeup4all) says
1. Leopard spots or zebra stripes? I dislike both

Rachel P. says
Hi Karen! I thought about the shapeshifting thing, and I agree that the laws of science are totally bent or ignored when it comes to things like this! I don’t know how I feel about shapeshifters existing, but hypothetically- I bet they could take on any mass or property they wanted!
1. Leopard spots or zebra stripes? – Leopard, babay!
2. Have you ever blown a kiss to a stranger? – Um, yes. Definitely I have. One time when I was living in France, I was a bit drunk and tried to do the bisous (double cheek kiss) on a stranger in the street. They ran away.
3. A movie that scared you as a child? – The Witches! It was the movie version of Roald Dahl’s book- the book wasn’t bad, but as a little kid, the movie was terrifying!!
4. Are you a back, tummy or side sleeper? – Side sleeper, unfortunately! Which is going to give me the worst face wrinkles someday.
5. Who’s your team? – Detroit Red Wings!
6. Do you, or does someone you know, have a sixth sense? – I don’t think so- at least, not they’ve told me about! And I don’t think I have one- at least, not one I’m in touch with!
7. How are you at multitasking? – Like you said- absolute crap. I don’t even try anymore, lol. My style is to put my all into one task, complete it, and then move on to the next one- no matter if the task is big or small. When someone interrupts my current work to throw something new at me that they need done right away, I internally go berserk.
8. Last skincare product you finished down to the last drop? – The Body Shop’s Seaweed Facial Cleanser and Moisturizer (I finished them about the same time). Nice products, love the seaweed content, but they didn’t work wonders.
9. If you could be a makeup artist for any brand, which brand would it be? – Too Faced or Kat Von D!
10. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your current ability to work a smokey eye? – Mmmm…. 5. Still lots of practice and experimentation to be had!

5. Who’s your team?
We play cricket where I live. So yeah, the national cricket team, Go Green Shirts!
6. Do you, or does someone you know, have a sixth sense?
My fiance, he builds a good estimate about who is genuine and who isn’t. His predictions about people ALWAYS prove right.
7. How are you at multitasking?
Just ok. Not awesome like my grandma! She is 70 and can do 10 things at the same time!
8. Last skincare product you finished down to the last drop?
Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion. It works best on my temperamental skin.
9. If you could be a makeup artist for any brand, which brand would it be?
That would be major day dreaming but-NARS! 😀
10. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your current ability to work a smokey eye?
I think I can do a good smokey eye,I would say 7 🙂
Btw, you look so good in that picture, wondering what foundation you have on… Also you and I are the SAME color :p Bobbi Brown Stick Foundation-honey and MAC face and Body-C5 :)So every time I want to be sure about my color in some product, I check up your blog to see if you have reviewed it.

Happy Monday!
Stephanie A. says
1. Leopard spots or zebra stripes? C–all of the above, and at the same time…
2. Have you ever blown a kiss to a stranger? Um…I do this all the time. Does that make me a psycho? I especially like to blow kisses to people who cut me off in traffic–it totally messes with their minds better than um, other, hand gestures.

9. If you could be a makeup artist for any brand, which brand would it be? I don’t think I could choose–I’m such a product whore!
10. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your current ability to work a smokey eye? Probably a 7-8 if I stick with a bronzy/brown smoky eye. If I’m using blacks, greys, etc. that number drops to a -10! Can’t seem to get those blended correctly, and it just looks sloppy/smeared–I look like I’ve skipped ahead of the whole day/night to the next day’s walk of shame! Not, of course, that a walk of shame is an inevitable end to my day or night! Did that just get awkward????

Tarte. Love them and their products.

Oh, and sorry Jen but True Blood proves you wrong. Remember when Sam turned into a fly? He never would have gotten off the ground if he still weighed his human weight. And, surely True Blood could not be wrong. 😉

I was scared for weeks! In high school, my friend and I snuck into the theatre to see Seven (Se7en?) though we bought tickets to Powder. This still cracks me up!

That’s actually a very good point regarding shapeshifters. It doesn’t make sense for someone to be able to turn into something with more or less mass than their original form. I understand that magic is involved, but magic without rules isn’t any fun. To some degree, it still has to obey physics, at least in this universe (though Discworld is a special case; on Discworld, magic exists in place of physics, though it definitely has its rules, and it’s in your best interest not to annoy them).
Your friends and my friends need to go out for sushi sometime. I think we’d have some pretty awesome conversations. 😀
1. Leopard spots or zebra stripes?
Screech owl feathers, thank you very much! Though I’ll take snowy owl in a pinch.
2. Have you ever blown a kiss to a stranger?
Yep, sarcastically. 😀
3. A movie that scared you as a child?
You’re kidding, right? My bedtime stories were E. A. Poe. I got deliciously creeped out by movies. I adored Poltergeist and Something Wicked This Way Comes.
You know what scared me? The Cold War. I’d watched the news with my parents since birth, and was introduced to the concept of international relations when, as a toddler, I asked why the hostages in Iran didn’t just come home if they were unhappy. I understood the concepts of countries, and war, and killing, and I knew more about WWII than any little kid ever should–hence, I knew what nuclear bombs could do.
I was a messed up kid. Thankfully, I grew into a messed up but reasonably cool about it adult.
4. Are you a back, tummy or side sleeper?
Whatever’s most comfortable on any given day. Also, whatever doesn’t disturb the cats.
5. Who’s your team?
#TEAMBOMBUR!!!!!
6. Do you, or does someone you know, have a sixth sense?
I’m a major skeptic, but I have a weird ability to know when things are going to happen. I’ll think about people I haven’t seen in years or decades, and I’ll run into them. I’ll think about movies, and they’ll come on. It’s eerie.
Additionally, I don’t believe in any kind of predestination, but at the same time, I should be dead at least a dozen times over. And I don’t mean, oh, if I’d been going a little faster, that car would have hit me. I mean, on my sixth birthday, I got hit by a wave near SF that covered me by at least three feet, but there was no power behind it when it went out. I swear the Pacific did me a solid. And when I was 16, my pulse rate hit 260–no, that’s not a typo. Fetal heartbeats are only about 240. I should have flatlined. But, no, I was fine by the next day. Things like this happen to me fairly regularly, and I don’t know why. Either I’m really lucky, or Death is really bored.
7. How are you at multitasking?
HAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!! My inability to multitask actually came up in my FORMAL DISABILITY ARGUMENT. That’s bad.
8. Last skincare product you finished down to the last drop?
My first spray bottle of pure jojoba oil. I use it to clean and moisturize my skin. It’s a miracle product around my eyes. I swear, that stuff should be sold as an anti-aging product. It gets rid of fine lines like gangbusters.
9. If you could be a makeup artist for any brand, which brand would it be?
Does Weta Workshop count?
10. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your current ability to work a smokey eye?
Depends how shaky my hands are on the given day. Could be anywhere from a 1 to an 8. Bad day, I can barely put on sunblock and powder. On a great day, what color smoky eye do you want? I’ve found that bruise purple with my waterlines rimmed with either burgundy or black kohl (yes, Middle Eastern-style kohl), and my lash lines smudged with charcoal or deep purple gel liner, looks absolutely incredible with green eyes. I’m dying to try a red one with black kohl and liner, or a navy one with black. Traditional gray or black ones are awesome, but what’s the point in doing your makeup exactly like everyone else?
Stephanie Smith says
1. Leopard spots or zebra stripes? Hmmmm, leopard spots. But not too often.
2. Have you ever blown a kiss to a stranger? Yes, mostly to babies! LOL! A few grown ups before I met the husband.
3. A movie that scared you as a child? I didn’t watch scary movies when I was a kid, but I do know that “RoboCop” was the first movie I watched that changed me, the violence in it.
4. Are you a back, tummy or side sleeper? Side. Mostly my left side.
5. Who’s your team? NINERS!!! I married into a 49er family, it is grounds for divorce if you aren’t a niner fan! LOL!
6. Do you, or does someone you know, have a sixth sense? My friend’s Grandpa was killed in a car accident in the middle of an orange grove that he didn’t own. There was no way at all to be able to find him. My friend, on a feeling, drove to exactly where he was. How she did it, I’ll never know, but I’m so glad that she was able to do that. Also, my Grandpa visited me in a dream a month after he died, it wasn’t a dream, he was actually there, it amazed me at the time, it still does. Very comforting.
7. How are you at multitasking? If I give everything the same priority, then I’m great. If something is more important than something else, then I forget it. And if I don’t write stuff down, I’ll never ever remember it. Ever. Ever.
8. Last skincare product you finished down to the last drop? Benefit’s Hello Flawless foundation. I’ve never finished a foundation in my 38 years of life, but this one I really like. It’s light and buildable and really works for me.
9. If you could be a makeup artist for any brand, which brand would it be? Urban Decay, the colors and names of products, loooove!
10. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your current ability to work a smokey eye? Hmmmmm, probably a 2. I prefer a smokey eye in colors, purples or olives, not blacks/greys. Looks better on me. But I like a more neutral eye and a bold lip.
