Tomorrow is going to be a hot one here in Nor Cal… They’re saying 90 degrees, ugh! I wish we could all play hooky together and have a beauty barbecue at the beach.
But since we can’t (at least not this time), let’s have a virtual beach party instead!
Here’s what I’m wearing to the party…
And these are the snacks I’m bringing…
Who wants to work the barbecue? If you help do the cooking, you don’t have to clean.
Can you make it to the party tomorrow? I hope so.
It’s potluck and BYOM (Bring Your Own Makeup). Tell me what look you’ll be wearing and what food you’re going to bring (oy, my stomach just rumbled!). Can’t wait to see you!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Oh girl, do I hear you on the Bay Area cooking tomorrow! I was walking to the Caltrain station and thinking about what skirt or dress I’m wearing to work tomorrow!
I’ll be wearing Benefit’s You Rebel Lite, Strobe Kiss (thank you for recommending this, by the way — I love it!), the new Stila Kitten eyeshadow palette, DuWop bronzer in June with Smashbox skin tint in Heat, and L’Oreal mascara in Voluminous (since that’s the one I’ve been testing lately). For bonus beachy goodness, I’ll wear my Kai perfume oil!
I ordered the new DuWop Revolotion for body, by the way — I’m hoping it’s what I’ve been dreaming of! I desperately need something that bronzes pale legs and protects them with SPF at the same time…

Shiseido 55 SPF Sunscreen
Clinique Quick eyes in Starlit pink
waterproof lash stylist in very black
A little Nars Laguna bronzer and

May 14th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Hi Jeanne,
Do you have L’Oreal Voluminous or Voluminous Carbon Black? VCB is the shizz and is one of my go-to mascaras.
It’s pretty hot up here in the North Bay. I’m wearing a dress to work today, too!
BTW, I am so pleased that you like Strobe Kiss! It’s such a wonderful product and a really pretty color.
May 14th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Hi KK,
VS Lipglosses seem to be really popular! I am going to test one today, me thinks. I love PINK pajamas, too. I have several different fun t’s and jammies and wearing the bright colors always makes me happy.
Oh! I still have to look for that hair leave in. Gotta write that one on the list.
And girl, I am all over the guac. I loves me some well executed chips and dip.
NICE! I will have to check if there’s any SATC midnight showings in my ‘hood. Who are you going with?
May 14th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Hi Iheartmakeup!!
Thanks for coming to the BBQ! BTW, what do you think of MAC Select Tint?
How’s the new job going?
May 14th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Hi KK,
Good call… gotta have the sunscreen at the beach! I will bring some big beach umbrellas for shade, though, just in case we get tired of sitting in the sun.
May 14th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Hi Meaghan,
SWEET! I have friends who live up there. They are trying to get us to move up there and one of the things that holds me back is the weather. How often is it hot up your way? How long does your summer last?
May 14th, 2008 at 11:23 am
Hi Glosslizard!
Rockin’! I am not so good with open flames so I’m glad someone is manning the BBQ.
Girl, you are rocking those cream shadows.
May 14th, 2008 at 11:24 am
Hi Lindsay,
Last week all I wanted to eat for breakfast was rice and Spam, ha! When I go home with El Hub next month I hope my mom in-law makes my faves: Kahlua pork, Portuguese sausage and rice (so yummy), etc. El Hub practically spent half his childhood at potlucks, LOL.
May 14th, 2008 at 11:24 am
Hi Karen B,
Yay! Another girl that can handle the grill. Thanks for volunteering.
I love that peach from Garden Party. Hmm… maybe I’ll wear it today!
May 14th, 2008 at 11:24 am
Hi Cally,
I love watermelon during hot weather, too. I hate cutting it open - so lazy.
May 14th, 2008 at 11:25 am
Hi Megan,
Bring it all! After I read your list my tummy seriously started rumbling. I am sucker for a good potato salad.
High 70s - that’s perfect sandal weather!
May 14th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Oh god please take me some place warmer! Highs here are in the mid 70s!!
To this fantasy beach party I will bring black bean and corn dip, and a jug of iced green tea. Instead of grilling I’ll be DJing. I’ve got some serious mad trax on my iPod!
As for makeup here’s my list
-Prep+prime skin with spf
-Mineralize skinfinish natural
-either fushia fix tinted lip cond or strobe current
-heatherette smooth harmony bp
May 14th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Hi Tania,
Yes! The party definitely needs tunes, so thank you for volunteering to DJ.
I *love* Strobe Currant, too! BTW, how do you like your MSF?
May 14th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
So how do you feel about olives? I have to admit that for a long time I didn’t really like green olives…except my grandma always put them in her potato salad. Anyway now that i am an adult I can appreciate a good green olive…and I make my potato salad just like my grandma with a little bit of green olives in it. It flips some people out though.
Seriously though like a week and a half ago I hooked up some crispy baked chicken, corn on the cob and green beans with new potatoes…the boyf was in heaven…and I was sending him home with leftovers…he was trying to be nice and was like now I don’t need to take all the corn (there were like 2 or 3 ears left) and I was like…Oh I already ate corn on the cob twice this week. He got slightly indignant that I didn’t invite him over for dinner earlier in the week.
I loves me some corn on the cob.
May 14th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Hi Megan,
I like green olives but have never had them in a potato salad! Sounds like it would be super yummy if the olives didn’t overwhelm the salad.
Corn on the cob = heaven. Every year I try to go to the Marin county fair just so I can go to this one food stand that sells roasted corn, and every year I get that cob and I go apesh*t on it. Last year I ate it with such vigor that I mortified El Hub. Ahhh, good times.
How complicated is your baked chicken recipe? I am looking for an easy one that I can make during the weekday. I haven’t been cooking lately because I’ve been so scatterbrained/busy but have pledged to get better about eating at home.
May 14th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Hey Karen.
I’ll be there with my wide brim “j.lo” hat! I’ll bring some strawberry lemonade!!! With this hot weather my laziness has kicked into overdrive.
I usually just curl my lashes with my curler but I went and got an eye lash perm yesterday. Just give me a good bronzer, lip balm, some SPF 30 lotion and I’m good to go.
May 14th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
The baked Chicken recipe is pretty easy. It takes awhile though because I usually use split chicken breasts and they take a long time to get done in the oven - but the prep is easy - you could use boneless breasts to shorten cooking time some. I use cornflake crumbs…which is why the chicken is crispy out of the oven. I buy the cornflake crumbs in a box in the baking aisle - but I suppose you could but cornflakes and crush them. Typically I just remove the skin (if it’s on the chicken i bought), I make an egg wash in a bowl with an egg, a little milk (I usually get fancy and add a Tbsp dijon mustard and a tsp of hot sauce to the egg wash, but you don’t have to…or you can use buttermilk instead). In a separate shallow dish I pour in some of the cornflake crumbs (about 1.5 to 2 cups depending on how much chicken you’re making) and I season depending on my mood - typically like 1 tsp of thyme, 2 tsp of paprika, salt and pepper…other times I just add seasoning salt and pepper if I’m in a hurry. Honestly I don’t think you can mess this recipe up as long as you put some kind of seasonings in there. Then you stir the seasonings in with the bread crumbs. You just dip each piece of chicken in the egg wash until coated, dip in the cornflake crumb mixture and you can bake them either on a cookie sheet (they will kinda carmelize on the bottom with the juices) or you can cook them on a broiler pan with a rack and they will be crispy all over. I typically bake for an hour at 350/375 or thereabouts until the juices run clear.

Hi PeeChee,
Cute! Feel free to bring the kids.
To keep them occupied during all the makeup talk we’ll give ‘em some beach toys — a bucket and shovel works wonders!
You are brave with your lash perm! How did it go? Do you like the results? Every time I hear the word “perm” I think of the bad ones I had in the 80s, aye.
May 14th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Hi Megan,
It must be baked chicken destiny, as I have a bunch of chicken breasts in the freezer and a box of Special K in the cupboard. I am so making this on the weekend. I really love crispy chicken but I don’t eat friend food often (gives me a stomach ache) so I think this will be right up my alley. For spices I’m going to use rosemary, paprika, salt and pepper.
Thanks a bunch for this recipe! I can’t wait to try it. *stomach rumbles*
May 14th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Hi Vivien,
Boo to the rain! Good thing you can make it to the party!
LOL, Pringles are my dietary downfall! I’ve never tried the Pizza flavor, but they sound really delicious.
May 14th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Hi Christine,
Woo hoo! Big ups to the girl bearing the tequila!
I’ll chip in for some cold beers, too!
And thank you for saying that you dig the site!
May 14th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Hi Erin,
I love copper at the beach, too. It’s just the right amount of color without looking like you’re trying too hard.
I am going to have a sundae with two scoops of ice cream and *lots* of caramel sauce.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Glad I could help.
Like I said the prep is super easy. Then you just gotta get it in the oven and let it cook. The boxed cornflake crumbs are a little bigger than the texture of boxed bread crumbs. So I would say maybe fill a plastic ziploc and crush the special K in that. In fact you could just throw your seasonings in and shake the mixture up. It would likely work to coat the chicken in the bag too.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Hi Megan,
That’s a good idea to add the seasonings in with the flakes. Ahh, I loves me some stream-lined cooking! I am going to use a broiler pan to maximize the crispiness! I can’t wait.
May 14th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Yeah, who says girls can’t handle the grill? I once did a barbie for like 14 of my friends in my grandma’s backyard and I did all the grilling. The guys were like: how does it work? It got me my “Barbie” nickname… That, and my blond hair. Lol

Hi Karen B.,
That’s a cute story for your nickname! One of these days I’ll learn how to grill; it really does seem like an art form. I am a total wimp, though, when it comes to open flames! They make me nervous, LOL.
I do love well executed barbeque chicken. Yum!
