You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
Well, it has gotten progressively less fussy over the past few months. It used to involve some combination of brows, lashes, foundation (or tinted moisturizer), concealer, blush AND gloss, but I’ve been keeping it simpler lately.Like, last Sunday morning El Hub and I ran out to grab a croissant and coffee from our favorite bakery, and I just wore a little tinted balm — that’s it — and even that was only because my lips were hella dry.
I still like getting gussied up and wearing more complicated weekend makeup sometimes, but lately, not so much. I’ve been more into going bare faced.
- Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
LOL! Yeah. Totally. Just my left nostril though. The hairs on the right aren’t as jungly. - Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
Totally necessary, but if and only if we’re talking about Estee Lauder’s Little Black Primer.GURL, one time and you’ll be hooked. It’ll take your favorite mascara to the next level.
- Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
Bah! No to the espadrilles, because I had a pair once that totally hurt my feet, so gladiator shoes it is (ideally in a nude shade)! — even though I’ll probably end up with a weird tan on my legs. - 5 random things you’re loving right now?
- Hearing the sound of baby birds chirping outside (there’s a nest in the hanging plant off my deck!)
- Watermelon (been eating a TON of it lately)
- Charli XCX’s Sucker album (good running music)
- These Denco Stainless Steel Nail Clippers. (They have a plastic catcher to catch the nail clippings so they don’t just fly all over the place! Why I derive so much joy from this, I have no idea.)
- My Roxy leopard-print slip-ons
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!
1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
Top o’ the morning to you, kitty cat! My mind’s kind of going in 10 million directions today, but it’s all good. Once the tea kicks in, all will be right with the world. 🙂
How are you doin’? Do you have a minute to touch base in today’s Monday Poll? It’s a time-tested, highly effective way to get into your mental groove.
Talk to ya soon!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
The week-end is actually when I can be the most creative with my makeup so I don’t have a typical look. If I’m just chillin’ at home, then it might just be a neutral brightening cream shadow (bareMinerals BB eyeshadow), light powder foundation, peachy blush and some sort of coral on the lips.
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
Yes, recently. Those things seem to grow longer as I age?!? I used a nail clipper but that wasn’t too easy for that task!
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
Totally overrated. The only thing they seem to be able to do is lenghten (if they contain fibers) or add a bit of volume, but I don’t think they do anything to curve (my main problem) or make your mascara last longer.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
Gladiator shoes, I really like them!
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
– British series Death in Paradise on Netflix. It’s like Agatha Christie in the tropics!
– Google Play Music radios. They have radios for different times of the day, activity or mood. Really cool and no commercials unlike Pandora!
– My new YSL Touche Eclat foundation. That thing is GOOD.
– Fish tacos. We cook them at home about once a week!
– Running with my hubby. It’s a great couple activity, even though he’s a much much better/more advanced runner than I am.
Have a great week Karen!
Karen says
Thank you for that series rec, Lulle! It sounds like something I would like. 🙂
P.S. Send me your recipe for fish tacos!
Lulle says
The pilot of that show is terrible, the actors sound fake and the dialogues are poor, but if you can go past that first episode it gets really good and a chemistry develops between the characters. After doing some research, it’s one of the top rated BBC series these days.
My fish taco recipe is super simple: cook some white fish with the spices of your choice. Serve on warm tortillas with chopped cilantro, green onion, cabbage, tomatoes, and avocado. The secret ingredient that brings it all together is the sauce: I simple mix sour cream with fresh lime juice and chipotle hot sauce, and it’s really yummy!
Karen says
I tried to watch the pilot last night and didn’t make it through the first ten minutes, lol. Glad to know that it gets better, so I’ll try again.
Thank you for the fish taco recipe! I have almost everything in my kitchen except for the chipotle hot sauce, which I can get at Target. Can’t wait to make it, because it sounds easy and tasty. 🙂

1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
It’s either next to nothing (BB cream, brows, mascara, tinted balm) or completely over-the-top (think, smokey eye to go to Target) because I’ll actually sit down to ENJOY doing my makeup and digging through my collection. On weekdays, it’s all about the quickest look possible to get me out the door, so things get neglected.
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
Trimmed, no. Usually not an issue, but recently I spied a weird one and plucked it. Tweezers were the first thing I could find. Yes, it hurt a little. (I’m taking Viviscal for my hair, so I blame that.)
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
I don’t feel it’s necessary for me. People that have issues with their mascara transferring ought to try it.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
Tough one. I’ll say gladiators because those are usually flats and I refuse to wear anything but flats. Heels are the devil! (…says the 36-year-old…)
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
1. Darling Magazine, which I just subscribed to and received my first issue today.
2. Kantha throws.
3. My new Wildfox sweatshirt that says “i love it!” because it makes me laugh and is supremely comfortable.
4. You’ve Got Mail, because even though the technology is outdated it’s still insanely quotable. Nora Ephron, FTW.
5. Numi’s rose and white tea.
This was fun! Thanks, Karen!
Jessica says
Mascara Primer! YES!
UD SUBVERSION.
It is WONDERFUL, surely you have tried it??????
oh you must.
Karen says
I have! Estee Lauder’s is my current fave though!
Kwmechelle says
1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look. Same as my daily look, though I’ve got a few looks that I found on the ‘Tube that I’d like to try- mascara, concealer, liner, eyeshadow, brows, the kitchen sink. That kinda thing 🙂
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)? Gurl, YAS! Your’s truly is hairy. No shame in my game 🙂
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated? TOTALLY necessary. And I agree. The Estee’ Lauder primer is mandatory, although I’ve yet to try the black one. I’ve only ever used the white one. But when I use it, I can use a drugstore mascara & give RuPaul a run for his money
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.) Gladiators for sho’! I has long slim legs. I think they’re bada$$.
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
Candy- what can I say? Your girl has a sweet tooth
Salsa- I made a batch this weekend & paired with lime tostitos, it’s heaven in a bowl.
Undercuts- mine keeps growing out faster than I can keep up but I’m currently OBSESSED with them.
Makeup- this, I’m sure, is a no brainer
Open-toed wedge sandals- I bought a pair from Tarjay (read: Target) over the weekend & I’m on the hunt for a cute nude pair ☺️

Nope!
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
I have no idea! I’ve never used one.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)

1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
Nada. I go makeup free most weekend. If anything, I’m testing out a new product I picked up. If I’m running errands and feel like I look dead, it’s bb cream, eyebrows done, bronzer, and mascara.
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
Nope! Though I was looking at them in the mirror the other day….
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
I haven’t been impressed with any so far…
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
Gladiator sandals all the way.
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
– Rereading “Game of Thrones”
– Pilates! I hated it about a week ago and now I’m like yeah let’s go feel like crap for half an hour and be sore! But you’ll be toned!
– Pita bread.
– Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song” EP. Four songs of amazingness.
– Penny Dreadful on Showtime! I am obsessed. I watched the whole first season this weekend. Granted, it was only 8 episodes, but I had other stuff to do.

2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?

I’ve never tried one, but I say go for it if you have the chance!

1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look. My weekend look is no different from my week looks 🙂 Smokey eyes + a subtle lip!
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)? Oh yeah, I do it every weekend. No shame in that! <_<
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated? Neither. It does do *something*. But it's not a must-have for me.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.) Gladiator shoes! I love gladiator shoes! The more straps the better!
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now? Chocolate (and not just right now), avocado (oddly enough), this new prosecco we discovered a few weeks back, loose flowy tops and gold jewelry.
Allison C says
1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look. I don’t really have one look. Since I seem to be working from home, I don’t put on any makeup unless I’m going out which is the same for weekends. BB/CC cream, cream blush, neutral cream shadow, black tight liner, mascara, lipstick or gloss is the standard look
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)? no
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated? overrated
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.) I love my Vince Camuto gladiators from last summer
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?

Erin says
1. Typical weekend look: tinted SPF (usually Shiseido Urban Defense SPF 47), brightening concealer (L’Oreal Visible Lift CC Eye), and translucent powder. I’ve been doing simple stuff lately.
2. Nose hair trimming: Gosh, I don’t think I have! I should probably experiment with that.
3. Mascara primer: I’d probably keep one in my rotation if I had more money lying around. It’s normally a higher-end kind of product, and I just have other things I’d rather buy. I bet I’d love the one from Estee Lauder, though.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? Espadrilles!
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
– Good tea. Picked up a couple new kinds to try this weekend from a Chinatown tea shop. I’m trying to replace my Ten Ren teas, which I bought maybe a month or so ago and they were very affordable, but not so tasty.
– We just bought one of those daylight lamps/alarm clocks for the bedroom, and it’s amazing. New favorite thing.
– Ramen, apparently, because I had it twice over the weekend. Though I usually try not to eat it too frequently (salt bomb). I had an amazing spicy ramen with fried calamari on Saturday after watching the fireworks, and it was goooood.
– Drinking sherry in the evening with the boyfriend like we’re Frasier and Niles. We unearthed a bottle that we don’t actually remember ever buying, but it’s actually really tasty.
– Makeup reorganization. I’ve done a big drawer re-org and have set aside a whole bunch of stuff for de-potting and pressing, neither of which I’ve ever tried before! I need the space and I’m really excited about making a Z palette order and trying to press some of my loose shadows for the first time. It’ll make them so much easier to reach for and use.
Happy Monday!

*usually it’s a BB cream or bare face
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)
*Ummmmm No
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
*Overrated. There are plenty of mascara brands that wear great without primer. Save the primer for eyeshadows.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.
*Espadrilles
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
*My 2- month old daughter cooing, Google music radio, binge TV watching (The Good Wife is awesome), makeup blogs, couponing!

1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
Lately, it’s just been some moisturizer and lip balm. For some reason, I’ve been feeling really lazy about makeup. I think the hot summer weather has something to do with it.
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
No, luckily I’ve never had to do that! But I have had to shave off some toe hairs.
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
I’ve never tried it, so thanks for the reccomendation!
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
I love gladiator shoes! I saw some serious (like up to the knee) gladiator sandals in the shops in Greece, but I prefer a more tame version that stops around the ankles. 🙂
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
– Dresses. I love being able to thrown on one item of clothing, slip on some shoes and be ready to go.
– Almond M&Ms. I’m not crazy about peanuts, so these are yummy!
– Iced coffee. I’m not a regular coffee drinker, but I love iced coffee in the summer.
– Instagram. I’ve been following some cute foster kittens
– Kindle App. I’ve started reading the Outlander series and it’s great to have it on my phone instead of lugging a big book around.
Happy Monday!

1. Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
Recently I’ve been concentrating on really getting my skin to look as beautiful as possible so I’ve been going totally makeup free and love it!
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
Yes 🙁
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
I’ve tried several of the typical white mascara primers and don’t really think they’ve ever done anything spectacular.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
I’ve never been a fan of espadrilles and just in the last couple years have actually come across a few pairs of gladiators that I don’t mind.
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
– Reading, I love to read but got lazy and wasn’t reading for the last while.
– Warm weather. Living in Calgary we tend to have snow for at least 8 months a year so I’m sucking in every second of warm weather I can while it’s here.
– Fresh local produce because of the warmer weather. I pretty much live on Raspberries, Watermelon and Cucumber during the summer.
– Boot Camp. I started taking a workout boot camp class once a week that has been kicking my ass big time, but as the weeks go by I’m getting through it a little easier and am loving it.
– Jealous Body Scrub. It’s a Canadian company out of BC that makes an all natural Coffee body scrub. They smell so yummy and leave my skin feeling so good and looking beautiful. I’ve tried every body scrub I’ve ever come across and this one is by far the best ever! I’ve already ordered more for me and for my sisters in Toronto.
Karen says
Hi Carolyn,
Wow, I can’t believe you guys have snow for that much time! I take it you’re a snow person and do a lot of snow-related activities?
Have a great week! 🙂

3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
I don’t like the idea of extra lash stuff. I don’t like mascara much to begin with!
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
Gladiator shoes, I GUESS.
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?

Hi Holly!
I’m with you on air conditioned spaces, LOL! Our AC is broken, so when it gets to hot I go to places with AC.
I hope you had a nice weekend. 🙂
Holly says
My weekend was quite relaxing, thanks, and I hope you enjoyed yours!
I check your blog daily even though I don’t comment all the time. I really enjoyed your New Orleans pictures; it’s one of the places to visit on my (unwritten) bucket list.
Karen says
Hi Holly,
It was super chill. I went to my parents’ house for a BBQ on the fourth and then just chilled on Sunday.
Oh, and thank you for reading the blog! 🙂 I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed the NOLA pics. I hope that you make it out there someday and eat lots and lots of beignets! Then you can send me pics and I can drool over them. lol

1. Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
I’m usually working on the weekends ; so I have a full face on, but when I’m not, I keep it simple with bareMinerals Complexion Rescue and bareMinerals Stroke of Light for my complexion. I like a matte look ; so I top those off with bareMinerals Illuminating Mineral Veil. I do my brows with Anastasia’s Dipbrow. I don’t do much with my eyes, but I use bareMinerals 5-in-1 in Barely Nude, followed by a couple of coats of mascara. For my cheeks I use NARS Blush in Orgasm. It’s always my go-to blush. I’m a Chapstick girl ; so Cake Batter Chapstick is my lip’s best friend. 🙂 There are some days though where all I will wear is bareMinerals Complexion Rescue and that is it !
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
Yes. I do all the time. It seems like I’m more picky about my right nostril though. -_-
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
I’ve actually never tried it, but now I want to ! Totally going to look into it as soon as I’m done filling this out.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
Gladiators all the way ! I actually just ordered a pair of knee high ones. I like wearing them because they are simple and comfy. I feel they can tie together any look.
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
• Detox water ! I make mine using water, cucumber, lemon, orange, and mint. I’m hooked on it and it’s very refreshing for the summer. 🙂
• Hiking ! Lately I’ve been enjoying the outdoors more and it also gives me time to practice my photography skills.
• Graphic Design ! It has always been my passion and I put it to the side after I started working for bareMinerals, but lately my boyfriend has been inspiring me to start back up again and make a career out of it. 🙂 ❤
• Sapphire ( blue/black ) hair ! I’ve been rocking it for he past couple of months, even though I’m itching to go back platinum blonde.
• Quesadillas ! My staple food at the moment. YUM !
Much love to you and Tabs ! ❤
Karen says
Sending you lots of love from me and Tabs!
P.S. How long have you been with bareMinerals? And what are your favorite products from the line?
Crystal says
Hi ! Sorry for the delayed reply. I’ve been a busy bee this past week.
I’ve been with bareMinerals since November 2014. I never thought I would be doing makeup for a living because I’ve always been a freelance graphic designer. My best friend is the assistant manager of the boutique here and asked me if I wanted to come work for the holidays since she knew I was good with makeup. I said why not ? I was hired on the spot and I haven’t looked back since. It’s an amazing company to work for. They treat us well and it’s awesome makeup ! 🙂
My favorite product is the Stroke of Light Eye Brightener. It works wonders on me. I’m also in love with our Active Cell Renewal Serum. I can tell a difference in my skin if I skip a day ( or night ) of not using it. I’m also a fan of our brushes. They just came out with a new line of them and they have up’d their game since their last brushes. They are launching a new concealer ( that follows along the bareSkin line ) this fall. I got to play with it at academy and I’m so excited for it to come out because it is one of the best concealers I’ve ever used !
Happy Sunday to you and Tabs ! ❤
Ashleigh says
1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
BB cream and SPF, some highlighter (probably too much), a coral cheek and a light bronze, basic champagne neutral eye and mascara. ^_^ Bright lip optional.
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)? I think so?
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated? I used to use one a looong time ago and loved it, but it was white so I stopped using it because it was a pain to cover up precisely.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.) Espadrilles! There’s nothing like transporting you to the Mediterranean like a cute pair of espadrilles.
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
Vlogs
Bing cherries
trying out different coffees and ciders
Not having to deal with 3 feet of snow (YAY)
Outdoor walks and runs
Karen says
Hi Ashleigh!
I hope you had a wonderful weekend. Was your dog OK with the fireworks? They’re not allowed where I live (but people still do them here and there) so Tabs wasn’t too freaked out.
Ashleigh says
Yes, I did enjoy the weekend! Thank you 🙂
He was fine with the fireworks indoors. I made the mistake one year of bringing him to a 4th of July party where some fireworks were lit off in the backyard, and he ran like the wind into their master bedroom to hide under the bed! People were lighting them off all week in our neighborhood, luckily he didn’t seem bothered.
Tabs probably thought they were celebrating his glorious reign over the nation, and allowed such antics with minimal disdain. 😉
Karen says
Oh I’m glad to hear that he wasn’t too scared! 🙂
Haha, that’s so true about Tabs… Right now he’s in his cat tower, looking over the living room like a bored king. LOL. Actually I think it might be exhaustion, because he’s been staying up all night long, running around and chasing who knows what!
Enjoy your Tuesday!
Stacey says
1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
Almost bare faced. Mostly have just been wearing primer and a little lip gloss. Too hot and humid out for much else.
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
Yes there was one day where I noticed that I had a couple of hairs on one side that insisted on pointing straight down so they stuck out just far enough to be noticeable. Those got trimmed right away.
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
I would only use it with colored mascaras as sometimes I have a hard time getting them to really pop.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
Gladiator shoes
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
Tank tops (year round staple here in sunny Mesa, AZ), lip balm that comes in a pot or tin, Chamomile tea, black light flashlight (have to keep an eye out for scorpions), and spray on sunscreen.
Karen says
Hi Stacey,
Oh, speaking of tank tops, I just picked up couple of nice ones on sale from Old Navy! Do you live near a store? They’re called the Relaxed Slub Knit Tanks. Super soft and only $12! I got mine in store for $4 because they were on sale.
And eeek! Scorpions!
Stacey says
I’m sure there’s one nearby. Will have to check those out the next time I need some more tank tops.
Karen says
I just did a post on the $12 tanks. 🙂 If you go to the store you might even be able to find them for less.
Happy shopping!
Amy says
1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
Very minimal! Gloss (buxom tingly stuff),a little concealer (benefit), illuminating moisture Bb cream or something else glowy, a little becca highlighter, blush (Mac).
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
Sure, occasionally. With a battery-powered trimmer. No going back!
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
Never used it! You’re convincing me I should, though. 🙂
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
Espadrilles! So cute. Have to find comfy ones though, which isn’t always easy.
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
HelloFresh, mounds of huge fresh organic blueberries (can you tell I’m obsessed!), Open windows, becca moonstone, sparkly silver pedicure!
Thanks for another fun poll, Karen! Your croissant looks killer. I had a decaf and a chocolate chunk scone today. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Amy,
I’ve yet to enter the batter powered trimmer world! Someday, though. I love me some beauty gadgets, LOL!
Have a great week. 🙂
Amy says
It saves so much time! My husband got me hooked. Crazy huh!
You have great week, too. I just made a summer salad entree I think you might like: farro with chunks of watermelon, chicken, blueberries, cukes, mozzarella cheese, candied pecans, onions, basil, and vinaigrette. So inspiring I had to share.
Karen says
I use this weird rounded scissor contraption… It’s probably not the most efficient method but eh, it works. LOL!
Umm, that salad sounds AMAZING! What did you put in the vinaigrette?
Amy says
It was ridiculously satisfying. Very simple vinaigrette, just olive oil and balsamic vinegar, a little pepper. You could just use TJ’s in a bottle! The salad is so flavorful it doesn’t need much!
Karen says
I’ve been craving salads lately and yours sounds so tasty! Gonna have to go get some farro now!
Speaking of TJ’s, have you ever had their canned smoked trout?
Rachel R. says
1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look. The same as my everyday work, since I work from home. I change things up all the time. It’s been really hot lately, so I’ve pared the makeup down some.
The last couple weekends it’s been sunscreen, mattefying balm primer, CC cream or loose mineral foundation, mineral veil powder, a little bit Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil Bronzer, blush (usually coral), highlighter, e.l.f. Mist & Set. On my eyes: Always primer. I’ve been sticking to nudes on the really hot day, and skipping eyeliner. Two coasts of mascara, always. Lip balm, lipliner, bright lip.
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)? Not yet
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated? In between. I don’t think it’s a necessity most of the time. A good primer can give a lot of oomph, though.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.) Espadrilles. My legs are too chunky to pull of gladiators. (Gladiators are cooler looking, though.)
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
1) ColourPop Birthday Girl eyeshadow (great on the lids with the nude eye looks).
2) Air conditioning
3) Fresh cherries
4) Maxi skirts and dresses
5) My magenta hair

I hope you had a nice Fourth, Rachel! Was the bunny ok? Tabs really didn’t freak out because fireworks are illegal in our county (although that doesn’t stop people…I heard them all throughout the night).
Rachel R. says
Our 4th was great. I hope yours was, too. I’m so glad to hear Tabs was fine. We brought the bunny inside for the night, and he didn’t seemed bothered by any booms from outside (illegal fireworks here, too, of course). We stick with boring legal fireworks, which don’t make much noise. No whistling ones. Padfoot the Bunny was very happy to get back outside the next morning, nonetheless. 🙂
Karen says
It was! El Hub and I visited my parents in the East Bay and had a BBQ. It was fun and relaxing. 🙂 What did you guys do?
Aww, I’m glad to hear Padfoot the Bun wasn’t too traumatized. Does he stay in an enclosure outside?
Rachel R. says
We stayed home and grilled steaks and corn on the cob. My older son’s best friend came over (he’s like our third son). Did fireworks. The boys played video games. It was a nice, relaxing day.
We have a large rabbit run in our backyard, that goes the most of the width of the yard. He has a high fence, a shelter, toys, and food and water dispensers, and a big tree. The tree is home to the squirrel family. The oldest child squirrel is his best friend.
Indoors we have a large cage in my son’s room and a playpen for lousy weather/freezing cold days.
Karen says
Sounds like you guys had a lovely, relaxing weekend. Those are my favorite kinds of celebrations.
So, it sounds like Padfoot the Bunny has it made! What a life. 🙂 I’m sure he’s very happy (how could he not be when your BFF is a squirrel?).
Did I tell you that I did a little bunny sitting a couple weekends ago? I watched my neighbor’s bunny Zizzi. She was super cute and pretty friendly; she even let me pet her between the ears.

1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
Lately, it’s been bronze-y, pinky and maybe a hit of teal on the eyes with glossy lips. I’ve been loving mixing L’Oreal True Match Lumi with a bit of MAC Strobe Cream. I have an office job during the week (at a nonprofit, so considerably less stuffy than say a corporate job) but I use the weekends to go a little more cray with color and highlight.
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
Nope! Thank god I didn’t get that Greek gene!
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
Meh, I haven’t tried one I liked. I got sent a complimentary mascara primer from Mary Kay once but it irritated my eyes like whoa. Like I would put it on and my eyes would burn and tear up immediately. I am interested in the mascara fibers from Essence I think? It’s like a little jar of just the fibers to make your lashes longer/thicker before you apply mascara. I keep forgetting to look for it when I’m in Ulta.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
Espadrilles! Summer wedges are my <3
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
1) Nescafe Frappes http://www.openjourney.com/files/frappe-cc-wp.jpg It's the Greek version of iced coffee, but you have to use Nescafe instant coffee, preferably the Greek kind if you can find it. It's delicious! I even have an official Nescafe Frappe shaker.
2) MAC Strobe Cream. I got a sample bottle on my last MAC.com order and it's the best. I might splurge for a full-size when I finish this one.
3) The RuPaul station on Pandora. It's so much fun!
4) Mortified the Podcast. I had watched the documentary/movie on Netflix awhile back but they started a weekly podcast a few months ago. Basically, people volunteer to read excerpts from their journals from when they were adolescents/teens and it's hilariously embarrassing.
5) I just watched Nightcrawler last night on Netflix, it was really good! Very dark, but riveting and Jake Gyllenhaal is fantastic.
Karen says
Hi Kalli,
Strobe Cream is amazing! I’ve been using it for years and love it. Did you know that MAC occasionally puts out a golden bronzy version of it? I used it today, it’s called Strobe Liquid Lotion in Golden Elixir, and it’s amazeballs!
Kalli says
Ohhh yeah, I think I recall you mentioning the bronzey version on here at some point (I could be making it up, haha). I’ll keep an eye out for it! A while back, I did manage to score the MAC bronze loose shimmering powder like right before it got discontinued. I love that and the silver one too!
Karen says
I have both Silver Dusk and Golden Bronze LOVE them. I have absolutely no idea why they were discontinued because they’re so good!
Trude says
1. Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
My basic look, but with more eyeliner and a brighter lip. Unless I’m not going anywhere, then nothing. 😉
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
Nope, but I’m a natural strawberry blonde so prob just can’t see!
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
The volumizing ones I’ve tried in the past were more messy than helpful, but I’m open if I see one get a good review. But I kind of use one every day – It Cosmetic’s Tightline mascara, to get down into my blonde roots. It’s the best!
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
Well if I HAVE to, gladiator. But not the knee high ones. Looks cute on no one.
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
A white gummi bear from Jamba Juice (secret menu!), road trips with my man, the Hardcore History podcast, Pixi’s Glow Tonic (it’s made the biggest difference for my skin) and planning for the Renegade Fair in LA this weekend! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Trude,
The Glow Tonic sounds amazing. I just looked up the key ingredients and it sounds like something my skin might like. How long have you be using it?
Trude says
It’s been about 4 weeks now, and the other day when I woke up I suddenly realized my most pigmented spot from a recent breakout has faded considerably. I’ve been slowly adding in chemical exfoliants and switching up my routine a lot in the last 6 months, but the Glow Tonic has made the most visible difference. 🙂 I tried it after both Caroline Hirons and Tati/Glam Life Guru raved about it. And you get a TON of product! A few things from Peter Thomas Roth have really helped too, I keep meaning to blog about it!
Karen says
Amen to chemical exfoliators. They changed my life! I’ll have to grab a bottle when I swing by Target.
What items from PTR do you like?
Trude says
Just a heads up – they don’t carry it at Target! No idea why. 🙁 I wound up ordering it from Pixi’s website, because I wanted to start with a low glycolic percent to see how my skin would do. I’m glad I read the comments about sticking with it, because I was definitely extra dry with some flakiness the first week, and then GLORY HALLELUJAH! 😉
I’ve been using the Anti Aging Cleansing Gel and Firmx Peeling Gel. Not sure if I’ll repurchase the cleaning gel, but it’s a HUGE bottle so I’ve got a long time to decide. 🙂 And the peeling gel gets my skin so baby soft! Next I want to try the pumpkin mask or acid peel.

That croissant has me drooling. Ugh , it looks amaaazing
1. Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
I normally just put on some foundation and eyeliner and tinted lip balm. If I’m feeling adventurous, I do something really dramatic that I wouldn’t be able to wear to work.
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
Nope
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
I really haven’t had any good experiences with primers, I think I prefer investing in a good mascara instead if a primer
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
oooh um I think that espadrilles if they are wedges, but gladiators if they have to be flat
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
The white tea and ginger scent from bath and body works. The cafe rio caramel candies from trader joe’s, they are AMAZING, they are a combination of a coffee and caramel hard candy. Um, the NYX contour kit.. (any shades that are too light or too dark can be used as eyeshadow!) Ooh I got this new mug that is huge, perfect for a morning coffee. I’ve been loooviiiiiing that dessert gum, I can’t get enough!
xx,
India

1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
Pretty much my everyday makeup. Natural and light.
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
Honestly no!
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
I have never used it so I can’t say.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
Espadrilles. I have been loving the Tory burch ones I got a few months ago from Nordstrom!
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
1. Fresh flowers. I always have to have them in the house. They make me so happy, especially peonies!
2. Dawson’s Crewk reruns on abc family. I know but honestly it makes me so happy and nostalgic! It’s on weekdays at noon I’ve been recording it and watching it on lazy weekend mornings.
3 These gluten free chocolate chip cookies. Recipe is on my blog here…
http://www.saraelizabethfood.com/the-best-gluten-free-chocolate-chip-cookies
I have been trying to eliminate sugar, dairy and flour from my diet recently and these cookies are my fix! No refined sugar, no butter, no flour and they are amazing. Even my husband loves them. I make them basically every other day haha
4. The farmers market in my town. It started a couple weeks ago and it’s always the best part of summer for me. Every Friday afternoon I go down and get lots of fresh veggies and I just love it.
5. Essie’s Cajun Shrimp nail polish. I think I’m basically just wearing this one color alllll summer.

1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look. Super casual: Korres lip butter
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)? No, I have, however, plucked a hair growing out of the little section of nose between the nostrils. And man is that ever painful.
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated? Never tried it, I have super sensitive eyes so I try to limit what I put on my lashes
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.) Espadrilles for sure. I have large calves. Gladiator is not a look I can even think of pulling off (or rather putting on 🙂 )
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
Makeup For Ever Artist Plexi-Gloss #202
striping tape for doing nail designs
the ISE (one second everyday) app
Trader Joe’s coconut body butter
roasted marshmallows
Anastassia says
Lately I wear very little make up. Just a moisturizer and sun cream and a mascara and lip balm for the weekends.
I have never ever trimmed my nose hair yet. I never used mascara primer. I have to say that I don’t like both the options of gladiatior shoes and espadrilles but if I had to choose between these 2 I would go with the gladiatior shoes.
5 things I love right now:
Orlane cream for face. Garnier fructis oil for hair which makes it soft shiny and smells great and is good for protecting hair from sun. Decleor’s aromessence mandarin oil for face, lately I am addicted to the smell and how it makes my skin so soft.Salads instead of cooking a whole meal and the beach for relaxing and swimming and tanning.

Oooh, lucky you to have Rustic Bakery as your favorite local spot! I order their flatbreads and crostini online, as they are simply the best. Good for you, going barefaced. I feel like I put so much focus and work into my skincare; why cover that great result with anything? I work with clients in my Pilates studio, even on weekends, so here is my current product list:
Clear primer around nose, above lip and brows to help with sweatshine, illuminator or highlighter where I want it, lip balm or gloss, and then whatever I feel like putting on my eyes that day. I love creating a sparkly or contoured eye! ;{}
Suzanne says
1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
None! I don’t wear any unless I’m going out, in which case it’s pconcealer and setting powder, shimmery eyes, liner, lip colour. I don’t like blush anyway and I skip highlighter, brow filler and mascara on weekends.
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
Never! But I have a lone strand of hair on my jawline that reminds me that inside, I’m a hairy beast just waiting to get out.
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
Never tried it. I have plenty lashes though.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
Gladiators, because with four months of torrential rain in Mumbai I could live without espadrilles.
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
-MAC Flat Out Fabulous lipstick (I just did a Back2Mac today)
-My tailor who makes very va-va-voom 60’s dresses that always get compliments from strangers.
-Tomatoes. I could eat 6 in a row (and I have) like they’re apples. I’ve been loving your tomato growing adventures by the way!
-Crocs. When it rains as much as it does in Mumbai, and it’s a walking-around city, you’ll love them too. I have a pretty pink ballet flat-type style.
-Ira Levin’s A Kiss Before Dying. It marked the 30th book I’ve read since the year began (I know!) and I can’t get over how smoothly diabolical the plot was!

Thanks for sharing about the nail clippers! I love looking at peoples’ favorites’ lists–you never know what can make life that much more amazing.
1.Describe your typical weekend makeup look.
No makeup-makeup with a pop of lipstick–and that’s only for work. If I’m going out, I might go heavier on eyes and lips after work. For Sunday, I try to go makeup free unless there’s an event.
2. Have you ever trimmed your nose hair (be honest!)?
Yup. I do this occasionally. Both nostrils unfortunately every couple of weeks. This is THE downside of having lots of hair that grows fast that no one talks about.
3. Mascara primer: totally necessary or totally overrated?
Hmmm…I’ve never tried. Usually, if I want lash oomph I just go straight for falsies. I just checked out the review for the Estee Lauder one and those lashes are quite fantastic so I’ll have to keep it in mind.
4. Gladiator shoes or espadrilles? (P.S. “Neither” is not an option. You have to choose one.)
I’ve never worn either but I’d like to try Gladiators–straps can be fun.
5. 5 random things you’re loving right now?
My kate spade handbag
http://www.katespade.com/cedar-street-patent-small-pearl/PXRU5135,en_US,pd.html
I wanted a dressy and structured lady-like bag. This is IT! The shape is just so fun. It’s the first time I bought an upscale bag. I typically use light-weight nylon bags with tons of compartments but this is so awesome.
Breyer’s French Vanilla–which I’m enjoying right now.
Walking in a forest when it’s slightly overcast–so fresh and gorgeous.
Clinique Plum Pop lipstick! My sensitive lips can handle it so far so I might haul more!
The coastal sea breeze–this is always my favorite–has not changed.
