You might be wondering, “So what in tarnation is this Monday Poll thing anyway!?”
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past seven years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are…
A hair dryer and a curling iron. I have an ancient t3 hairdryer I’ve had since 2007 that I still use and absolutely adore. I remember it costing an arm and a leg, but that thing is my ride or die, for sure! It dries my hair in less time than any hairdryer I’ve had before. As for curling irons, I have a few of them that I rotate between, depending on the kind of hairstyle I’m going for, but lately I’ve been using my t3 Bodywaver more often than the others because of how great it gets that blown-out look with a round brush, without, ya know, me having to do the actual work.
- If I could give myself some advice today, I’d say…
Take it easy! — and don’t forget to take your breaks. I’ve been feeling a little anxious lately…I think because of hormones and just general pregnancy worry. - What was the last thing you baked?
I made some applesauce and almond butter pancakes yesterday to bring along as snacks when we visit my parents in the East Bay, and they’re super delish! They’re low in sugar and carbs (just a few grams from the applesauce and almond butter), so they’re an OK addition to ye olde gestational diabetes meal plan. You can have them for breakfast, like regular pancakes, but they’re one of my favorite afternoon and evening snacks. They’re yummy cold or warmed up in the microwave, and plain or topped with almond butter or peanut butter.
Sometimes, if I have a little extra room in my carb count, I’ll top them with a small amount of fruit, like a few blueberries or half a sliced banana.
And even if I wasn’t watching my carb count, they’re still delicious.
- What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail?
I’d try my hand at writing a young adult novel because I’d love for Baby Girl to be able to say, “My mommy writes books!” - I absolutely live for…
A great pair of shoes that also happen to be on sale. 🙂 Homegirl loves her footwear.
Your turn. 🙂 Just copy and paste the following questions into a comment with your answers. I look forward to reading ’em!

Only two more Mondays till 2016! Seriously, how did that even happen? Where does the time go…?
What did you do this weekend? If it involved last-minute Christmas shopping or watching the new Star Wars movie, we’re twinsies.
Have a great week. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Jane says
So, mostly chilled this weekend. We had a family holiday party (my side) yesterday at my aunt and uncles about 1/2 hour north of us. So much fun to see the cousins and my sister. I got her a UD Naked Basics 2 palette. She’s off to see our parents in sunny Florida since the bakery she works at is closing for the holidays. My son saw Star Wars Friday night and came home practically speechless (with the expected AMAZING comment). My husband and I will probably see it over the holiday.
Anyway, I don’t bake, I dry my hair naturally, even in the colder weather, although it has been unseasonably warm out East. I always try to not sweat the little things and I’d like to try skiing, but I think I missed out.
finally, I just saw a blog that said Bobbi Brown is launching a new Skin Nourishing Foundation sometime in the new year. I love her foundation. I hope it is more reasonable than the Serum one. Anyway, enjoy the holidays!
Karen says
Hi Jane,
How nice of you to get your sister a UD Naked Basics 2 Palette! I think it’s one of those unsung heroes and I’m sure she’ll love it.
One thing I love about Bobbi’s foundation is the color range. I’m hoping that this new one will have lots of colors, too!

I think it’s wonderful that you ride, Bree! Learning to ride horses is definitely on my bucket list. How long have you been doing it?
Bree says
Thanks. Pretty much since I could sit up. I probably started riding by myself when I was about 3. I train and compete in barrel racing.
Rachel R. says
1. Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are… I don’t use many. I occasionally use a Bed Head Deep Waver or my beyond ancient hairdryer.
2. If I could give myself a little advice today, I’d say… Remember your Hitchhiker’s Guide To the Galaxy and DON’T PANIC. I’ve been really anxious and overwhelmed this holiday season.
3. What was the last thing you baked? I helped hubby make banana bread. By myself…I think biscuits.
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail? Writing children’s books.
5. I absolutely live for… my kids. Whenever I feel like giving up and hiding under a rock for the rest of my life, I pull it together for them.
Karen says
Hi Rachel R.,
Oh, I’m so sorry about the anxiety. I’ve had some too for the past few months (I think it’s hormone related). I started doing an exercise that my brother taught me that’s helped me a lot. When I start to feel anxious and overwhelmed about things that I have to do, I close my eyes, take a few deep breaths, and concentrate on where I am at that very moment and focus on the concrete details. For example, if I was anxious right now, I’d think to myself, “I’m here, I’m in my office. Tabs is next to my desk taking a nap, El Hub is downstairs on his computer. I feel safe inside my house. It’s raining outside. It’s Monday afternoon, and the only thing I have to do at this very moment is finish this quick note to Rachel.” It sounds silly, but it works! I think it’s because it forces me to really focus on that moment, and to not get overwhelmed by what’s ahead.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you that things go smoothly over the rest of the holidays!
Rachel R. says
Thanks, mine is partially hormonal, as well. PMS and fluctuating hormones from being perimenopausal.
I also have severe anxiety disorder, though medication helps. Holidays bring up bad childhood crap. I try stay to take calming breaths, distract myself, and listen to music.
Yesterday we saw the new Star Wars movie. I was pleasantly surprised. I thought they did a pretty good job with it.
Daniela says
1. Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are…
My fingers, my hair is currently pretty short so no big styling sessions necessary
2. If I could give myself a little advice today, I’d say…
Don’t eat so many christmas cookies…
3. What was the last thing you baked?
Well… long story. About 5 weeks ago I joined a christmas cookies baking session (my mum was laughing hard, because I’m not much into house work/cooking/baking..). So two weeks ago I tried two of the recipes, and especially the vanilla-almond-cookies were great and also fun to make. The dough was really buttery but I followed the courses tips. So yesterday I thought about bringing some cookies for my family this Thursday(christmas in Germany starts on the 24th) . I doubled the recipe, as only the egg yolks were needed I had the egg white for breakfast. I checked the butter and weighed everything.
Then in the afternoon I made the cookie dough. And while mixing and kneading the ingredients I was wondering because the dough was so dry and didn’t mix. So I added some liquids and more flour. The cookies still were okay and I packed some for my colleagues and they loved them. And then I found a packet of butter in the fridge that should have gone into the recipe!!!
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail?
Learning to play the piano..
5. I absolutely live for…
good question, I have to think about it for the rest of the week…
Have a great week and a wonderful christmas everyone!
@Karen: Next year will be totally different when baby girl is in town!!!
Karen says
Hi Daniela,
You have a wonderful Christmas too! 🙂
I’m looking forward to her being around for the holidays… I can’t wait to dress her up and to spoil her to pieces.
LisaN says
1. Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are… Besides my Hair Dryer, I am in love with my Ionic Ceramic Hot Brush. I saw a similar product by Amika, but wasn’t willing to shell out that much money if I wasn’t sure if it would perform well. It’s a great way for a lazy girl to smooth out her hair, and give it bounce. I still break out my styling wand though if I want a ‘real’ hair-do.
2. If I could give myself a little advice today, I’d say…
Breathe. Xmas is right around the corner, and your all set.
3. What was the last thing you baked?
Pizza Bread. My husband and his bud’s love this stromboli like creation I whip up for Football Sunday’s.
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail?
Open a bookstore/coffee/lunch shop. I always thought it would be a nice combination, and I live in a cute little southern town that would be perfect for it!
5. I absolutely live for…
My 2 rescue dogs. They make me smile every day 🙂
Karen says
Aww, Lisan. Rescues are the best fur kids. 🙂 Tabs is a rescue, and he makes every day that much brighter.
Happy holidays!
Erin says
1. Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are…
A T-shirt! It’s what I use as a towel for my hair. Really cuts down frizz.
2. If I could give myself a little advice today, I’d say…
Don’t forget to do your laundry before anything else. I have nothing to wear to the doctors office now… UG!
3. What was the last thing you baked?
I’m baking a pizza right now, does that count? If it’s sweets only, an apple crisp on Thanksgiving!
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail?
Something hella dangerous like skydiving. If I wouldn’t fail or have a heart attack, I’d be more daring!
5. I absolutely live for…
My pets! They keep me going no matter how bleak my life gets!
Karen says
Fur babies are the best!
Jennifer says
1. Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are…I too have a T3 hairdryer that I can’t live without. I’ve been letting my hair get a bit longer so while I’m doing my face in the morning and driving to work I usually twist it up in one of those clips, I don’t know what they’re called but they have a claw. Then I take it out when I get to work and I have a little bit of extra bounce.
2. If I could give myself a little advice today, I’d say…take ten minutes to troubleshoot the internet router and check its age. Our connection has been super slow lately and our company says its the same as it ever was but it’s been a real struggle lately to stream netflix and hulu plus.
3. What was the last thing you baked? Toffee Snickerdoodle cookies for the Great Food Blogger Cookie Swap of 2015. I was trying to replicate Starbuck’s Toffeedoodle cookies and was not successful.
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail? Create a beauty empire.
5. I absolutely live for…espresso.
Karen says
Do those Nespresso machines count as espresso? I saw a new store at the mall the other day and was so tempted by everything in there, oy!
Grace says
1. Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are…
Depends on how my roots are looking.. if on oily side, I spray some dry shampoo.. if I am looking for some volume, I mist a bit of thickening spray.. I have a sample from Bumble and Bumble, but I don’t think it’s any different from a regular hairspray.
If I need to get my fancy pants on, then I’ll make curls/waves with a straightening iron.
2. If I could give myself some advice today, I’d say…
Stop being so hard on yourself, but then again, maybe I’m not being hard enough cuz then I’d get stuff done!
3. What was the last thing you baked?
Banana choco chip muffins. I’m not a baker, but I can make Banana muffins in my sleep. I love using really ripe bananas, because then I don’t have to add any sugar as I find the bananas make it sweet enough for me.
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail?
Probably open a bakery, but I can’t really bake so hmm.. but you said it wouldn’t fail, right? >P
5. I absolutely live for…
CAKE. That cup above speaks to me haha.. I saw that same Kate Spade design for an iPad case, and was soo tempted to get it! But I’m the type of person who should not own designer goods, cuz I totally suck at taking the extra time to keeping it clean and looking designer.
Merry Christmas to you Karen, it will be the last as a 3 member family 🙂
Karen says
Merry Christmas to you too, Grace! Next year I’ll have to put another stocking up, woo hoo! 🙂
I hope that your holidays are filled with lots of fun and lots of cake (OF COURSE). Speaking of cake, what’s your favorite? Right now I’m craving carrot cake, om nom nom.
Sandy P says
1. Tools I use…since I have short hair I usually just need a comb and a very old hair dryer. Sometimes I will use a curling iron. I prefer to just go with an easy hair style though.
2. Advice for today…I would share what my Grandma preached. She said 97% of the things we worry about never happen.
3. The last thing I baked was cinnamon rolls. Not baking for the holidays as I fell and injured my tailbone right before Thanksgiving. Not fun!
4. What would I try if I couldn’t fail…go back to college and get a degree since I only have an AA. Of course the money would have to be available too. But I would also like to learn to paint too!!
5. I absolutely live for…family! But first coffee ?
Karen, hope you and El Hub have a Merry Christmas. And take a nap everyday now until March.
Karen says
Hi Sandy,
I’m definitely taking the napping part to heart and sneaking them in when I can. 🙂
If I don’t talk to you before then, have a very Merry Christmas! 🙂 What are your plans for the holidays, by the way? Will you be staying local or traveling?
Sandy says
Hey Karen,
We are going south…..4 hours from West Michigan (very near the beaches of Lake Michigan) down to the Indianapolis area. Our daughter and her family live there. We are having such a warm winter that right now it is far enough south.

Stephanie Smith says
1. Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are…a claw clip. I had ridiculously long hair that I need to cut, so it’s up in a clip most of the time.
2. If I could give myself a little advice today, I’d say…deep breaths. It’s not worth the stress.
3. What was the last thing you baked? Chocolate chip pumpkin bread for my 4th grader’s Christmas party at school.
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail? Write a mystery novel. It might happen anyway, why not?
5. I absolutely live for…Peppermint Mocha Frappiccinos!
I did do last minute Christmas shopping and watched the new “Star Wars” movie this weekend! Loved both of them!!!
Karen says
Yay, we’re twinsies! Did ya get all of your shopping done? I’m finally done, hooray!
Kelly says
1. Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are…
Tool-wise, only a hairbrush. If you’re talking products, I use agave oil to give my thick hair some hydration. If I’m looking to add some texture/volume, one of my fav things to use is a leave in conditioner. 🙂
2. If I could give myself a little advice today, I’d say…
Relax. I have a very busy schedule this week, and today is my one day off before Disneyland, family movie day, Christmas Eve festivities, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. So I’m hoping to soak up this relaxation time!
3. What was the last thing you baked?
My holiday Triple Chocolate Pudding Cookies. These are ahhmazing, and so easy to make! My friends and relatives demand I make them every year, it’s now a holiday tradition.
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail?
Become a beauty vlogger. I’m already a blogger, but I would love to make it onto youtube. While it seems attainable, my social anxiety prohibits me from starting a channel. I’m just too self conscious. 🙁
5. I absolutely live for…
art. Makeup, paintings, drawings, sculptures, photos, even bath art! I can’t imagine a world without it.
Karen says
Hi Kelly,
OK, now you’ve gotta share that cookie recipe. It sounds amazing!
Efrain says
Hi Karen I hope everything is going really well this Monday at Casa MBB. I’ve just arrived from Cuautla where it was my aunt’s wedding and her daughter’s “Quince años” (I think in English you’d say Quinceañera party, but correct me).
1. Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are…
I rarely use the hair drier and only if my hair hasn’t really completely dry.
2. If I could give myself a little advice today, I’d say…
Let things happen (I was accepted in Spain but it seems I didn’t win a scholarship, so it’s going to be difficult to go).
3. What was the last thing you baked?
Brownies, and they were tasty. This time I used baby food (dried prune) instead of a lot of butter.
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail?
Create my own make up or skincare line. I’m pretty sure you’ll be an awesome writer so you must bit the bullet.
5. I absolutely live for…
Eating good food, last month I watched Chef with my family and they couldn’t believe how my mouth watered while watching the food.
Karen says
Hi Efrain,
Yes, I think it’s called an Quinceañera in English! How did the party go? Were you part of the court?
Oh, that’s great about getting into that program. Sorry though that you didn’t get the scholarship. At least you got in, right? Some people don’t even have that option.
P.S. I drooled over the grilled cheese sandwich part in Chef. 🙂
Efrain says
She didn’t have court, in fact I’ve never seen a quinceañera with one. I even think it’s something only latinos in the US do, here they have “chambelanes” a group of dancers who dances with her through the waltz and the modern music choreography.
The party was OK I’d have preferred more music to dance; I think the wedding had better music.
I know about Spain, I’d see what I can do if nothing favorable appears I’d stay here.
You also drooled with that scene? I was all about the Cuban sandwich *wants to eat one*.
Chelsea says
1. Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are…
My hands? I don’t even brush my hair often to be honest!
2. If I could give myself a little advice today, I’d say…
Do some laundry!
3. What was the last thing you baked?
I tried to make these healthy muffins, but they were all goopy in the middle.
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail?
Moving to France!
5. I absolutely live for…
naps!
Karen says
Sorry to hear about your healthy muffins! Speaking of healthy baking, I just found a site that you might like called Chocolate Covered Katie. Have you heard of it? She does lots of healthy desserts and breakfast foods!
Chelsea says
I’ll have to check that out!
The sad thing about these particular muffins is that the first time I made them, they turned out absolutely perfectly, perfect cake-like texture, but each subsequent time I’ve tried to make them, I’ve messed up. I keep trying again!
Allison C says
1. Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are…blowdryer and flat iron. I can’t live without my flat iron. And from the looks of photos taken before I bought a flat iron, I shouldn’t have had any photos taken.
2. If I could give myself a little advice today, I’d say try to be optimistic!
3. What was the last thing you baked? brownies
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail? ski
5. I absolutely live for…lipstick, macaron and homemade marshmallows
Karen says
GIRL, I know that feeling. In the ’90s when there were no flat irons I used to straighten my hair with a iron. LIKE THE KIND YOU USE FOR CLOTHES.
Kate & Zena says
Long time, no writing! I’ve been busy doing horse lessons and wrapping gifts (and taking care of ol’ Zeebs!)
1. Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are…
Um, my fingers? Yea, we’ll go with that! I’m very not into heat tools!
2. If I could give myself a little advice today, I’d say…

3. What was the last thing you baked?
Eh. Um. Well. Um. I don’t remember. It’s been a while.
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail?
Dressage or reining. I’m almost to jumping so I would have said that but I want to fail in order to light my fire for that.
5. I absolutely live for…horse lessons on Wednesdays! Scooby is so much fun! Oh, and massages on Thursdays. Ahhhhhhh.
Karen says
Hi Kate & Zena,
Good to hear from you both! So tell me about your horse lessons. They sound like so much fun.
Maggie says
1. Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are… a KISS handleless hair dryer. I bought it BC it looked easy to travel with but it’s now my go-to dryer BC it’s lightweight. Wish it had a few more options but won’t complain BC of the price.
2. If I could give myself a little advice today, I’d say…carpe diem! Lots to do that I have been putting off.
3. What was the last thing you baked? Egg muffins
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail?
Mountain climbing. The idea of falling scares me but if I KNEW I could not fall, I would try that.
5. I absolutely live for…food!
Karen says
Hi Maggie,
What are egg muffins? Are they eggs baked in a muffin tin? I made something similar to that last week with eggs, broccoli and cheddar cheese.
Maggie says
Oh yumm…broccoli and cheddar cheese. Yeah, that’s the gist of it. Sometimes I mix in chives or garlic powder too and whatever I got on hand

Play the lottery!

Happy holidays!

Karen says
Hi Sara,
I hope you and your little one have a wonderful Christmas. 🙂 How are you doing these days? Feeling ok?
Sara says
I’m feeling great thanks! I just started feeling her move a couple weeks ago, I love it:)
LindaLibraLoca says
1. Other than a hair brush (or comb), the hair styling tools I use most often are…
My ghd flat iron. I use it to curl my hair, but to be honest, I don’t do that very often.
2. If I could give myself a little advice today, I’d say…
..stop worrying. Everything will be fine. I worry about money, about life with two kids, about getting back to work, about moving, about my weight, about… everything. Even though I have done it all before.
3. What was the last thing you baked?
Cookies called “Heidesand” after a recipe from my husbands grandmother. He asks for them every Christmas.
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail?

5. I absolutely live for…
Morning cuddles with my daughter. I hope we will have them for a long time.
Merry Christmas, Karen.

3. What was the last thing you baked? Christmassy cupcakes with ginger and orange. Yummy!
4. What’s something you’d try doing if you knew you couldn’t fail? I would try to get into a prestigious university in USA.
