You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- What was the highlight of your weekend?
Honestly, the whole weekend was a highlight. 🙂 It’s been ages since I’ve gone on a trip with my good friend Cindy (probably seven or eight years!), and it was nice spending so much time with her. It was also refreshing to be able to spend long, uninterrupted stretches of time at the beach, and then by a pool, time to just sit and “be” with my thoughts. I’m still a little tired, because Cindy’s a snorer and we shared rooms (sorry, girl, but you are!), but I’m happy, and that’s the best. - When was the last time you taught someone something?
Last Saturday afternoon. I was hanging out at Hotel La Jolla’s saltwater pool and got roped into playing a game of water Horse basketball with a couple of random guys. We got to talking about what we all do, and I mentioned that I wrote about makeup and beauty. Those poor, poor dudes probably learned more than they bargained for about guy-liner, mint accessories, braids and big brows. - Do you ever download apps to your phone? Favorite ones?
Sometimes, but not often. Mostly blogging apps, like the official WordPress for iOS app, which is great for writing posts from beaches and pools, and social networking apps for Instagram. Oh, and the Nordstrom and Cat-O-Matic apps. - What do you do when you feel overwhelmed?
If I’m in a position where I can cry…that’s usually what I do first. For me, shedding a few quick tears usually helps with the emotional release, and then I start making lists, like a list of everything I need/want to get done. If I’m somewhere I don’t want to cry (like, surrounded by strangers), then I’ll try to find a quiet place for a few minutes to slow down my breathing and gather myself. Then I’ll write my list. - Do the men (or women) in your life use moisturizer and sunscreen?
El Hub is notorious for refusing to go along with the moisturizing and sunscreen agenda I’ve set for him. 🙁 - What should you do next/after this?
Work out. I haven’t gone running or done anything cardio (I don’t think surfing the way I do it really counts) since last week, and I’ve got to get my wiggles out. - Which makeup video or tutorial has been the most helpful one in the world for you?
I can’t think of just one right now, but I always learn new things from the lovely Lisa Eldridge and the Pixiwoo gals… I adore their accents. Plus, they seem like they’d be cool to hang out with. - Overalls and dungarees? Yea or nay?
NO NO NO NO NO - Do you ever wear metallic eyeshadow? Favorite ways?
Oh, for sure. With high-shine metallics, I think a little goes a long way. I pat ’em on my lids, and swipe along my lower lash line. For contrast, I’ll sweep a matte or satin into my crease. - What’s one nail art design you’ve wanted to/would try?
My friend Keri B. over at Nail Art Junkie recently did a really cool ikat leopard print design that I absolutely love. Cat lady says WHAT!

1. What was the highlight of your weekend?
I went floating do the river on an inner tube…two days in a row! Floating the river is a big recreation thing in my city and the water was packed both days. But it was a blast. On the second day, there was even a guy with an acoustic guitar, on an inner tube in the water, singing songs. Good times.

Well… I recently sort of taught my mom how to run. We did a 5K together and everything.

Polka dots. I tried it a few weeks ago and they just looked like wonky splotches. I’ll have to try again!

1. What was the highlight of your weekend?
I’m fasting for Ramadan, so the constant weakness due to lack of food & water makes me not see any highlights other than how much we take food and water for granted!
Otherwise- cooking a bit, and getting mani/pedis with a friend
2. When was the last time you taught someone something?
I have a teenage sister and a 10 year old cousin so I assume i get a chance to teach them something every time I see them. Probably not so much my sister anymore as she is a raging teenager who basically refuses to listen to anyone but my cousin is still young and impressionable.
3. Do you ever download apps to your phone? Favorite ones?
All the time! Love iHeartRadio because it lets me listen to my hometown morning radio show (Elvis Duran); Plague is a really fun end of the world type game; can’t live w/o Twitter; and Stitcher or iTunes for podcasts. Also love Umano- it reads articles to you (real person, but a robot voice)- great for in the car or going to sleep or- anytime your hands are busy!

Not really. I have a few shadows that say they are metallic but the finish doesn’t seem like it to me.

Not sure. I have a Konad stamping kit so I do my own nail designs at home.

3. Do you ever download apps to your phone? Favorite ones? YES! I love apps, but I try not to get too many, because I don’t to scroll though pages and pages of apps on my phone! 10. What’s one nail art design you’ve wanted to/would try? I loooove to paint my nails, but I am NOT a nail art kind of girl. I find it kind of tacky. For me. But I love it on other people. 1. What was the highlight of your weekend?
Oh, it was a lazy weekend, but I was SOOOO glad to see my bro& sis-by-law. (my husband’s brother and his wife.) She and I are like long lost sisters from other misters. We just get each other, and I miss her dearly. We used to live an hour away, but then The Man and I had to move here. 🙁 Was so glad that they drove down to the desert to see fam and to chit-chat a bit with me. 🙂
2. When was the last time you taught someone something?
I don’t usually teach. I find it frustrating because I feel like no one really listens. But, I was a teacher’s assistant until January 2010. So, I guess that was the last time, I can remember, that I taught anything. My nephews live far away, so I don’t really get a chance to teach kids anything.
3. Do you ever download apps to your phone? Favorite ones?
I like free apps 🙂 The last one I downloaded was…..a Paleo or Crossfit app. I don’t think I really utilize them, though. My favourite ones are Poshmark (bad browsing habit), Waze, Picstitch, and justWink (greeting card app!).
4. What do you do when you feel overwhelmed?
Like you, I cry. I’m just a cry baby. Upset, happy, frustrated, sad, I just cry. Or I’ll sidetrack and clean or organize stuff. That usually calms me down and makes me feel better. And then I try to get back to what I was supposed to do. 🙂
5. Do the men (or women) in your life use moisturizer and sunscreen?
I just got The Man to use a face moisturizer with sunscreen. It had to have SPF because he doesn’t like to get darker, and it is unscented because I knew he wasn’t going to be keen on any scents. LoL. And my sister still doesn’t really use moisturizer with SPF. I scold her everytime, but she still won’t listen. *sigh* She’s my older sis, and it irks me that I do all this stuff to protect my skin, but she still looks younger than me. grrrr. LoL
6. What should you do next/after this?
I was going to vacuum and do my weekly cleaning. Then clear out UN-needed stuff, find more clothes/accessories to post on Poshmark, work out, and study. *sigh* I’m so behind.
7. Which makeup video or tutorial has been the most helpful one in the world for you?
I don’t watch makeup video tutorials. I want to, but I need an actual person to help me, so I can figure a better way to do things. And, so they can correct me. 🙂 I’m an old soul who wants to refuse the modern ways. 😀
8. Overalls and dungarees? Yea or nay?
nay? nay. Dungarees remind me of my dad. He was in the Navy and he had to wear the dungarees with blue button ups, for work. So when I hear “dungaree” I think Navy. Too bad they don’t have that uniform anymore.
9. Do you ever wear metallic eyeshadow? Favorite ways?
I don’t wear eyeshadow. I’m still putting off a trip to the MAC counter. 🙁 I’ll probably go after August. So close, and so far away!
10. What’s one nail art design you’ve wanted to/would try?
My niece had a simple polka dot design. It was classy, yet wild, at the same time. I haven’t painted my nails in a while, so I might give it a shot. 🙂
Happy Monday, Karen! Hope Tabs got over your weekend getaway absence, and has resumed talking to you 🙂 La Jolla looked like a lovely weekend. 🙂
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
1. What was the highlight of your weekend?
We went for an evening walk around a nearby lake and the sunset was AHHHMAZING. The mountains were in front of the sun and there were these crazy fluffy clouds that reflected the most amazing colors. The moon was out at the same time so it was just surreal. One of those time that you just have to stop and appreciate the beauty. We even snapped some photos.
2. When was the last time you taught someone something?
I had to teach Hubby how to vacuum the other day…. sad I know. I’m too pregnant to haul the vacuum around and use the hose to get all the baseboards and corners so he had to do it for the first time since we moved in 4 years ago.
3. Do you ever download apps to your phone? Favorite ones?
I do but not too often. I love playing Tetris and I use my Kindle app from time to time if I forget to bring my Kindle with me.
4. What do you do when you feel overwhelmed?
Take a time out and read my book for a while. It helps to get outside my own head and focus on something else. Then I go back to the task at hand with fresh eyes.
5. Do the men (or women) in your life use moisturizer and sunscreen?
Yes! I’ve finally found some products Hubby likes and uses regularly. He only puts sunscreen on his face but that’s progress, right?
6. What should you do next/after this?
Take a shower.
7. Which makeup video or tutorial has been the most helpful one in the world for you?
I don’t really watch them.
8. Overalls and dungarees? Yea or nay?
Nay
9. Do you ever wear metallic eyeshadow? Favorite ways?
Yes but only for special occasions or with a dramatic cat look.
10. What’s one nail art design you’ve wanted to/would try?
I kind of like the ombre look but it looks too complicated for me.

Hi Leah,
Props to you for getting the hubby to even wear sunscreen. I can’t even get El Hub to stop using my shampoo as his body wash. 🙁
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
Karen, it took many years and a few bad sunburns to finally convince him! The random thing is that his favorite is just the basic Olay SPF15. Keep it simple is what seems to work the best.

1. What was the highlight of your weekend?
~Going to Bruster’s Ice Cream last night after work and going for a walk with the neighbors and their golden retriever, Frankie. Since I worked all weekend it was nice to have that kind of down time!
2. When was the last time you taught someone something?
~Today, helping a friend who has questions on various law enforcement processes. I try to learn something and/or teach someone something I’ve learned every day. If I had to learn it the hard way, why should I begrudge that info to someone else? I can give them the info and they can make their own decisions.
3. Do you ever download apps to your phone? Favorite ones?
~I have a Galaxy S4 and I love it. I have the Weather Bug app, which is more accurate than the Weather Channel, and I love my printer, Pinterest, and news apps. My phone came with the Amazon apps like Kindle, so I can read my books anytime without physically taking my Kindle everywhere. I only get free apps, unless there was something I really needed (like a video editing app or something).
4. What do you do when you feel overwhelmed?
~I used to get upset when I felt overwhelmed in private. In public, you could tell I was tense about something but I’d maintain a professional demeanor. In the past few years, I’ve learned how to handle things better. Do I still get overwhelmed at times? Yes, but I have better coping mechanisms, like planning things out in my phone/planner, stopping and thinking for a minute, and if I have time during the thing that’s overwhelming me, I will do yoga or run to release stress.
5. Do the men (or women) in your life use moisturizer and sunscreen?
~Yes, because hubby has realized how painful bad sunburns can be. I use it as well, because I don’t want a lot of skin damage from the sun.
6. What should you do next/after this?
~Probably work out again (did a hot run and glute exercise this morning), but I may relax since I worked all weekend and was busy all morning.
7. Which makeup video or tutorial has been the most helpful one in the world for you?
~Typically anything to do with hair, since I haven’t watched many makeup tutorials. I like to watch videos on different hairstyles because I have very thick hair and chances are someone has figured out how to work with their thick hair in a way I could practice. The most helpful tutorials have been for french braids and buns.
8. Overalls and dungarees? Yea or nay?
~On little kids and farmers, yes.
9. Do you ever wear metallic eyeshadow? Favorite ways?
~I love shadow with a metallic or shimmery edge. I rarely wear mattes, pretty much all of my shadows have some kind of glow or shimmer to enhance my green-gold hazel eyes.
10. What’s one nail art design you’ve wanted to/would try?
~Hmmmm…love that snakeskin one that was out a few years ago.

Hi Katherine,
I’ll have to look into videos for hair styles. I typically end up just doing the same things with my hair and would love to learn more intricate braids. So thanks for the idea to look more into those vids.
Do you have some time off this week since you worked all weekend? I hope so.
Katherine M says
Hello!
I do get some time off this week. Right now enjoying this nighttime thunderstorm we are getting after a week of no rain at all. As a kid, I never really knew what to make of my thick hair so I love videos or pictures now that give me good ideas or different ways of doing things. French braids are hard initially to do on yourself but I love them because they get all my layers up and out of the way. Enjoy the rest of your night and your week if we don’t talk in the comments!

Hi Alice Ann,
Fruit crisp, yum! What kind of fruit do you use? And what in it makes it magical?
Alice Ann says
I use whatever fruit is abundant at the farmer’s market, right now it’s all about stone fruit and strawberries. What makes it ‘magical’ is almond butter in the topping. I don’t use much sugar, and it just gives it a nice depth and richness. My parents really like it, and I make it for them whenever they visit.

Kim says
1. What was the highlight of your weekend?
I went out to lunch with my mom and sister. It was nice, because I can’t remember the last time the three of us went out to eat together. We went to this popular café a couple blocks from our house after my sister and I went to get new glasses. The food was alright, but the company was great.
2. When was the last time you taught someone something?
It was probably last week when I was cooking dinner with my boyfriend. I am by no means experienced when it comes to cooking, but he knows even less. He didn’t know to do a couple things, so I showed him how.
3. Do you ever download apps to your phone? Favorite ones?
I rarely download new apps, as I am fairly technologically challenged.
4. What do you do when you feel overwhelmed?
I am known to almost always be overwhelmed, stressing myself out more than most normal people do. Usually, I try to just take my mind off things by watching a show or movie, or sleep it off.
5. Do the men (or women) in your life use moisturizer and sunscreen?
My boyfriend never uses SPF, and it’s awful. When he does decide to moisturize, he will slather what’s leftover of his body lotion after moisturizing his hands, all over his face.
6. What should you do next/after this?
I should go workout. I have been slacking off a lot lately. I went from running a 5K every other day of the week while doing intense strength training in between, to barely moving at all.
7. Which makeup video or tutorial has been the most helpful one in the world for you?
Likewise, I love Lisa Eldridge’s videos. I think her videos are some of the few that are worthy of being deemed “tutorials” as they really are informative, and not just simply a woman recording herself putting on her makeup (although I love watching those as well).
8. Overalls and dungarees? Yea or nay?
Absolutely not.
9. Do you ever wear metallic eyeshadow? Favorite ways?
Not really. I love eyeshadow, but not on me. I don’t think I have eyes suited for eyemakeup, as it tends to make me look overdone. I usually stick to blanc type all over the lid, and a couple coats of mascara. I tend to experiment more with my lip color instead. Although in regards to this question, I really would not ever wear metallic lipstick.
10. What’s one nail art design you’ve wanted to/would try?
I used to be so fascinated by marbled nails, but it is much harder to achieve than it appears in the video tutorials I have seen. Nowadays, I prefer cream shades. The only nail polish shade I’ve worn in the past two years has been red. I’ve gone through an entire bottle of OPI Malaga Wine and now I’ve moved onto OPI Got the Blues for Red.

1. What was the highlight of your weekend? I took a really amazing nap on Sunday, and some friends from out of town came to visit on Saturday.
2. When was the last time you taught someone something? This isn’t that recent, but I taught my mom to take screenshots on her computer, which came in handy for some funny family drama on Facebook this morning! HILARIOUS.
3. Do you ever download apps to your phone? Favorite ones? I’m addicted to What’s the Phrase, which is basically Wheel of Fortune. I also use the HauteLook app sometimes. Oh, and Pinterest, although that kills the battery!
4. What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Cry and scream. And then take a nap, which is my advice for most situations, I think. I think much more clearly after some zen time.
5. Do the men (or women) in your life use moisturizer and sunscreen? Definitely not. I’m not sure if the fiance actually washes his face at all… If we’re going to be outside, I force him to wear sunscreen, since he’s nearly as pale as me.
6. What should you do next/after this? Yoga! I need it!
7. Which makeup video or tutorial has been the most helpful one in the world for you? I love Lisa Eldridge’s videos.
8. Overalls and dungarees? Yea or nay? Nay on me, but my dad wears overalls all the time, and they suit him. He does suspenders too – I think I might buy him some snazzy ones for my wedding!
9. Do you ever wear metallic eyeshadow? Favorite ways? I like wearing them on the lid, with a matte shade in the crease to tone it down a bit.
10. What’s one nail art design you’ve wanted to/would try? I want to try one of those Revlon two-ended sets with the metallic looking topcoat. I’m not much into nail art, to be honest! Maybelline has some speckled-looking polish I want to try.

I don’t wear eyeshadow too much, but I like metallic eyeliner…anything coppery colored.
10. What’s one nail art design you’ve wanted to/would try?
I like the nail art with the embellishments, such as bows, gems, etc. It would not last though since I have to wash dishes and do housework. But it would be fun.

1. What was the highlight of your weekend? Bought an antique vanity shaped like a small ladies writing desk. I was browsing the antique section on Craigslist when I found it. As soon as I saw it, I had to have it. It is so pretty! The lines are so feminine. Not bulky or office desk, dresser like. The delicate wood carvings, the fluted, tapered legs, the glass knobs, the bench with caned insert, the antiqued creamy white paint… If I could post a picture, I would. Can you tell I LOVE it? But, the happiest moment was when I opened the drawers. The two center drawers (one above the other) are only 2″ high each, but pull out to 18″. Perfect for blushes and eyeshadows. And the two 4″ tall drawers on each side of the center drawers are perfect for moisturizers, sunscreens, serums, hair brushes. I placed 4 small storage boxes with 3 pull out drawers in each box at the back of vanity top. That’s 12 small storage drawers to house my lipsticks, eyeliners, mascaras, foundations, etc.. A rectangular antique 3 pane window with mirrors installed instead of glass sits on top of the 4 small storage drawers at the perfect height and width. It’s the first thing I see when I walk into my bedroom and it makes me smile.
2. When was the last time you taught someone something? I taught my daughter how to ride a road bike last week. I gave her my 1 year old road bike because I recently bought a carbon fiber bike. It’s not much different than riding a 3 speed bike. But, it does take a couple of rides to get used to shifting the gears.
3. Do you ever download apps to your phone? Favorite ones? Yes. Sudoku.
4. What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? When I am truly overwhelmed, I realize it’s time to fix it. I will stay up all night going over my options. By morning, the decision on which actions I’m going to take are made. That is the only way I can have peace of mind and spirit.
5. Do the men (or women) in your life use moisturizer and sunscreen? My husband does not. I don’t mind if he looks older than me.
6. What should you do next/after this? Wash off my makeup.
7. Which makeup video or tutorial has been the most helpful one in the world for you? The one that showed how to use the Beauty Blender, my favorite. Can’t remember the guy’s name. He’s from Britain.
8. Overalls and dungarees? Yea or nay? Yea like 15 years ago. Nay now.
9. Do you ever wear metallic eyeshadow? Favorite ways? Not really. No real favorite.
10. What’s one nail art design you’ve wanted to/would try? None. I keep my nails clean, unpainted, trimmed and filed down.

1. What was the highlight of your weekend?
I got to be at home!
2. When was the last time you taught someone something?
I think it was a long time ago!
3. Do you ever download apps to your phone? Favorite ones?
Yes, most games though! Soundhound, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, Words with Friends, ModCloth and Pinterest are those I tend to stick with most, but games I go between all of the time. I’m cycling through Candy Crush Saga, Icomania, 4 Pics 1 Word, 4 Pics 1 Song, Tetris Blitz and True or False, SmartSnacks French are ones currently. Occasionally I hit Bejeweled Blitz, Bubbles Mania and some of the other games I have on my phone! I get bored very easily!
4. What do you do when you feel overwhelmed?
Go outside for a walk if it’s nice out! If not, I head to a nice quiet area like my room and chill out for 15-20 minutes. I might read or listen to music, but I have to take a mental break. If it’s music from my neighbor’s and it’s infiltrating my house even to my bedroom on the other side of the house, I have to put in my wax earplugs (if it lasts too long, we call our landlord as I can’t tolerate sound that loud because the sound moves the floor too.)
5. Do the men (or women) in your life use moisturizer and sunscreen?
Dad only uses sunscreen if he goes kayaking. I try to remember both everyday, but I mainly use moisturizer with SPF! I’m bad!
6. What should you do next/after this?
Take a shower and put on jammies.
7. Which makeup video or tutorial has been the most helpful one in the world for you?
Any pixiwoo tutorial!
8. Overalls and dungarees? Yea or nay?
I love my dungarees (hey, they are same thing.) I’m extraordinarily picky about my dungarees though. I prefer dark wash, traditional back and no distressing! I haven’t yet found that perfect pair yet!
9. Do you ever wear metallic eyeshadow? Favorite ways?
Yep. Mostly cream and it’s gold for some reason. I put it on messily as I normally wear it when I’m in a hurry. Somehow that always looks okay.
10. What’s one nail art design you’ve wanted to/would try?
Those super cool, super detailed ones. There’s this sunset cattail design Chalkboard Nails did as a guest post for All Lacquered Up and I love it! I would kill to be able to do that design! I have to work up to it!
Elle says
What was the highlight of your weekend?
Getting through planning the little details of my upcoming (and first) trip with the bf. Never thought I’d ever go to Arkansas in my life for any reason at all, so I’m psyched 🙂
When was the last time you taught someone something?
Hmmm…I was dogsitting and “taught” my friend’s dog to jump up onto my bed. Not sure that counts, but it was a pretty big leap for a small dog like him!
Do you ever download apps to your phone? Favorite ones?
I’m helpless with my phone to be brutally honest…
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed?
My go-to reaction used to be crying, but I’ve learned to curb it a bit and start by taking a deep breath and trying to figure out what’s really causing me to feel that way. If that doesn’t work I listen to music, write stuff down, and tell my bf about it.
Do the men (or women) in your life use moisturizer and sunscreen?
Yes, but if he hadn’t met me, I shudder to think what would have become of his “I used SPF 4 when I was vacationing in the Carribean two years before we got together” skin.
What should you do next/after this?
Work out tomorrow morning – gotta get a run in.
Which makeup video or tutorial has been the most helpful one in the world for you?
I love the Pixiwoo sisters (love that they’re sisters and seem to get along so well) and Dustin Hunter has awesome videos as well. Oh! And Gossmakeup artist. So funny and personable.
Overalls and dungarees? Yea or nay?
No easy access when you have to pee = nay
Do you ever wear metallic eyeshadow? Favorite ways?
Yes, but I haven’t lately. I don’t really do anything special with them but I always have to wear eyeliner when I do anything super metallic.
What’s one nail art design you’ve wanted to/would try?
I kind of like the idea of a leopard print nail, or a nail with a country’s flag on it.
