You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- How many jobs have you had in your life?
I’ve been working since I was 15, so this’ll take a minute to process. Let’s see… I’ve had 17 jobs over the past 23 years.Holy crap! That’s what happens when you don’t know what you want to be when you grow up. 🙂 Some of my favorite gigs were pet sitter/dog walker, foreign language lab assistant (I did this for three years in college and loved it) freelance writer and beauty blogger. Some of my least favorites were telemarketer (absolutely awful, but I learned how to handle myself on the phone), PR associate (the ink had barely dried on my business cards before I left this one) and ER intern (OMG, blood!).
- How many letters are there in your full name?
A lot. 30. Wow! - What’s the first color that comes to mind?
Blue. - If you could speak any language you don’t speak now, what would it be?
Italiano! I would love to vivere in Italia for a few years… Well, more accurately, I would love to spend a few years eating my way through Italy. - What’s one makeup-related thing you would like to learn?
It’s not a single thing, per se, but I’d like to learn how to do cray-cray special effects makeup and be able to make myself up like the Terminator and just walk around Trader Joe’s buying fruit and chips, looking like a cyborg.I wonder if dogs would bark at me…
- Do you ever wear body glitter?
Does Michael Kors Leg Shine count? If so, then yes. If not, then no. Probably not since around 2001. - Where do you usually get your hair cut/styled?
Alis Peralta at A-Line salon in Corte Madera for my cuts and colors. Highly recommended. I’ve been going to Alis for a few years. - Do you have a favorite drugstore makeup brand (for color products)?
Ooh, that’s a tough one. There are so many great drugstore brands out there. I like Neutrogena for their lip and cheek products, NYX for their eye makeup and Sonia Kashuk for just about everything. - Best shampoo under $10?
I love the gud by Burt’s Bees shampoos, especially in the Orange Petalooza and Ruby Red Groovy scents. They’re pretty mild, so no stripping, and don’t leave behind heavy residues or layers of goo. And they smell flurbing fantastic, too, all fresh and citrusy. - What’s the most important task on your to-do list today?
To track down my wetsuit and give it a good rinse. I gotta start packing for my surf trip to San Diego on Thursday.
To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

Happy Monday, Karen!
1. How many jobs have you had in your life?
I think I just counted 25, but I may have missed one or two…
I’ve been working since I was 16 and we’ve moved around a lot… my least favorite was “telephone solicitor” and my favorite is freelance henna/glitter artist.
2. How many letters are there in your full name?
18
3. What’s the first color that comes to mind?
green
4. If you could speak any language you don’t speak now, what would it be?
I also dream of eating my way through Italy… and Greece and Turkey and Morocco and… I would love to learn SPanish so I could talk to 1/3 of my customers without some sort of interpretation… I learned French in High School and it’s really made learning Spanish difficult!
5. What’s one makeup-related thing you would like to learn?
how to erase my dark circles
6. Do you ever wear body glitter?
Not intentionally. After a long day at Seaport Village, however, I am usually COVERED in glitter…
7. Where do you usually get your hair cut/styled?
HairLove by Kim Creekmore in La Mesa; she’s a studio in Wild Roots Salon, corner of Baltimore and Parkway. Going for my trim on Wednesday!
8. Do you have a favorite drugstore makeup brand (for color products)?

Trader Joe’s basic conditioner. I use it instead of a shampoo for my curly hair. $3.50 of greatness!
10. What’s the most important task on your to-do list today?
Get the housekeys to the catsitter. Followed by get a swimsuit. We’re off to Hawaii on Friday — which is kind of shame b/c I live in San Diego and it would have been fun to meet up for coffee… but next time, right?

1. How many jobs have you had in your life?
~Counting internships and volunteer gigs, 5. As far as paid, 2. I am 25 now and hoping my next job will be my last…I want to retire in that job!
2. How many letters are there in your full name?
~19 – not as many as you but still a good amount!
3. What’s the first color that comes to mind?
~Yellow – my fave. Had to spray my roses with my bug/disease rose spray because Japanese Beetles are eating them :(. Yellow is such a happy and bright color that it is an instant mood booster for me.
4. If you could speak any language you don’t speak now, what would it be?
~Both Spanish and Italian fluently. I speak some Italian but barely enough to get by, and I’d like to broaden my Spanish to more than introducing myself and doing a basic triage on emergency patients.
5. What’s one makeup-related thing you would like to learn?
~Hmmm…I would also be interested in those wild eye looks seen on models and at times in movies.
6. Do you ever wear body glitter?
~If lotions with barely-there shimmer count, then yes.
7. Where do you usually get your hair cut/styled?
~By Jen at Urbana Hair Cuttery. She is amazing. It’s always hard moving to a different place and/or finding a great stylist in general but she is awesome.
8. Do you have a favorite drugstore makeup brand (for color products)?
~I also love NYX for the eye makeup, Cover Girl and Maybelline for mascara, Physician’s Formula for the bronzers, Sonia Kashuk for anything in general but also different and limited edition stuff (like the shadows in Moroccan Dunes – great palette of shimmery neutrals), L’Oreal Paris has some great mascaras and eyeshadows (love the Infallible ones), and I’ve bought nail polishes and mascaras from Revlon before that worked well. Milani is also a running favorite, because I’ve rarely gotten anything that didn’t work from that line.
9. Best shampoo under $10?
~I am loving the Dove shampoos – they work great and i love the green tea/cucumber one. It leaves my hair smelling and feeling fresh and clean but without stripping the oils.
10. What’s the most important task on your to-do list today?
~Finish a packet for a test tomorrow – after that the rest of my day is free.

To clean up all the dirty dishes in our apartment! We had a homemade-pizza party on Saturday, and I still need to tidy things up from that. I suppose I’m glad that we’re green and didn’t have paper plates and cups around, but now I have sooo many dirty dishes to wash… sigh.

Cashier at a book/movie/software/game store, zoner at Waldemart (I am SO allergic to that place, literally), do-all at a comic/music/cool stuff store, do-all at a Halloween store (AWESOME), phone jockey at a background investigation company, salesperson/kids’ teacher/all-around creative type at a sewing store, and now I’m disabled. Oh, and I write, and am considered pro (even though I’m horribly blocked ATM), so there’s that.
2. How many letters are there in your full name? Eighteen in the name I recognize as mine. The married name will be gone in time.
3. What’s the first color that comes to mind? Black. If you don’t consider that a color,
your lossburgundy.4. If you could speak any language you don’t speak now, what would it be? Akkadian, though reading it would be the more important part. As far as speaking goes, I’d do better to understand Iraqi Arabic. There’s a very long and complicated story behind this that would either immortalize my name or get me lynched.
5. What’s one makeup-related thing you would like to learn? How to do cat’s eye liner. I can never get the flick.
6. Do you ever wear body glitter? Sadly, I’m a wee bit old for body glitter. I do better to make my own sunblocks and body lotions and add a bunch of mica (white or colored) to give myself a nice, unearthly shimmer. Sometime, I want to try lilac and pale blue!
7. Where do you usually get your hair cut/styled? At a little $10-a-cut place in town. My stylist is awesome, but quitting in a month to go back to school so she can become a teacher. I’ll have to get her to give me the names of some good Alternative Hair stylists. (I’m a terrible adult.)
8. Do you have a favorite drugstore makeup brand (for color products)? Not really. My skin is so sensitive that I have trouble with nearly every drugstore brand on the market. (The last time I put on a Cover Girl shadow, I had hives on my eyelids.) Almay has some okay stuff, as does Physician’s Formula. They don’t do nearly enough funky stuff, though, and their foundations aren’t made for someone with my natural pallor in mind. Come to think, no drugstore brand plans for my pallor–my jeans are a sexy 22, but my skin is a 00!
9. Best shampoo under $10? SweetsNThings on Etsy. Rhea makes the most amazing bar shampoos, and I’m not allergic to them. Great soaps, cleansers, moisturizers, etc. too. CHECK HER OUT!
10. What’s the most important task on your to-do list today? It was either the rheumatology appointment, which resulted in driving all over town for a chest X-ray and a tuberculosis test, or the pain specialist appointment, which resulted in a big, fat steroid injection in my dominant shoulder. I think I deserve my last Estrella Daura tonight. (It’s a wonderful lager from Spain–and considered gluten free! YES!)

French. I don’t even know why. I’ve never been to France and have no immediate plans to go, but I feel like the language sounds so pretty.
5. What’s one makeup-related thing you would like to learn?
Winged eyeliner. Ugh. I have the Elf liner pen, but I’ve heard people have better luck with the gel. I just need to get it and spend an afternoon practicing and messing up lol
6. Do you ever wear body glitter?
Not a fan of glitter :/
7. Where do you usually get your hair cut/styled?
EG Salon in CT. Getting my hair colored for the first time this week. Cannot wait.
8. Do you have a favorite drugstore makeup brand (for color products)?
I’m weird with makeup because I really don’t like colors lol I love neutrals and browns. Elf has some great basics. Any color on my face is usually on my lips. My current favorites are Revlon Lip Butter in Peach Parfait, Burt’s Bees tinted chapstick in Hibiscus, and Rimmel Kate Moss matte lipstick (103 I think).
9. Best shampoo under $10?
Aussie Moisture Surge (I think that’s what it’s called…) or Suave Professionals Keratin line.
10. What’s the most important task on your to-do list today?

1. How many jobs have you had in your life? 8 since I was 18 in ’98. I just had my 8 year anniversary at my current job and I can still say I love working there, which is a blessing. Dang. 18! Not counting underage jobs like babysitting, pet sitting, plant watering, and door-to-door papier mache animal sales! OMG, I had totally forgotten about that! I used to make papier mache animals and bookmarks and walk around my neighborhood selling them! The people who bought those “works of art” were so nice, esp. now that I’m older and realize no one really *needs* a purple papier mache pig!

1. How many jobs have you had in your life? 7? My first job (I worked there for a couple weeks and didn’t get paid) was at a radio station, which was pretty cool. I worked as a restaurant hostess/gift shop person for 2 years, I came home smelling like onion rings every day (not sexy). I had a short stint as a bank teller, which was easy but I hated it (it was during the fall of 2008 – not a good time to work in a bank!) I worked at Macy’s over a year in two positions – clothing sales (dresses, coats, swimwear) and cosmetics (mostly Lancome, filled in at Origins for a while too, and have worked short shifts at a lot of the counters). I worked as a grad assistant at my university, doing stuff for profs, and now I do market research.

7. Where do you usually get your hair cut/styled? My cousin’s house. She has a salon there.
8. Do you have a favorite drugstore makeup brand (for color products)? Depends on the product. I love my L’Oreal Infallible gel liner, and I love L’Oreal lip products. My eyeshadows are usually high-end though.
9. Best shampoo under $10? I’ve been using Pantene Aqua Light, and it works great for my fine, straight hair. Wash and condition with that, use a tiny bit of the John Frieda Sheer Solution, and my hair looks really nice without doing any heat styling.
10. What’s the most important task on your to-do list today? Calling my Grandma, which I did! I booked my wedding venue and bought a dress, so it was necessary! Oh, and going to work.

I’ve been reading your blog for yours, since 2007 I think, but this is the first time I’m filling the poll, I think.
1. I’ve worked since 11. Papergirl. And I’m old. And now I work free lance. Let’s see, full time work just 3. But part time 9. And now that I work freelance, numerous contracts, more than 20 I think.

4. I took years of German, and I’m pretty good with reading. But speaking, I wish. No other language comes to mind. It is THE foreign language to me, I love the sound of the spoken German. Have been for decades.
5. Hmmm nothing comes to mind. I love makeup but am pretty conservative in my style. Maybe a course in nail polish, but more for the certificate than anything as I learn real fast from YT videos and the such.
6. I don’t think so.
7. Any old salon.
8. NYX and Milani
9. Lush Honey shampoo, it’s new
10. Whittle down my to do list.
