You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
Chipper.I’ve got a to-do list as long as my leg, but I feel like I have a pretty good handle on everything. Got my organization on this “ay em.”
- If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep?
Lipstick, for sure. Sometimes it comes down to ease of use, and I can’t think of a quicker, easier way to look like I actually tried to put myself together than popping some color on my lips. But what a cruel, cruel question… I’d hate to give up eyeshadow, but let’s assume in this little fiction of ours that you can still wear eyeliner. 🙂 Blacktrack and Powersurge 4ever!
- Do you have a favorite necklace?
Not that I can think of right now. I’ve had favorite necklaces over the years, though, like the silver Tiffany heart I bought for myself with my winnings from a slot machine in Vegas 10 years ago, but I haven’t really been into necklaces lately…The ones I have always get caught in my hair, and I have a bad habit of losing jewelry.
Earrings, though, I love and wear a lot.
- Are you more into vintage or modern style?
How about mostly modern with vintage accents? - Where will you be spending the holidays this year?
Two places. Redding, which is a town up near the Oregon border where El Hub’s parents live now, and Union City, which is where my parents live in the East Bay Area about 40 miles from here.Lots of driving, but since my family celebrates on Christmas Eve, and El Hub’s celebrates on Christmas morning, it works out.
- What’s something you realize that you’re irrational about?
Calling Kaiser to make appointments to see my doctor.I like to think of myself as a pretty rational, reasonable person (except for the whole cats and makeup thing), but I lose it every time I have to call Kaiser to make an appointment. Sorry to any Kaiser employees out there, but that phone system is a mess. I’m getting shuffled around to at least three different departments, and I either end up raising my voice or crying by the end of it.
I’m sure there are many nice folks manning those phone lines…but I never seem to run into them. Grrr…
- Do you like cheesy holidays movies?
Do I! Elf is one of my favorites. Matter of fact, it’s saved on the Tivo right now, and don’t even get me started on those Hallmark and ABC Family Christmas flicks. I plan to watch a ton of them this month, whee! - Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year?
I will. I usually get one from Trader Joe’s, which reminds me…I need to do that.I like the pine ones with the tiny little pine cones… I love that smell!
- What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start?
Coffee and avoiding my email until 10. - Weekly goals:
This is the week. This is it! I want to start doing my Christmas shopping (no procrastinating!), look around for a rug to put under the dining room table, and put up a Christmas tree.Among all of the other non-holiday tasks and projects, of course.
G’morning, sweets! Happy Monday — the first Monday of December.
Before you know it, we’ll be wishing each other a happy new year.
So…let’s just do that now. Happy New Year!! 🙂
This year, my overall plan for the holidays is to just enjoy every second, starting right now with today’s Monday Poll, and I hope you join me.
To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

Did you watch anything good?
I saw Argo on Saturday (FINALLY) and really enjoyed it.
Marina says
ooh, I will take a look. And I’ve finally watched 500 days of summer, among other things, it was nice, but predictable 🙂
Sandy says
Loved your poll today Karen, so cheery! Elf is my favorite Christmas movie too and I’m planning to watch it tonight. Have a good week.
Karen says
Hi Sandy,
Have fun watching it! 🙂 I’m off to pour some maple syrup on my spaghetti (kidding!).
Nina says
1. Mood: Quite happy! 🙂 I need to sleep though. I couldnt last night.

3. Do you have a favorite necklace? I do – Its a silver chain with a little cross pendant. Its from my brother.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? A happy mixture of both!
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year? At home. 🙂
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about? Like you, I hate making and going to doctors appointments.
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies? My fave is probably Love, Actually. 🙂
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? No. My allergies dont like them.
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? Quiet mornings. And pesky co workers not being pesky.
10. Weekly goals: Just to continue riding this crest of good cheer!
Karen says
Hey Nina!
I can’t imagine you without your brighter than bright lippies.
Here’s to your co-workers being nice to you this week. 🙂
Nina says
I wish your wish for me (co workers) comes true! 😀
Yeah I knowwww but my eyes *need* eyeshadow so I look awake!
Kim says
1. Mood: Very festive, thanks! 🙂
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep? I would give up eyeshadow. I know I always say I don’t wear much lipstick, but I’d still like the option, you know?
3. Do you have a favorite necklace? I do. I never wear it; I haven’t in about 22 years (now, I’m depressed to realize I was technically an adult 22 years ago!) but it has a lot of sentimental value. 🙂
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? I’d say vintage, particularly in furniture.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year? At home! Everyone comes to us!
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about? Life? HAHA! It is seriously a long list but, probably, I’m most bothered by slow/bad drivers. Honestly, people. When you’re driving at half the speed of the posted limit and there have been 17 cars piled up behind you for the last 10 miles, PULL OVER and let them by! 🙂
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies? I love Love, Actually and the Hubs thinks it’s super-cheesy so I suppose that’s a yes. 🙂 I actually got teared up the other night just *thinking* about It’s a Wonderful Life (I hate when the pharmacist hits George’s ear until it bleeds).
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? You bet! We have one up now because the hockey club sells them as a fundraiser. We also have our tree and all our inside decorations done. Yay, us!
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? Funny email from my friends and looking forward to the next weekend. hee hee!
10. Weekly goals: Get the outside decorating done; keep the house clean and organized; be extra-kind to everyone (hey, it’s Christmastime). Oh, and get treats for the advent calendar (3 days late!).
Karen says
YOU GO with your decorations! The plan is to get ours up over the weekend. Fingers crossed that it actually happens.
Oh, and thank you for reminding me to watch Love, Actually. That’s easily a top 5 holiday flick.
P.S. You’d probably hate my driving. =[
Kim says
Thanks! Good luck with yours this weekend. We’re shooting for today after work because it’s going to be 53 degrees. No kidding. And it was THREE degrees on Friday. How crazy is that?
Oh, no! I’d just have you hop in the car with me. You could control the iPod and I’d do the driving. HAHA!
Trisha says
1. Mood: Sleepy. So…sleepy. I blame it on the gloominess outside.
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep? Totally lipstick. I have a lot more fun with eye shadow.
3. Do you have a favorite necklace? Unfortuantely, no. I’ve tried to get into wearing necklaces, but it hasn’t worked out. My hair’s curly, and it always gets tangled.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? Ummm…a mix?
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year? At my mom’s house. Christmas Eve is with the step-family, and Christmas is without, but both things happen at the same place.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about? I honestly can’t think of anything. I blame it on the gloominess outside. 😉
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies? No. I LOVE them!!! I’ve been watching a lot of made-for-TV holiday movies on Netflix lately. I watched the Holiday Engagement last night. Yeah, that’s a good one.
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? I’ve got one! But it’s not a pine-y wreath. It’s this multi-colored tinsel wreath I got on sale at Target after Christmas last year.
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? A good night’s sleep and a good breakfast.
10. Weekly goals: Finish my holiday shopping. (I’m almost done!)

Hi Dominique,
A little off topic, but I hope you’re having fun with your Kiko haul! Have you found any good gems?
Dominique says
Hi Karen,
Yes Karen, a great haul and I found some very beautiful quads, I took the 6 Holiday quads among other numerous items, to be honest Kiko quads are better than Dior or Chanel quints/quads, they are baked and very pigmented just perfect. I also took a quad from Lavish Oriental ( Fall 2012 ), not baked but the texture is great some kind of a creamy powder. Their lipsticks ” double touch ” are very good, innovative. Their regular creamy and matte lipsticks are good, well I am glad with that dramatic haul. I hope you’ll try Kiko again it’s worth the price really.
MM Curator says
1. Mood: Is sleepy a mood? I can’t seem to wake up today!
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep? – Ack. Probably eye shadow. I look like a corpse without lip color!
3. Do you have a favorite necklace? – I have a few I love but no absolute favorite.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? – Modern, definitely.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year? – In Pennsylvania for a few days with my folks, then back to Baltimore for New Year’s.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about? I have a lot of strange, irrational fears. Examples: getting caught in a subway turnstile, ordering food at a drive-thru (still can’t do this), running out of toilet paper. If we get down to like 4 rolls left I’m seized with the urge to run out and get more. LOL.
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies? Eh, not really. I have a few favorites (Elf, Christmas Story) but I don’t like the really super cheesy ones on Lifetime.
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? Nah. DH can’t stand holiday clutter, or any clutter for that matter…I’m lucky I even get to have a miniature tree!
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? 1. Making sure my makeup brushes are washed and ready to go. 2. Having my meals planned out.
10. Weekly goals: The usual – keep up with my blog, get to the gym at least 3 times. Also need to decorate the aforementioned mini Christmas tree!
Karen says
Oh gosh, I have the same issue with toilet paper! El Hub thinks I’m completely insane, but if I don’t have at least a few back up rolls I totally freak out!
Heidi says
1. Mood:
So tired. I was hit by a huge wave of grief over the last few days and although I’m feeling better today I exhausted myself with a lot of crying.
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep?
That depends. If I can still wear lipgloss I’ll give up the lipstick, but if not, then I’ll give up eyeshadow and stick with eyeliner.
3. Do you have a favorite necklace?
I do. Just this most recent Thanksgiving the woman who’s house I went to gave me a real aspen tree leaf that was turned into a pendant by dipping it in gold, copper, and silver. It’s really beautiful.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style?
I like both, but lean more towards modern.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year?
I have no idea yet. I’m just hoping that something special comes up.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about?
When someone doesn’t call when they say they will my mind goes to all sorts of terrible places.
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies?
Oh, definitely. Love ELF, Last Holiday, The Holiday, and Christmas with the Kranks.
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year?
No, because my door’s not really protected from the elements. I may get one of those Trader Joe’s ones and put it on the table and put a candle in it.
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start?
If I can get something accomplished then I feel good. I just got current on bill paying, so that’s a very nice way to start the week.
10. Weekly goals:
Christmas shopping, and trying to take one day at a time (not my strong suit).
Karen says
Hi Heidi,
You’ve been through some big life changes this year so it’s natural, I think, to still be hit by these waves of sadness. I’m sorry that the holidays have been hard for you. I know you were very close with your mom.
I’m glad your week at least is off to a good start. Keep your chin up.
Kiss & Make-up says

Agata says
Hey girl!
1. Mood: Good! I am still getting over my bronchitis but I am feeling much better. I had a great weekend and I accomplished a lot yesterday. Working today but my mom in law was nice enough to bring me a Gingerbread latte from Starbucks and she also made a gingerbread latte cake for me 🙂

3. Do you have a favorite necklace? Yes, I have a necklace I got from my mom, it’s beaded with pink and purple natural stones, agates I think. I love it.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? I would say modern but I like vintage looking furniture and decor.

10. Weekly goals: Get over my sickness, go shopping and buy Christmas gifts for family and friends in Poland and clean the house, it’s an absolute mess 🙂
Karen says
Hi Agata,
I’m glad to hear that you’re feeling better! That’s great news. 🙂
Agata says
Thank you! I want to be cured by my birthday on Thursday!
S says
1. Mood:
A bit worn out. I did some cleaning and I made pizza dough.. and I know that doesn’t seem like much, but I’m still getting used to the whole domestic lifestyle (yes, 4 years later).
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep?
As much as I love eyeshadow, I have to choose lipstick as well. Can I keep coloured eyeliner as well? 😉
3. Do you have a favorite necklace?
A have a pendant made of sandstone with a boat painted on it that my friend gave me. It’s very casual and reminiscent of my province.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style?
Probably both. That reminds me that I should really get into thrifting again…
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year?
With my husband’s family on Christmas and then probably my family on Boxing Day.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about?
Phone calls in general (I can call my husband, family, and friends no problem, but that’s about it) and germs. Baaah.

I’m not a huge fan of them but I do like Elf, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the cartoon), and the Chipmunks Christmas (the one with the golden harmonica).
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year?
I live in an apartment and I always fear someone will steal it, even though other people hang things on their doors and no one takes anything… but still.
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start?
Writing my blog, cleaning, coffeeee.
10. Weekly goals:
Mop the floors. yay.
Karen says
Hi S,
That’s cool that you made your own pizza dough. Is it hard? I’ve always imagined it to be a long, complicated task.
S says
It’s actually pretty easy! I use this recipe and tutorial http://www.annamariavolpi.com/pizza_recipe.html. The only problem is it can get kind of messy with all the flour on the counter, but if you set aside for prep and cleaning, it’s simple.
Natasha says
Ooh… I love making my own pizza, but have yet to perfect the crust — when your hubby is from NYC, it’s difficult to reach that NYC standard for crust… I will have to check out your link and try that recipe!
denise says

The vet said tail injuries are very common, thank God he’s doing well!
Karen says
Hi Denise,
Sorry to hear about the accident with your kitty. I hope he gets better soon. How long has he been your cat? And how do you pronounce his name?
Denise S says
Blaow rhymes with owl, the sound he makes when he meows, lol. We’ve had Blaow for close to 9 years now. My daughter found him eating garbage at her middle school. He’s a pampered kitty like Tabs!
Karen says
That’s a cute name. What a lucky guy to have been found by your daughter! I love all cats, but I think the strays who adopt us are extra, extra special.
Ruchita says
1. Mood:
Good.
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep?
I would keep eyshadow. I mainly wear neutrals on my lips, so I wouldn’t miss it too much.
3. Do you have a favorite necklace?
Nope. I have necklaces I wear as accessories, but there’s not one I gravitate to all the time.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style?
Modern.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year?
London! My parents decided to take a last minute trip to visit some relatives and invited me along. My brother, who lives in DC, will also be going. The only bummer is that my husband is not going and I’ll miss celebrating Christmas with his side of the family. Also, I’ll be missing the kitties. Hopefully we can Skype while I’m gone.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about?
Talking on the phone. I’m on conference calls for work all the time, but I hate making chit chat on the phone. I much prefer text or email.
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies?

8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year?
I need to get on that. I have one in the basement I need to find. Easier said than done!

No Monday morning meetings and peppermint hot chocolate from Tim Horton’s.
10. Weekly goals:
Do some research for the London trip.
Have a great week!
Karen says
Hi Ruchita,
How exciting to be traveling with most of your family during the holidays. Is this your first time going? For sure you’ll have to get some good beauty shopping in!
Ruchita says
Yep, this will be my first time in London! Looking forward to seeing the sights and doing some shopping.
Karen says
You’ll have so much fun. I’ve only been once, and believe it or not, it was during a heat wave! Most of the memories I have of London are of it being really, really hot.
Re: beauty shopping, if you can check out Daniel Sandler. I haven’t tried the line but have heard great things about it:
http://www.danielsandler.com/
Katherine G says
On the note about Kaiser, a lot of my patients hate having to talk to them too, and it’s a pain in the butt when we are treating them. Just take deep breaths, and remember that YOU are the paying customer and patient and deserve the best care no matter what!
1. Mood:
~Sleepy, woke up early to go hunting with the fiance. Didn’t get anything but did see a large 10 point buck who is probably laughing his little deer butt off at us for his grand escape plan. He’s also probably making funny faces at the trail cameras we put up….we will have to check them later, hahahaha! He eluded 4 people this morning that elusive little (actually, pretty big) critter!
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep?
~Eyeshadow. Since that’s what I know best in the realm of makeup, I would keep that. But also on the fantasy of keeping things we need and not being specific…my Burt’s Bees lip balms would still be around, right? They don’t REALLY count as lipstick ;).
3. Do you have a favorite necklace?
~A few. I have some diamonds from my grandmother and mom, and some costume jewelry I’m fond of. I don’t wear them that much (was still moving some of them over to the new place), the only jewelry I really wear is my engagement ring, and a ring I got on the ship this October.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style?
~I love a little bit of both. I own a few corsets (a couple made out of real steel boning) because they remind me of movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, or shows like The Tudors, and I love those eras (that would be my vintage of sorts). I like the modern things like skinny jeans, t-shirts….I’m pretty classic with the way I dress and don’t follow too many trends.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year?
~I am hoping with all sides of the family, since we are off work for Christmas this year. Lot of traveling, but worth it to see everyone.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about?
~I can be irrational when I feel like I’ve failed (even if everyone else is telling me that I do great work, or my patients tell me that they are happy). It’s something I’m working on, because being a perfectionist hasn’t gotten me anywhere.
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies?
~Some of them, like Elf and Jim Carrey’s version of the Grinch.
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year?
~Probably, I may get a real one when we get our real tree! I got lots of pretty ribbon to decorate it with.
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start?
~As much as I don’t want to sometimes, exercise, and making a list (in my head or on paper) of what needs to be done.
10. Weekly goals:
~Finish paperwork for one department and get it sent. Get transcripts on their way, too (have to figure out how to get the high school one, it’s been 7 years since I had to send one).
~Since my shoulder was injured, start working yoga and weight lifting back into my routine (it’s been 5 days now and I’m antsy, LOL).
~Stay positive and don’t let things get me down.
Karen says
Hi Katherine,
Thanks for the reminder. I just get so frustrated, you know? Next time I feel like losing my sh*z I’ll have to remember those deep breaths!!!
Hope your shoulder heals up soon. I know how it feels to get antsy. When I can’t run I totally get the wiggles, too.
Katherine G says
Hey no prob! I used to get upset when I felt like things were going wrong or I was being treated a certain way. Getting older and having to deal with a lot of not-so-nice things have helped, as well as making positive changes like doing yoga again and weight lifting. I would also stop and take a minute when you start to feel upset to think about why you are feeling that way. It not only helps keep any angry or upset outbursts at bay but it also helps you hone in on what the “triggers” are for the situation.
Hope you have a great week!
Karen says
You too. 🙂 Hey, maybe I’ll even make it to a yoga class (or at least pop in a DVD!). Hearing you talk about it all the times makes me want to go back!

4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? Vintage, of course…

7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies? ELF! ELF ELF ELF! I watched it twice yesterday. yes I’m serious!
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? Nope. Got lights and garland all around the house though!
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? At home facial and sleep!
10. Weekly goals: Eat healthier to prep for the end of the month eating frenzy!
Karen says

Natasha says
1. Mood:

Not really. I have some favorite scarves in the cold months and lost of favorite earrings. But I don’t really wear necklaces very often.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style?
My style is more comfort-based. Spandex is my best friend… so I guess that makes me a modern girl…
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year?
X-Mas eve on an airplane, arriving at the in-laws in NYC on X-Mas day… New Year’s at home near San Diego.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about?
I totally understand about Kaiser’s phone system! That drives me crazy, too!
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies?
Yes! All of them!
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year?
No. Our door has windows which makes it impossible to hang anything. I miss hanging wreaths… but I prefer owning a house without a wreath to an apartment with a wreath!
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start?
Morning cuddles with the kittehs and then a really good fast walk. I get cranky if I don’t get my walk and kitty cuddles.
10. Weekly goals:
Organize packing for trips starting next Monday (Nashville, Tel Aviv, NYC), be organized and chipper for party on Thursday (I’m vending, not partying) and to stay calm and focused. Deep breaths. It will all get done.
Karen says
Hi Natasha,
I remember you mentioning your trips. Whew! You’re logging in some serious milage. I hope everything goes smoothly. Are you flying direct to all these places?
Natasha says
Next Monday I fly to Nashville and on Friday I return to San Diego, and on Saturday hubby and I will fly to Tel Aviv together with a plane change in Newark and then the flight to NYC is technically a plane change (with a week in between).
Karen says
Sounds jam-packed, but at least you get a little break in between all that traveling and you don’t have a gajillion connecting flights. 🙂 I hope you have fun and that everything goes smoothly.
Lolamd says
1. Mood: Blah..it is a monday after all. No matter how hard I try i just can’t be happy on monday..haha

3. Do you have a favorite necklace? Yes am wearing it now by Alex Woo.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? Modern style
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year? With my family in NYC.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about? Ooooh so many things that I could list but I guess when you are late meeting me and don’t even call to let me know.

9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? Exercise and good cup of tea
10. Weekly goals: Hit that gym, eat healthy and stay away from candy
Karen says
Hi Lolamd,
Great goals this week! I hope to stay away from candy too… It’s hard!
Linnea says
1. Mood: Surprisingly good. Been fighting for a few hours with something, but I think I’m finally getting to work! Really loving life right now, so I’ll take it!!
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep? Oh man.. I agree with you on the lipstick, but I wear eyeshadow more often..
3. Do you have a favorite necklace? Umm, there is this heart one that my boy gave me a couple years back that I like wearing.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? Modern for the most part. I find vintage a bit busy and cheap looking sometimes. Sometimes its beautifully done.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year? Home. Everyone is coming here, so we’re just spending it at both parents’ places.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about? Hmmm.. making appointments in general. It usually turns out just fine, but sometimes it just gets to you.
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies? Heck yes!! Love Actually, Elf, Santa Claus, oh all of them!
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? Maybe? I didn’t think about it..
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? a clean bathroom and room, and a good cup of coffee on monday morning. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen for me this morning..
10. Weekly goals: Get a bulk of Christmas shopping done (hopefully tonight!) and get ready for baking extravaganza!
Karen says
Hi Linnea,
A baking extravaganza sounds like so much fun. What are you making?
Jae says
1. Mood: extremely exhausted…though a tad better since I consumed espresso #2
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep? Lipstick for sure. Funny, its the only thing I have on (other than eyeliner) today. I won’t even talk about the hot mess that is my hair.
3. Do you have a favorite necklace? A gold cross necklace that my mom gave me when I was 6 and a diamond eternity pendant from her when I turned *cough* 30 *cough*
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? love vintage!
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year? Since we spent turkey day w/my hubby’s fam in socal, we’re spending x’mas in the bay at my auntie’s house.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about? As of late, I’ve been too exhausted to be irrational (let alone rational) about most things. Incoherent would be more up my alley.
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies? L-O-V-E cheesy holiday movies!! ELF is a holiday tradition. The kiddies will randomly say quotes from the movie and it warms my heart! =)
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? Yes, we have two-one on each.
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? Sleep (though I haven’t gotten much of that) and a good, strong sexy boy toy…sorry fell aslepp right there…i mean, strong cup of coffee!! ;p
10. Weekly goals: Finish the fiscal year costing structure before the end of the week. i.will.survive.
Karen says
LOL, Jae. I’m having hair issues myself. I desperately need to go to the salon! What’s going on with your hair these days?
Jae says
It’s normally super straight but the weather has it all kinds of frizzy. Its NOT cute!! hahahaha!! But i’m in dyer need of a cut and not sure what i want to do with my color. Ponytails, buns and your tuck and fluff trick have been saving me from looking like the crazy finance lady! =p
Morgan says
1. Mood:-Anxious. Even though I want to enjoy December fully, I literally cannot wait for christmas, if only for the fact that I know most of my gifts are makeup related 🙂
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep?-I would keep eyeshadow, since my lips are often lipstick bright anyways lol
3. Do you have a favorite necklace?-Yes, a silver princess crown that my grandmother bought me. Since I am a princess after all.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? I’m gonna go with Karen’s answer on this one.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year?-My stepdad’s mother’s house on christmas eve, my house on christmas morning, then my grandparents’ house for the rest of the day.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about?- My fear of starting things like a job or an assignment. I’m usually capable of it, I just hate starting things!
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies?-OMG yes! It isn’t christmas without all of the claymation movies 🙂
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? It’s already there!
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start?- A nice cup of tea with agave nectar in it, and actually having tasks written down.
10. Weekly goals: Finish christmas shopping, give myself a mani/pedi, and sit down to read Gone with the wind. I WILL finish it this week!
Karen says
Hi Morgan,
What makeup do you have on your gift list this year? Like always, I have brushes. 🙂
Morgan says
I in fact have a set of lovely purple brushes from sigma on my list 🙂 I have some chanel (I NEED peridot nail polish!), some sugarpill, and a few other bits and bobs. Oh and of course a kit from urban decay! They do some of the best eyeliner sets.
Karen says
Nice list! I’ve never tried Sigma brushes but have heard great things.
Chanel is always, always a good thing to have on your wish list. I’m hoping for a couple bars of Coco Mademoiselle soap.
Chelsea says
1. Mood: Stressed! Almost the end of the semester though, so I have hope!
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep? Oh god, that’s just mean. Probably lipstick, if I can still wear tinted lip balms.
3. Do you have a favorite necklace? I only have two I wear ever – one is from H&M with gold and black bunny pendants, so probably that.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? I like to combine the two! Love winged eyeliner and flared skirts, but all retro looks weird. I like to combine my girly flared dresses with some more ass-kicking items like lace up boots or leather.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year? With my parents in Northern Michigan! I think my brother and his wife will be in from Wisconsin as well!
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about? I’m terrified of moths.
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies? Some of them! Charlie Brown Christmas, Year Without a Santa, Rudolph, Elf…
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? Probably not!
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? Having remembered to go grocery shopping, and naps.
10. Weekly goals: finish (err, start AND finish) this Finance project, get more grading done (UGH – my prof dropped scantrons in the mud, so I have to hand grade things!), and try not to sleep all day out of stress.
Karen says
Oh no… scantrons in the mud pretty much sounds like a nightmare.
How were the advertising awards, btw?
Chelsea says
They were awesome! It’s like Detroit’s version of the Cannes Festival of Creativity. I knew some of the award winners, we got front-row seats and got to meet the heads of the council and jury.
TrippyPixie says
1. Mood: Really tired, as per usual. I had to give an oral presentation in my one class, so I’m drained.
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep?: I’d keep lipstick. I have so many lip products that it’s ridiculous. Also, since I have ocular allergies, I can’t wear eyeshadow often.
3. Do you have a favorite necklace?: Yes. A silver-colored spiked one from Forever21.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style?: It depends more on an individual piece of clothing as opposed to a style as a whole.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year?: At home. I shall be watching DVDs and going on a mental vacation!
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about?: Needles. I feel them in my arm, and it creeps me out. I’d love to donate blood one day (and find out what my blood type is), but I’m just too freaked out by needles. I’d need somebody to hold my hand.
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies?: No, I’m not a fan of cheesy movies in general. (“A Christmas Story” doesn’t count, though, does it? I love that one.)
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year?: Possibly.
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start?: Not a lot of homework, and getting enough sleep.
10. Weekly goals: Revise and finish the other half of one essay, write three other essays from scratch, and prepare for finals next week. Don’t procrastinate, relax, and keep thinking of how this semester is almost over!
Karen says
Hi Trippypixie,
Prepping for big presentations can be exhausting! I bet you’re glad it’s done. What was the subject?
TrippyPixie says
It was for my Honors Intro to the Social Sciences class, and the presentation was on how Ghana’s cocoa production leads to child labor. I also had to discuss how past colonization and current globalization of the food industry are affecting the production of cocoa in that country. I now have to write a paper about my presentation, making sure to note capitalism’s effect on the current globalization of the food industry.
Whew. Sounds fun, doesn’t it?
Diana says
1. Mood:
Happy.
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep?

I don’t like wearing necklaces.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style?
Vintage AND Modern.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year?

10. Weekly goals: Keeping the kitchen clean 😀
Karen says
Hi Icaria,
A cafe latte sounds great. Add a dining room table and I’m in!
Suri says
1. Mood: exhausted and agitated. It was a really crappy work day and I was surrounded by negativity which completely drained me.
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep? I would definitely keep lipstick. The right color seems to bring my face to life and could probably keep me looking half way awake. I love lip products more anyway.
3. Do you have a favorite necklace? I did but I lost it! wah
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? I like elements of vintage but I would say my style is more modern.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year? Probably just visiting family. If I could go away though I will.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about? Irresponsibility. I just can’t take the idea that grown people can’t or don’t have the common sense to just do the right thing.
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies? Of course! They are part of my holiday ritual.
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? Yep. I actually put it up the day after Thanksgiving. It’s fake but I love it.
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? Coffee and a smile.
10. Weekly goals: work out, laundry, read for class, finish my paper, maintain a positive attitude and not kill anyone 🙂
Karen says
Hi Suri,
Tomorrow is a new day. Hopefully it’ll be one where you won’t have the urge to stab anyone (GURL… I totally understand).
Hugs!
Kate & Zena says
Hi! I’m sorry that I’ve been gone for a while, but I’ve been rather busy!
1. Mood:
Tired. I was up until SEVEN AM reading…I guess you can say I got rather absorbed, huh? I didn’t even finish it, sadly! I was thisclose to finishing it, but the words started blurring together. Ugh!
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep?
Eyeshadow. Lipstick isn’t lipgloss and I wear lipgloss more!
3. Do you have a favorite necklace?
I have two. They are from etsy. They are bent metal word ones. One is a six inch silver one that says, “Espoir,” which is French for “hope.” The one is a nine inch necklace that I had commissioned that says, “Strength.”
These two words are part of an informal motto of my house, “Love, Hope, Strength.” It’s sort of a military motto if you live within the bases long enough. Those two words are the most important to me.
I would have gotten, “Love,” but I don’t have enough neck room!
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style?
Vintage! They fit me better!
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year?
At my grandma’s, as always!
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about?
When things are not where they should be, or when one piece of a set is missing! I will obsess about it to an irrational state.
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies?
Yes. Elf, Christmas Vacation (OMG, I love that movie.), How the Grinch Stole Christmas, nearly every version Dicken’s The Christmas Carol, Home Alone 1 and 2 (the only two that count in my book), Meet the Fockers…I’m a Christmas movie geek.
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year?
Nope. Metal doors make it impossible.
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start?
Waking up to see Zena snuggling up to me and really warm weather!
10. Weekly goals:
-Get the tree up! (We’ve been lazy!)
Karen says
Hi Kate,
Always good to hear from you. What’s been keeping you busy? School?
Love to Zena.
Kate & Zena says
Well, let’s see, I went and had an EMG done on my wrists (which was uuuuuuber boring), went to the doctor, got my driver’s license, normal Zena stuff (of, course, now she’s becoming more obnoxious because it’s becoming winter). got cable installed in my bedroom (it’s wireless!)….and got an iPhone (!) which I now have to ban from my bedroom while it’s charging (is it just me or does the iPhone just not hold a good charge?) at night or I can’t sleep because I think about what I could be doing on my iPhone.
Oh, did I mention I got the iPhone on Thursday? Four days and it’s all ready banned from my room. Once I log off the computer, the phone stays downstairs. Not allowed upstairs anymore!
Larie says
1. Mood: Happy! Got a new haircut and feeling fab.
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep? I’d keep…uh…lipstick? Omg. I can’t believe I said that.
3. Do you have a favorite necklace? Yes.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? Modern! I’m not very good at thrift shopping or revamping vintage pieces, and it’s not really me.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year? At home, thankfully. I hate traveling during the holiday season! So hectic.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about? Matches freak me out.
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies? Not really. There are a few that are near and dear, though!
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? Nope.
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? Managing to get up on time on Monday morning, and having a game plan for the week.
10. Weekly goals: Finish some experiments, make it to all of my exercise classes!
Karen says
Hi Larie,
Oooh, do tell about your new haircut! 🙂
Allyson says
1. Mood: Burnt out… it’s only Monday and already I need a weekend!
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep? I think I’d give up eyeshadow, as much as it pains me to say it! I could still use liner and mascara creatively, right?
3. Do you have a favorite necklace? I usually go through phases with my jewelry… right now, my favorite necklace is a giant sparkly bib from F21!
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? As much as I love vintage influence, I often don’t have time to thrift, so most of my purchases are current.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year? In Chicago, with my family… won’t be traveling!
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about? I absolutely despise when people don’t squeeze tubes from the bottom. I get SO ANNOYED when I go to brush my teeth and my boyfriend has left a huge dent in the middle!
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies? Depends — I love old holiday movies like It’s a Wonderful Life! I prefer older movies in general.
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? Yes, if my boyfriend and I can find one that we agree on!
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? Getting up early enough to read and drink tea before work… and a drink from Starbucks. Got a free one today!
10. Weekly goals: Catch up on back-logged work, post regularly to my fledgling blog, clean out my car!
Karen says
Hi Allyson,
Hey, Forever 21 has some really fun jewelry! I have a few items from them that I absolutely love. Granted, they tend to break after a month, but it’s fun while it lasts.
Kalli says
1. Mood: Good! Watching the Blake Shelton Christmas Special with my mom
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep?
SO HARD. I’m a UD shadow addict, but I also know the power of a great lip color. So let’s say, if lip gloss is allowed, I’ll choose eyeshadow or if eyeliner is allowed, I’ll choose lipstick!
3. Do you have a favorite necklace?
I too have a silver heart Tiffany & Co necklace that my parents bought for me when I graduated college, I love it!
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style?
I like modern colors & styles, with a vintage fit
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year?
Looks like we’ll be in Houston with my uncle & his family
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about?
When the people at my office don’t wash their lunch dishes & untensils! I’m not your mother!
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies?
Yes! A Christmas Story is the end-all be-all for me
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year?
My mom hung one, so technically yes
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start?
Breakfast tacos! I had two potato & egg this morning and some coffee
10. Weekly goals: Get caught up on work stuff and play with my brand spankin’ new Canon Rebel DSLR that I got from QVC on Cyber Monday!
Karen says
Hi Kalli,
Enjoy your camera! I love Canon. 🙂
Monica says
Karen, I used to be driven batty with scheduling Kaiser appointments, especially when I was making them as a college student, trying to coordinate with visits home to Maryland.
Use kp.org! All your headaches will go away. The phone system’s a mess, but the online appointment schedule is such a blessing. The message system lets you know when lab results are in, too! No more headaches, no more tears.
Karen says
Hi Monica,
I’ve used it to refill prescriptions but never thought to use it for appointments simply because I’ve always done it by phone (*smacks forehead*). Hopefully it’ll make things less frustrating!
Stef Smith says
1. Mood: Happy! Started X-mas shopping today, drank lots of coffee, hung out with my cousin from AZ, I love today!
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep? Lipstick I think. I wear eyeshadow pretty much every day, but I very rarely wear lipstick. Not because I don’t love it, because I do, but I’m more of lipbalm girl.
3. Do you have a favorite necklace? Right now I really like this Gemini disc pendent that I bought for my brother (we’re twins) a few years ago for X-mas, but I loved it so I kept it for myself! ha ha ha It’s heavy and it’s on a leather cord, and it’s awesome!
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? Vintage. Especially with jewelry, vintage or estate jewelry drives me wild!
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year? X-mas Eve with my 92 year old Grandma, X-mas day with my in-laws, and the 26th with my family. We’re waiting an extra day so that my husband will be off work and will be able to be with us!
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about? If I spin around in one direction, I must spin around in the opposite direction. And you should see me eat a Kit Kat bar, it’s ridiculous! It has to be done in layers or else it’s just not good.
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies? YES! “White Chrismtas” and any version of “A Christmas Carol” I will watch a hundred times! Not a big fan of “It’s a Wonderful Life” but that’s just me.
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? No, we have a security door/screen door, so there’s no room for a wreath.
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? Mondays are always good days for me! But coffee, loud music, and Facebook!
10. Weekly goals: Wrap presents, get some exercise, try to get some relaxing in!
Abhipsa says
1. Mood: I started the day well but ended up with a splitting headache by the end of it. No idea why either.
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep?
I would keep lipsticks. I hardly get the time to do a proper eyeshadow routine anyway. And I have pretty eyes and great lashes – I can easily do with just eyeliner or even just concealer to even out and be fine. But lipstick makes me feel pulled together.
3. Do you have a favorite necklace?
Yes! Its a very large, very modern, very organic sterling silver pendant that I bought online from a merchant from Israel. It never fails to draw attention or compliments. Its a free-form design in various shades of black and shimmery gray stones/enamels.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style?
I’d say modern with some vintage/retro stuff. I am liking the current trend of fuller skirts and pretty dresses that flatter hourglass figures.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year?
With my family. They live in Boston. But we are all still waffling between us flying there and all of us flying somewhere nice and warm together.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about?
I think it is more about my mood – if I’m in a ‘mood’ then I’ll be irrational about everything. Otherwise, I prefer to think, nothing. 😀
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies?
Not really.
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? No. I’m thinking of making one to hang on my mantel though.
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? Quiet mornings and a hot hot shower. And a kiss from hub. 🙂
10. Weekly goals: Sort out a bunch of things I need to – over email/phone calls.
Rachael says
I know I’m late to the party but I’ve been very busy 🙂
1. Mood: Half Stressed, I have to finish this one project today but I’m sitting her procrastinating.
2. If you had to give up one, eyeshadow or lipstick, which would you keep? Lipstick, I wear my glasses almost daily so it doesn’t really matter what’s on my eyes.
3. Do you have a favorite necklace? The one my mom and dad had made for me for my wedding. It’s the diamond my mom has had for years and saved since she and my biological got divorced. It also has 3 sapphires atop of the diamond. I wear it almost every day.
4. Are you more into vintage or modern style? I like vintage styling with a modern touch. My wedding ring is the best example I have.
5. Where will you spending the holidays this year? So many places I’ve lost count. The one good part about my family only has one side of the family that we talk to, my husbands talks to every side.
6. What’s something you realize you’re irrational about? The dark. Between fears of getting mugged walking to my car after evening classes, some scary dog thing while walking the dog at night, and the Vashta Nerada (Doctor Who reference!)
7. Do you like cheesy holidays movies? Is there any other kind.
8. Will you be hanging a wreath on your door this year? Yep. It has green, blue, and purple ornaments with silver squiggles and jingle bells.
9. What are two things that always help your week get off to a good start? Kitty and Puppy snuggles, and a very large cup of strong black tea
10. Weekly goals: turn in my polar bear paper (finished but holding onto for dear life), online dating project (due Friday @6, halfway finished and procrastinating), homework (case study and review problems for genetics and reading for my deviant behavior class) and study for finals next monday and wednesday
