You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
[YAWN] Head wobbly. Eyelids…heavy. Me talk not good. Me talk not good at all.Must coffee… Yes, must coffee good jrjeklauio jaueisot uogvyio byp…
Oops, my bad! Passed out there for a second with my fingers on the keyboard.
Jeez, this coffee better kick in soon… 🙂
- The Thanksgiving party is potluck. What dish are you bringing?
My (world famous) roasted garlic mashed potatoes, a peach and blueberry cobbler and a bottle of red wine (maybe a nice Rioja…or a Primitivo or Zinfandel). - What’s your limit for a commute?
Oh, I’ve had some long ones before. I feel like my limit is just about an hour, door to door. I start getting reeeally cranky when I cross that one-hour threshold. - FLASH: You wake up one morning and discover that suddenly you can do three things really well. What are they?
- Manage my time. I become like a time management Jedi, able to juggle multiple projects without breaking a sweat.
- Freestyle rapping.
I become a polyglot freestyle rapper, able to spit beats in 10 of the world’s most popular languages…because you never know when/where you’ll be when someone challenges you to a street battle.
- Pick winning lottery numbers.
‘Nuff said.
I know that doesn’t sound like an exciting natural ability, but it sure would come in handy for me right now…
- If your life were made into a movie, what film genre would it be?
A Bollywood musical, with dozens of costume changes and a HUGE dance finale. - Name an animal that reminds you of someone.
Elephants always remind me of El Hub.(They’re his favorite animal.)
- Something you fell in love with as a child/teen and still love today?
The movie Casablanca. I had the poster up on the walls in my room all through high school, and to this day it’s one of my all-time favorite flicks.I love everything about it — the chemistry between Bogie and Bergman, the crisp, snappy dialogue. It’s filled with so many memorable moments for me. (“Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life.”)
- FLASH: We’re at the MAC counter stocking up on standbys. What do you get?
A bottle of Fix+, a bottle of Cleanse Off Oil Tranquil (wait, make that two), a tube of Strobe Cream and a pan of Concrete Eyeshadow. - How long does it usually take you to really wake up in the morning?
Honestly, a good 90 minutes after the alarm sounds. That’s how long it usually takes me to feel like I’m firing on all my mental cylinders.Really, it’s a miracle I’m able to walk and talk at all right after getting up.
- Weekly goals:
This week I want to try a couple of new writing techniques I’ve been reading about — 1. challenging myself to only think about a single topic for a set amount of time, and 2. reducing my rules when I write.Oh, and I intend to eat a spinach salad every single day…
No real reason why. Just somethin’ to do.
Morning! Guess who’s coffee just kicked in?!
Oh, yeah. I almost forgot. I picked up these four-drawer carts at Target over the weekend…
Toot toot! Now boarding the train for Organize-a-ville.
I’m using one for beauty essentials (the things I reach for daily, like foundations, powders, concealers, hair styling products, stuff like that), and the other one for photography equipment.
“Meow?”
Oh, Tabs has a question for you… He’d like to know if you’ll fill out today’s Monday Poll. 🙂

2. The Thanksgiving party is potluck. What dish are you bringing?
Roasted brussel sprouts and amaretto soaked white chocolate covered cherries.
3. What’s your limit for a commute?

4. You wake up one morning and discover that suddenly you can do three things really well. What are they?
1. Play the spoons like a virtuoso. What a great party trick!
2. Budgeting. That would be a great thing to be skilled with.

Hi Hillary,
What kind of liner do you use? Have you ever tried lining your eyes with an powder eyeshadow and an angled brush? I find that if you’re having trubs with traditional pencil/gel/liquid liner, using a powder shadow and a brush is the easiest, fastest and most forgiving way.
Katherine G says
1. Mood:
~A little tired and sore. I did a 3 hour workout yesterday and I’m feeling it today! Today will end up being a yoga and core day.
2. The Thanksgiving party is potluck. What dish are you bringing?
~We are having a Thanksgiving party at work since a bunch of us are stuck working Thanksgiving. I am bringing a green bean casserole of sorts and bread.
3. What’s your limit for a commute?
~With my current job, since it normally takes 25 minutes to get to work, I get cranky being stuck in traffic for an hour. However, with a job I am looking at, I could have up to a 2 hour commute depending on where I was stationed.
4. You wake up one morning and discover that suddenly you can do three things really well. What are they?
1) Gymnastics – I did some as a kid but was never great at it. I would love to be able to do flips and vaulting, and also to not have to work quite as hard at the inverted yoga poses.
2) Be more efficient at putting up my hair in complicated updo’s or even a french braid. If my hair is freshly washed, it’s so slippery and thick that it won’t do much of anything easily.
3) Learn new things more quickly – sometimes it takes me a bit to pick something up, sometimes it doesn’t. I wish I was more consistent with that!
5. If your life were made into a movie, what film genre would it be?
~Definitely action, because I like to do so many different things in my life.
6. Name an animal that reminds you of someone.
~German shepards remind me of my friend Lindsey, probably because she has 3 of them.
7. Something you fell in love with as a child/teen and still love today?
~Music. It’s something I can’t live without, for sure, and I still love a lot of the bands I grew up listening to, like U2, Godsmack, Disturbed, Evanescence, AC/DC, Scorpions, and Skid Row.
8. We’re at the MAC counter stocking up on standbys. What do you get?
~Hmmm…I would probably check out some more eyeshadows; that Strobe cream sounds pretty awesome, and I would want to look at some bronzers/shimmery face powders.
9. How long does it usually take you to really wake up in the morning?
~When I have to get up for work at 4:30am, I don’t feel really awake until about 7:30am. When I wake up on a day off, usually about a half hour before I can spring out of bed and get started with the day.
10. Weekly goals
~Make sure I’m prepared for the written and physical tests that I am taking on Saturday and next Monday.
~Stay positive, and keep doing yoga every day to stay relaxed.
Karen says
Hi Katherine,
I kind of love that you mentioned Skid Row. I used to have I Remember You on vinyl (OMG) and played it out circa 1989!
Good luck on your tests. You’ll do great. 🙂
Katherine G says
Thanks! Oh, and I finally got the Goody Spin Pins after reading your posts on them. Haven’t tried them yet, but I think they will be the trick for getting my thick, slightly wavy, slippery hair into a neat bun. I got Kelly Clarkson’s new song “Don’t Rush” after you posted it on here. I love Target, I think they have nicer stuff than Walmart at times, though Walmart has more makeup. “I Remember You” is a great song!
Karen says
Yay! I hope you like them. Those spin pins have saved my butt so many times. If two don’t hold your hair try adding a third or even a fourth one into the mix.
Glad you got Kelly Clarkson’s new song…I’ve been playing it on repeat here at home.
Oh, and I’m also glad to know I’m not the only person who listened to Skid Row back in the day. 😉

Hi Lolmd,
Have a good week!
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
1. Mood:
Good! I had a nice weekend that included a getaway to Vail,CO for a friend’s birthday.
2. The Thanksgiving party is potluck. What dish are you bringing?
Corn Pudding and Mashed Potatoes. Those are my specialties.
3. What’s your limit for a commute?
I agree with you about an hour. Something about a commute that’s over a hour is just excessive. One of the reasons I quit my old job was because they hospital I worked for moved WAAAAAYYYY out East and my commute went from 25 both ways minutes to 30 minutes there and 60 minutes home due to traffic. Add in a grocery stop and it was just getting exhausting.
4. You wake up one morning and discover that suddenly you can do three things really well. What are they?
Sing, paint and run. Obviously I wish I was more artistic and athletic.
5. If your life were made into a movie, what film genre would it be?
A Rom Com. They make me happy and there just aren’t enough good ones these days. Instead of a touching or funny story about a couple they always go for the trite ensemble casts like New Years Eve. Nothing will be another Love Actually so they need to stop trying.
6. Name an animal that reminds you of someone.
Does my puppy count? One of them looks like a fluffy little Bear Cub.
7. Something you fell in love with as a child/teen and still love today?
Horses. I rode for years and even though I don’t anymore (it’s expensive dude!) I still love them and hope to get back into it someday.
8. We’re at the MAC counter stocking up on standbys. What do you get?
I actually don’t use a ton of MAC but I love the glosses. I’d probably just grab a few of those. Or brushes.
9. How long does it usually take you to really wake up in the morning?
It depends on if I take a shower immediately or not. If I do I’m usually awake after it. If not it takes one glass of Crystal Light with caffeine.
10. Weekly goals:
Go through my closet dresser and get rid of stuff I don’t wear anymore. Get my outdoor cushions put away once they dry out from the weekend snow. Clean out the fridge. Obviously it’s time for some fall cleaning.
Karen says
Hi Leah,
So with you on those ensemble movies! I couldn’t even bring myself to watch New Year’s Eve (and I usually love me some cheesy movies!).
I actually watched one with Catherine Zeta-Jones over the weekend that was really good called The Rebound: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1205535/
Got it off of Netflix and enjoyed it quite a bit.
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
Karen, thanks for the recommendation! I love me some CZJ. New Years Eve was as bad as you imagined. The only good part was when Lea Michele sang at the end.
Karen says
You’re welcome. It was a sweet, interesting story and even El Hub didn’t mind it so much, LOL! 🙂
TOHNIA says
1. Mood: Crummy! Aunt Flo is visiting, so now I’m feeling exhausted and run down/crampy (I’m Anemic, so this time of month is killer on my energy levels). I’m heading home for a nap and some Advil!
2. The Thanksgiving party is potluck. What dish are you bringing? Apple pie and Caesar Salad!
3. What’s your limit for a commute? 3 hours. After that I get antsy and cranky because I start to get tired. I commute home every few weeks or so, and if it takes longer then the usual 2 hours I get grumpy.
4. You wake up one morning and discover that suddenly you can do three things really well. What are they? First, the ability to run! I wish I could run so badly, but I have horrible knees, so that’s not going to happen. Second, I would love to be able to speak every language in the world. If that’s not possible, I’d settle for complete fluency in Mandarin, Vietnamese, Korean, and better fluency in Cantonese (which was my native language until I was 6).
5. If your life were made into a movie, what film genre would it be? Hong Kong style comedy!
6. Name an animal that reminds you of someone. Monkey’s remind me of my little cousin, since I call him my monkey. <3

8. We’re at the MAC counter stocking up on standbys. What do you get? I'm not a huge MAC fan, but I'd stock up on duochrome shadows! I'm headed to a counter to get color matched for foundation soon. Any recommendations for medium coverage foundation good for oily/combo/acne prone skin?
9. How long does it usually take you to really wake up in the morning? Depends on the day! But usually an hour or so. Nothing computes before then!
10. Weekly goals: To start working out again and to cut back on the coffee. Otherwise, to have my room/laptop keyboard completely clean! Its pretty grotty in between these keys…
Karen says
Hi Tohnia,

4. You wake up one morning and discover that suddenly you can do three things really well. What are they?
#1: Running! I would probably be a better runner if I worked at it more, but I would love to wake up and be a marathoner!

Kate & Zena says
1. Mood:
ANGRY. Mother Nature has decided to give me my most hated weather; so loathed is this weather that I don’t even call it by it’s name. It is merely known as The S-WORD. I HATE IT.
2. The Thanksgiving party is potluck. What dish are you bringing?
Homemade apple pie with homemade caramel filling (okay, I cheat with the crust. It’s bought.) I am planning on attempting apple crisp though this week, if I can get my hands on some Granny Smiths. Like apple crisp?
3. What’s your limit for a commute?
A hour. I seriously hate long distance anything. I get antsy, my butt starts to hurt, my legs and my feet start to twitch, and I JUST CANNOT GET COMFORTABLE. I DO NOT travel well. By the time I get to the neurologist every three months, I am racing out of the truck, stomping my feet, bouncing up and down and getting all of that pent up energy out of my system. I may sleep for 3/4 of the ride, but that last 1/4 is hell on wheels. I guess I’m a human Zena, I don’t travel in cars well at all. >.<
4. You wake up one morning and discover that suddenly you can do three things really well. What are they?
Singing high soprano, speaking languages fluently and when I think of doing something, I do it right then and there, especially when it comes to cleaning and exercising (I procrastinate way too much.)
5. If your life were made into a movie, what film genre would it be?
One of those inspiring dramas like The Blind Side with a giant helping of sarcastic humor on the side. Well, my parents were told just to institutionalize me and my mom basically said, "Eff you."
6. Name an animal that reminds you of someone.
Wolves remind me of my momma and me. We have the wolf pack mentality. We tend to stick together like two wolves hunting together, and then you add Zena and you really have wolves. 😉
7. Something you fell in love with as a child/teen and still love today?
50s silhouettes as they're so much more flattering on my petite, pencil frame. AND THEY FIT.
8. We’re at the MAC counter stocking up on standbys. What do you get?
I wouldn't know as I've never tried MAC! I'd have to try them all!
9. How long does it usually take you to really wake up in the morning?
Depends on the day. Anywhere from 30 minutes to an two hours (experimentation day!), but you have to know my "mornings" are all y'alls afternoons or evenings. XD
10. Weekly goals:
-Make apple crisp.
-Go. To. Library. I'm going nuts from no books.
-Make sure my friend doesn't do anything stupid (she's in a relatively delicate situation.)

1. Mood:
Tired. I’ve been running around nonstop all day and just got home.
2. The Thanksgiving party is potluck. What dish are you bringing?
I always cook up some Trader Joe’s Harvest Grains and make a salad out of them by tossing in whatever veggies sound good. I think maybe some roasted butternut squash would be nice.
3. What’s your limit for a commute?
The last time I had a commute it would always take over an hour one way and that was enough to make me a very cranky girl, so I guess I need less than an hour.
4. You wake up one morning and discover that suddenly you can do three things really well. What are they?
Sing, organize, and multitask.
5. If your life were made into a movie, what film genre would it be?
I’d love to say romance but I’m gonna have to go with drama.

7. Something you fell in love with as a child/teen and still love today?
Got my first pet at the age of five, a poodle-terrier mix named Snoopy, and I’ve been obsessed with animals ever since.
8. We’re at the MAC counter stocking up on standbys. What do you get?
Lipglasses in Oh Baby and Nymphette.

I usually wake up, doze off again for another 45 minutes or so, then get out of bed, and then start to feel awake about an hour or so later.
10. Weekly goals:
Just try to be really gentle with myself to gear up for what promises to be a very emotional holiday season.

1. Mood: really happy. Must be because I had today off, and not because my mother is arriving on Thursday…
2. The Thanksgiving party is potluck. What dish are you bringing?
My sweet potato casserole with the little marshmallows on top. I add coconut, crushed pineapple and little chunks of crystallized ginger. Yum.
3. What’s your limit for a commute?
Depends on the job. My day job has a 10-min commute. But I have driven 2-1/2 hours for gigs in Palm Springs and loved every minute of driving over the mountains and through the desert. But driving in traffic, not my idea of fun.
4. You wake up one morning and discover that suddenly you can do three things really well. What are they?
Do the I-dream-of-Jeanie thing with my nose to clean the house!
Be able to do complex math problems in my head.
Speak a foreign language fluently, not just tourista talk.
5. If your life were made into a movie, what film genre would it be?
Bollywood! For sure! Lots of make-up, costumes, and dancing. I’d do the henna for all the cast of thousands!
6. Name an animal that reminds you of someone.
Tiger. My hubby looks a bit like a tiger.
7. Something you fell in love with as a child/teen and still love today?
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norman Juster; it still picks me up when I read it.
8. We’re at the MAC counter stocking up on standbys. What do you get?
Don’t really hang at MAC counters since they’re a bit beyond my budget, but I understand the brushes are to die for — so I’d stock up.
9. How long does it usually take you to really wake up in the morning?
It’s very odd, but 2 years ago I just started waking up at 7:00am. I mean, no alarm clock, just wide awake. Hubby is not a morning person so this has perplexed him — and me (the former night owl). I use the extra hour to walk for half an hour and read my morning inspirations.
10. Weekly goals:
Clean the house for my mother’s visit.
Write a blog post every day for NaBloPoMo.
Tiffany Martin says
1. Mood: FANCY

I’d bring these: http://pinterest.com/pin/516647388472071707/
3. What’s your limit for a commute?
I’m growly after about 45 minutes, but I can endure much longer if it’s an infrequent commute. If it’s daily then 45 is about it.
4. You wake up one morning and discover that suddenly you can do three things really well. What are they?
A. Handbalancing. I did circus school during my remission and it was very rewarding but hard work. If magic can cut corners so be it.
B. Real estate. I need to learn more about it but it’s easier if I just know. I can buy ALL THE THINGS!
C. Medicine. Calling Dr. Cakepie… haha… Even if I never became a Doctor I’d want to know all the stuff they know about human bodies. We’re in them our whole lives shouldn’t we know how they work?
5. If your life were made into a movie, what film genre would it be? Cerebral/philosophical. It’d be about the relationship between fear and freedom, but also moments of beauty and of despair. My movie would have scenes that made you question everything!
6. Name an animal that reminds you of someone.
I think of Jellyfish and I think of my friend Alex. There was this time he was playing the videogame “Ecco the Dolphin” and everytime he hit jellyfish he would yell “Shut up, Jellyfish!” it’s a dumb thing to laugh about but I can’t help it. It’s so hilarious.
7. Something you fell in love with as a child/teen and still love today?
Cute things and princess stuff. I still want to be a princess but unfortunately it’s a job that’s being phased out.
8. We’re at the MAC counter stocking up on standbys. What do you get?
Oh this is so sad, I’d have no idea because I’ve never bought anything from MAC because it’s so pricey. I’d love to try them though, so I get whatever the counterperson convinces me to buy!
9. How long does it usually take you to really wake up in the morning?
During remission I jump right up like a sprout and do a few pushups. During now? I take at least one hour and usually several. Not to worry, I’ll be back to the way I was and make everyone jealous of my many pushups.
10. Weekly goals:
This week: Get my Depo shot (; , Finish at least a few crafting projects so my apartment doesn’t look barren and hospital dull, get my blog sale started (oh boy oh boy!). Ideally I’d also be able to try out the new stuff I just hauled from The Body Shop but that’s gonna take more than a week.

So, this is more like a Tuesday thing for me…..
1. Mood: Real good, I have been working day shifts, so going to bed early and getting up in time to watch the sun turn all the mountains hot pink will put anyone in a great mood!
2. The Thanksgiving party is potluck. What dish are you bringing? Probably a dessert, that’s what I am known for…although I am equally good at savoury stuff too.
3. What’s your limit for a commute? Well, my commute to work now is 1 hour door to door and covers almost 90 kms of highway (sometimes is super snowy conditions.). I guess no more than that, but that being said I live so rural that sometimes it takes 1.5 hrs to get to a friend’s house for dinner. (When you live in the north, and there is almost 100 kms between towns long drives are just par for the course.) (Sometimes I’ll drive a 10 hour round trip just to go to Costco.)
4. You wake up one morning and discover that suddenly you can do three things really well. What are they? Draw and paint (I’ve always wanted to be artistic like that.) Play guitar, and understand computers a little better….still getting to know my MacBook.
5. If your life were made into a movie, what film genre would it be? Sports-action movie…please, no drama!
6. Name an animal that reminds you of someone. Rabbits remind me of my BFF.
7. Something you fell in love with as a child/teen and still love today? Snowboarding…it’s my passion.
8. We’re at the MAC counter stocking up on standbys. What do you get? Paint in Sublime Nature, blush in Sunbasque, eye kohl in Blooz and and eyeshadow in Bisque.
9. How long does it usually take you to really wake up in the morning? About 2 hours, no joke, my man always makes fun of me.
10. Weekly goals: Purge some more stuff from my cluttered house and stop having late night snacks.
