You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
[DEEP BREATH] Not bad. A bit of a caffeine hangover and a little tinge of overwhelmed panic gnawing at my edges, but I’ll get a grip. I’m a little freaked out about my extra long to-do list today, but all we can do is do is our best, right? Just gotta keep breathing and take one task at a time. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.Nix that. I know I can, I know I can, I know I can.
- What time did you get up this morning?
At 6:30 when my iPhone’s alarm went off. Unusually, my tabby alarm clock must have malfunctioned because it usually gets me up even earlier than that. You see, it’s powered by lurvies and gravy, and if I don’t remember to charge it up to 100% before bed, it goes off really early the next morning.
- Are you dressing up for Halloween this year?
You know it! 🙂 Although I’m still trying to decide on a costume… I’m leaning toward this Katy Perry getup, though, because I love the blue wig! - What are three things you absolutely love about yourself?
1. That I’m not afraid to change.
2. That I have a creative side.
3. That I tend to see the best in people. - On average, how much time do you spend on the Internet each day?
Oh, man! One, carry the two… I don’t know, maybe 10 hours? Probably more than the average person, I imagine. - What doesn’t kill us makes us…
…completely and totally exhausted! LOL! And wiser, as long as we’re paying attention. - How are your pumpkin carving skills?
Weak but hopefully improving. They have yet to reach their full potential, as I’ve only carved one pumpkin in my life, and that was more than 10 years ago.My parents never let me and my brother do the carving… It was always Dad’s job, and he’d only let us watch. I think he was afraid we’d accidentally cut off our fingers.
- Scariest movie?
Rosemary’s Baby. Holy crap! Every time I see that movie, I feel like I need to go to church. - What’s something you hope people say about you?
That I’m a nice, hard-working girl with a good sense of humor. - Weekly goals:
To make a gratitude list each and every morning, and to go to my first Dailey Method fitness class. It’s supposed to be kinda like Pilates and really good for core strength. I took advantage of one of those Living Social deals for one month of unlimited classes.
I also really need to get back in the habit of tracking my workouts and meals with the My Fitness Pal app… Been slacking lately, but I’m not gonna beat myself up about it (seriously, what’s the point?).
Hey, hon. How’d you sleep? Can I get you a refill on your coffee?
I had a pretty nice weekend. Brunch on Saturday with a friend, and then afterward I got to be her “makeup advisor,” helping her shop for a few things at Sephora and a MAC Pro Store. Then yesterday El Hub and I did our grocery shopping and pretty much just relaxed.
It was epic. 🙂
Now, I’m watching coverage of the big storm out east. I can’t believe how bad it is… It’s horrible! They’re calling it a perfect storm… Yeah, more like perfectly terrible.
If you live on the East Coast or anywhere in the storm’s path, be careful out there.
In other news, it’s the start of a new week. If you get a chance today, come say hi, and let me know how you’re doing in today’s Monday Poll.
To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

Hi Marina,
Good luck with the shoe and coat hunt this week! I hope you find something cute and warm. Take it easy this week!
Marina says
Thanks, Karen! I hope so,too. The snow and the fact that it gets dark at 5 pm (we changed the time yesterday) doesn’t help.. wah.
Karen says
Wah is right! It gets really dark here too (no snow, though!) at around 5:30. We haven’t changed our clocks yet, but it’s only a matter of time. I think next weekend my priority is to buy more lamps, LOL! I can’t deal with it being so gloomy inside, ya know?

Karen says
Hi Advah,
Oh, good luck on finding new place! That can be so stressful. Are you staying in the same neighborhood, or moving someplace new?
Advah says
Thank you, I very much need luck with that! I’d love to stay in the same neighbourhood (lovely area and close to work and my yoga studio), but flats are expensive here.
How have you been doing?? Work got so busy I had to take some time away from the internet, but it feels good to be back! 🙂
Karen says
Glad to see you back! 🙂
Oh, and I’m totally with you on needing to live somewhere that has easy access/no obstacles to the place where you like to work out! That’s high on my priority list, too. Hopefully you’ll find something soon. When do you plan on moving?
Things have been okay. Last week was really hard (my best friend’s mom passed away; went to the funeral, and it shook me up quite a bit), but this week is looking up. I’m feeling much more steady, and trying to remember to be grateful for all the little things.
Advah says
Oh I’m so sorry to hear about your friend’s mum 🙁 I went through a similar two months ago and it is a very upsetting experience. It also made me randomly pick up the phone at work to call my parents and tell them again how much I loved them. Being grateful is probably the best way to get something out of a very sad situation.
Glad to hear this week is better though!

2. What time did you get up today? 8:00AM and spent the next hour deciding on if I should cancel my afternoon and evening appointments… I did.
3. Are you dressing up for Halloween this year? No. Gave my daughter my Sally outfit from Nightmare Before Christmas. Her boyfriend borrowed my husband’s Jack outfit. They are too cute.
4. What are three things you absolutely love about yourself? My mind, my strong hands and skinny waist. I’m so superficial. I really should develop a deeper appreciation for qualities that grow stronger with age like compassion, kindness, thoughtfulness, etc.
5. On average, how much time do you spend on the Internet each day? Oooo depends. Usually about 90 minutes. Since I’m not working today, I’ll probably spend 4 hours wasting time.
6. What doesn’t kill us makes us… Stronger. I say this along with some choice expletives every time I have to ride up a large hill. Not while spinning or mashing up the hill. I’m too busy trying to breath. The expletive laden phrase spills out of me like vomit when I first see the hill or at the very bottom of it.

Tiffany Martin says
Thanks you two (: I’ll be okay just having a rough patch, we all know what that’s like. At least I’ve been safe from Sandy (:
Karen says
I’m glad to hear that you stayed safe in the storm. I was watching the coverage last night and was so worried about all the gals on the East Coast! Hopefully you’ll have a good day today.

You’re sweet, thank you (:

7. How are your pumpkin carving skills?
Horrible! I couldn’t carve a square if my life depended on it!

Karen says
Hi Emily,
I’m so glad you enjoy the Monday Poll. 🙂 It’s always good to see you here!
Your Halloween costume sounds cute. What color is your flapper dress?
Emily says
Seriously these polls are my Monday highlights!
My dress is black and I have a giant bejeweled headband to snazz it up!
Karen says
How cute! Your dress has those layers of fringe, right? Whenever I think of flappers I always think of those fringe dresses.
Sarah says
Hi Karen! First (or maybe second?) time commenter here, but longtime reader. I absolutely adore your blog! I just wanted to give you props and support for trying out the Dailey Method classes! I bought a Groupon over the summer and just started to going to a nearby studio in Los Gatos. You CAN do it, and you will be so proud of yourself when you feel your body getting stronger and more balanced. Have a wonderful day, dear!
Karen says
Thanks, Sarah! I’m really nervous about going because I have absolutely no core strength. But I guess you have to start somewhere, right? Was your first class very hard?
Sarah says
It was hard for me, yes, because I also have poor core strength. I went to one of their “principles” classes (not all locations have them, I think) and let the instructor know that I was new. She was super helpful – all of them are! – and corrected my form throughout the class. You just take it slow and do what you can, getting used to the poses and different types of muscle engagement. I still take it slow after going for a few weeks, but I’ve been trying to push myself a little here and there and it’s definitely paying off. You can do it, girl! 🙂
Karen says
Thanks, boo-boo. I need the encouragement! I think the one near my house has a principles class, so I’ll try to go to that one. So terrified! I can barely do sit-ups!! But I know it’ll be good. I’ve heard that you can really see a difference quite quickly, which is what I’m looking forward to. 🙂

6. What doesn’t kill us makes us…drive ourselves bonkers. Make sure to take good care of yourself so that you can take good care of others.

9. What’s something you hope people say about you? That I’m good at giving advice.
10. Weekly goals: Fly to Chicago on Thursday for work. Try not to freak myself out too much about that–it’s going to take days for the airlines to straighten out. On a smaller level I need to do at least 1 yoga DVD since my gym is closed due to the storm.
Karen says
Hi Leah,
Hope things are okay for you and that the storm isn’t too bad. I was watching the news this morning and the airline situation out here is wackadoo! Keeping my fingers crossed for you…what are you up to today since work was cancelled?

Kim says
I didn’t expect to see the List up so early today. Yay!
1. Mood: Hunky Dory.
2. What time did you get up today? About 6AM. My clock is set 12 minutes early so I don’t have to feel like I’m getting up at 5-something, and so I can hit snooze a couple of times. 🙂

Oh no, back problems are the worst. 🙁 I hope that the “good” meds keep the pain away today. Are the kitties/divas being nice to you? I hope so.
Ruchita says
Luckily, the kitties are being good. I got snuggles from Ella this morning before I got up, so that was nice. 🙂

4. What are three things you absolutely love about yourself? I make a sincere effort to not judge anyone (we all have a story and something worthwhile to say and do). I care really deeply about my family. I am a treasure trove of lazy beauty tips and trick – everyone asks me about how to make their lipstick last longer and how to use dry shampoo.
5. On average, how much time do you spend on the Internet each day?

Yogirl says
Hi Karen, I watch crime stories on TV e.g. CSI NY.
A couple of weeks ago we discussed about foundation. I like Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation because it’s really liquid.
I think you should be Kate Perry for Halloween, her songs are great!
Raven says
1. Mood:
Dead. Tired! I had a pretty rough start to my long Halloween weekend; Friday I stayed up all damn night, so I dragged my ass all day Saturday, but hit the hay early and only slept in till noon Sunday, so i thought I’d have my shizz together. Guess not.Stayed up late last night and had to be late for first class 😛
2. What time did you get up today?
Nine o’clock. AM!
3. Are you dressing up for Halloween this year?

Hi Katherine,
Oh boy. Will you be driving to work? I hope that the roads won’t be completely cray!
Katherine G says
My fiance was going to drive me in, since his truck is 4 wheel drive and my little Toyota Echo would be having a heck of a time making it down the highway. This storm is looking pretty bad – and of course it’s going to be at its worst when we all go to work in the morning! The highway should be ok – it’s the country back roads that will be really bad. I hope you have a great Halloween!

6. What doesn’t kill us makes us… weaker. Seriously, what hurts us leaves us emotionnally drained, and learning from it takes time and effort. I think people who believe that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger fail to realize that building an armour around your ego to protect yourself from getting hurt again is not a healthy way to manage the difficulties of life. It just makes you isolated and unable to really bond with people.

7. How are your pumpkin carving skills?: Nonexistent. I’ve never done it before. I just help to scoop out the inside and bake the pumpkin seeds.
8. Scariest movie?: The Czech movie “Neco z Alenky”. NEVER WATCH IT. It’s a long and pointless movie (and the narration is annoying), but the depictions of Wonderland (especially the rabbit) are horrifying. The stop-motion animation is extremely disturbing. In terms of realistically “scary” movies, “Requiem for a Dream” does it. It’s the best anti-drug campaign ever.
