You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
Ya know, I’m actually doing pretty good. I made a little progress on the home front over the weekend (more on that in a sec), so that gets a big sigh of relief, ahhhh. - How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ’em from head to toe?
You bet I would! Let’s do this mo’ fo’! As far as I’m concerned, the more sequins, the better. 🙂 Assuming I’m also wearing a fierce pair of shoes, because the footwear must be worthy of the outfit; otherwise, I see no point in said bedazzlement. - Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians?
I wish I knew the real story of how my parents met. Every time I’ve ever asked my mom, she’s given me some vague answer about how they met in college…And? And what, Mom? How did you meet? Where did you meet? What was your first date like?
Of course, since I can never get a straight answer out of her, my overactive imagination concocts something soapy and scandalous.
Hmm… On second thought, maybe I don’t want to know, LOL!
- What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets?
If I could, I’d fill my plastic pumpkin with Mini Snickers, pink Mentos (just the pink ones), popcorn-flavored Jelly Belly beans, peanut M&M’s (with Tabs’ picture printed on them, of course), Sour Patch Kids and Twix. And I’d leave out the Smarties (blech!), Swedish Fish, licorice and Tootsie Rolls. Thank you! 🙂
- Who’s the last person spoke with on the phone?
Mi madre! She’s trying to get me to go wine tasting with her, of all things… - If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which magazine would it be?
Um…Cat Fancy? Please don’t judge, LOL! - Unicorn or pegasus?
Ooh! — that’s a toughie. With the pegasus, you get free air travel, but I bet there’s a lot of upkeep involved caring for the wings.Plus, where do you park a pegasus? It’s not like they have special pegasus parking at Trader Joe’s, and do you have to land and take off from an airport?
I guess I’d probably go with the unicorn… They are able to teleport once a day, and that’s pretty handy.
- What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair?
The shortest was an awful cropped cut back in the sixth grade (not my idea, btw! When I grew boobs, my parents suddenly decided I needed a boy haircut). The longest I’ve ever had it was in high school, and it hung all the way down to my bum.
- What do you do to relax after a stressful day?
I like to take a long, hot shower, make myself a cup of tea, and if I’m hungry, have a yummy meal with veggies and fresh bread or pasta. Then, a movie on Netflix, a good book, and/or an at-home mani/pedi. - Weekly goals:
One thing at a time. That’s my only goal, really — that I focus on one thing at a time. If I can do that, then I know I can get through my the most important things on my long to-do list.
Hey, sweet friend. How YOU doing?! Did you have a good weekend?
Mine was pretty good.. Actually, really good. I got in some hard-core relaxing (I know that sounds funny…), and like I mentioned a minute ago, made some progress on a home project, meaning that I actually got out and looked at dining room tables.
I think I’m this close to finally pulling the trigger on a honey-colored mango wood one from Crate and Barrel. It’s just a basic rectangular table. No flourish at all, which is what I want.
I also stopped by Home Depot to get some paint swatches because I’m thinking about painting the dining room. It’s sort of an eggshell white right now, as are all the walls, but I’m thinking about different shades of light blue.
If you happen to have a good eye for interior design, I have a question for you. Does the size of the room have any bearing on the size of table you should get? How much space should you leave around the table, between the table and the walls?
I can’t figure out if I should get a smaller or a larger table. I’m drawn to a larger one because I could use it as a work space for projects, but it would take up most of the room…
Hmm… While I continue pondering this question of profound global importance (not), do you have a minute to fill out this week’s Monday poll? I hope so. I’d love to hear from you. 🙂
To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

Hyzenthlay says
1. Mood: Happy and relieved – I did the Nike Women’s Half-Marathon yesterday 🙂 I was 30 minutes slower than two years ago (ugh), but I got a dime-sized blister on the inside of the ball of my left foot and hit the wall HARD in mile 9.
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe? I don’t really wear sequins . . . I love glitter and shimmer, though!
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians? No, actually. I know about how they met, how quickly things moved once they met (very quickly), etc. 🙂
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone? My boyfriend, just after I got into the Finisher’s Village yesterday 🙂
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets? Most – Snickers, least – candy corn, wax lips, marshmallows
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be? Inspiring Teachers of the World 🙂 or something like that . . .
7. Unicorn or pegasus? Unicorns. Unless I can have a unicorn with wings. Then both 🙂
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair? Shortest – pixie cut when I was graduating from college, longest – down nearly to my butt while in high school.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day? Come home, pet my dogs, cuddle with them (and my boyfriend if he’s home) on the couch.
10. Weekly goals: Continue stretching, maybe get a bit of a jog in, finish the week strong, eat well, and recover from the half-marathon! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Hyzenthlay,
Congrats on doing the half-marathon! That’s awesome. 🙂 Any other races lined up for the next few months?
Hyzenthlay says
Nope! 🙂 I’ve done three “races” – a 5k, and the Nike half twice. Hoping this time I’ll keep with the running! I like how much like swimming it is (solo, mental time).
Karen says
You should do the Bay to Breakers here in SF! It’s not as crazy at it used to be when I did them in the late ’90s, but it’s still a neat race. It’s 7.25 miles, and it starts in downtown SF and ends at Ocean Beach.
Hyzenthlay says
I’ve definitely heard about Bay to Breakers 🙂 perhaps I’ll give it a shot in the future. Have you considered doing the Nike Women’s before?
Karen says
Periodically I’ll have a really great 7-mile run and I’ll think about doing another half, but then I come to my senses, LOL! I love distance running, but I think my max is 8-9 miles. Anything more than that and I go crazy. When I did the SF Half I broke down at mile 10. I was running and crying…it was a HOT MESS.
Hyzenthlay says
Oh, I totally hit the wall in mile 9. I hurt everywhere, the hills were still going, and I still had the uphill in Golden Gate Park to get through. I pulled out my phone and read the comments people had left on my auto-postings that Nike had set up on Facebook as I made it through certain milestones. Then I recited them in my head for the rest of the run. I know I wouldn’t have quit, but I don’t know how I would have gotten through the rest without those words of encouragement!
Gloria says
1. Mood: Anxious and excited but stressed.
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe? I’m a fan of strategic sequins placements. Cuter on accessories IMO.
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians? I feel like I know them all. My parents are rather un-Asian in how open they are about their past, their thoughts, their moods, etc., so I know practically every detail!
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone? My sister. She was upset that I woke her and her kitties up from their naps.
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets? Most favorite? Kit Kat, Twix, any type of gummy candies. Least favorite: CANDY CORN! Those things are atrocious.
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be? Nylon! They’re hip without being hipster!
7. Unicorn or pegasus? Pegasus. I wouldn’t mind hitching a ride off my pegasus, but I would never ever want to burden my unicorn.
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair? Boy short when I was 2-4. This lady at my dad’s company was obsessed with cutting my hair. Longest? A bit past my mid-back when I was 13 or 14. I cut off 12 inches and it was still long.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day? I watch The Office. Comedies always relaxes me. Plus I always fall asleep faster when the TV is on.

Have fun writing this week! I hope it goes smoothly. 🙂
Let says
1. Mood: sleepy, but somehow energized

4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone? A MAC MUA to RSVP for Glamour Daze launch party yesterday.
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets? I don’t really do Halloween, but in general, Reese’s is always a good choice 😀

7. Unicorn or pegasus? Pegasus all the way!
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair? Shortest: I guess when i was 4-5 years old? My hair only reached 3/4 of my neck at that time. Longest: 2 months ago. I didn’t cut or trim my hair for nearly 6 months and it reached half of my back.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day? Internet or read books.
10. Weekly goals: Survive tomorrow’s career fair and Thursday’s midterm!

Kind of off topic but I saw a movie over the weekend that you might like called Columbus Circle. Have you seen it? It’s a crime thriller with Selma Blair and Giovanni Ribisi.
Nikki says
1. Mood: Creative! I’m not sure whether to paint, paint my nails, make some graphics, or draw something first!
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe?

Vogue! Everyone looks at Vogue.
7. Unicorn or pegasus?
Pegasus! I love their wings…

Longest – it’s the longest it’s ever been now, just above the line of my pants.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day?
Turn on the Pandora Zen Garden (Tranquility Series) station, go on Pinterest, and light some candles! Maybe grab a snack.
10. Weekly goals:
Blog as much as possible, be happy, smile!
Karen says
Great goals this week, Nikki. YOu have a good one!
Kris says
Re: Clearance around dining table – you’ll need a bare minimum of four feet from the table edge to the wall. This allows for about 2 feet for the chair parked at the table, with about 2 feet for other people to sqeeze by. So the smaller the room, the smaller your table should be.
Karen says
Hi Kris,
THANK YOU! This helps a ton. 🙂
Ruchita says
1. Mood:
Sad. We are trying to find a home for Oscar the kitten, but it’s been hard. We get some leads, but then the people come back and say they can’t take him.
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ’em from head to toe?
Not sure I would wear them head to toe. For daily wear, I prefer one item of clothing with sequins.
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians?
my parents had an arranged marriage, so I’m curious about what that was like.
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone?
I was on a conference call for work.
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets?
my most favorite sweets are mini kit kats. My least fave is anything with peanuts. Not a fan of peanutty flavors.
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be?
maybe entertainment weekly. They have some fun covers.
7. Unicorn or pegasus?
pegasus. It would be cool to fly through the air.
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair.
back in college, I had a short pixie cut. The longest I’ve had it was several years ago when it was well past my shoulders.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day?
come home, change into comfy clothes and on the couch with a book or TV.
10. Weekly goals:
keep pounding the pavement to find a home for Oscar. Next up is to make fliers and post on Craigslist.
Have a great Monday!
P.S. I live in Ohio and if any cat ladies are interested in a sweet kitty, let me know!
Karen says
Hi Ruchita,
Keeping my fingers crossed for Oscar. Is having him stay with your fam an option at all?
Ruchita says
Thanks Karen! My sister-in-law was going to take him, but their resident dog is not happy. Unfortunately it’s not safe for Oscar to stay there long term. I would love to keep him, but Mingus and Ella get stressed easily by change. Hopefully at some point I will have some good news to report!
Karen says
Poor little thing. I have to say, you’re so kind to have fostered him. I bet it’s only a matter of time before he finds his forever home. 🙂
Rita says
1. Mood: A bit tired…
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe? No, not from head to toe, but perhaps some on shoes or a shirt. I do wear a lot of Swarovski though (my watch, most of my earrings, rings, necklaces).
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians? I have to find out if my father’s parents grew up in a farm or not!
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone? It was someone at work, but can’t remember who because there were several calls today.
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets? I don’t even know what they are!
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be? Fortune!
7. Unicorn or pegasus? Unicorn is more familiar to me.
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair? Up to hips when I was young (under 20), and a ‘man cut’ in my 30’s : (
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day? Gym might help, and then just some relaxing at home.
10. Weekly goals: The usual, I’m afraid.
Karen says
Hi Rita,
Fortune wouldn’t be a bad magazine to be on! Have a great week. 🙂
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
1. Mood: Feeling good!
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe?
No such thing as too many if they’re well done and yes, yes I would.
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians?
Maybe what they wore to their Proms. I don’t think I’ve ever seen photos but I bet they were some crazy 70s outfits.
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone?
A jeweler! We just had our 5 year anniversary and I get to add a new band to my ring set. It was supposed to be ready today but now I’m picking them up tomorrow. I’m also getting an old birthstone necklace reset as a cocktail ring. I’m just not into necklaces as much as rings and earrings.
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets?
I love Pay Days and 100 Grands and hate Good ‘n Plentys. Bleh.
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be?
Elle because I’d actually get two different cover shots since the subscriber cover is different than the newsstand cover.
7. Unicorn or pegasus?
Can it be a winged unicorn? If not than Pegasus.
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair?
I decided to get a terrible just-above-the-shoulders cut in 8th grade. I think it was supposed to be a bob but looked more like a bowl cut. Whoops. I’ve had it down to the middle of my back before when I was younger. It’s actually almost that long now and I’m loving it.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day?
I get a glass of wine, my Kindle and sit on the front patio with my pups. If the weather’s nice we may go on a walk first.
10. Weekly goals:
Get my emissions checked on the Jeep so I can renew my license plate, clean out my closet to make room for winter clothes (I just realized how many shirts I have from 5+ years ago that I’m never going to wear) and make a big pot of soup to have for lunches.
Karen says
Hi Leah,
I just had soup for lunch. What type are you going to make?
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
I’m thinking beef vegetable. Easy and tasty!
Karen says
Yum. I love me a good stew! I’m thinking of making something in my crock pot. I need to bust that thing out and give it some love.
Katherine G says
1. Mood:
~Tired. It is rainy and chilly here in Frederick today. A little sad that my wonderful cruise is over, but happy to be home, too. Go on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas if you ever get to cruise – it is an awesome ship and the biggest one out there!
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe?
~I think it’s good to do sequins for one item of clothing at a time. I probably wouldn’t wear it head to toe unless it was a cute dress.
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians?
~Hmmmm…maybe what some of their dates were like. I can’t wait for them to retire so that they can do the traveling that they want to do!
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone?
~Probably my mom :).
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets?
~I don’t eat candy much at all anymore, but I loved Kit Kat bars, Snickers bars, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and Three Musketeers bars. Least favorite candies were the licorice Good N’ Plenties, and anything really hard or chewy.
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be?
~I don’t find myself photogenic at all (others do, but I run from the camera), but if I had that kind of confidence in photos of myself I’d probably want to do the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition purely for the body paint and the locations they visit.
7. Unicorn or pegasus?
~Both!
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair?
~The shortest I had my hair was around chin length/collar bone length when I donated a foot and a half of hair to Locks of Love. The longest I had my hair was to my butt and I grew it out for Locks of Love. I would do short hair if I had to, but it’s not something I would be entirely happy with because I have very thick hair with a tendency to wave and frizz. Short hair has always been a lot more work – long hair tends to weigh itself down a bit and grow out more nicely, so for me it’s a lot less maintenance and very wash n’ go.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day?
~I also love a long hot shower or warm bath, a mani/pedi if needed, and comfort food. I love changing into sweats and a t-shirt, and reading a magazine or good book. I will also usually watch reality tv of some sort, whether it’s Jersey Shore or Alaska State Troopers.
10. Weekly goals:
~Get back into exercising after 2 days off – we actually worked out and lifted weights every morning on the cruise! The jogging track was really nice on this particular ship (of course I’m biased because I got the biggest and best ship for my first cruise, but I loved every second of being on it!).
~Start setting goals for my next career and looking at continuing education.
~Ride the vacation high and stay happy and positive!
Karen says
Hi Katherine,
So glad to have you back! What was the most exciting part of your trip?
Katherine G says
There were so many amazing things about the trip! The Oasis of the Seas is such a huge ship that you need several cruises just experience everything on it. This ship has a zip line (it’s a short one, goes above the ship’s Central Park), two 40 foot rock climbing walls, an aquatheater (where they do diving/acrobatic shows), and Flow Riders (you can learn to surf and boogie board, its an inflatable – of sorts – wave machine with a continuous pressurized wave). There are so many shows and activities it’s not even funny. I really liked going to St. Thomas (we stopped at Nassau, St. Thomas and St. Maarten). At St. Thomas, we rode on a pirate ship and went snorkeling. It was a blast! If you ever want any details if you happen to plan a cruise let me know. This ship was a blast! How was your weekend?
Karen says
Sounds like you had a TON of fun. I could probably spend all day (ALL DAY!) riding those Flow Riders; they sound like so much fun. Did you get seasick at all? That’s my one big fear about taking a cruise. Well, that and pirates! I have a pretty sensitive tummy and the only way I can handle boats is if I’m totally on meds. Otherwise, boats and I don’t mix.
And sure, I will definitely take you up on that offer if I ever do end up taking a cruise. 🙂
My weekend was really nice; thanks for asking. My in-laws visited us on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so we spent time hanging out with them. We went to a couple yummy dinners and did some window shopping for furniture. Slowly but surely I will get this condo furnished, dagnabbit! I also did a couple of really long runs, which always feels good. Oh, and I watched a movie on Netflix called Columbus Circle (a crime thriller), which I enjoyed too. All in all, a good time!
Katherine G says
It sounds like you had a great weekend! One reason I would suggest the ship that I went on is because it is the biggest one out there – hence not a ton of rocking. You notice it, but you would be much more likely to get sick on the pirate ship going snorkeling than you would on the cruise ship. I didn’t get seasick (I don’t really get motion sickness), I did feel a little sick on the pirate ship because it’s smaller and the Caribbean was a little on the rough side, but keeping an eye on the horizon and making it fun really helps. Once you think you will get seasick, you probably will…so the trick is to not think about it at all! I saw a lot of people with the prescription Dramamine patches, but on the Oasis you didn’t really need it. The Carnival cruise ship accidentally went through a tropical storm (we went around – they went from behind thinking the storm was moving faster than it was), so I bet the people on there were pretty sick!
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
Also, which model of table are you looking at? We got ours from Crate & Barrel and I love it. We have the Basque model in Honey. We started with 4 chairs and a bench but the bench ended up not working as well as we’d like so now we have 6 chairs. I like the simple, rustic look as well. It does get a bit scratched but that’s what place mats are for, right? If the table is simple you can always play around with different chair styles when you get tired of something!
Karen says
Hi Leah,
That’s the EXACT one I’m thinking about getting! I’m trying to choose between a smaller and slightly bigger table. They’ll both fit in the space, but I kind of like the idea of having a lot of room to spread my stuff around. I’m thinking about getting a bench; what did you not like about it?
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
You have good taste! Haha. The bench was a little bulky and difficult to slide in and out on a rug. If multiple people were sitting on it they just have to hop over it which is difficult for parents/grand parents. We still have the bench and every now and then we bring it out because it’s a nice way to fit a few more people around the table. The one we have can fit 3 on it instead of 2 chairs.
It’s a beautiful table! Just so you know, if you get the Basque chairs the wood on the chairs is slightly different than the table. They’re a little less rustic and a little more red. It doesn’t bother me but if you like furniture to be really matchy matchy it’s something to think about. Happy shopping!
Karen says
Thanks for letting me know. Funny, El Hub and I were looking at the table and chairs in the store the other day, and I said something similar about the bench (“You know when we have our parents over we’re gonna be stuck sitting on the bench, right?”). Do you have the 65 or the 82 inch table?
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
We have the 65 and it’s really pretty big once you get it into the room.
Karen says
Yeah, I think we may ultimately go with that one. It’s a little more affordable and I like the idea of having room to move around the table, you know? Plus we have a little bit of counter space nearby, so there’s that option too. How long have you had yours?
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
I think we’ve had it for about a year and a half now. The 82 was just a little too long. I was also concerned that if we moved somewhere in the future with a smaller room or less access it would be difficult to fit it in there. Good luck with the shopping! You know you’ll have to post pictures, right?

I’d like to hear some stories from my grandma, who was a very brave woman, because she raised my mom alone after my grandpa died in world war II. She died 12 years ago so it’s too late.
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone? A colleague this afternoon, we discussed an event for the company.
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets? We don’t do Halloween here in Germany, but Snickers are great.
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be?
Maybe Yoga Journal or Vogue of course.
7. Unicorn or pegasus? Both!
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair? Nearly one inch, about 2 years ago, and shoulder lenght during my early twenties. And it is growing now, with great undercut, that you don’t see.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day?
It depends on where I am. Turn on the TV, phone a friend,
10. Weekly goals:
Work, work, work, start meditating again and finlly get a pedicure with the new Chanel colour “Suspicious”
Home interior advice: You must imagine everyone sitting around the table and than you must be able to move around everyone.
And maybe you want to put a shlf in there as well.
Have a great week everyone.

Thanks for the decorating advice, Yogirl. That’s very helpful!
Stef Smith says
1. Mood: Full! Went on a two mile walk and then came home to eat a big bowl of lentil soup! Yum!
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe? I great up with a bellydancing Mother who told me, “You can never have too many sequins.” I still believe that. I’ve worn them head to toe, it’s a good look. Both my daughters wore sequins for their school pictures this year, love it!
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians? Ha! I ask more questions than anyone in the world, so everything I ever wanted to know about my parents, I’ve asked. I ask a lot of questions, it’s the only way you get any answers!
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone? The Husband just called five minutes ago to say he was working an hour of overtime today.
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets? Alas, I can not eat Halloween candy, :(, it gives me the worst canker sores. But if I could, I’d go for Skittles, Hershey’s bars, red Tootsie Pops (only red please!), and a few Butterfingers and Candy Corn. But I’d give away Twizzlers, anything gummi, Dum-Dums, and raisins! LOL!
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be? Shape! Or Women’s Fitness! Or Self! I’m trying to get in shape, can you tell?
7. Unicorn or pegasus? Duh, Unicorn! As every other girl in the mid-80’s did, I was a unicorn collector. Oh I had so many! I still sleep with a giant stuffed unicorn I got for Christmas when I was 8. She’s 29 years young!
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair? I’ve had a pixie cut a few times, it’s a good look on me, but a lot of upkeep because I have curly hair and it needs to be straightened. The longest I’ve let it get is mid-back, again, curly hair. It tangles badly when it’s long, drives me nuts!
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day? Manicure, or long hot bath, and go to bed early.
10. Weekly goals: Hit the gym four times at least, collect money for my 1st graders jog-a-thon, organize the dressers in the house, figure out if I want to cut thicker bangs.
Karen says
Great job on your walk, Stef!

1. Mood:

2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe?
Nope, I like sequins, but in moderation!
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians?
I’d love to know how my parents met too.
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone?
My boyfriend.
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets?
We don’t celebrate Halloween here.
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be?
Vanity Fair.
7. Unicorn or pegasus?
unicorn
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair?
Shortest was a short bob, and at its longest, my hair reached my bum.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day?
have a nice bath or read a good book.
10. Weekly goals:
write more.
Karen says
Have a great week, Gio!
Natasha says
1. Mood:
Upbeat. Decided to streamline this week’s schedule and I feel so much better already!
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe?
Depends on the situation. When I was bellydancing, I loved the contrast of sequined tight pieces (bra, belt) and flowy chiffon skirts and veils. Now that I’m no longer dancing and my figure is a bit more rubensesque, I don’t wear sequins. There’s never enough glitter, but apparently, I’ve had my fill of sequins…
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians?
There are so many! My Dad is out of the picture and Mom doesn’t like to talk about things, so I have so few family stories…
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone?
Mom, to get the details for her Thanksgiving visit.
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets?
Love the candy bars, candy corn, jelly bellies… hate wax vampire teeth. We stopped giving out candy and now just hand out glow-sticks; the kids really loved them last year (and we had more than 200 trick-or-treaters! I swear, they must bus them in or something!)
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be?
Vogue! Featuring my sparkle mehndi as jewelry for skinny, haut couture models!
7. Unicorn or pegasus?
My husband’s first car was named Pegasus. I think it would be OK to fly in the city b/c we wouldn’t go as high as airplanes, thus avoiding airspace conflicts. It would be awesome to be able to visit family on opposite ends of the country without having to fork over a second mortgage on airfare…
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair?
Pixie cut as a kid. Then I grew it out long, only to cut it off when DOrothy Hamil won the Olympics and I HAD to have a cut like hers… unfortunately, my hair texture is NOT like hers and nothing would beat the curls out of my hair…I just looked like a dork… My hair is shoulder-length right now and with good moisturizing, my curls look great!
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day?
Eat a coconut ice floe, sit on the couch in a puddie pile and check my email…
10. Weekly goals: get my new blog into a happy shape, clean the carpet, walk 2 miles every morning (for my personal sanity!)
Dining room tables. We got a big one. Hubby liked the big one — and had dreams of his whole family coming out from NYC and sitting at our table…but really, we only need 4 places at most, and I wish our table were smaller so I could have cabinets for stuff in the dining room. Also, the bigger the dining room table, the more junk accumulates on it…
Karen says
Hi Natasha,
Thank you for your input on the dining room table! You’ve given me a lot to think about. I do want to put cabinets and other stuff in the room, and right now it’s just me and El Hub, so smaller may be the way to go.

Barbara Vezos says
1. Mood
A little cranky – it’s a rainy Monday and I am not too happy with my job lately. Would rather stay under the covers with my cat Selene today.
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe? I’m a little too old for sequins (52) but maybe a few here and there on accessories.
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians? I wish I had listened more to my Dad about his business experience. He was a fantastic business man and boss (his employees loved him!) but I was young when he passed away so we really didn’t get to talk much about his work style or philosophy.
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone?
My sister – making arrangements on where to meet for the Breast Cancer walk yesterday in Boston (it was a great event – soggy but inspiring!).
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets?
Best- Twizzlers, Twix, Kit Kat, M&Ms. Worst – um…cant think of any 🙂
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be?
Allure! Best magazine ever!!
7. Unicorn or pegasus?
Unicorn. My company is moving to a new Cloud strategy and I keep thinking how much more fun it would be if there were some unicorns involved, bouncing around the clouds.
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair?
Shortest – Dorothy Hammill cut in senior year of high school. Sad but true. Longest – halfway down my back.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day? Reality TV, wine, clean my makeup brushes, boyfriend and cat cuddling.
10. Weekly goals:
Apply for at least two jobs, check out Nars Andy Warhol collection in person, help President Obama win the debate with my good vibes.
Karen says
Hi Barbara,
Sorry to hear about your job woes, and I hope things get better soon.
Does Selene sleep with you under the covers? That’s SO CUTE! Tabs absolutely hates blankets. I wish he would snuggle with me underneath mine but he refuses.
Christine says
I need to kill some time, so here goes!
1. Mood: Bored-ish, with a dash of cabin fever. I see sun and blue sky outside and I want to be there!
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe? Anything more than a sequined top or handbag is a bit too much for me. I’m a sparkly party pooper, I feel.
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians? Nooooo. I finally found out the one detail I’d be curious about (without even asking!) and I’m done with the wondering.
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone? My mom — somehow she went from talking about a headcold to buying an orchid at Aldi. This was on the second attempt at “talk to you later, I’ve gotta run!”
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets? I LOVE jujyfruits. And Swedish fish. I’m probably actually a 70-year-old man.
And I hate popcorn balls. SERIOUSLY, who thinks kids actually want those when they’re trick-or-treating!
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be? Oh, hmmm. Maybe RadioInk, because I’m a nerd like that. If not, I’m with you on Cat Fancy.
7. Unicorn or pegasus? Unicorn. It’s closer to a narwhal than a pegasus…and a narwhal is really a unicorn of the sea.
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair? Shortest was at my chin after the dreaded accidental mullet two days before I moved to college (the only way to fix a mullet is to chop it, ugh). Longest was when I stopped cutting my hair for four and a half years after the mullet incident. It was a couple inches above my butt.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day? I knit or play Mario Kart on Wii. Of course, that’s between snuggles with the cat.
10. Weekly goals: Finally finish my website (ugh), send out a few more resumes, stay on top of my freelance work. Oh, and no more spilling my lunch all over the break room floor.
Karen says
Hi Christine,
Thanks for filling out the poll, and I’m glad to know that I’m not the only person who thinks that being on the cover of Cat Fancy would be awesome, LOL!
What kind of freelance work do you do, btw?
Christine says
I do audio editing and social media (currently in the form of pinterest!). It’s a nice bit of “lunch money” to spend on something other than bills. 🙂
Karen says
Oh, cool. I have friends who do social media for brands…seems like an interesting job to have! I love Pinterest, btw. I could spend all day on there, seriously!
Christine says
I loooove Pinterest. I’ve accidentally lost so many hours by clicking on one pin…then another, then going to a blog, then pinning something else… it’s like internet crack!
Doing it for a company is an interesting journey with tons of wrinkles to iron out, but I’m learning as I go.
Chelsea says
1. Mood: Frustrated! The stats program I’m working with is not cooperating!
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe? My prom dress was a mini-skirt halter with bronze spangles all over, and I still have it in my closet despite the fact that I will never fit into it again, LOL. Sequins are awesome.
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians? Not in particular!
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone? My mom 🙂
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets? I love most of them, but Mary Janes are disgusting. Candy corn/mellowcreme pumpkins are way too sweet! I actually just ate some smarties.
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be? There’s a magazine about rabbits, but I’ve never bought it because it’s expensive! But a rabbit rescue nearby is doing holiday photos with your pet rabbit in a few weeks, so you know we’re doing that!
7. Unicorn or pegasus? OOOH. Pegasus makes me think of Sailor Moon, and Unicorn makes me think of Harry Potter. I’m kind of afraid of heights, so probably a Unicorn, but a Pegasus would make my commute shorter!
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair? My hair hasn’t been above my shoulders since I was 12 (13 years ago!). The shortest in recent memory is collarbone length. The longest was waist length. I usually keep it around bra-strap length.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day? Take a bath and chill with my furbabies!
10. Weekly goals: Study for my management and database marketing exams, finish this paper on corporate social responsibility, and clean up; my corner of the living room that surrounds my desk (it is a MESS!)
Karen says
Wait, what are Mary Janes? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of those!

6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be?: Allure.
7. Unicorn or pegasus?: Unicorn. Preferably quadri-corn. (Sorry, I’m quoting a local commercial.)
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair?: A little bit past my shoulders, which was back in 4th grade. I’ve had it jaw-length ever since.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day?: Read, listen to music, take a bath, and watch old movies and TV shows.
10. Weekly goals: Finish all of my homework early, since there’s A LOT of it.

Karen says
Hi Varsha,
No, not yet. I know which one I want, but I can’t decide on the size. Here it is: the Basque Honey Table from Crate and Barrel.
How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun?
varsha says
Thats a neat one..! It rained here in seattle after almost 3 months,so we kinda cozened up with some warm and spicy food ,it was good 🙂 I did take a quick peek in sephora and almost bought Loccitane milk something lotion..well,almostt 😀 what did you do?
Karen says
Yeah, I like it a lot. I figure if I get tired of the style, it’s simple enough so that I can dress it up with different chairs and whatnot.
L’Occitane makes some good lotions! I love their hand cream, especially.
This weekend my in-laws visited us, so we hung out with them. Other than that, a whole lot of nothing, which was WONDERFUL!
Kate & Zena says
I is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!
1. Mood:
A bit cranky. I had a super bad reaction to generic Singulair, and my body is still recovering from it! My right hand also still has tingly sensations and so, off to the specialist I go. Yippee. Yikes.
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe?
More than an accessory or detail on a shirt. I’m not a sequin girl.
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians?
Uh, not really. My parents tell me stories all the time about them.
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone?
Mom.
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets?
Favorite: Candy corn. Least favorite: Hm, do I have a least favorite? Popcorn balls, probably, but I didn’t get those as a kid really. XD
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be?
I wouldn’t want to be on the cover of any magazine, as it would mean I would be Photoshopped to death. I don’t like Photoshop for that reason, and I would rather be off a magazine cover and not in a magazine than in a magazine and be completely unrecognizable to me! I’m cranky about that sort of thing.
7. Unicorn or pegasus? Hm, can I have a fusion of both? A unicorned Pegasus? That would be neat!
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair? The shortest I had my hair was a bowl cut when I was really little. It was super, super razored short in the back with an electronic razor and cut above my ears in the front. The longest is how I have it now. It’s a layered cut; it’s touching midlength in the back and my shortest length is about shoulder length.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day?
READ!
10. Weekly goals:
-Make appointment for wrist specialist (sigh)
-Make my uber special pin out of Sculpey for Halloween!
-Make adjustments to Zena’s costume.
Karen says
Hi Kate,
What’s Zena’s costume for this year?
Kate & Zena says
She’s going as a skunk, as per usual. She may go as Superdog next year (we have no money for a new costume, but I did show my dad Superman and he liked that one, so we may get it on clearance after the holiday for next year!)
Here’s a little photo for you (I did a photoshoot this year):

SUPER CUTE. Are those little white hairs around Z.’s eyes? I can’t handle it!!!
Kate & Zena says
No, those are tan hairs. However, if you look around her nose, you will see the beginning of grey hairs. MY BABY IS GOIN’ GREY!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! *sobs* It can’t be happening! My baby can’t be going grey. *sniff*
She’s too young, Karen. Give those greys to some other puppy, but not mine! Grey fairy, begone!
Ana says
I know how terrible it is to have a short haircut as a child. I hated it so much… I never understood why my parents decided to give me haircut that made me look like a boy. And don’t get me started on the mullet trend – the single most horrible style of the 80s/90s!!
Kate & Zena says
I can thankfully say I never had a mullet, just the bowl cut. I got it because I was horrible with a brush. I have Autism and when I was little I couldn’t handle the texture of it, so my mom wanted a cut that would be a blow and go sort of thing…the bowl fit the bill. It happened to be rather cute when I was four, not so much at eight and permed. Yikes.
Karen says
It was so traumatic! Right after I got my hair cut I walked into a store and this lady thought I was a boy. Yeah… talk about tears!
Hanna says
I love these Monday posts!

Thanks, Hanna! Have a great week. 🙂

1. Mood: Not good. Bad mood. Aggravated because doctor was running an hour+ late and I had something to talk to him about and he was also going to do some cranial-sacrial help. So I’m frustrated and just in a no-good-very-bad mood
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe? I think wearing a panel of them in front of a sweater might be too much for me. Just as details, I suppose.
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians? No. I think I know far too much. We’re very close.
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone? This nurse at the doctor’s office, Julie.
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets? I don’t love any black licorice. I also hate when they put the tiny razor blades into the homemade candy (Just kidding). I love Twix bars – all the mini candy bars.
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be? Vogue. The ultimate!
7. Unicorn or pegasus? Pegasus because they can fly.
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair? I’ve had it as pixie and almost down to my waist was the longest.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day? I haven’t exactly found the perfect remedy for when it’s been a truly stressful day. It takes a lot to calm me down.
10. Weekly goals: Try to feel more at ease at an opportunity I just got and try to somehow just experience it, not to interpret or judge it. Basically to just let things be (Which is hard for me). I think that’s all I need now.

This is such a great idea, Karen! I just started my own blog and I am going to answer your questions on it every week! Thank you for the direction and inspiration.

1. Mood: Tired/ill, but pretty upbeat.
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ‘em from head to toe? On me, I’d say nothing more than a few clean lines of sequins. I think some women can rock more, though!
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians? Not really. Grandparents, maybe, and great-grandparents, but if there was any particular story I wanted to know about Mum I think I’d ask her. And I think she’d answer.
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone? I honestly don’t remember! I rarely talk on the phone.
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets? We don’t really have Halloween here, so I’m going to take that as sweets in general. I like chocolates, and biscuits. I actually don’t really like most candy!
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be? OMG, Time! Can you IMAGINE? The acknowledgment of your work! *swoon*
7. Unicorn or pegasus? I’d say Pegasus. Flying anything is wonderful.
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair? The longest I’ve ever had my hair was quite recent, actually. I had it about down to my waist. I recently cut it to a more manageable length – the upkeep was a nightmare! The shortest I’ve been was in my teens, where I had short, layered hair: sort of a long, trendy Asian boy ‘do.
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day? I like to make a cup of Sleepytime tea or some nice tisanes, read, snack and daydream. Curling up with my dog is great. She’s always good for a cuddle.
10. Weekly goals: None, at the moment! Read your blog every single day.
