You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
I’m like Tony the Tiger today. I feel grrreatt! This is the first week in months that I haven’t had some little side project or house thingy to do, so I feel pretty good about that.Oh, and I actually went to bed at a decent hour for a change! — yup, because I finished watching the last episode of Friday Night Lights. In total, I watched all 73 or 74 episodes of that show in three weeks!
Wow, that’s a lot of TV… But it was great TV. I’m serious, what a wonderful show. Highly recommended, even if you only have a tiny bit of interest in football.
Yes, ma’am, today feels like it’s going to be a great day. 🙂
- Are there any bedtime rituals or things you do to help yourself fall asleep?
I do. Most importantly, I need at least a couple hours away from the computer, which is actually easier said than done. And not just my main computer, but every little Internet-connected device. Smartphones and tablets (we have a first-gen Kindle Fire) make it so easy to surf the Web from the couch.Every night, after I put away the gizmos, I make myself a big cup of Sleepytime Tea, which I sip while I watch something brainless on TV. That’s been my main bedtime ritual for years.
I think it also helps, for various reasons, when I get in a workout earlier in the day. Running relieves my lower back pain and makes me feel a little better about myself (like I’ve actually done something productive that day).
- What was the last makeup counter you remember visiting?
I think it was the Chanel and Laura Mercier counters at Nordie’s a couple weeks ago. So much fun! There are some really passionate makeup artists at both counters (at the Village in Corte Madera), and the passion they have for their lines always gets me fired up. - Do you ever take pictures with your phone? If you do, what do you like to snap?
Do I ever take pictures with my phone? Um, survey says, YES! I feel naked without some kind of camera with me at all times, and that little camera on the iPhone is surprisingly good (if you hold it very steady). Most of the pics in my camera roll are of food, felines and other random things that make me laugh (like the pic at the top of this post).
- What’s one of the most helpful books you’ve ever read?
Anne Lamott’s Bird By Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life. Great, great book. No kidding, but I’ve re-read it at least 20 times! Anne’s so funny and inspiring that I always feel better about myself when I read it. Whenever I start doubting myself or freaking out about something related to writing, that book almost always helps. It’s like medicine for self-sabotaging inner artists. In it Anne talks a lot about fiction writing, but I recommend it for anyone who writes anything for work, school or even blogging.
Oh, and once, get this: I bumped into Anne Lamott in a movie theater restroom here in Marin County, which is where she’s from, but I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to bother her, so I just gave her a smile. Someone else walked up to her assertively a moment earlier and said that Bird by Bird had changed their life, and Anne looked kind of taken aback/annoyed! I guess she really wanted to get back to her movie.
- What’s the secret in your secret sauce?
Two handfuls of tabby cat hair and a dozen cheesy jokes, LOL!Nah, not really. I guess if there is a secret to…anything, it’s to try to maintain a positive attitude, no matter what.
- What are three things you miss about your younger days, and three things you don’t?
I miss sleeping soundly all night, every night. I miss not having to think about grownup things all the time. I miss seeing my family every day.I don’t miss having to spend 10-20 minutes looking for a place to park my car when I lived in San Francisco. I don’t miss living with strangers who always ate my food in the fridge (food that was clearly marked with my name on it!). And I don’t miss spending all day working in a cubicle and feeling absolutely miserable about myself.
- Are you currently enjoying any beauty products on which you recently splurged?
Chanel’s Poudre Universelle Libre Natural Finish Loose Powder in Translucent 3. It was a splurge a couple weeks ago, and I’m really loving it so far. The powder is super fine, and I know it’ll last a while because I find myself having to hardly use any to get a nice, completely matte finish. - What’s your favorite teen movie?
OOH! Tough question. I like so many of them, but the first one that came to mind is Clueless. You know, I just read in Entertainment Weekly that that movie just turned 17 years old… 17 years old! I still remember seeing it in the theater when I went to school in Davis.
Wow, was it really that long ago? YIKES!
- Weekly goals:
Don’t give in to the fear! Don’t do it!

Marina says
1. Mood: happy! 🙂
2. Are there any bedtime rituals or things you do to help yourself fall asleep? I have tones of relaxing products, Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax bath oil is, hands down, the best! I also drink mint tea every night before bed.
3. What was the last makeup counter you remember visiting? Givenchy.
4. Do you ever take pictures with your phone? yes, as I don’t want to take my camera with me all the time.
5. What’s one of the most helpful books you’ve ever read? Books about fear, I’d say.
6. What’s the secret in your secret sauce? I wish a had a secret sauce…
7. What are three things you miss about your younger days, and three things you don’t? Believe it or not but today I was thinking that I really miss my late teens. Can’t think of anything negative. Maybe I was not very experienced in life.
8. Are you currently enjoying any beauty products on which you recently splurged? yes, definitely. I’d rather buy one high quality products.
9. What’s your favorite teen movie? Hmm. I can’t think of any. Maybe Home Alone?
10. Weekly goals: go to a hair salon! Well, besides everything else 🙂
Karen says
OOh, what are you going to get done at the hair salon?
Marina says
Just trim the ends, I am afraid. Since it took me over two years to get back my ‘virgin’ hair colour, I am not sure I want to colour it again.
Karen says
That is dedication! I can’t remember the last time my hair was its own color, LOL! Have fun at the salon…even if it’s a trim, it’s still a treat, right?
Chris25 says
1. Mood: Not bad. My MRI came back unremarkable. My doctor thinks the dizziness is stress related.
2. Are there any bedtime rituals or things you do to help yourself fall asleep?: A cup of hot tea and a good song. Right now I am digging “Like the Way I Do” by Melissa Etheridge.
3. What was the last makeup counter you remember visiting?: I haven’t been to one in years, because I get treated so badly at counters. I think the last one was MAC at Macys.
4. Do you ever take pictures with your phone?: Yes, but my camera phone sucks, so I refrain from doing it.
5. What’s one of the most helpful books you’ve ever read?: Honestly, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, because I really identify with Huck. He didn’t fit into his society, so he left it. He lived on the periphery of society. I wouldn’t exactly leave society the way he did, but I sometimes feel like I am not really a part of any group, so I move through society, staying on the fringe.
6. What’s the secret in your secret sauce?: Not telling! LOL. It’s my stubborness. I am quiet and reserved, but my stubborness keeps me from giving up on myself.
7. What are three things you miss about your younger days, and three things you don’t?: I miss my ability to imagine wild things (still there, but not as intense), my love for rock musician stories, and my ability to eat junk for days without getting sick. I don’t miss my lack of nerve/guts, my willingness to accept things as they were (I was too shy to challenge anything) and my lack of faith in myself.
8. Are you currently enjoying any beauty products on which you recently splurged?: Yes, I love the 4 Wet n Wild Fergie polishes I got recently, and MAC Light Year MSF was worth the snotty attitude from the MAC SA asshole I had to endure.
9. What’s your favorite teen movie?: I love 80s teen films with Molly Ringwald, and my fave 90s teen movie is “The Craft” (eve though it’s not great).
10. Weekly goals: Homework, homework, homework and photo shoot on Saturday.
Karen says
Hi Chris,
Bummer that you haven’t had the best customer service at the counters. 🙁 Do you ever shop at Nordstrom? I usually get great service there.
Chris25 says
I meant to check out Nordstrom, but I never get a chance to walk in. There’s one in Union Square in Manhattan.
Karen says
I’ve never visited that one, but the one by my house and the SF Nordie’s are both pretty great. Bloomingdales has nice MUA artists, too. 🙂
Dominique says

Hi Dominique,
Good to see you here again. How cool that you guys have Chanel at Sephora! I remember seeing it at a few stores a long time ago, but now not so much. When does the holiday collection arrive in your neck of the woods?
Nina says
1. Mood: Quite happy. The Hubs and I were both not feeling well y’day but we seem to have recovered.
2. Are there any bedtime rituals or things you do to help yourself fall asleep? I have to go to bed 15 minutes before bed time so I can slather (and I mean slather) on lip balm and read a chapter or two. I also sleep really early, and sleep very hard and if I dont, im out of sorts the next day.

8. Are you currently enjoying any beauty products on which you recently splurged? All the Marilyn lipsticks. Yes please.
9. What’s your favorite teen movie? Ohhh its gotta be Sixteen Candles. It gave me hope during my awkward teen years. And Michael Schoeffling (aka Jake Ryan) is the stuff adolescent dreams are made of.
10. Weekly goals: To just chill. I need to be less obsessed about deadlines.
Karen says
Hi Nina,
You’ve gotta read this if you love Sixteen Candles:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/06/AR2009080603039.html
It’s about Jake Ryan!
Nina says
Reading now, thank you!
Y’know, now that ive thought about it, I also had a crush on Andrew McCarthy during his Pretty in Pink days! 🙂
Karen says
Pretty in Pink! That’s another good one. (Remember the scene where Duckie lip synchs Try a Little Tenderness? Love that!). I need to rent that one sometime soon.
Anyway, hi to the kitties…hope you’re having a great night!
Nina says
Hope yours was great too! The kitties, both indoor and outdoor, send purrs. And the puppy says yipyap! 🙂
The article was really good. And really true. 🙂
Karen says
I’m kind of obsessed with the idea of Little Bean joining the fur fam. You know I like to vicariously live my cat lady dreams through you since Tabs refuses to share his humans with other felines.
Nina says
I am too, but im not sure if my <3 can handle it just yet.
Tracy@Beauty Reflections says
1. Mood: A little tired! I’ve been staying up late rewatching Lost on Netflix. Just as addicting the first time around! But I keep wanting to eat peanut butter out of the jar now. 🙂

3. What was the last makeup counter you remember visiting? It’s been awhile actually, but probably the Armani counter.
4. Do you ever take pictures with your phone? Yes! My phone is filled with Disneyland pictures haha!
5. What’s one of the most helpful books you’ve ever read? I can’t remember the name of it, but it was a book explaining Multiple Sclerosis that my neurologist recommended I read after diagnosis. I needed to know everything I could as soon as possible so I wouldn’t be too surprised when stuff happened. I hate surprises. 🙂
6. What’s the secret in your secret sauce? Just keep swimming, just keep swimming…
7. What are three things you miss about your younger days, and three things you don’t? I miss being able to stay up late and get up no problem the next day, I miss my metabolism, I miss my clear skin. 8. Are you currently enjoying any beauty products on which you recently splurged? I haven’t really bought anything all that splurge-worthy lately! I’ve been waiting to spend on the new Armani foundation.
9. What’s your favorite teen movie? The Breakfast Club! Saw it in the theatre too. I wish I had a par of Claire’s Ralph Lauren boots.
10. Weekly goals: Run, watch more Lost, clean!
Karen says
Hi Tracy,
I saw Lost the other day on Netflix and thought about watching it. I missed it the first time around. Did I ever tell you that it was filmed on Oahu? Whenever I used to go and visit my in-laws I’d always be lookin’ for a film crew. LOL!
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
Lost was my OBSESSION for years. I still haven’t found anything to replace it.
Karen says
I know a lot of people who LOVE the show. I tried to watch it once or twice when it was on and was just really, really confused.
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
It was definitely confusing but there’s never been another show I was more excited to watch each week. Have you watched Revenge or Vampire Diaries yet? They’re my other can’t miss shows.
Karen says
No, but I’ve heard good things about Revenge. Not that I need to get addicted to another TV show, but I kinda want to watch Nashville, the new one with Connie Britton where she plays a country singer. Have you heard of it?
Tracy@Beauty Reflections says
Lean, Once Upon A Time has a really Lost feel about it! It’s kind of filling the void Lost left. Very character driven, with flashbacks to see why they’ve become the person they are. You should try it!
Tracy@Beauty Reflections says
Sorry Leah! Typed your name wrong! 🙂
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
Hey Tracy! I’ve been watching Once Upon a Time (I think I watch too much TV) and also Revolution. I wasn’t into Revolution the first couple of episodes but it’s getting better and is from the Lost guys as well.
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
1. Mood:
Feeling much better this week. I’m not sure why but I think the cooler weather helps. I love when the seasons change and I’m already getting excited for the holidays. I even made a roast turkey last night with all the fixins!
2. Are there any bedtime rituals or things you do to help yourself fall asleep?
I’m a bad sleeper in general but a hot bath and a little reading always helps. Puppy snuggles are also a must. They sleep in a crate but we have to get about 20 minutes of snuggles in before we can all go to sleep.
3. What was the last makeup counter you remember visiting?
I went to Chanel a week ago to looks at the Fall collection. The sales gal was very in my face though so I had to run away.
4. Do you ever take pictures with your phone?
All the time! I use it for my blog even though it’s not the best. We bought a real camera earlier this year but managed to drop it on vacation in Hawaii and I haven’t been able to let myself spend the money on a new one yet. I have hundreds of photos of my puppies on there too. I am the crazy Poodle Lady.
5. What’s one of the most helpful books you’ve ever read?
I tend to read mostly fiction so this is a tough one to answer. I liked “The Millionaire Next Door” for some great personal finance tips.
6. What’s the secret in your secret sauce?
My secret sauce is a fantastic Bolognese Sauce and the secret is the bacon and mirepoix that simmers in some olive oil before the rest of the ingredients go in. Mmmm.
7. What are three things you miss about your younger days, and three things you don’t?
I Miss: Movie Dates, Summer Vacations to my grandparents’ beach house in Maryland, and High School basketball games.
I Don’t Miss: Staying up late to finish a research paper, not being able to have a glass of wine, not being sure of my own opinions
8. Are you currently enjoying any beauty products on which you recently splurged?
Yes! I’m obsessed with the beauty products from Naked Princess including their Naked Lip Shines and Vanilla Blanc scented Body Souffle and Body and Boudoir Spray. It’s my absolute favorite vanilla-based scent.
9. What’s your favorite teen movie?
I have to agree with Clueless. It was so iconic for my generation, which is a crazy thing to say. “My generation”. Wow I’m getting older.
10. Weekly goals: Finish the laundry, get to the gym 4 times this week and avoid all fried food and pasta. This cold weather makes me crave them like nothing else and it’s hard to resist when I live near the BEST Italian restaurant in Denver. They make Carry Out way too easy.
Karen says
Hi Leah,
Sorry I missed answering your comment earlier! I accidentally scrolled past it.
Anyway, now I’m dying to know — what’s the best Italian restaurant in Denver? I have to put it on my list just in case I ever travel to your city!
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
My two favorites are up the Highlands neighborhood (where I live) and one is called Trattoria Stella and the other is Parisi. Parisi has the best and easiest take out ever and a cute little Italian market with prepared foods, gelato, deserts and imported Italian ingredients to check out while you wait. Mmmmm, I’m making myself hungry just talking about it!
Trisha says
1. Mood: Pretty darn accomplished!
2. Are there any bedtime rituals or things you do to help yourself fall asleep? I make sure the doors are locked and shut tight and that the heat is turned down to 65 (totally can’t sleep when it’s hot.)
3. What was the last makeup counter you remember visiting? I almost never visit department store makeup counters, mostly because I don’t like being hassled by the sales staff.
4. Do you ever take pictures with your phone? Yep! I took a pretty interesting picture at a local apple (the fruit) festival this weekend. It was a satellite TV booth advertising free guns when you sign up. Yes, free guns. A very Montana thing to see.
5. What’s one of the most helpful books you’ve ever read? It was this book by Susan Powter, that formerly famous weight loss guru. I got it when I was a kid at a garage sale and it taught me about calories and stuff.
6. What’s the secret in your secret sauce? My ultra confidence.
7. What are three things you miss about your younger days, and three things you don’t? I miss having the summer off, walking around barefoot everywhere, and not having to work. I don’t miss not having my own money, having to do homework, and dealing with high school drama.
8. Are you currently enjoying any beauty products on which you recently splurged? I got a bunch of NYX stuff on a recent shopping trip out of state and love everything I got.
9. What’s your favorite teen movie? That’s tough!! Probably Clueless. That movie is STILL awesome. Also, She’s All That. Even though it’s ridiculous, it’s still great.
10. Weekly goals: Eat apple pie. Get ready, mentally, for an important business trip next week.
Leah @ Mile High Beauty Blog says
Congrats Trisha! Just read your post and I’m so impressed with your accomplishment!

Hi Varsha,
I didn’t know you were a mom. 🙂 How old is your little one?
varsha says
17 months..small,but big enough to drive me up and down the walls..:)
Karen says
Aww, they’re so cute at that age. 🙂 My BFF’s boy is a little over a year and he’s so fun. How many kids do you have? Or is the baby your only child?
varsha says
Yeah they sure are..staggering and running around and blabbering things..:)She is my first (and probably last :P) and only kid..Do you get to meet your bff and son quite often?
Karen says
She’s a makeup addict in the making! How fun will it be to take her to the counters? 🙂
Last time I saw my “nephew” was about a month ago for his birthday. We all try to see each other at least once every couple of months. They live in the South Bay, which is about two hours away from me. I wish they lived closer! Here’s pictures of him from last year. I was the designated photographer for his baptism.
https://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/product-reviews/youre-sheer-to-find-a-seasons-worth-of-pretty-in-cliniques-new-holiday-palette-for-eyes-lips-and-cheeks/
varsha says
Awww..Nicholas is soo very cute..Ameya (my baby)was bald like him too 🙂
Yea..she looks so very closely when I put on make up and plays with it when she gets a chance..I am looking forward to our trips to Sephora ‘cos am lacking a good company here..lol..:D
Karen says
He’s fun! He is a very happy boy and is always smiling.
That’s so cute that Ameya is already playing with makeup. 🙂 I see little girls in Sephora with their moms and it’s so touching. Sometimes they look bored out of their minds (LOL), and sometimes they seem to have a lot of fun helping their moms pick out colors. What’s her personality like? Is she shy or outgoing?
varsha says
She is a pretty social kid..still has a bit of stranger anxiety though, especially with guys..Last time I went to sephora, she didn’t want to go roam the mall with her dad as we usually do..So I was holding her and swatching’ stuff and then she wanted to swatch too lol..May it will be more sane (or insane, considering how abused my credit card will be lol) when she grows up a bit, because right now she gets so worked up seeing all the tubes and pans and wants all of them..so very curious, obviously 🙂
Sherice says
1. Mood:
Inspired! I have been thinking of making some big life changes, and while it is scary to think of stepping outside my confort zone it is exhilirating daydreaming about all that I’d like to accomplish (FYI Karen, your Too Faced article is giving me vision!)
2. Are there any bedtime rituals or things you do to help yourself fall asleep?
Since I was a little girl I rock myself to sleep…either shaking my leg or actually rocking back and forth…my fiance finds it intriguing lol. Also, lately I have been taking a vitamin supplement called l-theanine with chamonile tea for the nights I just can’t knock out…
3. What was the last makeup counter you remember visiting?
It was definitely the MAC counter. I’m a bit peeved with them right now because I totally missed out on the Marilyn collection…I woke up every hour on the hour for their online launch and fell asleep for real by 5 am, work up at 6:15 and missed the launch by 20 minutes. THEN I sent my fiance to the counter TWICE on the October 4th launch and it sold out in 5 minutes! Not happy MAC. Not happy at all.

8. Are you currently enjoying any beauty products on which you recently splurged?
In an attempt to rid myself of my missed Marilyn Mac woe… (say that 3 times fast!) I bought a ton of Wet n Wild lipsticks and spent all weekend creating Fall looks. We do what we can 🙂

No way I could pick just one. Top of the list are Teen Witch, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, For Keeps…I was a big Molly Ringwald fan

varsha says
Oh and thats too bad of that writer lady..attitude!
I want to start watching Friday night lights but am scared that will make my life more of a hot mess.Have you tried How I met your mother or Desperate housewives?I am so addicted to the latter,so very coool and the first one is a quick pick-me-up for me anytime I am down..:)
Karen says
Hi Varsha,
I think she was just eager to get back to her movie. And I can imagine it being a little weird getting recognized in a bathroom, of all places, LOL!
I haven’t watched either of those shows, but I’ve heard they’re both good. You have to watch the first season of Friday Night Lights at the very least. It is perfection. 🙂
varsha says
I saw this only now..:p..but be warned,if I see YOU in a bathroom or for that matter anywhere else I will come and talk for sure 😉
MM Curator says

2. Are there any bedtime rituals or things you do to help yourself fall asleep? I read, either blogs on my phone or books/magazines.
3. What was the last makeup counter you remember visiting? I went to the MAC counter at Nordstrom this past Saturday hoping to find anything left from the Marilyn collection, but they were sold out of everything. 🙁

Things I don’t miss: 1. Being incredibly worried about what other people think. I still am self-conscious but much less so now. 2. Career naivete. It was not knowing that I couldn’t actually do what I wanted to do for a living that got me in the mess I’m in now. I’m wiser now but I don’t know if there’s still time to fix things. 3. Not having a big nice kitchen in which to bake tasty desserts!
8. Are you currently enjoying any beauty products on which you recently splurged? Greatly enjoying the NARS/Andy Warhol flower palettes. I’m not using them, of course, but I love just staring at them.

Have a great week. 🙂
MM Curator says
Haha!! We’ll see how it goes…it’ll be a good test to see whether I really want to train for a full marathon!
Karen says
Don’t forget the body glide! I didn’t wear any when I did mine and I was in tears by mile 10.
Heidi says
1. Mood:
So tired. Busy weekend that was influenced by “hormonal issues.”
2. Are there any bedtime rituals or things you do to help yourself fall asleep?
Herbal tea and then relaxing music once I’m in bed.
3. What was the last makeup counter you remember visiting?

8. Are you currently enjoying any beauty products on which you recently splurged?
Not really a splurge (I’m trying to be more thrifty these days), but Trader Joe’s has a new Coconut Body Butter that is AMAZING! So moisturizing and smells heavenly.
9. What’s your favorite teen movie?
The Breakfast Club
10. Weekly goals:
Try to eat healthier and make more things from scratch. Last week was a lazy week in the kitchen.
Karen says
And I bet Missy wouldn’t have it any other way, LOL! I just snapped a pic of Tabs showing off his belly, please be sure to share it with Miss Thing: http://twitpic.com/b2d3po
Heidi says
Missy’s response: “mrowww”, followed by some major purring!
She only strikes that pose when Brian comes over. It’s her flirting pose! The other evening she followed that up with rubbing her body all over his feet. It was the strangest thing!
Karen says
Wow — she knows how to claim her man!! Way to pull out the diva card, Missy. 😀
Heidi says
Oh, yeah, it’s a regular lovefest between those two. You gotta love a man who will get down on the floor the second he gets in the front door to play with Missy! Her reaction to him Saturday night may have had a little something to do with the fact that we had just come from the Harvest Fair where we spent quite a bit of time around llamas, bunnies, horses, and other assorted critters. She probably picked up on that.
Karen says
That’s super sweet. Brian sounds very nice! Missy has good taste. 🙂
Gosh, if I came home smelling like llamas, bunnies and horses Tabs would have a fit…
Natasha says
Oooh! Pumpkin Spiced Latte! Yum! I may need to swing by a Starbucks before I take the car into the shop this afternoon…
1. Mood:sharp. Feeling like I need to get myself into gear and I’ve been too fuzzy lately, so I’m a bit brusque right now.
2. Are there any bedtime rituals or things you do to help yourself fall asleep?
I spray my pillow with a lavender-camomile aromatherapy spritz… but it’s hard to get to sleep when I know DH is still at the computer and will wake me up in a half hour, or an hour, or an hour and a half…he’s a night owl and I’ve become a morning person in the past two years, so we’re still working out the details. I was a night person for the first 18 years of marriage — but that suddenly shifted after a stint in the hospital. No clue why, but i just wake up at 7am nowadays, no matter what time I went to bed the night before…hubby gets to sleep in until 9am when he’s not teaching.
3. What was the last makeup counter you remember visiting?
Can’t remember. I stopped by the Benefit counter in Macy’s last Monday, but the make-up girl is only there Tuesdays thru Saturdays… but I’m itching to get a new perspective…
4. Do you ever take pictures with your phone? All the time! Usually of designs I’ve just drawn so I can post them to my blog or facebook. We went to a football game last Saturday and my phone took better pix of the fireworks than the camera! Seriously!
5. What’s one of the most helpful books you’ve ever read?
Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day: The Discovery That Revolutionizes Home Baking by Jeff Hertzberg and Zoe Francois
I love baking bread, and this book gives all kinds of tips for making it practically hassle-free! Not instant….but stretching the process over a couple days actually makes baking bread easier.
6. What’s the secret in your secret sauce?
Extra garlic. Fresh garlic, minced by the Korean ladies at 1st Korean Market Grocery Store in San Diego..
7. What are three things you miss about your younger days, and three things you don’t?
I miss: fast metabolism, boundless energy, and free time.
I don’t miss: social craziness, insecurity, lack of freedom and mobility. Having a car without a curfew is a beautiful thing!
8. Are you currently enjoying any beauty products on which you recently splurged? I got the UD Smoked palette for my birthday in July (from me) — and I’m still having fun trying out combinations… and recently got that tightline nailed thanks to one of your Tuesday tips!
9. What’s your favorite teen movie? Hairspray.
10. Weekly goals: Get on top of the details: calender, what needs doing, food shopping, etc. Fortunately, cat food is on auto-deliver from AMazon so we never get short of gravy for the girls…
Karen says
Hi Natasha,
Yay, glad to hear that your tight line situation has gotten better. 🙂 Which of the tips have you been using and liking?
Natasha says
I tried using UD’s 24/7 pencil — much better than the previous drugstore brand I’d tried before. And then, lightly patting on a coordinating powder eyeshadow really seemed to lock the color down. I wore the look at an event out in the desert last week — where it was 105F at 6pm! and my eyeliner didn’t budge until I removed it at 1:00am when I got home!
Tres exotique! But the liner was black (which worked b/c I was wearing black), and my natural coloring is a little softer so I’m thinking that using grey or brown might be a little less OTT. I have an order into UD for their smoked liner set which has grey, brown, and TEAL! and PLUM! So I will be playing around with tightlining for daytime use in the near future!
Karen says
NICE. UD’s liners are really great. And don’t you love how they come in about a billion colors? How do you feel about browns/golds? If you like them, UD’s Bourbon is a *must*.
Oh — if you live near a Bobbi Brown counter, hers Long-Wear Eye Pencils are awesome, too.
Natasha says
I’m eyeing a pretty gold…awesome for the holidays. I’m also a fan of copper eyeshadows, so maybe a copper eyeliner would be fab, too. Not sure who carries Bobbi Brown other than Nordstrom’s. Sephora’s way easier to get to. If I see a counter, I’ll definitely check out BB.
Karen says
Some Sephora stores carry Bobbi. So hopefully you’ll find one with the line, because her liners are AWESOME.
If you love copper shades, then you’ve gotta check out Laura Mercier’s Burnished Copper. It’s a cream shadow, but I bet you could use it as a liner too:
https://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/cosmetics/unsung-heroes-laura-mercier-metallic-creme-eye-colour-in-copper/
Hope you’re having a nice day so far! It’s early here, so I’m going to hop on the treadmill and get my workout over with.

2. Are there any bedtime rituals or things you do to help yourself fall asleep? I like a dark room, the ceiling fan on, and no jammies!
3. What was the last makeup counter you remember visiting? Urban Decay at Macy’s. I was annoyed that a man was working it, because really, what does a man know about makeup? But I ended up buying everything he recommended and I love it! I won’t buy from anyone else there!
4. Do you ever take pictures with your phone? HA! I just put over 1,300 pics from my iPhone on my computer, I take pictures allllll the time! Of everything, my family, my kids’ friends, beautiful sunsets, the treadmill at the gym so I know how far I ran, everything!

Becca @ The Beauty Sample says
1. Mood: happy and energetic after a long day of classes
2. Are there any bedtime rituals or things you do to help yourself fall asleep? Not really. I am only really particular about my skincare routine–it all HAS to be done before I go to bed. The whole thing takes me about 30 minutes but I rest easier once it’s done
3. What was the last makeup counter you remember visiting? MAC a few days ago. I was praying that by some miracle, my counter would have one of the The Perfect Cheek blushes left but alas…

6. What’s the secret in your secret sauce? Be compassionate.

There were so many subjects that I am interested in now but back then, I dicked around and didn’t use it to my advantage), and playing with all my cousins (I have a HUGE family, but because everyone is grown up and off doing their own thing, we are hardly all together in one place at the same time anymore). I don’t miss: getting grounded all the time, the pettiness of middle school/high school, and being so insecure in my skin all the time.

2. Are there any bedtime rituals or things you do to help yourself fall asleep? It sound totally obvious, but turning out most of the lights an hour or so before I go to bed. Duh. I usually read for a bit, then do the NYT crossword on my phone, then zonk out. (I am a nerd)

5. What’s one of the most helpful books you’ve ever read? The Power of Habit. Although since I read it, it makes me paranoid when I get coupons from Target for baby stuff (I am not a parent) because it makes me wonder what they know that I don’t. I also really like What I Talk About When I Talk About Running.
6. What’s the secret in your secret sauce? Probably sarcasm.
7. What are three things you miss about your younger days, and three things you don’t? Hmm. I miss not having to drive, being able to see all my friends everyday at school, and my first job at the hardware store.
