You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
Inspired! Funny (sad?) thing is, I think I feel the way I do right now because of a TV show called Friday Night Lights.I must have watched 10 episodes last weekend, and they’re an hour long each. I’m already on the fifth and final season (tear!). If you’ve never seen it before, it’s about a small West Texas town and their local high school football team.
I keep wishing that I had my own personal Coach Taylor to hover around my desk and motivate me. He’s the head coach for the team, and he would tell me stuff like, “Listen to me. You’re gonna be the best darn pet assistant in Novato, Karen. You hear me? The best darn one. You keep this up, and I promise you — you’re going all the way to state!” LOL!
- What’s one of your biggest foundation gripes?
Why is it so hard to find a comfortable, full-coverage foundation with a matte finish that perfectly matches my skin tone? Most ones I find are either too beige or too yellow, yargh! - If you were forced to wear one makeup look every day for a year, what would it be?
Cat eyes, loads of mascara and bright lips, for sure. Classic, easy and it goes with almost everything! 🙂 - Name one thing you need to (or should) stop doing?
Staying up late watching Friday Night Lights on TV. My sleep schedule is a mess because of it. It’s been taking me at least an hour to unwind when I finally get to bed around midnight because I’m so fired up from the show. - Fishnet stockings: love ’em or leave ’em?
Love ’em, but only when the mesh pattern squares or diamonds are small, and when they’re worn with things to tone down the sultriness, like a pair of tough girl Doc Martin boots or a long skirt. - It’s snack time! Today we’re having a healthy fruit salad. What’s in yours?
Grapes, blueberries, strawberries and Honeycrisp apples. Please…PLEASE, no honeydew or cantaloupe melon, blech!
- If you could take a two-month class on anything right now, what would it be?
Ooh, that’s tough! I’m kind of a nerd and love taking classes when I can. Right now, I’d take Pilates or a studio lighting class for photography. - What’s one thing in life you should stop waiting for?
For everything to be perfect, because while you’re waiting, you’ll miss all of the good things right in front of your nose. - What’s one key to success?
Repetition. Whatever it is you want to do, just keep doing it, and when you get to the point where you feel like you can do it backwards, upside down and in your sleep, do it some more. - Weekly goals:
First, I need to take care of myself this week. I want to get in at least 30 minutes of cardio daily, get to bed by 11 every night, drink lots of water throughout the day, and be kind and supportive of myself (no negative self-talk whatsoever!).
What’s up, cutie pie? Yup, another Monday, which means we get to hang out again and talk beauty shop.
Here, why don’t you man the keyboard for a minute while I go brew us some tea in the kitchen.
To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

Karen says
Hi Marina,
I have that same problem with foundation, too! Have you found any good for dry skin?
Marina says
Luckily, there are several that I like, like Daiel Sandler’s Invisible Radiance.
speaking of TV shows, I have stayed late yesterday as well, as was finishing true blood season 5 and I did not like it :/
I am watching the Rachel Zoe project now and am not even sure why.
By the way, I am a huge fan of Downton Abbey have you seen?
Karen says
One of my good friends, Cindy, is a True Blood fanatic didn’t like season 5 either! She thought there was way too much going on (I actually liked all the action, even if it tended to go over the top…for me the last couple of seasons have felt slow, and this was a good change in pace).
Oh, LOVE Downton Abbey. I heard that the new season’s already playing overseas. It’s not officially here in the US yet though.
Karen says
Re: foundation — I’ll have to see if I can hunt down that one by Daniel Sandler. I have dry bits of skin and it’s really hard to find something that doesn’t make the flakes look even flakier.
Marina says
Yes, it was a bit too much for me, especially all that Lilith, hm, ‘action’.
Yes, DA is on, episode three was shown yesterday, so I guess you can already find them on-line to watch. Something really amazing happened 😉
As for the foundation, the DS one is dewy and radiant but I have very dry skin so it’s perfect for me (you can get it at feel unique with free shipping, I get most of my stuff from there). I also like Max Factor Second Skin, but it is discontinued now. Omorovicza do FANTASTIC BB cream but is it expensive, so if you want to treat yourself…
I was told (by a top MUA)that Dior’s hydra life TM is very good but haven’t tried.
Karen says
Okay, so why were we allowed to see all of Lilith’s lady parts but not Bill’s? Not that I really want to go there, but I think it’s kind of unfair.
I’m in the thick of the last season of Friday Night Lights at the moment, so I will have to hunt down the new eps of DA when I’m done. 🙂 I hope that amazing something that happened is good!
I tried Dior’s older version of Hydra Life and liked it a LOT. Haven’t tried this one, but if it’s anything like the old one, it’s probably great for dry skin.

We saw a movie called Stars in Shorts. I DON’T recommend it! It was a series of short stories starring a bunch of famous actors. The first and last stories were really charming and entertaining, but the ones in the middle were all really dark and creepy, and not in an entertaining way, just disturbing. My friend had to walk out in the middle of one of the stories, she just couldn’t take it.

10. Weekly goals: Hit the gym four to five more times, stay on track diet-wise, organize my closet and kitchen pantry, get rid of this canker sore that popped up!

Becca @ The Beauty Sample says
1. Mood: tired and hot–I just got back from taking a test at school and couldn’t find parking so I hard to park super far away. I was pouring sweat by the time I got to my car!
2. What’s one of your biggest foundation gripes? It’s damn near impossible to find a light-medium coverage foundation with a semi-matte finish that STAYS semi-matte. Dewy, moisturizing foundations are no good for my oily skin, but I don’t like the heavy, flat look of matte foundations or the heavy feel of high-coverage foundations. I’m very picky!
3. If you were forced to wear one makeup look every day for a year, what would it be? very light foundation or tinted moisturizer, a warm, subtle peachy-pink blush, a hint of bronzer, tinted balm, and a smudgy neutral eye with lots of mascara and super smudgy liner only on my upper lashline
4. Name one thing you need to (or should) stop doing? Staying up late! I am a night owl and have the most energy at night. As a result, I’m often up til 4 or 5AM every day and get very little sleep :/
5. Fishnet stockings: love ‘em or leave ‘em? Love ’em when worn appropriately
6. It’s snack time! Today we’re having a healthy fruit salad. What’s in yours? HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE HONEYDEW AND CANTALOUPE?? 😛 It’s ok though, I’ll take yours. I’ll also add LOTS of watermelon, blueberries, blackberries, bananas, strawberries, and pineapples
7. If you could take a two-month class on anything right now, what would it be? Photography class
8. What’s one thing in life you should stop waiting for? For things to fall into your lap–you have to make it happen!
9. What is one key to success? patience and dedication
10. Weekly goals: Catch up on product photography, workout, and make time for a date with my boyfriend
Karen says
LOL, I’d happily give up my cantaloupe and honeydew melons. Both make my tongue itchy!
Lulle says
1. Mood: pretty good! I just wish it could get a little less hot here…
2. What’s one of your biggest foundation gripes? Finding a foundation that looks natural on me.
3. If you were forced to wear one makeup look every day for a year, what would it be? Nude beige/brown eyes with sheer red lips.
4. Name one thing you need to (or should) stop doing? Sleeping in late, spending too much time on the internet, being so self-critical (I don’t know it this word exist but it describes the concept perfectly well!).
5. Fishnet stockings: love ‘em or leave ‘em? They could work, but I wouldn’t say I “love” them.
6. It’s snack time! Today we’re having a healthy fruit salad. What’s in yours? Can I have an It’s It instead? Please??
7. If you could take a two-month class on anything right now, what would it be? Intensive yoga class, or something creative like scrapbooking, arts and craft… I could also use a class on Photoshop.

9. What is one key to success? Self-confidence.

3. If you were forced to wear one makeup look every day for a year, what would it be? Natural look: sheer foundation, powder, mascara, blush, lipstick
4. Name one thing you need to (or should) stop doing? Holding onto anger. Hatred sucks the energy out of no one but me.
5. Fishnet stockings: love ‘em or leave ‘em? Leave ’em!
6. It’s snack time! Today we’re having a healthy fruit salad. What’s in yours? mango, strawberries, blueberries, bananas
7. If you could take a two-month class on anything right now, what would it be? Building custom wheels for my bike.
8. What’s one thing in life you should stop waiting for? Waiting for apologies before I can forgive.
9. What is one key to success? Just do it! Seriously, no excuses. Rode my first century this weekend on ONE hour of sleep. Every muscle wanted to quit. I wanted to quit. That SAG vehicle looked so cozy. But, I would have hated myself if I didn’t accomplish the goal I set 2 months earlier. Sucked it up and set mini-goals: ride to next rest stop, catch up to the little 80 year old riding a single speed in a tweed jacket, skirt and HEELS, make it over that bridge, and the next bridge… before I knew it, it was over. Thank God!
10. Weekly goals: Treat myself to a microdermabrasion/facial, get a pedicure, take a yoga class.
Karen says
One day I want to be the 80-year-old lady wearing the tweed jacket, skirt and heels riding the single-speed bike. Seriously.

Lan Yin Tsai is quite the celebrity! She’s 87 years old and has ridden in 28(?) MS150 City to Shore rides. Truly an inspiration!
Karen says
Now I REALLY want to be her. Just add pearls and little bit of Chanel No. 5, and that’s me in 30-odd years.
Kalli says
Le List
1. Mood: Relaxed! Just Facebooking, blogging & watching Dancing With The Stars (with RHONY on next!)
2. What’s one of your biggest foundation gripes? It’s my least favorite part of my routine, just because it’s boring.
3. If you were forced to wear one makeup look every day for a year, what would it be? A brown/gold eye with lots of liner and mascara and a pretty sheer red lippie. It’s my go-to for everything!
4. Name one thing you need to (or should) stop doing? I should stop eating ice cream for dessert, but it’s so good! Tonight we had strawberries & cream sherbet
5. Fishnet stockings: love ‘em or leave ‘em? I like them, especially Spanx’s. A nude fishnet is really subtle and pretty
6. It’s snack time! Today we’re having a healthy fruit salad. What’s in yours? All we have in the house is red grapes & clementines! But I like both of those!
7. If you could take a two-month class on anything right now, what would it be? I would take a ballroom dancing class, because I’ve always wanted to.
8. What’s one thing in life you should stop waiting for? Waiting for things to happen! I have to make them happen!
9. What is one key to success? Doing what you love!
10. Weekly goals: Make time for the gym and then pack a suitcase for my weekend trip to Houston for Greek Festival!
Karen says
Hi Kalli,
The Greek Festival sounds like it’s going to be fun. Who will you be going with?
Kalli says
I am meeting up with my best friend who lives just northwest of Houston in Tomball, so I’m really excited because we haven’t hung out since July. I also have a lot of family and other friends in Houston, so I’m going to try to make the rounds in my short trip!
Karen says
How fun! Are you Greek? (Random: the gal who does my hair is Greek, and she tells me all these funny stories about growing up in a very traditional Greek family.)
Katherine G says
1. Mood:
~Tired, but happy. Just finished my work weekend and now have the whole week off to pack and prepare before my fiance and I leave for our cruise.
2. What’s one of your biggest foundation gripes?
~Probably that my skin tone is so in between shades that there is really not a foundation out there (even with Bare Minerals – I usually use their Golden Beige for light coverage since it’s a powder and it won’t break me out) that suits my skin tone. I’m half southern Italian, and half Irish/German, so my skin is partially olive, with some fairness and redness thrown in.
3. If you were forced to wear one makeup look every day for a year, what would it be?
~Definitely a bright eye look. The more eyeliners, shadows, and mascaras it takes to make a complicated eye look, the happier I am.
4. Name one thing you need to (or should) stop doing?
~Worrying. I get myself in such a tizzy sometimes that I get stress-induced migraines (the other migraines I get are either period or just random ones). I have been trying to take a step back and take a deep breath, but sometimes things make me so angry and/or worried that internally I can’t stop thinking about it and my mind goes a mile a minute. I have found that exercise has been helping a lot, but I still have a long way to go before I can completely stop my worrying habit.
5. Fishnet stockings: love ‘em or leave ‘em?
~Cute on some people, but I won’t ever wear them.
6. It’s snack time! Today we’re having a healthy fruit salad. What’s in yours?
~Oranges, blueberries, and apples 🙂 My favorites.
7. If you could take a two-month class on anything right now, what would it be?
~I would like to learn MMA. I know basic self defense, but I feel like knowing how to do MMA would up my chances of being able to defend myself better…
8. What’s one thing in life you should stop waiting for?
~Life to happen, or a career to happen. If we really want something,we have to put ourselves out there and go for it. Don’t wait to take that class or that vacation if you have the money or time to do it.
9. What is one key to success?
~Always smile and be genuinely friendly, and remember manners. It really does get people far. There are rude people who may be excellent at their jobs, but it doesn’t necessarily make them well-liked or someone considered for promotion or big projects.
10. Weekly goals:
~Make packing lists and start packing.
~Do laundry on Friday so everything that we want to wear is washed and ready to go.
~Make sure not to overpack, and bring only what is truly needed.
~Clean the house.
~Go on a run with a friend and keep exercising throughout the week!
~Stay positive and try not to worry about certain things.
Karen says
Hi Katherine,
You’re going to have so much fun on your cruise! I hope that you get lots of good time to relax.
Oh — and don’t forget to your makeup packing list. 🙂 I never leave home without mine.
Melissa says
1. Mood: sleepy, but good.
2. What’s one of your biggest foundation gripes?: It never looks totally natural. I use DiorSkin Nude and it’s still not really sheer enough for me. Still have yet to find a tinted moisturizer that works for me.
3. If you were forced to wear one makeup look every day for a year, what would it be?: Mascara and red lipstick. Basically close to what I wear every day anyway.
4. Name one thing you need to (or should) stop doing?: Popping a zit when I get one! I can’t help it.
5. Fishnet stockings: love ‘em or leave ‘em?: Leave ’em. They were good to dress up in college, but I think I’m too old for that now.
6. It’s snack time! Today we’re having a healthy fruit salad. What’s in yours?: Grapes, all types of melons and cantaloupes, strawberries, prunes, really anything is ok with me.
7. If you could take a two-month class on anything right now, what would it be?: Calligraphy
8. What’s one thing in life you should stop waiting for?: Other people to initiate conversations, I’m so shy when it comes to that type of thing!

10. Weekly goals: a LOT of things, unfortunately.
Have a great week, everyone!
Karen says
Hi Melissa,
Have you ever tried Becca’s tinted moisturizer? It’s the sheerest foundation I know of!
Astrid says
1. Mood: Today I feel pretty good. But yesterday, le Monday, it was not a good day. Some projects fell through and it’s downer. But hey, today I’m sure it’s all for a good reason in the end!
2. What’s one of your biggest foundation gripes? Perfect color and non cakey finish, for sure. Also that the good ones are usually pretty expensive and you never know if your skin will react well to it. I’m currently VERY happy with my Armani LSF though. I’m not straying anytime soon ;-).
3. If you were forced to wear one makeup look every day for a year, what would it be? I’d go for something that’ll make me look radiant, summery glow. Lighter golden eyeshadow, highlighter/peach blush, and orangey lips.
4. Name one thing you need to (or should) stop doing? Overthinking things. Most times it’s better to just go do it and think about the consequences later :P.
5. Fishnet stockings: love ‘em or leave ‘em? Leave ’em. I haven’t properly tried them though, so that might be the thing.
6. It’s snack time! Today we’re having a healthy fruit salad. What’s in yours? Blueberries (my favorite!), strawberries, banana, and kiwi :-).
7. If you could take a two-month class on anything right now, what would it be? A German language course. I’m in desperate need to improve!
8. What’s one thing in life you should stop waiting for? A permission for me to just go and do the things I’d love to do. No need for someone to tell me if I’m good at it or not. Just do it. (note: I’m better at this now, actually. I hope)
9. What is one key to success? Persistence, passion, and be genuine. (Kind of like you, Karen 😉 )
10. Weekly goals: Get the first prototype of the my app done, do some more yoga, and just chill a bit more.
Karen says
You’re too sweet, Astrid! XO
Astrid says
Haha, I’m not always sweet ;-). But yeah, I think you’re an inspiration and I always love how genuine you are! XO

2. What’s one of your biggest foundation gripes? That I can’t stand the feel of it. I need something sheer and siliconey but, unfortunately, that doesn’t offer much in the way of coverage. 🙂
3. If you were forced to wear one makeup look every day for a year, what would it be? I literally laughed out loud when I read this because, you know, for me, this question should read “if you were forced NOT to wear the same makeup look every day…” 🙂
4. Name one thing you need to (or should) stop doing? Oh, boy. My vices are too numerous to choose just one!
5. Fishnet stockings: love ‘em or leave ‘em? Going to have to leave them. If it’s not socks and sneakers, it’s hard for me to love.

7. If you could take a two-month class on anything right now, what would it be? Maybe kickboxing – I could use some motivation. Or piano, because I always wished I could play.
8. What’s one thing in life you should stop waiting for? Miracle weight loss with no side effects. HAHA! Sorry, I’m not a patient person so I don’t think I wait for anything.
9. What is one key to success? I think it’s motivation. Just the will to keep on, keepin’ on. It’s much easier if you’re doing something you enjoy, of course.
10. Weekly goals: Don’t go down in a fiery ball on my cross-country flights and hit the hotel gym every day, no matter what.
Karen says
You can do it, girl! Safe travels on the way to Seattle!
Stèphanie says

2. What’s one of your biggest foundation gripes?
Finding the perfect color!! Most of the foundations are too beige or yellow.
3. If you were forced to wear one makeup look every day for a year, what would it be?
The look I’m wearing right now! My signature look 😀 Medium coverage foundation(not too matte, not too shiny), eyebrows, concealer, mascara that makes my lashes long and curly, nude lips and a shimmery bronze golden blush from MAC.
