You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
Awake! — now that I’ve got two cups of coffee in me, and better now that I’ve done some free writing. I have this exercise where I write about whatever I want, as fast as I can, for 10 minutes. Most of the time it’s complete nonsense or babbling about tiny pumpkins or road rage, but it gets the job done.I was feeling really anxious and overwhelmed first thing this morning, but I feel about a billion times better now that I’m done. There’s just something therapeutic about getting the crazy thoughts in my head on the monitor/paper.
But some mornings, when even that’s too hard, I’ll just list out all of the things I’m grateful for, and after that I usually feel better.
I set a pretty ambitious schedule for myself today…but the Chanel holiday collection promises to calm my nerves. 🙂
- What’s your lazy day/weekend beauty routine?
Depends on how lazy I feel, but normally it’s brows, tinted moisturizer, concealer to cover my dark circles, mascara and a dash of gloss. It only takes about five minutes or so, and I always feel so much better when I’m done. - What’s one thing life has taught you?
That I’m responsible for moving my life forward. If I just kick back and wait for things to happen, chances are, they won’t. - What are your glam go-to’s (beauty or otherwise?)
A bright lipstick like MAC Impassioned, a pretty pair of Michael Kors Braided Chain Platform heels and a couple spritzes of Chanel Coco Mademoiselle perfume… Coco Mademoiselle works miracles, I tell ya! I spritzed some on the other night after my shower, and even though I was wearing my plaid pajamas, I felt like the belle of the ball, LOL! - Ramen: love it or leave it?
I hate to say this because I know that it’s saltier than salt and filled with preservatives…but I love the stuff. LOVE IT! Especially with sliced fish cake and bok choy, NOM! - It’s okay to (FILL IN THE BLANK).
Eat cookies/cake for breakfast, admit that you’re wrong, forgive yourself, and forgive others, (even when they’ve really, really hurt you). - What’s the most isolated place you’ve ever lived?
Um…probably Davis, where I went to school. It’s a small college town about two hours north of the Bay Area out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by farm land. - The last time you sat next to a stranger on a plane, did you chat with them?
I did. I usually try to chat a bit with the people seated next to me on airplanes because I figure, if you’re going to be sharing such cramped quarters with someone for such a long time, might as well try to make it as pleasant as possible. Plus, you never know who’s going to have a good story to tell! - What kind of emails annoy you?
The one-word emails that just say “Thanks” and get cc’d to a big group of people. Really? Was that really necessary to send to EVERYONE? - Weekly goals:
“Never give up! Never surrender!” – Galaxy Quest, 1999
Howdy, sweets! 🙂 I hope you have a little time to stop by and say hello.

Karen says
Hi Natasha!
I hope you had a wonderful Monday. Great advice in your answer to number 3.
Eek! What’s going on with Sahara?
Natasha says
Miss Opportunity discovered a flaw in the screen and went on a walkabout Friday night. On Saturday morning only one cat gave the morning serenade So I knew something was wrong. Fortunately, she hadn’t gone far and was hiding in the garden shed. Now that she knows about the screen’s weak point, we can’t leave the door open and unattended. It was 96f yesterday so not having cross-ventilation really bites.

Karen says
Hi Chelsea,
Happy Monday! Are you dressing up for Halloween this year? I still have yet to decide on a costume…
Chelsea says
I think I might actually dress up this year! I’m helping my ad prof host a music and advertising jam on October 29th, so we’re thinking we’ll had a costume contest as well. I’m thinking Medusa… I wanted to do that last year, but didn’t dress up! I thought about doing Axl Rose too, but I’d really have to smush my boobs down to pull that off!
I’m going to a girl’s night/craft night at a friend’s house on Saturday, so I’ll work on my costume then!
Karen says
Medusa would be really cool if you could make a crazy mask. (Side note: I used to have nightmares about her after watching Clash of the Titans when I was 5). Axl Rose sounds easier in theory…you’d definitely need some pleather pants!
Rita says
1. Mood: Tired – yawn – it’s late…

6. It’s okay to be yourself.

That life is too short and not to hold grudges.
4. What are your glam go-to’s (beauty or otherwise?)

We have a second home in Maine that is 100% off the grid. It is in the woods 1 mile from a road. Very isolated!
8. The last time you sat next to a stranger on a plane, did you chat with them? I tend to chat with them but not to overdo it. I have a book or magazine out that I can quickly switch to.

Pretty much daily (and after getting a voice mail that says the same thing): “Did you get the fax I sent?”
10. Weekly goals: To prep for a wedding we are traveling to on Friday and the mini vacation and business trip right after that.
Karen says
Hi Leah,
LOL, yeah, he’s been flashing it all day! He’s extra needy for some reason.
How’s your Monday going?
Kate & Zena says
1. Mood:
Alive. Now that I don’t have a headache from my shots anymore, I’m a have an equal mix of tiredness and alertness. It’s a bit weird, I know.
2. What’s your lazy day/weekend beauty routine?
I kind of do whatever I feel like doing. My routine never really changes, unless I really feel like experimenting with my look!
3. Whats one thing life has taught you?
That to expect the unexpected…literally. I’ve been the one that has thrown my mom and, quite frankly, myself the most loops. I’ve survived and gone through a lot, but I’m still here!
4. What are your glam go-to’s (beauty or otherwise?)
A medium brown smoky (ahem, I’m quite known for slapping on UD Virgin, Naked and Buck–occasionally adding Darkhorse–with some Perversion and mascara!), Stila Grapefruit, pink cheeks (I tend to use Stila CC in Petunia!) and groomed brows! Instant glam face even when I feel like crap!
5. Ramen: love it or leave it?
Leave! It reminds me of soup…and I LOATHE soup!
6. It’s okay to (FILL IN THE BLANK)
Take a day off and pamper yourself. Not taking care of yourself can make you ill!
7. What’s the most isolated place you’ve ever lived?
Bamberg, Bavaria, West Germany. We lived a whole ocean and continent away from our family. If my relatives wanted to visit, they had to take a plane to visit us! I don’t remember Germany, but I have lots and lots and lots of photos of Germany!
8. The last time you sat next to a stranger on a plane, did you chat with them?
That’s never happened to me! Even when I was on a plane from Germany to the US, I was with my mom!
9. What kind of emails annoy you?
Spam, especially the ones that says, “Bored Housewife Looking for Sex.” Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
10. Weekly goals:
Bathe Zeebers (I’ve been super lazy!)
Take driver’s test.
Vacuum.
Karen says
Good luck on your driver’s test, Kate. Are you ready?
Kate & Zena says
Pretty much. Basically, since I forgot to renew my driver’s license for two years (you can thank my dad for that), I have to take both the written (which I passed with a 100%) and the behind-the-wheel portion AGAIN. Ugh.
I just need to practice my U-Turn the most. >.< Stupid U-Turn. Why in the world do I need to learn U-Turns? I never use them anyway. *is a wimp* It's like the corner reverse; when are you ever going to back around a corner? Uh, never???
Have you decided what you and Tabs are going to be for Halloween yet?
Karen says
Well, good luck on your test! I’m sure you’ll do great.
I’ve been looking around for costumes and have yet to find one that moves me as much as his shark costume from last year. Went to Marshall’s over the weekend and saw a bunch of really cute doggie ones…dogs get the best outfits, I swear.
Will Z. be dressing up this year?
Kate & Zena says
Yes, she dons the same costume every single year. She dons the same costume because it describes her perfectly. She goes as a skunk, not because she’s stinky or she loves really stinky food and treats (stinky food, yes, she has), but because she’s so stinkin’ cute.
Yea, we’re weird like that. I had to retrofit the costume so it fit her and so that the hood was detachable. She hates hoods/hats! Normally, I tie the hood on long enough to attempt to snap a few photos and then take it off her before rips it to shreds!
Well, he can always wear one he all ready has! He can don a tuxedo and be James Tabby. I’m being Katniss.
Rachael says
1. Mood: Tired.
2. What’s your lazy day/weekend beauty routine? Tinted Moisturizer, mascara, cheek stain, and maybe eyeliner.
3. Whats one thing life has taught you? Your true friends will be there when you hit rock bottom when no one else will.
4. What are your glam go-to’s (beauty or otherwise?) My purple Elie Tahari dress and black peep toe pumps. The best part about that cocktail dress is the straps so I can wear a real bra!
5. Ramen: love it or leave it? Leave it, way too salty.
6. It’s okay to eat desserts for breakfast providing that there is at least some fruit. The fruit is what makes it alright according to my Mama.
7. What’s the most isolated place you’ve ever lived? My parent’s tree farm. Twenty minutes from a gas station, 35 from a grocery store and the closest neighbors were over 2 miles away.
8. The last time you sat next to a stranger on a plane, did you chat with them? No. It was a red eye, and she was fortunate enough to be able to sleep.
9. What kind of emails annoy you? Any of the ones from stores I frequent, I get it World Market, you have a sale every weekend.
10. Weekly goals: Survive and clean.
Karen says
Hi Rachael,
Love your mom’s advice…I’m off to eat some cookies and fruit now, LOL!
Stef Smith says
1. Mood: Relaxed! I love Mondays! I finally get some alone time, the husband was off work all last week and I need a certain amount of time alone per day to function normally!
2. What’s your lazy day/weekend beauty routine? I don’t wear makeup unless I’m leaving the house, so most weekends it’s just a daily moisturizer with SPF and lip balm with SPF.
3. Whats one thing life has taught you? That you get out of it what you put into it. The UPS man isn’t going to come to the house with a box filled with the perfect spouse, the perfect job, and the perfect life. You have to go out and make those things happen!
4. What are your glam go-to’s (beauty or otherwise?) Urban Decay Naked lip gloss, China Glaze Ruby Slippers nail polish, a sparkly pair of hoops or drop earrings, and a cocktail with dinner!
5. Ramen: love it or leave it? I love it, the chicken flavor, but I stay away from it. I always feel shaky afterwards, so it’s not worth it.
6. It’s okay to (FILL IN THE BLANK). Drink a Frappuccino from Starbucks in lieu of lunch, take some time for yourself without your family, go on a nail polish buying spree every now and then!
7. What’s the most isolated place you’ve ever lived? I grew up isolated! I grew up in California’s Central Valley in a very small farming town, on a working cotton and then walnut farm. My Dad still farms walnuts. It was an amazing childhood!
8. The last time you sat next to a stranger on a plane, did you chat with them? I talk to everybody, it’s just how I am!
9. What kind of emails annoy you? Junk emails. I sign up for newsletters, that at the time I want, but then I get tired of. I use Facebook for my personal messages, so my email is almost obsolete.
10. Weekly goals: Hit the gym at least four or five times. Put the laundry away. Make up a grocery list!
Karen says
Hi Stef,
Your childhood sounds like it was really cool. Do you ever think you’ll move back to a small town?
Christina says
1. Mood: I got a good endorphin high thanks to my morning modern dance class and then working out at the gym after my Filipino Culture class.
After all the crazy science schedules I’ve had in the past, this is significantly more laid back!
2. What’s your lazy day/weekend beauty routine? I’ll get my hair as neat as possible (even after thinning and layering, my hair can get quite fluffy) and put on some liquid sunscreen and dab my fave coral Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment. Super lazy 😛
3. Whats one thing life has taught you? Taking risks helps you grow.
4. What are your glam go-to’s (beauty or otherwise?) My Lancome L’Absolut Rouge Lipstick in Caprice, some spritzes of my Burberry Brit eau de parfum and a cute pair of earrings!
5. Ramen: love it or leave it? LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! Especially when I can get some legit ramen at a Japanese restaurant!
6. It’s okay to… sleep in a little longer and treat yourself to that Salted Caramel Hot Cocoa or Pumpkin Spice Latte! (Ah, can you tell I’m loving the fall flavors back at Starbucks?)
7. What’s the most isolated place you’ve ever lived? I guess it would be when I lived in Bonita, CA but I don’t think its really isolated. I’ve been a city girl my whole life!
8. The last time you sat next to a stranger on a plane, did you chat with them? I haven’t flown on a plane in over 4 years and the last time I did, I was asleep the entire flight XD
9. What kind of emails annoy you? The kind of emails that you KNOW the person should have responded to but they haven’t!
10. Weekly goals: To work on pharmacy applications and clean my room XD
Karen says
Sounds like you’re taking some fun classes! What else are you studying right now?
Heidi says
1. Mood:
Tired, but good. Speaking of Davis I was actually there on Saturday. Brian and I were in the area and neither of us had ever been to Davis so we spent the afternoon wandering around the downtown area and had a great time.
2. What’s your lazy day/weekend beauty routine?
Tinted moisturizer, lip and cheek tint, eyeliner, mascara, concealer under the eyes — done!
3. Whats one thing life has taught you?
Cherish every moment with the people you care about. You never know what the future holds.
4. What are your glam go-to’s (beauty or otherwise?)
A smokey eye, plum lips, and a spritz of CLEAN Ultimate cologne.
5. Ramen: love it or leave it?
Love it, guilty as charged!
6. It’s okay to (FILL IN THE BLANK).
be vulnerable around other people (still working on that one).
7. What’s the most isolated place you’ve ever lived?
Well, I was born and raised in the Bay Area and didn’t really feel like it was all that isolated. I suppose when I was a little kid Novato wasn’t the thriving metropolis that it is now (right, Karen?).
8. The last time you sat next to a stranger on a plane, did you chat with them?
I’ve never sat next to a stranger on a plane, always a friend.
9. What kind of emails annoy you?
The kind that says to forward this to a certain number of friends.
10. Weekly goals:
Cleaning and grocery shopping.
Karen says
LOL…you know Novato is a bustling town filled with turkeys and tabbies!
What was the weather like in Davis? Is it still hot?
Heidi says
Oh, yeah. It was hot. Probably at least in the 90s. We really noticed the difference in the temperature drop the closer we got to home. When we left Davis it was pitch dark but still in the 80s, by the time we were back in Sonoma County it was in the 50s.
Karen says
I don’t miss the smell of cow poop, but I do miss being able to walk around at night with shorts on. Le sigh! Did you guys have a bite to eat when you were there?
Heidi says
It was very tempting to munch our way around, there were so many choices! We got ice cream, then later Brian had to get coffee so we went into some organic coffee place and got some pastry, and then we went to a really good Chinese place for dinner before we left. We’re planning to go back soon and explore some more.
Em says
1. Mood: Stressed.
2. What’s your lazy day/weekend beauty routine? Concealer, a bit of foundation only where I need it, mascara, and black eyeliner.
3. Whats one thing life has taught you? You really SHOULD do something you love. REALLY cliched but true.
4. What are your glam go-to’s (beauty or otherwise?): Cat eye liner, vanilla perfume and leather boots.
5. Ramen: love it or leave it? I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never tried it…but I’m DYING to! (If anyone can give me a really good description I’d love it ;))
6. It’s okay to (FILL IN THE BLANK). Eat dessert! I hate it when people refuse it but you can tell they really want it.
7. What’s the most isolated place you’ve ever lived? Ohmygod Karen…I lived in Davis too!
8. The last time you sat next to a stranger on a plane, did you chat with them? Yeah, I was on my way to New York City and sitting by myself for the first time…we talked about Tiffany’s, her boyfriend and Central Park.
9. What kind of emails annoy you? CHAIN EMAILS. Ugh. And Spam. And when a store e-mails you to tell you they’re having a sale for the third time that week (and, yes, you still can’t afford the top)
10. Weekly goals: Get up and be happy.
Karen says
Right with you on doing something you love, Em. 🙂
Tiffanie says
I just have to say that I cannot wait to see your reviews on the Chanel holiday collection! And, I agree, Coco Mademoiselle can make any day feel more glamorous.
Karen says
Hi Tiffanie,
I’ve been staring at the quad all morning and don’t have the heart to dig into it! It’s so pretty. 🙂 I’ll have pictures up soon.
Random — but have you sniffed the Coco Mademoiselle soap? It’s actually really pretty.
Tiffanie says
That first swipe into a new product is always bittersweet, especially on a beauty like that one. And, yes, I’ve had two bars of the soap. It’s wonderful. I have also had the lotion, the body oil and body wash. I’m a bit of an addict! Do you have the eau de parfum or the parfum? I’ve heard the scent is different. The local Nordstrom doesn’t have a sample of the parfum so I’m hesitant to try it when I know I absolutely love the eau de parfum.
Karen says
I have the eau de parfum and I love it! I’ll definitely have to get the body oil next.
I keep wanting to wear other Chanel scents, like Allure, but by far Coco Mademoiselle is my fave.
Suri says
1. Mood: Exhausted. I barely slept last night and it was a longgg day at work.

2. What’s your lazy day/weekend beauty routine? Tinted moisturizer & lipstick/gloss

4. What are your glam go-to’s (beauty or otherwise?): chanel rouge allure in dragon, shu uemura lashes and sexy heels.
5. Ramen: love it or leave it? I’ve grown up with eating it so its definitely a love I’ve passed on to college roommates and now my kiddies. looove it with egg (or tofu) and bok choy…yummmo!
6. It’s okay to (FILL IN THE BLANK): cry. I’m not a crier…unless my hormones are stronger than my will (it rarely happens). And that I don’t always have to be the strong one.
7. What’s the most isolated place you’ve ever lived? Can’t say I’ve ever lived anywhere isolated…I have vacationed in a remote part of Montana which reminded me of The Shining. It was beautiful but I’ve seen too many scary movies and haven’t been back since.
8. The last time you sat next to a stranger on a plane, did you chat with them? It depends. If I’m flying with my kids then we occupy the whole row so I’m mostly finding things to occupy them. If I’m flying solo, then I’ll chat a bit but since its a rarity, I like to sleep.
9. What kind of emails annoy you? When the sender specifically requests to send responses directly to him/her and people reply all. Thanks for unnecessarily clogging up my inbox!
10. Weekly goals: Get through my account clean up at work. Draft a workable schedule for the kids with homework, practice, dinner and QT crammed into 4 hours.

Hi Lulle,
The story about the nun on the plane reminds me of my mom…when I first started driving, she used to pray whenever she got in the car with me, LOL! Drove me NUTS. I had to tell her to stop.
Kate & Zena says
Karen,
I’d rather take your mom praying than my dad. I had to practice night driving today and only my dad was available. My dad, ye old Army major, was like, “CAR!” even when I noticed it; then on the way home, it was, “Watch your speed limit! There’s a cop right there, Katie!!!!” Um, I was going four miles over the speed limit. And you know how they all do they imaginary brake thing? Well he said, “I don’t need an imaginary brake; I have one next to my hand [meaning the hand brake.]” My dad is a nutcase.
Whoever said your dad should teach you how to drive obviously never met mine. You feel like a hamster in a wheel and no way out.

3. Don’t let the superficial stuff rule your life. Looks fade and your are left with the person inside.
4. What are your glam go-to’s (beauty or otherwise?) My go to glam beauty look is a bold lip (preferrably red) subtle bronzer, lots of black mascara and a good foundation. 1. Mood:
~Tired. Fiance had a kidney stone, got treated where we work, and had to go home via his mom. It was a long day at work and we were really short staffed! Typical Monday.
2. What’s your lazy day/weekend beauty routine?
~Hair in a ponytail and minimal makeup. I might do blush, concealer (usually for zits, I don’t tend to get dark eye circles that I’m aware of), and my Physician’s Formula mineral glow compact.
3. Whats one thing life has taught you?
~That life is precious. Working in trauma and critical care for the better part of my life and career I have learned that life can be snatched away quicker than you think. I appreciate and love all and any time and experiences I get with the ones I love. I appreciate my body and try to take care of it the best I can. Another thing I’ve learned is just because I witness how precious and fragile life is, doesn’t mean I have to be afraid. I’m aware of the dangers and take precautions when I do anything, and other than that, I don’t worry about it.
4. What are your glam go-to’s (beauty or otherwise?)
~my weight bench, running shoes/clothes (keeping and getting my body super buff), Nars Orgasm blush, Rimmel ScandalEyes mascara, UD 24/7 eyeliners, and Victoria’s Secret Perfect Body luminizing lotion.
5. Ramen: love it or leave it?
~Love it, I’m addicted to salt!
6. It’s okay to (FILL IN THE BLANK).
~to cry or grieve about things (we don’t have to be strong all the time!), to take a nap or a sick day if you need one (you realize the housework can wait another day), to have a bad workout day but not let it affect you, to not feel motivated some days, to indulge in things from time to time whether it’s running shoes that feel like pillows on your feet or really luxe makeup, and to make mistakes.
7. What’s the most isolated place you’ve ever lived?
~Probably my hometown of Olney before it started getting more built up. It is not close to anything – the highways are all 15 to 25 minutes away. Frederick is somewhat isolated but also somewhat built up and the highways are 5 minutes from my house now.
8. The last time you sat next to a stranger on a plane, did you chat with them?
~Haven’t been on a plane since I was 11, but I would probably talk to a stranger if it was a long flight.
9. What kind of emails annoy you?
~Also the ones that say “Thanks” or are really short compared to my long, detailed ones.
10. Weekly goals:
~Keep doing the bench press and arm weights as well as push-ups and pull-ups every day.
~Get some good solid runs in, and increase mileage.
~Stay positive and be happy!
Karen says
Hi Katherine,
Good for you for doing pull ups (GO GIRL!). I can’t do them anymore.

4. What are your glam go-to’s (beauty or otherwise?) Putting on a great pair of shoes, a fancy necklace, and some lipstick. The eyeliner is on all of the time!
5. Ramen: love it or leave it? No I’m a veggie so no meat flavored stuff plus I prefer pasta made out of veggies!
6. It’s okay to (FILL IN THE BLANK). Say no thank you.

2. What’s your lazy day/weekend beauty routine? – moisturizer, BROWS, lip balm, maybe some of my TF Milk Chocolate Soleil bronzer
3. Whats one thing life has taught you? – I suppose it is more what my undergrad degree taught me that I now apply to life: the fundamental attribution error. it is a way where we automatically assume that internal factors contribute to someone else’s decisions, shortcomings, etc., while we assume that our self is only ruled by external forces. I apply this to situations at work all of the time when wondering “why the hell isn’t that done yet? what is WRONG with that person that they can’t get me that?!?!” 🙂
4. What are your glam go-to’s (beauty or otherwise?) – hot rollers, false lashes, black gel liner (cat eye of course).

7. What’s the most isolated place you’ve ever lived? for a few months I lived with a friend whose closest neighbors were a few miles away.

9. What kind of emails annoy you? “funny” forwards from my dad. sad to say, some day I know I will miss them – but we have a pretty different sense of humor and he is relentless with sending those things, so I asked him to stop!
10. Weekly goals: keep doing a good job with portion control!
