- You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
Happy. 🙂 I got to see and do some new things this weekend, namely Stafford Lake and the Point Reyes Lighthouse, and also had some downtime to just relax, play with makeup and watch brainless TV, so I feel really good right now.
- Your favorite sandwich?
Ah, the sandwich, that miracle of quick culinary miracles. I have a couple of favorites. At home, I’m partial to peanut butter and banana on whole wheat bread, but the bread has to be soft and fresh, and the bananas, slightly under ripe. If I see even one of those brown freckles on the peel, I won’t touch ’em!As for favorite restaurant sandwiches, that would be the niño pobre at Sol Food, a local Puerto Rican place in nearby San Rafael. Breaded, fried prawns on toasted French bread with lettuce, tomato, and cilantro lime mayonnaise…
Man, I don’t care how early it is. I could really go for one of those right now.
They don’t exactly qualify as health food, that’s for sure, but sometimes I just don’t care.
- What’s your lucky number?
9, like the date of my birthday (June 9). - Something you no longer worry about but did at one time?
That’s a tough one for me, because as a natural worrywart, I’m worried that I’ll overlook something important, LOL!I guess the first thing that comes to mind is marriage, since El Hub and I just celebrated our six-year anniversary (the reason for the trip to Point Reyes on Saturday). Before El Hub and I got hitched, I worried about being ready for marriage. I guess it’s safe to say that I no longer worry about that anymore.
- When was the last time you rode a roller coaster?
It was on a trip to Disneyland in 2010 to preview the MAC Venomous Villains collection. - What are four things you like about your neighborhood?
1) The weather, because it’s warmer and sunnier than Mill Valley, where we lived before, which was foggy and cooler, being so much closer to the Golden Gate; 2) the open space and surrounding hills; 3) being within driving distance of Wine Country (to the north) and San Francisco (to the south); and 4) the peace and quiet of living in a relatively small city (about 49,000 people).Part of me will always love the big city, but after an adjustment period I’ve grown to love living in the burbs. It’s quieter, less expensive, much easier to find parking, and I don’t always feel on guard, like I did a lot of the time when I lived in SF.
- When was the last time you got your hair did?
Late April. I’m way overdue for a visit. - How old were you when you started regularly wearing makeup?
I wasn’t officially allowed to start wearing makeup until I turned 14, but unofficially, I started in middle school with some purple eyeliner, which I covertly applied after I left the house, LOL! - Do you prefer shopping for makeup alone or with a buddy?
I can spend hours looking at makeup, swatching different products, asking questions of the sales associates and artists, and I can’t in good conscience do that to a friend, haha! Most of the time, I prefer to go alone, unless I know that the person I’m shopping with likes makeup as much as I do (and doesn’t have to be somewhere else for a few hours). - Weekly goals:
To try at least one new eye look, to track down at least two new healthy dinner recipes, and to actually prepare at least one of them (LOL!).
Good morning, friend! I hope you had a nice weekend. What was the highlight? Did you do anything special or fun?
I feel really good this morning, so if you need a little lift, allow me to transmit a few beams of sunshine to you over the Internet.
Bzzzzzzz…
There we go. Transmission complete.
If you have a minute, drop me a line, and let me know how you’re doing in today’s Monday Poll.

1. Mood:
Sleepy! It just suddenly hit me while sitting at my desk.
2. Your favorite sandwich?
At home, I love me a good grilled cheese. When I’m at Panera, I like their Frontega Chicken Sandwich with cheese and carmelized onions.
3. What’s your lucky number?
Hm, probably even numbers in general. It seems like good things and significant events happen in even numbered years.
4. Something you no longer worry about but did at one time?
I used to worry about getting a job. I’m very thankful and blessed to have found a great job right out of college and I’ve been here ever since.
5. When was the last time you rode a roller coaster?
It’s been more than 15 years. I think it was during a class trip during my senior year of high school.
6. What are four things you like about your neighborhood?
1 – It’s affordable

4 – It’s where I found Mingus. 🙂 I have no idea where he came from, but he changed my life for the better.
7. When was the last time you got your hair did?
About a week ago. I’m wearing my hair a bit longer, so I just got a trim.

I think it was middle school and it was not good! It was the 80s and I was clueless about how to apply makeup.
9. Do you prefer shopping for makeup alone or with a buddy?
Alone. I actually like to look online so I can read reviews and narrow down what I want.
10. Weekly goals:
Clean out my car. I need to clean the seats and do some serious vacuuming.
I was off work starting last Wednesday which was fantastic! We had some people over on the 4th and on Sunday I saw the new Spider Man movie. I never read the comics, but I did enjoy the first 3 movies and I thought the new one was great.
For healthy recipes, I usually peruse the Cooking Light site and I found a new (to me) food blog called Prevention RD that’s got lots of good recipes.
Have a great day!

I’m off to bed as I read this post so I’m too sleepy to do the entire poll. The weekend was a little dull as my bf has moved away for work and I miss him terribly! On the upside, my sisters came over for the night and we had a great time!
Its so good to see you in good spirits Karen 🙂
Stephanie/Yukaeshi says
1. Mood:
Feeling very blessed and loved at the moment 🙂
2. Your favorite sandwich?
I love egg sandwiches. The egg salad kind (Where hard boiled eggs are mashed up with mayonnaise and black pepper). Just that and bread and I’m done and very happy! 😀
3. What’s your lucky number?
6, or 9! September 6 😉
4. Something you no longer worry about but did at one time?
My hair. I used to worry A LOT about how my hair looks because I got teased a lot (I have very coarse, wavy hair) but I’ve slowly grown to embrace it and love it. I have it permed now to be more “even” (My waves are pretty crazy) and couldn’t be happier with it.
5. When was the last time you rode a roller coaster?
Ages ago. I think it must be more than 5 years at an amusement park.
6. What are four things you like about your neighborhood?
Hmmm a) It’s a gated and guarded community, which means safety is relatively good around here (Touch wood), b) It’s near everywhere and well-connected I’d said, c) I have most of what I want/need nearby and d) It’s relatively peaceful and calm.
7. When was the last time you got your hair did?
Last month. My curls were too big and saggy (It makes me look more mature/older) so had them done in tight curls and re-dyed in bright red (My default colour).
8. How old were you when you started regularly wearing makeup?
I think I seriously started wearing makeup when I was 21 and it was foundation. I only wore eyeliner (Yes, only eyeliner) when I was 19 on wards though and it still hasn’t changed much- my makeup routine is now just foundation or powder, eyeliner and mascara! 😛
9. Do you prefer shopping for makeup alone or with a buddy?
Alone. I like to potter around and take my time, walking around, swatching, reading boxes, etc. Though I don’t mind shopping with my Mum (Though she can get a little impatient), and my boyfriend is lovely to shop with (He has the patience of a saint when I shop for makeup and drag him from counter to counter).
10. Weekly goals:
– Get a blog post scheduled. Seriously, I need to get back into the blogging groove, but my main problem has been taking photos actually. Too fussy!
– Redeem my MAC Russian Red from the Back To MAC program. No more delaying! 😛
TrippyPixie says
1. Mood: Tired. I had to drive in the city, and then in a Walmart parking lot, both of which happen to be very exhausting. I’m practicing before I go in to get my license, so I’m not used to driving for long stretches of time.
2. Your favorite sandwich?: I don’t have a favorite, but I do eat different kinds, usually homemade. For non-homemade sandwiches, I really like Corner Bakery’s Club Panini (with dijon mustard, Tabasco sauce, and extra mayo added).
3. What’s your lucky number?: 8.
4. Something you no longer worry about but did at one time?: How to pay for college. I ended up getting a scholarship later on, so I don’t have to worry as much anymore.
5. When was the last time you rode a roller coaster?: Two years ago, when I went to Six Flags for a physics field trip. I hate roller coasters, but was physically dragged on by the people I was hanging out with. At least it didn’t go upside-down.
6. What are four things you like about your neighborhood?:
1) Its location. It’s by the highway that leads to downtown. I like that we’re outside of the city, since it’s crowded and the traffic is horrible, but we’re close enough that it doesn’t feel like we’re in the middle of nowhere. There are also a lot of things nearby, like malls, stores, movie theaters, and so on.
2) The diversity. My whole town is, and I also went to very diverse schools.
3) It’s a bit on the small side (about 20,000 people). I don’t want to live in a town where everybody knows each other, but I hate being in places where I’m surrounded by people. I like my privacy. My cousins from Austria, knowing how many people live in America, thought that houses were going to be on top of each other in order to fit us all. However, they ended up being surprised by all of the open space we have.
4) How wide the streets are on my block, since I live in the suburbs. I don’t have to parallel park! I can just pull up alongside a curb, or in my driveway, and I’m good to go! (It’s weird, though, since some other suburbs have narrow streets like the city does, so you end up having to parallel park.)
7. When was the last time you got your hair did?: By “did”, meaning an updo, during the third week of May, since I had prom. By “did”, meaning a haircut, I got it done a week after prom, so it would be nice for graduation that was at the end of May.
8. How old were you when you started regularly wearing makeup?: I was always allowed to wear lip balm (especially in winter), but I was able to wear SOME eyeliner and sheer lip gloss in 6th grade. In high school, I was allowed to have a full face of makeup, as long as it was done tastefully (read: no black smokey eyes for school, or orange-colored skin). However, I usually go bare-faced most days, since it’s easier. For special occasions, I put makeup on.
9. Do you prefer shopping for makeup alone or with a buddy?: With a buddy, since I can get their opinion on whether a color looks good on me or not. Also, I need them so they can help me figure out whether I should buy the product or not. However, since I own a pretty good amount of makeup, the answer is usually “no, don’t buy it, since you don’t need it”. I really need another person to help me walk away from a pointless purchase.
10. Weekly goals: Clean my room and go through my closet. Donate my unwanted clothes to charity.

1. Mood:
~Sleepy and content. Had a really busy week last week and busy work weekend, so today I slept, did a small workout, and did some makeup shopping at the nearby Ulta for a pick-me-up.
2. Your favorite sandwich?
~I also used to love peanut butter and banana until I became allergic to bananas. Now I love peanut butter and honey. As for restaurant sandwiches, living in MD I can always go for a crabcake sandwich, or a good chicken salad sandwich.
3. What’s your lucky number?
~7. Have always loved that number since I was a kid.
4. Something you no longer worry about but did at one time?
~I am also a worrywart. I always envision the worst case scenario (in my own life, funnily enough I’m in a high stress job and very comfortable in it). I guess you could say I no longer worry about new things in my life. You only live once, and you gain a lot by trying new things!
5. When was the last time you rode a roller coaster?
~Last summer when me and the fiance went to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. I braved Apollo’s Chariot, which at 210 feet for the first drop is the tallest one in the park.
6. What are four things you like about your neighborhood?
~My old neighborhood in Montgomery County I liked: 1) fairly close proximity by many different roads – not just highway – to major cities like DC and Baltimore. 2) friendly, relatively safe neighborhood with lots of parks and running trails. 3) having a big backyard to play football with relatives. 4) being 5 minutes away CVS and the doctors’ offices.
~My new neighborhood that I’m slowly making the move to in Frederick County: 1) close proximity to the highway to get to places like Rockville, DC, or Baltimore. 2) Friendly neighbors who are becoming good friends (this is a townhouse community – Mo Co is suburbia). 3) A huge park with great running trails and playground equipment to work out on a 5 to 10 minute run away. 4). Close proximity to historical Civil War battlefields (Antietam 30 minutes away, Monocacy just up the road), beautiful mountains, and happy, gurgling rivers.
7. When was the last time you got your hair did?
~In early June, so I will be due in another month. I really love my hair stylist!
8. How old were you when you started regularly wearing makeup?
~I was in high school when I got a free makeup kit from subscribing to 17 magazine, and I probably started really playing with makeup and wearing it every day in college. I’ve only been a makeup junkie for about 3 years – that’s when I discovered Sephora and Ulta! In high school I used to play with brightly colored makeup from the drugstore though. It wasn’t until the past couple of years that I learned how to blend my makeup and create amazing eye looks. I am 24 now.
9. Do you prefer shopping for makeup alone or with a buddy?
~Well, today, since I spent some good money, I was very happy to be alone. I’m definitely more into it when I’m alone because I go after what I really want and get good deals (especially at Ulta and Sephora). If I go with a buddy, I am not usually looking for anything specific or don’t want to spend a lot of money. It’s rare that I go with a friend who likes to spend money on shopping trips. I have one friend whom I don’t feel guilty if I spend money on makeup because she does it too!
10. Weekly goals:
~Run every day since it is going to be in the 80’s (thank you thunderstorms last night and this morning!).
~Do something fun with the fiance.
~Stay positive and happy!
Karen says
Hi Katherine!
I’m with you on the running. I skipped a few days last week and I’m starting to get antsy.
What did you pick up at Ulta?
Katherine G says
I got some of the NYX Slide On, Glide On Eyeliners (in Golden Olive, Azure, Pink Suede, and Sparkly Black), Rimmel Exaggerate Eyeliner in Deep Ocean, L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadows in Eternal Sunshine and Amber Rush (they don’t have the new ones yet – I actually went there to get Endless Sea), the UD Black Eye Palette (looks like some neat colors in there), and Versace Yellow Diamond perfume (the smallest one). Today was a bigger shopping spree, but because of my Ulta Rewards card and also the fact they were having a sale, I got like 50 bucks off. So it wasn’t an expensive makeup spree this time hahahaha. Sephora always gets me worse than Ulta with the MUFE, Nars, Dior and UD stuff!
Tania says
1. Mood: honestly I’m mad I HATE Sam’s Club right now.

6. What are four things you like about your neighborhood? I love how fun my neighbors are; everyone’s always having a party or a get-together, and everyone is so friendly. Things are quiet during the day and clean, and everyone keeps their houses and yards in tip-top shape.
7. When was the last time you got your hair did? On Thursday! I got long layers and side-swept bangs and learned a new way of giving myself a blow out. Fun!
8. How old were you when you started regularly wearing makeup? I think 12. My mama started me YOUNG, lol. She took me to the Clinique counter and got me hooked on pink lip gloss, purple eyeshadow, and skincare. Even though I’m into different brands today, those obsessions have stuck with me!
9. Do you prefer shopping for makeup alone or with a buddy? It depends on my mood, but usually I like to do it alone. My mom is a great partner though!
10. Weekly goals: GET A INTERNSHIP JOB! And organize my stash. 😀

7. When was the last time you got your hair did?

Rachael says
1. Mood: Tired. He couldn’t sleep last night so he made sure that I didn’t sleep either.

3. What’s your lucky number? I don’t have one.
4. Something you no longer worry about but did at one time? Panic attacks. I used to get them all the time but it’s been a bit.
5. When was the last time you rode a roller coaster? The Incredible Hulk at Universal in May
6. What are four things you like about your neighborhood? Quiet neighbors (they’re mostly older and widowed ladies), being across the street from the Erie Canal Towpath, within delivery distance from an amazing Thai place, finally having space to plan our own plants and flowers.
7. When was the last time you got your hair did? Mid June.
8. How old were you when you started regularly wearing makeup? 7th grade, all it was mascara, a bit of navy eyeliner, and raspberry flavored frosty lipgloss.
9. Do you prefer shopping for makeup alone or with a buddy? Generally with my mom is the best. She will tell it like it is. A lot of my girlfriends wear a lot more foundation compared to me and try to tell me I need it.
10. Weekly goals: 3 lab reports, problem sets, stay in the shade after getting sunburnt (with sunscreen) at the baseball game yesterday.
Maria says
1. Mood: Draggin booty right about now. I get off work in 30 minutes and then I have all my Mom duties tonight….
2. Your favorite sandwich? A good grilled ham and cheese with not too much ham.
3. What’s your lucky number? 25
4. Something you no longer worry about but did at one time? Settling down. I was married to someone I met in high school and it was a disaster. We had two kids and I tried my best to make it work but it wasn’t going to and after that it haunted me that I’d never be happily married. After almost 10 years, I finally am.
5. When was the last time you rode a roller coaster? June 2010 at California Adventure. I love roller coasters!!

8. How old were you when you started regularly wearing makeup? 16 and I barely wore any, mascara and some blush.
9. Do you prefer shopping for makeup alone or with a buddy? Alone for the same reason. I don’t like to be rushed. I may only take 10 minutes, I might take an hour but I don’t want to worry about anyone’s schedule but my own.
10. Weekly goals: Finish Online traffic school while my boss is out of town for 3 weeks 🙂
Olivia says
1. Mood: Mellow and drowsy
2. Your favorite sandwich? At the moment I like to treat myself to a toasted half sandwich made with one slice of wholemeal seeded bread, a little bit of cheese, a dollop of bbq sauce and at least 3 slices of different hams or chicken. I then toast this in my panini press and eat with a little salad. It feels ridiculously naughty because of how much filling there is, but isn’t actually all that bad for lunch seeing as it’s only one slice of bread. Yummy!
3. What’s your lucky number? 64, which is incredibly inconvenient as it is far too high to be used for things such as the lottery (not that I do that anyway!)
4. Something you no longer worry about but did at one time? I no longer worry about being small in the boob area. I remember starting puberty so late compared to my friends and until now I kept waiting for them to suddenly grow (after being told that they stopped growing at about 21).
I remember reading a teen book about how you didn’t need a bra unless you could put a pencil under your breasts and it would stay there… it never happened for me!
Now I’m just glad that I don’t have to worry about them getting in the way that much.
5. When was the last time you rode a roller coaster?Oh dear… two years ago during the summer I think! My university even sells us half price tickets to the closest one and I haven’t been since I’ve been studying. How awful!
6. What are four things you like about your neighborhood? It’s beautiful, quiet, compact and green!
7. When was the last time you got your hair did? Oh dear… probably about the same as you! I’ve dyed my hair since but it desperately needs a little bit of a trim. I’m scared that my layers are going to all grow out!
8. How old were you when you started regularly wearing makeup?I’m not sure… about 14/15? I didn’t wear much then; that’s for sure. I didn’t even wear foundation until the end of 6th form I think, but I used cover up because I had horrible spots. I am SO glad that I don’t suffer from them anymore.
9. Do you prefer shopping for makeup alone or with a buddy? I feel incredibly awkward doing proper shopping with friends because I am aware that I can take a long time umming and ahhing over everything. Especially make up.
Like most people though, I adore shopping with my mother… even if I don’t always trust her opinion when it comes to what suits me!
10. Weekly goals: I need to finish blog posts, start some uni work, pack my bag for my week away to see my boyfriend and friends and organise the drawers in my desk that are still filled with things that I had when I was 13. How disorganised must I be to still have that stuff?
Linnea says
1. Mood: Happy 😀 The boy gets home tonight, and I’m anxious and so excited to see him. At the same time, I’m completely bummed that my happiness is so hitched on one person, but hey, at least I make him happy as well?
2. Your favorite sandwich? Oh man. Depends on the event, how I feel, etc. Lemme break it down for you: Is it snack time? Breakfast? General gooiness wanted? Banana + PB, I 2nd the bread needing to be soft. Are you feeling a little under the weather because of a night of drinking? BLT, lots of mayo, salt and pepper, no lettuce. Toasted bread. I like most sammiches, but I got to say my #1 deal breaker is having something in the sandwich that you cannot bite through, and you end up dragging the entire thing out of the sandwich, ruining the set-up perfection that makes a sandwich so magical.
3. What’s your lucky number? 5, 9.
4. Something you no longer worry about but did at one time? If I could ever feel completely comfortable committing to ‘the one’ (how do you know? .. so many questions!). Now I know that it just feels right, and you accept that that’s enough for now.
5. When was the last time you rode a roller coaster? Neva! I’m really not a rides person. Lets just say a swing does unnice things to my stomach.
6. What are four things you like about your neighborhood? 1. Its a young neighbourhood, with lots of young families starting out. 2. Lots of park space. 3. Its close to some shopping places. 4. Not too far, but exactly far enough from the family.
7. When was the last time you got your hair did? January (it really needs a trim right now).
8. How old were you when you started regularly wearing makeup? Umm, I’d have to say I was a bit late to the game, probably 16-17, as my mom was a total tomboy, so I had to get the makeup bug from outside the house, so it took a bit longer. I then didn’t wear very much of it unless it was a special occasion. Not until I got out of High School did I become more interested in it.
9. Do you prefer shopping for makeup alone or with a buddy? Alone mostly. Except I would like someone to help me with shades and opinions, but that’s how it goes.
10. Weekly goals: Enjoy the boy coming home! And then get ready for the crazy (way too large) house warming party we’re having on saturday. Also, survive the crazy heat wave that is going through right now.

2. Your favorite sandwich? Egg salad! My favorite of all time!
3. What’s your lucky number? Five. I remember I used to hate the number 5, and I told my Mom on New Year’s 1985 that I was worried that it would be a bad year because of my hatred of the number five. However, it was a great year, and something happened because now it’s my favorite number!
4. Something you no longer worry about but did at one time? 5. When was the last time you rode a roller coaster? In May we went to our town Fair. And my oldest daughter, she’ll be10 next month, and I rode the swings. She was kicking her legs and hooting and hollering, and I was frozen in fear. I thought that if I didn’t move at all, that I would live through that awful experience! I screamed the whole time, my husband told me that the whole county could hear me! It wasn’t a roller coaster, it was much much more terrifying, those swings!
6. What are four things you like about your neighborhood? We’ve only lived in this neighborhood for four months, but it’s quiet, it is easy to walk around, we have a lot of friends that live in this neighborhood, and there is a very active Neighborhood Watch, so I feel very safe here!
7. When was the last time you got your hair did? March. I’m growing it out, so it’ll be a minute before I go back!
8. How old were you when you started regularly wearing makeup? High School, I would wear a bright lip and a neutral eye. Kind of grown up look. It wasn’t a good look, but I loved it at the time!
9. Do you prefer shopping for makeup alone or with a buddy? Alone! Or with my kids. But if I take them, they want everything! Which I like!

5. When was the last time you rode a roller coaster? So long I can’t even remember! But I have height fright and I forced myself to go on the ferris wheel last year, I was scared to death, does that count? (note: I’m not a native English speaker and I thought it was “fairy’s wheel” before!)

7. When was the last time you got your hair did? Early April. I hate going to the hairdresser’s…
8. How old were you when you started regularly wearing makeup? Around 19 I’d say, but it was only mascara and sometimes lipstick

5. When was the last time you rode a roller coaster?: A week or so.
6. What are four things you like about your neighborhood?: 1. Walkability, 2. How many people there are, but I still have my own quiet place, 3. that everything is open all the time regardless, and 4. that I don’t need to know how to drive

8. How old were you when you started regularly wearing makeup?: Like 17 or 18.

–> Tuna.. my god, I love tuna!
3. What’s your lucky number?
–> 6
4. Something you no longer worry about but did at one time?

5. When was the last time you rode a roller coaster?
–> Probably 10-15 years ago. I hate heights and I won’t go on another one!
6. What are four things you like about your neighborhood?

9. Do you prefer shopping for makeup alone or with a buddy?

6. What are four things you like about your neighborhood?
Sidewalks! Safe. Beautifully maintained. Convenient (close to public trans, major highways)
7. When was the last time you got your hair did?

21! I know right! I used to wear eye liner but not really makeup makeup. Once I figured out foundation I was hooked. And I love eye shadows.
9. Do you prefer shopping for makeup alone or with a buddy?
Dude Karen I would totally shop endlessly looking at makeup with you! I prefer to shop alone because I realized everyone has different shopping habits. I don’t mind going with friends from time to time but usually I go alone.
10. Weekly goals:
Remember that it’s my home, and I’m the adult. “Be kinder than I feel.” Think and ask myself if it’s worth the effort.
