Me and my younger brother
- You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
Splendiferous! Phantasmagorical, actually. 🙂 I had such a nice birthday weekend. Best one in years, and now I’m just going to try to milk those good vibes for as long as possible this week. - Did you ever go through an awkward phase?
You mean other than the one I’m in now, LOL?! Every day feels awkward in its own special way.But seriously, image-wise, my years 9 through 12 were particularly challenging. I had Richard Marx hair, none of my clothes fit me correctly, and I hadn’t yet figured out my place in my school’s social pecking order.
I was also very, very shy, and that made things…difficult.
- Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover?
LOL! Oh, yeah. Absolutely. I used to do it all the time when I was a kid. I’d go to the library and borrow a stack of books with the coolest/prettiest covers.Funny thing is, I actually found some great reads that way! Like The Nasty Alexander, which had a beautiful bright red cover.
It was about a very naughty child who kept getting into trouble, which gave me an idea…
At the time I read it, my mom was pregnant with my younger brother, and she and my dad still hadn’t decided on his name. I remember handing her the book and asking her to read it to me, and how she paused when she read the title, “Alexander,” which later became my brother’s name. 🙂
Nowadays, I’m most attracted to book covers with interesting typography (and repelled by book covers that feature my nemesis font, Comic Sans).
- Boots with shorts in summer? Yay or a nay?
A lot of gals around town here have been rockin’ the look lately. I think it’s kinda cute, so yay. - Who was the last person you had coffee with?
Hmm… Tabs only drinks decaf, so I guess it would be my friends Jen and Cindy two weeks ago. - Where did you grow up?
I spent my childhood and teenage years in a town about 40 miles east of here called Union City, which is about 20 miles or so from Oakland. It’s grown since then, but it was a pretty small town when I was growing up, and I lived a very sheltered life.
I was happy, though. I just don’t think it really prepared me for life outside the nest.
Moving away to college in Davis about 150 miles north was probably where I did most of my growing up. There, and the few years I lived in San Francisco in my early 20s.
Those were difficult years…but I feel like I learned a lot about myself.
- Have you ever used the words, “broseph” or “bromance,” in a serious sentence?
Broseph, no. But bromance? Yes. I’m also guilty of using an offshoot of the word, “bromantical.” LOL! - Did you ever own a Walkman (CD or cassette)?
No, but I remember my friend having one and thinking how lucky she was to always have music at her fingertips! - Which of the True Blood characters would you most like to hang out with?
Lafayette (who tweeted me once in real life! — err, well, the actor who plays Lafayette). I have a feeling we’d be able to talk about smudgy eyeliner and nail polish for days. - Weekly goals:
Just to keep smilin’. 🙂 Oh, ya know, and to get all of my work done.
Good morning and happy Monday, my friend. Brace yourself for 20 pounds of virtual kitty hugs. Tabs would like to climb up on your lap, if you’re so inclined, so please make space on your right shoulder (always has to be the right shoulder), so that he may rest his heft upon thou unimpeded.
There. Now you can’t move until you finish today’s Monday Poll. 😉
Good job, Tabs. Good job.
- To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

Stef Smith says
1. Mood: Today is my birthday, the big 37! So yay!
2. Did you ever go through an awkward phase? Yes! Fifth grade, not a cute year, round glasses, short funny hair, and a terrible overbite. My daughter is going into the 5th grade in August and she is so pretty! I’m thankful! Also, freshman year was bad, I was going through some odd heath things and had to be on medication that didn’t do me any favors. Luckily I grew out of those stages!
3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover? I’m sure I have, I just can’t remember off the top of my head.

Katie says
1. Mood: I feel awake and good. It helps that I had a nice weekend seeing Prometheus (btw, stay for The Fassbender, leave because of the convoluted storyline) and getting out of the house.
2. Did you ever go through an awkward phase? I’m 20, so, yeah, I’m still in a bit of an awkward phase! Although, it’s not nearly as awkward as my early middle school years. I wore awkward glasses, made questionable clothing choices, and had a geeky, puffy & short-kind of figure (dunno if that makes sense, LOL).
3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover? I choose books that come with good recommendations for my to-read list, but I still judge a book by its cover sometimes! My eyes are going to wander to the pretty things first! I think publishers have caught on to this because, as I’ve noticed while frequenting the bookstore, covers seem so much more elaborate and eye-catching nowadays.
4. Boots with shorts in summer: yay or nay? I occasionally do this! Especially with my cowboy boots.
5. Who was the last person you had coffee with? I don’t drink coffee, but the last person I went out for “drinks” with (read: boba, LOL) was with a housemate a month ago. Oh gosh, I haven’t gone out in a while…

8. Did you ever own a Walkman (CD or cassette)? Nope! I belong to the MP3 generation!
9. Which of the True Blood characters would you most like to hang out with? I don’t watch True Blood, but real-life Alexander Skarsgaard wouldn’t be too shabby to hang out with, if you know what I mean…
10. Weekly goals: Update my blog, run at least twelve miles, play the piano, get some leisure reading done!
Have a lovely week, everyone!
Nina says
1. Mood: A lil bit harassed – so busy at work!

3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover? LOL, yes. Not usually the best way to judge a book.
4. Boots with shorts in summer: yay or nay? It’s a NAY. Its so hot here that boots might make my feet fall off. The heat index today is 100F!
5. Who was the last person you had coffee with? The Hubs, last Saturday morning. I got us some Dunkin’ Donuts coffee – yum!
6. Where did you grow up? All over the world!

6. Where did you grow up? Here in the Gironde, a sunny, rainy, windy but beautiful region !
7. Have you ever used the words, “broseph†or “bromance,†in a sentence? No, I don’t know what it means actually

Melissa says
1. Mood: Conflicted! Just got in from a bike ride, but my favorite tennis player lost in the French Open final 🙁
2. Did you ever go through an awkward phase?: Yeah. We all have I’m sure.
3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover?: Yes.
4. Boots with shorts in summer: yay or nay?: Nay. If done right it could look cute, but more often then not it isn’t.
5. Who was the last person you had coffee with?: Myself. I can’t really remember.
6. Where did you grow up?: The Bronx.
7. Have you ever used the words, “broseph†or “bromance,†in a sentence?: Haha never. Makes me think of Paul Rudd.
8. Did you ever own a Walkman (CD or cassette)?: Yes. Lots of them! Probably 3 cassette and 4 or so CD ones. The CD walkmen always broke quicker than the cassette ones.
9. Which of the True Blood characters would you most like to hang out with?: I have to admit, I’ve never seen an episode so I’m not sure.
10. Weekly goals: get my offsite practicum set up
Have a great week, everyone!
Karen says
Hi Melissa,
Aww, bummer. Who’s your favorite tennis player?
TrippyPixie says
1. Mood: Bored, relaxed…that’s what I love about summer vacation.
2. Did you ever go through an awkward phase?: You bet. I’m just beginning to come out of that phase.
3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover?: Definitely.
4. Boots with shorts in summer: yay or nay?: Nay! It looks like somebody can’t decide if they want to dress for hot or cold weather. I live in Chicago, where our winters are nasty, so I get mad every time somebody wears this look. People complain enough about wearing boots during winter, so why would you wear a pair in summer? Free your feet!
5. Who was the last person you had coffee with?: I don’t like coffee, and I normally meet up with people at other places. But I did have a gift card from Starbucks, so I bought a frappucino for myself a while ago.
6. Where did you grow up?: Chicago, born and raised, and I plan on staying here! I just hate our winters, but surviving them makes me feel tougher. XD
7. Have you ever used the words, “broseph†or “bromance,†in a sentence?: “Bromance”, but only a few times. I’m not a big fan of either word.
8. Did you ever own a Walkman (CD or cassette)?: CD player, and I remember that it was one of the coolest things ever.
9. Which of the True Blood characters would you most like to hang out with?: Don’t watch that show.
10. Weekly goals: Clean out my closet and donate clothes to charity, and clean up my bedroom.
Karen says
Hi TrippyPixie,
How are you enjoying your vacation? Doing anything fun on your time off?
Stephanie says
1. Mood:
Lethargic (still working on new work opportunities!)
2. Did you ever go through an awkward phase?
Absolutely! I was a tomboy when I was little and transitioning the girlier girl that I am was not pleasant! (still pretty tomboy-ish since I’m an engineer in a heavily male-dominated field, but at least I still look feminine!)
3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover?
Memoirs of a Geisha The cover before it was turned in to a movie was a geisha and the look on her face kind of made it look like she had some secrets and lots to say. Definitely an enjoyable read and the imagery was very well done.
4. Boots with shorts in summer: yay or nay?
Nay? It’s summer after all-break out the flip flops!
5. Who was the last person you had coffee with?
Me, myself, and I? Haha, probably my friend Bri.
6. Where did you grow up?
In the wild of the mid-west.
7. Have you ever used the words, “broseph†or “bromance,†in a sentence?
Bromance for sure!
8. Did you ever own a Walkman (CD or cassette)?
Nope! Consumer Reports always told my parents that the Walkman brand wasn’t the best value for your money. So I did have other portable CD players, just not that brand.
9. Which of the True Blood characters would you most like to hang out with?
Pam or Lafayette: Pam just amuses me and Lafayette needs no explanation.
10. Weekly goals:
Apply to at least 3 or 4 more jobs, score at least one interview, and not let work take over my life!
Stephanie says
Oh, one more goal: get my post about my makeover w/ Mikey Castillo of Le Metier de Beaute up (would be the first post in almost a year!).
Kim says
Hello, Birthday Girl! I’m glad you had a great weekend. 🙂
1. Mood: Good but it’s Monday so I’m tired as usual. This would have been a great time for a 3 day weekend.
2. Did you ever go through an awkward phase? I think probably in 6th grade when I was about a foot taller than everyone and starting to go through that awful puberty phase.
3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover? Nothing is coming to mind, but I’m sure I have. Well, maybe the cover and the summary on the back or inner flap.
4. Boots with shorts in summer: yay or nay? No, not for me. I find them to be too clunky for warm weather. I like the look, though.
5. Who was the last person you had coffee with? If you substitute drinks for coffee, that would be 3 of my good friends (with our husbands and children at one of my friends’ camps on the lake) yesterday. I almost never go out for actual coffee so that would have to be sometime in March while planning my Italy trip.
6. Where did you grow up? In upstate NY, on the borders of Vermont and Canada. As we like to call it, “the sticks”. That’s said with affection and appreciation. 🙂
7. Have you ever used the words, “broseph†or “bromance,†in a sentence? I have never used either of those words. I’m not sure I’ve used any word beginning with “bro”. Maybe Bromine, when forced in Chemistry. 😉
8. Did you ever own a Walkman (CD or cassette)? As usual, you are timely. I just threw out an old cassette walkman that the boys had been using for old books on tape. It was right next to the CD walkman that I vividly remember running with, because it skipped non-stop and was quite a handful. I’m so grateful for iPods. 🙂
9. Which of the True Blood characters would you most like to hang out with? Oh, my. Eric, of course. I realize that just means looking at him for a few minutes before he drains me, but this is only a hypothetical exercise so I don’t worry about those consequences.
10. Weekly goals: Try to exercise (vigorously) and get a lot of sleep every day. I have a very long and sleep-deprived weekend coming up and I’m getting too old to bounce back!
Katherine G says
1. Mood:
~Happy with myself for doing a tough workout, but really itchy from getting poison ivy on my wrists and stomach from helping out with my brother-in-law’s uncle’s farm.
2. Did you ever go through an awkward phase?
~Oh heck yes! From 11 to about 18…in middle school I had big purple wire framed glasses (they looked kind of like dorky aviators), braces, and I never wore anything cute. I always had my hair in a ponytail (and not a cute ponytail either, parted down the middle and fastened tight and low), and I was definitely socially awkward because I was into horses and not boys or fashion. Still into the horses, but my more fashionable side didn’t come out until a few years ago.
3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover?
~Sometimes. I’ve gone a lot by title name and whether that appeals to me.
4. Boots with shorts in summer: yay or nay?
~I think that cowboy boots are really cute with short shorts.
5. Who was the last person you had coffee with?
~Probably the hubby, we have it for breaky sometimes.
6. Where did you grow up?
~Born in Washington, DC, lived in Wheaton, MD for the first year of my life, then lived in Olney, MD (a suburb of Montgomery County that I describe as “kind of in the middle of everything.” It’s 45 minutes from Baltimore, 45 minutes from DC and exactly 20 minutes from every other major area nearby – Columbia, Rockville, Germantown, Bethesda…) up until now. I am in the process of slowly moving in with the fiance in Frederick, MD.
7. Have you ever used the words, “broseph†or “bromance,†in a sentence?
~No, but I’ve heard “bromance” used plenty of times!
8. Did you ever own a Walkman (CD or cassette)?
~Yes, I had both as a kid. CD Walkmans were a big thing in high school, Ipods had come out around my senior year.
9. Which of the True Blood characters would you most like to hang out with?
~Hmm..not sure, haven’t gotten into True Blood. My mom watches it but I don’t have HBO anymore so I’ve missed the whole series. Mom watches it on DVD so I guess I will have to borrow it from her sometime.
10. Weekly goals:
~Get rid of the poison ivy one way or another.
~Do difficult and challenging workouts every day this week.
~Run every day this week.
~Drink protein shakes or eat an egg after each workout so that my muscles can be built strong.
~Stay positive and stay happy!

1. Mood: Good! 🙂 Work is over, I had a wee lie down and now I feel ready for… Jillian Michaels!
2. Did you ever go through an awkward phase? I’ve probably never had an un-awkward phase hah! I can’t exactly say when though, I think I stopped (sort of) feeling awkward when I started not caring as much about what people thought. Oh and I was painfully shy, but moving to another country helped a LOT with that.
3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover? No exaples in mind, but I’m sure I have!
4. Boots with shorts in summer: yay or nay? I thought nay until I went to Texas and saw fierce ladies rocking the look. So, yay!
5. Who was the last person you had coffee with? Eep I can’t even remember!
6. Where did you grow up? In the south of France, a small place called Nîmes.
7. Have you ever used the words, “broseph†or “bromance,†in a sentence? Yes to “bromance”.
8. Did you ever own a Walkman (CD or cassette)? I did in junior school and I loved it so much! I used it all the way to university, and was all sad to give it away a few years ago when it became clear I wouldn’t use it again.
9. Which of the True Blood characters would you most like to hang out with? Why, Lafayette of course! He’s the best part of the show, and I’m all giddy he tweeted you, Karen! Also, Dude’s makeup is awesome.
10. Weekly goals: Jillian Michaels every day, mind my food portions, read 2 books and spend less time watching Chuck (I’m rediscovering the DVDs). Oh, and figure out how the hell to digitally edit photos to fix light issues, argh!
Karen, if you have a few minutes could you give me some info on how you applied eyeshadow in this post please? https://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/daily-beauty-cat/nars-calanque-eyeshadow-trio/ It’s one of my favourite palettes but I can never get it *quite* right (uh, also that crazy fallout from the first shadow doesn’t help).
Happy Monday! 🙂

LEAH says
1. Mood: Peppy actually, my birthday is on Wednesday and I have the whole week off so it’s very refreshing. Yay Gemini birthdays!
2. Did you ever go through an awkward phase? Yesh, I would say 4/5th grade were particularly strange because the late 90’s were terrible for fashion. Jeans that went over the shoes and those stretchy choker necklaces, blech. Also, I developed hips and chest in 7th grade so I suddenly had some unwarranted male attention.
3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover? If you have to cry, go outside is Kelly Catrone’s memoir that I bought on a whim but is really very insightful and a fun read.
4. Boots with shorts in summer: yay or nay? As long as the boots are just below the knee and the shorts are tasteful, I vote yay.
5. Who was the last person you had coffee with? The bf this morning. He woke me up with a Starbucks, I’m very lucky.
6. Where did you grow up? I was born in the Netherlands but grew up near Seattle. I think it’s a great place to grow up.
7. Have you ever used the words, “broseph†or “bromance,†in a sentence? Haha, yes to both. Broseph I generally use as an insult though.
8. Did you ever own a Walkman (CD or cassette)? Heck yes! My parents gave me a walkman and the Spice Girls cassette one year for a birthday present!
9. Which of the True Blood characters would you most like to hang out with? Definitely Pam, I love how unexpectedly feisty she is. Killin fools while wearing pink lipstick.
10. Weekly goals: Watch my sister graduate high school and celebrate my birthday!
Ruchita says
Le List
1. Mood:
Status quo for Monday.
2. Did you ever go through an awkward phase?
All of my middle school years. Bad hair, horrible clothes. I partly blame it on the fact that it was the late 80s.
3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover?
I don’t think so, but I will pick up a book and look through it if the cover is interesting. If it sounds promising after reading the jacket, then I’ll hold on to it.
4. Boots with shorts in summer: yay or nay?
Probably not the look for me, but I think some fashion forward ladies can rock the look. So yay.
5. Who was the last person you had coffee with?
My parents. It was a couple of weeks ago when we were in Boston.
6. Where did you grow up?
I was born in New Delhi and we lived in Wyoming and Utah until we moved to Ohio in the 4th grade. I’ve lived here since then (in the suburbs of Columbus) and went to college at Ohio State. I actually work on the same town where I grew up and it’s changed a lot over the years.
7. Have you ever used the words, “broseph†or “bromance,†in a sentence?
Nope!
8. Did you ever own a Walkman (CD or cassette)?
Yes, a cassette Walkman! And I’m old enough to remember when there were Beta and VHS tapes. 🙂
9. Which of the True Blood characters would you most like to hang out with?
It would be fun to go shopping with Pam.
10. Weekly goals:
Clean off the pile of papers, receipts, etc on my desk at home. Try to work out 3 times week.
Yay for kitty hugs. They always make the day better. A little kitty anecdote – Nina likes to sit in the kitchen and oversee the meal preparation. She is rather vocal about it and I swear she sounds just like one of those baby dragons on Game of Thrones. Luckily there’s no fire breathing 🙂 Have a great Monday!

2. Did you ever go through an awkward phase?
Oh, definitely. Jr High, I’d say. I sill consider 6th grade one of my golden years, and I managed to get through 7th & 8th without too much damage, but pictures from that era (and 9th grade, too) are just a little painful. Egh. Fashion sense came later for me.
3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover?
Yup! Only once or twice, though. Of the ones I can remember, I haven’t been particularly impressed.
4. Boots with shorts in summer: yay or nay?
Depends on the shorts, the boots, and the weather. I can definitely see it working, though. In the PNW, it kinda makes sense because the weather’s so changeable! 🙂 haha.
5. Who was the last person you had coffee with?
My friend Emily!
6. Where did you grow up?
In ghetto South Tacoma, WA. I’ve really sentimentalized Tacoma – I talk about how I miss it and my husband is horrified, haha!
7. Have you ever used the words, “broseph†or “bromance,†in a sentence?
Oh yes. More bromance. I use other forms of bro- too, like “brotastic” or “brohemian” and some other iterations… they’re kind of situational words, though 🙂
8. Did you ever own a Walkman (CD or cassette)?
I think I did! Back in the days before MP3 players were widely used.
9. Which of the True Blood characters would you most like to hang out with?
Ach – don’t watch it. I should get on that!
10. Weekly goals:
To keep calm and happy and to give hugs to the people I love. I’m helping to coordinate my sister’s bridal shower, which is taking place on Saturday. I’m super stoked because I’ll be back in WA and will get to see family, but there are definitely some details that need to be worked out for the shower… not to mention figuring out how to squeeze in time with friends. I’m more excited than anything, though!

1. Mood: Pretty good. It’s the beginning of a new week. I can start all over : )
2. Did you ever go through an awkward phase? I’m going through one right now. I’m getting old but I don’t feel old. I don’t want to dress old but young fashions look wrong on my body. 8. Did you ever own a Walkman (CD or cassette)? Sure did, I even had the fancy cassette one that reversed sides automatically.
9. Which of the True Blood characters would you most like to hang out with? Not Sookie, I don’t want her to read my mind. If we’re talking about the TV show then Lafayette, but if we’re going off the books – Bill Compton. (I’m still trying to resolve all the differences between the show and books. I really like both, but I find myself getting a little confused trying to keep the story lines straight)

2. Did you ever go through an awkward phase? Yes, around 4th grade, I guess… I wanted to be one of the cool kids but I was always the nerd :-P.
3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover? Most definitely! I like a book with a good cover. I love Everything is Illuminated. The other way around, I might won’t pick up a book with a bad cover.
4. Boots with shorts in summer: yay or nay? I don’t think it looks bad… I just can’t imagine the sweating o.O. Besides, living in a cold northern hemisphere I’m always too eager to get rid of my boots when summer comes :-p.

1. Mood:

2. Did you ever go through an awkward phase?
Not really, but I only did in kindergarden, I guess that’s why I only attended it for 2 days,
if that counts.
3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover?
I do it all the time, especially when I order something from the internet. But I’m disappointed
when the cover isn’t the same as on the pic in the webpage. But I have some pretty
great covers home, even though the ones that are plain may be even better to read
than some who have only a great cover. Don’t judge a book by its cover lol.
4. Boots with shorts in summer: yay or nay?
Never done it, but probably would like to try it, since I have a photoshoot during the
summer and the setting is at a ranch, with horses and all of our clothes resemble
cowboys, it would be a nice idea to try that one out.
5. Who was the last person you had coffee with?
My friends, when we finished our classes in college, we went to a nice coffee shop near
and ordered cupcakes with coffee 😉
6. Where did you grow up?
I grew up in the capital of my homecountry, Kosovo. The capital is called Prishtina. If you
don’t know where Kosovo is located, it’s in the middle of Balkans, or east Europe. It’s
a very nice place, with a lot of traditions and culture. My country just declared independence
4 years ago, so this makes up the youngest country in the world, but with the oldest history.
7. Have you ever used the words, “broseph†or “bromance,†in a sentence?
Yeah bromance for sure, don’t think I ever used broseph, though.

the internet.

Don’t really watch that show!
10. Weekly goals:
Study hard, have fun during the weekend, concentrate on the most important things
in life, and plan my summer vacation and road trips lol! xoxo

1. Mood:

– You bet. Braces, bad curled bangs, turquoise glasses with purple paint spatters (don’t ask…. my taste has come a LONG way since then).
3. Have you ever read a book based solely on its cover?
– Yes. Now I have a kindle though so I never even see the covers. Sometimes I’ll go to the bookstore just to see the covers and then order them on my Kindle.
4. Boots with shorts in summer: yay or nay?
– Hmmm. This is tough. Are they tall boots? Shbooties? I think I’m going to say no.
5. Who was the last person you had coffee with?
– Technically myself but before that probably Hubby during a weekend breakfast.
6. Where did you grow up?
– I was born in Maryland but grew up in Lafayette, IN. Purdue University is there so at least we had more to do than a most small farm towns. No, I never went cow tipping.
7. Have you ever used the words, “broseph†or “bromance,†in a sentence?
– I’m sure I’ve said bromance before but most likely in a mocking way.
8. Did you ever own a Walkman (CD or cassette)?
– Yes. At the time it was the best birthday gift ever. I listened to Paula Abdul cassettes as well as some I made from the radio. I think there was a Beach Boys cassette as well When I got my CD player I was all about Mariah Carey, Ace of Base and Amy Grant. I was cool.
9. Which of the True Blood characters would you most like to hang out with?
– Alcide. I would just stare at him for hours.
10. Weekly goals:
– Get to the gym 5 times this week and post one blog entry each day.
