Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 222

Published in: Just For Fun

the makeup and beauty blog monday poll

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
Maybe it’s because the tea hasn’t quite kicked yet, but I’m feeling really mellow. I wanted to get a lot done today, but I think a chill day might be in order.
  2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why?
I’d go with the poncho, ya know, for practical reasons. Maybe I could use it as a blanket or a table cloth in an emergency.

And I have a feeling the furry purple vest would make me look/feel like a Muppet.

  3. How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door?
Pretend it’s late in the day. You’ve removed your makeup, your contacts, warmed up a Lean Cuisine, and now you’re sitting on the couch in stretchy pants and watching reruns of [INSERT YOUR FAVORITE SYNDICATED TV SHOW].

Just then, the phone rings. It’s your friend, calling with a last-minute invite to a fancy dinner soiree, and it’s an offer you simply can’t refuse.

How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door? For me, about 20 minutes — but only if I’m having a decent hair day, and I pick an outfit that doesn’t need to be ironed.

  4. How many hours of sleep do you get each night?
During the week, about 7. I usually climb in bed around 10:30 and read until I get sleepy, usually around 11. On weekends, I like to sleep in, so maybe 8-10 hours of sleep (sometimes 12 if I’m really lucky and Tabs is feeling generous).
  5. Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy?
Okay, sweetie, if you’re reading this, you know I love you, but how do you manage to always step on my feet or kick my legs whenever we sit across from each other at a table (and I know you’re not getting fresh with me)?

It’s like preordained! Every. Single. Time. The worst is when I’m wearing sandals.

  6. Have you ever battled someone on the dance floor?
Oh, yes. More than once. :)
  7. What’s the last book you finished?
Tina Fey’s Bossypants, and I LOL’d about a hundred times reading it, too. Highly recommended!
  8. What’s the plan for today?
Today is a holiday called Memorial Day here in the U.S., so many of my compatriots have the day off from work. I really wanted to go to the pool in our condo complex (it finally opened for the summer, yay!), but it’s overcast and chilly outside, so that’s not gonna happen.

If I finish the tasks Tabs put on my to-do list, I might try to go to a movie. We’ll see… There’s really not a lot in theaters that I still want to see, but next week things start getting good. First, Snow White and the Huntsman comes out, and then Prometheus the week after that.

  9. What were your favorite TV shows when you were a kid?
Both of my parents worked long hours, so they were always pretty tired when they got home. Consequently, my brother and I spent a lot of time with our defacto babysitter/primary means of entertainment, Mr. TV.

That thing was practically on 24/7! I watched a lot of Punky Brewster, Silver Spoons (I had the biggest crush on Ricky Schroder), The Cosby Show, Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters, Double Trouble, Mr. Belvedere, Who’s the Boss (“Ahn-juh-luhr!”), The Golden Girls, The Love Boat

Yeah, I watched a lot of TV.

  10. Weekly goals:
Just one this week. I gotta get back to exercising regularly. Ever since I started getting up earlier in the day, I’ve been getting more blogging and other stuff done, but my workouts have been suffering. I’ve been telling myself/trying to exercise in the late afternoon, but I’m usually pretty tired by then.

Years ago I would always exercise in the evenings, but now it’s like pulling teeth. I don’t know… I’ve done it before, so I can do it again.

Howdy, friend. :) Happy Memorial Day.

What have you been up to? Any picnics or parties this weekend? Our little circle had its annual Memorial Day cookout yesterday, but El Hub and I drove up to Napa for the day, so we missed it.

Napa was a lot of fun, though. I’ll put up some pics in a few.

But first, the Monday Poll.

If you had to work today, I hope it’s a good one, whether that means it’s busy or slow. If, on the other hand, you had the day off, well, enjoy it. Do something fun. Downtime is very important.

If you decided to fill out the poll, tell me how things are going at the bottom of your comment.

Talk to you soon.

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

    1. Mood: Tired, the heat lately has been zapping me. I don’t do well in high heat and high humidity.

    2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why? The faux fur. Purple is my favorite color, and if it is soft enough I’ll go around petting it all day.

    3. How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door? To do my errands, it’s long enough for me to put on a bra and real pants and pull my hair back. If I actually want to look well, probably about a half hour.

    4. How many hours of sleep do you get each night? A lot. I’m a total sloth. I slept like 12 hours two nights ago and then later took a nap for like 2 hours that afternoon.

    5. Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy? He likes to pick me up and do pro wrestling moves on our bed. We had to buy a new box spring for our old bed because of those power bombs.

    6. Have you ever battled someone on the dance floor? Nope.

    2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why?
I’d probably go with the poncho. Because… the idea of a fur vest is just scarier.
    3. How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door?
If it’s getting up in the morning…. I could do it in about 20 minutes, I think. Providing I have dry shampoo on hand and just do tinted moisturizer and mascara.
    4. How many hours of sleep do you get each night?
Usually about 7 during the work week. I thrive on 9 hours a night, though. Very sadly. That’s just too much sleeping, if you ask me.
    5. Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy?
Not really. Nothing that just drives me batty. I mean, he has his quirks, and sometimes they irk me (and certain times it’s worse than others), but then I remember that I love him because he’s the awesome person that he is, which includes the silly habits and characteristics he has :) It helps, especially on potentially grumpy days.
    6. Have you ever battled someone on the dance floor?
Don’t think so. I’ve been witness to a battle or two, and I don’t think I have the skillz, yo.

Kate Beaton’s Hark! A Vagrant, if comics count :) I freakin LOVE Kate Beaton.

    9. What were your favorite TV shows when you were a kid?

I’d need at least 15mins to look presentable. Hair, outfit and minimal makeup eyeliner, lipstick, cheeks!

    5. Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy? Ha! I’ve been married for almost 16 years, everything he does drives me crazy! ha ha ha But it’s little things, wrapped up in nice things. For example, when he unloads the dishwasher, he puts things in the wrong spots. It’s so nice that he does the dishes though, so I can’t really complain. He also doesn’t rinse out the sink when he shaves, he leaves that for me, not a big fan of that! :)

    6. Have you ever battled someone on the dance floor? Not yet!

    7. What’s the last book you finished? “The Silent Girl” by Tess Gerritsen, it was the last of the Rizzoli and Isles novels that are available. I love the show, so I read the books. WIN!

    9. What were your favorite TV shows when you were a kid? We lived on a 40 acre farm with 12 dogs and bikes, we didn’t watch a lot of tv. How was your bike ride? Did you see anything neat?

      • Nina says:

We ride around this LONGGG trail that spans most of our neighborhood and then some. There are a lot of gorgeous houses (think really well maintained 1950s-1970s houses, my particular favorite), so while I was coasting along the trail, I was also gawking at the pretty houses! :-)

Boys do like bath soap/body wash – which is a relief, right? But dish soap – even yummy smelling ones like the mint Method im currently using, scares them silly! :-D

      Hi Britney!

It’s been a while! What have you been up to?

      • Britney says:

Hugz Karen.. I have no idea how you can reply to so many people and remember them. You are crazy cool…LOL. There has actually been a whole lot going on in my life. I am sure you could just imagine. Finally taking steps towards living my life as me, the real me. It is going to be such a difficult road ahead. Just trying to prepre for it… Scared inside, but is so necessary that I come to terms and realize that I too can be happy. It is just painful sometimes that there are others out there that don’t want to understand what many of us go thru and scorn, look down and humiliate… Sorry, emotions a bit crazy… Hugz to you and Totally love your blog…

  16. jen. says:

    1. Mood: Pretty good… it’s the first Monday of summer vacation, so things can’t be too bad.
    2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why? I’d have to pick the faux fur purple vest. If I wore the poncho, people might think I made it (I’m a knitter), and I can’t have that!
    3. How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door? 20- 25 minutes, depending on how presentable I have to be.
    4. How many hours of sleep do you get each night? during the work week, usually 6-7.
    5. Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy? He loses everything… EVERYTHING. Like, he brought over nice clothes to wear for a dinner out and when he got changed here, he had lost his socks between his place and mine. [yes, we went out for a fancy dinner with him in dress shoes with no socks. I have to just not think about it because it seriously makes me crazy.]
    6. Have you ever battled someone on the dance floor? Ha! No, and if I did, I would soooooo lose.
    7. What’s the last book you finished? I finished The Power of Habit, which was pretty interesting. I didn’t like Bossypants all that much, which is weird because I LOVE Tina Fey. You should try Mindy Kaling’s book. It was pretty fun and along kinda the same lines.
    8. What’s the plan for today? I’m going to make bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers and some wee Brie-and-fig-jam bites, and head over to a party with some people from work.

    2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why? Neither, but if I had to chose I’d take the fur vest, because I already have a leopard print fake fur jacket :-)
    3. How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door? 10 minutes incl styling gel in the hair if it is a bad hair day
    4. How many hours of sleep do you get each night? 6-7 must do it.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Yogirl,

So jealous! I haven’t been to yoga in months and I feel it in my hamstrings. Are you going to go to another class this week?

      • Yogirl says:

I still feel my hamstrings :-) but no other class this week, maybe I have time for a podcast class, though it is not the same energy :-)

  19. Sadie says:

    1. Mood:
Hexhausted. We’re having a crazy heatwave here in London and it’s tuckered me right out.

    2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why?
Ugh, they both sound so warm in today’s weather… can I just lie on the poncho with all the windows open to cool down?

    3. How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door?
If I’m being slow at home, over a hour. If I’ve made it to the gym before work I can be out of the shower, dressed, made up and partially blow-dried within 30 mins.

    4. How many hours of sleep do you get each night?
I wish I could say it was an average, steady amount, but depending on whether the other half is watching a film, or if the local foxes are being rowdy, or if the 3-legged cat jumps on my head at 4am…it can be anything from 5 – 7 hours. It’s never enough :(

    5. Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy?
See above comment about watching films when I’m trying to sleep…

    6. Have you ever battled someone on the dance floor?
Only myself in the mirrored wall after a few too many cocktails!

    9. What were your favorite TV shows when you were a kid?
The Muppet Show (reruns of course, I’m not THAT old), The Wombles and HartBeat (a lovely art show for kids in the UK presented by a fluffy old man called Tony Hart. We all wanted him to be our uncle)

    10. Weekly goals:
To beat the heat and somehow manage to stay focused at work through it.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Sadie,

I’m so excited for your trip! What are your must-have stops so far?

P.S. Eek, I was around for the ORIGINAL Muppet Show and not the re-runs!

      • Sadie says:

Me too! Am going for a month, with my boyfriend, and we plan to start at Perth & finish in Sydney, with a lot of exploring in between. Apart from the usual stuff like Ayer’s Rock, the Great Ocean Road – it’s still fairly fluid at the moment. We’ve both highlighted what we want to see/do in the book so now we just have to work out a route & compromise on what we can acheive and agree on in the time we have there. My priority really is Sydney though, as my best friend moved there last year and I miss her heaps! Have you been to Oz? Any tips?

I didn’t miss the original Muppets by that much – only 3 or 4 years! And I now have all the DVD boxsets so I feel like I was around then anyway… ;)

  20. Chelsea says:

    1. Mood: good! Just got back from a barbecue/pool party at a cousin’s house!

    2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why? Um, purple faux fur. I like purple

    4. How many hours of sleep do you get each night? I need at least 7 to be functional, 9 is better. On Saturday I get more like 12 :p

    5. Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy? He sneaks up behind me to scare me all the time, and then tells me to relax when I scream loudly in response!

    6. Have you ever battled someone on the dance floor? I wish!

    7. What’s the last book you finished? One of the Sookie Stackhouse books.

    8. What’s the plan for today? I went to a barbecue/pool party with family, and that was fun. I have to put together the program for a conference that’s taking place at my university, because it needs to go to the printer tomorrow!

    9. What were your favorite TV shows when you were a kid? Rugrats was my favorite, but I also like Eureka’s Castle a lot.

    10. Weekly goals: Homework, at least 4 workouts (I’ve already done one this week!), getting ready for academic conference season.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Chelsea,

Haha, El Hub does the same thing! I’m still hoping he grows out of the phase, sigh.

How was the pool party? Did you rock any waterproof makeup?

      • Chelsea says:

I didn’t put more than my feet in! I was wearing a big sun hat, sunglasses, and a long sleeve shirt (over sunscreened arms). I mostly sat and played with my new 9 week old baby cousin, Dominic, who is adorable.

I was wearing Black-Blue CoverGirl LashBlast 24 Hour mascara though, which is intense. I forgot to take it off before a bath once, and even splashing my face it was still going strong.

  21. Kate & Zena says:

    1. Mood:
A little bit excited/tired (don’t know if that’s a mood.) Tired because my migraine is gone, but excited because the warm weather stayed for Memorial Day! That NEVER HAPPENS HERE!

    2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why?
Poncho, only because I’m sure it would look more flattering than the purple vest.

    3. How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door?
30 minutes, with makeup. 15, without and all my makeup in a bag to put it on in the car!

    4. How many hours of sleep do you get each night?
    8-12.

    5. Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy?
I don’t have a significant other, unless you count Zena. If you want to count Zena, it’s the fact she can steal 3/4ths of my bed and she’s not that long!

    6. Have you ever battled someone on the dance floor?
    No.

    7. What’s the last book you finished?

There’s another one, but I keep forgetting the name and it’s driving me nuts!

    10. Weekly goals:
    Walk Zena daily, weather permitting.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Kate,

Zena counts as a significant other. ;)

      • Kate & Zena says:

Considering how many hours I have to put up with her, I would hope so.

I groomed her today (groomed meaning brushed), and I had the sad realization that grey hair was actually staying in her black fur and not brushing out like normal! My puppy is going grey, Karen! Grey!

  22. Tekoa says:

    1.Mood: Nervous/excited. I have a job interview tomorrow and I hope I’m convincing

2.If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why?
    Poncho. I’m sure I can turn it into a hippy-chic inspired outfit….somehow….

This is assuming I’m already dressed and fed, 20 min.

4.How many hours of sleep do you get each night? 8 usually, 10 if cats jump on my chest in the morning and start purring. Sometimes they nest in temporal series sequence. One rests for a while, leaps off and the next starts her parking turn.

5.Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy?
How is it you can cook less than five supper dishes after almost three decades of life? And I’m being generous by including “Heating a can of Alphagetti” as cooking.

Can’t say I have. But if I tried, I would loose

7.What’s the last book you finished?
    Shadowbred by Paul Kemp

    8.What’s the plan for today?

9.What were your favorite TV shows when you were a kid?
Anything that involved a dinosaur documentry

10.Weekly goals: Aquire full time job and become a successful, independant adult. Apparently the two are connected.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Tekoa,

Good luck on the interview! I will rub Tabs’ tummy for good luck.

What makeup do you plan to wear?

      • Tekoa says:

        MAC Pink Cult blush
        MAC Modesty lipstick
On the eyes MAC Creamy Bisque, Moleskin and Handwritten. With mascara!

And RBL Plie nailpolish. I’m going for a look that says polished and knowledgeable. I’ve read you want the hiring people to pay attention to what you’re saying and not what you’re wearing. No Red Racer for me. :)

I remember watching Star Trek, Dr. Who, Dark Shadows, the Fresh Prince, Alf, the Simpsons
    10. weekly goals.
    Improve my time management skills.

At a push…fifteen minutes? I don’t even know if I could manage that!

    1. Mood: Cranky. My weekend didn’t turn out the way I thought it should and it’s super humid.
    2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why? I’m going with the faux fur vest. I’d just go in and wear some black leggings, knee high boots, black long sleeve tee and big sunglasses!

    1. Mood:Tired. Long day.

    2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why? Poncho. I could rock a poncho, bohemian style, much better than a furry purple vest.

    3. How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door? 30 minutes if I didn’t have to wash my hair. 45 minutes if I need to wash my hair.

    4. How many hours of sleep do you get each night? I try for 8. Lately, I’ve been tossing and turning in my sleep. I think we need to buy a new mattress.

    5. Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy? He used to forget to take my car keys out of his jacket and go to work with them the next day. After he lost our only set, I made him purchase 8 sets of keys!!! Now, he takes my credit card and forgets to put it back in my wallet. He needs to get a new card.

    6. Have you ever battled someone on the dance floor? Yes.

    7. What’s the last book you finished? A boring, informative text book.

    8. What’s the plan for today? Worked, now waiting for my husband to get ready and go out to eat with the family.

    9. What were your favorite TV shows when you were a kid? Cosby Show

    10. Weekly goals: Ride my bike 30 miles, hit the gym twice, only have one glass of wine with my girlfriend tomorrow night, purchase black and brown eyeliner, and mail my mom some Thai pumpkin seeds for her garden.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Wendy,

Have fun seeing your friend tomorrow night. :) Girls nights always make everything better.

What black/brown eyeliners are you thinking of getting, btw?

      • Wendy says:

Not entirely sure. Probably, Lancome. I have their artliner. I just need something for my waterline. And, I need to hid ALL my eyeliners from my daughter. She’s into thick, raccoon eyeliner and uses up all my blacks and browns. Makes me see red!!!

        • Karen says:

LOL, I used to do that with my mom’s makeup — “borrow” it permanently.

How do you feel about MAC? They make a gorgeous brown called Teddy that’s my jam these days:

          http://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/mac-makeup/mac-unsung-heroes-teddy-eye-kohl/

          • Wendy says:

Thank you for the advice! I will certainly check it out since I don’t have a brown that I love.

I’ve bought her Tarte products for face and lips. I used to get her Urban Decay liners. Since she devours eyeliners these days, I buy her various drug store eyeliners. Once she goes through this stage, I won’t mind spending more on her eyeliners. Did your mom hide her makeup from you too? lol

  27. Katherine G says:

    1. Mood:
~Exhausted. Worked the past 3 days in a row (Saturday, Sunday, and today), all 12 t0 14 hour shifts. Can’t wait for some much needed sleep, since tomorrow’s supposed to be hot and yucky, I think I’m going to rest most of the day!

    2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why?
~I would have to say neither, since neither one is in my personal style.

    3. How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door?
~If work calls and needs someone because they are short-staffed, I can be there in an hour including driving time. I’ve gotten ready in 5 minutes flat, and other times it’s taken me 30 minutes depending on what I’ve been doing when they called.

    4. How many hours of sleep do you get each night?
    ~If I’m lucky, I can get 12, but that’s rare. It’s more typical that I get 4 to 7 hours of sleep.

    5. Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy?
~Waking up early and then waking me up early in the morning on days off. When I need to sleep, I don’t like feeling bad about “wasting half the day.” He’s been a lot better about this, though, he realizes I need my sleep and that I’m a lot more energetic if I get the amount of sleep I need.

    6. Have you ever battled someone on the dance floor?
~Once, but I had a few drinks in me!

    7. What’s the last book you finished?
~Kelly Cutrone’s “Normal Gets You Nowhere.” I really love Kelly’s ballsy attitude and how she’s not afraid to say what’s on her mind. I often wish in certain situations that I could be more like her. She’s also wildly funny because she just says it outright!

    8. What’s the plan for today?
~Sleep! Worked all day. I’ve been up since the crack of dawn, literally (about 4 am) and got home at 8 tonight!

    9. What were your favorite TV shows when you were a kid?
~Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, The Sopranos (yep, started watching that when I was 14), Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman; Baywatch, tornado and storm videos/documentaries, and Deadwood (also watched some of that as a teen – was an HBO show about Deadwood, South Dakota and Calamity Jane and crew).

    10. Weekly goals:
~Get some much needed rest tomorrow and not worry about anything.
    ~Call and make doctor’s/hair appointments.
~Exercise once I recover from this weekend and make a point to do something each day.
    ~Stay positive and enjoy life!

  28. Krisabelle says:

    1. Mood: Mellow
    2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why? The vest as it’s 90 degrees here and that seems like it would be cooler than the poncho!
    3. How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door? 8 minutes including a shower, but I’m not looking too glam!
    4. How many hours of sleep do you get each night? Typically 7.
    5. Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy? He talks to the TV during sports…??? They can’t hear his helpful couching tips, but he remains dedicated to his craft.
    6. Have you ever battled someone on the dance floor? No.
    7. What’s the last book you finished? Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn – it was excellent!
    8. What’s the plan for today? Relax, run a few errands, and get caught up on Mad Men.
    9. What were your favorite TV shows when you were a kid? The Brady Bunch, Scooby Doo, Rainbow Brite, Family Ties, Growing Pains. So many more! Karen – loved the Double Trouble reference! Haven’t thought about that show in years! Also, does anyone remember I’m Telling?! That show was awesome. Siblings working together to win fabulous 80′s prizes like keyboards and pink bedding!
    10. Weekly goals: Lose weight (using the My Fitness Pal app – it’s free and amazing!), write thank you notes for the birthday gifts I received last week, finish a big project at work by Wednesday!

Have a great week, Karen! :)

    1. Mood: Calm with an undercurrent of stress – it is very much ‘watch this space’ regarding the rest of my week.
    2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why? Definitely the faux fur purple vest. I am not sure I grasp the method for wearing ponchos they confuse and annoy me. Vests are practical warmth (and even if I’m not a fur person I am all for wild colours like purple)
    3. How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door? what’s the reason? if its ridiculous o’clock and i’m going to the airport 5-10 minutes. standard working day 30 minutes. going out. up to an hour.
