- You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
Let me put it this way: I’ve got a smile on my face. 🙂 I had a really nice time with my family yesterday, and today El Hub is working from home, where he can keep me company. - Three things on your bucket list?
1) To grow and eat my own watermelon (I know it’s silly, but I’ve always wanted to do it), 2) to spend a month wandering through Italy, and 3) to cover the Cannes Film Festival for MBB! - If tattoos only lasted a year, would you be more/less likely to get one?
Hmm… What an interesting proposition. Well, I know myself pretty well. I think I’d be more inclined to get one, probably get something, think it was neat for about a month, and then get tired of looking at it and spend the next 11 months regretting it and obsessively trying to cover it up, LOL! - Something that drives you nuts?
The phrase, “You do you, and I’ll do me.” Damn you, Jersey Shore! - What’s the number one quality you value most in a pencil eyeliner?
Texture. Good ones gotta glide across my skin. If there’s any tugging involved, I can’t deal. - Three things that inspire you?
1) Regular people who change the world for the better, 2) traveling to new places and 3), believe it or not, long, hot showers.I feel like I come up with my best ideas in the shower…
- Does the sound of silence make you uncomfortable?
Not at all. I tend to get over stimulated in noisy situations. Yup, I’m not one of those people who can carry on two conversations at the same time.I also think that being able to sit quietly and comfortably with someone can be one of the most intimate things you can share.
- What’s one sentence that summarizes 2012 for you so far?
It hasn’t always been easy, but I feel like we’re getting somewhere. - Your best experience on public transportation?
Once, while I was on the ferry coming home to Marin from San Francisco, the captain of the boat got on the intercom and pointed out a whale skimming along the surface off our bow. - Weekly goals:
To log at least 12 miles on the treadmill, go to yoga class at least once (I miss being stretchy!), check out the Novato Public Library, and make fish tacos for dinner.
Good morning and happy Monday, my friend. 🙂 Did you have a good weekend? I hope you got everything you needed to get done and still had some downtime.
If you get a moment, please stop by and say hi in the Monday Poll. I always love to hear from you.

Katherine G says
1. Mood:
~Lazy today. It’s been raining all day here in Maryland. But, at least the river I kayak the most will get a lot of water and won’t be so low (it’s quite painful to kayak whitewater when the water is low – lots of rocks!).
2. Three things on your bucket list?
~Horseback tour of Ireland, have my own horses, and make a difference in life the way I am meant to.
3. If tattoos only lasted a year, would you be more/less likely to get one?
~Probably not, I had ideas for tattoos but kept seeing similar designs on others, and if I haven’t taken the plunge by now I never will.
4. Something that drives you nuts?
~When people talk on their cell phones and drive or text and drive. In my job, I have seen that and drinking and driving kill many people. In Maryland, it’s now a first time offense if you talk on your cell phone and drive (meaning a police officer doesn’t have to have another reason to pull you over for cell phone use), and I’m hoping fatalities and accidents from talking on cell phones and driving will decrease.
5. What’s the number one quality you value most in a pencil eyeliner?
~Has to have long wear time, be waterproof if I’m going to be near any pools or bodies of water, and can’t smudge. Also has to come off easily with good makeup remover.
6. Three things that inspire you?
~Beautiful weather, a great workout, and being with my fiance.
7. Does the sound of silence make you uncomfortable?
~Not really, I don’t do well in super crowded situations. I enjoy companionable silence at times, and I enjoy the “silence” of nature – getting to listen to bubbling creeks, animals, and rain without cars and people nearby.
8. What’s one sentence that summarizes 2012 for you so far?
~2012 is a year of new opportunities. I’m making new friends, exploring new job opportunities, and I’ve finally finished my bachelor’s.
9. Your best experience on public transportation?
~When I was riding Metro into DC with a bunch of other runners (it was so packed it was standing room only) to the Marine Corps Marathon. We were all sharing tips with one another and it was a friendly bunch.
10. Weekly goals:
~Get some good cardio in, and log in some good miles on the treadmill and outside.
~Stay positive, and if I’m in a bad mood, look for ways to improve my mood, like a hike, a run, or getting into a good book.
~Get stuff ready for my dad’s best friend’s wedding on Saturday.
Karen says
Hi Katherine G,
That’s super cool that you do river kayaking. I went on a short trip up the Wailua river in Kauai and it was so much fun. Do you kayak often?
Katherine G says
I did a lot last year, and did some good whitewater (my kayak can do up to a Class 3 but not 4 or 5 because it’s a recreational kayak and torpedoes through waves – meaning I get soaked if they are big) kayaking in New River (WV), the Potomac, and the Monocacy River (George Washington paddled up the Monocacy in the Revoloutionary War – it’s a river native to Frederick, MD). The rivers have been low so far this year because of no snow this winter and not much rain, and it’s hard to kayak when it’s low because there are tons of rocks to get stuck on. Hoping to get out soon though! You should definitely kayak more, it’s a great workout and lots of fun!
Karen says
There’s a place that rents kayaks near the bay that I drive by all whenever I hit up the food trucks. One of these days I plan to rent one and do some mellow kayaking. I’m all about mellow and boats, LOL!
Your kayaking sounds super serious! Did you take lessons or just jump into it on your own?
Katherine G says
I took a lesson in New River last year (I had started on the Monocacy since it’s a fairly easy river to kayak) in my 12 footer. I learned everything except how to roll, since my kayak isn’t a whitewater kayak and does not roll or flip easily at all (in fact, I’ve gone sideways down tiny waterfalls and still can’t flip that darned thing). I even made a wet exit, since my kayak got filled up with water in a good sized rapid, and I did reenactment of Titanic (it was ass-end up in the air, with the front filled up and I had to bail out and get the water out of it to get back in. Swimming with a water logged, 50 pound kayak is LOADS of fun). The lesson was great for when I attempted some class 3’s in the Potomac River in WV/MD area and did well, especially since I had bought special kayak floats for in front of the boat and a skirt (to prevent water from getting in).
I’d always wanted to kayak and get my own to do the rivers around here and be able to travel and try other rivers. The Monocacy up here in MD is great for beginners, only has one yucky rapid but that’s relatively easy to get through and fun. It’s a lazy river. If you’re ever looking to invest in one, I have a Wilderness Systems Pungo 120, and it will do everything except really big rapids. It’s a wonderful beginner kayak because it is so stable.

Nature, Dogs and my mom.

YES, so much so that I sometimes have a panic attack. I need noise. Not a whole lot of noise, but some noise. It drives my mom crazy too as she likes no background noise; she prefers silence!

A nice cold shower!
The rain (it does!), especially when the raindrops are trickling down the window pane–it makes me think of the things I’ve done for the day and pause for a moment to reflect…
Good music. Soothing melodies with elaborate harmonies and musical textures. Florence and Lana, both of you nail it for me!

7. Does the sound of silence make you uncomfortable? No! I love it. I have two gorgeous but very loud daughters, and when they’re both at school, I turn off the TV and just revel in the quiet. I agree that two people being quiet together is one of the most intimate things ever. Quiet is my favorite sound. Summer vacation is coming up, I have to enjoy it while I’ve got it!
8. What’s one sentence that summarizes 2012 for you so far? Change is GOOD!
9. Your best experience on public transportation?
