- You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
The sun is shining, it’s warm out, my allergies are somewhat under control — all in all, today has the makings of a pretty great day. - What’s your current favorite eye look?
The Hourglass Dune duo has been my daytime jam! I’ve been wearing both shades on my lids for an olive/gold smokey look, adding a dash of black liner along my water line for dramatic effect, LOL! - What’s your favorite fried food?
It varies, but if you start with a potato, I’ll probably like it. French fries, hash browns, tater tots, yum!And even though the thought of ’em frightens me a little, I get the feeling I’d be all over deep-fried Snickers bars.
- The next book on your reading list?
Bossypants, by Tina Fey.THAT WOMAN CRACKS ME UP! But I wish she’d stop trying to sell me Garnier hair dye…
- How’s your sense of direction?
Alright, I guess. I can usually find my way around, unless we’re talking about South San Francisco. That town is my navigational Achilles’ heel. It’s like the Bay Area’s Bermuda Triangle, the way the streets are laid out around the hills.I actually got lost there once (pre-GPS) and drove around for two hours before I found a way to get back on the highway.
- Do you think people can change?
Yes, most people. Most of the time. The optimist in me says “Yes.” 🙂 - Your favorite lipstick of all time?
Hmm… That’s a tough one. Probably MAC Viva Glam V, because I think it looks fantastic on almost everyone, and the proceeds go to a good cause. - What’s for lunch?
I’m craving crunchy, so maybe a crisp, cold salad with some fresh cut pineapple for desert. - What advice would you give your 20-year-old self?
What you’re feeling is depression, my love, and there’s no reason to feel embarrassed or ashamed by it. It happens to the best of us. Start by scheduling an appointment to see a counselor, and you’ll be on the road to feeling better.Exercise will also help you feel better sooner, so get off your butt and start moving!
- Weekly goals:
Squeeze in some extra play time with Tabs. He’s been fussy about not being able to spend the warm days outside and has a lot of pent up energy. Also, keep tracking your workouts using the My Fitness Pal app (that thing really works!), and remind yourself every day that “You’re doing just fine.”
Hello, sweets. 🙂 Happy Monday! I hope you had some time over the weekend to relax and re-charge. If you have a minute today, please swing by and let me know how you’re doing in the Monday Poll. I miss you.

Fieran says
1. Mood: Pretty good. Had a productive day at work and still sore from yesterday’s interval step class so it’s good 🙂
2. What’s your current favorite eye look? I’m actually not wearing any eye makeup the past few weeks as I’m still recuperating from Bell’s Palsy. Figured I should give my eyes a break from makeup and contact lenses.

5. How’s your sense of direction? It was quite bad when I used to sit in the backseat of the car while my parents drove me around as a kid/teenager. Nowadays, it’s pretty good since I take public transport almost everywhere (or walk). I do owe a little bit of it to Google Maps though.

7. Your favorite lipstick of all time? NARS Dolce Vita 🙂

8. What’s for lunch? Had broccoli and bulgur wheat
9. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? It’ll get worse but then it’ll get better!
10. Weekly goals: Finish packing, go to bed early so I don’t miss my flight, and eat better! I’m getting thick in the middle. 🙁
Advah says
Karen – forgot to say that if you can get your hands on the Bossypants audiobook, it’s even better than the book! I had to stop listening to it at the grocery store because I’d crack up randomly and start crying and get weird looks from people.:D
Karen says
Hi Advah,
It’s funny that you mention this because I was actually thinking about getting the audiobook! I like listening to them when I’m on the treadmill. 🙂 I’m assuming Tina reads it out loud, yes?
Karen says
Hi Advah,
Have soooo much fun on your holiday! Where are you headed?
Advah says
Yes it’s her reading it, and she’s a great reader! Definitely go for the audiobook and let me know what you think 🙂
And thank you, I can’t wait! I’m off to France – a few days in Nice then (near) Provence. I’m all packed and as usual my suitcases weight a ton..
Karen says
Okay, cool. I’ll put that on my iPod…looking forward to running lots of miles with it! 😀
So jealous about your trip to France. I’ve always wanted to go to Provence. Have you done all your sightseeing planning, or are you going to wing it? If you haven’t already, pick up a Rick Steve’s travel book. His guides are the best!
Heidi says
1. Mood:
Exhausted. Insomnia is apparently a permanent fixture in my life these days.
2. What’s your current favorite eye look?
For looking much more awake than I am: MAC’s Mega Metal shadow in Prance all over the lid area, and Bobbi Brown’s Denim Ink Gel Liner. Any navy blue liner is going to make the whites of the eyes look brighter and that helps.

Coconut shrimp

Probably some cook books. I’ve got a friend’s baby shower coming up soon and it’s potluck!
5. How’s your sense of direction?

8. What’s for lunch?
Some salad left over from yesterday’s takeout.

10. Weekly goals:
Try to reach out to people each day. I tend to isolate when I’m going through difficult times and I’m finding that to be a really bad idea.
Karen says
Hi Heidi,
It’s good to hear from you. 🙂 What are you thinking of cooking for your friend’s baby shower?
Heidi says
Probably something that can sit out for awhile, like some sandwiches or a non-mayo main dish salad. It should be a nice time. She’s expecting her third boy!

Ines, Cha Cha & LeRoux says
Oh Karen – I remembered you like to drink a lot of tea, here is the latest gadget that I’ve gotten my hands on for brewing loose leaf tea:
Bodum New Yo Yo Tea Strainer (Stainless Steel) with Pavina 20 fl. oz. Glass with Rubber Grips.
You gotta get this tea strainer. It’s pretty and it also prevents all the annoying little tea bits (especially finer leaf teas like rooibos and herbals) from getting into your tea, and the little lid also doubles as a strainer rest for when you’re not using it!
Karen says
Hi Ines,
Googling it right now! Sounds like something I’d use all the time.
Now you’ve got me thirsty for rooibos…NOM!
Karen says
Hi Ines,
I have a weakness for original glazed Krispy Kremes as well! Don’t you just love them when they come right off the conveyor belt?
Ines, Cha Cha & LeRoux says
Vanilla Rooibos – YUM-O, to quote Rachel Ray!
I totally
Karen says
Celestial Seasonings makes a rooibos that is swoon worthy. I like it with a little bit of milk and sugar.
Right now I’m drinking ginger tea! It helps when my tummy is grumbly. What have you got in your cup?
Ines, Cha Cha & LeRoux says
Hyunmi nokcha (genmaicha/brown rice green tea) – it’s so toasty and comforting :). I’m obsessed with this tea place in Montreal, they’re local & independent (but will ship all over N. America) – The Kiosque (thekiosque.ca). Their ginger tea is good too, and so is their Godiva Rocher (rooibos with caramel-chocolate tones, yummmehhhhhh)!

Karen says
I remember watching an interview once with Beyonce back in her Destiny’s Child days and hearing her rave about Popeye’s. 🙂 I haven’t had fried chicken in a while (my guilty pleasure was KFC); what I loved most about it was the crispy outside. 9. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? 20 was a difficult year for me. I would tell myself to stay focused on school and not to let others’ negativity and unhappiness destroy me. Karen says
Hi Tekoa,
I miss school too, and it’s been ages since I’ve been a student! The longing never really quite leaves you.
And good call on the work experience being key. If you can’t get a summer job, internships are great too, both for experience and for making connections.
Tekoa says
I’m applying for everything from temporary summer work to full time positions. Only at places I’d actually like to work of course. You should do a post on interview makeup. 😉

5. How’s your sense of direction? Not too bad, I lack confidence sometimes when I drive and that’s worse than a bad sense of direction. I tend to panic over dumb stuff.
6. Do you think people can change? Yes, absolutely! But only if they want it, and they have to want it! That’s the key to change.
7. Your favorite lipstick of all time? Clinique’s Almost Lipstick in Black Honey, and Benefit’s Benetint. Although Benetint is a stain, it’s a fabulous color!

Katie says
1. Mood: Groggy & annoyed because my last final is TOMORROW, but anxious for Wednesday, the day I go back to home to the Bay Area!
2. What’s your current favorite eye look? I’m feeling lazy, summer vibes, so nothing but mascara.
3. What’s your favorite fried food? A LOT of things, girl.
4. The next book on your reading list? Bulfinch’s Mythology – one of 80-something “classic literature” books I plan to read this summer!

Wendy says
1. Mood: Sad but hopeful. Trying to locate a childhood friend without much information.
2. What’s your current favorite eye look? Other than Laura Mercier primer in Wheat and mascara, I’ve been drawn to using LMdB’s Nutmeg on the lids and Corinthian on the crease and outer edge of lower lid with a dark brown eyeliner slightly winged and on the top water line.
3. What’s your favorite fried food? Spring rolls
4. The next book on your reading list? Don’t have my sights set on one yet.
5. How’s your sense of direction? Pretty good.
6. Do you think people can change? Depends. I used to think they could until I read a book written by a FBI profiler. Some people are too damaged.
7. Your favorite lipstick of all time? Don’t really have one. I used to love Rum Raison by Revlon. Although they still carry a lipstick with the same name, they discontinued the particular lipstick. The colors aren’t even the same.
8. What’s for lunch? I had a granola bar, hard boiled egg and chicken salad/fruit snack pack. The snack pack is like a ridiculously small condiment sized portion of chicken salad with 4 small pita chips, 3 baby carrots, 4 slices of apple, and a handful of grapes.
9. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? You are not alone. You can do it. Believe in yourself. You are worthy. Learn the difference between wants and needs. You don’t need a man. Mean, older women are most likely jealous of your youth and beauty.
10. Weekly goals: Hit the gym three times before Friday. Break in new road bike and learn how to use clip less pedals when the sun decides to make an appearance.
Katherine G says
~Good advice for your 20 year old self. I’m sure when we were all 20 we went through some variation of self-doubt, not knowing what to do with our lives, and going through tough stuff (though that can happen at any age!). And hey, the Garnier dye (that Tina Fey promotes) is actually pretty good – I use a red dye they make, called Hot Tamale, that produces vibrant color and lasts the full 2 months.
1. Mood:
~Tired. Had a busy weekend working, and had to deal with some tough situations at work.
2. What’s your current favorite eye look?
~I really like doing bright colors, or iridescent colors lately. I haven’t done a simple eye look in a while. I enjoy playing with different colors and combinations. My new fave iridescent colors are Urban Decay in Fishnet, Sephora brand in Sapphire, and Victoria’s Secret in Taboo. They are all great, blend pretty well, and last all day. My fave bright colors are anything Makeup Forever or NYX, but I especially love the neon orange, neon pink, and bright yellow that MUFE makes.
3. What’s your favorite fried food?
~Fried Twinkies are awesome. Though I can feel my arteries clogging up as I eat them. Oh, and funnel cakes are excellent.
4. The next book on your reading list?
~Hmmm, not sure. Was reading some historical fiction by Heather Graham. My Kindle gives me interesting suggestions, so I may look into some of those books.
5. How’s your sense of direction?
~Decent once I’ve studied a map of the county, city, or area, and even if I haven’t, I can still find my way to a highway or main road. Washington, DC, is a tough city to navigate by car, as the roads change at the drop of a hat (Rhode Island Ave zig zags across the city – you can’t follow that road in a straight path). It’s fairly easy if you take Metro and walk, but by car…you’ll be driving for 2 hours and then end up on 395 going to Virginia looking for a parking spot.
6. Do you think people can change?
~Some people, yes. And some people I honestly didn’t think could change proved me wrong eventually (or at least proved that they were capable of a genuine apology). Otherwise, there are certain people that you cannot change their minds or opinions on things no matter what. I’m stubborn, but I’m also willing to admit when I’m wrong!
7. Your favorite lipstick of all time?
~I don’t wear lipstick much, but I liked this fuschia/violet one from Victoria’s Secret and wore it a lot in high school.
8. What’s for lunch?
~I had a leftover Buffalo Chicken sub.
9. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self?
~That no matter what anyone says, it’s ok to not be ok from going through bad stuff. It’s ok to take time to heal, and it’s ok to get upset with people who think there is a time frame on healing from difficult things. It’s ok to figure yourself out, and to take time to figure yourself out.
I agree with the exercise note – at 20 I ran my first Marine Corps Marathon! It was a great achievement during a difficult year. I’m 24 and haven’t run another one since, but I’d like to.
10. Weekly goals:
~Do some hard workouts, and wake up a little earlier to do them.
~Clean up around the house, finish some filing.
~Get Mother’s Day and birthday gifts for Mom.
~Keep a positive, upbeat mood all week.

6. Do you think people can change?

7. Your favorite lipstick of all time?
I have yet to find one. I don’t really wear lipstick anymore. Still on Burt’s Bees. Oh… I did find a really pretty gloss over the weekend.

Nothing exciting!

Homemade Quiche with zucchini and spinach.
9. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self?
Enjoy every moment. Go after your dream. Actually I think I’m more confused with my life now, compared to when I was in my twenties. lol. Going after my passion is easy. Persisting is harder… so for the 20-year-old self, just enjoy life and stay being as awesome as you are :).

Great! I never need a map to get into the right direction. I’ve been to Rome a couple years back, and my mom wanted to go to the Roman Empire, but didn’t knew how to get there. My mom carried the map and I was walking ahead. I looked at the map once and knew the whole way to the empire.
