- You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 188. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
- Has a commercial ever brought you to tears?
- Something you’ve lost and would like to get back?
- When was the last time you thanked someone with a kiss?
- Three good things about your life right now?
- What store would you like to see open in your town?
- If you were a type of makeup, what would you be?
- First trip you remember taking on an airplane?
- Three songs that remind you of different times in your life?
- Weekly goals:
To quote Nina Simone, “I’m feeling good,” even though I got a late start. I went for a run this morning (endorphins, yay!), straightened out the papers on my desk and have a husky tabby at my feet. Things could be worse.
Man, that Dolphin Tale commercial had me bawling like a baby the first time I saw it. In my defense, I was totally PMS-ing at the time.
Um, my sanity?
Last night. El Hub made me a cup of Sleepytime tea to drink while we watched Win Win on the couch. Both the movie and the tea were great. 🙂
1) I’m healthy, 2) my loved ones are healthy and 3) a DSW Shoe Warehouse just opened in my ‘hood (and it’s only five minutes away!). Yesterday I brought home the boots up at the top (the Fallen boot by Fergie) to reward myself for sticking to my September workout schedule, since the Blowfish Brandi boots I’d originally wanted were out of stock.
Well, I’m pretty happy about the DSW, but a Neiman Marcus or an Ulta would be welcome additions to the area.
Gloss, fo’ sho’! It’s flexible, shiny and sparkly.
I was 11 or 12 at the time on a flight to visit my childhood best friend, whose family had recently moved from next door down to Southern California. About the flight I remember thinking how cool it was that they gave out free nuts and soda.
Another Night, by The Real McCoy, reminds me of my clubbing days with Jen in the late ’90s; Don McLean’s Bye Bye Miss American Pie reminds me of the day I packed up and left for college; Aaliyah’s Are You That Somebody? transports me back to that magical second half of my senior year.
This week I’m lifting my weekly goal from the movie I watched last night, Win Win. “Do whatever it f*cking takes.” LOL!
Mornin’! 🙂 Can we coffee talk for a moment about shoe heaven, aka DSW? The only other DSW store I’ve ever visited was in San Francisco, and that one was really stressful and overstimulating (crowded, messy, and I could never find a place to sit and try on shoes).
This one’s greater than great though. The aisles are nice and wide, there’s plenty of places to park your bum, and there’s even a Starbuck’s and a video game store (to entertain significant others) next door.
Yeah, I’m in trouble…

4. When was the last time you thanked someone with a kiss? Literally about 5 mins ago – the hubs unscrewed the filter thing on the washing machine that catches bits of fluff. I’d been fighting to get it open for days & only ever ask for help if it’s absolutely necessary 🙂
5. Three good things about your life right now? The hubs (not just b/c of the washing machine!); no financial worries; running a successful business. Can’t believe my luck.
6. What store would you like to see open in your town? Well Paris has plenty already!
7. If you were a type of makeup, what would you be? Metallic eyeliner. Small quantity, big effect!

Kim says
1. Mood: Pretty good, but nursing a sore back/shoulders (must have been that Firefly marathon I had going on all weekend).

10. Weekly goals: Focus, focus, focus!
Karen says
Ahhh, BLACK BOX! I have that CD around here somewhere… good times, the ’90s.
I didn’t know you were a Firefly fan! I love me some Captain Tight Pants. Do you watch him in Castle?
Kim says
Don’t you love those blast from the past songs?! 🙂
I’m totally laughing about Captain Tight Pants. I love the Firefly cast; it’s such a fun show (I know tons of people are still bummed it was canceled). It’s funny you mention Castle. I commented earlier today that I caught a minute of it last night, for the first time. I couldn’t get over the time warp. After watching Tighty for a few days when he was 30ish, it was so weird to suddenly see him at 40. I’m sure he could still rock his Mal outfit, though. 🙂 It also made me glad I’m not an actor. Looking at old pictures is bad enough – I wouldn’t want to see hours of film of my younger self, strutting around! HAHA!
Karen says
Did you watch the movie? If you haven’t I won’t reveal any spoilers… I will say that I cried buckets at the end. *tears*
Kim says
I did! I know; I loved both of those characters. I’d seen it when it first came out but watched it again last night (to much grumbling and sighing). 🙂
I think I’m going to give Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog a whirl, next. I’ve never seen it and my Firefly-loving friend raves about it. I love Netflix streaming. 🙂

10. Weekly goals:
Work out the kinks on my nutrition plan, get back into regular exercise, and take time for some quiet time each day.
Karen says
Hi Heidi,
Where did this rain come from? I knew it was on the horizon, but I didn’t expect it to get so cold, damp and dark so soon. It’s only a matter of time before the cats get fired up. I’m sure Tabs and Missy are already texting about the injustice of it all. 😉
Heidi says
I know! I had to go to the bank and Whole Foods this morning and it was just a light drizzle when I left the house. I got the bank taken care of (drive through ATM, yeah!), got into Whole Foods, and by the time I was ready to leave the store it was really coming down! Ugh!
By the way, I tried the Kind bars this weekend and now I’m hooked! I picked up a few more flavors at Whole Foods that aren’t carried at Trader Joe’s. I’m looking forward to the one with the added protein.
Missy came out to greet me when I got home. She stepped outside of the garage, got wet, then proceeded to run around the house at about 90 mph like a lunatic. She’s napping now.
Karen says
Yay! I’m so glad you like them. I also like the apricot bars with the yogurt, too. They’re great if I’m in the mood for a healthy, sweet treat.
Been meaning to tell you thanks for recommending Tim Gunn’s book. I read it this weekend and really, REALLY enjoyed it. It couldn’t have come at a better time.
Is it sunny there today? Tabs is already very excited about going outside for his walk.
Heidi says
Glad you loved the Tim Gunn book. He’s like the voice of reason in an industry full of cray cray!
The sun keeps coming and going here today. Glad it’s not raining as are yard work guy is currently here. He’s got a lot of leaves to clear up.
So, I’m waiting to hear confirmation about a job interview on Friday. I hooked up with an employment agency a couple of weeks ago and they seem very committed to helping me. They’re trying to get me set up for my first work assignment which would be for a couple of months. They’re going to let me know if the company in question wants to interview me. Things are finally progressing!
Karen says
Any word on the job interview yet? I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you!
Heidi says
Didn’t hear back today. They’re probably playing phone tag. I should hear something tomorrow.
Karen says
Keeping my fingers crossed!

Em says
I know! Its just not the same. I miss his stare-downs!
Melissa says
1. Mood: Happy! I left my favorite fountain pen on the podium in a giant lecture hall last week, but randomly decided to check the room today on the off chance it was there and it was! Though someone had used up all the ink… I’m so thankful I got it back.

Good thing that your pen was still there! I have lost many nice pens and know that feeling of heartbreak when you realize that your fave writing instrument is gone forever.
Christina says
1. Mood: Quite accomplished and slightly exhausted XD I just got back from a day of school and hadn’t been able to get on the internet since last night!
2. Has a commercial ever brought you to tears? A commercial/trailer for The Christmas Bunny got me all tearing up. I love bunnies so much and I’m super sentimental and emotional XD Any heartwarming family movies with an adorable animal will pretty much get me.
3. Something you’ve lost and would like to get back? Heh… some of my self-esteem? College has really taught me to be resilient, but I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t gotten a little broken down along the way.
4. When was the last time you thanked someone with a kiss? My grandma 🙂 I may be 20, but she’ll still fuss over whether or not I forgot something before I leave the house to go back to my apartment near UCSD.
5. Three good things about your life right now? a) My recrystallization experiment produced a bunch of crystals (Hopefully a good start for my organic chemistry lab) b) I’m nearly finished writing my supplemental essays for pharmacy school and should be able to submit them this weekend c) I was able to get some MAC goodies from the Fall Colour Collection and a cute pair of earring from Nordstroms!
6. What store would you like to see open in your town? Back in Chula Vista… It would be awesome to get a Nordstroms in the area. But there will be a Nordstroms Rack opening in October!
7. If you were a type of makeup, what would you be? Eye shadow because it can be subtle or dramatic. And you can’t judge how it’s going to turn out just from how it looks in its container! 🙂
8. First trip you remember taking on an airplane? I was a youngun in elementary school flying to Las Vegas with the parents and my ears started to pop. It hurt so badly I started to cry and the flight attendant gave me apple juice. I’ll admit the juice made it better XD

Kate & Zena says
1. Mood:
Tired. My Intermediate Algebra class sucked out ALL of my energy.
2. Has a commercial ever brought you to tears?
From sadness or laughing so hard? If it’s the former, no, but the latter, yes. I find the VW Passat commercial so cute and funny (the Star Wars one.) I find a lot of commercials funny.
3. Something you’ve lost and would like to get back?
My Benefit EyeBright pencil. I should admit defeat and just buy a new pencil. The Anastasia one that came with a $10 Sephora kit just does not do the same thing EyeBright does by a million years.
4. When was the last time you thanked someone with a kiss?
Yesterday. My momma paid for my eyebrow’s being tweezed because my allowance wouldn’t cover for it!
5. Three good things about your life right now?
Zena. Dr. Geroulis, the great and wonderful migraine doctor. Margarine (I went three days without my daily grilled cheese. I’m going nuts.)
6. What store would you like to see open in your town?
A MAC one. The nearest one is an hour and a half away. Or a Topshop.
7. If you were a type of makeup, what would you be?
Eyeshadow or nail polish. I’m a little crazy, love color and my moods can swing really easily, but I’m easily lovable. I’m shy, but I’m bold with my colors. Those two happen to be my two favorites. 🙂
8. First trip you remember taking on an airplane?
Spring Break of 2004. My choir went to Florida to perform at Disneyworld and Clearwater Beach. I cried the entire take off because I was so scared and anxious. I actually started the trip with bright perky pink nail polish and by the time I got to Florida, I had Dalmation nails from picking of and biting off the nail polish during the flight from anxiety. I had to buy a nail polish wipe and wipe off my nail polish. I learned an important lesson that day–never wear bright nail polish on a trip!
9. Three songs that remind you of different times in your life?
-“The Edge of Glory” Lady Gaga — High school graduation, even though it was in 2007. Never felt happier.
-“My Heart Will Go On” Celine Dion — The year my dad went to Korea, this song dominated the radio (1998.) The song really told the story of my mom and dad at that point in time, so I cried when I hears this song a lot. I don’t cry know, but it still reminds me of this time.
-“Hakuna Matata” Lion King — I had to pick this song because it’s just the song that describes the movie of my childhood. The Lion King was the movie that epitomizes the 90s and I was a 90s king! Hakuna Matata was a song that I sang forever and ever and ever. I drove my mom crazy with the song!
10. Weekly goals:
-Survive math!
Karen says
Hang in there, Kate. I know exactly how you feel about math… I found it very challenging!
Kate & Zena says
Oh God, math is so hard for me. I think it’s hard for a lot of people, especially women, but it’s super hard for me because I don’t actually see or comprehend numbers. I’m an image-based autistic so I see in images, colors, textures….not words and numbers. Math gets that much harder!
The math I’m in is considered the second half of the algebra you supposedly took in high school. Um, no, I didn’t divide exponents and factor GCF in high school!!!! I come to school a half an hour before my class begins to get help with the problems I didn’t understand from my teacher. I’m surprised I haven’t driven my math teacher insane yet. He’s so far learned I didn’t learn my 12 multiplication tables well, I’m slow at fractions and bad at geometry, and I have no mental math skills! All in three weeks pretty much. Ha ha. XD

OMG the Fergie boots are my fave! Totally wore them all last fall/winter in the grey color. They are so comfortable, cute and everywhere i go i get major compliments on them. When people ask what brand they are i always laugh and say “Fergie” and they are in disbelief! Was at DSW a couple weeks ago and i totally picked them up in black as well! I am contemplating getting a second pair of the grey for back up….. hmmmmmm…… 😉 Shoe addiction! Had to share… enjoy your new boots!

I feel the same way! When I first saw that they were by Fergie I was like, “Fergie? Like Fergalicious?” LOL!
I really, really love them. I wore them around yesterday and they were just so comfy. I’m kind of lemming the black pair now.
Question for you — did yours fit true to size? I had to go a half a size up to 7.5.

So late but I was kind of distracted @ work yesterday….so here’s Monday’s recap
1. Mood: Okay…I was late to work but I got in & did what I’m paid to do. It just sucked because I didn’t get my morning workout in.
2. Has a commercial ever brought you to tears? Oh yea. But then I’m just naturally emotional ::sigh:: but it was the State Farm commercial of all the kids singing Alicia Key’s “Empire State of Mind (New York)” to the firefighters in honor of 9/11
3. Something you’ve lost and would like to get back? My belief in romance…so hard to find a good guy nowadays
4. When was the last time you thanked someone with a kiss? A kiss on the cheek count? Cuz if so then my parents this past weekend for an awesome weekend just hanging out.
5. Three good things about your life right now? I’m alive, my parents & brother are well, and I have a job.
6. What store would you like to see open in your town? Ooo good question. I’m pretty lucky where I live…probably an H&M. I hear it’s a really good store for nice clothes and there’s none close to where I am.
7. If you were a type of makeup, what would you be? Eyeliner. One of my favorite makeup products & it usually helps make eyes really POP.
8. First trip you remember taking on an airplane? Oh boy umm probably to NY and I don’t know how old I was since I’ve gone every year since I was like 2. But my most memorable was my flight back from Canada. Half way home the entire trip was turbulance galore. It was the first time I was ever afraid of flying.
9. Three songs that remind you of different times in your life? Anything by Backstreet Boys/*NSYNC transports me right back to elementary/middle school. OutKast’s “Hey Ya” puts me on a charter bus heading to Orlando w/ my junior class in hs. P!nk’s “Who Knew” reminds me of the moment I found out my dance teacher had died. I drove home for her funeral listening to that song on repeat.
10. Weekly goals: I made it two weeks of consistent exercise and more focused eating! I’m excited! So my goal is to maintain that for this week by getting in my exercises @ least twice a day as well as straighten up my room and study.
Hope you and everyone else is having an awesome week so far!!
