- You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 195. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
- Your favorite Thanksgiving entrée or side?
- What’s one thing — beauty related — you feel thankful for?
- What’s one thing — non-beauty related — you feel thankful for?
- What’s been the biggest surprise for you so far this year?
- When was the last time you were the recipient of a random act of kindness?
- Gloves or mittens?
- What’s one thing you do to keep yourself motivated?
- Have you ever been to one of your high school reunions?
- Weekly goals:
I’m okay… Just okay. I had a nightmare last night (abandonment was the theme), and it’s been lingering with me all morning. I just got off a nice phone call with my mom, though, and feel a lot better. No one can comfort me like my mom…
Pecan pie! OOH! And stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans… I could go on. I usually like the sides more than the actual turkey.
MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation. After not using it regularly for a while, I was recently reminded why I love it so much. It’s lightweight, buildable, doesn’t give me breakouts, and I can get away with using very little and still achieve great coverage.
I really appreciate being able to build it up to cover my trouble spots, or go sheerer by spritzing my MAC 188 skunk brush with MAC Fix+ before applying it on the areas where I don’t need as much coverage.
On top of all that, it stays put all day long. Bravo.
The boys (El Hub and Tabs). Without ’em I’d be a certified crazy pants (in case you’re wondering, that’s the clinical term).
Working with MAC to create EvRev was a pretty awesome surprise.
Yesterday while I was waiting in line at Target. I got to talking with an older gentleman waiting in front of me. He was there buying Christmas presents for his seven grandkids, and after he’d paid for his things, he got one of those long strings of coupons from the register, glanced at them, and then looked at my cart, smiled and said, “Here, I think you can use this one.”
It was a small gesture, but very sweet. 🙂
Gloves. You just never know when you’ll need to be able to use your fingers to pinch the crap out of someone, and mittens interfere with proper pinching technique… Yes, I speak from experience.
Star stickers! I print out a simple calendar, post it on the fridge, and then place a star sticker next to the days when I make progress toward my goal.
What’s great is that it works even better as the stars accumulate over time.
Not yet. My 20-year is coming up soon (!), but I’ve kept in touch with my best friends from school.
To get in at least three runs before T-Day, to take a ton of drool-worthy food pics, and to eat an entire pie!
Yesterday El Hub and I grabbed some Vietnamese food for lunch, and while we were at the restaurant, I had a dollop of that Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce. You know the one I’m talking about, right? The rooster sauce?
I’ve steered clear of it for years, but I guess I felt a little adventurous yesterday, and I’m glad I did.
I’m not really a spicy food person, but I forgot how delicious that stuff is (in moderation). The burn builds up over time, instead of just hitting your taste buds right off the bat, so I can take it as long as I’m careful about how much I use.
We used to keep a bottle in the house for El Hub, who loves hot food, but we got rid of it once after he OD’d.
In music news, did you to watch the AMA Awards last? I’m kinda bummed because I totally forgot they were on. I was so busy watching the zombie melodrama on The Walking Dead that the AMA’s slipped my mind.
Not AMA related, but I’ve been listening to Uncharted by Sara Bareilles a lot lately. It just makes me feel so…good. And the video’s such a crackup.
Now without further ado, the Monday Poll. 🙂

Rengirl says
1. Mood: Bliss. It’s a short work-week – I just have to be in the office today and after that, I get to spend the rest of the week with my family.
2. Fave Tgiving side: my husband makes the most irresistible cranberry sauce. All other foods are a mere delivery system for this sauce and I put it on everything.
3. Thankful beauty: this is a hard one because I’ve been having a lot of luck with products lately! I guess I’m going to say pure rose oil. I emulsify a few drops on my hands and pat it over my skin after apply an AHA moisturizer and I must say that my skin has been amazing since I started doing this.
4. Thankful non-beauty: my family obviously but if we’re talking material things, my iPhone hands-down. It helps me enjoy and manage my life – I use it for everything from staying healthy, connected to friends and enjoying books.
5. Big surprise: 4 months ago, I saw an inspiring before/after fitness video on youtube and finally decided to get off my butt. And now here I am wearing my pre-pregnancy clothes. 2. Your favorite Thanksgiving entrée or side? I die for mashed potatoes with loads of gravy.

5. What’s been the biggest surprise for you so far this year? College acceptance letters I got in May. Over the course of this year, though, I would say it’s been seeing my self-assurance/confidence grow. It’s evident in little things, like the way I dress, walk, talk.

Talkin’ about Walkin’ Dead!
1) I get that Maggie was angry at Lori for sending Glenn out to get her items, but is it really Lori’s fault that she got attacked? Considering her family’s barn situation, I hope this opens up her eyes to the fact that Walkers are dangerous. It just came across as…disingenuous?
2) I found it SO hilarious that Andrea got, ahem, turned on by killing zombies. She and Shane had a lot of sexual tension over the season. You could totally tell, LOL.
3) Dale’s confrontation with Shane was so badly timed. He had the right intention in confronting Shane, but the timing (right after Shane was with Andrea? Looks like jealousy.) and way he did it (alone, instead of with the rest of the group) was wrong.
4) Lori’s decision was tough. Her conversation with Rick made me really empathize. 🙁
Shannon says

8. What’s one thing you do to keep yourself motivated? …hm. that’s a good question. Probably list-keeping. And checking things off. That’s always exciting.
9. Have you ever been to one of your high school reunions? Nope. Didn’t actually go to high school. Homeschoolers FTW! 🙂
10. Weekly goals: blarg. To get through tomorrow and then to chill the eff out. I am SO excited for Thanksgiving and not working.
Vonvon says
1) mood: knackered, brain fried from overwork, yes, but not from housework. So, that makes me happy and have a great sense of achievement, though it’s still far from finish.
2) errr…..the cranberry sauce? Lol! And I am gonna try making my first own cranberry sauce this Thursday. Hehe!
3) beauty related stuff I am thankful for….. Guerlain Meteorites! Can always fake a great complexion with it, and get that glow!
4) It’s not a thing, but a person. My late father who had given me a good life and good education, not only my medical school, but also educated me in many things in life, and now I am where I am today, all because of him. 🙂 amidst the tears…….
5) nothing really….
6) don’t really remember……
7) gloves, though I have some cute mittens. 😉
8) work, and more work. Crazy, I know. But once I complete a work, or a blog post, I am motivated to do more!
9) yes, went to my 10th year reunion and that was 5 years ago. Another 5 years, may be someone will organize a 20th year?
10) finish off some work by Wed, and off to a nice dinner. Then, Thu cook for Thanksgiving dinner, and weekend, some rest, and may be more work!

Make lists and plans to keep on track
9. Have you ever been to one of your high school reunions?
Nope, but I will go to my college reunions.
10. Weekly goals:
Finish everything on my work to-do list before the end of Wednesday.
Jenna says
1. Mood: Tired. Late night party with my friends (we didn’t go to sleep until 5 am!) on Saturday, homework late last night. But I am optimistic at the thought of not having a lot to to tonight.
2. Thanksgiving food: Definitely turkey with cranberry sauce on top. Ok, and the cheesy potato hot dish my mom makes for both sides of the family’s holiday meals.
3.One beauty related thing you’re thankful for: Maybelline Eye Studio Master Drama Eyeliner. I am not too good with eyeliner, but this stuff’s a breeze to put on, and it stays on my oily eyelids all day.
4. One non beauty related thing you’re thankful for: My mom and dad. And my friends, at both schools. And my rabbits and dog. Ok, and maybe my brothers…
5. Biggest surprise so far this year: Probably getting a piano.
6. Last time you were a recipient of a random act of kindness: Well, this is the last time I remember, and I don’t know if it counts, but once, in the spring, I think, I was walking home, going up the hill, and it was raining pretty bad and I was just wearing a sweatshirt and jeans, and a man in a car who was driving up stopped and offered me his umbrella. I turned him down, because I was almost home, but I still thought that was nice. People don’t do things like that anymore, it seems.
7. Gloves or Mittens: Mittens are warmer, but gloves tend to look prettier, like they accentuate your fingers. But I think if I were choosing from a practical sense, I’d choose mittens. Or better yet, those mittens that are actually gloves with a mitten part over the top.
8.One thing you do to keep yourself motivated: Well, from the homework perspective, while I’m doing my homework I like to listen to “Scarlett Glasses” by Mark Salling and “Genie in my Dreams” by Sharon Little on repeat. They are very energizing. Also, I will sometimes time myself. Like, I will do APUSH (AP US History) homework for 25 minutes and then read or something for 5 minutes.
9. Have you ever been to one of your high school reunions: Well, considering I’m still in high school…no.
10. Weekly goals: Get caught up on my APUSH homework. Then read the 5 library books in my room that are 2 weeks overdue.

1. Mood:
~Content, but anxious for my Sociology professor to post my final exam online tonight so I can get it done and focus on Thanksgiving preparations tomorrow.
2. Your favorite Thanksgiving entrée or side?
~I looovvveee the turkey, stuffing, Chi Chi’s cornbread, and sweet potatoes.
3. What’s one thing — beauty related — you feel thankful for?
~Hmmm….I would have to say what I use for zits (exfoliating face wash, retinol, and my zit cream). I don’t feel very pretty with zits and it means when I go out I have to do concealer and foundation (sometimes I do like the make-up free look….if I don’t have to look good to go somewhere, I am perfectly happy being bare-faced and in sweats).
4. What’s one thing — non-beauty related — you feel thankful for?
~My fiance/family. I appreciate them and love them more every day.
5. What’s been the biggest surprise for you so far this year?
~Finding out that I do have the strength to move on to this next career goal. I thought when filling out the applications that some things I have been through would hold me back, but I realized that it only makes me stronger and that I will be very good at this job because of them. Also, getting engaged this year was something of a surprise.
6. When was the last time you were the recipient of a random act of kindness?
~Whenever my fiance helps me around the house or makes dinner. In my job I do not expect people to give back. Sure, I’ll nearly pass out from not eating for 12 hours, but patient care to me comes first….can’t stop ’em from coming in the ER just so I can eat or pee.
7. Gloves or mittens?
~Gloves. Mittens are cute but I can’t do anything while wearing them.
8. What’s one thing you do to keep yourself motivated?
~I think of what I could do after I get it done, whether it’s a work day at one of my 2 ER’s, or schoolwork. I also think of what could happen if I don’t get it done. I’m not one who can live with guilt for very long.
9. Have you ever been to one of your high school reunions?
~I’m only 23 so it hasn’t happened yet. I have met former classmates though in the unlikeliest of places – work, in my hometown, etc.
10. Weekly goals: Get this damn Sociology test over and done with tonight (or early tomorrow morning), clean the house before Thanksgiving, and make sure everything is ready for Thanksgiving.

That I have good genes coming from both the ‘rents and never had to deal with horrible acne growing up.
4. What’s one thing — non-beauty related — you feel thankful for?
For my boyfriend Steven and to us living together. The day after Thanksgiving we celebrate the 10th anniversary of our first date. On Thanksgiving night ten years ago we had our first of many 6+hr conversations. In our time together we have spend nearly eight years as a long distance couple with college and family matters keeping us apart. We have now lived together for a little over a year and although we argue over who’s turn it is to do the dishes I have never felt so complete and happy. Steven is truly my soul mate.
5. What’s been the biggest surprise for you so far this year?
I interviewed for a promotion at work. I definitively psyched myself out afterwords and thought that I completely bombed it. The very next day I was offered the position.

My boyfriend and I live not-so-close to family. A family friend of Steven’s invited us to come to Thanksgiving Dinner with her family who lives closer to us.

This is something that I need to work on doing a better job at. My motivations for most things has been diminishing =C

My ten year reunion is coming up next year. I was especially awkward in HS. I had just moved to the US from Mexico and had a little bit of a hard time adjusting. I made a couple of great friends with whom I am still in contact with— if they make it back I guess I will give it a try too.
10. Weekly goals:
Make it thru Wednesday!
Melissa says
1. Mood: hanging in there! One… more… day…
2. Your favorite Thanksgiving entrée or side?: We never went all-out on Thanksgiving, but my favorite thing that my mom would make is potato leek soup and broccoli and ham quiche.
3. What’s one thing — beauty related — you feel thankful for?: My hair is in great shape (if that’s beauty related), I don’t use any heat drying or styling or anything, and the worst I do to it is darken it every few months and trim my bangs. Long hair for life!
4. What’s one thing — non-beauty related — you feel thankful for?: My education.
5. What’s been the biggest surprise for you so far this year?: That I got into a grad program. It was reallllllly tough this year, and after I was denied from 6 (!!!) schools and waitlisted for one (that I didn’t even want to apply to in the first place but was talked into), I was under the impression I wouldn’t get in any place. Luckily I did! This program only has a 10% acceptance rate, and in my field you need a master’s or ph.d. to practice.
6. When was the last time you were the recipient of a random act of kindness?: Just last Thursday 🙂
7. Gloves or mittens?: I love those half gloves with the mitten part you can unfasten and cover your finger tips!
8. What’s one thing you do to keep yourself motivated?: Take a break and do something that makes me happy (e.g. knitting or embroidery). It seems counterproductive, but I tend to get really un-motivated and discouraged when I work way too much.

10. Weekly goals: Cook a delicious meal on Thursday and stay as far away as humanly possible from the parade in Herald Sq. It is miserable in real life.
Adrienne says
Karen, you do NOT look old enough to be going to a twenty year reunion!!
1. Mood:Â
Not bad. Work was rough, but beforehand I got some great deals at a Ross clothing store. Calvin Klein dress for $20, woohoo! Plus I found half a bottle of José Cuervo when I was cleaning, so I’m having some drinks while watching Jim Sturgess eye candy in the movie 21 🙂 (Apparently my kitty Daphne takes after her momma, she keeps trying to sneak licks of margarita!)
2. Your favorite Thanksgiving entrée or side?
I’m part Greek, so we always have Spanikopita and Baklava, both of which my mom makes THE best, no competition! I’m really gonna miss it this year, I’m staying home so I can work black Friday and not have to deal with travelingÂ
3. What’s one thing — beauty related — you feel thankful for?
Ughh… Foundation! Without it I’d never have the courage to step out of the house!
4. What’s one thing — non-beauty related — you feel thankful for?
My parents. I don’t show my appreciation much, and I’m never as good to them as I should be, but they’ve really always been there for me, and someday I’ll find the right way to tell them that I’d be lost and floundering without them.Â
5. What’s been the biggest surprise  for you so far this year?

Gloves!! Though when it’s super cold I pull my fingers in and ball them up so my gloves are basically mittensÂ
8. What’s one thing you do to keep yourself motivated?
Holding off on things I want to save them as rewards, and guilt tripping myself (get that from a Greek mother lol)
9. Have you ever been to one of your high school reunions?
I actually just went to my 5 year this summer! It was on our class president’s farm. I’m from the sticks, bumble-eff nowhere, dirt-road country!! Haha. I’m totally a city girl at heart though, always have been 🙂
10. Weekly goals:
Sneak in some overtime so I can get a good paycheck, lol!!

5. What’s been the biggest surprise for you so far this year? When my cousin told me she was having twins in August. I had no clue!

7. Gloves or mittens? Gloves, it’s easier to hold hands with my honey.
8. What’s one thing you do to keep yourself motivated? For working out, I write down my scores or times. That way when I do the same workout, I can try to beat them. I also have pics of what I’ve looked like before. I can see the amount of muscle and strength I have; it keeps me going.
9. Have you ever been to one of your high school reunions? Yes I did. It was my 10 year a few years ago. It was snowing, so very few people showed up. Very few people who weren’t close to me didn’t recognize me.

PS I loooove that rooster hot sauce. Easy on it though, they’re pretty high in sodium!

4. What’s one thing — non-beauty related — you feel thankful for? My wonderful classmates who totally understand me and why I love musical theatre. People like that are few and far between.
