- You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 194. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
- How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning?
- Do you have any plans for the holidays?
- What’s one new thing you would like to try this week?
- The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?”
- A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately?
- Do you wish that you could speak any other languages?
- Shave, pluck or wax?
- Things you’d like to do before the end of the year?
- Weekly goals:
Distracted but otherwise a-okay. The roofers are here doing repairs on our garage (I’m waving at them right now through my office window… “Hi, guys!”), and there’s quite a commotion.
It varies wildly. Anywhere from 2-15 minutes, depending on how cooperative Lloyd Christmas is being (my bangs) and what I’m trying to do with my wavy hair.
If all goes well, then it takes me about five minutes to de-frizz and shape, unless I’m curling or flat ironing, in which case I’m looking at about 15.
And if I just can’t cajole Lloyd and the waves (great name for a band!) into behaving, I’ll slip on a Goody headband and a ponytail holder and call it a day.
Even though I miss having super long hair…I have to say that shorter hair sure has been easier to wear.
Not yet, nope. And to tell you the truth, I’m beginning to fret about it.
Now that El Hub’s parents have moved to California from Hawaii (they’re about a four-hour drive away from us), things are a little more complicated.
When they lived in Hawaii, visits were more cut and dry. We either went to Hawaii or stayed here in the Bay Area, but now with everyone within driving distance, both sides of the family will try to get together, or we’ll be driving back/forth.
I’m thankful that we’re all much closer together, but I haven’t quite figured out the new logistical challenges.
Last week I got a $20 voucher for 20 classes at a local yoga studio (I found the deal on Living Social), and I’d really like to make it to at least one class this week.
Pie! 🙂 Pumpkin, apple, pecan…
I recently rediscovered Tarte Provocateur Pressed Mineral Powder after a long hiatus. Why I ever stopped using it, I have no idea.
It refuses to settle into my fine lines and pores and feels as light as air on my skin. Amazing stuff!
Oh, yes. French, Italian and Spanish, mainly because I would like to eat my way through Spain, Italy and France.
When I’m in a hurry, shaving AND plucking, and waxing when I have an extra hour to kill (I do it myself).
Meet and then maintain my weight-loss goal despite the good eats this time of year, re-organize my entire makeup collection, and plan to take a short trip some place warm in January.
Just one this week. I feel a little off kilter right now, so I just want to make it through the week in one (ideally happy) piece.
Hey, hey, cutie pie. 🙂 I just realized that following today, we only have six Mondays left in 2011.
I know! We’re in single digit territory…
We’re also coming up on our fifth year together, since I started MBB back in February of 2007.
This may sound corny, but I’m always grateful to be able to start the week with your friendship. I’m not kidding. Without you I’d probably go full-on bat sh*t crazy.
Before you jet, do you have a minute to touch base in today’s Monday Poll? I hope you do.
- To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

Hi Nina!
How was your weekend? I missed ya.
I think I remember you saying the Hubs fam is from San Diego? Is that where you’re headed for Christmas?
Nina says
missed ya too! saturday we stayed out most of the day just stomping around …
yesterday, i hung out w/ my sister and we went shopping. got some stuff for me and for presents.
its my best friend’s family thats in SD. the hubs’ fam lives in west texas. 🙂
Karen says
Ahh, I knew you had a SD connection but wasn’t quite sure how it fit. Sounds like you had a fun weekend. I had a shopping Saturday too (Sephora, Marshalls and Petco). What did you end up getting?
Nina says
i went to Sephora, Nordstrom Rack, F21, Gap and Barnes & Noble.
i really only had to return a pair of jeans and get the full size Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum, but ended up w/ a couple of shirts, a book and some camis as well. 🙂
Karen says
Oh, nice. There seems to be a lot of great sales going on right now.
How are you liking the Vinoperfect Serum? I have a sample but have yet to try it!
Monday is almost done… YES!
Nina says
there are pretty good deals around, i tried not to shop as much as i really wanted to though LOL!
i think im loving the vinoperfect serum. i got a sampler set a month or so ago bec i wanted a better serum for the wintertime. i started to use it 2 wks or so ago and i can see some improvement! 🙂
Karen says
You’re so good. I go into a store for one thing then… whoops! 🙂
I will have to check out that serum. Right now I’m using one I got from Dermstore from a line called Replenix, but I’m always down to try something new. Is it moisturizing?
Rachael says
1. Mood: Content, emailed my paper today and have nothing pressing this week. Ah peace.
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning? Depends, for the most part I let it air dry so however long that takes.
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays? Eat lots and lots of food. I’ll be meeting most of my fiance’s extended family this season and decorating on Black Friday because I’m too afraid of all the people to leave my house.
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week? Actually getting in my workout. I can’t gain too much weight over the next few weeks (it’s hard with Thanksgiving which is my fav) or else I won’t be able to fit into my wedding dress with out breathing.
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?†Thanksgiving! It’s my favorite holiday and my favorite foods all in one. Plus I can wear sweat pants to Thanksgiving dinner and my family doesn’t judge me cause we all do it!
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately? Watt’s Up. Trying out a sample from Sephora before the wedding. Looks fine now cause I have a little tan left, but with a winter wedding, I think it’ll be too dark for my pale skin.
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages? I can already speak French, but I wish I knew Spanish. All I can speak in Spanish is enough to order tequila, margaritas, enchiladas, and guac.
8. Shave, pluck or wax? Shave and pluck. I’m a pansy and waxing sounds painful.
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year? Get the engagement photos done. We’re waiting on snow first. Come on Ohio do your crazy weather!
10. Weekly goals: Laundry, read while on the treadmill more, and knit more
Karen says
Rachael, I’m so happy for you! This is such an exciting time, and I hope you enjoy every second of it. Do you have any idea what you’re doing for your wedding makeup?
Rachael says
I am enjoying it much more now that I’m finished planning all the major details, the cake being my favorite detail. Probably the best appointment I went to, I got to eat and the fiance got to play with a dog.
For my makeup, I have no idea. I want to keep it natural looking but still look good for photography (and last from 12 to 11). I just don’t want it turning out like in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, where it’s super caked on. Not a look I want too have sitting on my coffee table for years to come.
Karen says
Are you hiring a makeup artist or doing it yourself?
Rachael says
I’ll probably do it myself, I used to model so I have an idea of what looks good in photography. Or I’ll do the beauty consultation thing at like MAC or Sephora and get a step by step to do that look and re create it myself after I get my hair done.
Karen says
Oh, that sounds great. That way you can get it exactly the way you want it to look. 🙂 Can’t wait to hear about the colors/look you decide on.
Are you a perfume kind of girl? If you are, one fun thing to do is to buy a special scent you haven’t worn before and save it for your wedding day. I did that with Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, and now every time I wear it it takes me back to the day I got married.
Rachael says
That’s a great idea! I’ve been debating on D&G The One Rose or Prada Infusion d’Iris anyway. Time to make a decision then.
Karen says
I’ve worn both and they’re both gorgeous. I’m a D&G fragrance girl so I’m pushing for Rose The One. 😉 It lasts all day, and it smell light, fresh and romantic.
shonda says

Hi Shonda,
Jealous of your pixie cut! I’ve always wanted to try it but am terrified of the growing out process.
So, what’s the story with the cute guy? How do you two know each other?
Shonda says
I’ve tried growing out my pixie once before and it just didn’t work. Besides, short hair suits me better. And the cute guy and I have known each other for a while. We talk just about every day. He’s really sweet and funny.
Karen says
I had a friend do it and it took her FOREVER. I remember her getting pretty grouchy a few times during the growing out process. More power to you and the pixie! Maybe some day I’ll get the guts to give it a try.
As for the cute guy… maybe ask him out to coffee? Perhaps he just needs to a hint to know that yes, you’re into him.

Things you’d like to do before the end of the year?
Finish my internships with the feeling I did a good job. Do the interviews for my final paper for college.

Cool thanks Chris! I love to look at new beauty blogs 🙂
Kim says
1. Mood: Just lovely. Two more days and we’re off to Disney. 🙂
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning? About 20 minutes. I wash and blow dry everyday and my hair is getting kind of long, so it takes a while to dry.
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays? We’ll be gone for Thanksgiving, but everyone comes to our house for Christmas. My parents are only 5 minutes away and the Hubs’ dad is about 3 hours. Btw, congrats on your inlaws moving back to Cali. Bummer on the Hawaiian vacation loss, though!
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week? To think about packing sooner than the night before we leave.
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?†Smell. I actually love the smell of fall. So crisp and fresh with a hint of falling leaves and impending winter.
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately? I’m on my faux cils kick right now.
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages? Oh, heaven’s YES. I’d like to be able to speak everything! Sadly, I don’t have much natural aptitude for languages.
8. Shave, pluck or wax? All 3, depending on the area in question. Shave the body, tweeze the brows and wax the mustache. 🙂
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year? Magically lose 20 lbs. HAHA!
10. Weekly goals: OK, I DO have goals this week. Get the house cleaned (I hate coming home to a messy house), get everything packed for our trip, have a nice b’day dinner for my Mom before we leave; watch and mail back both Netflix movies by Wednesday. I guess those were more “to do” than goals, but it’s a start.
Karen says
FUN!!! Are you going to Disneyland or Disneyworld? Seriously, color me jealous.
Yeah… I’m gonna miss surfing on Christmas day. Sigh.
Kim says
Disneyworld, sadly. I’m just not a Florida fan. Southern California, on the other hand! That said, it’ll be a really fun time and it’s the first for the boys. Nine days of rides and warm weather should be pretty easy to take. 🙂
I’ve never tried my hand at surfing, but still feel your pain. Our next big family vacation is totally going to be Hawaii! After I force them all to drive with me from San Francisco to LA on Hwy 1, of course. 🙂
Karen says
SoCal! You’ll be so near, yet so far!
BTW — there’s a Sephora in the Downtown Disney section. The testers are a hot mess because so many kids go in there and go buck wild, but I do remember seeing some cool lines like Paul & Joe.
One fun thing to do: have lunch at the Blue Bayou restaurant, which is located right next to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. You’ll have to make reservations beforehand, though:
http://disneyland.disney.go.com/disneyland/blue-bayou-restaurant/
You can enjoy a good meal and get out of the sun for a bit, plus, you get to see all the folks in their Pirates boats go by.
Another fun thing: finding the hidden Mickeys!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidden_Mickey
Yay, you guys are gonna have so much fun. 🙂
Faye says
1. Mood:
Grateful that Monday is almost over 🙂
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning?
I wash and blow dry it in the evening, so usually only about 5 minutes in the morning. When you leave the house at 5:30 A.M., you don’t want to spend too much time on hair!
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays?
It will be our first holiday in Hong Kong! My in-laws and parents will be coming to spend a week there. It’s supposed to be a surprise, but my family’s not too good at those (usually because I do all the holiday organizing). I’m looking forward to celebrating with people I know, and meeting some new ones too!
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week?
There’s a new yoga/ballet hybrid class at my gym that’s looking interesting.
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?â€
Equestrienne-inspired boots! (3 words, I know)
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately?
YSL mascara in brown — didn’t think anything could replace my beloved discontinued Lancome, but this really makes my paler-than-pale lashes defined!
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages?
Well not to brag, but I do :). Besides English, I’m fluent in French, German, Spanish, and Hebrew. I’m pretty decent in Arabic, and am studying Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese. The latter two are definitely putting me on a learning curve! I wish I was better visually, because the written characters are so difficult for me.
8. Shave, pluck or wax?
Wax or shave, depends on the season, length of time since last hair removal, etc. . .
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year?
Meet at least 5 new couples I think my husband I could be friends with in our new country; get to know my new neighborhood, or at least some good places to shop.
10. Weekly goals:
Wrap up and send Christimas/Chanukah presents to my American friends and family (I bought them last week).

Can you order food yet in Mandarain and Cantonese? I might need you to teach me, LOL!

7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages? I would love to speak Spanish fluently
8. Shave, pluck or wax? Shave
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year? Secure a job

Karen says
Good luck with the job hunt, Joy, and have a good week!
Advah says
1. Mood: PMSing! That should say it all.

3. Do you have any plans for the holidays? Visiting my parents (and five cats) for a bit over two weeks. I just can’t wait.
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week? Sticking to at least half a Jillian (Michaels) and a short, lukewarm shower every day. And one hour a day of work on that new interpreting class I’ve just started.
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?†The different light at sunset!
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately? My new Graphite Shimmer Bobbi Brown gel liner!
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages? I love languages! I’m planning on brushing up on some forgotten stuff (been saying that for a year) and right now I’d love to learn Croatian for whatever reason. And Swedish.
8. Shave, pluck or wax? Wax and epilate, but pluck on facial hair!
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year? Lose that damn cellulite that’s preventing me from zipping up the jeans and get into a yoga headstand.
10. Weekly goals: Handle the PMS (not doing well so far) and eat reasonably despite said PMS. And just give myself a break. 🙂
Happy Monday everyone!
Melissa says
Sretno sa hrvatskom jeziku! Croatian is my 1st language and I love it 🙂 glad to know someone else would like to learn!
Advah says
Woop! 😀 I’m struggling to find a class but I’ll take that as a sign I should keep looking!
Karen says
Ya know, I just realized that I’ve never had Croatian food. Maybe that should be my next goal. 🙂
Shannon says
1. Mood: pretty chill. Watching 30 Rock and packing for a trip.
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning? I just got a haircut and we’re still making peace with each other, so right now it’s about 20 minutes. Usually it’s less.

Good luck on the GRE’s, Shannon. You’re gonna rock that test!
Kimberly says
1. Mood:
Tired, as per usual!
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning?
No time at all! I have an early morning class, so I can’t be bothered to do anything with it. I usually just get up, look in the mirror, judge the status of my hair… And then either let it do it’s own thing, or put it in a ponytail. Easy peasy.
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays?
Part of my family will be getting together at my sister’s house. I’ll probably be making some sort of pumpkin mousse, yum!
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week?
I’m really in to frozen yogurt lately, so I would like to try some more flavors!
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?â€
…..What’s *not* to love about fall? First word is “weather”, second is “leaves.” It’s just so perfect and beautiful, without being too cold or too warm. 🙂
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately?
TheBalm Muppets Palette. It’s a bit of a surprise, since I wasn’t intending on purchasing it and in the end I LOVE it!
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages?

8. Shave, pluck or wax?
Shave and pluck!
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year?
Start volunteering! I’d really like to give back to my community and start making positive changes around town, even if they are very small ones. 🙂
10. Weekly goals:
Complete/submit some scholarship/volunteer applications. Study for Italian, finish *all* of my homework on time, and keep it all together!

7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages? just better French
8. Shave, pluck or wax? all of the above, when time allows
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year? get organized!
10. Weekly goals: write, laugh and dance
Karen says
Great goals, Brett. 🙂 Have a wonderful week!
Melissa says
1. Mood: Happy – just realized it’s 2:30! This day is flying by
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning? About 10 mins lately. I’ve been throwing a few wide barrel curls in my hair, shaking it out, smoothing, spraying and out the door!
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays? Staying home sweet home this year. After the debacle of last Christmas with 5 families joining for one Christmas. The definition of chaos.
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week? Getting to bed earlier. Crazy I know!
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?†Sweaters!
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately? Maybelline’s Dream Mousse blush. I have a peach and pink color and they give a pretty, natural flush without being overbearing.
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages? YES! When I’m walking by those kiosks in the mall where they want you to try some dead sea salt spa foot lotion or some other crap, I wish I could speak like Polish or something and tell them I don’t understand English in Polish. Then they would stop talking (selling) to me. Right now I just pretend I’m in a fight with somebody on the phone, most of them won’t try and interrupt me 🙂
8. Shave, pluck or wax? Shave & pluck
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year? Finish knitting the scarf I started for my little girl for Christmas. I always try and make at least one thing. I made her a Curious George snuggie for Christmas last year. JoAnne’s craft store and I are BFFs.
10. Weekly goals:
Put my resume out to at least 3 jobs. This place is making me crazayyy!
Have a good week everybody 🙂
Karen says
That Curious George Snuggie sounds adorable, Melissa! I kind of want one, LOL!
What jobs are you looking at? Are you staying in your same field, or trying something new?
Melissa says
…hey, ya know when you want something that they don’t make, you gotta make it yourself 🙂 My baby wanted Curious George so Curious George she received. Even today she will tell everybody that I made it. It really does mean something when you make something by hand. Job wise, I’m looking in the same field of admin, but I’m a government contractor so I always have the fear when my contract runs out of renewal. I need something more stable and permanent. Have a great week Karen!
Karen says
That is so cute. I wish I was skilled enough to make something like that by hand. I’d be making adult size snuggies left and right! Of course they’d have to have cat prints on them. 🙂 Your daughter is very lucky!
I worked for a long time in admin. It’s a good field; you get to help people, plus there’s always jobs available and most of the time you get to leave work at work. I hope you find something more permanent that you enjoy!
Katherine G says
1. Mood:
~Happy now. Was a little sad this morning, probably because of the weather. Happy because my childhood toy train is up and running, and will be my Christmas Tree train.
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning?
~Anywhere from 2 to 20 minutes. Since I’ve been keeping my wavy/straight rather thick hair longer and in long layers, it’s been more manageable. It’s harder to deal with when freshly washed (that’s when it doesn’t want to be flat ironed, wants to be frizzy or staticky, etc.). Most of the time it’s pulled back or braided in some way for the job.
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays?
~I am actually hosting Thanksgiving this year (just my parents, my fiance’s parents, and my little brother), and my fiance and I are working on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week?
~A new form of exercise. I need to get motivated again.
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?â€
~Leaves. I love all the colors of the fall leaves 🙂
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately?
~My Nars blush in Orgasm. It never fails to make me look more awake and well rested, as well as not anemic, hahaha.
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages?
~Yes, I do wish I was fluent in Spanish and Italian, rather than knowing phrases here and there. I also think that being fluent would help with different job stuff.
8. Shave, pluck or wax?
~Shaving, and plucking, almost never have time to wax, and I find it frustrating to do on my own.
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year?
~A getaway of sorts with my fiance (don’t know where, and don’t know if it would happen), and finish out my classes strong.
10. Weekly goals:
~do some form of exercise, get all my schoolwork done before the weekend, and make sure I have everything for Thanksgiving.
Karen says
That’s cool that you’re hosting this year, Katherine. What are you cooking?
Katherine G says
Turkey (an 18 pounder), stuffing (in and out of the turkey), brown sugar carrots, Chi Chi’s corn cake, green beans with bacon and almonds, and real mashed taters 🙂 Have a happy Thanksgiving!
Karen says
NICE. Can I come over? LOL, just kidding. I love hearing about what people are making. Would you believe that I’ve never cooked a turkey before? One of these days I need to cross that off my list…
Have fun cooking, and happy (early) Thanksgiving!
Alyssa says
1. Mood: Happy/tired

3. Do you have any plans for the holidays? Hanging with my brother’s new baby girl….and tons of shopping!
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week? Eating eggs for breakfast. I’m such a wimp when it comes to eating eggs.
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?†the clothes!
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately? black eyeliner
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages? I do…sorta. So I which I could speak them better.

9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year? Clean out my overflowing closet.
10. Weekly goals: Clean up my shoe-rack, blog a bit, and visit the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Arts
Karen says
Hi Alyssa,
That exhibit sounds like it’s going to be amazing!
Saffron says
1. Mood:
Blissed out like a mofo. Been dating a guy who has all kinds of The One potential for.. going on 3 months now? Getting cozy and it is AWESOME.
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning?
Less than a minute on work days, I just wear it up in a french twist. Up to half an hour when going out if I’m doing fancy stuff like liberty rolls.
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays?
I don’t have fam to worry about so I plan on taking the bf on a trip for thanksgiving, part urban luxury retreat and part volcano spelunking adventure. I suffer.

Being at home. Seriously, I can’t remember the last night I didn’t go out.
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?â€
Rain. The early dark is difficult to bear but the sparkle of all the lights off of every (constantly) wet surface is gorgeous.
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately?
MAC Pro Longwear concealer, which I owe to YOU Ms Karen. I don’t have a good color match in MAC but I am willing to sacrifice and imperfect match for UNBELIEVABLE wear and no creasing.
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages?
If only I could wish it. I’m fluent in ASL, which is handy in noisy bars… If I ever wanted to move to a brainier, more progressive place, it’d be handy to know a scandanavian language.
8. Shave, pluck or wax?
Depends on where I’m launching the attack. ><
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year?
Get my apartment in order – I have way more clutter than I'm comfortable with and stuff piling up. Need to destufify without reducing recreation and hobby stuff unduly. Get work in order – I'm training on so many things at once that I'm getting scattered, I need to allow myself time to focus on getting focused.
10. Weekly goals:
Work towards both of the above, get prepped for hosting a party saturday.
have a good one ya'll!
Karen says
You have a good one too, Saffron! What’s the occasion for the party on Saturday?
Tammy says
1. Mood: Good. Excited. Happy!
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning? About a minute. I brush it, I twist my bangs away from my face, pin them, and call it a day.
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays? I’m going to Thailand! Haven’t been in 8 years and I’m so excited!
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week? Learn how to use iMovie. I just got my first MacBook Pro!
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?â€
I second the pie! Sweet potato, pumpkin, pecan…yum.
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately? Meow Cosmetics Pampered Puss Foundation. Cheaper, bigger and better than BareMinerals. Yeah, I said it!
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages? I want to brush up on my Thai. I also want to learn Spanish, Mandarin, Italian, French, and Korean.
8. Shave, pluck or wax? Mainly shave and pluck
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year? Learn a few Korean phrases as since I’ll moving to S. Korea next year.
10. Weekly goals: Get the hang of my Mac, start tracking my budget again, and try not to get sick!
Karen says
How exciting that you’re going to Thailand! I’ve always wanted to go and eat my way through the country. 🙂 How long will you be there?
gio says
1. Mood: ok
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning? no time at all. I just don’t do anything with it lol.
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays? not yet
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week? hanging out with my friends
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?†the leaves changing color
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately? Neve cosmetics blush in summertime. It gives such a nice glow to skin.
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages? yes, I’d love to learn French.
8. Shave, pluck or wax? shave.
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year? go on holiday.
10. Weekly goals: get some rest!
Karen says
Get some good rest this week, Gio!
Katie says
1. Mood: Surprisingly ready for the week! I think I say this every Monday Poll, and it becomes the opposite by Friday, LOL.
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning? Like, three minutes! I don’t do ANYTHING to my hair, and it works! It’s naturally straight, thick hair that I just comb in the morning or tie up in a ponytail. I always air-dry after washing it. Other than shampoo & conditioner, I use only one product to tame frizzies – Bedhead After Party.
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays? I am going back to the Bay Area when my Winter Break starts, and I plan to do nothing but veg out! I have no specifics for Xmas or New Year’s.
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week? Go without ice cream three times this week. (College life, yo.)
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?†Fashion (or cooler weather).
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately? I haven’t gotten new m/u in months, but, I’ve really been loving my Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel. It’s a lifesaver for my oily skin every fall/winter.
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages? I speak Vietnamese and French, and I wish I could speak them more fluently.
8. Shave, pluck or wax? I shave my legs, pluck my brows, but I stay away from waxing. I can’t do it on my face because of Retin-A, and it seems time-consuming for body.
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year? Begin my extensive reading list, organize/update my wardrobe (I really need new clothes – summer/winter, basics, pretty much everything).
10. Weekly goals: Do research for a group project, get ahead on some course reading, exercise at least three times this week.
Obligatory Walking Dead comments, Karen!!
1) The conversation between Rick and Shane about finding Sophia was difficult. I am conflicted about whether or not finding her is holding down the rest of the group!
2) I loved all the screen time they gave Daryl. What a trooper! (Look at his hot survival man muscles.) I’m also beginning to understand why he’s so involved in finding Sophia – like Sophia, Merle’s fate is pretty much unknown, too, so he identifies with Carol.
3) I knew there was something a bit dark about Herschel! Why do you think he’s keeping all those walkers?
4) The show needs MORE ZOMBIES! Is it just me, or is this season lackluster with the characters growing whiny and impractical?
Karen says
Hi Katie,
SO… zombies.
The last episode was probably my favorite one from the season so far, mostly because I yelled, “OH NOOOOO!” about ten times. Daryl is one tough mo’ fo’. I am really enjoying his character and am so glad that that trigger happy woman did not shoot him.
I’m with you on this season feeling very different from the last. It’s seems like the writers have been playing more with intellectual discussions rather than just straight up action. I love it when shows don’t assume you’re dumb, but not gonna lie — I could use a LOT more zombies and edge of your seat “OH NOOOO!” moments.
Did you hear about Frank Darabont leaving the show? I think that has a lot to do with how this new season feels.
Christine says
1. Mood: Relaxed!
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning? No time at all – I shower and blow dry at night, and when I wake up in the morning, I just run my fingers through my hair and use Bedhead Manipulator.
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays? Not really, just family.
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week? NARS cream blush.
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?†Wearing BOOTS!
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately? Chanel Perfection Lumiere Foundation
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages? I’m bilingual – but I wish I could speak French.
8. Shave, pluck or wax? Thread and pluck.
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year? Get my spring cleaning started early.
10. Weekly goals: For once in my life, I’m all caught up and bit a head. But, I’d love to get to the gym a bit more this week.
Karen says
Glad to hear that you’re caught up and even a bit ahead, Christine. You’re my inspiration! I hope to be in the same place by the end of the week.
thecandiedmango says
1. Mood: stressed/exhausted. Strexhausted?
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning? usually less than five minutes, unless my bangs are going crazy.
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays? Spending it with three families: husband’s mom, my dad’s side and my mom’s side. That’s how it is for EVERY holiday.
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week? Err… start exercising again, I guess. Hopefully it will help my anxiety levels.
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?†Crunching leaves! (two words, my bad)
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately? ELF Eyelid Primer. It actually works pretty well for me.
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages? Of course!
8. Shave, pluck or wax? Pluck my brows, shave the rest. I’d like to get an epilator sometime soon.
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year? Finish this semester of college and the first draft of my comic book script.
10. Weekly goals: write that paper I’ve been putting off.
Karen says
Wow, that’s a LOT of family for the holidays. Does everyone live relatively close?
Linnea says
1. Mood: Good. A little out of it(I had a 4 day weekend, so monday is pretty hard to get back into!)
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning? Oh man. Anywhere from 2-45 minutes. I try to be optimistic everytime I’m “going for it”.. I say oh this will only take 15-25 minutes.. hecks no. I just have too much hair. So usually 2 minutes = comb, and pop in a bun. Usually 15 minutes to blowdry if I choose, and 45+ if curling/straightening/hot rollers are involved.
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays? Family! My family usually comes to my hometown(where my parents live), so we usually just celebrate and try to see eachother as much as possible. That being said, this is the first year that I will live in a different house, and that my boyfriend isn’t going to be with me(he’s travelling with his family to visit more family).
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week? Not new — but I’d like to get back to working out at home. I’ve neglected it because I have some classes to go to, but all but one has ended, and I have my doctors appointment next week, so its high time to try to work out at least 4 times.
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?†Leaves! they’re all gone by now where I live, but I love the different colours/textures that the leaves add to fall.
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately? Benefit Bad Girl Mascara! somehow I got my hands on a minitube.. and I love it. Nothing too extreme, but exactly what I need for the daytime.
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages? Yes! French, Spanish, Italian, all for different reasons: French, as everyone thinks I should speak it already as I am from Canada. Spanish because I work with a bunch of Spanish speaking people.. Italian because hell.. its sexy, and I would love to go back to the country and be able to navigate properly!
8. Shave, pluck or wax? All. Shave most of the time, pluck the eyebrows(wax isn’t allowed around my eyebrows — just too messy, and not worth it). Wax — I keep trying to wax myself, but hell! I cannot for the life of me pull something off of my body(lets just make it clear–I have problems with bandaids). I do like getting waxed. I plan to get some laser hair removal for my pits and pubes, and be done with it!
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year? lose 5 pounds, and buy a freezer(random, I know, but it would be really nice to have a full freezer)
10. Weekly goals: Work out 4 times, drink more water(I’ve fallen off the wagon again!) and clean my life — ie car, apartment, everything!!
Karen says
Hi Linnea,
Good luck with the at-home workouts this week. What are you planning on doing? DVDs?
Shannon says
1. Mood:
Not too excited to be back in the office after the 3-day weekend. I can’t wait for Thanksgiving break and then Christmas!
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning?
Depends on what I’m doing. If I shower, it’s usually takes about 10 minutes to blowdry. If it’s dirty, I usually spend between 5 and 15 minutes trying to cajole it into not looking too greasy.
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays?
Goin to visit the man’s family this Christmas! I’m bummed that we’ll be on the other side of the country to my family, but I’m looking forward to spending time with his parents. They’re pretty cool people.
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week?
I really, really don’t want to try anything new this week. Vehemently. I want to work on the things I’ve already started, like the papers I’m theoretically going to apply to grad school with.
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?â€
trees! and those couple days where’s it’s not too hot but not too cold and it just feels crisp outside.
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately?
Does a makeup brush count? I got the medium fluffy eyeshadow brush by Sonia Kashuk, and I really love how sheerly it applies pigmented colors. I like to keep things low-key, especially for the daytime, and it has made a bunch of different colors WAY more wearable. I freakin love the thing!
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages?
Yup. I wish I could speak French, and maybe German. And I wish I could speak Spanish more fluently than I am currently able.
8. Shave, pluck or wax?
Eyebrows are plucked. Everything else I usually shave. I’ve been epilating it up lately, though.
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year?
Actually apply to grad school, lose about 2 or 3 pounds, and get A’s in my classes.
10. Weekly goals:
To get enough sleep and, when I’m not sleeping, to bust my @ss on homework and applications.
Karen says
Sonia’s brushes are tops! Did you get the one with the black or the white handle?

If you want to use your coconut milk to make curry, use the Mae Ploy brand. If you want to make mango with coconut sticky rice, use tapioca flour or tapioca starch to thicken the coconut milk before adding it to the steamed sticky rice. Have fun cooking!
Karen says
Reading this just made me totally hungry.
Olga says
Thank you very much for the advice, Wendy! I was actually going to cook a seafood soup… Not really sure, if this wil be an authentically Thai food, but a friend’s Mom does it, and I love her recipe :-). I will check out whether this brand, Mae Ploy, is available where I live, which is Spain.

And sorry for the mess up in the comments, Karen! This entry is the first time I comment here, so I have not yet exactly figured out, how to reply to whom and where. 🙂
Karen says
No worries, Olga! Just do the best you can and it’ll get sorted out. It always does! Have a great week.

4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week?

Clothes! The weather changes enough that you can pull from your summer or winter clothes, and there’s just so much you can do. 🙂
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately?
My mattene lipstick from the posh paradise collection. I looove the color, it makes me look so put together. We sold out at my store but I’m thinking of checking around to see if i can get a backup, a rare “thinking ahead” investment for me!
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages?
As many as possible! Lol. I love to travel and I’d honestly like to speak as many as possible. In particular I want to learn Italian (once I’m solidly fluent in french, I don’t want to risk confusing romance languages!) and I wish I knew Spanish, because it comes up so much. I haven’t tried Groupon yet, but I’ve heard good things about it. I just get so much e-mail now that I feel that signing up for one more thing will make my mailbox explode you know? Do you save a lot of money using it? ‘Cause if you do maybe I’ll give it a go.
Brandi Andi says
1. Mood: tired, relaxed
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning? It really depends. Usually about 3 minutes unless I actually decide to straighten it. 10. Weekly goals: Do homework before the weekend and go to the gym!
Karen says
That’s great that you’re embracing your wavy hair, Brandi. Something similar happened to me a few years ago. I straightened mine every day, but then I eventually decided to start wearing it natural (saves so much time!).
What products do you use when you wear it wavy?
Brandi Andi says
Yeah, it saves me tim and my hair is a lot healthier. I just comb my hair out with a wide tooth comb, wait for it to dry just a bit, and then add some Aveda Be Curly (or whatever new curly/wavy hair product that I like at the time). After it dries I like to smooth down the frizz with Bed Head’s After Party. That is really about it!
Some days I love spending time straightening my hair, but it is nice to actually be comfortable with my natural style!
What hair products do you use when you wear your hair naturally?
Karen says
My routine is similar to yours. I use a wide tooth comb to loosen the waves and distribute whatever product I’m using at the time, and then I let it air dry. Right now I apply Phyto 7 from mid-shaft to ends for light hold and moisture and Bumble & Bumble Brilliantine on the ends and my bangs for shine and weight. I like the look; it’s funny, not too “done, and very soft!
I know what you mean about liking to wear it straight, though. Sometimes it’s just easier, like when it’s windy, or when I’m traveling and don’t have time to fuss with it.
Yay for having the option to wear your hair both curly and straight! 😀
Shannon Mackey says
Today is a great day!!! My birthday is today and I just turned 25. Yay, hope everyone else is having a fantastic day.
Karen says

Wow, that’s really cool how your friend can speak so many languages. I guess he has that special gift! I would love to even learn just one more.
Have fun baking your Thanksgiving desserts. Do you make everything from scratch (even the crust)?
Wendy says
He must have been born with that gift! He’s the quiet type. That probably helps him listen and learn.
Yes, I use my grandmother’s cheesecake recipe that calls for 5 eggs! It takes forever to set it and is so dense. My family won’t even eat the cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory because it doesn’t even come close to my grandmother’s recipe. As for pie crust, it depends on the time I have. I use a recipe I found from Cooks Illustrated over a decade ago.
Have fun at yoga!
Karen says
Cooks Illustrated is the bomb.com. I thought I was the only person who read it! 🙂
And holy wow that cheesecake sounds rich. I wish you could send me a slice through the computer, haha.

While I’m doing this as a Tuesday post, I’m good. Very good – just found out I’m getting a much-needed scholarship for my last semester at PSU!
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning?
Oh man. I shower/wash hair at night, so that the morning time doesn’t take as long. But, if I actually style my hair in the AM anything past just throwing it up in a claw or tieback, I would say that it takes maybe 15 mins. LONG hair and lots of layers.

I do speak other languages, but I would like to add Russian, Chinese, and Italian to it (I understand Italian and can read it, but cannot speak it – same with French. weird, huh?)

Hi Karen!
I’m a little late answering the Monday poll, but below are my responses. Hope you’re having a great week!
1. Mood: Moody and Cranky, but trying to stay on an even-keel.
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning? 5-8 minutes. I blow dry. Sometimes, if I’m feeling daring, I’ll even flatiron, but I save that for when I have important meetings/presentations at work. I don’t like to flatiron too much, as my hair is overprocessed and colored and tends to be on the dry side these days.
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays? None at all and I’m feeling very good about it. Hubby and I will have Thanksgiving and Christmas all to ourselves unless some cool invites arrive. Otherwise, we’re on our own with some Prosecco. 🙂
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week? Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?†Sweaters!
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately? NYX Creme Blush in 02 Natural. It’s light, creamy, and touch-ups are quick. The color is very nice.
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages? Yes, Russian.
8. Shave, pluck or wax? I’m a shave and tweeze girl.
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year? Organize my shoe collection and find more fall sweaters and slacks for work.
10. Weekly goals: Remembering to take my daily vitamins and limit the chocolate and other sweets I’m craving.
