- You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 170. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
- What are you wearing?
- What’s one song you absolutely cannot stand?
- Are you happy with your height?
- Of all the places you’ve been, what are some of your favorites?
- Something that comes easily to you?
- Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay?
- What are the keys to success?
- Imagine you’re at an awesome summer barbeque. Describe what we’d find on your perfect lunch plate.
- Weekly goals:
Super excited! So much so that my heart is beating like a hummingbird’s. Next week I’ll finally be able to share the so-far secret details about that Toronto trip I took earlier this spring, and I seriously can’t wait!
My black skinny jeans; a black floral print top with a gray, khaki and beige print; a gray button-down cardigan; black platform sandals; a black Dakine purse that I got from Marshalls for, like, $15 (SCORE!); and gold heart-shaped hoops.
Oh, and I know it’s not technically part of the outfit, but I’m also toting around a lint brush to periodically pull kitty fur from the black pants. They’re like magnets for the stuff!
Ugh, Birthday Sex. As soon as I hear the first few bars, one of my eyelids starts to twitch.
I wouldn’t mind being a little taller… Forget that — I wish I was a baller! Okay, so maybe not a baller, but I’d take a few extra inches if they were offered. 🙂 I’m only 5’1”, but in my mind I’m epically tall, like 5’6”, LOL!
San Diego for the mellow vibe, comfortable climate and beaches; Paris for…well, just about everything — the museums, the romance, the food (!); New York for many of the same reasons as Paris; and Hawaii for the beaches, the people, the trade winds and the rainbow of colors everywhere.
Hmm…buying shoes? But seriously, maybe writing, at least most of the time, except for bouts of writer’s block (when they hit, they hit HARD). Oh, and running isn’t too hard for me, not that I run very far or fast, but once I get going I’m like a hamster on a wheel!
I used to think they were tacky, but not anymore. They make great conversation starters at gatherings and parties.
You tell me. I don’t know if there really are any skeleton keys that work the same way for everyone. I like to think that there are lots of different ways to reach goals, but tenacity, kindness and occasional episodes of good luck rarely hurt.
Also, as I’ve gotten older, and this is just as disappointing as it is true, but it also seems like the whole “It’s not what you know, but who you know” thing comes into play more often than not.
Roasted, salted corn on the cob topped with melted butter (NOM!), potato salad, Hawaiian-style macaroni salad, chips and a veggie hot dog with lots of ketchup and relish…and maybe also a scoop of steamed rice and a few grilled shrimp (ya know, if there’s any room left on the plate).
To stick to my deadlines (something I wasn’t very good about last week); to run at least four miles, three times before Saturday; and to carve out some extra play time with Tabs every day. According to that Jackson Galaxy guy, play is very important for happy kitties.
Hello, hello, and happy Monday, pretty. 🙂 Wow, I feel weirdly great today. Almost manic. I think it might have to do with the stretching I started doing first thing in the morning, but I don’t know. I’m not naturally a flexible person, and I don’t do any upside-down crazy yoga poses or stuff like that, just a few basic leg, arm and back stretches for a few minutes before I get out of bed. It really gets the blood flowing.
- To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

4. Are you happy with your height? I used to want to be shorter (I’m about 5ft 7″) as it was quite difficult to find pants in the right length, where I come from, but after awhile I got used to it. Moving to Scandinavia kind of proved that I am anything but tall 🙂
5. Of all the places you’ve been, what are some of your favorites? I love London – there’s something about it that makes me want to keep going back again and again. Of course the wide shopping range does help. I also loved San Francisco – the weather, the people, the service, and food. My vacation to San Francisco was the only vacation when I came home sad. Usually I am more than happy to be home and get back to work. But this time, I was quite disappointed that the vacation had ended.
6. Something that comes easily to you? Writing. I’m a technical writer by profession so writing kind of has to come easy. My cure for writers’ block is a large latte and a huge piece of brownie. Currently, sweats. That will change if I decide to go out at some point.
3. What’s one song you absolutely cannot stand?
So many to choose from! I guess the last song that was on my radar that couldn’t be turned off fast enough was Fergie’s London Bridge. Love Black Eyed Peas, but her solo stuff, and that song in particular, really really annoyed me!

7. Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay?
Yea, I think they’re fun!
8. What are the keys to success?
Good question. I think it comes down to defining what success means to YOU and not letting it be defined by society or outside influences. If you’re happy and content with your life, and try your best to make a positive difference in the lives of others, that means success to me.

7. Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay? Yay, as long as the rest of your outfit is pretty pared-down. I think they make nice accent pieces. A big, gaudy cocktail ring with a messier, white-tank-and-jeans type of outfit really hits all the right buttons for me.
8. What are the keys to success? I don’t know myself (wish I did), but I feel like when I look at successful people I do know, it seems to be about working as hard as you can (without wearing yourself down to nothing) and putting yourself out there fearlessly again and again (no matter how many times you’ve been shot down).
9. Describe what we’d find on your perfect barbeque lunch plate… A lot of potato salad! And butter rolls! Carb-monster that I am, I don’t crave real BBQ that often (pulled pork and ribs and all that), but I’m a big fan of hamburgers and hot dogs.

3. What’s one song you absolutely cannot stand? Billionaire, by Travie McCoy. It has some of the most ridiculous lyrics, and I always groan when it comes on the radio.
4. Are you happy with your height? When I’m rock climbing, I wish I were taller, so that I could actually REACH the next holds…but otherwise, I’m okay being short-ish (5’3″).
5. Of all the places you’ve been, what are some of your favorites? Annecy, France – beautiful. Paris is on the list, too. But I also really love San Francisco and you know, I love it here, where I live.
6. Something that comes easily to you? Um, I’m usually pretty organized…and I like to plan ahead.

8. What are the keys to success? Determination, and a positive attitude? This is just a minor example, but sometimes I wake up and my face just looks awful, beyond saving with makeup (you know, rough night – a little too much Jameson, or something :P) and then I remember all of those adages about smiling. So I force myself to smile. And things seem a lot better. 🙂

Strange people talk to me very easy. Children, old people, mothers with babies and teenagers. Also when I’m on vacation in another country. And those people just talk to me in their own language, like I’m one of them..
7. Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay?
I like ’em.
8. What are the keys to success?
Luck! I’ve never been lucky in my life.. It doesn’t matter how many perseverance you have and how great your talent is, you just have to have luck. It’s just like doing audition.. I’ve done a lot and I always get comments that I look good, my acting is on a high level and that the role I’m auditioning for fits me very well.. but I’ve done soo many auditions I can’t even count them.. You just have to be lucky to get picked for a role no matter how good you are. I’m not saying I’m good because rejection is the worst you can get, you just feel like a big loser after hearing you got rejected. Even when they say how good you are. And those people don’t lie, they’re straight to the point and if you’re bad, they will say it right into your face.

1. Mood:
HAPPY!!!! The heat finally came to the Midwest. I’m hoping it stays! It’s nice and sunny with a perfect breeze.
2. What are you wearing?
My Victoria Secret Satin Tee-jamas at the moment. I need to get my butt dressed to enjoy the sun!
3. What’s one song you absolutely cannot stand?
The First Cut Is The Deepest by Sheryl Crow. I hate it so bad that I change the radio stations when I hear the first chord.
4. Are you happy with your height?
Some days. It sort of irks me that I’m the shortest adult on both sides of my family. We’re all pretty tall. The shortest on my mom’s side are my mom and the sister she’s closest to (Who, ironically, looks like her twin) at 5’5″; my dad’s side, not including me, it’s my grandma at 5’8″. I’m 5’2.5″. Can we say height disparity? It may be due to autism or CP as studies do show that children with either tend to be shorter than their families. I still would like to fit in though! Can I have just 2.5 more inches God? Please?
5. Of all the places you’ve been, what are some of your favorites?
Fort Huachuca, AZ; Coppers Cove, TX and Fitzsimons (now part of Aurora), CO. I don’t remember Fort Huachuca all that much but I loved that the Rockies were LITERALLY in my backyard. Coppers Cove was the only time we owned a house in all my military kid life and Fitzsimons was amazing. I hated the blasted winters, but the mountains were fantastic (even though they were about 1.5 hours away, I could still see them out my window!)

7. Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay?
No.
8. What are the keys to success?
I don’t know. I think it’s different for everyone because I haven’t figured it out yet. I know how to beat what the doctor’s predicted for my future because my mom taught me that, but I don’t know how to key to success.
9. Describe what we’d find on your perfect barbeque lunch plate…
Nothing that has barbeque on it or anything grilled on it. Food that’s grilled actually makes me sick to my stomach because I can actually taste the metal (and the charcoal, if it were grilled on a charcoal grill) and it upsets my stomach. That means, on my plate there’d be Lays potato chips, a white hot dog bun with butter in it (and nothing else!), seedless grapes, watermelon, sliced Granny Smith Apples, and hamsteak,, if it’s there (yes, I will eat hamsteak as long as it’s cooked in aluminum foil. I affectionately call them “pillows”). Everything would be separated because I can’t stand my food touching each other. Yep, I may need two plates.
10. Weekly goals:
Walk Zena
Give Zena a bath
Enjoy the warm weather!
Brush out Zena! Lately I’ve been noticing balls of fur everywhere! It must be shedding season!

3. What’s one song you absolutely cannot stand?
anything by keisha. srsly.
4. Are you happy with your height?
I’m 6 feet tall and it’s kinda a mixed blessing – I personally like being hella tall and it suits my bombastic personality, but it’s super hard to find clothes that fit (there’s so much more to fit than inseam) and guys, especially pacific northwest white guys, are mortally intimidated by me, so I don’t get as many dates as my shorter friends.
5. Of all the places you’ve been, what are some of your favorites?
I love all of Alaska, especially the coast. I’d move there if I could find a job and I was willing to give up on dating ever again! 😛

Math. Sad but true. I wasn’t popular in high school. 😛
7. Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay?
Oh hell yes, but I’m into big and gaudy as an overall thing. I’m 6 feet tall with big curves, dainty doesn’t work on me.
8. What are the keys to success?
I’m with you on the “who you know” bit, and being able to play the game well enough to get in folks good graces helps a lot. I’ve found that hard work really is important, which is good because I’m very bad at playing the game so I need a backup!

1. Mood: tired, and mostly calm
2. What are you wearing? My fave skinny jeans, a navy blue ruched tunic with elbow-length sleeves, green zip-up hoodie (unzipped) and my green around-the-house flip-flops. I think they’re on their last legs, which is very sad because they’ve been with me faithfully for 4 years now!
3. What’s one song you absolutely cannot stand? At the moment, that horrid “Friday” song. They keep clipping bits of it on the telly and the radio and it makes me want to rip out my hair.
4. Are you happy with your height? Sometimes. I frequently wish I were shorter. I’m nearly 5’8″, and it’s given me something of a complex. The opposite of a rooster complex, I guess. Back in school, it was very “girl power” to be taller than all the boys, but nowadays it’s not so good. I feel like it makes me super shallow, wanting to be shorter than the dudes I date. It doesn’t help that I really like high heels, either – they turn me into a ridiculous Amazon! Although there’s certain advantages, like being able to use all the shelves in my cupboards (my housemate can’t reach the top shelf!).
5. Of all the places you’ve been, what are some of your favorites? Granada, Spain. I lived there for my year abroad, and it just gets in under your skin. Oxford, because it feels like home, and with any luck, will be my home for a long time to come. And Hawai’i, because it was just SO beautiful in an almost unbelievable way.
6. Something that comes easily to you? Research. I’m good at finding things out, and reading about things, and making connections. Turning that research into readable writing, not so much.
7. Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay? Nay. I don’t wear rings, other than my claddagh that I’ve had since I turned 13, so the gaudy jewellery is reserved for my ears and neck!
8. What are the keys to success? Hard work, good support, and (not gonna lie, these always make success that much more achievable) the right connections.
9. Describe what we’d find on your perfect barbeque lunch plate… A veggie burger (preferably on some sort of crusty bread or a wholewheat pita), red pepper strips, hummus, some grilled halloumi, a bit of pasta salad (my friend makes an amazing one with sundried tomatoes and basalmic vinegar… nom!), maybe some baby plum tomatoes and other crunchy little veggies to snack on.
10. Weekly goals: finish my massive stack of reading by Tuesday, spend a little quality time in the library with some Latin chronicles, write a rough draft of my dissertation, ace my paleography practical exam, practice for dance class (and then *go* to dance class), put together at least two blog posts, and ask cute boy for a second coffee date. Strangely, it’s the last item that’s the most intimidating.
Have a great week, everyone!

1. Mood: Nervous and stressed. I have to apply to med schools and be part of a wedding this week. And I still need to perfect my maid of honor speech.
2. What are you wearing? Comfy shorts and a tee.
3. What’s one song you absolutely cannot stand? Red wine by UB40
4. Are you happy with your height? Yes. I only stand at 5′, but I can’t complain.
5. Of all the places you’ve been, what are some of your favorites? San Diego. The weather is perfect and the people are so friendly. And I *love* the beach!
6. Something that comes easily to you? A sense of rhythm; I love to dance!
7. Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay? YEA! I *love* them. I gravitate towards large flower rings.
8. What are the keys to success? Passion and tenacity.
9. Describe what we’d find on your perfect barbeque lunch plate… A burger with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, and a little relish.
10. Weekly goals: To come close to finishing my med school applications. Also, to write and give an entertaining and heartfelt maid of honor speech at my friend’s wedding.

1. Mood: I can’t believe it’s Monday!!!! Other than that, not too bad 🙂
2. What are you wearing? denim skinnies, a black top, gray cardigan and houndstooth rain boots!
3. What’s one song you absolutely cannot stand? Too many, ha! I’m picky.
4. Are you happy with your height? Yes. I’m a tall gal at 5’9″, and I’m cool with it. I used to wish I was shorter, but I embrace it now. I’ve been called things like statuesque and elegant by some shorter ladies, so that really helped me be comfortable with it.
5. Of all the places you’ve been, what are some of your favorites? Switzerland is my fav European country so far, in America it’ll always be New England, though I did like Seattle when I went.
6. Something that comes easily to you? Artsy things. I lovelovelove to draw and paint.
7. Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay? I like ’em!
8. What are the keys to success? Work hard, play hard and network like no other!

1. Mood: super excited for my upcoming Europe/US trip in late October of this year!! Hermes Lindy bag, come to mama!!
2. What are you wearing? A black silk shift dress with black opaque stockings with mary jane shoes.
3. What’s one song you absolutely cannot stand? Anything by Chris Brown (girlfriend basher) or Lady Gaga.
4. Are you happy with your height? Yes. Good things comes in small packages! 😉
5. Of all the places you’ve been, what are some of your favorites? I can’t decide between Capri or San Sebastian. Both have yummy food and fabulous shopping!
6. Something that comes easily to you? Shopping! Career wise? Not sure.
7. Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay? Definite yay! But I wouldn’t have the events to wear them to.
8. What are the keys to success? Passion and motivation. I think you need to be passionate in what you do in order to succeed.
9. Describe what we’d find on your perfect barbeque lunch plate…corn on the cob, my friend’s secret recipe lamb cutlets, my husband’s prawn fritters and chicken
10. Weekly goals: I need to get cracking on my month end journals, get to the gym (weather outside is too wet to cycle in to work this week) and enjoy my free time with my husband and gorgeous doggy!
Btw, what breed is that dog that you have on the top of this post? So cute!!
PS says
1. Mood: Pretty good for a Monday.
2. What are you wearing? White shirt, dark blue jeans and black flats.
3. What’s one song you absolutely cannot stand? Nothing I can think of at the moment.
4. Are you happy with your height? Yes, when I was younger I wanted to be shorter, but in my 20’s I embraced my height and now it doesn’t bother me at all. I think my height is right for me. 🙂
5. Of all the places you’ve been, what are some of your favorites? Hawaii, Tahiti & Fiji
6. Something that comes easily to you? being organized
7. Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay? They’re okay. Cute on some people. However, the only ring that I would want to be good sized is an engagement ring. Especially since I’m not really into jewelry, that would be the one thing I want to be big & sparkly, but not gaudy big/ugly.
8. What are the keys to success? It would really depend on the field and who you ask. But for me success is following through on responsibilities, having the drive for success & being considerate of others even when they lack professionalism
9. Describe what we’d find on your perfect barbecue lunch plate… Yuck, hate barbecue, but I don’t mind a grilled steak that has been marinated.
10. Weekly goals: continue to search for another job, continue to be positive at work despite a crappy work environment & have a good work out week.
Have a wonderful week everyone.
Eileen says
1. Mood: Happy and content
2. What are you wearing? I’ve been working out in the garden so nothing fancy: jeans, light blue shirt, garden clogs, and a sun hat.
3. What’s one song you absolutely cannot stand? “Don’t Worry. Be Happy”
4. Are you happy with your height? I’m 5’4″ but would like a couple more inches.
5. Of all the places you’ve been, what are some of your favorites? Innsbruck, Austria; Paris, France; London, England; Vancouver, British Columbia. The list could go on forever!
6. Something that comes easily to you? I’m a great story teller
7. Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay? Big and gaudy as in something from Walmart is a nay. Big and gaudy as in something from Chanel or Dior is a yea.
8. What are the keys to success? Perseverance, patience, self-confidence, selflessness, passion, enthusiasm, optimism tempered by realism, the ability to roll with the punches . . .
9. Describe what we’d find on your perfect barbeque lunch plate…A Prager veggie burger on a toasted whole wheat bun with lettuce, tomato, and dill pickle, just a spoonful of homemade
Southern-style potato salad and Bush’s Southern Pit Barbecue Grillin’ Beans on the side. Fruit for dessert–much, much later!

!
Instant Karma says
1. Mood: Happy, but sleepy! I’m watching some TV and catching up on the grand interwebs with Tigger before going to bed
2. What are you wearing? PJs, lol. I’m in shorts and a big sleep shirt that has Koko the gorilla and her first kitten on it. So cute!
3. What’s one song you absolutely cannot stand? Oh GOD, that “I Get Knocked Down” song makes me practically start twitching. It’s so, so bad. I do not care that you can get back up again, Chumbawumba. I really wish you would just stay down and stop singing.
4. Are you happy with your height? Yes, although at a leggy 5’11,” it is REALLY difficult for me to find pants, lol. However, I like that I can easily see over crowds. It’s useful!
5. Of all the places you’ve been, what are some of your favorites? Scotland is amazing. Edinburgh is like a smaller, cleaner version of London, and the Scottish countryside is quite possibly the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. Also, Pompeii is so fascinating. I visited when I was really young and I’d love to go back!
6. Something that comes easily to you? I’m very good spatially, so I can rotate 3D objects in my head and I’m really good with directions. My friends in high school would refer to me as “Queen Onstar,” lol. Also, as a singer (yay opera!), I remember song lyrics really easily. I know the words to just about every single classic rock song of importance that exists. It’s fun, but not the best superpower ever. I’d prefer the ability to teleport or something. 😀
7. Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay? Yea! I just got a few from Etsy, and they’re gorgeous — and they were really cheap, too (all under $20)! If you get wire wrapped ones, you can get them in custom sizes, which is good for my scrawny little fingers, haha.
8. What are the keys to success? Do what you love; success comes more easily if you enjoy your work. Work hard, but take time to relax and to be with the people (or cats) you love so that you don’t go nuts! Don’t beat yourself up too much when you make mistakes: strive to do better. Finally, believe in yourself, and don’t be too concerned with naysayers. To put it less politely, screw anyone who says you can’t accomplish your goals, lol.
9. Describe what we’d find on your perfect barbeque lunch plate…
Oh God, now I want barbecue. I’d want a mountain of pulled chicken with spicy barbecue sauce, and a bunch of delicious sides, like corn on the cob, some seriously good grilled veggies, and some tasty fries (you know, the ones that are fried not once, but twice). I sadly haven’t found a great place in or near the District for barbecue. I need to venture down south again!
10. Weekly goals:
– Get a good amount of work done.
– Unpack from visiting one of my best friends for her law school graduation.
– Pet cats (I always accomplish this goal).
– Make DSW returns.
– Try to avoid buying 89579283 new pairs of shoes while making said returns. 89579282, on the other hand, would be acceptable :D.

2. What are you wearing?
Victoria’s Secret The Little Tee Dress 😀
3. What’s one song you absolutely cannot stand?
That Crazy Frog song. Ugh.
4. Are you happy with your height?
I’m about 5’2 give or take, and while I wish I could be taller sometimes (Clothes can be very unforgiving to short people at times), there are people much shorter than I am (Seriously) so I guess I should be thankful.
5. Of all the places you’ve been, what are some of your favorites?
I quite like Singapore for it’s environment (Not so the people though, no offense), but I like every place I’ve travelled to so far because it’s a different experience every time! 🙂
6. Something that comes easily to you?
Writing, I guess, but I have to able to get started first before everything comes pouring onto the paper or keyboard. Ideas also seem to come easily to me, especially when I’m showering, and reading (Both books and people) come easily to me too.
7. Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay?
I guess it depends on the ring itself- I feel that the ones with the obviously fake plastic “gems” are just gaudy, but the better made ones are very beautiful.
8. What are the keys to success?
I believe there isn’t one… but for sure hard work, passion and determination would make you successful in whatever you put your heart in 🙂
9. Describe what we’d find on your perfect barbeque lunch plate…
Lamb chops, beef, chicken breasts, egg salad, my Dad’s lobster salad, grilled corn with butter.
10. Weekly goals:

I know! I’m late.. my excuse is yesterday was a holiday here..
1. Mood: Tired. My whole body seems a little, well, off. My stomach isn’t super happy atm, my allergies are just making great friends with my whole head, and the allergy pill that I took to take care of them is just making me a bit loopy. Also, it seems like all the problems today are hard hard hard.
2. What are you wearing? Jeans, a cute new bra I got at VS this weekend(if it wasn’t new, I wouldn’t be pointing it out, I swear!), a tank top, button up dress shirt and a sweater as it is COLD here (like 5 C ~ 41 F)
3. What’s one song you absolutely cannot stand? Paralyzer by Finger Eleven. Can. Not. Stand.
4. Are you happy with your height? Yes. I think I was a slow sprouter because when I was younger, I was picked on for my height.. but I didn’t really care about my height back then or now..
5. Of all the places you’ve been, what are some of your favorites? Barcelona. Amsterdam. Victoria, BC.

7. Big, gaudy cocktail rings — yea or nay? Yea!
8. What are the keys to success? I don’t think theres a magic bullet. But a big one for me is keep whats important to you important. If you’re going after something that is important to someone else, its a waste of time. It won’t make you happy. And get your own definition of Success! And let it change if it needs to!
9. Describe what we’d find on your perfect barbeque lunch plate…Hmm. Salads! Pasta, Green, Greek, Quinoa, Chickpea, any salad. Homeade burger. Corn on the cob. Grilled pineapple and other fruits/veggies.

Karen if you love big lashes you gotta love big rings!!!!!! 🙂
Karen I scheduled a little make up session this Friday at MAC so I could pick up some Surf Baby items. It was free with a 50 dollar purchase. I was wondering is tipping the make up artist something you should do?
Thanks! Paige
Karen says
Hi Paigest,
They don’t expect you to tip, but scheduling an appointment usually has an unwritten rule of picking up something for the artist’s time. Let me know if I can answer any more questions about Surf Baby or anything else for you! 🙂
