- You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 156. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
- When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head?
- What are you reading right now?
- One of the best times in your life?
- Have you ever had a gel manicure?
- Three simple pleaures?
- Whom do you call when you need advice?
- A recent happy moment?
- Are you a red dress kinda girl?
- Weekly goals:
Relaxed and focused.
Stress for me usually means I’ve got several big projects converging at once. When that happens, I pour out everything I need to get done on a single piece of paper — like written diahrrea! — and organize it into lists. Then, I pick one of the lists and tackle just three items on it, starting with either the most urgent issue or whatever I can get done the fastest. That way I start to build some momentum, which helps keep me focused enough to press on.
The Best Food Writing of 2010, edited by Holly Hughes. It’s a compilation of some of last year’s greatest hits in food writing. Who knew there was such controversy surrounding the point at which you salt your meat?? Even though I don’t consider myself a foodie, I still love to read about good food.
1998 was a great year. I was 23, a senior in college and single, and I finally found a group of girls I really clicked with (love you El, Mar and Chris!). On top of everything, I was also in pretty good shape. Ah, to be a size zero and 23 again…
Nope, but I’d like to. They’re specialized manicures where they cure each layer of polish under a UV light for a few minutes after application. It’s supposed to result in fast-drying, sturdy enamel that can last up to 14 days or longer.
I don’t know… Because I’m always swatching, I need to have my fingers bare at a moment’s notice, and I don’t want to spend $45 on a gel mani that I’d then had to remove before its time.
1) Waking up to find Tabs sleeping next to me, 2) the spicy chai latte at the Nordstrom Espresso Bar and 3) sunny 70-degree days.
Ghostbusters! LOL, just kidding. My friends from childhood (Jen and Cindy), my brother and El Hub.
Last Saturday I went hiking in Indian Valley, which is a hilly nature preserve not far from here in Novato. On the walk I wandered into a shaded grotto of oak trees. The wind was rustling through the branches up above, and the leaves crunched beneath my feet. What a peaceful, wonderful little moment.
Heck, yeah! And throw in high-heeled red pumps while you’re at it, por favor.
To practice staying in the moment.
Happy Monday to ya. 🙂 I trust you’re feeling rested? I actually slept really well last night (shocker!).
Kinda random, but while I was sipping on a mug of green tea this morning I got to thinking about focusing on the “now.” It’s something I’d like to get better at doing. Every day last week I felt like I woke up, parked my bum down in front of the computer and got lost typing away. Before I knew it, the sun was setting outside.
I hate it when that happens, so I’m going to make time each day to go for a quick walk. Sounds kinda hippy dippy, I know, but ya gotta find joy in everything, even the small stuff.
Anywho, if you’re game and have a few minutes to spare, how about touching base in the Monday Poll? Think of it as a long, all-day coffee break where we share what we’re doing in our little corners of the world. 🙂
- To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

Hi Nina,
I read that book a while back and liked it. Man, it was depressing though…
What food did you cook for the Superbowl?
Nina says
its pretty sad, what ive read so far. 🙂
no cooking — we ordered wings, someone bought pizza and beer, someone else bought an awesome pound cake and flan.
i also bought a red velvet cake and a box of cookies from costco, as well as some chips and three kinds of dip. we had a bunch of sausage and i put all of them in a baking sheet and doused them w/ heinz chili sauce, chopped onions and a bit of garlic powder.
i figured i wouldnt wear myself out cooking because i would get tired cleaning up afterwards! best decision of my life!
Karen says
Now that is a genius plan, my friend. Sounds like such a fun get together. 🙂

1. Mood: Ecstatic. We got news a few days ago that my fiance and I had 30 days to be out of the house we’re renting. After several stressful days, we found a perfect apartment and signed a lease with my old college roommate. 🙂

4. One of the best times in your life? I’ve been fortunate – there have been a lot of “best” moments. Maybe my traveling?

Ruchita says
1. Mood:
Kinda tired. Stayed up too late last night.
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head?
Most of my stress comes from work where I’m working on multiple projects that are all supposed to be to priority. I try to make to-do lists of specific items, but most of the time I’ll put bullet points on a post-it and just work on those things. I get hundreds of emails, so I have to focus on my tasks instead of getting bogged down in responding to messages.
3. What are you reading right now?
“Cat Vs. Cat: Keeping Peace When You Have More Than One Cat” by Pam Johnson-Bennett. We added another kitty to our family a week ago, and this book has some great tips. I’m also going to order “Think Like a Cat: How to Raise a Well-Adjusted Cat–Not a Sour Puss” by the same author. It’s a great reference guide for all things cat.
4. One of the best times in your life?
Hm, probably in the late 90s during college.
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure?
Nope, but I’d like to try one sometime, especially since they are supposed to last a long time.
6. Three simple pleaures?
1) Sleeping in on Saturday mornings, 2) Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches 3) Coming home on Friday nights and having the whole weekend ahead of me.
7. Whom do you call when you need advice?
Depends on the type of advice – if it’s practical suff, I just Google it. For other things, I’ll pray or talk to my family.
8. A recent happy moment?
Over the weekend, taking the first bite of some home made brownies.
9. Are you a red dress kinda girl?
Definitely!
10. Weekly goals:
Make some waffles! I got a waffle-maker for my 10 year service anniversary at work. 🙂
Have a great Monday!
Karen says
Hope your Monday was great, Ruchita. 🙂
Leah says
1. Mood: It’s super quiet at work and I just sent kind of a mean e-mail to two Director-level coworkers. Should have just talked to them instead of hitting ‘send’. Don’t you hate that?
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head? I make sure to hit the gym. One of my classes always ends with applause and the class attendees saying: “I feel 1000% better.”
3. What are you reading right now? Right now I’m reading ‘What the Dog Saw’ I just finished “Poser: my life in 23 yoga poses” (Amazing!)
4. One of the best times in your life? when my husband and I were building our vacation home…5 years of sweat and love.

I read somewhere that it helps to wait a while before sending a heated e-mail. If I’m feeling mad I usually give it 15-30 minutes before hitting send… it has saved my @ss many times, LOL!
Tracy says

Tania says
Karen,
How was your Super Bowl Party? Have you tried the tomato basil hummus or the pine nut hummus? It’s delish!!! BTW: my mom says that hummus is the perfect food. She heard that on either The Food Network or the Cooking Channel. I’m in a family of foodies!!

4. One of the best times in your life? 1999 was a great year for me. I was a Senior in High School and all I had to do was cruise. Got into my dream college, high school classes were easy peasy, managed the boy’s b-ball team, took amazing senior pictures. I also went on a really awesome senior sneak trip to florida!
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure? none of that for me. I type way to much to fiddle to much with my nails. Love Jen Anison’s: she buff’s hers!
6. Three simple pleasures? trying a new recipe and it is successful, seeing animals, watching the snow mountains in the middle of the parking lot collapse.

Hahah “Hoyt’s mother would not approve”! This cracked me up, I have to start using that line!
Karen says
LOL re: Hoyt’s mom!
As for red gloss, what are you looking for? Something sheer or pigmented?
Emily says
Hey Karen, I’m looking for something I can wear everyday, not too shiny, not to vavavavoom. I thought Nars Manhunt would work but it turns fuchsia on me. I was inspired by a craft blog I read, her lipcolor looks so fun, she said she wears Bobbi Brown Red, I haven’t been to a store to check it out yet. Any suggestions?
http://chickpeastudio.typepad.com/chickpea_sewing_studio/2011/02/injured-yet-beading.html
Karen says
Oh, pretty. You might want to check out MAC Lipglass in Russian Red. I wear it all the time when I want a similar look and I like it a lot:
MAC Russian Red Lipglass
MAC Lipglass in Russian Red: A Bold Lip Look
If you want something more sheer try this one from Neutrogena:
Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Soother SPF 20 Lipgloss: A Budget Forget-Me-Not
You could also try applying either foundation, concealer or a lip eraser beneath your NARS Manhut to help block out the color of your natural lips. MAC makes one called “Lip Erase” that you can find at their Pro Stores.
Advah says
1. Mood: lazy but reasonably relaxed. I’ve plenty of things to do and write tonight, and work was intense but productive. It’s a nice feeling.
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head?
Going for a walk or just forcing myself to pause for a cup of tea right before I hit the panic moment helps me put things in perspective. When I get back to my desk, I can easily identify what tasks to do first. I also keep some of that Badger’s stress relief balm with me, it’s very helpful.
Oh, and yoga if I’m at home. Never underestimate the power of a few downward dogs!
I like your method, Karen!
3. What are you reading right now?
Neil McCormick’s I Was Bono’s Doppelganger (geek alert)
4. One of the best times in your life?
This summer actually. I was dating this guy I really, really liked, and whilst I knew things weren’t right I had an amazing time hanging out with him, friends, tapping into free fun Festival parties and lounging in the sun. It’s a funny feeling but it was like I “owned” my life and felt like the better, more confident version of myself. 🙂
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure?
Never had a manicure.
6. Three simple pleasures?
A lazy weekend breakfast with coffee, and bread and honey.
Dozing off in the sunshine.
Lying on a beach in the sun with no other sound than ciccadas and the waves.
7. Whom do you call if you need advice?
Never thought of it but my brother! We both live abroad and a foreign language every day, and seem to have the same understanding of some situations. So even if I don’t ask specifically for advice, chatting helps me through things.
8. A recent happy moment?
Two of my friends decided to take me for a glass of red wine on Saturday evening. It turned into 3 and was a looot of fun!
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl?
Don’t have one but I wish I did!
10. Weekly goals: have fun! I’m going through a couple of events for work, that could also be stressful. So I’ll try to relax and actually enjoy them.
Oh, and I should try and be productive too.
Karen, excellent point about “staying in the moment”. A few years ago I did a reiki training, and the guy who taught me talked about how our thoughts are 99% of the time in the past and future, but very rarely in the present. And how one benefit (and difficulty) of yoga and relaxation, for instance, is to force us to ignore all of “what happened/could happen/will happen” to only think of what we’re doing right now.
I sometimes make a point of leaving the iPod at home for a few days, so I can walk to/from work and notice what’s around me. If I’m listening to music I often get carried away and have mental arguments with my boss for instance. (am I crazy?)
Karen says
AH, you’re making me want to take a yoga class! I used to do Stinky Gym Yoga but I quit my membership when I moved. I loved being able to just concentrate on my breath and be in the moment.
And no, you’re not alone when you get carried away with the music!
Lisa says
1. Mood: Good but tired, we got another pile of snow last night and I’m so over salt-stained boots! LOL
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head? I try to remember that I could have it a lot worse and that I’m pretty lucky on every level.
3. What are you reading right now? The Passage by Justin Cronin…good book but it’s a heavy hardcover, a drag on my commute.
4. One of the best times in your life? When I was about 33 and met my future husband, having that feeling of utter peace and being in love, knowing that we’d be together forever.
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure? Yes, from CND. I loved it! The colour was a really nice pale opalescent shade and it really did last almost the entire 3 weeks. A bonus was that my nails grew wonderfully as a result. The downer was that I had to pay to have them removed and the next application was of a color I didn’t care for because she wasn’t stocked int the shade I liked. I ended up being off the shade myself after about 1 week and my nails sustained some “damage”. I would def. be a regular for the gel polish if it weren’t so expensive.
6. Three simple pleasures? Getting a seat on the subway, peanut butter on hot toast, taking a long walk by myself
7. Whom do you call if you need advice? Both my sister and my husband
8. A recent happy moment? Dancing with my almost 3 year old son to the Black Eyed Peas “I’ve got a feeling”, his favourite song (which he calls “good night”)
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl? Sure, I don’t own one but I wouldn’t discount it…
10. Weekly goals: Organize and finalize Valentine’s goodies for my DH & son 🙂
Karen says
How cute, Lisa! Kids are so adorable when they dance, especially when they bop up and down, LOL!
Lisa says
P.S. Karen, you can paint right over a gel manicure, then remove it with your regular nail polish remover, it won’t affect the gel at all…
Karen says
Really? I’ve read that you can remove gel manis at home… must investigate. 🙂
Lisa says
Morning Karen:
I removed mine my soaking cotton pads in acetone and then wrapping them around my nail bed with a layer of tin foil on top for about 7 min. per nail. The really “melted” quite a bit but I still had to use a “scraper” to remove some residue. I later buffed them to remove the little bit but I felt like I did damage to my nails. Don’t get me wrong, I love the look of the gel (I had the CND Shellar), they stayed shiny and new looking for well over 2 weeks…but I don’t have the time to go every 2 weeks to get them done…it’s definitley an investment you’re making. I do like them for vacations though…just not for “everyday life” 🙂 Pleasant day. Lisa
Karen says
Thanks for the info, Lisa! That’s good to know. You have a great day, too. 🙂
Trisha says
1. Mood: Great! I have coupon class tonight.
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head? I’m pretty good at keeping a level head without trying. But if I’m having a hard time, I just take a deep breath and remind myself that the stress will abate soon.
3. What are you reading right now? The first book (When Lightning Strikes) from Meg Cabot’s Vanished Part 1. Yep, I’m reading another book recommended by you, Karen. Also, I finished the first Hunger Games book a few weeks ago and it was AMAZING…so good.
4. One of the best times in your life? Right now is pretty darn awesome. I have a good job and a nice apartment.
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure? Nope!
6. Three simple pleasures? A snuggie, fruit snacks and a good romantic movie.
7. Whom do you call if you need advice? My mom.
8. A recent happy moment? I started rewriting my first novel!
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl? I have a red dress. I never wear it. Does that answer your question? 😉
10. Weekly goals: Be adorable, as usual.
Karen says
LOVE that goal, Trisha!
Lisa says
1. Mood: fierce! I’ve been eating wholesome good food and just got over being sick, and I worked out this morning!

8. A recent happy moment? Today when I felt like a rockstar lifting weights at the gym.
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl? Yes, please!
10. Weekly goals: Consistency and taking care of myself 🙂
Karen says
Rock on with your weight lifting, Lisa! I miss doing the bench press…
Robin says
1. Mood:

2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head?
Take time out for myself. Whether that means going for a walk, going shopping, or hitting the gym, I always make sure to make myself my number one priority.
3. What are you reading right now?
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand (SOO GOOD!)
4. One of the best times in your life?
When I was 15 I traveled cross country for 6 weeks and saw amazing sites across the country.
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure?
Yes, once. I loved that it lasted for about 2 weeks, but didn’t like that I wasn’t able to remove the polish myself. I would recommend it for someone going on vacation.
6. Three simple pleasures?
Newborn puppies, a manicure on a Saturday afternoon, laying on the beach in the summer
7. Whom do you call if you need advice?
My mom
8. A recent happy moment?
Just moved into my new apartment in the best neighborhood in Boston 🙂
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl?
Nope, I’m an LBD kind of girl
10. Weekly goals:
Bring lunch to work at least 3 days this week and cook dinner at least 3 nights this week.
Karen says
I’ll have to check out that book! Thanks, Robin. 🙂
Oh, and congrats on your new apartment!
Heidi says
Hi, Karen. I know what you mean about staying in the moment. It’s something I’ve really tried to work on in the past few months. I can spend way too much time regretting things in the past and worrying about the future. I read a really interesting book not too long ago called The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. It was a challenging read, but really addressed that whole issue. Good stuff.
1. Mood:
Tired, but relaxed. Had a good weekend.
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head?
I tend to freak out initially, get that out of my system, and then I can just take a deep breath and figure out what needs to be done.
3. What are you reading right now?
I’m readying Excuses Be Gone by Wayne Dyer, and at the same time I’m reading Pat Benatar’s autobiography. I’ve always got more than one book going at any given time.
4. One of the best times in your life?
I would actually say that it’s now. I’m going through alot of changes emotionally and getting to meet some great people that I’m learning alot from.
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure?
Nope.
6. Three simple pleasures?
Cuddling with Missy, watching the birds playing in the backyard, and listening to some great music.
7. Whom do you call if you need advice?
My best friend, John. He relocated back to his home state of New Jersey a few years back, but I still call or email him whenever I need input on something. He knows me better than anyone else.
8. A recent happy moment?
Had a great time at a birthday party yesterday. Lots of laughs, good food, good music.

More of a red sweater and jeans kind of girl.

Job hunting and staying positive.
Karen says
Hi Heidi,
Thank you so much for the book rec. I’ll try to thumb through next time I’m at the book store.
Good luck with the job hunt this week, and send Missy some kitty love for me!
kalcedon says
1. Mood: Glad and happy and calm :).
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head?: I just let my hair down for some hours (even if it means getting more work done afterwards… I just need to have a rest), listen to some music, close my eyes and relax.
3. What are you reading right now? The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory (gotta love costume novels :D)
4. One of the best times of your life? Probably the time after my final exams in high school… never been that relieved before or after.
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure? I’ve had gel fake nails, but just a gel manicure, no. I’m not even a nail polish kind of girl, to be honest.
6. Three simple pleasures: 1) when I’m coming home at night from the metro station, and nobody’s there on the road… so I can start singing my lungs off even if my voice is dreadful :D, 2) competing with the contestants in quiz shows… you know, shouting before the TV (somtimes with the whole family), thinking aloud…, 3) strolling/walking around when in heels and nice clothes 😀
7. Whom do you call if you need advice? I’m kinda stubborn, so I never really ask for advice, I try to sort things out on my own… if I’m really in trouble, I usually call my mom.
8. A recent happy moment? Getting a bargain older LE MAC Lipglass in a CCO-like place :D.
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl? Mmmm… not really. I mean, I’d wear a red dress once, but I think I’d feel more comfortable in a dress that is of a not so bright colour.
10. Weekly goals: Visiting the university to enter some of my grades in my report book, go to my library to renew my membership, prepare myself for the next university semester :).
Karen says
NICE! What MAC Lipglass did you find?
kalcedon says
Li’ Hot Pepper :).

Karen says
Happy, happy birthday, Sandy! Treat yourself to some MAC WW goodies!
AnieJ says
1. Mood:
Focused but not being very productive. Trying really hard to do all I scheduled this week.
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head?
Usually I pig out on chocolate which gets my mind to think that I have calmed down or indulged in something else. Lately I’ve been going back to my old favorite albums and blasting a song or two, really keeps me going.
3. What are you reading right now?
Not a whole hell of a lot, more writing recently, but I guess I was last reading Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters. I liked Pride and Prejudice and Zombies much better so far.
4. One of the best times in your life?
My whole trip to New Zealand; I have to move there at some point, even if it’s 50 years from now. I felt totally at home there.
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure?
No, only ever had one manicure, and it was about as basic as it gets.
6. Three simple pleasures?
Feeling healthier for finishing a glass of water, the smell of freshly washed hair, and seeing the pale morning light come through the window curtains.
7. Whom do you call if you need advice?
My dad. Hands down, he always makes me feel as though I can handle it all.
8. A recent happy moment?
Giving belly-rubs to my kitty Snowy because I’m the only one she allows to do that!
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl?
I don’t know. Last time I tried, I bought this gorgeous red dress for V-Day last year, waited for it to ship etc. but when it arrived it fit like it was 2-3 sizes too small. So my beautiful red dress made me feel huge and ugly, even though I was at my lowest weight in years! I haven’t felt like trying again…
10. Weekly goals:
Finish e.l.f. week for my blog without wanting to just play paints with it all from being so tired. Apply to at least five jobs by Sunday, and keep the cats from killing each other.
Karen says
Good luck with the job hunt, Anie!
Kim says
1. Mood: A little irritable but nothing that won’t be fixed by going home in half an hour and being with the family. 🙂
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head? Well, I haven’t had a lot of practice with stress so I don’t think I handle it very well. I remember once being crazy busy at work and not taking the time to look at a co-worker’s pictures of her kids. It would have taken 5 minutes and I just didn’t think I could spare a second. I’ve always regretted that and apologized later – she very kindly said she hadn’t noticed – but I’ve always felt like a jerk for it. Now I guess I cope by realizing that it really will not be the end of the world if I finish 5 minutes later than I’d hoped. I also tend to work well under pressure so luckily it doesn’t come up much.
3. What are you reading right now? The Lord of the Rings… again. 🙂
4. One of the best times in your life? To quote Frank “when I was 17, it was a very good year”. High school with my very best friends; winning sports teams – our little girls’ basketball team from the middle of nowhere actually went to States that year; the boyfriend of my (at the time) dreams; great grades. I loved that year.
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure? No, I really prefer natural nails. You’ve probably seen this but all the major pro nail companies (CND, OPI, etc.) now have gel polish. Goes on like a polish and soaks off fast. A quicker alternative to the traditional gels!
6. Three simple pleasures? Sleep, red wine, a good book.
7. Whom do you call if you need advice? My bffs or the Hubs or my Mom – depends on the advice needed.
8. A recent happy moment? So many to choose from! Cheering my boys yesterday. Both had a good game and one scored a goal.
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl? Oh, you betcha! I know, weird because of the lipstick thing. Somehow, it’s different to me.
10. Weekly goals: This is why I’m not ruling the world yet. No goals. 🙂
Karen says
LOL re: your weekly goals! You always make me laugh! 🙂
Alison says
1. Mood: Chilled out

4. One of the best times in your life? Meeting Jared Leto at Download festival last year, he is even more beautiful up close!
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure? I haven’t and I’m not sure I would get one, I like to change up my mani a couple of times a week. I may consider it for a holiday abroad though.
6. Three simple pleasures? 1. Walking barefoot in the sand on a warm day, dipping my toes into the cool sea. 2. Waking up to see the sun shining and hearing the birds singing. 3. Snuggles with my SO
7. Whom do you call if you need advice? My mum or my best friend depending what I need advice on
8. A recent happy moment? Today seeing that my new Spring Chanel polishes and the ombres Perlees palette have been shipped!
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl? I rarely wear dresses or red, I wish I could feel comfortable in them but I don’t!
10. Weekly goals: Chillin’ with my SO we have a much needed week off together!
Karen says
I’ll be forever jealous of your meeting with Jared!! AHH!
Mmmm says
1. Mood:
Just plain happy since things are going extremely well at the moment and a bit tired with the lack of sleep I’m getting in the pas couple of weeks.(Plus it’s a Monday…that explains it all! 😉 )
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head?
If I’m extremely stressed I usually “explode” (aka: shout at the person nearest to me whcich often happens to be my brother or my mum), then calm right down. Chocolate& other nhealthy foods are my emergency remedy from stress. I usually get really stressed when a lot of important things start happening at once and everyhting seems to go wrong. I need 5 minutes to chill and write a “what to do” list.
3. What are you reading right now?
“Sula” by Toni Morrison…and 5 different books. I can never read only one book at a time. I think that’s why my pile of books “to finish reading” still gets bigger.
4. One of the best times in your life?
A couple of days ago when I found out I was given an amazing opportunity to take part in a real. big musical! (Based on the book called “Divided City”) Rehearsals starting in March…I absolutely can’t wait!!!!
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure?
No. Why? Because I always feel the need of chaning my nail colour. Every 2 to 3 days. It isn’t exactly the best for my nails, but I just can’t help it. 😉
6. Three simple pleasures?
Randomly meeting with my friends. Seeing my friends face light up when we meet & NOT getting a pimple somewhere very visible.
7. Whom do you call if you need advice?
A couple of really close friends that do give the best advices, though I do tend to keep my problems to myself.
8. A recent happy moment?
This Saturday I went to the 70’s inspired party and I had an absolute blast with my friends.
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl?
Not really… I don’t suppose red is my strongest colour.
10. Weekly goals:
Continue on my Jessie J sketch, make sure all my essays are done for time and finish off a hand-crafted present I’m in the middle of making for a friend who’s Birthday happens to be in 9 days. 😉
Karen says
Have a great week, Mmmm!
Nena says
1. Mood:
– Exhausted! Fiance and I got a new puppy on Saturday (to add to my 1 1/2 year old Chihuahua and 1 1/2 year old cat). She has been up all night the last couple days crying. I’ve got like, 5 minutes sleep!
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head?
– It depends on what it is. If it’s work stress, I like to make lists and a lot of ’em! Then, I grab a cup of coffee, close my door, put the iPod headphones in, and work away. If it’s home stuff, I usually just isolate myself for a little while and play games on my phone until I calm down and figure out how I’m going to tackle whatever it is!
3. What are you reading right now?
– “Exploiting My Baby Because It’s Exploiting Me” by Teresa Strasser. I’m not pregnant, never have been pregnant, and probably won’t be any time soon, but I loved listening to her on The Adam Carolla podcast. I think she’s hilarious and brilliant, so I picked up a copy of her book and I must say, it’s indeed, hilarious!
.
4. One of the best times in your life?
– 2008. I was 21 and had just graduated from college and got hired as a probation officer, all in the same week! I was in a pretty toxic relationship and on my 22 birthday, I finally cut him loose! For those few months, I was single and had the time of my life. I did what I wanted, when I wanted. I wore what I wanted, ate what I wanted, and worked out like crazy. I had never been single for very long, so I embraced it. Plus, I was in great shape! It really was a fun time. Then, I met fiance, got engaged, and became that boring old married couple lol.
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure?
– No! But I’ve always wanted to as well.
6. Three simple pleasures?
– A good martini, a huge plate of my favorite pasta, and lying on the couch with Fiance and all of our goofy pets!
7. Whom do you call if you need advice?
– Either Fiance, my mom, or work friends.
8. A recent happy moment?
– Watching my cat, chihuahua, and new puppy all playing in the kitchen. It’s kinda goofy, I know, but I was excited to see them all getting along.
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl?
– YES YES AND YES! I LOVE red dresses, and I’m with ya Karen, throw in a great pair of red high heels!
10. Weekly goals:
– To become a better puppy/kitty mommy
– To keep my house clean after spending an entire Saturday cleaning it from top to bottom
– To keep up with my work and have all of my absconders and revokers arrested this week. It’s only Monday and I’m one down =)
– To run or have morning rendezvous with the evil Jillian Michaels every day this week
– To continue to remind myself that Fiance is human, and can hear the puppy cry just as loud as I can!
Karen says
What kind of puppy did you guys get, Nena?
Nena says
She is a Razor Edge Pit Bull. The most adorable little thing ever. My chihuahua, Misfit, is NOT thrilled about her new sister, but they seem to be getting along 🙂
Karen says
Oh, I love it when they’re puppies! They have such big paws and sweet faces. 🙂
Give it some time… Misfit will soon love being a big sister.

Fieran says
1. Mood: On top of the world – everything is looking up again.

3. What are you reading right now? This is a bit embarrassing but there’s a book known as Naked Heat which is supposedly the book Richard Castle wrote in the TV series Castle. It’s not the best books, but I like the banter between Nikki Heat and Jameson Rook.
4. One of the best times in your life? When I first moved to Norway – it was amazing. It still is, but I kind of miss the rose tinted glasses I was wearing back then.
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure? No, I change my mind on nail polish all the time – so it would not be worth the expense.

7. Whom do you call if you need advice? The bf or my parents.
8. A recent happy moment? Discussing our weekend in Berlin with the bf.
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl? Err no, I don’t think I have the body to wear a dress – if this makes any sense? I’m still battling the midsection bulge so I have very little confidence with dresses. I’ve never really worn one – being a tomboy and all – I’m more of a pants or a skirt kinda gal 🙂
10. Weekly goals: Be as productive as I can with work + Norwegian language lessons and go to the gym 4 times to “earn” the weekend in Berlin.

5. Have you ever had a gel manicure? Nope. I’ve had acrylics. I’d be open to them if it didn’t trash my nails as bad as acrylics do, I like the way they look but it’s just not worth it to me when I get them taken off.
6. Three simple pleasures? Waking up next to the love of my life every day, snuggles with my puppy love, and rare moments of sunshine during winter in New England!

3. What are you reading right now? The Corrections
4. One of the best times in your life? a vacation I took to Mexico with my best friend. We were treated like celebrities.
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure? Nope. I’ve only had 1 regular manicure.
6. Three simple pleasures? Iced tea, a good night’s sleep with good dreams, looking at Japanese beetles.
7. Whom do you call if you need advice? Pondering this took me by surprise. I no longer seem to look to anyone for advice. I rely on myself. 8. A recent happy moment? I felt so physically good the other day. I know it was the result of the exercise I’ve been doing and the good and healthy way I’ve been eating. This made me so happy.

Saffron says
1. Mood:
Improving; I went out for happy hour with the office grunts last week and it felt good to know I’m not the only one who thinks my workplace is crummy, thus I am not suffering in silence and I can vent a little. Misery and company, together at last!
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head?
Distance and advice. I’m usually more stressed out by the actions of others than by deadlines (I’m a little socially awkward and phobic and I think I radiate victim rays without meaning to) – and I’m most likely to experience extreme stress if someone in a position of power abuses me. The short term way to keep my head together is get away from the offending person and to get a hand from someone else – a little venting and a little perspective checking help me put things together and can help me come up with a plan for setting boundaries as I am able.
3. What are you reading right now?
Mark Twain’s “Roughing It” has been cracking me up on the bus during commutes.
4. One of the best times in your life? During a brief year in my late teens I was on such a grand adventure I was free from anxiety and depression for the first and only time. However, the conditions weren’t sustainable, nor were they gonna make me especially well rounded. I think of it as “sufficiently distracted to forget about my problems” 😛 .
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure?
Never had a manicure period!
6. Three simple pleasures?
My cats: Flo, Mame, and Ducky. 🙂
7. Whom do you call if you need advice?
Depends on the kind of advice I need – I have a couple friends who are great at career and money advice, and other friends who are great for relationship and emotional advice. My much older friends are often very good at matters of general perspective.
8. A recent happy moment?
At lunch today I was at the drugstore and it got robbed – we were all safe and there were no weapons but it was such a wild and dramatic event that everyone starting talking to each other. It’s such a rare thing to connect with other folks when you live in the city that it was kind of delightful to be interacting with all these people with whom I had nothing in common other than choice of drugstore.
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl?
I’m not a dress kind of girl, unless there’s some leggings involved to prevent scandal when I doubtlessly do something athletic. Then: red, tight, sequins, you name it, bring it on!
10. Weekly goals: gettin the taxes done, getting my a hair cut – I look like a st. bernard…
Karen says
Holy crap! I hope they catch that person who robbed the store. I’m glad you’re okay!

Karen says
I bet Zena looked adorable with that pile of snow on her nose. Give that cutie pie pup a hug for me!
Kate & Zena says
Oh yea, it was cute…even when it melted onto her nose. She kept licking her muzzle and giving us the look that said, “What on earth????” It was so funny! She finally figured out that rubbing her nose into the carpet would solve her problems…15 minutes later!
She gives you a playful bow in return.
Catherine says
1. Mood: Exhausted and a bit sore and kinda freaking out. I was sick Friday and all weekend and got nothing done so I’m more behind than usual. I just saw my doctor today though, and she thinks I have whatever viral thing is going around and warned me to go back on Friday if I’m not 100% ’cause she’s had to antibiotic up 65% of people who got a bacterial sinus infection on top of it. I’m really susceptible to sinus infections so I’m kind of freaking out. Being behind on schoolwork and my mom visiting this week doesn’t help. ;_; She lives 2000 miles away and I only get to see her 1-2x a year (I don’t get along with my dad so I haven’t been home in over two years) so I really want to not be sick while she’s here. My doc gave me some stuff for the (TMI alert) cold sores I get when I’m sick/stressed out though, so hopefully those will go away soon and I’ll be able to eat normally.
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head? Deep breaths, hot tea, and a twenty to thirty minute walk outside. Crisp fresh air does wonders, even if it isn’t sunny outside.
3. What are you reading right now? “An interdomain sector mediating allostery in Hsp70 molecular chaperones” by the Ranganathan and Gierasch groups. And about 20 other papers. The title listed is the one I’m hoping to present for my journal club talk in 3 weeks (if it gets approved) and I’m trying also to cobble together a proposal idea for my practice quals. This will be the third proposal I’ve written since August, so I’m kind of out of ideas lol.
4. One of the best times in your life? Two summers ago when I interned at UCSF. Working with great people and only doing research and not having any schoolwork or other job obligations for 9 weeks was AWESOME. I can’t wait ’til my classes are over.
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure? Nope.
6. Three simple pleasures? Sunshine! (Especially accompanied by highs in the 70s in the middle of February!), hot tea & curling up with a good book.
7. Whom do you call if you need advice? My mom, my best friend from high school and my counselor.
8. A recent happy moment? I found the Stila hearts blush in store. I bought one for myself and a couple more as gifts. =)
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl? I wish!! I’ve been looking for a red dress for ages but I can’t ever seem to find one in just the right color that is in the right style or cut for me. So, still looking. But I’d love to be able to rock a red dress!
10. Weekly goals: Not get a sinus infection. Do a reasonable job at meeting deadlines for school. Have fun with my mom & just kind of go with the flow as far as plans for her visit.

Karen says
Good luck at your gig, Melanie! Break a leg!

Hi Karen! Just wanted to leave a quick comment that if you get a gel manicure like a pink and white you can paint nail polish right on top. 🙂 I worked reception at my uncle’s nail salon and after i got the pink and white, the girls there would repaint my nails every other day and they held up well to all the polish changes. Of course, after a few weeks you need to get a fill or have them taken off, and the surface of your nail is in a sad state afterwards. Which is why people get “addicted” to getting their nails done, haha. So pretty!
meimei says
Karen, I think I want to read that food-writing book, too! And I hear you on living in the moment – part of the reason why I’m stressed out is because I can’t just stop and pay attention to everything else that’s going on around me.

10. Weekly goals: To practice being in the moment, as well – but also, to practice being thankful for all the small blessings in my life.

1. Mood:
Exhausted. Been up early this past few days and visiting relatives,
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head?

2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head? In stressful situations I become quite cold and focused, I find it natural. The problem is that when everything is done, I realise that I have no energy at all, I feel drained. It takes a while to recover.

4. One of the best times in your life? The last couple of years of high school (17-19) were FUN!

Hi Karen! Do you have any info about the 3 new Urban Decay palettes? I saw their info on fb, and they are on their website now
Linnea says
Why do I consistently do these things on Tuesday? Are my Mondays that bad? .. Hmm.
1. Mood: I’m OK. Happy, but slightly stressed.
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head? I’m kind of similar to you Karen.. I get stressed when I have a whole bunch of deadlines or things that need to get done NOW coming at me. I’m a super super logical person, so I make a list, and I try to cross off as many things as I can. Even if they’re insignificant, it helps me calm down. I always say worrying about it isn’t the answer.. doing it is the answer. Don’t fret about something you have to do.. just do it. 90% of the time something crappy is actually not as bad as you thought it would be.
3. What are you reading right now? Fancy Pants by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Romance books are my secret pleasure. But this one has a lot more going on than a regular romance.
4. One of the best times in your life? I would have to say the summer of 2009. My and the boy were going strong, I took a really nice trip to Europe(though I missed the boy a lot), and got to go out to the coast to visit the grandparents and see the fam. It was boy and I’s first long roadtrip, and it went really great. (KAREN!! size 0?! REALLY!)
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure? No I have not. Manicures aren’t really worth it for me as I seem never to get them to last 2+ days. I figure I can just paint my nails and get that long.. Love me some Pedicures though!
6. Three simple pleasures? Good tunes and fast driving. Boy’s arms around me. Fresh Oysters(really good ones with a good mignonette.
7. Whom do you call if you need advice? My Brother or My dad.

1. Mood: Exhausted! These past two weeks have been so hectic & my bed is hurting my back beyond belief! That’s actually probably why I haven’t gotten a good nights sleep in awhile.
2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head? I take a step back and think about something that calms me down. Maybe watch a movie, take a whole day and just spend it with friends. Not worrying about what’s stressing me out. A mini vacation if you will.
3. What are you reading right now? Nothing!! I miss having a book or “project” to work on. I absolutely love reading and I’m bummed that lately I haven’t found another book that interests me.
4. One of the best times in your life? Probably the past year and a half. I’ve gotten settled in school, a job, and found a wonderful man to spend my time with. Before this stage of my life, everything felt hectic and like I had no direction. It’s nice to have everything fall into place and know where I wanna be in the future.
5. Have you ever had a gel manicure? Uh would this count as getting your nails done? I always go every two weeks to get mine down and they put some kind of gel acrylic on and then my nails sit under the UV light to set. If this is the same, then yes. If not, then no.. Ha.
6. Three simple pleasures? Sleeping, Reading, & Cuddling! I honestly think cuddling is one of the magical wonders of the world. To be able to be relaxed in the arms of someone you love is the best feeling. Especially if you’re in a bad mood and just need some support!
7. Whom do you call if you need advice? My mother, my best friend, and my boyfriend. Depending on the type of advice, but my best friend is the number one person I call for everything.
8. A recent happy moment? Probably yesterday when my boy & I had a talk about where we wanted our future to go 🙂
9. Are you a red dress kind of girl? I LOVE red dresses. It’s strange because I’m super pale, but I love how sophisticated red dresses always are. Paired with some killer heels just completes the look.
10. Weekly goals: Make it to Sunday without falling over from lack of sleep! & pass my first Biology 1610 exam!
Stephanie says
1. Mood:

2. When things get stressful, how do you keep a level head?
