- You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 197. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
- Do you prefer to do your own nails or have them done at a nail salon?
- Sweet or savory?
- A challenge you’re working to overcome?
- Are you looking forward to anything this month?Â
- Truth or dare?
- When was the last time you freaked out about something?
- What’s your favorite kind of weather?
- What’s one of your favorite holiday treats?
- Weekly goals:
Actually really great for a Monday. I got to bed early last night, and the extra sleep made all the difference in the world. Yea for Zzz’s!
As much as I lurve a good hand/foot massage, I’m super picky about my nails, and I find doing them relaxing, so I usually do it myself. And then there’s the fact that I like to change the colors I’m wearing every few days, which kinda defeats the purpose of getting a really good salon mani/pedi.Â
A little bit of both, please. I like the contrast.
I’m trying to stay out of my own way. Like a lot of us, I tend to be my own worst enemy, and sometimes when I’m frustrated about a task I don’t want to do, I spend more time fretting about it than it would take to actually do the task.
Spending a few days with my family, eating tons of good food, and going shopping and ice skating (yup, ice skating in California) in San Francisco’s Union Square.
The dare! Nine times out of 10 I’ll take the dare. I’m adventurous that way. 😉 Plus, I like holding on to a bit of mystery…
Yesterday afternoon, and it was a heated one, too, with lots of stomping around the house, tears, crazy talking to myself, outfit changes — the whole nine yards.
I was feeling very overwhelmed about the holidays and the weekend drawing to a close, but more than that I was also hungry and have PMS (a lethal combination!).
Thank goodness El Hub was around to talk me down, and he said the magic words, “Why don’t we go to See’s to get you some chocolate?”
Sunny in the upper 70s with a light breeze blowing in from the ocean. Ah, Calgon… Take me to Oahu!
Baskin-Robbins’ peppermint ice cream, even though it’s that unnatural shade of pink that looks like Pepto-Bismol.
I missed a couple of workouts last week, and even when I have been running, I’ve just been doing the bare minimum to get by, so I want to get back on track. I also want to be extra sweet to Tabs this week because we haven’t been going for our walks outside as often as we did together back in summer.
Am I the only one who’s been struggling to stay focused lately? I don’t know if it’s just because of the holidays or what, but I haven’t been checking many things off of my to-do list…
Maybe what we need is a good dose of the Monday Poll. 🙂 We only have three Mondays left before 2012, so let’s makes ’em count!
- To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood: Pretty okay, even though I have a 6 page paper to complete today. Why am I so calm?
2. Do you prefer to do your own nails or have them done at a nail salon?: I could never afford to get them done at a salon, so I couldn’t really say. I have learned a lot from doing my own nails, so I would say being poor is sometimes good. 🙂
3. Sweet or savory?: Savory, then sweet. Yeah, I am really greedy.
4. A challenge you’re working to overcome?: My shyness when it comes to speaking up in class. My professors commented on how quiet I am.
5. Are you looking forward to anything this month?: The end of this semester and holidays with the boyfriend’s parents.
6. Truth or dare?: Truth. I pride myself on being honest.
7. When was the last time you freaked out about something?: When my boyfriend spoke to his ex on the phone all night. I was like “WTF??”
8. What’s your favorite kind of weather?: Sunny and mild.
9. What’s one of your favorite holiday treats?: Christmas sugar cookies and eggnog!
10. Weekly goals: Write my two papers (I have an 11 pager to write) and plan for a photo shoot on Thursday. Headshots with http://www.solvara.com

Nichole Clark says
1. Mood: Blah. Our family wakes up an hour earlier on Mondays which always throws everything off. Also, until about 20 minutes ago I was so tired that I had convinced myself it was Wednesday and the week was half over – not so much.
2. Do you prefer to do your own nails or have them done at a nail salon? I love a mani/pedi at the salon but im so self conscious that I always spend days leading up to it making sure that my hands and feet are perfect for the manicurist – it feels like a lot of work for the payoff.
3. Sweet or savory? Both for sure. Salt+sweet is the best combo.
4. A challenge you’re working to overcome? Each day that I survive in the ongoing battle of being a stay at home mom to a toddler is a challenge overcome.
5. Are you looking forward to anything this month? Yes! This month we celebrate Xmas, Hanukkah, my husbands birthday, & new years. Lots and lots of great food, drink, and family time in addition to this being the first “fun” christmas with my daughter now that she’s old enough to be a bit more excited about it.
6. Truth or dare? It usually depends on who’s asking. I cant think of many truths that my friends don’t know.
7. When was the last time you freaked out about something? We’re going to Kauai in February for a wedding and my fear of planes is already causing anxiety and freakouts.
8. What’s your favorite kind of weather? Crisp fall weather with the leaves a kaleidoscope of color and the cold biting smells of the season in my nose.
9. What’s one of your favorite holiday treats? My grandfather makes each family their own box of goodies every year and my favorite is his divinity. yummy,
10. Weekly goals: To finish getting all of the ornaments on the dang tree!

10. Weekly goals: get more Christmas shopping done. 😀
Courtney says
1. Mood: It’s a little bit lacking at the moment, honestly. December can do that to me, but I am working on it. I try not to give in to it completely.
2. Do you prefer to do your own nails or have them done at a nail salon? Both! 😀 I get them done about every two weeks, but I am such a spaz about wanting to try new colors. I end up changing my own polish once or twice in between mani/pedis.
3. Sweet or savory? Again with the both. 😉
4. A challenge you’re working to overcome? I think this goes back to question #1. I love the holiday season, and I want to fight against the natural stress that this month can bring. Maybe a few more beauty items to brighten my mood…
5. Are you looking forward to anything this month? Wearing party dresses and the fun make-up that goes with them.
6. Truth or dare? I am a “truth” gal all the way.

1. Mood: Pretty good. I finally bought myself a new iPhone after the other one got stolen. So much heartbreak. Thank goodness for insurance. I don’t know what made me sign up for insurance early this year, but I did it and I am so glad I did it.
2. Do you prefer to do your own nails or have them done at a nail salon? I feel a bit weird having someone do my nails for me. I feel it’s my responsibility to self-groom and nail painting is kind of fun, especially when watching a TV series or something.
3. Sweet or savory? Both. I’ve been trying to cut down on sugar for the past two years and I’ve learned to appreciate savory better.
4. A challenge you’re working to overcome? I’m learning to relax and not feel overwhelmed. When work gets busy, I don’t want to crash. My dream is to always be friendly and approachable, no matter what time of the month it is (PMS, deadlines, etc.) so I’m working towards that. I’m also trying to eat healthy as I recently read that eating healthy and never going hungry (always having a small snack or so every two-three hours) is a great way to ensure I remain even tempered, reasonable, and rational.
5. Are you looking forward to anything this month? Christmas and New Years’. Christmas will be at the bf’s family home in South of Germany. New Year’s Eve will be at New York. I’m super excited. Can’t wait. I plan to take a few days off before the trip and just relax at home as well, it’s been a crazy year and I’m so glad it is ending.
6. Truth or dare? Truth. I’m not much of a dare person as I’m boring like that. Then again I haven’t done anything crazy to warrant truth. Ah, to live a simple, boring life 🙂
7. When was the last time you freaked out about something? It’s been awhile, I really can’t remember.
8. What’s your favorite kind of weather? Sunny but chilly days – my perfect Autumn/Spring. I get to wear boots but sunglasses too 🙂

2. Do you prefer to do your own nails or have them done at a nail salon? I would prefer getting them done at a salon but I am a poor student so I always do them myself.
3. Sweet or savory? Both depending on the day but not at the same time, I’m not into things that are sweet and salty at the same time
4. A challenge you’re working to overcome? I think overall to manage my time better and to take better care of my body

6. Truth or dare? Truth, you never know what you’re gonna get with a dare

8. What’s your favorite kind of weather? Sunny and super hot! I hate cold and precipitation of any kind…unfortunately I live in a place that is cold 8 months of the year and kinda rainy for most of the remainder 🙁

10. Weekly goals: Just get through my exams!
Yogirl says

3. Sweet or savory? I don’t want to choose so both.
4. A challenge you’re working to overcome? Concentrate on one task at a time.
5. Are you looking forward to anything this month? I love the holiday season, the cookies, the candles and everything.
6. Truth or dare? Dare, but I prefer not to choose.
7. When was the last time you freaked out about something? Last week when my family decided to skip the presents for xmas

10. Weekly goals: xmas party on Friday with my new company, the theme is James Bond so I’m working on the styling. And getting used to my new iPad 🙂

9. What’s one of your favorite holiday treats? Fresh mochi or a peppermint hot chocolate.
10. Weekly goals: Catch up on sleep!
Ruchita says
Le List
1. Mood:
Status quo for a Monday. Keeping busy at work, so that’s helping the day go by.
2. Do you prefer to do your own nails or have them done at a nail salon?
I prefer to get them done at a salon b/c I can never get my polish neat and I’m impatient about the drying time. That said, I rarely go to the salon b/c it seems like too much money to have the nail polish chip after hardly any time.
3. Sweet or savory?
Sweet!
4. A challenge you’re working to overcome?
Trying to eat healthier. I’ve started working out (completed Week 1 of 30 Day Shred) but to see results I need to change my eating habits.
5. Are you looking forward to anything this month?
Christmas vacation! I’ll be off work for the last week of the year.
6. Truth or dare?
Truth. I’m kind of a wimp. 🙂
7. When was the last time you freaked out about something?
This past weekend. There’s a stray kitty that’s been coming around that we’ve been feeding and stray cats always make me sad, especially when it’s cold out. Then something my husband said hit me the wrong way and I just burst into tears because I was feeling so sad. I think PMS made me extra sensitive. I took a minute to cry it out and then calmed down a bit.
8. What’s your favorite kind of weather?
Warm and sunny in the high 70s to low 80s.
9. What’s one of your favorite holiday treats?
Sugar cookies.
10. Weekly goals:
Try to work out 5 times this week and start Christmas shopping.
Have a great Monday!
Karen says
You have a great Monday too, Ruchita. 🙂 Woo hooo on working out, too!
Re: eating and working out — I’ve noticed that I get the most bang for my buck when I combine working out with eating healthy.
Lisa says
1. Mood: Pretty good, but stressed. I slept in too late, and have lots of work to do.
2. Do you prefer to do your own nails or have them done at a nail salon? I do my own at home. Every once in a while, my mom will treat me to a pedi though. It’s fun to hang out with her and get a good foot massage 🙂
3. Sweet or savory? Normally I would say sweet, but I’ve been on a chocolate with sea salt kick, so both.
4. A challenge you’re working to overcome? Procrastinating.
5. Are you looking forward to anything this month? I’m going to the Netherlands in 2 weeks for a conference!
6. Truth or dare? Truth
7. When was the last time you freaked out about something? My boyfriend and I had an argument last night over cleaning. We made up quickly though 🙂
8. What’s your favorite kind of weather? Sunshine! And dry heat. I can’t handle humidity.
9. What’s one of your favorite holiday treats? My sister makes the best zebra cookies. She should really open a bakery.
10. Weekly goals: Get my presentation together for the conference, turn in grades, find xmas presents for my family.
Karen says
Chocolate with sea salt is so yum! Have you ever had caramel with sea salt? That’s very tasty, too.
Lisa says
That sounds amazing! I’ll have to try some.
Katherine G says
1. Mood:
~content today. Can’t wait for the fiance to get home from work!
2. Do you prefer to do your own nails or have them done at a nail salon?
~I bite my fingernails like no tomorrow (have tried everything to no avail, and it’s a genetic habit, apparently), and my toenails are runner’s toenails. I prefer to do my toes myself – the nails are brittle and tend to break off easily if left unpolished and untreated. I can’t do fake fingernails because of my chosen field of work, so manicures are out of the question. Pedicures I just do myself, and I don’t trust anyone else with my toes.
3. Sweet or savory?
~I actually can’t tolerate a lot of sweet foods so I prefer savory. Gimme a turkey any day over candy!
4. A challenge you’re working to overcome?
~Be more confident in myself. I’m good at projecting confidence in my job but not so good at feeling it. Like you mentioned, we are our own worst enemies.
5. Are you looking forward to anything this month?
~Christmas, and my birthday the day after. I work on Christmas so I’m excited to celebrate it on my birthday the next day (Dec. 26).
6. Truth or dare?
~Dare. I agree with the idea of keeping mystery. I’m a pretty private person and only what I choose to share is what you will know about me 🙂
7. When was the last time you freaked out about something?
~The Tuesday before Thanksgiving. My fiance had informed me that we might be having guests with kids or we might not (this family was undecided). I don’t like the unknown in my personal life, so I was upset. They ended up not being able to come (the issue was the fact that they were undecided, if they had told me a week before if they were coming it would have been fine), and the Thanksgiving went off without a hitch.
8. What’s your favorite kind of weather?
~Depends on how I’m feeling. If’ I’m sick, I feel sad on sunny days because I can’t get out to enjoy them. But if I’m energetic and happy, it doesn’t matter what kind of weather. I can have fun in anything 🙂
9. What’s one of your favorite holiday treats?
~Eggnog and apple cider.
10. Weekly goals: Get this group project done for my Domestic Violence class without too much of a headache, and get our Christmas tree set up.
Karen says
Happy early birthday, Katherine. What will you be doing to celebrate?
Katherine G says
I will be going out with the family for dinner. Any Christmas plans for you?
Christina says

2. Do you prefer to do your own nails or have them done at a nail salon? I've never actually had my nails done at a salon before but I'd like to know what it's like. I have enjoyed trying to master the art of the nail brush stroke though 🙂
3. Sweet or savory? I need them both!
4. A challenge you’re working to overcome? Exactly the same as yours, Karen. With so many things to do, I become overwhelmed to the point that I just want to curl under the covers and worry instead of doing something.
5. Are you looking forward to anything this month? A MONTH LONG WINTER BREAK! AH! I'm going to have so much time that I won't know what to do with myself! I'm planning a stack of reading materials (ranging from novels to scientific journals) to keep me amused but sharp 🙂
6. Truth or dare? Truth… I'm shy if dares have me interacting with strangers. X3
7. When was the last time you freaked out about something? Heh… last Friday? I feel like I did unbelievably horrible on my organic chemistry lab final. With one final the night before, and that final the next morning I was mentally overwhelmed. My friends had to talk me down from that one XD
8. What’s your favorite kind of weather? I like cool weather… the kind where you can comfortably snuggle under a thick comforter and sip hot cocoa!
9. What’s one of your favorite holiday treats? I love gingerbread so much! It's sweet… it's savory… what more could I ask for? Plus, you can make little houses with it!
10. Weekly goals: Stay on track with mammalian physiology studying and then enjoy myself once finals are over 😀
Karen says
Good luck with your finals, Christina! You’ll do great. 🙂

Nice warm weather, blue sky, sun shining high without having to put on sunglasses and sometimes a little breeze.
9. What’s one of your favorite holiday treats?
A dutch treat; Kerststol. I can’t really describe it but it’s with almond paste in it.
10. Weekly goals:
To not take any naps anymore! Naps ruin my whole ritme… but I love sleeping in the afternoon!
Karen says
That dutch treat sounds delicious, Stephanie! Are you cooking anything special for the holidays this year?
Marian says
1. Mood: Tired. Holiday stuff is in full swing now. I’m wrapping, cleaning, baking. My hips are hurting lately. I’ve been overdoing the exercise to try and compensate for eating . It’s not working!
2. Do you prefer to do your own nails or have them done at a nail salon? I love doing my nails! It’s one of the biggest pleasures of my week. I’ve only had a manicure once and I didn’t like it!

5. Are you looking forward to anything this month? I always look forward to seeing my kids open their presents on Christmas.

8. What’s your favorite kind of weather? 80-90F, sunny, clear
9. What’s one of your favorite holiday treats? shortbread
10. Weekly goals: wrap gifts, do some baking and stay away from it.
Katie says
No more Walking Dead, Karen! 🙁
1. Mood: Energized-ish! I just cleaned my dorm room, and I am prepared to start the final exam essays I procrastinated doing over the weekend. To be fair, though, my entire house had a fun Secret Santa last night, and I was preparing for it yesterday afternoon. 😀
2. Do you prefer to do your own nails or have them done at a nail salon? I am meticulous when it comes my nails, so I do it at home or have my aunts (who are professional nail techs) do it when I go over to my grandma’s!
3. Sweet or savory? Both!
4. A challenge you’re working to overcome? Perfectionism. It’s been a lifelong challenge.
5. Are you looking forward to anything this month? End of finals, end of semester break, WINTER BREAK!
6. Truth or dare? I’ve never played a real game of truth or dare! But I think I would go for the dares!
7. When was the last time you freaked out about something? The Monday before Thanksgiving, my group had to turn in a rough of our research paper, and I had nothing to contribute! I was going crazy that night – calling them like crazy, talking to myself, etc. I just ended up sleeping early and had nightmares that night. I woke up with nausea. (Things turned out fine, though.)
8. What’s your favorite kind of weather? Sunny – not hot – weather with a slight breeze. Or totally rainy weather so I can stay in reading a book or watching a movie.
9. What’s one of your favorite holiday treats? Peppermint chocolate bark! Or just treating myself to cookies & milk.
10. Weekly goals: Finish strong on those finals for the next week and a half!
Shannon says
Hands down Eggnog is my all time favorite holiday treat. I also love Satsuma mandarin oranges I look forward to them all year long.
Shannon says
Oh my gosh, only 3 more Mondays?? This year has fuh-LOWN by!
1. Mood:
Okay. I don’t feel like I’m totally on top of my game, but I’m not falling off the horse (bwah ha, two metaphors/sayings in one sentence!). I’m managing, I think.
2. Do you prefer to do your own nails or have them done at a nail salon?
Price-wise, I like doing it myself. However, I love spending the time getting my toes pampered. I’ve never gotten a mani – crazy, huh? I feel like it might be a good option for me, because I only have time to do my nails once every 2-3 weeks.
3. Sweet or savory?
I’m with you, Karen – both, please!
4. A challenge you’re working to overcome?
Taking on too much. I think I can do everything, and as it turns out… :-/ I’m trying to be more like my grandmother: as my dad says, she was good at everything she did, and if she wasn’t good at it, she wouldn’t do it. I want to be excellent in everything I do, and that sometimes means setting up boundaries for yourself.
5. Are you looking forward to anything this month?
Um, HELLO?! Christmas, yo! I still need to buy presents, but I am so so so looking forward to spending a whooole week hanging out with my in-laws and hubby. I’ve been so busy recently I feel like I haven’t been able to spend time with my man!
6. Truth or dare?
Truth. I am not so much a risk taker.
7. When was the last time you freaked out about something?
Last Tuesday. I cried 3 different times that day because I was so stressed out. Twice it was in front of people (my coworker and then my teacher). So embarrassing.
8. What’s your favorite kind of weather?
I really like all of it! I’m not a fan of bitter coldness, but I like seasonal weather. It’s just enjoyable. 🙂
9. What’s one of your favorite holiday treats?
Mashed potatoes! (don’t judge.) My family NEVER ate mashed potatoes, except at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I’m also a huge fan of pumpkin pie and pumpkin cheesecake. I’m a sucker for sweets, though, so almost anything candied or baked… num!
10. Weekly goals:
The week is too much to think about right now. Goals for today and tomorrow include getting through my classes, eating somewhat healthy food (I don’t think the egg salad sandwich I had for lunch counts…), and kicking @ss on my final projects. I’ll worry about Wednesday and the days after a little later in the week. 🙂
marisol says
1. Mood: rested. I slept a lot this weekend trying to recoup from family being in town. I think I am caught up.

3. Sweet or savory? Both
4. A challenge you’re working to overcome? Trying to get back on track and lose weight. Been losing/gaining the same weight for the past couple of weeks. Is that what some would call a plateau?
5. Are you looking forward to anything this month? shhh don’t tell my mom but the peace and quiet of the house when she goes to Mexico for two weeks.
6. Truth or dare? depends on the crowd
7. When was the last time you freaked out about something? a couple of days ago. The job situation is getting to me a bit.

2. Do you prefer to do your own nails or have them done at a nail salon? i like to do them myself, but there’s nothing like a nail salon visit to destress sometimes(and I’m not so good at painting my nails, so I always admire the work that they do). 10. Weekly goals: Calm. Down. Everything will work itself out. Don’t fret, enjoy! And get some errands done, drink more water. — is it just me, or do you think if a guy was writing “weekly goals”, it would be something along the lines of “eat. sleep. have a beer or two”.. Girls seem to be way more active/ambitious.

4. A challenge you’re working to overcome? I’m incredibly critical of myself, but I think it has only served me. I take myself very seriously, but I still have a great sense of humor, I believe. I am trying to have some patience with myself. If I offer it to others, I should offer it to myself as well.
5. Are you looking forward to anything this month? Being done with my classes? and nose surgery?
6. Truth or dare? Tough call…I am pretty transparent with people (not Larry David transparent, but still…). Although I do love a good dare…
7. When was the last time you freaked out about something?
8. What’s your favorite kind of weather? sunny spring days that aren’t too hot or humid.
9. What’s one of your favorite holiday treats? can’t really think of any at the moment. but the chocolate-mint things this time of year are great!
