- You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 198. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
- What’s the best way to treat/cure a cold?
- Your longest road trip?
- Something you enjoyed last weekend?
- What are the first things you notice about people when you meet them for the first time?
- Who taught you to drive?
- Your idols when you were a kid?
- Who’s the strongest person you know?
- Your favorite cold weather beverage?
- Weekly goals:
Not bad at all for a Monday. 🙂 And I bet I’ll feel even better once I get in a few miles on the treadmill. My inner night owl can’t believe I’m saying this, but I really am turning into a morning person.
I wish I knew, but if I can nip one in the bud as soon as I start feeling symptoms, I’ll usually feel better in a few days. I’m a firm believer in Cold-Eeze zinc lozenges, drinking tons of water with Emergen-C, skipping workouts and just taking it easy.
I’m not sure if it was the longest in terms of distance, but it sure felt like it. when I was 15 my parents loaded everyone up in the RV, and we went from the San Francisco Bay Area all the way up to Canada.
You know how it is when you’re that age, too, trapped in close quarters with your parents and no means of escape… Let’s just say that it was a very, very long trip.
Curling up on the couch under a blanket and watching a couple movies on TV, The Debt and Water for Elephants. Oh, I also had fun cruising Pier 1 for furniture and Christmas decorations.
Their eyes, and I always notice when they’re smiling. 🙂
My dad, God love him, and it was about as much fun as a root canal. Before my first lesson, my mom made huge signs that read “Student Driver” and tried to tape them to the car, but I fought her tooth and nail on it and eventually won…
I knew things weren’t going well when after 5 minutes my dad was already yelling that I was “DRIVING TOO FAST!” which I was, but in my defense the car had a broken speedometer.
After a day or so of this, he gave up and enrolled me in driving school, haha…
Outside of family, her Madge-esty, of course! And I also thought that Barbra Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters were pretty cool.
It’s a tie between my mom, my mother-in-law and my friend, Jen. All three are pretty tough ladies.
Please pass me a piping hot soy chai latte, please. Pronto!
Make some headway on a few writing projects, clean and organize my bookshelf, hang Tabs’ Christmas stocking, and soak up the holiday spirit!
Hey, hey, friend. I hope you had a nice weekend. Do you have a minute to let me know how you’re doing in today’s Monday Poll? I feel like we need to catch up.

Le List
1. Mood:
Not too bad for a Monday.
2. What’s the best way to treat/cure a cold?
Drink lots of water and get some rest. I’m lucky that I haven’t had a cold in a while, but the zinc lozenges definitely help when I first feel like I’m getting sick.
3. Your longest road trip?
This was not the longest in distance, but mentally it took forever. When I went to India a few years ago, we traveled from New Delhi to the town of Rishikesh where the Ganges river is. Road trips in India are not like the U.S. There are so many cars honking along with cows and horses and traffic “laws” are very loosely enforced. No one pays attention so the lines on the roads and they just drive in whatever lane they fancy.
4. Something you enjoyed last weekend?
Cupcakes! Even though it’s past Thanksgiving, I had some canned pumpkin left over that I used to make pumpkin cupcakes with cream cheese frosting.
5. What are the first things you notice about people when you meet them for the first time?
Their handshake. This is probably shallow, but I notice clothes – especially well dressed women, b/c I’ll secretly check for style inspiration. 🙂

My dad. I can relate with what you said about it being as fun as a root canal!
7. Your idols when you were a kid?
Hm, do bands count? I was pretty into Bon Jovi. 🙂
8. Who’s the strongest person you know?
Tie betwen my mom and sister-in-law.
9. Your favorite cold weather beverage?
Hot tea. I’m really digging the Sweet Coconut Thai. I have it almost every day at work. Thanks for the reccomendation!
10. Weekly goals:
Try and find some low impact exercises. I got shin splits from working too hard on the 30-Day Shred and I pushed myself when I should have rested. I hate to lose momentum, so I’m going to look for some pilates or yoga.
Happy Monday!
Karen says
Hi Ruchita,
Glad you are enjoying the Sweet Coconut Chai tea. 🙂 How do you drink yours? I like mine with milk and sugar.
Anywho, bummer that you got shin splints, but that’s great to hear you’ve been keeping up with your fitness goals. If you find any good pilates DVDs let me know! I need some core work.

I didn’t get to drop in yesterday afternoon, but just wanted to send a quick note about fighting a cold. As awful as it feels at the time (not to mention counter-intuitive) I find that nothing sends a cold packing as quickly as working out HARD when I feel it coming on. I don’t know if it super-charges those little white cells, or what. But, doing a good workout and sweating up a storm is my sure-fire cold fighter. Not to say that I always do it; I don’t always have the willpower and sometimes I just can’t resist jammies, a warm comforter and some quality nap time. Which does nothing for my cold, sadly. 🙂

1. Mood:
~Happy. Tomorrow’s my fiance’s birthday and I’m excited to treat him to some good stuff. Sorry this comment is late, worked all weekend and it was a rough one.
2. What’s the best way to treat/cure a cold?
~I work in 2 ER’s, and I’ve seen so many different ways to treat colds it’s not even funny. I personally am a believer that small doses of alcohol really helps kill colds and the flu. I don’t tell my patients my methods though. I believe in lots of Nyquil over the course of a few days, screwdrivers (orange juice with a small amount of vodka), and hot toddies (herbal or regular tea with honey and a small amount of whiskey). The key with this practice is moderation. You don’t want to use enough to be considered an alcoholic or drunkie. You use just enough to help you sleep at night and help symptoms. It works for me, and kills colds in a few days that normally take weeks to recover from.

7. Your idols when you were a kid?
~Some of these people are still my idols – Monty Roberts, renowned horse trainer/clinician; George Morris, Olympian and renowned horse trainer/clinician; anyone who worked in healthcare and/or veterinary practices; Karen and David O’Connor, Olympian equestrians in the sport of Eventing; and my parents.
