Quick, don’t over-think it! List three things you absolutely, positively love about makeup.
Here’s mine…
- I love how the littlest things — like a lipstick or gloss, or painting my nails — can totally improve my mood. When I’m having a cranky morning, I know that if I wash my face, do my hair and put on minimal makeup (maybe brows, mascara, concealer and blush), I’ll feel about a million times better. It’s almost guaranteed.
- Unlike that pair of size 0 jeans I wore when I was 19 but can no longer squeeze into, makeup always fits. I might be bloated on any given day, but it doesn’t mean a thing to that tube of MAC Russian Red. GAWD, I love that!
- Makeup brings people together. Corny? Yes! But it’s true! I’ve made and met so many friends at Sephora stores and makeup counters — friendships started over conversations about something as mundane as blush. Regular life is complicated enough as it is… Thank goodness for simple pleasures like blush. 🙂
What about you? What do you absolutely, positively love about makeup?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I love the confidence wearing it gives me.

1. When I’m having a bad day, I can do my makeup and it will make me feel better.
2. I can cover up imperfections and bad skin days.
3. I can play up what I like about myself.
4. It’s fun! Everything about it is fun. Shopping for it, testing it, experimenting with it. Talking about it!
Juvy says
Totally agree with you 🙂
Alison M says
1. Makeup let’s me spend at least 15 minutes a day doing something I truly enjoy. When I had three toddlers with me all day, those 15 minutes were everything.
2. Makeup (and shoes) never let me down. There is nothing like clothes shopping and finding nothing that actually fits. But red lipstick? Always there for me.
3. While tattoos and piercings are permanent, makeup isn’t. And even more so it doesn’t take a huge investment for the average person to have enough that truly let’s her play. I love to sport a style that matches my mood, then wash it off and start over.
Shannon says
1) I don’t *need* it. At first, I was like, “woah shannon, how is that something you can love about makeup?” But since it was the first thing that came to me, I thought about it… I mean, I certainly feel more put-together when I’m wearing makeup, and my eyes are more defined when I throw some mascara on my lashes, and there’s always that blemish that could use a little coverup… but I never, ever *need* it. And when you don’t need something, it never really becomes a chore. It always stays fun and dynamic. And I love that about makeup.
2) I get to be creative. Depending on how much time I have to get ready, I can be as minimalist or as makeup-crazy as I want. And I love when I come up with an eyeshadow combo or lip/cheek look that I hadn’t thought of before, that just goes BAM. I don’t consider myself highly creative outside the realm of music, so it makes me feel WAY accomplished when I have those bursts of inspiration! 🙂
3) Makeup (especially the nice stuff) definitely feels like a luxury to me – so I feel just a little bit “luxurious” whenever I wear it. I love that I can just throw on some blush and feel expensive, haha!
JoJo says
Yup…my sentiments exactly on all of these 3 points.
I also agree with Mallory B’s 4 point:
“4. It’s fun! Everything about it is fun. Shopping for it, testing it, experimenting with it. Talking about it!”
Erin says
1. It makes me feel more put together, and helps me be more self-assured. I think it helps me out with feeling confident and prepared in professional situations.
2. It helps me keep some of my flaws to myself. I know everyone has some, I’d just rather I keep ’em hidden sometimes.
3. I was never bold enough to get tattooed or dye my hair unnatural colors, but I do like to play with bolder colors in my makeup, so it’s definitely fun for me. It’s fun to change it up day to day, and I can use it to show something about my personality.
Natalie says
1. How much fun it is to apply, starting the day with makeup always makes it better.
2. The colors! The options are endless, and beautiful.
3. It really does being people together, like good food.
Trisha says
1. I can make myself look however I want, just by what colors and techniques I choose to use.
2. It’s FUN. It’s basically like painting. Art. You paint on your face, and that’s fun. 😀
3. I get to express my cheerful mood through colorful eye shadow. I’m a super colorful person, and makeup helps me express that.
kiwikiwidragon says
That its an expression.
I love that I can wear it and my husband loves it, married 13 years, he’s not one of those guys that tries to tell u that you look better without it.
That its my thing and I don’t have to share it with anyone else. 🙂
Amanda says
Now that you mention it, I’m grateful that my husband doesn’t try to dissuade me from wearing makeup. He’ll gladly gift me with a Sephora card. I don’t want to be guilted either way (I’m talking to you, Dove “real beauty”).
kiwikiwidragon says
My hubbs has always been into made up ladies, uber goth, glamour, avant garde, etc….although I am none of those things, maybe a little edgy/goth, he doesn’t mind a bare face either. I prefer to have some makeup on in public, its not critical if we needed to be somwhere in a hurry. I never trust that saying “you look better without all that stuff”, that’s jealousy talking, my husband likes to feel proud of us as a couple, if that makes sense.
Kiss & Make-up says
I love how make-up can help you express yourself and be your own unique person.
I love how it can boost your confidence.
I love how it can bring out the best in you.
Eva says
I really like the way I look with even just a little make-up on. I don’t think I actually need it, but I sure like it. I don’t work with customers and my company has no dress code, so I can put on as much or as little as I like. I can make myself look soft or fierce, girly or all femme fatale, whatever I feel like. And if I don’t feel like anything special, I can just look like myself, only a little better.
Chelsea says
I love it as an artistic and creative outlet. I used to do a lot of painting, but at some point I switched from canvas to skin. I love doing my makeup, so it’s not really a chore (like doing hair, which I hate), it’s a great way to start my day after skincare (which is also something I love doing).
Makeup and skincare are fun ways to pamper myself every day.
It washes off! If you make a mistake, it’s not the end of the world, and it is a lot more fixable than a lot of other personal creative outlets (tattoos, hairstyles, etc).
I can try out all different kind of looks without a huge investment!

I love your point about bringing people together. Your blog and a lot of others brings together like-minded people who can forge a lasting friendship over something that many people see as trivial. My friendships with the awesome people I worked in cosmetics with are lasting.

1) Variety. I love that I can do something different everyday. There will always be a new look, color or product that I want to try. That keeps me interested.
2) I’ve been an adult for awhile now, but makeup still seems like a privilege. I feel like a real lady when I’m made up.
3)Makeup appeals to my artistic sensibilities. I love to add color and visual appeal!

just the other day i was queuing for an atm (it was a loooong queu, somebody haven’t heard about ONLINE banking. sigh), and the girl right behind me had really great brows. i asked her eyeliner she used for her brows and it’s a local brand i used to use way back when, and sort of just leave behind as i move up in the makeup world. so definitely what i love about makeup:
1. a cool hobby that unites cool people!
2. relatively inexpensive
3. temporary! you can erase and paste as many times as you want, for that perfect result!

karen what I like ‘are the bases of face, I think amazing how they transform into dignity and without dignity
But I can not stop talking about my passion for palettes and brushes, love everything
A great big kiss for you and the cat divo Tabs

After working a sixty with a bunch of men I have to butch out with, makeup is my little isle of feminine sanity. Rather I’m rocking rockabilly red lips, punk purple hair, or innocent peach blushes , beauty gives me an outlet to be me and sometimes a bit more.
Amanda Marie says
Three things I love about makeup, I never really thought about it. Buying new makeup almost gives me the same rush as winning a prize or money.
1. There are so many colors, flavors, smells and textures all makeup is unique in its own way. I also love how the packaging is too.
2. I love the compact sizes it comes in, perfect for my trips to Florida and on the plane for touch ups! That reminds me ..Are the Benefit beauty vendor machines samples, travel sized or full sized?
3. I love the rush I get when I see the new beautiful colors or when they throw a cute sample in my bag to try out, the new products that come out and the way that the makeup industry is always growing. You can never go wrong with a little makeup. People always say I have too much makeup and I say “You can never have enough of something you collect and love.”
PianoGirl1985 says
1. I can be my own artist and try a gazzilion looks. Just like putting on different masks every day!
2. I love doing makeup for my girlfriends and making their day. They always feel special and I love making them feel glamorous.
3. It just makes me happy. Perhaps it is a border line vanity for some people, but for me it is a fascination with colors and textures. That in just a few minutes I can give myself a new face and feel good about it.
kim says
i love the creativity of it. i am, by no means, a makeup artist, but i feel like i have improved so much over the couple years i have really been into makeup. i also love how it can transform your face to match your look. i used to feel like a little kid in a costume if i had to wear a suit for work, or a really sparkly dress to go out. but the right makeup can make you look like you belong in something you arent used to wearing all the time. i love that feeling you get when your makeup is ‘perfect’ and you cant stop looking at it! i think is also adds variety. i dont have a TON of different clothes, but i dont feel like i am in a rut if i can try new makeup combos everyday. and i have more than enough makeup in my collection for that!
Catherine S. says
What do I love about makeup? Well, it’s complicated: I was a makeup artist and trainer for a large cosmetic company for 23 years but here’s the short version:
1. Everything: the colors, the textures, the scents, the sound of a lipstick tube or compact closing.
2. I love best of all putting makeup on someone I love. Second best, a stranger.
3. I love that it’s not permanent: it’s paint! It’s drama, it’s fun, it’s comedy, it’s solace. It can be wiped off.

Like several have already said, I feel instantly more confident and put together when I’m wearing makeup. I might skip makeup on a weekend day, but I when I do, I never feel as pretty as I do with even a little concealer, swipe of mascara, and quick gloss. I also like that it washes off; no commitment if I mess up or dislike a product. I love looking at all the colors and changing things up according to my clothes and the season. Me and makeup definitely go together!

I’m a new follower and this seemed a good post to introduce myself. What do I love about Makeup? I love the aesthetics of it. The cute packaging, the colours, the smell. Just the idea of owning a beautiful object. I have been known to buy something because it was so pretty and then hardly using it. Also, I could never afford a Chanel suit, but I can buy one of their lipsticks. I love scents too. It’s such a lovely little luxury and I really feel I am getting a treat. I get soo excited when an order of makeup or perfume arrives in the post.

I like makeup just fine, but I spend the majority of my dollars on professional dermatology/esthetician services and really good skin care. I like the confidence of foundation free skin. If I’m hanging out at home I never wear makeup. If I go out shopping, etc. I do a basic face that I’ve perfected to enhance my features. I don’t do much variation on eye shadows (I stick with naturals…browns, beiges, taupes, etc.) but I do like a nice bright, rich colorful lipstick. It brightens up my face and draws attention to my nice smile. I find when I’m dressed nicely and have on “my face” people are so much more friendly and helpful. That makes the effort worth it!
Rina says
1. I love the colors, eyeshadow especially.
2. I love shopping for it and swatching and finding deals. The hunt is almost more fun than the acquisition 🙂
3. In house full of males, it feels nice to have something that is all mine mine mine….
Beauty Bee says
It brings colour into my day and sometimes its colour that can cheer us up! 😀
I also love collecting goodies, be it gorgeously packaged makeup, to colourful lipsticks and velvety powders 🙂

I love experimenting with new makeup looks and trying new colours and products. It makes me feel confident when I’m wearing a red lipstick or a smokey eye.

1)I love that it’s my own private meditation and study and is unique to me (blush, colours etc look different on everyone) I can lose myself in online research, looking at beauty blogs and reviews of products before I purchase. It’s my own little hobby/passion which now because of smartphones- I can find like minded people to talk/read about products with whenever I want-rather than uninterested friends. I never stop learning and new formulations and products are always coming out-it’s so exciting!
2) it’s always new. … even if you’ve used that blush a hundred times-it can be different every time, depending on your tan, complexion, outfit, combination of other products etc. A beautiful product, like the by terry liquid blush or hourglass ambient lighting powder- is exciting to use eachtime because its quality and luxe and use that energy and memory when applying it. Its never boring.
3) a beautifully applied makeup can change your mood snd and how you tackle the day. My palette is mostly natural tones, and my technique is to enhance rather than alter my features-so even though it’s nit usually a dramatic difference-making the effort to polish oneself can be compared to having a Ferrari’s paint job waxed and buffed. It’s a Ferrari-bug at it’s best 😉
