Seven Random Things You Didn’t Know about Karen at Makeup and Beauty Blog
1. I love all types of music. I hoard mp3s, and have songs that span all genres and eras. I realized last night that I had absolutely no Phil Collins songs in my music library, and for some reason this REALLY REALLY REALLY bothered me. So the first thing I did this morning was download “Billy, Don’t You Lose My Number,” “Sususudio,” and “Easy Lover.” I feel a bit more complete now.
For many years the real lyrics to the chorus in the song Invisible Touch (“She seems to have that invisible touch, yeah!”) eluded me.
2. I collect quotes that I like. I keep them in a quote journal and when I need inspiration I flip through the pages and read through them. Here are seven of my favorites:
“Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.”
–T.S. Elliot.
” You are a warrior, and you are not to turn your back on the battlefield.”
–Suze Orman
“I tell you one lesson I learned
If you wanna be something in life
You ain’t gonna get it unless
You give a little bit of sacrifice.”
–The Roots
“There is a vitality, a life-force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it.
It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.”
–Martha Graham in “Dance to the Piper”
This is my favorite picture of Martha Graham. I had it on my bedroom wall for many years.
“…rewriting is the essence of writing.”
–William Zinsser
“God has bigger plans for you than you could ever imagine for yourself.”
–Oprah Winfrey
“Life is terrific.”
–Random sticker in the laundry room
3. I drink lots of coffee. If I don’t I become very grumpy, especially in the morning.

5. I believe everyone should have a theme song! Your theme song can change depending on where you are in life or what you need at the moment. Currently mine is Jay-Z’s “Dirt Off Your Shoulder.”
6. I write travel articles, and if you’ve recently taken a cruise to Hawaii on one of the major cruise lines (Princess, Norweigan Cruise Lines) you might’ve read the hardcover book in your cabin with different stories on things to do and places to see in Hawaii. There’s a high probability of you reading something I wrote!
7. I like buying accessories, especially earrings, bracelets and hats.

Hi Christine,
Why so angry driving? 🙂 How was class, btw?
Do you still play piano (I played too, from 4-16, mostly against my will)?
Karen says
Hi Lovie,
Hmmm… I could’ve sworn I saw you RAISE YER HANDS IN THE AIR WAVE THEM ROUND LIKE YOU JUST DON’T CARE the last time I saw you dancing.
You are too funny, XOXO!
Christine says
No clue, I’ve just been told I’m an angry driver! I guess I get easily annoyed by everybody else on the road. Class was super boring! As per usual.
I don’t play much anymore, as I don’t have a piano and haven’t had one around really since I went away to undergrad three years ago. I hated it for a long time, but in the end I’m glad I learned!
Karen says
Oh gawd, you’d hate driving in my hood. There’s a lot of entitled-acting drivers. I never flipped so many people off unti I moved here!
I feel the same way about the pianny. Plus, it gave me some crazy strong hands!
Did they call on you in class, like they show law school in the movies?
Christine says
Haha! Living in SoCal is what turned me into an aggressive and angry driver, I think.
I was on-call, which means she calls on 3-4 people only, and I’m one of them! I flubbed once, but I made sure to raise my hand to respond to another question to make up for it. But I was so embarrassed, I think I was blushing even!

my theme song now is kanye’s Good Life f/ T-Pain uh the chorus and edited version lol.. “I go for mine, I’ve got to shine, throw your hands up in the sky!” “haterz give me those salty looks, lawry’s” LOL i love it!
fav quote (very well known by marianne williamson): “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.â€
just like listening to Dr. MLK’s speech “I have a dream” I get teary eye reading this quote…
Karen says
Hi Kia,
I LOVE THAT QUOTE. I have it in my quote book, too. And I agree, “I have a dream” makes me teary too. I had a copy of several sections up on my wall for many years.
And speaking of that Kanye song…I LOVE IT TOO! I was driving around yesterday with my windows down and my sunroof open while I was listening to it. What a *great* theme song!
Karen says
Hi Andrea,
I’ve been married for a lil’ over a year too (just celebrated our first wedding anniversary in July!). Congrats to you and your hubby, yay!
I think your job sounds really neat. I don’t follow a lot of sports, so I know this is probably going to sound lame, but I’ve become really fascinated with pro football as of late. I’m a runner, so I really appreciate when football players HAUL ASS while other big scary dudes chase them down and try to knock them over. On our run yesterday my hubby and I talked at length about track recruits in the NFL, ha!
And thank you so much for your wonderful comments about the blog. I’m glad that I can make your workday a lil bit more enjoyable…and that I can feed your MAC habit (DOH!) too! Have a fantastic day!
Karen says
Christine, that sounds stressful! How often do you have to be on-call like that? I guess it forces you to do the reader, yikes!
Christine says
It’s only for 2 classes (one week), and I guess once a semester? I hope!
Sarah says
I know this is a little late, but I was reading your archives as I just recently found your blog (which I LOVE), and thought I would contribute.
1. Sometimes I feel like the only girl in my small town in Canada who likes beauty and spends several hours a day obsessing over it (or maybe it is just that we are all in the closet!)
2. Even though I am training to be an environmental lawyer (very serious!) I LOVE to watch trashy tv like Maury.
3. Though I am in my thirties and married I often feel like I am playing at being grownup, instead of actually being one.
4. I lived with my Mom until I was 25.
5. I love McDonald’s and could possibly eat it every day.
6. Until recently, I suffered from horrible panic attacks, but hid them from everyone I knew.
7. I don’t want to have children but am afraid that if I tell anyone then they will think I am less of a woman.
Finally, an additional comment – sometimes I want to chuck all of my serious environmental lawyer aspirations (despite being 95% done) and become involved full time in the beauty industry somehow (because beauty products, routines and skincare FASCINATE me)
Karen says
Hi Sarah!
I’m so happy you introduced yourself. I’m glad you enjoy the site and it’s very nice to meet you! I get several reader e-mails from my girls up in Canada! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; I loves me some Canada. 🙂
Congrats on all your work towards becoming an environmental lawyer. I’m sure that after you graduate you’ll be able to do some really amazing, significant things. And like you, even though I do serious stuff, I like traaaaashy TV too. I’m on pins and needles waiting for the next episode of “I Love NY 2,” LOL.
It’s funny, I am 32, and in many ways I am technically a grown up (married, pay bills, job) I feel like I’m pretending to be one too. I mean, I remember thinking that anything past 30 was ancient. Besides the occasional creaky knee and the lower tolerance for B.S. I still feel pretty young.
Hope to see ya back soon! Have a good week! 🙂
