Shu Uemura Égérie False Eyelashes, $30
Good mornin’, girls! 🙂 Ah… I don’t have the words to describe how happy I am that it’s Friday. Even though I blog and freelance every day of the week, I take it easier on the weekends, so TGIF!
For some strange reason, I’m thinking about wearing false eyelashes today, but their application is a skill I have yet to master. They end up crooked, the glue gets all over the place, I smudge my eye makeup — it ain’t a pretty sight!
ONE of these years, I’ll figure it out.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Michelle says
I’ve never even tried falsies because I am afraid to try to put them on. But as I get older, my eyelashes seem a little more sparse — so it looks like a skill I need to learn!
Karen says
Me too. I might make it my summer project this year. 🙂
Happy Friday!
Stefania says
Hi Karen,
I’m not an expert, but it’s not so difficult. Check on YouTube, there are a lot of videos about how to apply false eyelashes! 🙂 I learnt many usefull tips!
Katie says
I know that feeling…be careful, because when you start using false lashes, it’s hard to go back! I use them on the weekends when I go out. They make a huge difference and look so pretty.
Rae says
Karen, I absolutely love those lashes. I’ve been lemming them since I saw photos of this collection a few months ago. What are your thoughts on them?
Lu says
I’m freakishly good at putting on falsies. Don’t know why. Steady hands maybe? What I do is I put glue on a toothpick, put some on the lashes, wait a few seconds (like 20) the bend them in the middle, look straight ahead in the mirror and line the middle up with my pupil. Without fear I put them right up against my lashline, then gently put them across the rest of the eye. I put them on before makeup. This keeps it from smudging your makeup. Do my eye makeup, then line the falsies with some liner and off I go. I’ll have to post a video sometime.

Karen says
Thanks for the tips, Lu. I’ll have to try lining up the middle with my pupil.
Have a good day. 🙂
Kelly says
I have never really tried false lashes other than for Halloween.
I love the concept of fake lashes, but I would be totally paranoid to wear them on any day other than Halloween. I am positive I would be sitting on BART and have everyone hella staring at me only to discover once I got to work that they were halfway off, lol!

I’ve never tried false lashes. I’m curious sometimes but I a real noob when it comes to applying them. I would love to have that seductive look….but I guess not all of us are talented 🙂
Rachel says
I’ve never tried false lashes because I’m so afraid of putting them on. Does anyone know if Sephora or a MAC counter, etc. can show you how to put them on?
Tatiana says
I have sooo many pairs. I just like how they look in the package! I’ve been trying to wear more of them though. I’m getting the hang of it. It helps when you use tweezers.
Vanessa H says
I can do a good job when I’m just playing with them…if I actually want to wear them to go out, it takes me forever!

You have to put the glue in TWO places to apply strip lashes. Here’s my technique:

It works!
Lucy says
I’ve perfected it over the years because my natural lashes are so teeny, falsies are practically necessity! x

Yeah, I think this is a skill I want to complete by year’s end.

I’m hit or miss, but I find that the lash band can’t be too flimsy or I’ll risk having lashes all over my lid LOL.
I have one pair of lashes from Shu — it’s my baby — and I find that the band on that is much stiffer and is easier to work with. Plus, it’s a freakin’ work of art!
I just use my fingers… I definitely think using tweezers would be the easiest for accuracy, but I don’t own slanted tweezers, only a pointed tip one. 🙂

At one point I put on false lashes almost time I go out at night or sometime even during the day. I would like to think that I pretty good at it. Although I still need to learn to apply it actually on the lash line, I am almost always a few millimetres off, which annoys me to pieces, even if most people don’t notice unless they go up really close, I know it is off a bit.

Ive successfully applied false eyelashes on myself TWICE. Thats it. The rest of the times the lashes look like they will fall off …. or they do fall off.
Maybe its time to master the art of falsies. 😛
Jen says
I’ve never tried applying falsies, but I do want to try… Maybe this summer, when I have more time 😛
GeriBerry says
I’m pretty good at putting falsies on. If I don’t feel like being too fussy I’ll only apply half of a lash to the outer corner of each eye… it’s so much easier than having to worry about the entire length. Plus you get two pairs of lashes instead of one when you cut them in half 🙂
Katie says
I used to always get the Duo glue in my eyes, but after 3 years of false lashes every weekend, yes, I would attempt it in the dark 😀 !
Marce says
I don’t wear falsies, but the times I did it was like my vote…hit or miss. The first time was a disaster, I was battling with the damn strip for about an hour, LOL! Now I can do it a bit better. Sometimes I just stick the thing on and it stays put (and on my lash line, not my eyebrow), so I suppose with practice you just get better 😀

I’ve never tried them!
Everyone thinks my real lashes look fake when I wear mascara, so what’s the point?
Though, I do want to learn how to use them properly, so I can apply them on others.

omg every special ocassion that comes around i say “alright im finally gonna wear false lashes this time!!!” and then i look at them in the packaging and think “oh well, maybe for the next fancy event cause im gonna take forever trying to put these on” aaand then, the next one comes and i think the same thing lol. plus my hands are too shaky! and knowing my luck they would end up on my cheek and i would walk around like that all day
Solé says
Hi Karen! Happy Friday! I voted hit or miss because I’ve applied them perfectly more than a few times, but I still struggle if I’m in a hurry or if it’s too warm (my last apartment was improperly ventilated). Trying to apply falsies when you’re sweating is a nightmare. I also have a hard time with the glue that comes with pricier lashes. Nothing works for me like the cheap drugsore glue to keep them in place all night. 😀
angie says
those shu lashes look SO amazing! too bad they cost a hefty $30 if you bought these you MUST show us how they look 🙂
Inky says
to start learning application skills, try half lashes – buy a cheapo pair of lashes at the drug store and cut them in half, or buy already made “half” lashes. since they are smaller in length than a full strip, it’s easier to learn with this and I think the result is often even prettier than a full strip. don’t be afraid to trim full strips to fit either, all eyelashes are not created to fit all eyelids!
I put tiny dollop of clear eyelash adhesive on a tissue and let it sit for a couple of minutes. Then i take my half lash and holding each side, give it a little curve to fit your eye shape (sometimes they are stick straight even after you removed them from their box). using the end of a brush or a toothpick or some such thing like that, apply a thin line of the slightly tacky lash adhesive to the lash strip. blow on it for a few seconds to tack it up even more. using tweezers apply the lash to as near as you can to the lash line. by now the adhesive is pretty tacky so it should stick straight away and dry quickly. push the edges down as needed. I apply my lashes after I have all my shadow and liner on but you can do it before as well, whatever your preference.
redo the process for lash two. if your original dollop of adhesive is too dry by this point then put another dollop down and go for it, but once you get fast enough, one dollop will do ya!
good luck, lashes are super fun. i’ve got a set of shu red/black fin lashes i’m dying to try.
Audrey says
It’s so much easier to apply them on other people but on myself? Hit or miss, for sure! I don’t know how people do it. I can get them on but it’s hard to get them exactly the same way on both eyes!

I’m pretty good at it (or maybe I should say WAS, since I had my daughter I don’t wear them as much as I used to). For some reason all my friends suck at it and I always have to help them 🙂
Frances says
I confess, I have read tons of how to articles, but I have never tried. I don’t think I have anywhere to wear them.
Stef says
A tip I got from a Shu counter that really works if your falsie challenged is to apply them while looking into a mirror BENEATH you. Meaning, have a mirror lower than your head (a pedestal mirror turned at an angle under your chin or a mirror laying on a flat surface below you). When you look down, you have a clear view of your lash line. I think you actually blink less too.
Works like a charm!

I can’t seem to get them on right. I either use too much glue and can’t get them on the lash line or they won’t stick on. I am going to keep trying though.
jana says
you know what helped me a lot? sephora has this fake eyelash kit for i think $25… (i know, kind of costly) but it comes with this application tool that kind of looks like an eyelash curler and it’s amazing! just put the fakies in it, hold and apply! i’ve tried the looking down with mirror below and what other vid tutorials have said… but with this lil’ gimmick i can look straight forward in the mirror and do it!

Oh man, I LOVE false eyelashes. If I could I would wear them everyday and hone my eyelash applying skillzz but alas, they get in the way of my eye glasses which is a pain when I drive. [DANG NEARSIGHTEDNESS]
I think it depends on the band for me. Invisible to very thin are the easy peasy to apply. Just set the glue, stick to the center of your lashline, wait for it to get tacky, then stick the ends into place. Thick bands however are my enemy. Idk if it’s my lack of a real lid or what but besides them being a pain to flex around and fit the shape of my eye THEY HURT :[
One of these days a pair of crazy Shu falsies will be mine <3 one of these days…

I’m okay at applying them. I try to apply it as close to my lashline, but I don’t always get it. Sometimes I have to take them off and reapply them.

I’ve never applied them to myself, but this discussion has intriged me. One question though, are false lashes single-use, if not how do you keep them hygenic/ glue gunk free?
SilhouetteScreams says
I’ve never tried, though I can’t imagine it would go down well. I really should try false lashes though, because mine are so stumpy and thin! 🙁

I mastered the art of falsies the night of my 21st birthday (you can imagine the state I was in) and have managed to never mess them up. Best tip I’ve got is to wrap them around your pinky finger for like twenty-five seconds to get a curve in them so they lay nicely over your lashline and then trim any excess lash bit by bit until you’ve got a perfect fit. Also, keep your eye open when you’re putting them on and hold them firmly at each end and just go for it. I also second (third/fourth?) the suggestion of putting some glue on a toothpick or Q-tip or something… just a dot and then hold them on one end and drag them gently through so you don’t get them too gooped up. 😀
Those lashes are hella cute, though! Good luck!
Hyzenthlay says
I thought you might have a category along the lines of “I suck, just SUCK at applying false lashes.” Of course, I’ve read that the ones I have tried (Revlon) aren’t easy for newbies to apply because the band is so flexible. But, I’m not willing to spend the money on the more expensive ones 🙂
Britney says
I so love fake lashes, but have not used them unless someone else put them on for me. Usually a MAC Makeup Artist…… But they do look gorgeous and really make your eyes look glamorous. I so need to practice with them…I would wear them all the time if I could put them on myself….
Celine says

I’ve always been kind of scared of false lashes – A friend of mine ripped half of her real eyelashes off! However, I do love the look that false eyelashes give! I’m hoping to buy some MAC false eyelashes soon, they’re just so expensive!
