It’s still technically summer here in the U.S. — summer — but the holiday makeup collections are already showing up!
I went to Ulta the other day to grab a tube of Urban Decay Naked Skin One & Done and saw holiday stuff from Benefit on display.
I can totally appreciate wanting to get a jump on your holiday shopping and trying to get everything done waaay before the Christmas craziness, but holiday collections in summer? Isn’t that kinda cray?
I joke about Christmas in July, but seriously, it’s only matter of time before that actually happens, LOL!
How do you feel about holiday collections coming out this early? Does it get you excited to hear the word “holiday,” or does it make you feel kinda grumpy?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Generally speaking, I am a total Grinch about any Christmas stuff happening before December 1. I actually enforced a rule for that at a former job, otherwise my coworkers would’ve started cranking the holiday tunes the day after Halloween (insert eye roll here).
That said, I like seeing the holiday makeup and nail collections early. Christmas is a spendy time, and (sadly) I always have a limited beauty budget. Seeing the collections now gives me time to ponder the options and make my purchases before Christmas budgeting sets in – and in time for me to put anything I can’t afford/justify on my list for the outlaws.
It helps that the holiday collections aren’t usually explicitly holiday themed; it’s not like you’re carrying around a Rudolph encrusted compact at Thanksgiving, right?

I feel like Tabs- grumpy. Is he really posing his resting bish face? I mean, I can see getting a jump on your holiday shopping list, especially if you’re tryna stock up on end of the summer sales. But something about holiday releases ahead of Fall make me wanna say ba-hum-bug. Then again, Aunt Flo came today. So there’s that…

I do feel like Christmas collections are coming out earlier and earlier every year. They are all cute and all but I want to enjoy one season at a time! It’s not even fall yet!

While I do find holiday collections are coming out earlier, I don’t necessarily mind since my birthday is mid-October and by then I have lost most of my summer color. I usually get my new foundation/concealer and other face products. I also like that sometimes deluxe skincare is released, I know Bobbi usually offers them. I can make some nice purchases with birthday money. I haven’t gotten any new eye products since late Spring, so I am looking forward to seeing what the eyeshadow palettes will be. I will also be ready for a richer, lip color, so I’m good. We don’t really do much holiday shopping anyway.

I’m kind of torn with this, on the one hand it was literally 40 degrees yesterday (104 F) so I’m not even in the mindset for winter let alone christmas/holiday related things. But on the otherhand I like knowing what is going to be released/what will be available during the holiday season. Having releases happen this earlier makes it easier to plan out my spending and it’s nice to have a little bit of a buffer time-wise to prevent some of those impulse purchase regrets

We had it in august, which seemed too soon.

It was 93F (34C) yesterday. I don’t want to see holiday stuff when it’s still summer. If all this stuff is limited edition and gone by the time I start my shopping in November so be it. I will just have to buy something else as gifts. I’m trying really hard to not buy into the “it’s limited edition so you need to rush out and buy it” trend. The more these companies try ways to get me to part with my hard earned money, the more I’m resisting. My Dear Husband hates to spend money. Ever. I’m starting to feel his miserly ways rub off on me.

It’s sad because by the time the holiday season is here a lot of the more popular palettes are sold out. Now they will definitely be sold out sooner. I heard that the Too Faced Peach palette will be on sale again around the holiday season. Where I live it didn’t even hit the shelves for it’s launch at Sephora!
Melissa Valdez says
That is so true! I hate it when they sell out so quick.

I have to admit that I’m way too excited about the holiday collections release!!! I hung out on sephora france’s snapchat today and OMG I can’t wait to see all this makeup!!! Especially the too faced xmas collection!!!!
Melissa Valdez says
While it does get me excited to know the holidays are around the corner, I still would like to wait to see Christmas stuff after Thanksgiving. I will buy good deals ahead of time if I see them, but I try to limit buying things till the Christmas season hits.
Melissa Valdez says
Karen, did you see the cute Kitty lip gloss at Sephora? I am getting three if I can. One for each of my granddaughters.

I think there is such a thing as too early. Putting them out in August is too early.
I think some people can benefit from a head start. I tend to be forgetful, so having more time to shop for gifts helps me. Also, bloggers who are not on PR lists could use access to early launches because we need time to swatch and review while the products are still available.

Although there is so much new makeup right now I still like having the Holiday collections available early. It seems to me the mad dash around the holidays wasn’t as bad last year because you didnt have everyone trying to grab the more popular items, which normally there is never enough of, at the same time. This way companies have more time to do a few restocks of the more coveted items before the season is over. It’s a win win in my book!!

This is going to be hippy dippy but I love it! And it’s “holiday” not “Christmas” so I don’t see the big deal since Halloween is just around the corner and Halloween is A BIG holiday for makeup artists and makeup enthusiasts! Let all the new Holiday makeup rain on me! Nom nom nom.

I love the holidays! The holiday gift sets are such good value so it’s always a joy to know they’re out. The products aren’t just for the holidays, I can use them anytime. The sets also give me the chance to try something I otherwise wouldn’t have purchased.

I’m with you here and would caution fellow marketers that putting holiday out in summer can be more than a disconnect or downer. Sometimes it actually makes me feel like it’s REALLY old, clearance product. Like, didn’t sell during last holiday season and is still sitting here. I logically know that’s not the case but it does make the items seem outdated or less appealing. I’m a traditionalist and think holiday should wait until after Halloween. And I don’t look at it until after Thanksgiving, anyway. 🙂

I get really upset when I see holiday collections coming out so early. And no need to joke about Christmas in July, that’s a pretty common promotion I saw this summer. I so look forward to autumn and winter, so when I go to the store and see Halloween and Christmas decorations sitting side by side, it ruins the magic a bit. In terms of beauty collections, I’m so tired of the “MUST GET NOW THERE ARE ONLY TEN OF THESE PALETTES/LIPPIES/ETC AVAILABLE” trend. I saw a number of brands release some nice permanent products this year, which I appreciate, so I’m hoping that since people just aren’t spending as much on makeup anymore we see an investment in bringing out more high-quality permanent products and fewer of the hype-filled limited editions.

Makeup sales are way down. MAC has been doing lay offs in their pro stores. Macy’s Impulse sales ladies have told me it has been dead. They are saying the makeup craze is either over or has really faded out. Companies are desperate to get business , hence why you are seeing everything so early
Elena says
Part of me gets really excited for the holiday stuff but I think October is the earliest stuff should come out. I mean some true holiday (like Christmas stuff) was coming out in August. Crazy!
On the other hand, I get really antsy for Halloween and can’t wait til places like Target get their Halloween stuff set up. But the holiday/christmas stuff can wait. It’s too early!!
Bcteagirl says
Too early! I agree with the poster who wrote about a disconnect. These no longer feel like christmas sets, they somehow lose part of their appeal. It feels more like a money grab than holiday spirit (And yes, I know it is a money grab in the first place). Frankly it makes me less interested in them.
