I’ve lost loads of makeup and had plenty of individual pieces go MIA over the years. I’m sure Tabs has something to do with it some of the time, because he likes to bat things around into nooks and crannies under dressers, beds and into the hidden corners of closets, but as far as losing an entire makeup bag, not yet (*knocks on wood*).
Not sure if this counts, but once a long time ago a makeup order I made online arrived looking like someone somewhere between where it started its journey and got to me went through the entire package picking out their favorites! BOO!
I have heard nightmare stories from friends who’ve had their makeup bags stolen. I ran into a buddy at Sephora a while back who was there buying makeup because her car had been broken into while she was out hiking, and the crook took her fully stocked makeup bag.
She was like, “I can understand why they wanted the wallet, but used blush and lipstick? That’s just cold.”
Have you ever lost your makeup bag or had it stolen?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Happy hump day. 🙂

Never stolen but lost, along with my luggage on a trip to Paris several years ago. Shopping for makeup in Paris was fun but the clothes was whole other sad/awful story (I’m a plus size gal and you get the picture = plus size gal shopping for clothes in Paris, HAHA).

I read your comment, and I just have to tell you that this is one of my worst fears. I’m a 2x and when I travel to Europe I’m usually visiting my (size 4) mother-in-law and sister- in- law. I’m not sure how I would handle it if they had to try to find a store that would be able to fit me.
On the other hand, I’ll bet that would be a great business to be in – overnighting plus size clothes to women in Europe!
Nessa says
Oh, I am rght there with you on shopping for clothes in Paris. I tred that once and it was a nightmare. I never want to repeat that experience.

I also have lost many individual pieces…also due to pets (German Shepherd dog eating my EOS lemon drop lip balm…twice!!) but I’ve never had an entire bag stolen. Heck, the shape that the makeup is in- who would want to steal that? That just nasty…
I, have, however had an entire shipment of The Balm products go “missing” in the mailroom. I’m talking full collection here – blush, nail polish, lipstick, highlighter, pallettes!! Needless to say, someone who works for the post service is walking around with beautifully highlighted cheekbones and full looking lips at my expense!
On a side note, I’ve been absent this blog for a few years now and I gotta say….it’s nice to be around people who would grieve their makeup bag as much as their purse. Good to hear (read) your voice again!

Yep and I always find it after I stock up on a new one! So annoying!

eeew! who steals someone else’s make up?! so sad. i don’t carry around make up, because i don’t do touch ups throughout the day. i might start doing that, though: the heat is melting everything! so i haven’t lost a make up bag. although, i did lose my DL, debit card, and camera at last year’s oktoberfest. i’m still sad over that. 🙁
i have yet to visit MAC. 🙁 the heat wave is making me dread going anywhere. i’m adding these snazzy bags to my list, though! karen and tabs, you two are convincing me to add more to my make up routine and collection. 🙂
happy hump day to you, as well! have you seen that geico commercial with the camel in the office? i crack up every time it comes on the television.
Agata says
Nope, I haven’t. I have never had anything stolen in my life *knocks on the wood*. But my friend had her make up bag/hair bag stolen with lots of expensive make up, she had to start her collection all over.
Happy Wednesday!

Oh nooo I feel so sorry for your buddy who had her makeup bag stolen! I carry minimal makeup around, so if I lose it it’ll be a couple of lipsticks, a pressed Guerlain Meteorites compact, my aromatherapy roll-on for headaches (though man, I’d HATE to lose it because I can’t replace it here), oil-blotting sheets and so on. It’ll still be a really sad day though. Imagine I happen to be carrying a beloved LE lipstick *hyperventilates*
Carrie says
Had to ask what aromatherapy roll-on you use for headaches?

I left my “makeup” bag in the hotel after my best friend’s wedding. I remembered just as I was pulling out of the parking lot…funny when I called the front desk, because the cleaning lady was going into my room as I left, she couldn’t find the ginourmous bag with all my makeup and brushes! I had over 30 single MAC eyeshadows not counting my whole brush roll…sad brought all makeup to do wedding makeup and yeah. When I went up to the room the cleaning lady had left and was no where to be found! I swear she took my makeup…all of it. Lost my favorite MAC eye shadow Heavenly Bliss…and it didn’t get brought back last year.

What an interesting concept.. who would steal someone’s makeup case? So strange to me but I totally understand how upsetting that would be for us beauty junkies! I found things that work for me and would hate to have those lost/stolen.
I always tend to lose brand new products, sometimes I never even got to open them, and then months later I find them in my room, still in the packaging and it’s like getting a present.
My mother always tells me how had her makeup bag stolen in high school and the way she got it back was that she knew every single shade name of her products and the thief had no idea what the items were. All this beauty knowledge we have pays off when it comes down to it!

Ohhh not really as for now 🙂 😛 …

Eeeww who would want to use stolen makeup? Gently used is one thing, but the things in my bag are usually at half pot. This is why I don’t have my makeup bag have things like MAC or Chanel on them. Maybe I should make a makeup bag that says “TAMPONS” or “DOUCHEBAG” for theft deterrents.
Nothing stolen for me, thankfully. *extra knocks on wood* I have lost travel kits before. I’d be bummed because I was looking forward to FINALLY trying out samples of new things.

My friend who teaches high school had her fully stocked makeup bag stolen in the classroom. All of her MAC faves-gone. I felt so sorry for her! After that happened I made sure I didn’t bring anything with me that I didn’t want to “lose”. I do the same thing when travelling now-I try to take things I like, but if I lose them, it’s no big deal.

YES, I have totally had makeup stolen from me! My favorite lip gloss palette by agnes b. (which was discontinued) in particular as well as my Shu Uemura eyelash curler were in the bag (and it is such a hassle to replace anything Shu Uemura now). So sad.

Sure have, on the weekend 🙁 I live in Australia and had my car broken into over the weekend. I’m a makeup student so thank God I had taken my MAC filled kit out, but I had a bag of new stuff in there that I had bought from the US (it costs half the price in the US) that had about $2000.00 worth in there 😡 Thank God for insurance! I’m not sure that it was stolen because it was makeup, more likely they needed a bag to put all of the other stuff they pinched in!

Never, but this is why I ALWAYS carry on my makeup bag/brushes and leave them in locked suitcases in hotel rooms. May sound paranoid but man, I spent a lot of time and money acquiring those items! 🙂

I don’t think I ever had my bag stolen, but I remember when I was in the 3rd grade there was this horrid little girl named Vicki who picked my pocket and stole my Barbie eyeshadow compact and my Barbie lip gloss. When I caught her, she exclaimed “But you said I could look at it!” She was a real psycho. I managed to get the lip gloss back but she made off with the compact. Where does a 7 year old learn to steal and lie like that?
I also dealt with a makeup swap once where the other person received my item but never sent me what I was supposed to get.
Trisha says
Nope, never, although I usually only have a makeup bag with me when I’m traveling. And I don’t travel nearly as often as I’d like.
Perhaps I’ve just been lucky…

This post makes me so warm and chilly at the same time. Chilly because make up stealing is just plain nasty – I can’t imagine someone wanting to use half used makeup by some unknown stranger! Warm because I always thought I was being paranoid for locking my small makeup bag whenever I travel in the lockers provided/my luggage in hostels! Besides my purse/phone/earphones and passport I think my makeup/skincare are the stuff that cost the most! Glad to know that I’m not the only one who’s worried about lost makeup purse! While I don’t have any hard to find cosmetics in my purse, replacing them would be a real hassle!

I had ALL my brand new makeup stolen at my wedding, from the “brides” room at a private country club! Left for my honeymoon in Maui the next morning barefaced and i didn’t even have a tan yet!

OMG!!! That is horrible! What a terrible thing to happen on your wedding day! Thankfully I’ve never had any makeup or beauty items stolen, however I also don’t touch up during the day so I don’t carry any makeup. I have had one of my favourite sequin tank tops ‘stolen’ before, while in university a ‘friend’ borrowed it to go out in one night after about 2 weeks of not getting it back I brought it up and she denied everything. Said she gave me my tank back weeks ago and wouldn’t even bother looking around her apartment -_-

Never the whole bag, but once when I was in a high school play one of the other students stole my powder foundation. I saw her putting it on her face the next day! I would have been more upset, but it was the totally wrong color and she went around all orange because of it, so I just had to laugh.

Eeeek! Perish the thought!

I recently moved home from grad school and managed to forget a makeup bag that was full of my favorite nail polishes and 3 large mac eyeshadow palettes (from what I can remember was in there). Very depressing.

When I was still in college, my makeup kit did go missing. Never did figure out if it was stolen or maybe I just left it behind BUT I do know that either way, it was in homeroom and it could have been easily returned to me if the founder/thief was so inclined. It was such a hassle because here in Manila an oily-skinned gal has to retouch with powder or oil sheets every hour or so but it mostly contained drugstore items and I wasn’t as into makeup then as I am now so it wasn’t really such a haul.
However, now that I do stock up on MAC, Guerlain, etc. losing my makeup kit would hurt. This reminds me to only bring what I need for the day, nothing more. I tend to just stuff items in as I go until I realize that I already have like 20 lipsticks in my bag before I empty it all out. Imagine if disaster strikes on a 20+-lipsticks-in-the-bag day *shudders*

Thankfully this has never happened to me. I would be quite heartbroken if it ever does though!

I have lost individual items (usually lipsticks or mascaras) but I’ve never had my makeup bag stolen. I carry around a little makeup bag in my purse every day, but all it has are 2 travel sized blushes (1 was a free sample, 1 was in a Tarte kit that I bought at a steep discount), 1 powder compact, 1 mirror, some mini ecotools brushes, and 2-3 lipsticks. In addition, my purse has about 7 lipsticks scattered throughout but they are pretty much all drugstore, so not too expensive and easily replaceable. The most expensive makeup item in my purse is the finishing powder.

Yes people steal makeup, as gross as that is. Things also get lost in transit. This is why I don’t pack or carry around a lot of expensive beauty products. The nice stuff stays home. I had a $30 hair serum “confiscated” at the airport. I know someone took it home. Never again.
Lorraine says
I had a full, brand new, unopened tube of Laura Mercier body butter confiscated at the airport. and that is as good as stolen, in my book. I begged the guy to at least promise me he’d take it home to his wife.

Oh my gosh! Yes; and I am STILL upset about it. Four years ago I was out watching a local band with my friends at this place downtown, kind of in an unsafe part of town. Me and my two friends left our purses in the car which was supposed to be locked. A couple hours later, our purses were gone. The police found them a few weeks later, empty by some train tracks, no makeup bags, sunglasses, or anything. This was right after the MAC/Hello Kitty collection came out and I had my makeup in my bag because I was going to stay with my friend that night after the show. So…now I have none of my HK makeup. I doubt I will ever fully get over that.

I just lost my make-up bag on the train about a week ago. It took me 3 trips to the city lost & found before I even got a chance to ask somebody about it, and they said they didn’t have it. I don’t know if that’s true and it didn’t turn up after I reported it, or if they just couldn’t be bothered to look. This is very upsetting to me because I built up that collection piecemeal over several years, and because I’m poor and struggle paycheck to paycheck, I can’t afford to just go to sephora and replace everything. I also had a bottle of perfume in there, and the bag itself was a nice designer bag and fairly new.

I had my entire make up kit stolen from my car this week – £2000 worth!!!! All Laura Mercier, Mac, Clinique!!! I’m devastated! Im a make up artist so travel with my kit in the boot and forgot to bring it indoors in the evening, and some ahole took full advantage and nicked the lot!! Not even left with one brush…..the worst part is, I’m busy with weddings atm and have nothing to pit on their faces…gutted doesn’t quite cut it. I have no idea why someone would want used make up, all its done is made my life difficult and it’s useless to them!
Rosie says
Was it in a nice case? I just lost mine at a hotel. I’m thinking I probably forgot it beside my car or outside the room, since I don’t exactly remember taking it in to the room. It was all my makeup, since I move for work quite often and it was my first couple of days in that town. It was in a large silver makeup case, so I figure whoever took it thought it was some fancy electronic equipment. But no, just broken eyeshadows in awesome colors, and powders and foundations to match me year round ( I tan easily so I need options!)I had soo much stuff. In a way it was good, I would have never finished it by myself, but it still sucks to know that all I have left is a couple of pencils and mascara that I carry in my purse. It was also sitting with one of those re-usable Lululemon bags, and an old beat up yoga mat. I don’t want second hand makeup or mats, and maybe that thief now knows to leave girly looking stuff alone, because unless its a makeup loving person who doesn’t care how crusty that foundation pump is, how cruddy the brushes are, and is in need of a crappy mat, no one besides myself has any use for that stuff.

I fell asleep late last night and woke up to find that my whole makeup bag and one of my books that I was currently reading had gone. I wasn’t sure if I was still dreaming and just imagined that I had lost it but I wasn’t. I asked my mum if she had moved it but she said she hadn’t so now I am so confused and upset and I don’t know what to do. It’s gone and I have had to have a no-makeup day today.

Ik how u guys feel. I forgot my makeup bag in the gym locker room and as soon as I went back to get it, it was gone! I checked all of my classes and they said they haven’t seen it. I had $40 in cash and expensive make up in their to. What got me really made was that my mom gave me that bag b4 she passed away from cancer?? and now a special part of her is gone…
