What, you might be wondering, does this post have to do with Christmas OR Hawaii? Well, that’s an excellent question! I have no idea. 🙂 I came across this interview of actress Cate Blanchett on StyleList.com in which she says she went through “a big gothic phase” in her younger years.
“Back then,” she says, “I’d go to bed with my make-up on if I’d been out. And I went through a big gothic phase, so my pillow was always covered in black mascara and white pancake make-up.”
LOL! My brush with goth was back around 1994. I went through a phase in which I was outlining and filling in my lips with black eyeliner and then adding a dark matte red lipstick on top. No goth clothes or anything like that, though.
What about you? Have you ever had a goth phase, or are you in the midst of one now?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Also in the StyleList.com interview, Cate mentions liking SK-II Facial Treatment Essence. Hmm… Has some promising reviews on MakeupAlley. Have you ever given it a try? I’m curious.
Sarah says
I wouldn’t cal it a “goth” phase but I definitely dyed my hair VERY dark and put my make up on with a thick hand. And since I happen to be EXTREMELY pale, and prefer darker clothing, I probably looked goth.
I think everybody should go through it at an early age and get it out of their system!
Karen says
Hi Sarah,
I think dark makeup on pale skin can look really cool. I bet it was a very edgy look for you. 🙂
pinksoysauce says
I’ve never gone through a goth phase, but my nails are painted with Sephora by OPI’s 212, which is pretty black and goth-looking with two coats, although the flakes and glitter tone its seriousness down a bit. It’s probably the closest I’ll get to goth. 🙂
I think Cate is an SK-II spokesperson. My mom used SK-II a few years back though, and it did wonders for her skin and really revived it. She doesn’t use it anymore (for reasons I can’t remember), but she did love it, and I think the Essence was part of her skincare routine too.
Karen says
Hi Pinksoysauce,
I love dark polish but hate how it shows chips so easily!
pinksoysauce says
I know! It’s so annoying. I finally went and got Seche Vite top coat though, and it’s been helping a ton with chips.
CL says
haha definitely! back in middle school, i rocked that thick smudgy black liner all around my eyes with the dark hair that covered my one eye and pale skin. i look back and cringe haha

I was never goth but I used to wear black all the time and heavy eyeliner on the top. I used to listen to screaming and all that but now I can’t stand it! Lol

Nope, never had a goth phase. Though I wear dark nail polish all the time, and adore anything with black lace. Oh and crazy looking jewelry, big rings, anything antique..Well, maybe I just like a touch of goth in everyday look…
Solé says
I voted Other, because although I didn’t go through a defined goth phase, I’ve always had a goth streak, and I definitely went through a chola phase. Clearly not the same thing, although they share some similar makeup patterns, not to mention the cholas these days are going all rockabilly and blurring the lines (which I secretly think is super hot). I definitely have a dark streak and every once in a while I do goth it up just for fun. Does that make me a poser? I hope not. I just don’t like to define myself in any given category.
Jen says
In 1993 I dyed my hair jet black. SO SO FUN! Anyone who has never done the a tough edgy look has never lived. 🙂 Happy holidays! I’m so jealous you’re in Hawaii!

I kinda hate this whole “Goth Phase”. You either a goth or not. Goth it’s just not wearing dark clothes or wearing dark makeup. Sure lots of people go throught times when they prefer a look more than the other at a time and then change their look. But being a goth is more than that. I have friends who are goths and they do not wear the stereotypical dark clothes and makeup all the time, while there are others (like me) who all the time wear clothes and makeup inspired by goth art, music and literature. In either case, we are goths forever and not just because painted our nails black.
Sarah Cohen says
Actually, In seventh grade, girls at my school all decided that heavy makeup was a must. Haha, we all colored are eyelids black with eyeliner and wore hot pink lip stick. I am actually pretty plae so my makeup was a little goth. Thank god didnt wear any foundation. I was soo young, I must have looked ridiculous! I thinkmy preppy style and blonde hair toned it down, haha.
Deconstruction says
I had a slight goth phase in high school but I wouldn’t say it was anything too severe.
I also am a fan of SK-II’s foundation. I have not used the Essence, mainly because the cost seems excessive. It may one day be a splurge, but for now there are other things on which to splurge!

Heck yes I had a goth phase. 😀 In about 1994 also, when it was still called “goth” and not “emo” or whatever it is now.
Stacie says
Weeelll, I wouldn’t call it a goth phase. But when I was about 14, my best friend and I had a brush with black lipstick. (And we are both super pale, so you can probably imagine what that looked like!) I think we just did it to rebel and irritate our parents, more than anything else. It certainly wasn’t about style, at least not for me! (And the father of another friend said we looked like we had sucked on charcoal, and then that was the end of that!) 🙂
amy says
I never had a Goth phase myself, but I always thought the Goth look was very beautiful and provocative in it’s own way. I would love to try a Goth look for a day or two though with all the Style Black items I picked up in September. However, I am tanned year round, so it probably won’t look that Goth.

I love the Goth! I definitely have an inner Goth streak, but sadly I lack the courage to bring it out full-on! I usually select a given feature (nails, lips, eyes) and Goth it up from time to time. It inspires my clothing choices too, although (again) just a detail here and there! I really wish I had the nerve to completely rock the Goth look!
Aloha, pretty lady! Hope you have a fabulous holiday! 🙂

My time was the 80’s and I wasn’t goth, I was “New Romantic” My hair was short, spikey, purple and I had a fools tail and I loved early Duran Duran and Adam Ant! I did love to dress in all black and white too.

My dip into goth was dark brown lipstick lined with dark brown eye liner. Occasionally dark red or dark purple lipstick with matching dark liner. This was in the mid-90’s. Now I will break out with black or nearly black nails every so often. I don’t really consider that really goth though. Then of course there was MAC Style Black with black lipstick. I’ve layered Black Knight over other lipsticks for some interesting depth.

PS SK-II products are amazing! I wish I could afford to use them always, but the prices are a bit steep. (As well, they’re hard to find around my area.) I’ve used their cleansing oil, facial treatment essence and the clear lotion. For the short time I used it, I really loved it.

I’ve used SKII’s eye cream before. I really disliked it. It was VERY expensive and if you accidentally got any of it into your eye, it stung so bad that you’ll start crying and that stains your pillow brown. Also I read somewhere that their Pitera is actually a kind of yeast, and it gives such clear skin because it thins out the skin, which can only stand SKII products thereafter because regular products will become too “irritating” for it.
Shiny says
Cate always promotes the SK II stuff in interviews – because she is their spokes model. I’m not saying it’s not good…. just keep it in mind that she is paid to say it is.
That being said – I love love love her look in the above photo!

Aloha Karen!
Yes girl – BIG TIME GOTH MOMENT in high school!
What can I say, I LOVE The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode and all the great new wave bands of the 80’s!
Courtney says
I’d call it more of a goth/punk phase. Lots of dark eyeliner. Man I was a MESS. This was atleast 5-6 years ago. Really weird phase in 8th grade.. lols. I don’t even like wearing dark clothes anymore.. had enough of it for one year. xD
sparklehead says
Oh, the 90’s… how I’m scared of your eventual come-back… Yup I sure did! It was maybe Goth-lite: black eyeliner and a general bad attitude for 1995-1996.
sparklehead says
p.s. what a stunning picture of Cate. Love the orange.

I’m a little young to have had a goth phase (I’m 23), but I definitely had a rocker phase. Hell, with all the studs in style right now, I’m back in it!
All Women Stalker says
I so wanted a goth phase. But I was reasonable enough to know that black makeup would not look good with my skin color. I have the typical brown Pinay skin. You are probably the mestiza Pinay. 🙂

I never went through a goth phase per sa, but I do like a lot of the goth look elements, just not necessarily all at once! On weekends I wear really dark or black nail polish, I love dark eyeliner smudged around my eyes and I think I’m in the minority in that I actually like the way black lipstick looks. It’s too high maintenance to wear often though. I also like wearing dark clothes and have to make a conscious effort not to wear all black (although sometimes I slip!). My husband calls me a “closet goth”, but I’m not sure I agree with that either – I just like the look, not the attitude that goes with it.
Sarah says
Karen,
It would be awesome if you posted a picture of your goth days! I never went goth, but I wanted to so badly. The wrath of my mom prevented me from gothing out, so I just got tattoo’s I could hide instead. lol

I was too nerdy to be Goth, but I wore black nail polish, dyed my hair dark red and black, wore spikes and trench coats (not all the time, though). I never did much in regards to makeup but with MAC’s Style Black collection, I’ve fallen in love with it! Greasepaint stick? Yes please! Matte dark violet lipstick? Very yes! It’s so fun! Honestly, I find the dark lipstick look better than a red lip. It’s so different!
J says
I used to wear a helluva lot of black shadow and eyeliner in high school, though I think I only ever wore black lipstick once.
Kat says
It wasn’t just a phase!!!
I’m with Katherine on this one. Seriously, it’s a lot more than eyeliner folks. The question is (more than) a little naive; most people who go through a ‘phase’ are just into the look. People who really understand what a ‘gothic’ lifestyle is know that you can be a goth if you’re wearing black or pink on a given day; it’s more about who you are and what your values and inspirations are.
kathryn says
i guess you could say im going through a “goth” phase. i wouldnt really call it goth, more like indie/retro. i dyed my hair really dark a while ago and i constantly have it all shaggy and run my fingers through it all the time, and im getting into wearing dark black makeup and i constantly have black nailpolish on. its always been my favourite colour to wear though. i guess you could say its goth, but i also wear alot of colorful clothes, and just different stuff matched together, like a stripped baggy shirt with a vest, a plaid shirt with a scarf, all worn with jeans. i never wear anything but sweat pants, pj bottoms or jeans. and im really addicted to sunglasses. ray bans, aviators, nerd glasses. the works, i like alot of retro stuff from the 80s and stuff. btw im a 90s kid, born in 94. so yeah, i also wouldnt say its a phase really, ppl just have their own style and prefer wearing stuff like that. like me for instance, im sure i wont always have this sense of style but some ppl will.
