So…what is the Monday Poll?
Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past 10 (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine. ?
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
Two things.
Actually, three things. I always have an extra bottle of Kate Spade… Kate Spade, LOL! I meant Kate Somerville Anti Bac Clearing Lotion to keep the pimples away.
I also keep an extra bottle (or two) of Rita Hazan Root Concealer Touch-Up Spray in Dark Brown/Black around because my roots are all about showing up at the most inopportune times.
Third thing is body lotion. I can’t fathom living in a house where one runs out of body lotion.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
Toilet paper. I like having obnoxious amounts of toilet paper at home, and I get freaked out by the thought of not having enough toilet paper around… Does anybody ever get one of those little packs with the four rolls and be OK with it? Not me.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
I could see myself living in Southern California, like in San Diego. Ooh! I love San Diego…
And Hawaii, of course.
But both sets of Connor’s grandparents live here in Northern California, so I think we’ll be staying here, but if Connor decides to go to college someday in Hawaii or San Diego or someplace else, maybe El Hub and I will pack up and move there!
4. I think it’s important to…
Get enough sleep! — otherwise, it’s Grumpy Goatville the next day. (I may or may not be referring to myself.)
I also think that it’s important to take the time to think before speaking, because some things can’t be taken back.
And it’s important to moisturize those hands, girl.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
Oh, like…never. I never do it, not even in the summertime, because my hair isn’t the type that air dries nicely. I end up looking like a rabid poodle.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
First, it’s saying HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MBB! 🙂 Because today is Makeup and Beauty Blog’s 10th birthday. I started the blog on February 20th, 2007.
Second, it’s telling me to “bring it” when I go to HIIT class tonight, because there are lots of, like, hardcore athletes in the night class who don’t mess around.
Happy birthday, MBB!!!!
Today is the day. I started MBB exactly 10 years ago today.
Wow. I can’t even… I’m speechless. That is SUCH a long time for something like a blog. For anything, really.
Sometimes I can’t even remember being an adult before MBB, LOL!
Thank you for making this one of the most fulfilling, fascinating, fun things I’ve ever been involved with.
I’m feeling so many emotions right now…but I don’t want to bore you or get too cheesy. Suffice to say, thank you for spending part of your life with me.
Here’s to more memories, more makeup and more good times, my friend. Happy Monday to you. Have a wonderful day. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Here are the poll questions to copy/paste:
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
4. I think it’s important to…
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
Kiss & Make-up says
Teeeeeeeeen years, a bit fat congratulations on that, Karen, what a milestone! You’re one of my favorite bloggers and I pretty much come here every single day. You’re the best!
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out? Eye pencil. Mattifying powder. Lip balm. Hand cream. And skincare in general.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk? Depends less on the product, more on whether there’s a discount to be had 😀
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in? Japan. Hawaii. The US. Loved my time in all those countries, and since we actually lived for a while in Japan I have a (better) idea of what living there is like opposed to just going on holiday there.
4. I think it’s important to take care of your body.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair? It has happened maybe a handful of times, so not often.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today? Oh you really don’t want to know… My head is a mess right now, stressy chaotic days!
Joyce Berzenski says
Congratulations Karen! And happy birthday to MBB. I don’t know what I’d buy (or look like!) without it.
Karen says
Aww, thank you Joyce! ❤️❤️❤️
Yelena Rivera says
First of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MBB! I’m not sure if I discovered MBB in 2007 or 2008, but it has been my favorite part of my day ever since!
checking in with MBB every morning with my cup of coffee was my way to de-stress and start my day. it just puts me in a great mood to see beautiful make up, swatches, read your lovely writing and anecdotes, get to know Tabs and now Connor Claire!
So thank YOU Karen, for letting us in not only to your world of makeup, but to your personal life too!
Second of all, you look gorgeous in these pics! and how fun is the GIF of you blowing out the candles! 🙂
Finally, on to the beauty poll:
1. eyeliner, lip balm and hand/body lotion. It would be impossible to pick just one. I feel absolutely naked without these on the daily. I cannot understand people who purchase one eyeliner and use it down to the nub?? that has never happened ever in my life and it is actually terrifying to be quite honest lol.
and spending a day with dry lips and dry skin is my worst nightmare! so i keep extras EVERYWHERE! i mean everywhere – at my desk, in my purse, in my car, in my night stand, in my bathroom, even in my living room! yes in my living room because let’s be honest, if you are in the middle of watching a great show, you don’t want to pause to walk and get up to find some lip balm or body lotion. lol. so i just keep these handy – EVERYWHERE lol.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
see #1 lol. I order a special lip balm from amazon because they don’t sell my lip balm in store. i found it one year when nothing, and i mean nothing could improve my chapped lips! it was terrible they were chapped and cracked and even painful…until i found CORTIBALM! it is hands down the best lip balm in the world. no in this galaxy! seriously, it’s a life saver and i have been buying it in bulk for the past 2 years! so ladies if you have stubborn chapped lips, or allergic reactions to lip products that you can’t seem to figure out what to use to soothe them, try some cortibalm 😉 looks just like chap stick, easy to carry around, and is oh so soothing, your lips will thank you.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
hmmm… this is a tough one. i have always wanted to give NYC a shot, even if it is temporary but it’s always been a dream of mine. As for a permanent move, I can’t say I know the answer to that.
4. I think it’s important to…
Treat everyone with respect and courtesy. We live in a world where everything is so fast paced and I cannot believe how rude people can be in public spaces. Hold the elevator for people, say good morning, or at least nod and acknowledge their presence, hold the door, little things can go far in making someone’s day. it shocks me how blatantly rude people can be when they get caught up in the hustle and bustle of every day. (sometimes I want to make a flyer with elevator etiquette and post it in all the elevators in the building). sheesh!
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
no very often, but not because of styling issues, I am just scared to get sick lol. maybe its an old wives tale, maybe I am scared my mom would kill me herself if she found out, but I grew up being told never to leave the house with your hair wet. otherwise, when I am really running late, I can scrunch some curly hair cream (current favorite is Moroccan oil curl cream) and run out the door. my hair volume in creases with time as most curly hair girls know, but that’s ok I have grown more used to my natural texture and come to like it 😉
For work tho, I will make it a special point to dry and style it, especially for special meetings.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
Hmm… PBS Masterpiece “Victoria”. I have grown to love this show and often re watch episodes immediately after it airs on Sunday nights. Last night I was not able to rewatch and I can’t wait to go home and rewatch the episode. lol.
(If anyone is interested in watching this, there will be a marathon on Sunday Feb 26 of all the episodes this season 😀 )
Syah says
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
Anything skincare related. I run out and get backups the moment I feel the weight changes in my hands!
Oh and body oil 🙂
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
Um…tissue boxes and lightbulbs.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
Singapore I guess – cuz that’s where family is. But only if Mr. Man and I are able to still live the life we have right now in Vancouver. Both places are super expensive to live in (cities, bah!). I would like to live in a farm or somewhere quiet where I can have pet chickens, goats, cats, a bearded dragon and a micropig.
4. I think it’s important to…
Drink plenty of water, get rest and fresh air. Also, eat green food.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
Karen, I totally get you on the rabid poodle thing. My hair totally airdries that way. But I kind of like it. I sometimes leave with damp-ish hair (my roots are always damp because my hair is so thick) but never wet hair.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
To accept the ugly parts of myself and that doing so will give me strength.
Agata says
I’m about and about so won’t answer all the poll questions but Happy 10th Birthday! It is a very long time but you’re the reason I started blogging myself. And I can’t thank you enough for being a great friend and helping me through some toughest times!
Karen says
Thanks, Agata! It’s been so great so getting to know you. To quote the Golden Girls, “Thank you for being a friend”.
Tatiana says
Happy Birthday to MBB!
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out? Eye serum/cream. I have so many of those.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk? Girl, I’m with on the TP! I once stayed with friends who ran out while I was there. (They had major budgeting issues. Let’s just say it was the wife who introduced me to Nordstrom when I moved out this way.) I ran out and bought them a ton of TP.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in? Not that Dear Husband would live in any of these places but New York, London, Paris, Tokyo. I’m a sucker for a good subway/transportation system in an interesting city. I like LA in theory, but I’d miss the Warriors and the hot weather and driving would be the death of me.
4. I think it’s important to… Be kind to your spouse/SO/partner.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair? What is that? Why would I want to leave the house with wet hair? Never!
6. What is your inner voice talking about today? Oh boy! I get to spend the day with Dear Daughter at SF MoMA and in the city. Better get moving!
Syah says
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
Anything skincare related. And body oil.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
Tissue boxes and lightbulbs.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
In a farm, somewhere quiet, where I can keep lots of animals.
4. I think it’s important to…
be kind to others, even when they’re being really, really aggravating. Taking in a breath and stopping to think before you say anything helps.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
Never wet but damp-ish…the insides of my hair takes a very long time to dry because my hair is so thick.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
To accept the ugly parts of myself and that doing so will give me strength.
Happy 10th birthday MBB! <3 love!!
Karen says
Thank you, Syah! ❤️

Happy birthday!
I started reading in 2007, so I can not fathom that it’s been almost ten years!! Time flies. Soon enough Connor will be heading to college. I wonder if you will still have the blog then?
Happy 10th, my dear. Good job!
Karen says
Thank you for reading for all this time! I’m hoping to still be blogging when I send Connor off to the dorms for freshman year. You’ll get an entire post on waterproof mascara and liner because I’ll be crying buckets. LOL!

Thanks, Genesis! ❤️
Colleen says
Congratulations on 10 years! You’re my favorite blogger by far. Thank you to you and Tabs for all of your hard work.
Karen says
Thank you, Colleen! I wouldn’t been able to do it without Tabs! He’s the best kitty boss ever.
Have a wonderful Monday.
Robin W says
Congratulations on 10 years! That is an awesome accomplishment!
I LOLed at #2. Ever since the birth of my second child, I have had an obsession with keeping large amounts of toilet paper on hand at all times. I now have it on auto-deliver through Amazon. The UPS guy must think we have very active excretory systems!
Karen says
It’s funny, right? I get nervous with the thought of less than four rolls. It’s the weirdest thing!
How old are your kids? I have two — my oldest is my cat. LOL! He’s about 9. My daughter is going to be 1 year old in a couple weeks.
Robin says
Oh Lord, my youngest son will soon be 14 so my husband and kids have been putting up with the TP hoarding thing for some time now! They know better than to question it;
Efrain says
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
Due to budget options I don’t have many backups, right now only Avène Triacneal which actually has lost part of its effectiveness on my skin.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
Everything that doesn’t get rotten or spoilt, we are toilet papers hoarders too.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
Even though drug cartels are messing things up I miss Veracruz, and in other conditions I’d easily go to live there. Also I think I’d love to live in a more cosmopolitan city like Mexico City or New York; San Francisco is also in my bucket list.
4. I think it’s important to…
Take care of yourself, recently since my psoas pain returned I realized how important is to stay healthy but also to feel good with your self. Also think before saying something and don’t use too much energy in something you don’t love.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
Many times, but mine dries in a pretty way so I’m ok with it.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
I’m sleepy and with pain after my physiotherapy, also I’m bare faced but still I’ll slay.
OMG ten years, I’m so proud and happy for you. You created a happy place/family for all the beauty lovers and cat ladies “¡Larga vida a Makeup and Beauty Blog!” Which coulee be translated to I wish it stays here for a lot of time. I hope you enjoy this day even if you only go out for that HIIT class.
Ankita says
Happy 10th anniversary Karen! Your blog was one of the first I started reading, back in 2010. You keep it real and fun, which is why I always keep coming back! I’ve found inspiration here for my own blog several times over the years, I completed 6 years last month. Here’s to many more!

4. I think it’s important to… pamper yourself.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?: Not too often, but I mostly do it in the summer.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?: Prioritizing my mental health, finding a new job, focusing on myself.
MBB is basically a 5th grader now. Lol.
Alexis says
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out? MAC pencils: Coffee eyeliner and Whirl lip pencil. As a matter of fact, my Whirl pencil is getting dangerously short! And yes to lotion – I run an ashy free household!
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk? Coffee creamer. Along with lotion, I need coffee w/cream at all times.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in? The East Coast. I have had fantasies of living in NYC since the first time I watched Desperately Seeking Susan when I was 10 years old. I know it’s changed rapidly since then but I still have that fantasy. Luckily I married a man from NJ with family ties there. We talk about making that move all the time since we can’t afford to buy a home here in the Bay, which is sad because this is my home.
4. I think it’s important to…NEVER stop dreaming and have no regrets! Also, moisturize.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair? Never, personal reasons.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today? You will have a better week than the last one.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!! You got me through the rocky year of my first daughter’s birth – Gabi, 8. Between your blog and What Not to Wear episodes, I found my pretty when I felt frumpy! I also discovered my love for NARS and my obsession over MAC flourished at that time. The most important factor that made me a fan: you’re Pinay and through out Filipino food references and oh yeah, your brother is pretty cool, too!
Carla says
Happy 10th birthday MBB! *\o/*
Erin says
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
Lip Balms and my skincare favorites!
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
TP, Paper towels, pet supplies, cleaning supplies, and wine!
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Austria, Switzerland. Anywhere in the UK, Australia, or NZ. Canada… I’d keen to try many other places but those are the places I can get by on current language skills.
4. I think it’s important to…
Treat others as you wish to be treated.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
All the time. I never use a blow dryer.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
How tired, angry, and worn down I am. Most of it’s related to the military. It’s been a very un-fun weekend.
Happy Birthday! I’ve been a reader almost as long! I started reading in 2008 but lurked until about 2010 😛
Stephanie Smith says
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out? Urban Decay One and Done Bb cream, and Nest Citrine perfume.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk? Toilet paper for sure! And toothpaste and deodorant. Always.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in? I live in Central CA, but we’ve been thinking about relocating to Central Michigan in a few years. Cost of living, four seasons, no drought, it’s very appealing.
4. I think it’s important to…get enough sleep, have girlfriends that are like family, use cuticle oil, get some alone time, and have pets.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair? Never. It looks weird. I have fine, curly hair. If I don’t fine tune my bangs, I look like a poodle that stuck a fork in an electrical socket.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today? It’s a three day weekend, so the kids are home. I’m finally better after catching the cold that has been going around, so I need to prepare the house/kids/hubs for the week. Grocery shop, laundry, all that.

Congrats on the Big 10 Karen!!!
Normally, I don’t leave comments but today is so special I had to;) Love your blog…read it all the time! I’m also an NC42ish skintone so your opinion, swatches and reviews are very useful before I make a purchase. Here’s my Monday poll:
1. Beauty products I always have on hand: Face moisturizer w sunscreen and my Derma e Eye Cream. I haven’t found a HG facial moisturizer so I’m always trying new things but I always keep at least one in backup in case I run out.
2. Things I buy in bulk: Bath & Body Works Body Cream and Foaming Hand Soap. I have at least a dozen body creams and about 40 hand soaps rt now…lol!
3. I could definitely see myself living in Maui! Or, possibly Chicago…since that would put me closer to my mom.
4. I think it’s important to…Love yourself. Make time for you, forgive yourself and be proud of the little things.
5. Lately I’ve been leaving the house with wet hair on the daily. It ends up looking almost the same as when I fiddle with it for 15 minutes so I figure why bother.
6. Today my inner voice is telling me to make the most of my last day visiting my mom as I prob won’t see her for several months:(
Thank you Karen!! Keep it up. Cheers to 10 more!

1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?

2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
Everything! Apparently makeup and skincare (see above haha) and every household item imaginable. Paper towels, toilet paper, hand soap, cleaning products, you name it. My basement is basically a target.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
San Francisco or Maine. I live in Connecticut. We travel to Maine a few times a year and I would live there in a heartbeat. We visited San Francisco about 5 years ago and loved it so much.
4. I think it’s important to…
Make time for yourself. Even if it’s 10 minutes a day.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
Never.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
It’s telling me to relax lol which is why I just sat down to have a cup of tea and do this poll:)
Happy Birthday! ?You know this is the very first blog I ever read?! I think I have told you that before. And you know what….it’s the only blog I have continued to follow for so long. I can’t remember how I stumbled across it but I am so glad I did. I can’t believe that was 10 years ago! I honestly feel like you are a friend. I love this blog because yes I love all things beauty, but it’s because of who you are, that I have been here for so long. You are such a wonderful person. You have stayed true to who you are and that’s what makes this blog my favorite. While I don’t always comment, I love coming on here every day. I have also loved your baby related posts this last year as I was pregnant at the same time, so it was extra fun to read! (I had my baby girl 2 months after Connor was born)
I could go on and on but just wanted to wish MBB a very happy birthday and I hope you continue to do this for another 10 years (or more!).
Love,
Sara ❤

Happy Anniversary Karen! I’m so glad I got to ‘meet’ you through your blog ?
Suzanne C says
Awww, congratulations, Karen!!
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
FAB cleanser- it’s the only thing gentle enough for my skin that still gets it clean. And Aveeno lotion, because I wash my hands a lot and scented/dyed lotions make my hands peel.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
Definitely TP and paper towels. (This is why Sam’s and I are besties.) Pens, printer paper, and notebooks, too.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
Savannah, Birmingham, maybe one of the smaller suburbs of Atlanta.
4. I think it’s important to…
be balanced. I’ve heard so much lately about finding your passion and why stick with a job you hate? I dig that, but if your passion doesn’t feed the kids and pay the electric bill, you do what you’ve gotta do.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
Vaguely dampish sometimes, but never wet unless I’m going straight to the hairdresser.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
I’m waiting on some test results, which will probably show I have something fairly easy to treat. But, having watched 3 grandparents go through chemo and die, my inner voice is saying “You probably have cancer.”
Chelsea says
Congratulations! I’m so glad I started reading and got to know you 😀 I’m hoping to make it to Marin County in the near future to visit another friend, I’ll have to let you know.
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
Cotton pads for toner / makeup remover / etc. and sheet masks.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
Do sheet masks count? LOL
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
I haven’t traveled enough to say! France though.
4. I think it’s important to…
Challenge your initial gut reactions to things.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
Not often at all, but I did on Saturday when it was in the 60s fahrenheit.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
Circus circus circus! I have the day off of work for President’s Day, and I get to go to open gym, followed by burlesque class.
Astrid says
Happy 10th!!! Cheers to many many more great years of the blog <3
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
Everything? ?? I have multiple stuff (not the same kind, admittedly) lying around in my bag. If I've to answer one thing, though, hand cream.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
We don't have a car, so buying in bulk requires lots of arm strength.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
Paris (beauty Mecca!), London (English speaking European scene), and Singapore (closer to family).
4. I think it’s important to…
Keep a goal and purpose in my life and work towards it.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
Every time, if possible. I usually just don't really have time to dry them.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
I can totally do this!
Trude says
Happy 10th, lovely!! I can’t believe it! I think I’ve been reading since 2009? So crazy how much content you’ve produced. You’re a machine, girl! 🙂 (And you look so gorgeous in that cute GIF!)
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
Batiste dry shampoo, Brow Wiz, and Clinique’s cleansing balm. Essential!
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
I’m like you – TP, tissues, paper towels.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
Occasionally I miss SoCal, but really only because of being near my loved ones. I would love to try Denver or Portland.
4. I think it’s important to…
Push for self discipline. It’s something I’m constantly working on, but when I really follow through and get done what I need/should do, I feel and sleep so much better.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
Almost never. But here in the dry Nevada high desert your hair drys really damn fast anyway!
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
Feeling sexier. The past couple months have had some tough times that had me feeling less than lovely, but I’ve been on top of my workouts for a couple weeks now, and then binge watched some Drag Race over the weekend and I’m ready to get back into that thang! 😉

1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
MAC Mineralize Charged Water Gel Cream!
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
Umm, toilet paper? I don’t like having to use a different brand.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
I’m currently planning on a move from Bloomington Indiana to the coast of Virginia within the next year or so. So there.
4. I think it’s important to…
Relax and not be overwhelmed.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
Maybe once a year in the summer to the dog park. At the most. Nobody at the dog park cares.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
neverless, she persisted
breyerchic04 says
And Karen I meant to congratulate you on your ten year blogiversery! I’ve been reading since 2010 and always come back!
I believe I found it because I was searching for MAC swatches.

1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out? Body butter, shower gel, under eye cream, and lip gloss (I must have dozens upon dozens).
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk? Toilet paper,
kleenez, and coffee.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in? CALIFORNIA (I love Newport Beach so much!!). Now I try to go every summer for our vacation.
4. I think it’s important to…Be kind to everyone; especially animals and children.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair? Every day.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today? Should I cancel my hair apt. to go exercise. Not sure what to do.
Amy says
Congrats on the big ten mark, Karen!!! You have such a relaxing site. ?
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
Moisturizer and SPF.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
Soup, oatmeal packets (the whole fam eats oatmeal almost daily), juice oranges, Kleenex. And… totally get your TP thing. I have an Amazon dash button for it!!
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
Boston, UK, Sweden, Ghana. Almost anywhere, really, if there were a good reason for it.
4. I think it’s important to…
Work to not react but instead be thoughtful and kind.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
Lots! Damp, anyway. Hardly ever blow dry.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
4 AM: Let’s do this! So many possibilities!
9 AM: On to the next scheduled activities!
Noon: Must eat but must also complete this task!
4 PM: Must nap!
Now: Time to regroup. What’s next?
Lulle says
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
I don’t really buy backups for fear of running out, but more to have different options. So I have a ton and half of shower gels and body lotions… Like maybe 12 shower gels open at a time plus 5 in a cabinet waiting for their turn!
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
Legumes and nuts. There’s something weirdly satisfying about filling a bag with red lentils and split peas at the store, and then storing them in XXL mason jars at home…
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
Hawaii definitely! Paris, maybe Seattle, although the gloomy weather might be a problem!
4. I think it’s important to…
Take it easy. I used to get so worried, upset, angry about a lot of things, and I finally realized it’s not healthy. You can’t take everything so seriously, because the truth is that a lot of stuff doesn’t actually matter in the grand scheme of things. So take a deep breath and have fun.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
About once a week!
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
Nap – nap – nap – nap
That’s all I can hear… Unfortunately I don’t have President’s Day off so that will have to wait!
Wow 10 years, I can’t believe it! It’s such an achievement, I don’t think I know any other blog that’s been active for so long. Did you ever take breaks? I’ve actually been blogging for 5 years (first in French) and I had to take some long breaks at times. Anyways, congrats on the longevity of MBB, and here’s to 10 more years *cheers with mug of Earl Grey tea*!

Happy 10th birthday MBB!! I was here from almost the beginning and it’s been amazing watching you develop over the years, and to share in your birth of Connor! I’m glad you’re still here and still keeping true to your blogging roots 🙂

1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out? Lotion, lip balm, foundation, setting powder, mascara.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk? Toilet paper, paper towels, soap, cotton swabs, batteries, rabbit kibble.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in? Seattle area. Hubby and I dream of living in Australia, but that’s less likely to happen.
4. I think it’s important to… Treat others how you’d like to be treated.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair? Pretty often. I rarely use a blow dryer. I don’t wash every day, though.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today? Now that I’m home from a fun weekend, it’s saying I have lots of work to do.

WOW!!!! Happy Birthday, MBB!! And WOW again to being around for 10 years — cheers to many, many more! But triple WOWZA! What a milestone!

Happy birthday, MBB! I started following this blog in 2010 and I can’t imagine a day without reading it. Thank you, Karen!
Holly says
such happy pictures to celebrate your blog’s birthday! I’m so very glad I ran across it a couple years ago & I try to check in daily. Looking forward to many more years!
And now for my answers to the questions:
1. I really had to think about if I had any duplicate beauty products or hoarded items; I don’t, unless you count Q tips & hair elastics. I go through those suckers like crazy!
2. Books. I like to buy books in bulk. Having a Kindle helps with that but seriously: books.
3. My ideal living situation is an island all my own. I could also see myself living in Arizona only because I have so many family members in the Phoenix area & I absolutely could live in Spain.
4. I think it’s important to be as kind as possible, to drink lots of water, to listen to others, to think before responding, to read as much as possible, to wash your face every night, & to spend time in nature.
5. I leave the house daily with wet hair! I’m about as low maintenance as possible when it comes to my hair: wash it daily, towel dry it, bit of volumizing mousse & a dab of style cream & I’m on my way.
6. My inner voice had a pretty good day in comparison to some recent days. I’m extraordinarily hard on myself but today I was kinder & I mainly thought about how on those rougher days, several strangers said or did things that were very kind & I thought about how much I appreciated that.
Shannon says
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MBB!!!!! I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I am so, so grateful for this wonderful piece of Internet you have created!!! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and talent with us, Karen. Cheers to many more years of blog love!
And the biznus:
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
Hmm.. St Ives intensive healing body lotion. I love love love that stuff. And Dove body wash, in basically any scent. I’m currently in NZ on vacay without either of those products, and it is SO SAD.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
Not much these days, since we live in a studio apartment. But I still like to have TP in whatever amount our sink can hold (usually like, a 12-pack). Back when we shopped at Costco, I loved stocking up on rice, pinto beans, and beer. Y’know, the essentials! Lol.
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
Seattle, for sure. Perhaps LA, though my hubs isn’t a fan of Cali. And possibly Montana… but Seattle would be my first choice, I think, if I were to move from NYC.
4. I think it’s important to…
I’m with you on the sleep, Karen! That, and eating your greens. That shiznit is important.
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
Fairly often, when it’s warm. During the winter I always dry my hair before I leave the house.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
Patience, and aging, and how I probably need to wear more sunblock.
Kuz says
Congrats, Karen! 😀 Sending you BIG hugs from Canada! I’ve been reading MBB for almost a decade now and am so glad that you’ve been creating such fabulous beauty content and sharing it with the world for 10 years – that’s incredible! xoxo

Happy Blogaversary, Karen! Here’s to many more years of makeup and fun together. Cheers!
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out?
I second the body lotion! Also, my holy trail moisturizer/sunscreen/primer, Paula’s Choice Youth Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50. Oh, and concealer.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk?
Butter, wine, toilet paper
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in?
The Pacific Northwest or somewhere else in Asia. I really want spend some time in Japan.
4. I think it’s important to…
Drink water, wear sunscreen, get enough sleep, travel, try new things, do things in spite of fear
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair?
Never, it’s too humid in Taiwan for it to dry quickly.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today?
“Great job on teaching yourself to edit video today. It’s hard, but you have to keep at.” (I’m an American expat in Taipei and I want to vlog about it).
“Also, girl, you need to drink more water. Put down that iced tea!”

Happy 10th, my friend! I’m crossing my fingers for many, many more years to come! 🙂
1. Beauty products for which you always have backups/extras around in case you run out? UD Whiskey, for sure. Body wash and lotion, too.
2. What are some things you like to buy in bulk? I’m with you on the TP. We also buy paper towels in bulk. To be honest, I sort of always have multiples of all packaged food items (I’m a sale kinda gal).
3. What are some places, other than where you live now, that you could see yourself living in? I can see myself vacationing in a ton of places but not living. All my favorite people live in my hometown and I’d never want to leave them. 🙂
4. I think it’s important to… Sleep, for sure. Eat well and exercise. Practice moderation (work in progress). Have patience (which I don’t) and cultivate a good poker face (which I also don’t have).
5. How often do you leave the house with wet hair? Pretty much every day. Not the roots/bangs, but the bottom half.
6. What is your inner voice talking about today? Being back at work after 4 days off. Prioritizing all the things to do AFTER work. 🙂
Holly says
I’m a day late in congratulating you because I typed up a lovely comment and then my computer weirded out and it didn’t get posted. Anyhow. Happiest of birthdays to you and the blog and here’s to many more!! I discovered you a couple years ago and you’re still the first page I visit when I’m researching a new (to me) product. Thank you for all the work you do and for the joy that suffuses your writings.
And onto the poll:
1. Skincare products are my bae. I hate to run out of my facial exfoliator, my a.m. and p.m. moisturizers, and lotion for my legs as this winter has been cruel to my skin.
2. I like to buy books in bulk. There are often sales at the local thrift stores, 10 books/$1. I love my Kindle but I still love having paperbacks available to read.
3. My ideal living situation is a personal island off the coast of Washington. I’d also be happy living in Spain and I could do Arizona as the majority of my extended family live in the Phoenix area.
4. I think it’s important to be as kind as possible, to listen to others, to drink lots of water, to read a lot, to spend time in nature, to moisturize, and to be creative.
5. I always leave the house with very damp hair. I wash it daily, towel dry it, use a bit of volumizing mousse and a dab of styling cream, and that’s that. My hair fine, thick and oily, uncolored for the past six years and I simply prefer to spend my time on makeup rather than hair.
6. My inner voice is telling me that I should get up and go do something but my other inner voice is saying to relax as today is my only day off this week and it’s okay to laze around. I’m gonna listen to the second one!
Have a wonderful rest of the week, Karen, and I hope you’re staying warm and dry.
