They do, but rarely with my childhood friends. I have two buddies from high school, Jen and Cindy, whom I still see a few times a year, but neither of them are really hardcore makeup fiends/fanatics like you and I are.
Jen’s more interested in it than Cindy is, though, and she’ll occasionally go through phases where she’s more into it than usual. Like last year I went makeup shopping with her and helped her pick out a few eyeshadows, lipsticks and brushes to freshen up her makeup bag. She’d been using the same few products for the past 10 years.
Sometimes Jen will call or text me from a counter with a question about a product.
Cindy’s even lower maintenance than Jen, and I think over the 20+ years I’ve known her, I can only recall half a dozen conversations about hair, skincare or makeup. Once, after a really bad spiral perm when we were freshmen in high school, she let me try to do/fix her hair. Last year, I think she asked me a skincare question, and then asked for a conditioner recommendation.
Funny thing is…because she’s like my sister, she never actually listens to anything I say, haha! She ends up doing her own thing anyway.
My more recent friends on and off the blog are definitely more open about asking beauty questions. I’ve even been like a personal makeup shopper for a couple of gal pals who live nearby, which was actually a LOT of fun! I wonder sometimes about doing it as a job in this area, like a stylist, but for makeup instead of clothes.
Let’s talk makeup shop. Do your friends/buddies/coworkers ever ask you for beauty advice?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S.
What’s up, Wednesday? Okay, this totally made my morning, and so of course I had to share it con tu. MBB reader Georgina (haaay girl, HAAAY!), sent me this link yesterday to a site called The Kitten Covers with famous album covers Photoshopped with kittens…
HILARIOUS! I love the one of Hole’s Live Through This because 1) it’s one of my favorite albums from my college years, and 2) who knew that kittens could rock smeared liner so well?
Big surprise, but Tabs is now totally jelly of these baby cats. Le sigh…

Happy Wednesday, Karen! I’m finally back. I was on vacay last week which just meant I did a lot more work around the house than I ever do at work! HAHA! Anyway, I’ll have a lot of catching up to do tomorrow (on your posts).
When my friends ask for recs, they most often ask “what does Karen think about this?” since they know all my expert opinions come from reading your blog. 🙂

I don’t get asked about makeup questions too much. I probably talk fashion more than makeup. Usually it’s with shorter gals and we discuss where to get petite sizes.
The Kitten Covers is great! Live Through This was also the soundtrack to my college years. Love that album.

You’re like the queen of make-up and beauty, Karen, or even better, the oracle of make-up and beauty! No wonder people ask you for advice 🙂 My mom often asks me for advice, and people often ask me about my make-up on parties, and if I’d teach them how to do it.
Trisha says
You should totally be a makeup stylist. That’d be such a cool job.
I’ve had people ask me questions. Usually they’re things like, “Can XYZ really [insert miracle claims here]?” And my answer is usually No.

My friends and family always do! Whenever they need a new product or want to know if something works or not I’m the go-to girl. I always help find gifts for girlfriends or mothers or sisters or whoever else. My friends and family know I read all the beauty blogs (plus my own) and know what the latest and greatest items are haha.
Nikita says
It’s exactly the same way for me! If anyone has a question regarding makeup/skincare products (especially nail looks) they come to me 🙂
Laure says
O_O If you ever get that job, you can hire me as your assistant, because that sounds like the perfect job to me!
You look so gorgeous in your wedding photo!
Dominique says
Yes all the time ! Especially when it comes to M.A.C. So many LE products, so many textures that it’s not that easy to say ” yes that would suit you ” or ” no it’s not so pretty on you “. Many of them don’t understand my addiction to makeup, they simply want 2 lipsticks or so for every day or a dinner, moreover they often resent spending 19 € for a lipstick, I would gladly help but sometimes it is impossible. Most of my M.A.C lippies are LE so….What can I do ? Sending them to you is a good option ! 🙂
Cindy (Prime Beauty) says
Yes, I get asked all the time for makeup, skincare and fashion advice from my friends and co-workers. I enjoy giving it too! My niece is the only one that is really into makeup as much as I am though–we could both talk for hours about the nuances of taupe eye shadow!
Meahlyn says
Omg girl, you just described the way it is between me and my two closest girl friends! Anywho, most of my friends ask me for beauty advice just cause I’m the biggest beauty nerd like you! It feels nice knowing that others trust your opinion especially if it deals with such a major body part, the face!
Alison says
The Kitten Covers made my day. Live Through This is also one of my favorite albums from my youth (and to this day!). You have fantastic taste in music, says the girl who emailed you about Green Day. haha

I don’t get asked makeup questions very much. I’m often asked what product or perfume I’m wearing as the colour looks good or it smells good but for makeup advice, not so much.
Carla N. says
Oh, YES!
I have a friend who’s actually come over to my house for “makeup lessons!”
Even AT CHURCH I am known as “the makeup diva,” not because I wear a lot, but because, people tell me, my own makeup “always looks so good.”

My friends don’t, but several of my dance mom family ask me to do their kids makeup for competition and recital.
Chelsea says
People ask me quite a bit for advice or insight! It’s nice to be needed!
OMG I love Kitten Covers. The little Public Enemy kitties are so cute! And the Footloose kittycat!

My cousins ask me for bit of advice 🙂 I do them tell them and if i don’t get it, i’ll get the info from outside!!

I get beauty questions pretty often from my friends. We’re all in that “I have young kids now and don’t need to look like a runway model but still want to feel put together” phase. My favorite questions are oddly not about lipstick but skin care. I love helping friends make a lasting difference that they truly appreciate. And they *always* tell me about compliments they get from others after learning to better care for their skin. The smiles on their faces always make me feel so good. It’s all about self-confidence!!

Yes, but i’d say it’s more of a discussion than me giving them advice. I think I learn as much from them as they would from me. Sometimes they’ll ask me what products I swear by or tell me a problem and I’ll recommend something. Usually I find there’s a difference in the way we like beauty. For example, my husbands cousin is a thrift shopper, but I’m all about quality. So sometimes the recommendations don’t really apply. But none the less I still love talking about makeup. I’m pretty sure it’s become one of my hobbies!
Ankita@corallista says
Yes they do, all the time!

My friends ask me all the time, but my obsession for makeup is something they find hard to understand
Angel says
Yes! I actually got my sister into having more fun with her makeup and I’ve been teaching her about different brands and whatnot. And my best friend is practically just starting out and doesnt know anything. We went shopping the other day and I filled her head with so much information I think she got a little flustered 🙂 They both ask me questions all the time because they know I’m constantly watching YouTube tutorials and reading blogs like yours!
Thanks for all you do!

When I wear makeup to work (which I rarely do these days, since my skin gets horribly oily from running around and being on my feet all day) people will ask what I’m wearing. I’ve also gotten asked how I maintain my thick hair and get it Pantene shiny….they are usually disgruntled to hear that I don’t use a ton of product and don’t blow dry or flatiron it to get it that way….However, because it has a slight wave and can get a little dry being so thick, I do use a bit of argan oil by Garnier Fructis. Cheap, moisturizes, protects, and gets the job done.
Mimi says
my sister will ask and then never follows my recommendations… she always just buys bare minerals! my friends ask occasionally but i wish they would always ask me first! hate to see them spend a lot of money on something that isn’t very good!
