YSL Parisienne Eau de Parfum, $85 for 3-oz. bottle
I do, particularly fall and winter versus summer and spring. In the colder months, I gravitate toward fragrances with heavier notes, like musks, roses and blackberries. They just feel cozier and more appropriate for colder climes to me.
I’ve been trying to find new fragrances to alternate with some my old fall standbys like Stella, Coco Mademoiselle, Givenchy Irresistible and Vera Wang Look.
Have you had a chance to sniff Yves Saint Laurent’s new YSL Parisienne? Give it a try when you get a chance. It’s a blend of blackberry, Damask rose (used a lot to flavor food and make rose water) and sandalwood. That’s the bottle shown up top.
The scent kinda reminds me of Stella because they have the same rose thing going on, but it also has the blackberry and a pinch of pepper.
Do you wear different fragrances in fall, and are there any you come back to year after year?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Solé says
Absolutely! In spring/summer I prefer fresh green and citrusy perfumes, as those lighter scents don’t overwhelm me in the intense dry heat of LA summers. In fall/winter, I lean more towards woody orientals or floral orientals, mainly heavier, gourmand scents, because they seem so much cozier, as you described it.
Lately though, none of my favorite perfumes smell the same to me because I started wearing natural perfumes and the synthetic ones just smell strange and overly strong to me now. It kind of sucks because I have a pretty extensive collection that I’m probably going to end up selling on eBay.

Karen,
I buy fragrance twice a year (spring/summer and fall/winter). My favs are DKNY Be Delicious, DKNY Red Delicious, Clinique Happy Heart, and Clinique Happy Heart In Bloom. Last fall I wanted Flowerbomb which I think I might buy however that YSL Fragrance sounds delish.. will have to give it a sniff.
Hafsa says
Actually, I don’t really switch. Yes, I do have some perfumes that seem more spring/summer than fall/winter, but i’m the kind of person where if I like it, I’ll wear it.
My go-to, all time favorite is Stella! I literally wore that all year long, so much so that friends and people around me started saying it was my “signature” scent! If they were in my car, they would say, oh it smells like you, your essence is in the car LOL. And I never intended that to happen, I just liked the scent that much.
My next fragrance purchase is probably going to be Juicy Couture’s Viva La Juicy, I really like it.
A perfect scent for fall/winter is Prada’s D’Iris perfume, its beautiful, as is Calvin Klein’s Euphoria Blossom (but that might be a summery scent)

I have tons of bottles and samples so it is necessary for me to rotate, lol – but I usually prefer heavier notes and concentrations during the colder months. I usually just put on what I am in the mood for, you can catch me in a white floral any time of the year! But this summer I don’t think I have worn my Gucci by Gucci EdP Concentree or Chanel no.5 Parfum – some frags just go with a cold night vibe, you know?
I haven’t tried YSL Parisenne yet, but I think I may have to sniff it soon! I have been craving something rose-based lately.

I do switch fragrances in the fall. When the weather gets colder, I start to wear heavier vanilla or musk based scents, like Calvin Klein’s Obsession (my all time fav), Avon’s Candid or Avon’s Fire Me Up. In the summer, I go for the light citrus or clean fragrance like Ck One or Tommy Girl.

I love light fruity & floral fragrances all year round, though I’d layer it a bit more in Winter, I think. I’m really lazy with perfume (as well as cream, and my own makeup, LOL) so it’s not such a profound answer. 😀

Yes . . . Until this year I tended towards fresher scents for hot weather and warmer scents for cooler weather (like one of the amethysts or black raspberry vanilla), but I was using BBW body splashes. BBW seems to aggravate my sensitive skin, so I’m unable to use those any more. Last year just before Thanksgiving I bought Estee Lauder Pleasures Delight, which is described as a spring scent. It’s too warm scented for me in the hot summer, but I *absolutely* love it in the cool weather. I want to get Prada Infusion d’Iris soon, and I have been wearing Marc Jacobs Rain constantly lately (even spritzing some on before bed), although that may have to be put away when the weather finally cools off.

Scents for me are an ever changing thing…right now, my signature scent is Butterfly by Hanae Mori. LOVE IT!! It’s me to the core. Last night I made that simple dish with the Pasta-roni shells and tomatoes and basil. Y-U-M! Sooo simple, and so yummy. We had some fresh garden tomatoes I didn’t want to waste. I ended my evening with a much anticipated massage. You could have poured me into a glass, I was so relaxed. I even went with a new therapist. He was great: anyone who can get rid of my terrible headaches in less than 5 is tops in my book! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Nancy,
Yay! I’m glad you liked the recipe. Garden tomatoes are the best. I tried growing some a few years ago but they got attacked by aphids. How do you keep the insects away? Any tips? I tried this all natural pepper spray, but it ended up making the tomatoes taste peppery.

Hi Miss Karen!
I am a HUGE fan of OG Stella hahaha – I kinda like the Stella Nude version too – the bottom grapefruit note gives it a little kick. It lightens up the mood if anything. I love YSL scents cuz it always reminds me of the 90’s when my mom wore Paris everyday when she worked for a bank. I discovered a Dior scent that I am loving each day – don’t know the full title but I know it has the word Portofino and you featured it here because it’s packaged in such a pretty bottle. I had a sample made at Nordstrom and I wear it everyday at work. It just makes me feel put together even if I’m having a bad hair day, my outfit didn’t work or my makeup was just mediocre. Thanks for introducing that scent to me now I must find Parisienne because I love rose scents and love that Kate Moss is the face of that scent!
Karen says
Hi Lexi,
Yup, that’s Portofino. It’s the perfect scent for work — light, but not too overbearing. Are you gonna get a bottle?
lexi says
oh sorry, to answer your question yes, I put away my light scents and start wearing heavier ones to usher in fall/winter. this is about the time I start to use my juicy couture, Lovely (if I want a musk scent) and for a light work scent Marc Jacobs Pear single note spray.
Karen says
Hi Lexi,
Oh, Lovely! I almost forgot about that one! That’s a fantastic scent for fall and winter…

I have such a hard time finding perfumes that I like, I think I’m just difficult! I only have one perfume that I don’t wear in the summer and save for winter moreso than fall and thats Beautiful by Estee Lauder – there’s something about the smell that evokes all things christmassy for me, I don’t know why!

Karen says
Hi Beth,
Yah, I can see that. I like Beautiful a lot on other people, but just not on me. It’s a very feminine and pretty scent, though!
Hope you’re enjoying your weekend. Doing anything fun?
Eru says
I am a L’Eau D’Issey girl in spring and summer (it smells so fresh and clean!) And this fall and winter I’m going to be using Something About Sofia by BeneFit. I love it, but it is a bit too heavy for the warmer days. 😀

Hi Eru,
Oh, I love that scent, too. It’s kinda Coco Mademoiselle-ish to me!

I definitely start craving the warm, vanilla-y foodier scents when the weather starts cooling down. Not sure that I have one yet, though I think L’Occitane’s Green Tea EDT will be a nice transition for fall. And actually, even though TBS’s Moroccan Rose was originally a spring/summer scent for me, I sometimes like light airy scents on crips mornings. I much prefer Moroccan Rose to Stella which I found slightly acrid and very cold feeling (everyone else loved it on me though lol). I will have to check out Parisienne – might like it better than Stella and I looove rose scents. =)
.-= Catherine’s last blog post… Swap with Stella! =-.
Karen says
Hi Catherine,
Have you smelled Givenchy Irresistible? It’s one of my favorite rose scents.
Sonja says
Well, I use Coco Mademosielle all year round but Marc Jacobs (original one, black bow tie) only during fall/winter and a bit of spring because I think it’s too heavy for summer (especially dry and hot Mediterranean summers). They are my 2 signature scents and I rarely improvise with new ones!
I’m gonna give the new YSL a sniff, I like their fragrances. And maybe the new D&G ones too, although their scents just don’t seem to suit me.
It’s always the same with perfumes with me- I adore them at first sniff, buy them, and then when I wear them for a week I start hating them and feeling nausea when even sniffing that perfume.
Karen says
Hi Sonja,
Hmm, maybe you can get a sample made first and try that at home for a week? That way you can give it a test run before you commit. I know Nordie’s is very good about giving samples out.
I hope you like the new YSL!

I’m addicted to perfumes, I have more than 30 and I wear them according to season. In the summer I wear those fragrances who are made to be worn in the summer (usually the summer editions of Eternity by Calvin Klein) and in the fall and winter I worn more stronger fragrances. My favorites are Euphoria by Calvin Klein, I wear Euphoria Blossom and Spring Temptation during spring-summer, Euphoria Classic in autumn-winter and Euphoria Crystal in winter. They all have something in common and I guess is the pomegranate and orchid notes. During the fall I also wear Secret Obsession by CK, Valentino Rock and Rose and Valentino classic.

Hi Tavia,
I can see you are a CK girl. Have you ever worn CK One? That used to be one of my favorite scent back in the 90s.

Living in the Bay Area (ya know…) I tend to switch out fragrances by mood and weather more than season! That said, in colder weather I like “warmer” perfumes with spicy or incense notes, or deep vanilla scents (I adore Guerlain’s Spiritueuse Double Vanille). In warm weather I like light florals (I loved DKNY Fresh Blossom this year) or I might kick up the citrus a notch with a spritz of Fresh Sugar Lychee over whatever I’m wearing!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Can you believe another season of fall is upon us? I feel like we just started summer!
amy says
i don’t really switch I just wear what I like and what I feel like that day. I tend to like lighter and more subtle scents anyway. However, my favourite scent is Body Shop Vanilla Perfume oil and I think it transcends all seasons. I do however would layer Vanilla perfume over a spicy scent like Aquolina Chocolovers for something spicier for evenings or colder months.

Hi Karen,
I do like your violet lip look. BTW-ULTA has some great lippies. I think that this week still, they are $4 rather than the usual $8. Here is one of my ULTA faves in purple. It is called Amethyst Shimmer-a gorgeous frosty metallic mauvey lilac purple shade. Hard to describe, yet a steal for the price. Now back to the scents. Yes I do like to change up my scents with the seasons while balancing my need to try new things. For my birthday, Dear Hubby bought me Wazamba, named after a Western African musical instrument. It is a nice combo of many notes. Along with sandalwood and myrhh, there are tones of pine and apple. That is what I will probably wear throughout the fall and winter. When I get bored with that, I have my old standbys-Lolita Lempicka, Allure, Chanel No. 5, and Hanae Mori. You looked good in that shade. I say go for it and your combination of colors I would call Purple Passion. How about that? Today, I helped “redd up” my neighborhood for the G20 summit. But I am wondering if they will come off the beaten path and visit my ‘hood and whether the streets and alleys will stay clean until then??? Have a great weekend. Louise

Hey Karen
I’ve had a busy and painful day today! I’ve been having problems with my calf muscles for the last few months and I finally bit the bullet and went to see a sports massage therapist to get it fixed. It was *SO* painful, I can’t even describe it. She told me to expect pain for a good 3 or 4 days while the muscles recover :o(
I went out to the theatre and caught a matinee this afternoon which was pretty good and this evening I’m just going to chill out in front of the tv and rest my aching legs!
I hope you’re having a great weekend so far!

I totally switch scents in the fall, and I reach for Burberry Brit. It’s so spicy and warm! Whenever I smell it I think of crunchy leaves, scarves & sweaters, bonfires, and apple orchards. 🙂 Scents really are powerful when it comes to memory recollection!

In summer I love lemon scents and in winter cinnamon, evergreen, and violet(although not together LOL).I love Victoria’s secret Blackberry/ Tonka bean fragrance. Test it sometime. I like it’s natural smell. I don’t like synthetic smells too much. I often get a headache.
Kat says
I love Chanel No. 5 all year long, but I think its more a fall/winter fragrance, whereas I really love on Juicy Couture in the summer.
