If I know ahead of time that I’m going to be spending a lot of time outside and it’s a sunny day, like if I’m going sightseeing in the city, going for a hike or doing something like kayaking (which I highly recommend!), I try to do something to protect my hair.
Usually that’s putting it up in a low bun and hiding it under a brimmed hat, or hiding out under an umbrella if I remembered to bring one (or if I’m hanging out by the pool).
My gal pal/stylist Alis always reminds me to cover my hair in the sun (yup, I have colored hair from roots to ends), and she knows my hair very well. It’s one of those things I always try to remember…but it usually slips my mind. I definitely notice that my color jobs last longer when I’m good about it though.
Just gotta remember!
How about you? Do you do anything to protect your hair from the sun?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Sometimes I’ll use a product with a uv filter if I have it on hand. For gardening, I usually wear a straw hat I got at TJ Maxx forever ago. Normally, it’s just pulled back. I used to have a military patrol cap style hat but my sister knicked it along with my expensive hiking boots.

I use Banana Boat Sport Body and Scalp spray with SPF 30. It makes my hair nice and soft like a leave in conditioner, but the main reason I use it is so I don’t get a dreaded sunburn on the scalp where I part my hair. I think everyone should have some, especially people with thinning hair on a hot day! Luckily I don’t have thinning hair, but I bought some for Dad who can really use it. I’m baffled as to why this great product isn’t available at every drugstore, but I buy it on Amazon.

Not for the sun, but I’ll wear a head wrap if it’s windy. 🙂

I am guilty of not protecting my hair whilst out in the sun. Wearing hats make my head feel hot and umbrellas are a bit cumbersome sometimes.
My hair is naturally black and during the summer, the sun bleaches certain parts of it resulting in a high-lighted effect…not sure whether that is a good look or not!
Fancie says
No but I just recently learned that my hair needs sun protection too so I’m going to start being a little more diligent about protecting my strands from the sun
Amanda says
Gotta wear a hat. The sun will make quick work of fading your hair color. It’s also downright painful for me to see people standing in direct sunlight without a hat.
Jessica says
Nope.
I do exactly nada.

I know I need to, but I don’t. This summer I started wearing a baseball hat to protect my face and noticed the top of my hair was in better shape than the bottom.

You Look so great Karen 😉 wow

Nope, that’s something I rarely think about, but probably should! I have black hair, so my head definitely gets hot. When we were on vacation back in June, I did remember to wear a hat every now and then.
This made me wonder if they make sunscreen for cats. They love to lay in the sun by the patio door for hours at a time and sometimes I worry about them! I think Mingus would look good in a Panama Hat. 🙂

If I know I’m going to be in the sun a lot I try to use special sun protection shampoos and conditioners or at least color protection products. And I always wear a hat when I’m out in the sun for long periods of time.
Lulle says
I probably should, but I don’t. I kind of like the highlights that the sun gives me!
Iris says
Sadly, I don’t. I do “aftercare” for my hair using glosses, conditioners, shampoos, etc. but I haven’t used any UV protective hair oils/glosses and I don’t wear hats. This could be why my hair is lighter than it was when I was a teen.

I’m terrible about protecting my hair/scalp when I’m in the sun! I usually find myself out in the sun wishing I had a hat, telling myself “YOU WILL BUY A HAT THE NEXT TIME YOU’RE AT THE STORE” and the next time I’m at the store, I see all of the makeup and thoughts of buying a hat have flown right out of my mind. 😛

If I’m in the desert at the pool – yes, a baseball cap is necessary. But in San Diego, not so much .. I can see the color fading for sure. I have the Paul Mitchel Color protect spray, but I do forget to use this most days 😛

I use sealants and/or leave-in conditioners with sunscreen. I use shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair to protect the color.
Kwmechelle says
Nope. Mostly because my mane is so big. Or I’ll have it in a protective style where it’s not possible to put it into a hat, like Bantu knots. I prefer to let this mane fly wild & free. Because I have so much of it, a hat would also make me hot. But in the winter or fall, you’ll always catch me rocking a beanie or wool half wrap. They’re so fashionable.
Chelsea says
Not really, but since I’ll wear hats to protect my scalp and face, they get protected.
Carla says
I was looking for a good UV protectant for my hair this summer and couldn’t find any recs anywhere! People just wear hats I guess? I’d really like to find a good one since I have brightly coloured hair and I don’t like hiding it all summer!
Tatiana says
Hats! I have a huge collection. I no longer color my hair, I’m enjoying the gray. I’m also super fair, so I love a hat with a good large brim. I have at least two hats in my car and my hubbies. I also have hats in the front closet and in my trunk at the barn. Heck I think I even have one in my daughter’s car in case I go anywhere with her. This way I always have a hat nearby. Of course, I almost always have helmet or hat hair because of this.
LindaLibraLoca says
Wearing a hat is what I do to protect my face anyway, and usually I try and use a UV-Product. But they are too heavy for my fine hair most of the time.
Meghan says
YES. I have to, for two reasons. One, I’m very fair and spontaneously combust in the sun. If I’m going to be in direct sunlight for more than 3 minutes I (sometimes reluctantly, I admit) wear a hat. I do this to protect my scalp from UV rays because you can’t really get a good layer of sunscreen on your noggin’. And scalp burns are the worst. A hat adds extra protection to my face and, depending on the hat, chest and shoulders. The second reason is that I pay good money to have my hair colored and the sun strips it right out!

I’ll wear a baseball cap if I’m playing golf or doing something not-too-physical. If I’m hiking, I’ll usually put it in a ponytail and give it a little hit of sunscreen. I just get WAY too hot having my head even partially covered (like with a Buff headband) when I’m working out/doing strenuous hiking.

I used a hair CC cream once that was supposed to protect my hair from the sun. I was also going canoeing. Unfortunately, whatever was in the cream smelled really nice to flies, and I had a particularly amorous horse fly follow me halfway down the river. I got so frustrated I almost whacked myself in the head with a paddle trying to kill him!

I do use sunscreen on my hair daily in the summer months and in winter if it is sunny. I’m curious which nail polish and lip gloss you r wearing it looks gorgeous on your skin colour!!
Sissi says
Yes! I use the Colorproof Wicked Shine spray that includes UV protection. I also like to wear hats- at least at the pool or beach. I am blonde and if I don´t protect my hair it can get brassy.
