I get these intense cravings for dim sum every once in a while, and it’s all I can think about.
I even dream about it sometimes. Mmm… Those little soup dumplings that squirt into your mouth when you bite into them. MAN! They’re SO GOOD.
I’m not gonna do it justice, but what is dim sum? It’s like Chinese-style tapas with small appetizer plates. At most places, servers push carts around the tables with different dishes displayed on them, and you pick and choose which ones you want.
Yum!
There are bite-sized doughy dumplings with meat or seafood mixed with a few veggies like cabbage or carrots inside them, and various steamed, fried or baked buns stuffed with BBQ, pickled or steamed meat or veggies.
It’s great because you can try a bunch of different things, and if you go with a group and everyone shares, it’s even better.
That’s what we did for Mother’s Day. We drove out to the East Bay and had a fun, delicious meal at BK’s Bistro in Fremont.
Highly recommended if you’re ever out that way. It’s not super fancy, but it’s not super expensive either, and the food is fresh, interesting, and they get it to your table fast.
The portions are also bigger than usual, so don’t make the same mistake we did by ordering 20 dishes for five adults and a toddler because you expect them to come out on tiny little plates (because that’s what happens at a lot of dim sum places in the city). The BK’s dumpling dishes are massive by comparison. HUGE. So, you will be stuffed when you leave!

Aww, love the pic of you and your mom! Sounds like you had a delicious day. I’m with Connor – it’s hard not to love fried rice. 🙂
Karen says
How can you NOT love fried carbs? LOL!
What did you guys do for Mother’s Day? I hope those boys spoiled you!
Kim says
Exactly! We brought my parents out to a brunch that my father is still raving about. Even our picky eater had a heaping plate, so it was a good choice! Aside from that, it was a very relaxed day at home. That’s so rare that I couldn’t have been happier. 🙂

That sounds lovely. You guys are always so busy — you’ll miss it when they go off to college. Every parent I talk to who has a kid in a sport seems to ALWAYS be driving somewhere to something! I have a friend in HIIT class who’s daughter is a senior on the high school diving team. They used to have 5 am workouts and she’d drive her daughter there 3 times a week freshman through junior year (now she has her own license).

If you love Asian food, you should try Laotian food someday. I recently had it and it’s delicious!

Hi Karen,
I hope you had an amazing Mother’s Day! Judging from the pics, it looks like you had lots of fun!
I *always* tear up when you post pictures of you with your mom: you guys just seem to get on so well, and she really reminds me of my mom, who died 4 years ago. Seriously, cherish every moment you have with her!
Karen says
I’m sorry for your loss, Sara. Sending you a hug!

I would’ve helped you clear the food stat! Gosh, that noodle roll (don’t know the exact name) looks so good right now; it’s my favorite dim sum. I notice that in the picture where Connor is smiling, her nose wrinkles up in the same way that yours does! <3
Karen says
Girl, there was SO MUCH OF IT. You would’ve had enough for a few plates *and* a full box of stuff to take home. I have one more custard bun in the fridge to eat tonight after dinner. 🙂
What do you think of soup dumplings?
Jess says
When you mentioned the “little soup dumplings that squirt into your mouth” I immediately thought of BK Bistro. >.<
I love that place!
Karen says
Hi Jess,
You’ll laugh but I accidentally squirted some soup across the table the last time we went, LOL! So crazy. What do you usually order when you go?
