Good morning, glories. 🙂
How’d you sleep?
I’ve only been awake for a few minutes, which means I’m nowhere near awake yet, LOL!
The coffee is brewing, and I’m sitting here at my computer desk, catching up on the news…
The New York Times has a fascinating article about beauty schools and how the curriculum has changed over the past 20 years.
Tabs is stretched out on the floor under my chair and purring loudly. He’s getting a massage from my toes.
I just remembered — I have a birthday coming up this week, whoa! Yup, I’m heading full speed towards my mid-30s.
Age is a funny thing, ladies…
I have a better understanding of myself and the world around me than I had in my 20s, but I’m becoming more resistant to change, more set in my ways. I used to be more willing to take risks! — with my career, my hobbies, travel, you name it.
I think that adventurous girl’s still in there somewhere, but she is getting harder to find.
I hope I’m brave enough to take some chances this year…
Brave like the name of the prize in today’s MAC Style Warrior giveaway!
The prize
One lucky lady will win a tube of creamy MAC Style Warrior Brave New Bronze Lipstick (a $14 value).
How to enter
To enter, please leave a comment below describing the bravest thing you’ve ever done or plan to do soon.
Tell me about your biggest leap of faith or greatest act of courage, a choice that changed your life or took a lot of guts for you to do.
I went skydiving about 10 years ago.
Sometimes I can’t believe I went through with it. They had me sign a waiver where the words “death and dismemberment” came up repeatedly, LOL! But I did it.
Now, whenever something scares or intimidates me, I tell myself, “Karen, you jumped out of a plane. This isn’t half as scary as that.”
I’ll pick the winner at random from among the people who enter by 11:59PM PST Monday night.
Good luck, my brave friends! 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. I had a blast at yesterday’s NARS event in the city. I’m prepping some pictures and tips and will post them very soon.

The bravest thing I have ever done is — natural child birth (yep epidural-free)! I know I’m not the first, nor the only one that had done this, but for someone who will holler for an EMT in an event of a paper cut, this is something that will go down in our family’s “Ripley’s Believe It or Not record book”!

The bravest thing ive ever done, (and im a big weeeeenie) is jump off of a boat in the middle of the ocean in Maui (at the molokini crater) to go snorkeling.
The second i jumped off, I started to hyperventilate as my loving bf swam off to explore without me. As i start to have a panic attack while the waves were pushing me back n forth…. i began to gain strength and enjoyed the beautiful ocean floors of Maui 🙂
Im sure snorkeling is one of the easiest things to do…. but that sure as hell was one of the bravest thing ive done! hahah

Oh I love heights, I really want to try skydiving sometime! Or maybe I’ll just do hang gliding instead… less chance of ‘death’ and ‘dismemberment’, I’m sure.
Bravest thing I’ve ever done… take two courses’ worth of sailing classes (that’s about 4 weeks) on the ocean; I have quite a phobia of the ocean and so I was terrified for about 6 hours every day for 4 weeks. Capsizing and getting caught in the ropes underwater just made it worse.
Erin says
When I was 16, I was extremely overweight. I got to the point where I was willing to do anything to get myself healthier and looking and feeling better… and I knew that swimming was something I can do well, and it’s wonderful exercise. However, I was in awful shape. I ended up needing to swim with kids years younger than me.. but I still did it, and ended up giving up the summer in between my sophomore and junior years to swim with them every morning. It was slightly hellish, but it got me back into my exercise groove. 🙂 I’ve lost about 80lbs and counting since then.

actually, I want to change my “bravest thing” from the previous post. For me it was probably deciding to join my HS swim team. I was not an exceptionally good swimmer, and I had never been on a sports team in my life. Also, I was self conscious of not being good, shy, and kind of intimidated by some girls on the team (who I knew kind of from classes and stuff, but wasn’t really friends with) who were really good and top of the team. I ended up doing swim team for 2 years and was really proud of that!

I’ve spoken English all my life, been educated in English all my life and I left my family at 18 to live alone half way across the globe, gave up the opportunity to go to top universities in the world (and by top I mean TOP) to come to France and do Engineering in French and live my life in French when I could have been doing that elsewhere much more easily. So now it really irks me when I know people who have 3.8GPA in some university in the UK or US think they are so great because if they were really courageous at all, they would have taken the road not taken, done what I did, come here, start my life over from scratch and have my intelligence here treated like it didn’t exist.

Many people have told me that they wouldn’t have been able to do what I did and they don’t even have those problems.

Okay so i’m the most irresponsible 22 year old around always, always procrastinating and never finishing ANYTHING (seriously, i started painting my nails right now and got bored and came to the computer). But since i’ve met my main squeeze i’ve realized that i gotta get moving on life and starting in august i’ll be starting the respiratory therapy program at my school – and if i’m late once, i risk getting kicked out! it’s only an associate’s degree, but it’s a big deal for me. it’s a lot of discipline and hard work – a no-no in jessica’s ideal world. that’s why i feel so brave doing something that i know wil be the hardest thing i’ll ever do. but really, i’m doing it all for the ability of buying makeup whenever i want.

I swam with great white sharks.
It was the most terrifying moment in my life! 😮
Two years ago I went scuba diving in Guadalupe Island, Mexico with my friends. On the second day there, after a couple of diving lessons, we donned our wetsuit and masks. After a short boat ride out into the ocean, my friend and I were put into a cage, and lowered into the clear blue water. It was only a surface cage, so it wasn’t too far from the boat. My heart started pumping when I spotted two 14 to 18 foot great white sharks as they swam around and fed. I knew that if I left the cage, I would be eaten by the sharks. There were a few close encounters, when the shark got too close to the cage, and many times, I worried about the durability of the cage.
When it was over, I came away unscathed, feeling very accomplished, and thankful that I was able these magnificent creatures up close!!

THe bravest thing I ever did …. Would have to be reading the eulogy at my mother’s fneral. It was such a hard day to begin with having to say good bye, but having to speak publicly and especially at such a hard time was nerve racking. But I did it and just thought about how I wanted everyone to know what my mom meant to me. I am soo happy I did it.

Bravest thing Ive ever done was having voluntary surgery on my vocal chords (two seperate operations, one for each side, each about 6 months apart) while being wide awake with only local anesthesia (!!!) so they could hear my voice and to make sure I was breathing all right. Hands down the bravest- and scariest- thing Ive ever done for myself.

So I have this fear of open water, too many Jaws movies I guess. I was in Puerto Rico last year and had this crazy idea to go snorkeling IN OPEN WATER. The first stop of the tour was a private island with shallow water, perfect. I could see the boat and was close to shore. Second stop, OPEN WATER!! No beach, no island. Jump off the boat and go. This was my chance, SCARY as it was I jumped off the side of the boat. My heart was racing and I looked under water and saw the most beautiful school of fish. My breathing slowed down and off I went. I look forward to my next step, scuba diving!

I’m deathly afraid of heights, but I stood right against the railing on the edge of a HUGE waterfall in Yosemite. The picture of it is hilarious… I look terrified! lol

Bravest thing? Going to London on my own to audition for drama school. And then missing my train and managing to find a youth hostel and a train back home the next day without totally freaking out. It was scary but I figured: if I can do that on my own I must be capable of quite a lot. And I’m so going back next year to audition again 🙂

I went white water rafting this past weekend for the first time. I ended up in a smaller boat than planned; fell overboard; saved and kept paddling with the rest of my group for another 3 hours. By far the most adventurous thing I’ve done in a long time (plus, it’s a good work out too).

There are a few situations in my life in which, looking back, I guess I was “brave”. But the bravest & most difficult was to learn to be myself in all situations. Very hard for me.

The bravest thing I’ve ever done was join the Peace Corps. After a life full of high heels and lip gloss, I decided to step way out of my comfort zone. Everyone told me I couldn’t do it, that they were sure I’d chicken out or quit as soon as I got there.
I moved to Cameroon, West Africa in October 2005 and began the adventure of my life. I lived in a tiny village, where water and electricity were intermittant at best. I taught health topics, like how to avoid HIV and malaria. I ate foods that I never knew existed. I rode in cramped bush taxis with 30 other people. I contracted worms and diseases that were bizarre and sometimes excruciating. And guess what? I loved it. I learned more about myself, the world and the kindness of complete strangers than I ever had before. And I learned that there is no “type” for doing something good, something brave. I could move to the middle of Africa and take the lip gloss with me.
I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

The bravest thing I ever did was not to run away when my fiance was diagnosed with severe depression and borderline personality disorder with suicidal tendencies. Sadly, he died in 2003, but I am the better person for making his last years as happy as they could be given his situation.

I have recently had to acknowledge the fact that I hated my program at a top Canadian university that I have attended for the past two years. I start a new program at a college in the fall where I will be receiving a degree in applied business for human resources and I can’t be more excited!
The brave part for me would be telling my parents and people close to me that I did not want to continue at university. I was afraid of what they might think and kind of ashamed because I felt that my parents would be mad since they have been helping me financially. They can’t be more supportive and just want me to be happy, so I am so glad I did it! I was terrified of telling them! I’m still scared to start a new program in the fall but I know I can do it!

The bravest thing I have ever done so far has been to walk away from a verbally abusive relationship when I was 17. It was terrifying because I had forgotten what it was like to be happy on my own, but I’m 21 now and I am so happy that I left when I did 🙂

The bravest thing i’ve ever done was deciding to be a single parent to two beautiful girls and leave an abusive relationship by the age of only 18. I had my first baby girl when I was 16 and he would tell me “no one is going to want you with a kid” among many other hurtful and degrading things so I thought I had to stay with him. I was young and stupid and he made me feel like I had to have sex with him. I ended up getting pregnant again and I hid that from my parents until I was about 6 months. While pregnant with my 2nd daughter I just woke up one day and told him I was through that if I stayed with him he would only drag me down and I wasn’t going to let him do that to me or most importantly my girls. He’s in and out of jail and off and on drugs best thing and bravest thing I’ve ever done. And WE are doing just fine!!

I’ve done quite a few scary things, buying a house with a tight budget and getting married were the biggest things so far. But the bravest thing I’m planning to do is have our first child. I know millions of women have children, but it’s still one of the most bravest things a woman can go through in life, not only for the pain, but also all the emotions and trials a child brings a parent. I’m looking forward to it though!
