** THE GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED **
This giveaway is closed, and the winner has been contacted (CONGRATULATIONS, TRACY!!!), but check back next Saturday for another Sephora giveaway.
Rise and shine, morning glory. Happy caturday. 🙂 Thank you for all of your kinds words and encouragement this week and for letting me lean on you for a bit. Maybe someday I can return the favor. I get teary every single time I go into the comments on the Quick Hello post from a few days ago.
I’m feeling a lot better already, partially because I’ve made some headway on cleaning my office. I mean…it still looks like a hornet’s nest, but I have done a lot of purging and a little reorganizing, so one step is better than no steps, I guess.
I hope that you’re having a nice morning so far. What are you up to over there?
I’m just going to continue my office cleaning project and maybe (probably) play with some makeup. I do have to hit up the dollar store and The Container Store a little later, but that’s about it. That’s what I’m doing this weekend.
But right now I’m having breakfast. I made more of those Flourless Thumbprint Oatmeal Cookies (yum!) and some scrambled eggs. And some chai tea, which I’m very excited about. 🙂
Have a great weekend, my friend. Talk to you soon.

Good morning,
Happy Caturday to you too. I’m glad to read you’re feeling better, that feeling that you’ve been struggling with really sucks. I’m really happy that it helped to come on here and vent. Holding all that in isn’t healthy.
Does Tabs know when you’re feeling down? My cats always know and seem to be more clingy. It’s funny how some are more sensitive than others but overall I can tell they know and try to give me extra love.
For some reason shopping always makes me feel better. I noticed Loft has 60% off sale items and Gap is running a pretty good sale. Gap has some super cute spring clothes, lots of florals.
Anyway, yes I have seen a meteor shower. It was many, many years ago and it was tough to find a dark enough spot. I was in my late teens maybe, living in Novato with my mom. My sister was visiting so we all drove out to Stafford Lake and put a blanket down on the path so we could lay on our backs. It was pretty dark out there so we got to see a pretty decent show.
Random question, have you ever been to the Butter & Egg Day parade in Petaluma? It’s pretty cute, there are several floats from various businesses and schools in town and of course one with Clo. There’s a cow chip toss competition and they get the City Council and a few high ups from the city to participate.
Have a great day!
Cathy says
Happy Caturday! Just laying here in the couch with my two cats. Our couch then turns into Pride Rock ;).

I got teary eyed reading your other post. I am sad that is the reason for less posts! I enjoy your youtube videos as well!
Chelsea says
I love the Musée de Cluny in Paris! It’s the medieval museum, and there are some tapestries there that I love called The Lady and the Unicorn. In addition to a unicorn, there are other woodland creatures on it, in luding bunnies, which you know I’m partial to.
I’ve never done the Musée D’Orsay, which is the impressionist museum.
shannon mchenry says
When I think of elegant makeup, I think of Audrey Hepburn. Her brows and lips were perfectly defined, and enhanced her natural features. So elegant!!!
Tiffanie says
My family used to camp out on the lawn on blankets whenever there was a meteor shower. Good memories!
Jenny says
Hi Karen! My comment is going to be about your post, “Quick Hello.” I just now read it! I know how you feel. I’m nearing 30, and I still haven’t even finished school yet let alone started a career, … I’m just a stay at home dog/cat mom at the moment (recently lost my job due to my office shutting down), and feel so utterly useless. I wanted to have children by this time in my life, but now that I’m at this age, I am now unsure that I am mother material. Life is confusing sometimes, and knowing when the *right* time is to have kids is difficult. I don’t believe there is ever a perfect time. If you want kids now, why not? My mother-in-law had her last child, my sis-in-law when she was 40 years old. She’s a great mother, and has done wonderfully with her kids. This comment is rambled, and I’m sorry. When I start talking about/thinking about having kids, my brain turns to mush. Haha. <3

I’m glad you’re feeling brighter :). I think it would depend on the circumstance where a stranger would even get the read from me that I want their advice. I love museums … The favorite thus far for me is the British Museum in London UK. I could spend days there. Ox

For me/myself, an ellegant make-up is something like:
skin base md coverage slightly matte;
e/s satin eggplant/purple/bronze with dark brown/purple eye liner;
lips darker version of MLBB;
cheeks satin peach;
discret contouring;
eyebrow correction
Zovesta says
Agreed, that sounds beautiful. =]

I love the Met in NYC. Aside from all the varied and great art, it has such beautiful natural light in its classical sculpture gallery. I could sit there for hours.

Elegant makeup means using a light hand while still defining features to bring out your best you while keeping it understated.
Jennifer says
Gee, these are difficult questions for me this morning.
I guess I would have to say the St. Louis Art Museum is my favorite. That was my childhood museum and it really is a first class institution.
I can’t settle on a spice, I have too many I love. My top three would be cinnamon, cumin, cloves.
Anne says
So glad you’re feeling better :-)!
My favourite museum is the Natural History Museum in London. I love the building – it looks like Hogwarts!
Random information: I’ve just spent A LOT of money on makeup. Do I have to feel bad about that? Sometimes I feel so guilty for splurging, but I couldn’t resist :-/. Tom Ford Pussycat – awesome on the lips, terrible on the wallet…
Have a lovely day!

Lulle says
Glad to know you’re feeling better! 🙂
My favorite museum would be the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. It’s an art museum dedicated to the second half of the 19th century (until WW1 actually), which is an incredibly creative period in the history of art.

It’s super-stormy here in the Seattle area & I wish I was tucked up in bed with a great book…but I’m avoiding my housemates’ noisy family gathering!
My favorite spice right now is cardamom. It adds a wonderful warm note to baked goods & it’s a nice change of pace from cinnamon. I have a cardamom cookie recipe which is pretty much butter, kinda like a shortbread.

Since moving here my favorite spice is cardamom, Finns put it in so many baked goods! It’s delicious.

I definitely relate to your feelings about age and life. As a single 33 year old woman, I have started to panic about whether I will ever find someone and get married. I always told myself it will happen eventually, but I am starting to feel the the pressure. I appreciate how open and honest you are about your current life struggles. I hope you find comfort in knowing that you are not alone.
Jen C says
Oh some progress is definitely better than none at all, Karen!
To me an elegant makeup look consists of a defined (but not overly harsh) brows, and an all-matte, smokey eye look. With MLBB lips. And a light blusher. Hmmmmm.

First off, I love that photo of Tabs. Brilliant! Not to sound too corny but my favorites are my kids. My son is 7 years old and my daughter is 7 months old. Not only are they comprised of the best parts of myself and husband, shmooshed together into tiny people, but they remind us that anything is possible. That the world and life is ever changing not just day to day but moment to moment. They bring out our best and force is to face our worst. I am thankful for my minis.
Courtney says
Nope, I’ve never seen a meteor shower, but I’d absolutely love to!
Have a good weekend Karen 😀
Olivia says
I have never received unsolicited makeup advice from a stranger in public and thank god I never have! I think it’s rude. Of course sometimes you’re going to see someone’s makeup and think they didn’t do the best job but we’ve all been there. We all start somewhere and you never begin as a pro

Hello! Happy caterday to you too! How cute is that cat. We just had to find a loving home for our two kittens. My daughter became allergic all of a sudden and started having asthma attacks and breaking out in hives every time she touched them 🙁 So weird after months of having them and her having no reaction at all! Anyhow…
I have seen a meteor shower. I love them. I seek out those and eclipses and try to watch any in my area any chance I get. My #1 bucket list is to go to Alaska to see the Northern Lights. I’d love to see them anywhere actually, but I want to go to Alaska so bad so putting the both things I want to see so bad together=#1 bucket list item! Have a great day! 🙂

Happy Caturday!
Jennifer says
I love watching meteor showers! Last year we seemed to have clouds or rain during almost every one. The best we ever saw was in November – the Leonids, maybe – about 10 years ago. The meteors came one after another.
We were also lucky enough to see the Northern Lights once. Beautiful!!
Tracy Robertson says
I’m glad that you are feeling better! Our brains are complicated machinery and sometimes one little chemical will misfire and it makes us feel terrible! That happens to me now and then. When it does, I tell myself that I probably won’t have a great day, but I’ll make the most of it by getting something done, even if it’s only a load of laundry, and I know the next day will be better!
I have never, ever had a total stranger give me unsolicited makeup advice. That sounds really funny. I would like to hear stories about that. I don’t know how I would feel if that happened to me. I guess it depends on the strangers attitude and if the advice was any good or not, LOL!

unsolicited make up advice.. i guess it depends on how and what they’re saying. Like if they’re pointing something out that’s negative..then no, keep your thoughts to yourself. But if they’re saying something like a certain color would look good on you or a brand you might like… then ok that’s no harm.
Lulubelle says
My favorite spice is black pepper, and I use it liberally. Happy to hear you are feeling better and are making progress on your office. I recently purged/decluttered mine, and now I enjoy walking in in the mornings and starting work. My house is another story, but I did make progress with organizing my dresser drawers. I was inspired by reading articles on “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing” by Marie Kondo, which I’ve got wait listed at my library.

I dislike people who give unsolicited make up advice unless I’m in a department store or in a make up store giving myself side eye in the makeover chair, and even then I’m not too big on it… I don’t like it when it comes to trying on clothes. One time I tried on a dress, came out the fitting room to look in the fool length mirror, and the older sales lady said “Oh, that would look great with a girdle.” I did an awesome job of holding my tongue. lol.

Amanda Sakovitz says
I’ve never seen a meteor shower before
Johnna Quick Owens says
One of my favorite memories is a meteor shower. It was in the late fall, a beautiful clear night, no clouds, crisp air. My wife and I laid out blankets on the shore of the lake, had a small fire for warmth, and watched the meteors shooting through the sky over the lake. The reflection in the water made it look like twice as many meteors, and it was a breath-taking sight. We watched all night, only packing up and leaving when the sun finally started to peek over the horizon. One of the best nights….
Sanam says
I’ve never seen a meteor shower in real life.

I think elegant makeup is mostly your face but better in every aspect. Enhancing your features without being over the top. But this is just my opinion. I think everyone who wears makeup should wear it how they want to. It’s an expression.

I don’t think I give unsolicited makeup advice!
Abby says
I don’t get a whole lot of unsolicited makeup advice, but I do get a lot of comments. My hair is generally a bright color (right now it’s purple and blonde) so I have a hard time matching my eyebrows and will usually use the electric palette. So I get a lot of comments on my hair color and how cool it is that my eyebrows match! I see it as a compliment!
Illy Junus says
My favorite spice is Turmeric, is Asian spice. I love spices,i hope you feel lots better and happy organizing, inspired me to do that too. It’s time to let go things and save space for new things
Elena says
What’s your favorite museum and why?
That is hard to pick! I really liked the Vatican Museum because there is so much stuff there! The Louvre is amazing in its own respect-very cool to see all the Egyptian stuff (sorry Mona Lisa is a little over hyped to me) And I really loved the Uffizi Gallery because I loved studying Renaissance art.
Have you ever seen a meteor shower?
Yes! So awesome to watch and count them!
What’s your favorite spice?
CINNAMON. In excessive amounts. I always put it in my coffee and any recipe that uses it I always do a lot more!
How do you feel about strangers in public who give unsolicited makeup advice?
I’m that stranger. Well usually it is just complements and if the person likes makeup and we get to talking it can lead to advice!
I meant to comment on the quick hello thread…you are awesome Karen! Hope you are feeling better and just know that anything is possible. Warm thoughts your way!
Gina Bullard says
My favorite person is/was my Dad. I miss him everyday — and I’ve been very depressed today. It’s getting a little better – I’d like to be in your shoes and it just be about being (le sigh) 40 . I hope your feeling better though, I know how it is to be emotional…

“What’s your favorite museum and why?”
I miss the old California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. I have so many memories of it. I hate the new one! Ugh! So now the Museum of Natural History in New York is my current fave. Funny how I’m an artist, and I prefer science museums to art museums.
“How do you feel about strangers in public who give unsolicited makeup advice?” Oh NOOOOOOO. That’s so rude.
Becca M says
The coolest person I know is my Dad. I learned a lot from him about how you have to do your own thing, and not care if anyone else likes it or not. He’s also wicked funny and will always be there to help in whatever way you need. Yep, he’s the coolest.

Hi Karen! I’m so happy to hear you’re starting to feel better and that you proactively bagan the clutter cleaning! It’s soo overwhelming to start that, and feels so good after! :)! Keep positive, girl!
A couple of weeks ago I played hard with my new MAC 15 eye palette. A brand new coworker of mine who I barely knew said “whoa, is it New Years Eve?!”
Either I was WAY too excited about this palette and put too many shades on, or she’s jealous of it!! 🙂
Tania G says
I am so glad you are feeling better. Sometimes thinking of how much you need to get done is overwhelming and you don’t even want to start. Try to think of little things that you can accomplish. Little steps at at time. It won’t seem so overwhelming! Have a wonderful weekend!

What’s your favorite museum and why? Hands down The Smithsonian. That’s totally cheating bc it’s made up of a lot of museums but it’s what came to mind. I could spend weeks there and shut out the rest of the world.
Who’s the coolest person you know? My closest friends and family are all amazing and cool.
Have you ever seen a meteor shower? Nope–hopefully at some point in life.
How do you feel about strangers in public who give unsolicited makeup advice? It’s startling every time. Sometimes it’s nice–especially if they’re enthusiastically raving about whatever product I’m beholding. Other times, it can be awkward–especially if it is advice that can be taken as an insult (whether or not they meant well).
When you think “elegant makeup,” what comes to mind? Lisa Eldridge, hands down. Makeup I’d classify as “fun” suddenly become elegant when she presents it. In fact, whenever I want to look elegant, I check out her videos.
Carla says
Hi there. I donated my bed to the Salvation Army today. I wasn’t using it anymore and I figured someone else could get good use out of it. It was in very good condition. My taste in furniture has changed over the years. It was time to move on. Have a great weekend!

Yes, when I was a new-ish bride, my hubs and I woke our toddler up in the middle of the night, scooped him and bundled him and took him to the beach to see the shower(too much light pollution in the city, and beach is only a few blocks from us). The beach was cold so we huddled under blankets to watch nature’s fireworks streak across the sky. Wonderful memory!

When I think of elegant makeup, I think of 1930s makeup, usually. And the actresses in the Miss Marple/Poirot series, they are always beautifully done up. Here’s the height of elegance, imo:

I’m adopting this way of life to stay thin and healthy!! Now the side effects of this weight loss is wonderful!! The #1 being all the awesome self confidence..I am so proud of myself for accomplishing such a monumental goal. Hello Karen! Although I’ve been subscribed in your email listserv, I haven’t entered in one of your giveaways yet! I believe elegant makeup to be a bit on the pricey side. However, it has to have very good pigmentation, coverage, while being able to look flawless – in the eyes of the artist.

Happy Caturday Karen! Long time reader, first time commenter. I’m happy to hear that you are feeling better! A little project can definitely help you take your mind off of the bigger stressors in life. Just wanted to tell you to hang in there! You are one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to blogging, your posts never cease to make me smile. Big life changes always have a way of turning us into emotional rollercoasters – I decided to make a big career change from a cushy 9-5 job and into makeup when I turned 30 two years ago and I kind of experienced the same thing. I felt I was standing on the edge of a cliff looking into oblivion and looking back at the comfortable ledge I was standing on. Its unexplainable but its fear and excitement at the same time – the oblivion of “what ifs”. But just know that you are a hero to a lot of us and we consider you our fabulous cat lady friend across the keyboard. And I love how you appreciate fonts as much as I do! Feel better Karen! And ditto-ing on almost everyone’s piece that you look more stunning than ever and love that we can “pseudo-chat” face to fave now via YT!

I’ve indeed seen a meteor shower – twice! I usually don’t see them because I’m living right in the middle of the city and the lights are too bright during nighttime, but in my honeymoon on Maui we went to see the sunrise at Haleakala and when we arrived at four in the morning, there were so many shooting stars! It was breathtaking. I loved it more than the sunrise (which was awesome too!).

I think unsolicited makeup advice is good if it’s done in an elegant manner. Otherwise, it can be self-esteem crushing. At my cashiering job, I once had a lady lean over the counter, hand me a Mary Kay business card and claimed that I ‘needed to give her a call.’ I was so embarrassed! I was like ‘Where’s a paper bag?! I want to hide my face!”

I too had a hard time, but for me it was turning 30, realizing that I was no longer in my 20’s. 40 wasn’t as bad for me as 30 was. I absolutely used to dread every birthday once I hit 45. But now I’ve learned to embrace my age (cancer survivor!) so I’ve come to a new appreciation of every birthday 🙂 It’s not always easy to do but I think about the alternative and then I’m happy to see what life is like after 50! Hang in there Karen, you’re still very young and have lots of wonderful years ahead of you!
Amber M says

I think my favorite spice is Posh Spice. I really like Victoria Beckham. Oh, wait! Were you talking about the kind of spice you put on food or in drinks? 😀 In that case, then, it would be nutmeg. I put it on all coffee drinks and hot chai, and it tastes comforting to me. It reminds me of pie.

Nicole J. says
“How do you feel about strangers in public who give unsolicited makeup advice?”
I don’t have a major issue with anyone who gives me unsolicited makeup advice because I often take it as someone giving me additional makeup ideas and/or rescuing me from a makeup emergency.
I usually keep it safe in the makeup department; keeping the looks as close to my natural brown skintone with a light hint of color on my cheeks and plum/burgundy lip color. I often seek additional ideas for more colorful and vibrant looks from makeup mavens of the internet (like yourself, Karen ^_^). I always take the advice of others into consideration when researching new products and looks, so I would not feel particularly offended if a stranger on the street gave me advice on how to polish/jazz up my look.
In the past few years, finding the right foundation for my skin color and type has been an (expensive!) struggle. I have made misinformed foundation choices that have left a white cast or oily sheen on my face on many occasions; ruining every picture that I have taken at parties & events. I was mortified to see all of those pictures on my Facebook friends’ pages because I figured that if it was very noticeable in those pictures, my oily or unevenly blended makeup look was visible to the naked eyes of the people around me. If those same strangers or acquaintances who saw me riding the NYC subway or entering the room were brave enough to approach me with advice on my makeup application, I would’ve been embarrassed at first but it would’ve saved me a lot of heartache (and money lol) much earlier in my beauty journey.
Some people can be very rude in their approach, and sometimes you may feel offended even when someone may honestly believe that they are trying to help. The entire notion of someone telling you that what you are doing to express yourself may not be working for you can be very disheartening; it can even ruin the rest of your day/night. When it comes to receiving advice from strangers in public, it is always up to you, the captive audience, to ultimately decide what is best for you. Strangers don’t know you as well as you know yourself, your personal style, your skintone, your skin type, your lifestyle, and your budget. You should always remain confident in your choices while using these advice sessions as lessons for personal growth–Rising above criticism and developing your own personal form of beauty expression. The choice is always yours!
Thanks for hosting this contest, Karen!

Have you ever seen a meteor shower? No, but just a few days ago we “think” we heard a sonic boom “from” a meteor shower. No, really. I heard something crazy loud and the house shook. I though it was a car accident or something fell in the house… until later that night, on Facebook, I realized I wasn’t the only one and it was heard MILES around me. Crazy! Sonic boom was the only thing the news could come up with…

When I think of elegant makeup and dress the golden age of Hollywood comes to mind. But with more eyebrows than they did back then lol.

Everyday is Happy Caturday!! Glad you’re feeling better. One of the coolest people I know is my best friend, Joyce. Even though she’s almost 70, she is SO cool! Her hair is gorgeous and people stop her all the time telling her they love the cut and color. And even when she says she’s dressed down for dinner, there’s no way I dress that nicely. She is just awesome!

I would recommend to everyone Mycenae, an archeological site in Greece. In the second millennium BC, Mycenae was one of the major centres of Greek civilization. I love this place.
Thank you for the chance:)

I’ve never seen a meteor shower, but hope to do so someday! That would be cool. I love all museums! So I really don’t have a favorite. I love anything spicy when it comes to spices! Elegant makeup to me is something from the 30’s-50’s like Audrey Hepburn, or the award shows like the Grammy’s or the Oscars.

The first thoughts I had as I read your post of your emotional struggles were of the saying to be kind to everyone because we do not know what difficulties they may be walking through. One reason is I have thought how incredibly wonderful it would be to have my life together like you do and to test, photograph, write and post about so many products as you do and have a personal life yet maintain a household in all it entails is simply overwhelming to me. I am by no means glad you are distraught but I do thank you for sharing it with us. I can relate to the disorganization so well. Coming from a few years ago perfectionist and having everything clean and organized to the complete opposite is stressful no matter how or why it happened. But being aware of this and starting little by little doing something about it is progress dear heart, it truly is. As far as having children you will arrive at a place as you are going through this journey of life and find serenity I do believe. You have to be true to yourself and God (if you believe in God) will help you with an answer. I have two daughters that are 19 and 21 that are my heart and my world and are truly blessings. Even though I had graduating with a BBA in accounting, was in public accounying and had gotten married it was hard with two children. But I wouldn’t take anything for them. I do believe I would be a much better mother now if I had small children than I was 15-20 years ago because I have more patience, coping skills, etc. and there are disadvantages to starting a family at 40. Again, do what it takes to find peace within and we will all be here if you post daily or once monthly but of course would miss you. Enough of my rambling. Thank you for sharing part of what makes Karen the beautiful lady that you are. I will be praying for you.
