  1. Dominique Smith says:

Yeah I’ve seen a ghost, I see a ghost every time I look in the mirror, *sigh* the ghost is my face in the morning. Everyday is Halloween in my house.

  2. Fran says:

Yes, I’ve carved plenty of pumpkins, and it’s fun! (Those pumpkin-carving kits with the tiny saws are a big help.) But, one year when my son was very young (maybe 3 or 4), someone stole our pumpkin off our porch on Halloween afternoon, before we could carve it. He was beside himself when we got home and it was gone. I went out to get another one, and there were none left in any of the stores in our area. So I bought a big, ulgy, warty-looking Hubbard squash, figuring that that would make a really scary Jack’o’lantern. Well, let me tell you, carving that thing was a bear! Way harder than any pumpkin I’ve ever met! But, it did look pretty cool when I was done…

    • Sophia says:

My favourite halloween costume was in grade 5 and I was a blue crayon. Not one of those skin tight dresses but i had two wood rings one around my shoulders and one around my legs, I was draped in blue material and couldn’t walk very fast. I also had a point blue hat that made me look ridiculous. I love Halloween!!

  3. Joselyn Hernandez says:

    Happy Halloween!!

I’m not much into the Halloween spirit, but did carve a pumpkin this year πŸ™‚

  4. Bridget says:

I LOVE candy corn. I actually bought a bag the other day while I was out with my friend Kim. As I was carrying it around she was yelling at me the entire time about how disgusting candy corn is! It’s funny how people have such strong feelings about candy corn. It seems to be you either love it or hate it. No in between. Perhaps I will eat some right now . . . nom.

  5. Laura says:

    Happy Halloween!

We got lost on the wook due to a dense fog two years ago! It was scary, but funny (not too lost, fortunately). My dog found the way.

Today is good day to get lost in the woods, we have a foggy Halloween day. Good!

  6. Ellen says:

I love carving pumpkins – I wish I had time to do it this year!

  7. Hazel says:

The scareist movie I ever saw was “The Exorcist”, I was a teenager when it first came out. If no one had ever told me it was loosely based on a true story of a young boy, I would have just viewed it as another typical Hollywood scary movie. It was the first time the concept of true evil became real to me. I haven’t been able to watch scarry movies the same again. Now as for candy corn and pumpkins I love them, I love carving pumpkins with the kids, decorating the house, making popcorn balls and hot apple cider! I love the changing Autumn colors, wearing sweaters and mittens..

    • Sandy P says:

Hazel, I am so with you on The Exorcist!! We must be kindred spirits as I love candy corn and carving pumpkins too. Here in Michigan it really is a dark and stormy night tonight!

I absolutely hate candy corn with a burning passion. Also, the scariest movie I’ve ever seen is Child’s Play 2. I first watched Child’s Play when I was 3, and I’ve been terrified of Chucky ever since (I’m 29 now) So tonight, I’m gonna do some cute spiderweb makeup, get pizza, candy and mountain dew and watch Child’s Play 2!

  17. Bridget says:

    1. I have tiles of candy corn as my current work desktop. I think this well speaks to my official position on candy corn.
    2. I’m planning on getting my carving’ on tonight, actually! I used to carve a pumpkin every fall, now it seems to have waned to every other year or so, but I always go the traditional route: triangles for eyes and nose, and a toothy grin.
    3. Haunted Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia
    4. No, but I’ve always wanted to meet Lincoln’s ghost.
    5. The Ring. Hands down. Also, I have a completely irrational fear of any figure with a robe that hides its face, so, yes, the Scream movies scared me.
    Scariest movie you’ve ever seen?

  29. Sarah says:

My favorite haunted house – I volunteered at a low income housing community center last year. We made a complete haunted house maze for all the kids. I was a witch at that very end that jumped around the door and cackled at the kids. It was so much fun to be behind the scenes! But I did ruin my pedicure completely by the children stepping on my witch boots.

We paint pumpkins instead of carving them, which is pretty fun!

  81. Rachel says:

I only have carved pumpkins one time – I didn’t realize how acidic pumpkins were! I did two Nightmare Before Christmas themed pumpkins (one Oogie Boogie, one Jack) and by the time I had finished, my hands were burning and cracking from all the enzymes in the pumpkin flesh! I had fun with the carving, but my hands were in terrible shape for a couple weeks afterwards. I bought pumpkins a few more times with plans to carve, but then I remembered all the irritation and burning and ended up leaving them on the front step. Of course, I forgot to pitch them after Halloween and they ended up rotting on the step too. My husband has now banned me from buying pumpkins!! >.<

I refused his (joking) question of being a Playboy bunny, but figured a great feminist icon would balance us out at parties. Hope you have a fun Holiday!

  134. em says:

i’ve never liked candy corn. only one person in my family likes eating candy corn

  136. Michaela says:

Happy Halloween Karen! The scariest movie I’ve ever seen is The Changeling with George C.Scott. It’s about this guy who bought an old house and weird things have been happening in the attic! There’s a certain element of suspense. It’s that type of movie that even when you know something terrible is going to happen you still get scared because it’s so sudden! It’s that good of a movie.

  143. Cathy says:

I love candy corn but can only eat a small amount because it’s so sweet. And I haven’t carved a pumpkin since I was a kid. We went to a Halloween party tonight and we watched the Shining and then the Exorcist. I actually work for the hospital system that did the exorcist on the boy who the movie is based on. A stained glass window that was in the room is in our archives. Not kidding.

  144. Brittany says:

I do remember carving a pumpkin with my parents when I was in elementary school. Up until recently, I haven’t been in a Halloween celebration mood. Hi Karen, baby girl, and Tabs.
Hope all is well. No I’ve never been lost in the woods, that I can remember – and I’ve carved pumpkins I think once. I didn’t care much for it. Life is a little, well actually a lot better for me – I have some new friends! Thank you Ms. Karen for your well-wishes for me. My job is going grand, and things are well. 170. Lauren says:

I was lost in the woods 2 months ago! I was having a yucky day before I moved, and decided to hike w my dog at the same trail we always go to. I wanted to be adventurous and took a different route. The sun was setting and 2 hours later, I was SO. LOST. my dog couldn’t walk anymore and I sat in the mud next to him. I had my cell phone and called the police! They asked where I was, and I said “I don’t know, that’s why I’m calling!” I knew the name of the woods/trail and 20 min later a ranger on a bike found us! My dog slept the entire next day, and I was covered w bug bites and scratches.

    Happy belated Halloween.

How do you feel about candy corn?

It’s a good thing they have other flavors because the original is horrid.

Have you ever carved a pumpkin before?

    Yes when I was younger.

    Best haunted house?

I have to admit I’ve only been to one, but I was actually the one scaring people. We weren’t very scary imo. lol

Have you ever seen a ghost?

More like an apparition. I think it was my moms mother; we’ve never met before because she died when my mom was 12.

    Scariest movie you’ve ever seen?

It’s more gore than scare, but I’d have to say Human Centipede.

Have you ever been lost in the woods?

Nope. I’ve seen what happens in the movies so I know better to even go close to the woods. I’ll remain in city limits.

Have you ever carved a pumpkin?

Every year I use to carve pumpkins with my family. My mom would make us use the kit since she thought it was safer than knives. I grew up thinking everyone carved pumpkins as a kid until this year. My boyfriend and I carved pumpkins together this year. I carved an elaborate cat in the moonlight, and he carved a simple jack o latern. He said he wanted to do something easy because it was his first time carving one. I was shocked considering he is 28 years old. I guess his parents were afraid to let him carve one as a kid because they didn’t want him to hurt himself. Anyways, I just thought it was funny.

  190. Kimm says:

Happy belated Halloween! Did you have fun? I just love Halloween! I got to dress up twice this year and I just love doing makeup! My next door neighbors niece let me paint her face like a sugar skull and it was so much fun!!!! I was a deer this year. And I made antlers out of sticks. And then my husband kindly reminded me that only boy deers have antlers. And then called me Caitlyn Jenner all night. Oh well.

    Hi Karen! Happy Halloween!

I’m not from the States so Halloween is a new (but exciting!) experience for me. I didn’t have time to carve a pumpkin this year (I really, really want to!). I’m not a huge fan of horror movies, especially after an ex would force me to watch them. I’d literally be cowering in the theater, covering my eyes; I’m not a fan of gore.

I loved your Rainbow Dash costume! My Little Pony is a guilty pleasure of mine.

I think I may be one of the only people on the planet who legitimately enjoys candy corn…

  200. Stacy says:

I saw a weird shaped pumpkin at the store and didn’t buy it. It was larger at the top and smaller at the bottom, looked like it was squeezed while growing. I had a great idea for it later that night but i figured it was alteady gonw. A couple days later that pumpkin was still there and I went ahead and bought it.I carved an alien face in it and painted it with green neon paint so it would glow with a black light. It is the coolest pumpkin I’ve ever done.

I like candy corn, but it’s so sugary sweet I can only eat a few pieces!

  221. Sarah W says:

I also eat each section of candy corn separately…

  222. Isabel V says:

I’m aware this isn’t the most popular opinion, but I’m on team candy corn! I’m always surprised by just how much people hate it, but I dig the texture in spite of the fact that they’re really just tricolored, triangular sugar bombs. They make little pumpkins out of the same goop that are pretty adorable!

Can’t say that I’ve ever seen a ghost before (yikes!) and hopefully, I never do. :/

In terms of the scariest movie, I don’t watch too many horror films but probably a 3-way tie between The Exorcist, Nosferatu, and the original 1968 Night of the Living Dead (hell, any of the zombie movies give me a good scare).

  263. Maura Ehrlich says:

When I was about 14 years old, me and my 3 friends were home alone watching Christmas movies when all of a sudden all 4 of my family’s stockings fell from the mantle where they were wrapped around and secured to a candle, which means there is no way they could’ve just fallen because of wind…And that is the time I felt the presence of a ghost!

  264. Carm says:

Candy corn is only slightly better than no candy at all. I love carving pumpkins. Fortunately, my kids normally lose interest and I can finish them up (and enhance them).
Too chicken to watch scary movies but I always read the annual ghost story contest on Jezebel. I should stop doing that…probably. But I won’t because its fascinating.

Kids enjoyed carving pumpkins and trick and treating a lot this year. Our 2 year old is such an extrovert, he was all polite and chatty. 4 year old is more shy. Of course, it is easy when you know big brother is backup :).

I’m nervous about taking our cats to boarding, even if it is at our awesome vet. we’re gone a week over thanksgiving, and usual cat sitter is not available.

Even though I had to work until 8pm on Halloween night, I still went out with some friends to dance the night away at one of my friends’ party after coming from work.
