Better for Beauty: Facebook or Twitter?

Best for Beauty: Facebook or Twitter?

Tweet much? Do you Facebook?

I feel like I’m the last person in America who isn’t on Twitter. I am on Facebook, though, but I haven’t used it much.

I want to. I’ve been thinking about getting more into Facebook or Twitter but should probably pick just one so I don’t bite off more than I can chew with two services and the blog at the same time.

Which do you like more, Facebook or Twitter? Which is a better resource for makeup and beauty? — that’s what I’d really like to know.

Which is better for makeup and beauty, Facebook or Twitter?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

P.S. Sorry, homies, about being so quiet today in the comments, but I’ve been sick as a dog since last night with food poisoning. It must have been the leftover steamed pork buns I ate for dinner Monday night…

Now there’s a phrase with red flags painted all over it, LOL!: “It must have been the leftover steamed pork buns I ate for dinner Monday night…”

I voted Twitter because I’m on Twitter and not on Facebook (Must be the last person in the world) but I don’t think either is a “resource” for makeup and beauty. We have to make our own resources πŸ˜‰ I hope you are feeling better Karen – take lots of water and rehydration salts if you’ve been purging.

I hope you get well soon, Karen!! I’ve had food poisoning before and you really just have to hang in there! Don’t forget to replenish anything your body expels, especially if you’re purging. Gatorade is always a safe bet as well.

    Again, get well soon!

  3. Alexzandra says:

I hope you feel better soon! Food poisoning is the worst.

I think twitter is probably a better beauty resource (I know Zoya tweets their sales, etc), but I only have a Facebook account.

Aww! Hope you feel better soon~ D=

  5. Karen4 says:

I think Facebook is preferable to Twitter. However, I found quite an interesting article on comparing the two:

  6. LauraJ says:

So sorry your sick. Hopefully it is just food poisoning (sounds weird, but that usually doesn’t last too long).

I like twitter better because some companies do their sales that way. I got the last 2 Zoya collections yesterday free with purchase of their color lock system because I follow them on twitter. The blogs are really a better “resource,” though.

    • Karen says:

      Hi LauraJ,

Thankfully it was just food poisoning. I’m feeling much better today. πŸ™‚

Anyway, the aspect of getting sales news is exciting. But do you follow any other people on twitter?

  7. Kelley says:

I am so excited to learn you are on fb!!! You better accept my friend request! I only do facebook – I think twitter seems a bit overwhelming. Lots of my friends do both as you can update your facebook status from twitter – I think!

  8. Ms. B says:

    Hi Karen,

New reader here and I loves your blog =)

I prefer facebook, only because twitter kind of irritates me. Although recently I have been thinking about signing up just to follow companies and celebrities etc.

    Hope you feel better Karen!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Ms. B,

      Thanks for letting me know.

I’m feeling much better today — I woke up feeling like a whole new woman. Have a good Wednesday!

  9. Jasmine says:

    Hi Karen,

I love the way you’re updating and writing right now! Sure, you can Twitter or Facebook, but please don’t Twitter posts πŸ™ they are always so insubstantial and leave me high and dry! LOL. I love reading your posts, you’ve obviously thought through what you were going to write about. Twitters can get so irritating with all the one-liners!

  10. Megan says:

I am actually on both Twitter and Facebook. I voted for Twitter. The thing is that I think more people are on Facebook than Twitter, but I think that Twitter is like a million times better for bloggers. Facebook is like look up a million people you know from way back when and see what they’re up to from time to time kinda thing to me. Twitter is like real time updates and messages…it’s not like all about who you are and your life accomplishments with pictures of the fam you know? Plus the twitter mobile updates to the phone are awesome. To be honest though…you should probably have both.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Megan,

Gah, I’m afraid I’ll eventually have to do both… it seems like everyone is on twitter. I always assumed it would be just a bunch of random updates like, “I’m eating asparagus for dinner,” but I guess it’s good for networking.

  11. Nicole15 says:

I don’t facebook or twitter. There is just no time for it in my hectic life. The little bit of time I have each day to do some personal web surfing is spent visiting beauty blogs. For me, that has been where I feel best served getting my beauty info & fix.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Nicole,

That’s one reason I’ve held back from twitter. I feel like there’s just so much I have to do already that to add something else on would be overload. I dunno, seems like eventually I’ll have to get on the train. *sigh*

  12. CecilyT says:

You can actually link your tweet updates to facebook, so I basically joined FB, and then jumped over to Twitter. I use the twitterfox extention on Firefox and love it.

CecilyT´s last blog post..The Book of New Family Traditions

  13. Megan says:

No on twitter you can link to new blog posts, post pictures on twitpic, tell everyone about the cool new whatever from your cell phone while out shopping…so yeah you can totally share every little detail and action…but you can also use it for live action makeup news πŸ™‚

  14. Kim says:

Don’t worry — I’m on the bandwagon of the no-Twitter life. I’ve had facebook for years but it’s gotten kind of ridic over the years. Twitter, to me, is super annoying. But facebook is a lot harder to navigate sometimes. Its all up to you. I’m the spokesperson for anti-Tweeting. lol.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Kim,

Thanks for weighing in. I still have yet to understand the fascination — I dunno, it seems like it’s like the technology of the moment, you know? Remember when MySpace was supposed to revolutionize the internet world? Now nobody ever talks about it.

  15. Nicole! says:

I think Twitter would be an awesome thing for you. A lot of the other makeup bloggers have twitter and it makes it easy to keep up with them (especially at work when you probably can’t be viewing all these makeup blogs). It’s also good to tell people about deals you find or interesting pics you see on all your adventures!

Plus, I think you’ve got the personality for twitter (if that makes sense) you seem to do a lot of cool things throughout your day and your readers would probably be interested in knowing that stuff… if you want to tell them! I would TOTALLY follow you! =D

    yay facebook is winning!
ps. i just added you! πŸ˜‰

  17. Meream says:

Hope you’re all better now, Karen. Twitter is good for posting blog updates. Facebook can suck you in with the applications and stuff. If you focus on twitter, you can still do serious work here on your lovely blog. πŸ˜€

  18. Stephie says:

Hope you feel better soon Karen. I had the same feeling on Monday.. NOT COOL. When you can eat again, try some fruit. They are easy on the tummy and feel kinda refreshing to eat.

Hmm. I think that if anything facebook could work as a resource just because of the plethora of applications you can add onto your page. But a lot of youtube gurus use twitter to talk to subscribers about beauty or other things happening in the moment. But since you don’t like instant messaging I don’t know if you’d enjoy it very much…

    • Karen says:

      Hi Stephie,

Thank you. So far the only things I’ve been able to keep down are Eggo waffles (go figure) and maple syrup. Fruit sounds good — I’ll try it for lunch.

      How’s your Wednesday going?

  19. Shefali says:

Hey Karen! UGH, I hope you feel better. That really sucks!

I would love it if you were on Facebook!! I think it’s a great resource. I’m a “fan” of Sephora on Facebook and also of Stila. I get product updates there and also notifications for deals. It’s great! IMO, I also think it’s better than Twitter only because I can see all the pictures and get a “full” picture of what’s new.

  20. Sarah says:

I love facebook. It’s the only social networking site I use πŸ™‚

  21. I use both Facebook and Twitter and they really are like totally different mediums. Twitter is SO great for picking up things that you never would have known. I learn all kinds of neat tips and information and you get breaking news FAST.

Facebook can be useful for those things as well, but it’s not as up to the minute. It’s also not as user friendly with mobile phones as Twitter is. I have a Facebook account for friends/family and then a separate one for my blog, but really, it just updates posts from my site, I don’t use it much otherwise.

  22. Kimie says:

No Offence to the Twitter lovers out there, but do people really care when you are at Starbucks or the bank? Seriously. I’ve gotten “tweets” about people going to the dentist and that they just bought a cool highlighter at office depot. Umm yeah, unless you are majorly exciting I would skip the twitter heheheheh. With facebook mobile it’s basically the same thing anyways.

  23. Row says:

    Hi Karen!

They are both evil! Trust me. One day you don’t care, you’re all nonchalant, the next you are fiercely counting followers or friends.

I did Facebook twice then left for good (although its a battle closing the account down and making them remove all my personal data). I am still on Twitter now but it gets time consuming, so I try and keep it for tweeting about my new blog posts. Otherwise you find yourself saying things like….’I had diahorrea today’

    • Karen says:

      Hi Rowena,

Yah… I’m afraid I’d end up twittering about inane things like, “My cat just burped,” or “Wow, blue cheese smells really funky.” How much time do you spend twittering a day? Does it go beyond an hour?

  24. I am logged in all day at work and just check it whenever I have time or feel like it. I don’t feel the urge to check it constantly and don’t even log in after 4:00 pm or on weekends.

I think a lot of people who don’t use Twitter don’t really get that the vast majority of people (at least that I follow) do not constantly post things like “My sandwich was dry”, etc. They usually post useful information or cool pics of new things coming out, etc. I don’t follow people who post useless babble. But if you don’t like IM, then you probably won’t like Twitter!

  25. Oh and I meant to add it’s a GREAT networking tool! I have met lots of other bloggers and PR people and we have some great useful conversations, so I love that aspect of it as well.

    • Karen says:

      Hi Vampy Varnish,

Yah, it looks like I’m probably going to have to do it just for the networking. I am afraid it’s gonna take over my life, though! I get easily distracted enough as it is… I swear the internet has given me ADD.

  26. Amy says:

  27. Stef says:

Karen, I think Twitter would be great for you.

We heart this has both a twitter and facebook and we never use our facebook acct. We auto feed posts into it and it’s just kind of there.

Twitter on the other hand has been really resourceful for making connection (both with other bloggers, new readers and cosmetic companies) and is really kind of fun. I resisted it for ages. But now that we have it up and running I’m so glad we took the plunge.

Stef´s last blog post..Plan an awesome kid’s birthday party!

  28. Tiera says:

Hi Karen πŸ™‚ I think Twitter is a better resource for makeup and beauty, and bloggers in general. I’m working on a new blog project at the moment, but with my previous blog Twitter worked great for finding out new information, interacting with readers and other bloggers, and exchanging information with beauty companies. I tried to do both for a while, but it was too much (and a little repetitive). I keep FB for more personal use, rather than blog networking and promotion.

    Hope you feel better!

  29. Daya says:

FB is what I’m on…I figured one social site was enough! πŸ™‚

  30. Megan says:

Personally I don’t have enough time for it to take over my life. There are a small number of folks who I get the mobile updates sent to my phone, but it’s not many. I personally just don’t have the time for it. You can pick and choose if you want the mobile updates to your phone.

  31. Shivotra says:

I deactivated FB because its too much of a distraction and this year I need to study my butt off. I do use twitter though…for businesses, I’d say twitter works better.

  32. Leeng says:

I voted Twitter simply because it’s easier and faster to get updates.

  33. penelope says:

  34. Solé says:

Facebook and Twitter are two different animals. I’ve been on MySpace since 2005, Twitter since 2007, and Facebook for less than a year. I don’t do much on MS anymore since there was a mass exodus about six months ago, but I check in daily to read my friends’ bulletins if there are any. It took me a while to get into Facebook since I was so used to MS and they are very different, but all my family (and I do mean ALL! Even my mom!) are on FB so I started using it more. I’ve gotten really used to FB now and I actually like it better than MS because it’s more social. What I don’t like about FB is that you can’t use HTML to decorate your page. As far as Twitter, I sent the occasional update when I have something random to say, and no one to say it to. My Twitter is full of random cryptic little messages, but I like it that way. Collectively, these thoughts are quite amusing. I could never do real-time frequent Twitter updates. I would find it incredibly time-consuming and mundane.

  35. DJ says:

What Vampy Varnish said, all three times. The two aren’t really comparable in my mind; Facebook is community oriented while Twitter is about quick dispersion of information.

Facebook has become too bogged down with apps and inane updates; the beauty of Twitter is you only have to follow who you want to. Check out this list,

As for time consumption, I guess it depends on your surfing style. I’m notorious for opening a million new tabs from Google Reader (all of yours, you’ll be pleased to note!) and now Twitter, so it gives me a heck of a lot of reading material. On the other hand, I’m really learning quite a bit about many topics.

    Hiya Karen,

Hope u feel better soon. Remember that you can link Facebook and Twitter. The updates from Twitter can be sent to your Facebook status message, so no need to update both.

Your nephew is turning 1-year old soon.

Oh I feel for you! Anything related to the stomach is the worst kind of illness! Make sure to go to the doctor if you get too dehydrated. IV really makes you feel better…been there! Get well soon!

BTW I’m on Facebook! I’ll have to look you up. I don’t write much on it either, but that will change as my profession changes from scientist to businesswoman, I’m sure.

  39. Rowena says:

    Hey Karen!

I have to say, no much time. I set myself limits otherwise it becomes obsessive. At the moment all of my posts will be tweeted and very occasionally I may tweet something if its interesting. Otherwise it does get a little bit erm…silly?!

It would be fun hearing about your cats though! πŸ˜‰ You could say your cats just burped and I could tell you about my cats farting? *downward spiral Rowena, downward spiral*

  40. Krys says:

Facebook due to the applications and groups etc. Although I find a lot of people marketing across many different sites. I like the use of youtube now. Great way to see the products and swatches etc. I personally can’t stand twitter! I refuse to use it.
